Book Description
Isabelle Airly is having trouble staying afloat. Her father, a gentle physician, has taken his own life, and Isabelle is sorting out the facts about his arrest for insurance fraud, his descent into madness-and how much he really knew about what was going on all those years between his wife and his brother. At the same time, she is mourning a loss of her own, and exploring her memories of a childhood that might not have been as idyllic as it seemed. If Isabelle can chart her father's course, maybe she can chart her own. And maybe she'll eventually land safely on solid ground.
Download Description
In her schoolgirl days, Isabelle Airly mastered the high jump, sailing over the bar, weightless, above it all. She moved like the wind that drove the ships of old, an elusive, invisible force carefully charted by mariners. Now, in her thirties, she's having more trouble staying afloat. And if she cannot stop the force of the wind-or be that force herself-maybe she can at least hitch a ride on it until she lands safely on solid ground.

A truly moving piece........2005-02-26
This was a truly poetic piece, I felt like I was reading a piece of poetic prose. This book could easily be in a philosophy section as well as fiction, however, he discovers the inner core of human relationships with this novel. I was surprised because the writing was so different from his other book "Candy." I wasn't quite sure what to expect. What draws you into this book is the humanness he interweaves into it. You don't feel sorry for Isabelle, but there are parts of her that reside in every one of us. He makes her real and she grieves in real ways like the rest of us, he shows us that even characters in a book are not above the human reality and we all have to grieve in our own way and our own time. He brings us through her childhood into adulthood and we go on the ride with her through losses of her father mentally and physically and discoveries she makes along the way about life.
And now the world shrinks to a point...........2004-12-22
After coming across Luke Davies first novel, Candy, I couldn't wait for the appearance of his next book. While Isabelle The Navigator lacks the powerfully compulsive magnetism of Candy, it is still nonetheless a work of art, displaying Davies's wonderfully poetic prose as he dives into the depths of grief.
Isabelle had a wonderful childhood, brought abruptly to an end when her physician father Tom is arrested and sent to prison for Medicare fraud. She also discovers that her mother had been having an on and off affair with her uncle Dan, Tom's brother. Then her love of four years, Matt, is suddenly killed in a highway accident, which leaves Isabelle feeling as though she were an empty vessel.
Davies probes the depths of Isabelle's grief with such rhythmical and flowing prose that her pain is intimately felt by the reader, capturing the intense and profound emotions like very few writers can do. He begins by wading in the shallows of the initial loss of her father's love, as Tom drifts further and further into insanity after his release from prison, eventually plunging headlong into the icy and numbing depths of acute grief after Matt's death.
With scenes that smoothly move back and forth in time, Isabelle tells us the story of her losses and her determination to bring meaning back into her life while coming to grips with her past. From Davies homeland of Australia to the elegant charm of Paris to a brief visit to Hawaii, Isabelle finds that though her ghosts will always follow her, there is life after even the harshest of events strip away your intended future.
Perfect read, wonderful and beautiful and uplifting even in its heartbreaking reality, Davies has written another winner with Isabelle The Navigator. Don't forget to pick up a copy of Candy also. Enjoy!
A good read.............2004-01-02
Well let me start by saying, it's not Candy. It's a great story, and a good read, but it's not nearly as good as Candy. An emotional story with great character devolopment and nice to read. It's a sad romance, and a beautiful story. Would certainly reccomend.

A beautiful and well written story.......2002-02-18
A beautiful, well written and structured story by Peter Telep.
It truly celebrates the ultimate victory of human spirit, feelings , enterprise and innovation in face of all threats and challenges. These qualities in mankind are going to ensure its survival in future.
I recommend that all science fiction lovers and enthusiasts read this book and also add a copy to their personal library.
Good, realistic sci-fi........2001-03-29
Red Planet is a book that captured my feelings about the characters and the conflicts between them. The technical part of the story is very believable and holds the readers interest throughout the book. Peter Telep paints a vivid picture in this story. Cal
Pretty good..........2001-02-06
Never have I seen the movie, nor do I want to, but Telep's good at adapting movies for books (Wing Commander was a great novelization). I enjoyed it, and hope Pilgrim Truth gets published one of these days.
The Interesting Red Planet.......2001-01-28
This is a very good book, up to par with Peter Telep's standard. It has a varied and intense character development, one of the prime requisites to be a good read for me. It also has a deep and branched plot, another must for keeping me hooked on it.
Too bad I still didn't see the movie, so I can't compare both just yet.
This is one of those ones that I'd keep in my collection permanently. :)
An okay movie, but a great book.......2001-01-28
In the book the Earth is dying and Mars is our only hope. They're trying to give mars a breatheable atmosphere, and it's not working. Want to find out why? Read the book!
Peter Telep is a great sci-fi writer and proves it once again with Red Planet. The movie had bad actors, plot holes, and sorry jokes; the book on the other hand is full of rich, vivid detail, like only Telep can supply. If you like space or sci-fi this book is for you.

This is How it's Done.......2004-05-03
I liked Blood Red Sky. A lot. Firstly, it takes a universe I became enamoured with as a toddler and brings it back to life. Tortosa, Sharrieff, and company have done an outstanding job pulling the Battle of the Planets in a more mature and realistic direction, replacing the one dimensional caricatures of the animated series with highly trained but flawed individuals, each with their own deeper pasts and agendas. The artwork is definitely above average, combining with excellent coloring and layout to give the story an epic, movie-like feel. The characters are all rendered perfectly. Having said that, the action is sometimes hard to follow, jumping around on multi-panelled pages, and fast forwarding unexpectedly. As a comic book/graphic novel, the books feel is such that it never takes itself too seriously, while presenting a complex and intense plot to immerse the reader. This is an excellent journey to take for all Battle of the Planets fans, while giving new readers an engaging work that shows just how good the concept of Battle of the Planets can be, and how it should have been done in the first place.
A.......2004-05-03
I liked this publication very much, not just because of its high production values, but because it continues and fleshes out a universe that captured my imagination in my toddler days. Tortosa, Sharrieff, and company bring to Battle of the Planets a maturity and realism that was totally lacking in the original animated series. Not only do they eliminate the annoying and incongrous 7-Zark-7, they imbue the main characters with skills and personality that raise them from the status of one dimensional caricatures, to highly trained but flawed people, each with his/her own deeper past. All the favorite and integral characters are here and fully realised-the G-Force team themselves, Zoltar , Chief Anderson, and Colonel Cronus. The art is definitely above average, capturing the look of the characters perfectly, while combining with excellent coloring and layout to give the story an epic, movie-like feel. Having said that, the action is sometimes hard to follow, as it jumps around on multi-panelled pages, and fast forwards unexpectdedly at times. As a comic or graphic novel, the book's feel is perfect, never taking itself too seriously, while having fun with a complex and intense plotline. This is an excellent journey to take for all the Battle of the Planets fans out there, but at the same time provides potential new readers with a glimpse at how good the concept of Battle of the Planets can be, and how it should have been done in the first place.

"Wing It".......2006-03-15
Lots of good recipes for those who like Chicken Wings. Sauces can be used to spice up other foods as well.
GIVE THESE DIFFERENT RECEIPES A TRY.......2005-02-01
My tried and true method for making Buffalo Wings has been a sure fire hit for a number of years. My combination method of first baking then quickly frying to get a crispness before tossing in Frank's Hot Sauce along with a few added ingredients has allowed me to very nearly duplicate the taste of the Wings from the legendary Anchor bar...or so friends have told me so.
Still...there are many ways of doing tasty wings, especially when entertaining guests who want a little less fire. When we entertain I usually make three types of wings: My standard, and a couple of mild to medium hot varieties that favor more spice over hear. "Wing it" has been added to my collection and provides several outstanding wing recipes that our flavorful without making your eyes water. The Sesame Wings are a particular favorite of a friend of mine who insists I make them every time he comes over.
Oddly Enough I'm not crazy about Mr. O'hara's recipe for his Classic Buffalo Wings for the simple reason I don't like my buffalo wings to be battered because if they sit for two long the batter soaks up the sauce rendering the wings with a spongy texture.
Solid book with the rest of the recipes though.
Book Description
Biologists, breeders and trainers, and champion sled dog racers, Raymond and Lorna Coppinger have more than four decades of experience with literally thousands of dogs. Offering a scientifically informed perspective on canines and their relations with humans, the Coppingers take a close look at eight different types of dogs—household, village, livestock guarding, herding, sled-pulling, pointing, retrieving, and hound. They argue that dogs did not evolve directly from wolves, nor were they trained by early humans; instead they domesticated themselves to exploit a new ecological niche: Mesolithic village dumps. Tracing the evolution of today's breeds from these village dogs, the Coppingers show how characteristic shapes and behaviors—from pointing and baying to the sleek shapes of running dogs—arise from both genetic heritage and the environments in which pups are raised.
For both dogs and humans to get the most out of each other, we need to understand and adapt to the biological needs and dispositions of our canine companions, just as they have to ours.

Bad Science.......2007-09-15
I found this book loaded with inaccuracies, leaps to conclusions not scientifically supported, poor understanding of the science of evolution, unfair comparisons of natural selection with artificial selection, misinterpretaion, incorrect definition of the science of psychology, lack of positive peer review as evidenced by the source of recommendations on the back cover and generally frustrated reading for even a Master degree dog behaviorist. I'm sorry, but I found it difficult to believe these folks are biologists. It is clear they are not behaviorists although they freely infer that their opinions and statements are related to science based facts.
I am upset that I spent my hard earned money on this book.
I liked the "stories" and personal experience. The authors go against not only the current trends in well-researched theory but against the better judgment of thoughtful dog lovers. It's a wonder to me that people can make a small fortune printing this stuff.
Best dog book for biologically-minded.......2007-06-13
After getting my first dog, I went through at least a dozen dog books in a short time, and this was the best of all of them. The author presents well-thought through arguments to present theories in dog evolution, and doesn't rely on common assumptions of dog behavior. If you are tired of dog books that lack a strong biological foundation, this is the book for you.
Logical, easy to understand insights into behavior and evolution.......2007-02-03
Heard Dr. Coppinger speak at the APDT conference and was fascinated by his theories, and the fact that he's able to change his opinions as insights, training and knowledge evolves. Not someone that's afraid to say he was wrong or has changed his opinion. Some VERY interesting arguments and absolute bolts of insight that should be obvious, but sometimes isn't, things like why infant, puppy, adolescent and adult dogs have different behaviors and why those behaviors aren't carried from one stage of life to the next, heat exchange principles in working dogs (primarily sled dogs, but applies to all dogs), cognitive vs. inherent behaviors, and the argument as to why we wouldn't be thinking of dogs with regard to their "wolf" ancestry, but that they've evolved so far past that the analogy is no longer applicable. A little "wonky" and research"y" in tone, but totally worth the effort for the insights! Scholar meets technician, clearly someone with real world dog experience.
Dissatisfied.......2007-01-11
Although this is a superb book written by a knowledgeable author I would not know how to rate it as I HAVE NOT RECEIVED IT!
Fido--the wolf at my feet?.......2006-07-29
An excellent review of current literature on the canine. This book can stimulate reflection on the behavior of domestic dogs, and provide clarity on some of the more puzzling aspects of pet dog activities.
Amazon.com
There are dog lovers, and then there are dog lovers. Behavioral scientists Raymond Coppinger and Lorna Coppinger have raised hundreds of dogs of various breeds, raced sled teams, and published professional and popular works on canine behavior. Dogs is their manifesto of canine evolution and treatment by humans, and it offers deep insight, provocative theories, and controversial ideas regarding our relationship with them. Though some of the material is most appropriate for readers with some zoological background, much of it is written for a general audience--one that cares about dogs not just for what they offer humans, but for their own sake.
Arguing that much of current thinking about dogs' evolutionary history is misguided, the authors share their own complex story of wolflike animals coevolving with permanent human settlements and only recently being subject to directed breeding and artificial selection. This is interesting enough, but they go on to take issue with the use and treatment of dogs, some of which they claim is bad for dog and human alike. Pure breeding, making companion animals of inappropriate breeds, and even some uses of disability assistance are assailed for neglecting genetic and other hardwired aspects of canine life. Surprisingly little is known for sure about dogs' lives and behavior, so the Coppingers' contribution is a welcome, if occasionally unsettling, eye-opener. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Marking the first time that dogs have been explained in such detail by eminent researchers, Dogs is a work of wide appeal, as absorbing as it is enlightening.
Drawing on insight gleaned from forty-five years of raising, training, and studying the behaviors of dogs worldwide, Lorna and Raymond Coppinger explore the fascinating processes by which dog breeds have evolved into their unique shapes and behaviors. Concentrating on five types of dogs -- modern household dogs, village dogs, livestock-guarding dogs, sled dogs, and herding dogs -- the Coppingers, internationally recognized canine ethologists and consummate dog lovers, examine our canine companions from a unique biological viewpoint. Dogs clearly points the way for dog lovers, dog therapists, veterinarians, and all others who deal with dogs to understand their animals from a fresh perspective.
How did the domestic dog become a distinct species from the wolf? Why do different breeds behave differently? Most important, how can we improve the relationship between humans and dogs?
The authors show how dogs' different abilities depend upon the confluence of their nature and nurture -- that both genetics and the environment play equally key roles. They also reveal that many people inadvertently harm their canine companions because they fail to understand dogs' biological needs and dispositions.
Dogs is a highly readable biological approach by noted researchers that provides a wealth of new information about the interaction of nature and nurture, and demonstrates how unique dog behavior is in the animal world.

Applied Coppingerology K9 style.......2007-07-20
My husband, a biology faculty member, brought home a review in the journal, _Science_, of the Coppingers' new revolutionary work, and after I read the review, I was intrigued, so Darling Doc brought the book home from University library. I ate it with laughter, outloud head nodding, and pondering brain wrinkles. I am a K9 trainer of 15 years, have competed nationally, currently have two K9 partners working with me and train others to train their K9s. We also do a sport called Schutzhund, designed as a breed qualifcation test for German Shepherd Dogs. GSDs are very wolflike in appearance, so dispelling the notion that they ARE domesticated wolves was not a topic I wanted to take on with my trainees....until Drs Coppinger. Now I understand my own gut reaction to the earlier theories of evolution wolf to dog. My husband teaches the Coppinger theory, as well, in his intro evolutionary biology course (freshpersons always love dogs and this is a great start, discussion wise and learning wise).
I have been using Drs Coppingers' ideas, information, and wisdom for about 2-3 years now with huge success given the way I train...use of presented genetic/biological characteristics, shape behavior to desired form, and voila! trained dog with little stress.
I cannot recommend this series of books highly enough. I have personally seen the results of application on 3 of my own competition dogs and many others. This book is for the layperson whose dog has the most important job of all, companionship and partnership, to the serious dog trainer and trainer of dog handlers.
Janica Tansey
"Dogs" is a fascinating journey into the soul of "dogginess".......2007-02-17
I had never heard a word about this book before I bought it, but I decided to buy precisely for the inflamed criticism I read from someone who was "horrified" at some of the things he had read in the book, things like "oh,this book is evil, they say horrible things about service dogs(dogs for the blind or deaf)or even pet dogs!!"I think I also read some criticism of someone from the AKC or similar...
I thought Ray & Lorna Coppinger MUST have treaded on some sensitive "paws"+ touched some controversial issues to recieve this kind of criticism...SO I decided to write this review because this book is a JEWEL of dog books. The minute I started reading it,I was fascinated + swept!!Its an amazing and UNIQUE book, full of information it would've been hard to find had not the book been written by biologists. That's probably what sets it aside from other dog books.TRUE:you have to keep in mind its is NOT the book that will tell you how to get your dog to stop chewing on the furniture or how to stop pulling on the leash. But I have already read it twice, and I find it one of the most fascinating books I have ever read in my whole life.I think their hypothesis on dog origin-dogs domesticating themselves by becoming scavengers is highly plausible, just watch dogs in different cities + terraces where people are eating!-and I agree 100% in most(almost all!)of issues the authors claim when they talk about service dogs, show dogs and pet dogs. They are professionals that have decades of experience teamed with scientific data, and real love for dogs.Ray Coppinger has trained + ran with sled dogs for 30 years, and he explains the biological conformation of sled dogs, and why wolves DO NOT make good sled runners(for example)and then he followed shepherd dogs in Europe while they where migrating with flocks of sheep. He explains the difference on how you train one puppy to watch the sheep + another one to herd the sheep, and how the different puppies get used to the different jobs, and how unique that is,considering the dog is a predator and the sheep are its prey,so what a paradox it is to have a predator protecting its prey!!Just read carefully and enjoy every word!I certainly did, and still do.
Fascinating look at dogs.......2006-12-06
Dogs seem so familiar and common that even without owning one, you think you know them. However, this book, written by a biologist specializing in animal behavior, shows us how little we understand dogs. Coppinger points out why the "descended from wolves" story doesn't explain dog behavior and why asserting alpha dominance doesn't mean the same things to dogs as it does to wolves. If you are interested in a scientific understanding of why dogs do what they do, this book will be truly eye-opening. The "critical period" of puppies and the predator behavioral sequences that explain herding vs. guarding dogs were most fascinating. Coppinger should have his own special on PBS.
GREAT BOOK!.......2006-05-31
This book completely convinced me about the way dogs evolved. I really like it! I learned a lot from it. I liked the writers' style as well. Especially I liked the theory for village dog. If you come to Bulgaria, from where I am you'll see the same things authors describe for Mexico and Africa! Thank you, it was such an experience to read this book!
although the dog genome has been sequenced.......2006-03-19
Although the dog genome has been sequenced, this book informs us much abou the developmental genetics as well as the phenotype of the dog species.

Book Description
Black Visual Culture presents a critical introduction to the work of contemporary black American and British artists, including Chris Ofili, Isaac Julien, Keith Piper, Rasheed Areen, Robert Mapplethorpe, Roshini Kempadoo, and Anish Kapoor. The central aim of the book is to show how black artists have been and continue to be influenced by the politics, cultures, societies, economies and histories in which they live and work. Using illustrated case studies as introductions, the book goes on to discuss and critique the key debates around modernism and post-modernism, as well as the major issues, literature and theory around black photography and art. One important element is its discussion of cultural criticism of the foremost writers in the field, such as Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, Kobena Mercer and Homi K. Bhaba.

One of the nicer outgrowths of the ascendancy of slugger Sammy Sosa has been the renewed spotlight on the life and career of Roberto Clemente, the player he idolized and modeled himself after. One of the great stars of the midcentury, Clemente was the first Latin to be enshrined in Cooperstown after playing 18 Major League seasons, posting a .317 career batting average, and leading Pittsburgh to two World Series. He prowled right field with amazing grace, possessing what many consider the greatest arm in the game's history. Yet his grandeur resides as much in what he accomplished by example off the field: "Any time you have an opportunity to accomplish something for somebody who comes behind you and you don't do it, you are wasting your time on earth," notes Clemente in his biography. He didn't waste his abbreviated allotment. A true humanitarian--baseball gives an annual public service award in his name--he worked tirelessly to help those in need; indeed, he died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve, 1972, on the way to help earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Born in poverty in Puerto Rico, Clemente rose on the strength of his magnificent talents, but never forgot his roots. His was a complex, often thrilling life; Markusen, a senior researcher in the library at the Hall of Fame, has done it justice in this comprehensive and thoughtful examination of a remarkable human being who lived on and off the field with equal passion. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
Twenty-five years ago, Roberto Clemente made baseball history when he became the first Latin American to enter the Hall of Fame. Roberto Clemente: The Great One explores one of the games' most dynamic players and perhaps its most selfless humanitarian. From mosest beginnings in Carolina, Puerto Rico, to a legendary career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, to his tragically premature death in a plane crash, Interviews with teammates and close friends.
Customer Reviews:
Rave Review.......2000-02-11
I'm not sure where the previous reader is coming from. There is plenty about Clemente the man-- his sense of humor, his pride, his work ethic, his philanthropy. Yes, the emphasis is on baseball in this book, but thoughts on Clemente's personality and character are interspersed throughout. Great descriptions of Clemente in the World Series and in the '71 All-Star Game. I highly recommend this book.
Interesting because of the subject.......1999-06-10
This biography of Roberto Clemente could have been so much better. It's easy enough to read, because Clemente himself is so interesting, but there are flaws with it. The book is not well-edited and tends to repeat itself too much; for instance, the subject of reporters quoting Clemente phonetically is mentioned several times throughout the book, as if the writer feels the need to reintroduce us to this fact over and over and over. Also, little sense of Clemente as a man emerges.
An excellent read for fans of the GREAT CLEMENTE.......1999-04-27
The 1971 World Series was the first one that I remember vividly. I was nine years old at the time, and I remember rooting for the Pirates. I also vividly remember how Clemente took over the series. His talents were put on the national spotlight for baseball fans in a big way.
This book in great detail displays not only Clemente's terrific skills as a baseball player, but also his wonderful work as a humanitarian and the numerous good deeds he did for men, women, and children.
The book also discusses the many struggles that Clemente and other Latinos experienced during their careers. Clemente was an extremely proud man, and was justified in his anger when certain people tried to 'Americanize' him.
It is rare for an athlete to become more popular after his death, but I believe that Clemente is a prime example of this. He never really got the national exposure he deserved until the 1971 World Series, and his death in 1972 cut short not only a tremendous playing career, but more importantly deprived the world of no doubt more humanitarian efforts to those in need.
This is the second book written by Bruce Markusen that I have had the pleasure of reading. His talents as a baseball writer are evident, this is by far the best baseball book that I have read. I look forward to the next book!!!!!
FIVE STARS for a greatly detailed book on one of the best baseball players of our time, but most important, one of the best human beings of our time.
A must read for Baseball fans.......1999-04-07
This book is a necesity for fans of the game, and fans of a truly great baseball player and humanitarian. Roberto Clemente was and still is a role model to all. Bruce Markusen does an incredible job relaying Clemente's legacy to his readers. Roberto is my favorite baseball player of all time, and he played for my favorite team. It is great to see such an accurate portrail of such a legend. To realize that athletes can be more than just a source of entertainment is hard enough to understand, let alone write an entire book on the subject. I highly recomend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about a true "legend of the game". I would also like to add that Bruce Markusen autographed my copy of this book. He is a great author and a class act.
A Great Read.......1998-11-29
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Its detail and comprehensiveness make it an insightful read into a complex man. I recommend it highly.
