Book Description

Mattie Remmel, who loses her husband in a farm accident, discovers and confronts his hidden past, which darkens her own vision of the future. Deciding to keep their alfalfa ranch running, Mattie enlists the help of her daughter, Shelley, who's returned home from college, and hires a ranch hand, Dawn, a young woman who has a penchant for mechanics. A fourteen-year-old runaway Native American boy joins the three women, and together they forge an unlikely family, facing whatever life throws at them, from the trials of independent work to the arrival of a former lover bent on revenge. A powerful novel about the search for home, authenticity, and love, Land That Moves, Land That Stands Still is as evocative of place as it is of the vagaries of human emotion.

4 out of 5 stars Location, Location, Location!!.......2004-10-07

Kent Nelson drops the reader directly onto a South Dakota farm, developing a sense of place that will linger long after you finish this book. Nelson's descriptions of the joys and tedium of farm life are finely detailed, and his characters come across as likeable, everyday people. The novel ranges in scope from water disputes to the futility of attempting to outrun your past to a mother and daughter attempting to deal with the death of the family patriarch and the subsequent painful secret that death reveals to them. Gorgeous work!

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Read from Kent Nelson.......2004-06-13

Another great read from Kent Nelson! He develops his characters so well that we have not just met them, we know them intimately. (It's interesting to know fictional characters better than some of our acquaintances.) Here's an honest story told in pointed detail, great dialogue, graphic descriptions--that's enjoyable to digest, nothing laborious here--and a story not to be forgotten.

4 out of 5 stars 3.6 stars -- Memorable characters, a good read.......2004-01-09

I found this story of a Dakota widower and her farm challenges and family relationships -- dealing with the 'non-entities' (not) of her deceased husband, and her dead son, in addition to her typically confused and experimental college-age daughter and her emerging family of a wacky, spunky female relationship escapee and young Indian reticent, which comes into focus in the wake of the farming work and environment that presents a main conflict to the story (not to ignore the neighbors-from-hell).

Nelson's particular skills include being able to tell a story that captures your interest (despite plot being rather predictable) and great skill with building reader identification with the characters. The dialogue is skillful - often short and crisp, ironic, and well-on. I could really picture this being a made-for-TV thing. It's entertaining, but I guess I wish I could have felt more in awe of the prose; the writing is effective but doesn't take your breath way, sort of like the difference between viewing a Norman Rockwell vs. a Matisse.

Regardless, I enjoyed the whole book and the characters are remaining with me...

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book........2003-11-18

This novel entertained me so much that I couldn't put it down. What more can I ask of a book?

Kent Nelson's writing was lovely and unsentimental, crisp and clear headed. I was hanging on the words, dreaming on behalf of the characters and hoping their problems would find happy resolutions. And they did, but not easily - these characters earned their triumphs.

This novel was full of profound and subtle fire. As a reader, my time was richly rewarded.

4 out of 5 stars Real People!.......2003-11-05

Kent Nelson handles setting about as well as any writer I've ever read. This is the South Dakota Badlands and the main characters raise alfalfa, and other crops. The plot revolves around the accidental death of Matti Remmel's husband and a secret he's been hiding from her the past few years. That plot thread soon runs out of steam, and the book becomes more of a relationship novel: Matti and an archeologist who wants to dig on her land; her daughter Shelley and her former high school English teacher; and Dawn, Mattie's eccentric hired hand, and a Mexican neighbor with a secret of his own. Then there's the runaway Indian boy Mattie takes in. All of them are working on building trust.
Sometimes Nelson spends too much time trying to prove he knows all about alfalfa ranching, as he devotes pages and pages to irrigation, fixing flat bed trucks, and building a new kitchen after Dawn sets fire to the ranch house. Otherwise, he does a bang-up job writing women characters and sex from a woman's perspective.
Nelson throws in a brutal ex-boyfriend for Dawn who is instrumental in moving the novel toward a climax. Dawn is perhaps the most self-sufficient and toughest of the three women. She can fix anything and she adds a bit of humor to an otherwise angst-filled novel.
These characters are so real they make those on the MTV program seem cartoonish.

5 out of 5 stars Great urban fantasy geared towards a teen audience.......1999-01-17

I'm no longer a teenager, but I still really enjoyed this book, which consists of four novellas. All deal with the Borderland, a place where elves & humans coexist uneasily, where technology & magic are both unreliable, & where lots of down-on-their-luck youths gather to play great music & attempt to live their dreams. Very original, excellently written, & I think that almost everyone will find something to identify with. I particularly liked the examination of the issues that 'halfies' (those who are half-elf, half-human) face. This is another of Terri Windling's fine projects, & it's a shame that this series is so hard to get hold of!

4 out of 5 stars Borderland: The Lord of the Rings meets Rolling Stone.......1998-07-07

I discovered this book by accident, and I am glad that I did.

Borderland is about a world like ours in which the Elves and their magic have returned to earth. Magic and technology both work sporadically in Bordertown (which lies at the heart of the Borderlands) where teenagers runaway to hang out in rock and roll clubs where fairie dust is a drug and music is magic.

The book is the first in an anthology series featuring such talents as Emma Bull and Charles de Lint.

After losing some of my interest in works of fantasy, this book reignited a spark in me like gasoline on a bbq pit. I haven't felt this way about a work of fantasy since Conan or Fahfrd and Greymouser. These books are nearly impossible to get ahold of but Essential Bordertwon is a new one coming out soon.

I cannot recommend this book and this series highly enough.

3 out of 5 stars Only ordinary.......2004-05-17

"Year 1000" gets off to a good start. The artwork is sound, and the story has a promising start: mysterious phenomena augur the coming year millenium, and possibly the end of the world.

Although workmanlike, the story and art never really grab me. The renderings are all good and figures are drawn realistically. They are all static, though, and the characters all seem to talk "into the camera". Page layouts tend to have a predictable grid, and don't push the story along as well as they could.

The art is good, but lots of other artists are at least as good. The story is adequate, but other stories are better. I'll come back to this book sooner or later, but probably not sooner. In the mean time, I recommend it only to the serious Segrelle fan.

5 out of 5 stars a really interesting comic book.......1999-12-06

I think it is a different comic book. The images are show an extremely high quality and consistency, and the story mixes science-fiction and fantasy. It deals with the end of the world, by Year 1000. The end is quite promising: hope our own Year 2000 will be too!

Book Description

Where can you show up for world-class barbecue, stick around for the blues, and shut the place down philosophizing with some colorful characters? At Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, of course-the renowned Syracuse-based honky-tonk rib joint just hankering to share its BBQ excellence with folks outside the state. In DINOSAUR BAR-B-QUE: AN AMERICAN ROADHOUSE you'll find the secrets to their succulent pit-smoked specialties in recipes you can fire up in your own backyard. Join Spiceman John Stage on a journey into the world of low and slow barbecue and fast and furious grillin'. Along the way , you'll soak up the Dino vibe as John shows you how to rev-up traditional barbecue sauce to create such dishes as World Famous Dinosaur Ribs; Black & Blue Pan-Seared Beef Tenderloins; Drunken Spicy Shameless Shrimp with Brazen Cocktail Sauce; and Grill-Smoked Salmon with Chile-Lime Booster Sauce. So grab that way-too-clean apron off its hook and get ready to flip, slop, slather and slide your way to BBQ heaven. After all, it ain't barbecue 'til you get some on you!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que kicked into gear in 1983 when John Stage, a Harley-loving biker with a taste for barbecue, took to the road cooking sandwiches on a sawed-in-half 55-gallon drum at "biker gigs" up and down the East Coast. Stage sampled world-class barbecue in Virginia, Texas, North Carolina, and Memphis, soaking up "the Southern barbecue vibe" (and picking up Creole, Asian, and Cuban influences along the way) before setting up shop in Syracuse, New York, in 1988. Dinosaur Bar-B-Que: An American Roadhouse captures the reach-out-and-taste-it smell of slow-cooked barbecue that hits you two blocks away from the "genuine honky-tonk rib joint," where outfront a row of gleaming Harleys stand at attention and inside a sassy, ready-to-bust-your-chops wait staff cuts through the eclectic crowd of bikers, students, suits, and blues lovers (there's live music almost nightly), serving up half-racks of Dinosaur-Style Ribs, Texas Beef Brisket, and Honey Hush Corn Bread.

Between recipes for Drunken Spicy Shameless Shrimp with Brazen Cocktail Sauce and Not Your Mama's Meatloaf are samples of the restaurant's infamous restroom graffiti ("When life gives you lemons... add vodka") and photos of staff tattoos. Stage and coauthor Nancy Radke realize that not all backyard grill masters own smokers, let alone the kind of hickory-log-fueled industrial pits at the Dinosaur (nicknamed "The Coffin" and "The Doghouse"), so they present home cooks with a helpful Techniques of Outdoor Cookin' section that offers advice on how to grill and smoke with wood chips.

And no matter the season, this cookbook will quickly become a dog-eared favorite, as many of the more than 100 recipes are perfect for indoor cooking anytime of the year. Whip up a batch of the all-purpose Mutha Sauce (a versatile starting off point for many of the dishes) and you'll have enough ammunition for a weekend's worth of recipes. If you want to come any closer to living the complete Dinosaur experience at home, you'll need a Harley out front, a cold beer in hand, and Roosevelt Dean and the Spellbinders jammin' in the living room. --Brad Thomas Parsons

5 out of 5 stars Missin the Cuse.......2007-05-31

As a recent graduate of Syracuse University, the one thing I'll miss most about the 'Cuse is the Dinosaur. They don't take reservations and they barely let you finish your meal before handing you the check and wisking you off, but that's some cookin I'll never find down south.
This cookbook allows me to have my bbq without a $300 plane ticket. And that's not too bad.
Love the sauce too. I should buy in bulk!

5 out of 5 stars really the recipe.......2007-01-12

many times recipes just don't work out, but these are right on. Easy and tasty

5 out of 5 stars Best food ever!.......2006-11-11

Having grown up in Cortland,NY, I had many meals at Dinosaur Bar B Que. Having moved to Arizona, I have not eaten anything as good and really missed the food. Purchased the book and think I have cooked everything so far. The best hit here with my new friends is Dinosaur-Style Ribs on page 93. Just does not get any better.

4 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up.......2006-07-16

Many reviewers of the book have been to the restaurant(s) and have sampled its menus "live" - I have not. My comments are purely on the book. It is a very good bar-b-que book. The recipes in it are mouthwatering, and I don't mean just a few either. The "hook" in many of these recipes is that they utilize an all-purpose red rub recipe and/or a basic sauce recipe (the Mutha Sauce) provided in the book. I have made both recipes in order to try many of the interesting recipes. My only complaints are that the Mutha Sauce produces a very vinegary sauce and the one quarter cup of pepper sauce in it may, for some tastes, be a little over the top. If it suits your taste, fine. If your taste is more to the sweet, either amend the recipe or use another red sauce that you prefer.

5 out of 5 stars A Favorite in My Collection.......2006-05-10

My fiance received the cookbook as a gift for Christmas one year, so I tried a couple of the recipes on the grill. From there I bought a Weber smoker and used the recipes for ribs and pulled pork.

I have a number of BBQ books on smoking, but this book was my inspiration, and remains my home base from which to experiment with different rubs, sauces and recipes. You simply can't go wrong with the book. I'm sure they kept their best secrets out of the book, but it is darn close. I actually like the Drunken Shrimp recipe in the book better than at the restaurant.

I live in Rochester and eat there frequently. It really is an 'experience' to go there - set on the edge of the Genesee River, great food, and some of the best live blues bands in the area. It's worth going out of your way for if you're traveling through the state. The original is in Syracuse.

Book Description

When dogs growl at other dogs, lunge at people, and bark at everything it's often mislabeled as "aggression." But most aggression is fear-based and should be treated as such. The appropriate term for this constellation of behaviors is "reactivity."

This book helps the trainer and dedicated dog owner to understand the reactive dog and help him change for the better. The process is not an easy one, but once the changes begin to take shape, owners become so encouraged that the rest of the process suddenly becomes easy!

All training methods and classroom techniques are based on fun and on the development of a `working relationship' with your dog. 125 pages, with over 50 photographs and illustrations to help you recognize and solve problems.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable tool for every trainer.......2007-09-09

I read this book right before meeting with a client with a reactive dog and the little bit I learned was critical.

5 out of 5 stars Scaredy Dog!.......2007-07-29

Very good information in dealing with the difficult reactive dog. Not a textbook, but an easily read paperback.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Understanding Your Problem Dog.......2007-01-04

I read "Scaredy Dog" feeling overwhelmed with my newly adopted reactive dog. The book clearly explained what was going on with my dog, and the step-by-step way I needed to work with her to overcome her reactive behavior. I was very pleased with the common-sense approach and would recommend this book to anyone struggling with a reactive or aggressive dog. I would also recommend "On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas. It helped to explain what kind of signals I was sending my dog when she reacted to other dogs, and how to send the correct signals to calm down the situation.

5 out of 5 stars All the basics of dog rehabilitation are surveyed for pros and cons.......2005-11-07

Aggressive puppy or dog behaviors can be frightening when uncontrollable, but there's hope for the 'reactive dog', as Ali Brown displays in Scaredy Dog! Understanding And Rehabilitating Your Reactive Dog. Tips from dog pros, vets, and even homeopathic applications are reviewed and assessed, with chapters offering explicit tips on conditioning methods which work. From leash and crate work and training management to using clickers and treats, all the basics of dog rehabilitation are surveyed for pros and cons.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, great advice!.......2005-08-22

After being at my wits' end trying to figure out just what was going on in the head of my scaredy-dog, I picked up Brown's book. On page after page, she described behaviors I was seeing develop, and offered solutions to those behaviors.

Fortunately for me, my dog is not as scared as the ones she describes were. That said, many of the techniques she outlines have been saving graces for me. Most importantly, I now use a crate in the car when I drive with my dog. No more barking wildly at buses, motorcycles, other dogs, and trolleys! No more trying to clamber out the window after those offensive pieces of machinery! I have no more fear about how my dog is going to act in the car, and she has a lot more security while being in the car.

There are many other strategies I will consider using with my scaredy dog. If your dog is the kind of dog who reacts unpredictably in a wide variety of situations and you want to keep your dog, other dogs, and other people safe around your dog, this book provides a strong and solid base from which to begin your work. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best S&P Books Around!.......1999-01-07

This book is definately for anyone who is looking for a wealth of information about novelty salt and pepper shakers. Since this book was published in 1990, the values may not be as up to date as later books, but I have yet to see another shaker book with so much other information about the shakers themselves. The shakers are photographed in related groups sitting on 4-5 glass shelves with a solid-colored background. The pictures are excellent. The entire first page of each section contains a detailed description of the shakers pictured with the values for each listed at the bottom of the page. The description are truly wonderful and must have been thoroughly researched. That is the best part of this book. Ms. Davern talks about the background of many of the shakers as well as of the company that made them. She also mentions other related shakers that are not pictured in some cases. There are very few collectible salt and pepper shaker books that one can truly say is enjoyable reading. However, this is a wonderful book to just sit and read through due to Ms. Davern's descriptions, personal views, and beautiful pictures. This book is a must for any novelty salt and pepper shaker collector.

Nicholas Mosse is a successful ceramics artist whose work is sold all over the world from his County Kilkenny studio. Here he acknowledges the inspiration for his pleasing pottery: the understated and softly colorful style of the Irish countryside, which is a perfect foil for trendy flea-market accessories as well as for the classically simple lines of Shaker and Georgian furnishings.

Though this is a beautiful coffee-table volume, there's far more here than pretty pictures alone. Mosse approaches Irish style from the vantage point of a collector, emphasizing the fascinating history of the handcrafts of this region, like spongeware, linen and cotton woven textiles, quilts, and rustic furniture like the sugan chairs with straw seats that grace many an Irish pub. Attractive and reasonably simple examples of each craft are given as projects, though they are suitable mainly for those experienced with some basic techniques such as the transfer of template patterns, jigsaw cutting, and the like. --Barrie Trinkle

            Book Description

Focused on the work of Nicholas Mosse, Country Living Irish Country details the essential elements of Irish country style, as embodied in pottery, fabric and furniture.

Each chapter opens with background information, giving readers a little piece of Irish history as they go -- Ireland's heritage of textile manufacture, for example, provides a segue into the chapter on fabrics. In one chapter, the book examines the background of pottery in Ireland, its different forms and techniques, its regional variations, and the modern interpretation of traditional techniques and patterns in the work of Nicholas Mosse. Ideas are given for collecting antique pieces and for creating spongeware of one's own. The fascinating yet practical information combines with specific step-by-step projects within each chapter to allow readers to appreciate the beauty of the objects -- or set about achieving it themselves, following the how-to instructions.

Mosse shows how Irish style , with its pare-down simplicity, its earthy colors and its natural materials, can be achieved no matter where a reader lives.

5 out of 5 stars Nice hints and projects.......2002-09-22

This book, lovingly created by Nicholas Mosse of Kilkenny, gives the reader many suggestions and tips on adding a touch of Irish style to ones home. The section on pottery gives a wonderful narrative on Irish pottery, and has three projects: decorating a ceramic jug, a ceramic bowl and a plate. The next section discuses fabrics, their history and significance, and has four projects: making and decorating stenciled curtains, a shamrock tablecloth (I loved this one!), a tweed throw, a patchwork quilt, and a sheep pillow panel. The furniture section deals mainly with stools, chairs, benches and tables, and has two projects: making and decorating a wall-mounted mug rack, and a small scumbled cupboard (very nice!). The final section is on "Elements", and mainly revolves around baskets and glass.

Well, you can't please all the people all the time. As for myself, I was quite pleased with this book. I am something of a do-it-yourselfer, and I liked the author's hints on decorating, and the small, easy-to-make projects. If you like decorating by hand, then I highly recommend this book to you.

            2 out of 5 stars Disappointing-the topic deserves a broader viewpoint.......1999-10-05

I enjoy most Country Living books and Irish Country was an intriguing topic. This treatment unfortunately is a very shallow look at a very limited amount of examples of pottery, fabric, and furniture. Many of the items are obscure and one doesn't get a real feel for the richness of the topics. Its not really a decorating book either - its focus is substantially on replicating the look of some of the material (pottery, fabrics, etc) through do-it-yourself crafts. For example, I didn't learn anything about the variety of Irish furniture and how to decorate with it. Hate to be so negative but I felt like the title and book cover were false advertising.

My wife and I just bought the hardcover and recommend it highly. We loved the reading the background of the authors. It proves that you do not have to be a celebrity or athlete or CEO to be "considered successful". Some of the world's greatest talent are never heard from. We have Dilettante Press to thank for bringing us this fine collection of artists. I work with libraries and recommend this book to all of them.

This book is a must buy for anyone intersting in the millennium. The works are provoking and the accompanying text is informative and entertaining. Great coffee table material.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring, spiritually fulfilling feast for the senses........1999-03-06

"The End is Near" makes you yearn for Divine inspiration regardless of its source or circumstance. The artwork is stunning, the artist bios are awe-inspiring and the essays are thought provoking, empowering and spiritually comforting. This is an amazing gift to give to others...but do yourself a favor and give it to yourself first. And then go out and pick up a paintbrush, a pencil, or a piece of coal and create. This book will make you realize that the best art you ever see could be just below the surface of your own consciousness.

5 out of 5 stars close to perfection.......1999-02-28

I was completely blown away by the beauty of the visions contained in this book. I am an art student, and i feel the artist in this book are never self indulgent, their vision isn't cluttered by desire of fame and recognition. they are the last american heroes. roger manley did an incredible job of editing only the most incredible pieces, of discovering new talents( paul laffoley, grant wallace) and also bringing new pieces from overexposed outsider art favorite (howard finster). the printing job is excellent and the design lively.i can't wait to see what this publishing company is gonna do next.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing and thought-provoking.......1999-02-25

By showing the amazing collection of the American Museum of Visionary Art, this book provokes the reader to re-think the distinctions our society draws between genius and madness. I've actually been to the Museum in Baltimore and am thrilled that this artwork is now available on a large scale. This book may not be for everyone, but those willing to expose themselves to its often disturbing imagery will be rewarded.

                    Book Description

María de los Reyes Castillo Bueno (1902–1997), a black woman known as “Reyita,” recounts her life in Cuba over the span of ninety years. Reyita’s voice is at once dignified, warm, defiant, strong, poetic, principled, and intelligent. Her story—as told to and recorded by her daughter Daisy Castillo—begins in Africa with her own grandmother’s abduction by slave-traders and continues through a century of experiences with prejudice, struggle, and change in Cuba for Reyita and her numerous family members.
Sensitive to and deeply knowledgeable of the systemic causes and consequences of poverty, Reyita’s testimony considers the impact of slavery on succeeding generations, her mother’s internalized racism, and Cuba’s residual discrimination. The humiliation and poverty inflicted on the black Cuban community as well as her decision to marry a white man to ensure a higher standard of living form the basis of other chapters. Reyita actively participated in the life of the community—often caring for the children of prostitutes along with her own eight children and giving herbal medicine and “spiritualist” guidance to ill or troubled neighbors. She describes her growing resistance, over five decades of marriage, to her husband’s sexism and negativity. Strong-willed and frank about her sexuality as well as her religious and political convictions, Reyita recounts joining the revolutionary movement in the face of her husband’s stern objections, a decision that added significant political purpose to her life. At book’s end, Reyita radiates gratification that her 118 descendants have many different hues of skin, enjoy a variety of professions, and—“most importantly”—are free of racial prejudice.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting sociological document, if not a very good piece of literature.......2006-06-20

Reyita describes her life as a black woman, being born in 1902 and growing up through all the violence and poverty of Cuba in the twentieth century.

In 1912 Reyita, was living with her godfather and his wife, the latter being terribly abusive. This lady was also head of the women's section of the local branch of the leading Afro-Cuban political party, the PIC. The PIC had been formed in 1908 in order to fight against racial discrimination. It was been banned by the Cuban government in 1910 on the false ground that it was anti-white. As a result of what Reyita claims was a trap laid by the Cuban president Jose Miguel Gomez, the PIC launched a revolt. The Cuban military responded by executing and torturing thousands of ordinary Afro-Cubans. Reyita's aunt was arrested on bogus charges and thrown into prison.

Reyita spends a great deal of time in this book discoursing her use of herbal remedies and other home-grown medicine to cure various ailments of her neighbors. In this way, as a medicine woman, also as one with a reputation as receiving accurate visions from the spirit world, she found a certain niche for herself in Cuba's patriarchal culture.

Reyita was alert to any opening in Cuba's political sphere which might serve as veichle to better the condition of her people. The PIC seemed to offer a ray of hope and Reyita tried her best as a young girl to support her neighborhood chapter. After the PIC was crushed, Afro-Cubans were virtually terrorized into submission. The biggest attraction after this was the fatalistic "Back-to-Africa" movement of Marcus Garvey, which Reyita was enthusiastic for, roughly, in the 1918-22 era. This movement was also repressed by the Cuban state. Then there was Reyita's involvement with the Cuban Communist Party, the PSP, in the early 1940's....

Reyita married a white man who was virtually disowned by his family as a result of this inter-racial marriage and had problems with some of his neighbors in places they lived. Her husband, of course, never brought Reyita along when he was invited to dinner at the houses of his bosses at his factory. Reyita admits that she married this man in order to produce light skinned children who would have a considerably easier time of it in Cuban society than she did growing up. In spite of his steadfast commitment to his marriage to Reyita in the face of society's hostility, her husband was at the same time a rather traditional and dull fellow. He was very controlling towards her and their children.

Reyita tried to engage in small activities that would earn her own money and which could give her a measure of independence from her husband. For instance, in what is perhaps the most vivid and interesting section of the book, the family's life in the 1940's living in the poor neighborhood called Barraccones in Santiago De Cuba, Reyita first opens a diner in her family's home.. She reports how several of these prostitutes lifted themselves out of their [...] and their children that Reyita took care of while their mothers were trying to get their lives together, turned out well. Many of these prostitutes were white, but they shared a bond with Reyita because they were all very poor. Reyita also briefly mentions the gay men who patronized her dinner and she speaks about the lifestyle they practiced with no hint of any disfavor whatsoever. A very tolerant woman was Reyita.

On the years after the triumph of the revolution, Reyita mentions that great progress has been made, but that discrimination is still present, that black candidates for jobs can be excluded in favor of less qualified white ones and so on. She mentions that in film and literature, some of the old stereotypes of Afro-Cubans remain. She notes that oral historians in Cuba post-revolution, made little effort to interview people like her, who had witnessed such events in Afro-Cuban history as the massacres of 1912.

This book does not exactly evoke great feeling in the reader, though at times it can. The stanzas of poetry that open each chapter, apparently selected by the poetry buff Reyita, are quite beautiful.

                    5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2002-01-27

Reyita's story is both touching and inspiring. As a Black Cuban woman she suffered a great deal of hardship, which she worked very hard to overcome especially for her children. Stories about her life were very interesting and informative and present a picture of Cuba that is not generally known. Black women all over the diaspora can relate to her story and her desire to have more for her children. Some may question her decision to marry outside her race as a product of poor self-esteem, but she provides a well-reasoned argument to better the lives of her children. I would have loved the opportunity to meet this lady.
