Book Description

Complex and sophisticated, sensuous and sexy, Nora Hague's eloquent debut novel, Letters from an Age of Reason, is set amid two historical hotbeds of racial tension, moral hypocrisy, and shifting sexual convention. The years in question are the tumultuous '60s -- the 186os. And the landscapes are those of the Civil War -- era United States and Victorian England.

Miss Arabella Leeds, the teenage daughter of a prominent New York family, and Aubrey Paxton, the pampered "high-yellow" house servant of wealthy New Orleans slaveholders, are destined to meet and fall in love. But before their paths can cross, and their romance commences in London, each must forsake complacency and comfort, the familial and familiar, for a journey toward selfdiscovery and the allure of the forbidden. Arabella must abandon the gentlewoman's prescribed path and redefine her convictions -- particularly those regarding her own sexuality -- while Aubrey must acknowledge within himself a growing awareness of race and gender politics, and his place in a culture determined to ostracize him.

The pair make their unknowing way toward each other, encountering en route high adventure, erotic awakening, long-buried family secrets, and the racy underpinnings of corseted nineteenthcentury society. Coincidence and correspondence steer them into the company of morphine addicts and occult practitioners, protofeminists and sexual outcasts, glib aristocracy and dire poverty. But for Aubrey and Arabella, the greatest challenge will lie in their passion for each other, which places them forever outside the mores and conventions of their time.

A romantic adventure rich with vivacity, humor, and historical detail, Letters from an Age of Reason is a beautifully tapestried tour-de-force whose exceptional depth, passion, and power are sure to resonate long after the final page is turned.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!!.......2005-10-18

This was probably one of the best books I've ever read. Lengthy books don't scare me, and I enjoy the richness and description offered by taking your time to tell the story properly and flesh out the details of the characters personalities. I adored the topic of the book, and I LOVED Arabella, she was an amazing character with a vibrant personality and open-mindedness well before her time.

I am anxiously awaiting this authors next books! I loved her writing style and found it an easy read that I could NOT put down. I missed the characters and story line long after I was finished with the book, and I was very sad to see it end.

Bring on book #2!!! I'm hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid book!.......2003-08-18

This exceptional story carefully takes the reader through an emotional voyage! Buy the book, enjoy the story and anticipate Ms. Hague's next book.

5 out of 5 stars What a GREAT read!.......2003-07-21

It has been some time since I read this book--around the time is first went on the bookstands--and it still has vibrations. I was compelled to write a review because 1) I was honestly looking for the authors' second book (where is it?) and 2) I was disapointed to read a few less than favorable reviews.

Ms. Hague has a wonderful writing style which provides the reader with wonderfully rich characters in a romantic, historic setting.

More!

4 out of 5 stars It took a while to get into it, but..........2003-04-17

...once I did, I couldn't stop. Ms. Hague gets into a few digressions, which could have been edited and made the book a more manageable length. But after I reached about page 300, I had trouble putting it down. This would make an excellent movie. Many authors have difficulty making interesting and believable characters of both genders, and tend to be better at one or the other. I found both Aubrey & Arabella, as well as the other characters, to be excellently crafted. I would recommend this book, and be willing to wade through the first part to get to the really good stuff - it's worth the wait.

    4 out of 5 stars The re-education of Rayek.......1999-06-21

This book is in a sense the successor to the "Hidden Years" collection. That book collected the first five issues of the series of that name; this one includes the next five - but rearranged to form a complete narrative.

Only the last story, the highly-regarded "issue 9.5", was actually drawn by Wendy Pini herself. The other segments were among the first EQ issues drawn by the Pinis' apprentices and, while competent, are not really in Wendy's league. Fortunately, the full-color presentation is very lavish and more than compensates. Indeed, though three of the five issues in "Challenge" are duplicated in "Shards" (volume 10), it remains worthwhile to check out this volume, since the reproductions of the three pieces (8, 9 and 9.5) look glorious in color, very poor in black and white (to the point that, for example, important detail in no.9 "The Enemy's Face" is lost).

That said, the real glory of "Challenge" is the storytelling, much of it among the best in the series. Though Rayek is the main character of this book, there is a fascinating digression in the form of the two-part story "How Shall I Keep from Singing?", about the arrival of the High Ones, ancestors of all the elves. All the stories herein display the penetrating views of character that have made the EQ stories loved - and this study of Rayek, the most controversial character of all, is fertile ground for storytelling.

    4 out of 5 stars great book.......1999-01-10

it was sorta confusing though. it goes off the story when it talks about the crash, then in book 10-shards it has book 9's ending as its own beginning.

1 out of 5 stars why do we bother?.......1998-12-23

Nothing has been the same since Wendi stopped drawing and this book proves it. It lacks the depth Elfquest used to be known for. If you want to remain true to yourself, leave this book behind and stick to Wendi's work.

3 out of 5 stars Inferior Graphics but Good Story.......1998-11-14

You'd be disappointed by the art work which is not comparable to Wendy's superior own work. The characters lack physical uniqueness as compared to the previous 7 books. However, the stories are worth reading and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT FINAL BOOK FROM ONE OF SCI-FI'S BEST.......2007-08-02

By the mid-1950s, science fiction's foremost husband-and-wife writing team, Henry Kuttner and C.L. Moore, could be regarded more as coeds than working authors. After the release of their "fix-up" novel "Mutant" in late 1953, the pair released only five more short pieces of sci-fi over the next five years. And while it is true that Kuttner did come out with a series of novels featuring psychoanalyst/detective Dr. Michael Gray, for the most part, the two concentrated on getting their degrees at the University of Southern California. Kuttner, taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, graduated in 1954, while Catherine Lucille, paying her own way, took things slower and finished up by 1956. And the following year, she capped off a glorious writing career with a solo novel, her last, "Doomsday Morning." A companion piece in title only to Moore's 1943 novel "Judgment Night," this is a very fine tale indeed. It is a bit unusual for the author in that its setting is not Venus, or deep space, or the distant future, or some unusually named fantasy world, but rather America--New York City and rural California, to be precise--of only 50 years in the future; in other words, around 2007, or right now! The America of Moore's early 21st century has become a quasi-totalitarian regime run by a far-reaching entity known as Comus (short for Communications of the United States). This government department in essence controls not only all the communications in the country, but also the schools, transportation network, the hospitals, the entertainment industry, the military divisions, et al. Howard Rohan, a washed-up alcoholic wreck who had once been one of Broadway's greatest stars, is pressured by Comus into putting on a traveling, open-air play called "Crossroads," along with a troupe of five other actors, to entertain in California. That state, it seems, had been rebelling openly against Comus, and activists there had been purportedly hard at work perfecting some kind of "Anti-Com" device that might miraculously bring about Comus' downfall. The story of how Rohan becomes a whole man again, after three years of grieving for his late wife, and how he becomes involved in nothing less than a second Revolutionary War of sorts, is the story of "Doomsday Morning." Moore peoples her novel with interesting characters (all the actors in Rohan's troupe are at some kind of personal crossroads in their own lives), and although the sci-fi elements are kept to a minimum (indeed, without Comus' tear-shaped Prowler cars, the spindly "hedgehoppers," a weapon called a "scatter gun" and, of course, the Anti-Com itself, the book would hardly be science fiction at all, but rather a dystopian action tale), there are numerous thrilling sequences. Thus, Rohan's participation in a Comus raid, his stealing of a hedgehopper, the nighttime fight against some seedy renegades, and a remarkably suspenseful denouement, with the fate of the country--and the very existence of California itself--hanging in the balance. The author even manages to work some nice surprises into her story, as we discover the real reason for the existence of "Crossroads," what the Anti-Com actually is, and the reasons for Howard's unusual dreams and psychological promptings. Rohan himself is a very interesting character, it must be said, whose motivations and loyalties seem to be in a constant state of evolution as he sobers up and sorts things out.
It need hardly be mentioned at this late date what a gloriously fine writer Moore was; from her very first story, the classic "Shambleau" in the November '33 issue of "Weird Tales," to this, her final book, she combined elegant yet colorful prose with a distinctive emotional flair and one helluva imagination. Her 20-year collaboration with Henry Kuttner resulted in over a dozen remarkable novels and hundreds of short stories, and the team was surely one of the sturdiest pillars of science fiction's so-called Golden Age. What a terrible loss to the genre was Kuttner's early death in 1958, at the age of 44. Moore never returned to the field of sci-fi after his passing, instead writing scripts for such television programs as "77 Sunset Strip" and "Maverick." "Doomsday Morning," thus, was her last sci-fi hurrah, but what a fine note to go out on! Like all the other works from this remarkable team, I mo(o)re than highly recommend it!

    5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten SF Classic.......2002-08-09

Doomsday Morning is brilliant. It's the story of a near-future America that has become a de facto dictatorship under a permanent "President" - who is now getting old, with no clear successor. It's also the story of Rohan, who was once a major movie star but lost everything with his wife's betrayal - and now has a chance to get it all back. It's the story of a revolution against tyranny. And it's the story of the production of a live touring play.

The characters are sympathetic and three-dimensional, the plot is very exciting, and the writing...Moore clearly transcended the sometimes juvenile writing of her contemporaries. Although this is a true science fiction novel, it has the emotional complexity and depth of the best mainstream novels - a quality which was her specialty. It's also extremely readable. Doomsday Morning is one of the few books I re-read yearly, for sheer pleasure.

Incidentally, it's clear that Moore must have done theatre because the stagecraft rings very true. Her portrayal of the future dictatorship of America through control of the media and communication is also quite prescient.

Highly recommended. I only wish there was a sequel, or more books like this in any case.

3 out of 5 stars A futuristic story of the past that speaks to us again today..........2006-02-27

Born into a world where the USA is ruled by a benvolent dictator, the main character, Howard Rohan, made and lost fame and fortune as an actor in movies created by the official communications organization, COMUS (short for COMmunications of the United States).

On the surface, the movies seem to be pure entertainment, modern romances and action films, to help the people fill their leisure hours. But something more sinister is behind the films and the new acting troupes Comus has sent into rebellious California (of course). Why are the troupes touring the state? Why are the actors required to perform the play exactly as written with no missed words or ad libbing? What is the purpose of the giant sound truck that accompanies the troupe, even though all performances are open-air and without microphones? Why does he have a weird dream about the President committing suicide with a device called an Antic?

In its historical context, this is actually a very good book. Written in 1957 amidst all sorts of communist plots and fears of communist plots, this book explores some behind the scenes workings of totalitarian governments from the perspective of one person who cooperates not out of idealism but out of expectation of personal gain. It is interesting to watch Howard as he intentionally blinds himself to things that should alarm him and as he rationalizes mocking a loyalty he doesn't feel or believe in. C.L. Moore plays into all the fears prevalent in the middle of the 20th century and shows us that all totalitarian regimes eventually run out of steam as people begin to realize you can't really trade freedom for security because in the end you lose both.

It's also a sort of testament to the longing of the human heart to be free and of the resourcefulness of those who listen to that call.

I give it two smilie faces.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for Baking with Kids. Neat Variations on Classics.......2004-04-15

This book, `Gale Gand's Short + Sweet' is the fourth work of which Gale Gand has been a co-author or principle author. Gale has demonstrated several of these recipes, especially the recipes for kids, on Gale's Food Network show, `Sweet Dreams'.

The book focuses on recipes that can be done quickly with eight or fewer ingredients. With a few caveats, the book succeeds in providing interesting, workable recipes for people with few pastry skills which can be done in a relatively short time, with no expensive ingredients and no unusual ingredients.

The recipes are divided among four chapters covering recipes which can be completed with 15 minutes, 30 minutes or 45 minutes active time, plus a chapter on `kid doable' recipes. The book gives relatively quick recipes for some old standards such as hot fudge sundaes, Clafouti, scones, Panna Cotta, chocolate chip cookies, shortbread, cheesecake, Tarte Tatin, turnovers, semifreddo, Tiramisu, apple tarts, crème brulee, buttermilk biscuits (c/o Shirley Corriher), cinnamon-raisin bread, and my all time favorite snickerdoodles.
While all these names are familiar, Gale gives a new twist to almost all of them, leaving only the venerable Shirley Corriher biscuit tradition and the snickerdoodle recipe untouched. Thus, she is following the same tradition as David Lebovitz by producing creative variations on the standards. Ms. Gand does a little better in my mind than Lebovitz in `Ripe for Desserts' in that she has concentrated on recipes that can be done easily and cheaply. Unlike Lebovitz first book, `Room for Dessert', Ms. Gand does not give long discussions on technique or ingredients. Her effort is redeemed by her recipes' simplicity.

There is a really important caveat to the claim that the recipes can be done in 15, 30, or 45 minutes. This caveat is that this does not include baking times, which can be up to 30 minutes. It also does not include refrigerate time to relax or condition intermediate preparations. This time is not inconsequential when it comes to planning kitchen time. On the other side of the coin, the recipes are quite good in giving points in the preparation where intermediate steps can be refrigerated or frozen before finishing. This may not be a big thing most of the time, but when it helps, it really helps.

There are some things I found which may only annoy a frustrated teacher. These are errors in fact or errors in grammar. The most glaring error in fact I found was the statement that balsamic vinegar is made from red grapes. Since this is such an obviously easy mistake to make, it signals a lack of care by the publisher's copy editor. The same can be said of the few very obvious grammatical errors.

I generally have little interest in photographs of savory dishes, but desserts are a different story. Desserts are as much about eye candy as they are food for the sweet tooth. On average, the pictures in this book are good to very good, with a few stinkers here and there. It is beyond me why the publishers could not see their way clear to include a photograph of every recipe. Desserts, especially when done for kids or for parties, can often be chosen on the basis of a picture.

I am delighted to see Gale Gand come up with some new episodes for her Food Network show `Sweet Dreams'. I am not a big dessert maker, but Gale, along with some other Food Network hosts comprises my favorite comfort food for the mind. This may seem somewhat insubstantial, but the rapport between Gale and her son, Gio, adds a warmth to her printed and TV presentations which may be missing or slightly phony with other hosts. I would seriously add this consideration to your evaluating this book for purchase.

This book is recommended for anyone who likes to create with desserts. It is highly recommended for anyone who likes to bake and create desserts for and with kids.

5 out of 5 stars Good Training Book on Goldens.......2000-05-01

Easy to read book with lots of color pictures of goldens in every day life. Well organized. Helpful hints in blue boxes that catch your attention. Goldens are smart dogs who can easily think of things to do when bored; book has helpful information on counteracting this problem. Would recommend this book as a good first book for anyone interested in goldens.

                                        Book Description

Forever fascinated by canes, the author has always collected them--he even has his grandma's and grandpa's walking sticks. And, as a professional woodcarver, he knows there's a good market for them. Walking sticks come in three basic categories: the cane, which is a walking aid or a gentleman's walking stick; the staff or hiking stick, which is head-high; and the chest-high quarterstaff, which Tom's grandpa used to call a "thunk stick." Each of these types is generously represented among the 86 patterns in this book. Their designs include everything from fish to dragons and birds to beavers. This is a valuable reference book for all carvers., 86 patterns, 8 1/2" x 11"

1 out of 5 stars Another Tom Wolfe Misnomer.......2001-03-09

Here again, Tom Wolfe has put out a book of patterns that should be regarded more as a collection of sketches. The drawings in his book are single-side views only and in no way represent true patterns for a wood carver.

Again, Mr. Wolfe states in his introduction that he prefers to work from the single view, as if that's the way the rest of the world should operate simply because he does. Mr Wolfe should realize that the people who buy these books are usually beginners in the field and many of us don't have the artistic ability to draw the other needed views ourselves. To anyone other than an experienced artist, woodcarver, this book is pretty worthless.

I wouldn't recommend it at all and it makes me angry that someone with Mr. Wolfe's talent and reputation would publish something like this and call it a book of patterns.

                                        Book Description

Fractal geometry is the formal study of mathematical shapes that display a progression of never-ending, self-similar, meandering detail from large to small scales. It has the descriptive power to capture, explain, and enhance one's appreciation of and control over complex diversity. Natural shapes and rhythms, such as leaves, tree branching, mountain ridges, flood levels of a river, wave patterns, and nerve impulses, display this cascading behaviour. These fractal concepts are found in many fields, from physics to musical composition.
Architecture and design, concerned with control over rhythm, and with such fractal concepts as the progression of forms from a distant view down to the intimate details, can benefit from the use of this relatively new mathematical tool. Fractal geometry is a rare example of a technology that reaches into the core of design composition, allowing the architect or designer to express a complex understanding of nature.
The exposition of the book is at a level suitable for applied scientists, architects, and students with a modest background in mathematics. It is well illustrated and has numerous examples from which to learn the underlying concepts and their applications. Thus the book is addressed to a wide audience with a multiplicity of interests in new compositional ideas.

Bovill does a good job of explaining the principles of fractal geometry in layman's terms for those not already familiar with them. I was particularly impressed with his understanding of how fractal dimension varies with scale and which scales are important for architecture. However, I was disappointed that there were no references made to structural properties of fractals and how they might have excellent strength to weight ratios for a wide range of scales. Everything was taken from a design perspective concerned with texture.

                                          Book Description

Donald Goines was all of these things. He started as a kid, the product of a middle-class family. After high school he joined the Navy, and discovered the heroin that would rule the remainder of his life. On the streets, he turned to writing when he was straight enough to keep at it. He used the language of the streets and wrote of the streets and its people. His success was immediate and exciting, But eventually the streets claimed him. He was murdered as he sat writing a new book. Here for the first time is the completed story.

This is a very ordinary in-house biography of the legendary street writer Donald Goines. The book came out shortly after Goines's death (in 1974) and was commissioned by his very own publisher (Holloway House), likely as a means of capitalizing on their star author's underground fame.

Some corporate bias is evident here, with the biographer Eddie Stone extolling Holloway House's role in Goines's life. Moreover, Stone's glossing of each novel's plot can get tiresome -- it's like having to listen to a high-school book report on Kenyatta when in fact you'd rather just read about Kenyatta himself.

Check out Eddie Allen's more recent Low Road (2004) for a far more balanced account of Goines's life.

A decent read, but I couldn't get past Stone's references to Lake Michigan. "Gray clouds covering Detroit from Lake Michigan", "A cold wind blowing off Lake Michigan", "It was a cold day on the shores of Lake Michigan." What the heck was Stone talking about? The City of Detroit is about as close to Lake Michigan as Phoenix, Arizona is to the Pacific Ocean. There's a Detroit RIVER...and there's Lake Huron and Lake Erie....but it takes a few hours and a few hundred miles to get to Lake Michigan from Detroit. If he couldn't get THAT right, I have to wonder about the rest of his research...

THIS BOOK HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LIFE OF DONALD GOINES. THE BOOK GAVE SUMMARIES OF ALL HIS BOOKS. THIS BOOK DID GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF HOW HE GREW UP AND HOW HE WAS KILLED. OTHER THAN THAT THE BOOK WAS JUST GIVING YOU SUMMARIES OF HIS BOOKS. MAYBE THE PERSON WHO WROTE THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE KNEW ENOUGH ABOUT DONALD GOINES TO WRITE ABOUT HIM. THE BOOK DID NOT TELL WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS KIDS AFTER HIM AND HIS WIFE WERE KILLED. THE BOOK DID NOT TELL WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS MOTHER OR SISTERS. I JUST THINK SOMEONE ELSE NEED TO GIVE US A BIOGRAPHY OF THE BEST AUTHOR EVER!

2 out of 5 stars This is nothing but a review of his work! Not his life.......2001-11-06

This book was poorly written with more input from the deceased. Stone fails to capture the life of Mr. Goines, he goes into a brief description of his fathers history, he only touches on the disintegration of his family because of his drugs, but fails to show why he keeps such a strong sense of family. He never touches on his relationships with family members, he constantly goes on tangents losing you with his personal opinions that he associates with different excerpts from different books written by Goines, that in turn make unneccesary paragraphs. He dedicates almost nothing to his wife or many children he has with different women, consequently he never even mentions his many encounters with women but at the end of the book he just casually mentions his other children. Stone down plays the different characters who shaped his life and his habit. He only goes into depth about several pimping incidents Goines runs into during his life. This book was horrible and grossly misleading for an biography and I hope Mr. Stone stays far away from destroying anyone elses biography.
