Ranging over nearly three decades, the stories collected in Ivan Klíma's Lovers for a Day offer a fine cross section of the Czech writer's career. Yet the book also traces the misunderstandings and frustrations, the hopes and disenchantments of an entire nation--where, ironically enough, Klíma's creations were banned until the mid-1990s. How does this fictional barometer work? The earlier tales, which tend toward dissections of private life, seldom mention the Communist regime--yet their protagonists are so thoroughly warped by political circumstance that even love becomes an avatar of control and constraint. In the later, post-perestroika stories, Klíma's characters explore their newfound freedom. Yet that, too, turns out to be something of a mixed bag, in both the public and private sector. No wonder the judge in "It's Raining Out" finds his new beat--divorce court--nearly as dispiriting as the old regime's political trials:
He would divorce couples on grounds of infidelity or mutual incompatibility. Some of them were husbands and wives who had stopped living together long ago, but in spite of that, he could never rid himself of the conviction that most of the divorces were unnecessary, that people were attempting to escape the inescapable: their own emptiness, their own incapacity to share their lives with another person.
For Klíma's countryman Milan Kundera desire represents a zone of freedom: an assertion of the unique self in the face of a collective state. For Klíma, alas, eros is yet another venue for repression. Suggesting that national politics might inscribe itself onto the deepest contours of the individual, he's able to write about both at once. It's a grim equation, perhaps. But Klíma's mastery of the medium, and his rare emotional intelligence, make for a superb exposition of love among the ruins. --Burhan Tufail
Book Description
Ivan Klima has been called a "Czech genius" by the Los Angeles Times Book Review. In these stories spanning his long career from the 1960s to the present, he gives us a gallery of people searching, in love, for escape: factory girls on their day off and assembly-line workers lost in Walter-Mittyesque fantasies; a young woman on a honeymoon with the man she did not marry; a divorce-court judge whose mistress cannot understand his affection for the routines of his marriage; a young wife who falls into a passionate affair with an elderly bookbinder crippled by war. Lovers for a Day is a book stamped with Klima's unique wisdom, a personal history of a national evolution and an acute and moving examination of our attempts to find freedom in love. "Ivan Klima's view of love is often witty, sometimes playful, and has a convincing sense of the erotic....[and] the kindness that can endure between a husband and wife long after the passion has fled." -- Andrew Miller, The New York Times Book Review; "Klima has evolved differently from his contemporaries.... Rather than become embittered by his country's past, Klima has come to a truce with imperfection -- the imperfection of history and of love." -- Jennie Yabroff, San Francisco Chronicle

Myriad Facets to the Relationship Called "Love".......2004-08-19
Ivan Klima writes stories with crystal clarity, mini-vignettes of people's lives. Each story is unique, filled with despair,
amusement, boredom, excitement, desperation, jealousy, unknown chance encounters, the fire of love or its opposite is explored. Intense desire, clandestine meetings, routine relations and habits, succombing to temptation after nearly a lifetime of committment ... loyalty/betrayal ... it is all here.
Some of the stories are very deep and tragic, others are filled with humor and surprise endings. All the stories are creatively well crafted.
"Conjugal Relations" is one favorite. Two people, a man and woman are conversing. One accuses the other of indifference, by taking words or lack of attention out of context. It leads to an argument as the "accused" partner is forced to defend himself. Both the accuser and defender recognize the absurdity of the situation but each has to participate to resolve the tension and dilemma. The situation is hilarous as it is so common. Another entertaining story is one where two lovers are speaking on the telephone. The man, living in Australia, wants to make the liason more serious ... the woman makes excuses, as she deals with her small child who is whining in the background. She feigns desire for him, all the time rebuffing him with numerous reasons, obligations to her husband/child, time away from her household, putting his successful career at risk. He carefullly knocks down each excuse to be near her. The duplicity of the female is cleverly revealed in the conversation, the man is equally charming as he calls her bluff with each deft maneuver to continue as lovers. A most highly recommended book. I love ivan klima's way of writing.
of this book, which i strongly recommend to any czech author readers and ivan klima fans, i loved the last stories and i simply adored "the white house"-
the stories in this book are of... yes, love. but not only love- chance meetings, night trysts, and death, yes, as well.
though some stories will hold you with their enchantment of love... others will falter you with their blunt reality of love.
all in all you can expect to find in these stories what you find in your own life. a little of enchantment, a little of sadness, a little of passion, a little of numbness.
Lovers for a Day : New and Collected Stories on Love.......2001-01-09
Probably after Capek and Kundera there has not been such a matured author as Klima in the Czeck language. As for Capek , he was often afraid to protest and Kundera lived in France but Klima has stayed in the country and protested. He is brilliant but in this book you get to see the maturity. Its a mix of Klima and Cortazar. This is love mixed with wit in the time of revolution which brings out the pain of human relations. Its a story of a class being detached from the lessons of human relation while a small group tries to get it back. All the stories are great. all the stories are great.

As the millennium draws to a close, the gargoyles who guard the ancient buildings of Dublin come together-to face an evil that threatens all they hold dear...

When vandals break into St. Patrick's Cathedral, a gargoyle named Paddy takes to the streets of Dublin in search of revenge-but nothing could have prepared him for the evil that descends when he finds it.
Customer Reviews:
As a short story, I think it was probably wonderful.......2007-05-07
The book originated as a short story based on an actual cathedral break-in in Dublin, Ireland. I would love to have read the original story--you can almost put it together from reading the interactions between the Gargoyle Paddy and Francis Templeton. Sadly, what fills in the blanks is a very interesting travelogue of Dublin and some history of Irish politics and church Reformation. If you're into reading that kind of history, you may want to check out a more authoritative source.
"St. Patrick's Gargoyle" may be a good book for young adults if you can find youth readers that can keep their attention on the book. Some passages are truly evocative, especially when Kurtz writes about Francis Templeton and his love for his old Rolls, Phyllida.
Yawn.......2005-05-02
A third of the way through the novel and still there's no conflict and no plot, just a tour of Irish cathedrals by a character I hardly care about. It started off wonderfully, but quickly lost my interest after the initial "chase" scene. I fought heavy eyelids for one dull paragraph after another, finally gave up. If this was the last novel on earth, I'd work harder to get through it, but there are far more interesting reads available. I expected far better from this author.
It could have been lovely........2004-01-13
Up until 1/3 of the way through, I loved this book. Charming characters, & a wonderful premise.
Then, for some absurd reason, Ms. Kurtz introduces a plot device that spoils the whole book:
For some reason, anybody who personally witnesses proof of the existance of God, must die, by Divine command.
How VILE!!! Ms. Kurtz has reduced the Almighty to the status of a common terrorist or hoodlum, "eliminating the witnesses".
It could have been great, it ended in a fashion that was at best, unattractive.
A PLEASANT RAINY DAY READ.......2003-08-01
One reviewer used the word "cozy" to describe this book - very apt. It is a cozy read in both atmosphere and pacing. Ms. Kurtz clearly loves Ireland and spends ample time cruising the streets of Dublin with our hero's, an 82 year old limo driver and Paddy, a gargoyle "assigned" to St. Patrick's Cathedral. Ms. Kurtz is clearly having fun and it comes through on the pages - a lesser writer could not have pulled off Paddy without sounding like a hack. Having been to Dublin I found the story even more enjoyable - seeing the sights all over again and getting a minor history lesson here and there. This is my first Kurtz book and I certainly plan to read more. Enjoy.
First Kurtz the Last?.......2002-06-13
This was the first Katherine Kurtz book that I read, and while I was not `put-off' by it, I certainly was not impressed. The overall story was interesting, and I really liked the idea that the gargoyles were actually avenging angels. Paddy and Templeton were fairly well developed, but it would have been nice to learn more about Marcus Cassidy, the Knight, and Templeton's family.
At times Kurtz goes off on a tangent about the Catholic Church, and the Protestant Church. While some of the information is interesting, it reads like a textbook on theology, thus does nothing for the story flow. It seems to me that the information could have been integrated into the story in a more useful way.
The ending was very lackluster, and instead of being happy and/or sad, I was just relieved to be finished with the book.

Not Soul Food, Not Real Food........2006-07-08
What a disappointment!
I was expecting real food and soul food, and what I got was a book of recipes that women generally inflict on each other at pot-luck affairs.
In the history of the World no real food has ever been cooked or served for a pot-luck meal. What happens is the woman has to contribute something so she looks thru her cupboard for stuff no one in her family will eat. Like canned lima beans and pickled beets and anchovies. So she tosses everything into one pot, boils it, pours the goo into a casserole, and takes it to the pot-luck. The book oughta be called Pot Luck Recipes to Inflict On Your Work Associates.
my favorite cookbook!!!!.......2006-01-24
This is the best cookbook!!! I bought it for my mom and then ended up borrowing it so much I had to buy my own! The recipes are incredible!! I have not found a bad one yet. Mac & Cheese is amazing!!
I love it, I love it, I love it.......2005-07-06
The Black Family Reunion Cookbook came just in time for my own family reunion this past weekend - July 4, 2005. It's an excellent choice for newcomers or oldheads like myself. It takes you back to the good days when your mother was in the kitchen whipping up a delicious peach cobbler or some tasty macaroni and cheese. I just loved this! Every single recipe took me back to my youth. It was funny running across dishes that I had forgotten about. Whether you're African American or Hispanic, you will love this cookbook!! Highly recommended to the world of book lovers

Yummy recipes.......2005-03-14
I have had this book for over 10 years, and I'm white. I bought this book when I was dating a black (african american) guy and wanted to cook him the foods that he liked. I still refer to it from time to time, but the best recipe is the macaroni and cheese. I get so many compliments when I make it for family dinners and potlucks, and everyone asks me for the recipe.
Excellent low-cost recipes that don't take forever!!.......2003-04-22
I've owned this book for over five years, and it is best cookbook I own. Recipes are well-tested, don't cost very much to make, use readily available ingredients, and many are simple enough to make for weeknight suppers. I recommend the chicken gumbo, the Carter Hill barbeque ribs, the eggplant casserole, the yam pork chop skillet, the Jamaican bannana cake, and the honey crunch pecan pie. I recommend this cookbook as a gift for college students because the recipes are easy and delicious.

Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson was, oddly enough, pet-free when he decided to write about their key role in his life. Not to worry, though. In a trice he acquired a troika of pups (a purebred and two mongrels) and a couple of kittens. (The pussycats, alas, play only cameo roles.) In Dogs Never Lie About Love, Masson finds plenty of new things to say about canines--not that there hasn't been a plenitude of pupper reportage in the '90s. Or at least he easily articulates what some of us might already think: "Dogs feel more than I do (I am not prepared to speak for other people)," Masson asserts. "They feel more, and they feel more purely and more intensely." Often, however, he seems to be writing less about animals than humans: "In searching for why we are so inhibited compared with dogs, perhaps we can learn to be as direct, as honest, as straightforward, and especially as intense in our feelings as dogs are." But this book is not just a cozy mix of navel gazing (bestial and human) and long, leash-filled walks. Masson offers several proofs that dogs do take the high moral road--one police pooch, for instance, refused to acknowledge his handler's attack command. A good thing, too, since Masson himself would have been the victim! In more ways than one, Dogs Never Lie About Love is a Milk-Bone masterpiece.--Kerry Fried
Book Description
Dogs fill our hearts with love and our minds with wonder, but their emotional lives have remained unexplored since Darwin 125 years ago. Now in
Dogs Never Lie About Love, controversial psychoanalyst Jeffrey Masson brilliantly navigates the rich inner landscape of "our best friends."
As he guides readers through the surprising depth of canine emotional complexity, Jeffrey Masson draws from myth and literature, from scientific studies, and from the stories and observations of dog trainers and dog lovers around the world. But the stars of the book are the author's own three dogs whose delightful and mysterious behavior provides the way to exploring a wide range of subjects--from emotions like gratitude, compassion, loneliness, and disappointment to speculating what dogs dream of and how their powerful sense of smell shapes their perception of reality. As he sweeps aside old prejudices on animal behavior, Masson reaches into a rich universe of dog feeling to its essential core, their "master emotion": love.
Like the dogs he loves, Masson's writing will capture the reader with its playful, mysterious, and serious sides. Its surprising insights provide a new dimension of understanding for dog owners everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Dogs Are Love.......2007-08-06
Mr. Masson writes beautifully and thoughtfully about dogs, their thoughts, feelings, habits and characteristics. I loved the book and have recommended it to many friends.
Author projects his own feelings onto his pets........2007-07-08
As a dog owner and a person who enjoyes their pets, I was very disappointed with the author and his book. It is grossly obvious he is projecting his own thoughts and feelings upon his canine companions. I believe that dogs and cats have feelings and emotions to some degree - each primate has their own way of expression. Masson carries this much too far and the book gets almost offensive at times. I do know some folks that are excessively in love with their dogs and feel that this is a work of scientific genious (it makes them feel good) - In summary, I believe this book is doing dog owners/lovers a dis-service as any good dog owner and trainer knows that you do not humanize your dog or treat them as a child - you're asking for trouble if you do so (hence all your 'Dog Whisper' type shows). I'm afraid folks will take this book as gospel and humanize their dog (I already know two people who have done so, and their poor canine companions are ruling their household) and then wonder why Fido is acting the way s/he is. It's unfortunate us humans can't read a book for what it is...I bet a dog can.
Another Must Read Book.......2007-02-16
Dogs bring into our lives and bring out in us so many emotions that we either try to hide or never even realize that we have. A wonderfully written book on this subject!!!
SCIENCE OR YOUR OWN EMOTIONS AND EXPERIENCES? I KNOW WHICH IS BETTER!.......2006-12-01
IT sounds like some of these persons who wrote reviews have never had a REAL experience with a critter in their lives. Science is not good at truly proving emotions of an animal!! They do it without themselves being willing to be emotional themselves and expect RIGHT off the results will be the same as they feel. A CLOSED MIND IS AN EMPTY ONE! )
Jeffery Writes Of his own experiences which my writing classes taught me to do. You cannot write about a subject unless you yourself have that knowledge which this man proves he has!...I have five four leged "people" (two independent cats) and they are allot like what this book talks about. My little girl dog has cried with me when I am not well. Not in voice, but she shows how she feels with large sad eyes and pinned back ears and when she is happy her eyes gleam excitment and she literaly dances her joy... He says dogs smell what we cannot see. Well, every time I ask my dogs who is there they all respond not only with ears but the twitching of noses. They are trying to smell what they hear!
He is right on about the great fear of a dog, loneliness and abandoment. My dogs all look at me with "why must we stay behind" and I can clearly see Disapointment on all three faces when I have to leave. It is then I have heard barks and howls when I leave and a neighbor ( who has critters too) told me this will go on for about 20 mins after I am gone. And when I return they are right there barking and sometims howling at my return with big smiles.
I have seen then show embarrassment many times. One dog had thought I threw a ball for him whereas I hid it behind me. He looked everywhere and would not stop looking untill I showed it to him..he then looked very surprised and his ears went down and looked at the other dogs in turn as if loking to see if they saw what happened then sat right where he was looking away till I actually threw the ball. He got a big grin on his face and took of after it. At LEast give this book a chance before condeming it.
lots of insight into how dogs think and act.......2006-08-09
I think the title can be a little misleading. You might expect nice stories about cute doggies. But what you get is an in-depth look at how canines -- domestic and wild -- relate to each other and to humans.
I read this book a few years ago when I'd just gotten a new puppy. The "robodog" training books were not working. This book gave me insight into how dogs think and I was able to relate to my dog and thus teach it to be a good house dog.
To this day he is a great friend to have around the house, and I know how to get him to do what I want because I understand him. I think he understands me too -- a little.

Just What I Was Looking For!.......2001-11-17
So I own The Reader's Digest Complete Guide To Sewing, The Vogue/Butterick Sewing Book, and a couple of others. They're great references, but I wanted something that would show me HOW to do things and WHEN to do them. This book did it. Also, it was in a format that I could either read cover to cover, OR just pick it up and go to the section(s) pertinent to my current project. I am SO glad I got this book. Now I can finish that doggoned dress!
DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU NEED.......2000-12-28
IF YOU NEED ENCOURAGEMENT IN SEWING, THIS BOOK IS GOOD FOR YOU. HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOME REAL DETAILS AND MORE THOROUGH SEWING TIPS, YOU REALLY BETTER BUY OTHERS.
My main sewing reference.......2000-11-04
I should note here that I only sew a couple of garments a year. If that's how you sew, this is a great book. It would also be invaluable for the true beginning sewer. Anybody who sews regularly though would probably not find much new or helpful here. The information is good, solid, and basic.
Good for the new sewer: a bit cute otherwise.......2000-05-30
I definitely recommend this book to anyone learning to sew. It gives clear, straightforward instructions on how to construct a garment, how to modify a pattern, and how to choose a pattern and fabric to suit you.
The only qualm I have is that it is just a little too cute. I dislike being talked down to, and at times I felt this book did that. However, it's a minor quibble. If you're new to sewing and want to learn how to make that perfect dress, shirt, or blouse, you should buy this book.
A wealth of information in a cute, easy to read format.......1999-09-17
This book is great for people like myself who are attempting to pick up sewing again...so many sewing books assume that you know all the basics, and, I've found, even the general/beginner ones can be a bit daunting at times. This book is like a lesson from a lighthearted instructor...funny but packed with useful information, as well as easy shortcuts to make sewing go faster. The authors break down the "standard" notions of sewing that drag down progress, and they give you the confidence to know that you CAN do it. The authors seem like wonderful women, I'd like to meet them someday!

Book Description
The city is an essential theme of modernity in literature, architecture, photography and firm. This book first focuses on ardent reactions to the metropolitan explosion in the 19th century, with Baudelaire and Poe as key figures. More recent representations of the city are then investigated, in Europe and the United States. Patricia Lombardo reflects on the way in which the changes in human perception created by urbanization are expressed in the various arts, in terms of form and content.

Iceberg delivers his most personal novel!.......2004-01-07
Although its not the most memorable of Ice's releases. I mean how could you ever top the rawness of PIMP or the drama of Mama's Black Widow, but if you really read this book you will see the sad and vulnerable side of this 'strong' man. I enjoyed the book, the most touching parts of the book were the letter to his Papa, his rap of the pimp game, and the one that stuck with me the most was the story of his goddess. I had to take a break after reading that one. I felt his pain every brutha has had their heart broken. Powerful stuff!! Also Ice explores the relationship with black males and white women and white males and black women. Ice says the things we are all afraid to say. He definitely invites you into his world and it will forever remain etched in your mind.Great novel. I'm only 16, but after 30+ years I can still relate to this late brutha he was a pure ghetto genius only person that ever came as close to him in ghetto story telling was Tupac.

i love this novel, slim gets, real in this very personal, who said slim cries too much, the man was just remeniscing over events of his life, especially the life of a black man trapped in the darkworlds of the underworld, berg describes the hell every black man must go through,in his excistence-pure hell, he describes what a pimp must do to stay ahead of the game, i liked how he told that young dude the real deal about pimping, and that he has tremendous odds against him, yes kiddies not anyone can be a pimp, do not let bet,or mtv, fool you learn the real deal before you get shot-like iceberg warned that particular fellow, who learned that a good whore is always in demand as some italian quickly scooped his girl, then the letter slim wrote to his daddy was deep, then we learned about melvin x, the black panthers, who slim called heroes, there's holly one of berg's old associates who became famous and forgot whewre her roots were, what really got me interested was the uncle tom issue, and how whites create this type of character in america he said the word hope is used to control the blacks of america, then i liked the way berg wrote of why white women date black men, we all heard about those old black penis myth-but this is bryond that, and how black women really deal with white johns in the street, who love critizing, and trying to outlaw prostitution, drugs but are the biggest freaks in america i will not say the names of those who puff and not inhale, or claim that they are somebody, but this is reality, the truest black book ever made besides the nigger bible, definetly a must have, then i like the weay berg adressed that young writer, about what kind of writer he wants to be, and even that berg writes he still catches hell.
No Slim.......2001-10-11
I am a Iceberg fan, but I just didn't like this book. It didn't catch me. I have began reading it on several occasions, but never seem to finish. I am sure that other Beck fans will enjoy this novel.
Iceberg Slim Describes His World.......2000-08-13
In "The Naked Soul Of Iceberg Slim" Robert Beck (street-named Iceberg Slim) tells stories from his life. Mr. Beck describes his anger and resentment at white society's treatment of black people. He describes his dealings with the Black Panther Party and his admiration for the young Black Panthers.
Mr. Beck dedicated this book to a number of black luminaries including Malcolm X. Mr. Beck also mentions Malcolm X. I compared this book to "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" by Malcolm X and Alex Haley (co-author). Mr. Beck discusses white society's racism and writes about revolutionary solutions to racism. Early in his life Malcolm X also sought revolutionary solutions to racism. After his visit to Islamic North Africa, however, Malcolm X proposed a different solution: a strong, black-owned and black-operated economy coexisting peacefully with the rest of society. Mr. Beck does not discuss Malcolm X's later-proposed solution.
This is an interesting book. It is clearly-written, and Mr. Beck has led an interesting life.
"Melted Ice".......2000-05-09
This book is a warmer side to the pimp saga. The iceberg is melted away and the heart of Robert Beck is revealed. This book in some ways is stronger than his first book "Pimp" but falls short in other areas. I recommend first "Pimp" then "The Naked Soul of Iceberg Slim".
