This novel made me remember some very dear moments of my childhood.

5 out of 5 stars Brings back the dreams of the child.......1998-12-28

I wake up inside William Bell to find myself reliving the dreams and adventures of my own childhood. All the fears and joys of life come alive in the hot Texas summer that feels your toes and soul with sand. SWC

5 out of 5 stars Culbert is vivid, "tougher than he knows.".......1998-10-01

Lovesong for the Giant Contessa is a beautifully scripted novel, set in a strange and wonderous place: Texas. This thought provoking work is sure to become a classic. I have read, even studied, many author's work. Few have compared in their ability to capture their reader's imagination like Steven Tye Culbert.

5 out of 5 stars "...delightfully complex...".......1997-07-16

Lovesong for the Giant Contessa is a lovely novel, full of melodic, tightly packed prose that reminds me of good poetry, striking characters, and a story as delightfully complex as the patterns of a seashell. In that strange Texas country, the novel rings deadly true

4 out of 5 stars Sorting out the Summers family tree.......2006-07-19

The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix trade paperback collects the 1994 miniseries that attempted to sort out one of the most bizarre family trees in comics, even by X-Men standards.

In this series, newlyweds Scott Summers and Jean Grey, otherwise known as X-Men Cyclops and um, Jean Grey (the name Marvel Girl must be passé) are snatched from their island honeymoon and sent 2,000 years into the future by their elderly daughter Rachel (who arrived there from yet another future timeline) to watch over Scott's infant son Nathan, who had been sent to that very future in order to survive the techno-organic virus that was killing him in "our" time. Rachel, like her mom, is the sometime host of the powerful Phoenix force, and Nathan would grow up to become the mutant warrior known as Cable. Nathan has a cloned duplicate called Stryfe, who is being raised as the heir to Apocalypse. Oh yes, Nathan's mother was Madeline Pryor, a now deceased (sort of) clone of Jean Grey.

I told you it was complicated!

This series attempts to weave these very different threads into a somewhat cohesive pattern. Scott and Jean end up spending more than a decade in the future, which gives them the opportunity to actually raise young Nathan, who is unaware of exactly who his guardians really are. The "Dayspring Family" eventually joins the underground resistance movement and makes what appears to be a final confrontation with Apocalypse. I say "appears" because Apocalypse is killed about as often as Jean Grey, and with similar long term success.

Scott Lobdell does an admirable job with an obviously difficult group of characters, origins, and events. While the series is not as fun and exciting as other X-Men adventures, it is a necessary story to tell, if for no other reason than to clean up the storylines abandoned by so many other writers.

Gene Ha's artwork is absolutely incredible. Ha is one of the most underrated artists working today, with an attention to detail that has to be seen to be believed. His art totally sets the tone of the series, and makes the otherworldly setting and characters seem that much more believable.

Overall, the Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix is a key part of X-Men history. It may not be as fascinating as the Dark Phoenix Saga or the Age of Apocalypse, but it is an important part of the lives of several key X-Men characters.

    5 out of 5 stars I bought this TWICE..........2005-12-21

...because I was stupid enough to lend the miniseries to a friend. Anyway, I liked it so much I HAD to have it.

This is demi-science-fiction story about future ruled by Apocalypse and childhood of Nate Summers, known as Cable. It is EXTREMELY well written , and art is incredible, just like anything Gene Ha does. Reccomended for Marvel fans in general, other people would have too much trouble understanding who-is-who .

5 out of 5 stars History of the Summers Family Tree.......1999-01-26

There are simply too many people in the X-universe that carry the name "Summers". Well, at least this book clears some questions about one of them (Now if it wouldn't raise so many more). The story starts just after X-Men 30, with Scott Summers and Jean Grey-Summers (newly wed), are pulled 2000 years into the future by Mother Askani (Who happens to be Rachel Summers, the alternate future daughter of the newlyweds, who is a major time traveler). Their mission. Raise baby Nathan (who is, if you want to get technical, Rachel's older baby brother [did that even make sense?]) So here are Scott (who goes by "Slym") and Jean (Who goes by "Redd") raising one of the most powerful mutants, who has to disguise himself as a human, in a world where it is "survival of the fittest." And in this world, humans are not counted amongst the fittest, and are trated as such (Very much like in modern day comics with mutants). The unfortunate thing is that the series covers a few days in each book, over a period of twelve years. It gives us only a glimps into Cable's life. Oh well, The Askani Son series picked up the pieces there!

5 out of 5 stars An X-cellent work! Clears away lots of gray areas........1998-12-05

This graphic novel compiles the mini-series with the same title. It is very good reading and helps to clear away the grey (no pun intended) areas relating to cable's background in particular. All in all an X-cellent book. Excelcior!

5 out of 5 stars So, you began to hate Sinister after reading X-men..........2005-12-21

...but this book explains how Sinister became what he is , and describes a Frankensteinish scientist who crossed the line out of care for his family. Apocalypse also appears, and Jean and Scott too.

The art suits story perfectly, and although this book is not better than Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, in my opinion, it is something completely different and well-written. The level of the script is Gaiman-ish.

          3 out of 5 stars Mr. Sinister's origin.......2005-06-11

The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix takes place in 1859 and retells the origin of Mister Sinister. He begins the tale as Nathaniel Essex, brilliant but misunderstood scientist who, in the age of creationism believes in evolution. Even Darwin thinks Essex insane. Driven by the death of the deformed son he was unable to save, and fear for the unborn child his wife is carrying he is soon pushing past morality into monstrosity.

When a band of thugs Essex employs, named Marauders, set out to collect mutants they accidentally awaken Apocalypse. That's when Apocalypse begins the task of turning Essex into Sinister.

The dialogue is solid, the art is dark, heavy, and moody, which is perfect for the feeling of the book.

The bad news is the inclusion of Cyclops and Phoenix. Transported to the past by Sanctity, their presence feels forces, and could be excluded entirely. It feels like they were only added to boost sales.

The good and bad balance here to make this a readable, but not spectacular book. I recommend it for X-Men fans, but I do not recommend it for new comic book readers due to the messy continuity.

5 out of 5 stars A tragic tale of how Mister Sinister came to be.......2001-07-16

This is the tragic story about the origin of Sinister. Scott Summers and Jean Grey are brought back to the Victorian age. It was when Sinister was still known as Nathaniel Essex: A brilliant scientist, who was way too obsessed with reaching his goal: Creating the perfect species. He even puts his neglected wife aside in the name of science.

Other scientists slam his ideas and he only meets failure when trying to pursue his goal. But then he meets En Sabah Nur, also known as the evil mutant Apocalypse - Who tells him there is a way for him to do it. All Nathaniel has to do is choose between that or the love of his caring wife.

This is a very good story about love, the difficult choice this man had to make and how he came to the decision he eventually made. After years and years of hating Mister Sinister for everything he's done to the X-Men... You find that he's had a heart once. And I couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for the guy. They did Sinister good with this story. The writing is great. The thoughts, emotions and distant relationship between Nathaniel Essex and his wife Rebecca are done marvellously. The events can be shocking at times (don't ever browse through a comic book quickly!!!)

The art is very dark and contains alot of shadows - which works very well for this setting and story. It sets the mood for the story just right. Some might take a while to get used to the style, but that happens pretty quick once you get deep into the book.

If you've loved the love story of "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm", I'd recommend this. I would probably be sorry for saying this, but... It made me shed a tear :o)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent 4 part series all wrapped into one........2000-08-17

Overall this is a good story, interesting plot.. and of course features the coolest enemy of them all (IMHO) Apocalypse! Seems he's at the root of just about everything in the x-universe these days eh?

Excellent artwork and a great read. I highly recommend it to the Apocalypse fan .

2 out of 5 stars The Night the Heads Came.......2005-04-13

The book, The Nights the Heads Came, written by William Slator, is a science-fictional thriller about a boy named Leo who encounters some creepy incidents. It wasn't the best I have ever read but it was O.K... I think that this novel is more for the younger kids who are more into the alien-type stuff, which I am obviously not. Leo has to deal with a lot of stuff while his friend Tim is missing from what seems to be, alien abduction. He has to go through tough therapy which I could probably never do in my lifetime. Leo reacts unconcernedly but horrified, and the ending of this is horrific. All in all I would recommend this book to a sixth-grader who likes science-fiction; it gets two out of five stars on my scale.

4 out of 5 stars An awsome book.......2002-03-21

The Night the Heads Came is a pretty good book if you like sci-fi with aliens and heads in them. A sixteen year old boy named Tim was driving in his car with his best friend Leo. They woke up the next day thinking that aliens or the heads attacked them. The following day Tim's dad took them to a psychiatrist because Leo and Tim didn't no what happened. They told the psychiatrist about the heads but he didn't believe them, he said the aliens put a false memory in their heads hoping that none would find out about it. Tim told Dr.Viridain about a dream or what he thought happened before he was abducted. He said aliens brought him up into there space shuttle so he could save the world.

A few days later the aliens where back for Tim and Leo. Leo called another doctor about people getting abducted by aliens and she made an appointment for him. That night after the appointment he was driving home and lost control over the steering wheel, the aliens were controlling it. He started speeding a little faster until he saw Tim on the side of the road with a portfolio of drawings in it. Leo pressed on the brake and stopped Tim jumped in and hung on. I asked him what's going on and he said, "they like my drawing". As they went home there parents where there waiting for Tim because they where really worried. That night the aliens and heads sorrounded the house wanting Tim and his drawings. Leo said not to go out of the house because they wanted u to take over the world like the others. You'll have to read it to find out what happens to Tim and his drawings!

5 out of 5 stars The Night The Heads Came.......2000-02-18

This book is the best I have read for a while if not ever. Tim and Leo are good characters, they are fun to read about, and Sleator describes them very well. As Leo and Tim are going to New York to show some people Tim's drawings they both get abducted, but only Leo returns, and he has to deal with the police and Tims father and everything else, but then suddenl Tim returns, but he his older and thinner. What happened? Read the book to find out.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not one of Sleator's best.......1999-12-22

Leo is driving his friend Tim to New York, where Tim has an appointment with a publisher who is interested in Tim's drawings, when the two are seized by strange, dirty aliens who take their blood. Leo awakes with no memory of what happened, and there is no trace of his friend Tim. His story of what happened--"I don't remember"--sounds like a more than ordinarly pathetic excuse, until a psychiatrist begins working on him to recover memories. Strangely, those memories are not of what really happened....This book lacks Sleator's usual carefully structured plot--it just flows along, helter-skelter. Also lacking is strong characterization and the tensions between humans that Sleator usually works in as a sub-plot, and that's quite a loss. But it's a good, fast-paced read, with a eyebrow-raising twist at the end.

Dr. McDougall's change of food has helped me a great deal. I was having trouble with high sugar, triglycerides, etc and now am having trouble with iron in my blood. Eating no meat, dairy, white bread, white rice has brought all down and I am not hungry. It is filling and his books give me ideas for new recipes.

The great thing about a McDougall recipe is the spice blends. Mary McDougall really knows how to put spices together to make things delicious. I highly recommend this and other McDougall books.

we happened across the mcdougall program through anthony robbins.we were total dairy and meat addicts and believed that it was really good to eat lots of it.however ,we did a 10 day challenge and cut it all out ,and have never looked back....blood pressure dropped, weight dropped, muscle tone and energy increased.we now have perfect skin and the whites of our eyes are now perfectly clean....so we are hooked...don't worry...he does say you can have a "feast food" on a special occassion, so you aren't going to have to never have your favorites..but you will discover an efficient well body that you never realised you had!. book is great...

                    2 out of 5 stars I was very disappointed.......2006-12-08

I have to say with this book. While it seems like everyone else here thought it was wonderful, for me it offered very little pet advice and tons on showing and competition. I was looking for a book on how to raise a shih tzu as a pet and I have zero interest in breeding or showing, which are the groups for whom this book seems to have been written. If that's your goal then I wholely recommend it (which is why I gave the two stars rather than one), but if you're like me and the 98% of shih tzu owners who are looking for a pet based book, there are many better ones out there (for much less money, might I add!).

Excellent resource for the Shih Tzu fancier and prospective owners. Relates everything from their orgin, care, grooming, how to "tie" a top knot, whelping, agility, etc. etc. Cannot recommend enough. Great book.

This book covers everything about the shih tzu standard. It gives detailed pictures on all the aspects of the shih tzu. this book is 5x bigger then any other shih tzu book. this bok is a must if you are getting a shih tzu or show dog.

Very informative about the origins and showing of the shih tzu. I would have liked more in depth information on breeding but otherwise very good book with nice laminated pages and 100's of photos all in color. Overall very pleased with this book and would recommend highly.

                      Book Description

Little is known in regard to authentic London furniture and looking glasses because of scarcities that are striking in comparison with the productions of other large cities in Europe and the British Isles. Of continental cities only Paris was larger during the Georgian era, while Dublin ranked next in size. It has long been the view of F.Lewis Hinckley that a thorough knowledge of Dublin furniture designs is a must in order to understand the source of a great many of the highly sophisticated metropolitan pieces currently found in British and American museums that carry London attributions. Clearly the volume outstrips what known London cabinetmakers could have turned out, while the English hinterland has yet to yield the names of artisans who could have worked at such high levels of design and execution.
For collectors of Americana, a knowledge of Dublin designs is highly desirable both for recognizing their influence on the development of American furniture, and for evaluating any Dublin pieces that reach the market mislabeled as American productions.

I borrowed this book from a woman in our quilting club and didn't want to give it back. :) Just had to have a copy for myself. I've been quilting for nearly 20 years but still love to find books with "shortcuts". These aren't "overnight" quilts...but still "put together" quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Traditional and appealing to beginners.......2001-05-27

First, do NOT be misled by the word Time-Crunch in the title. These are not quickie, one day projects. The 20 projects in this book are traditional blocks, many with features like lots of little triangles in the Bear's Paw block. Nancy provides you with her tips for doing things in the quickest, most time-efficient way. This includes using strips to make bias squares instead of individual half square triangles. She also gives hints on how to make a few blocks do the work of many, such as setting them on point or using wider, more interesting sashing strips. She includes quilting designs for all the projects, which is a really nice substitute for the normal "quilt as desired." The blocks are billed as being "updated, with a fresh new look." I must have missed that part. These are not only completely traditional but often use fabrics that show no contrast between the areas so that your block design all but disappears. If you can look past her fabric choices, there are some interesting layouts and ideas.

5 out of 5 stars This book is no accident!.......2000-05-08

I ordered this book before it was available because I saw it advertised on Nancy Martin's page and I'm always looking for quilting shortcuts. Usually a book like this has sidebars on time management rather than actual time saving techniques--so I was totally stunned with the original twist to this book! Also, I don't like to copy exact patterns from books--I like to design my own--but Nancy included so many compelling patterns--that I'm going to make some of them! Sawtooth Mountains is exquisite! My only fear is that every quilter will make this quilt and they will be everywhere! Sew and Sew is wonderful with three pieced sewing machines. I've got to make it for my sewing room! Tea Party, Three Little Pumpkins, and Quilts In the Attic are on my list too! I love the button quilting! And since I'm new to quilting--obvious tips like turn the square on point and add side triangles to make a bigger block--are sweet music to my ears. The directions are clear and the color plates are awesome! Loved the CD--its clear and focused and shows all the time saving tips close up. Thank you Nancy for such a terrific book.

I am a novice quilter and purchased Nancy Martins book of Time Crunch Quilts for help in rotary cutting. The book is a gold mine of information including blocks, sashing, bias cutting, nine patch blocks. The section on Bias squares was the best in the book. The c. d. that is included in the book shows first hand how to do the short cuts that are included in the book. I feel it is a must have for all new and experienced quilters. Virginia H.Casey

                            Book Description

Passionate, fierce, and lyrical, Meena Alexander's memoir traces her evolution as a postcolonial writer from a privileged childhood in India to a turbulent adolescence in the Sudan and then to England and New York City. In this tenth-anniversary edition of Fault Lines, this Alexander challenges the assumptions of life as a South Asian American woman writer in a post-9-11 world. With poetic insight and an honesty that will galvanize readers-both familiar and new-Alexander reveals her difficult recovery from a long-buried childhood trauma that revolutionizes the entire landscape of her memory: of her family, of her writing process and the meaning of memoir, and of her very self, now and before.

Meena Alexander is a poet and professor of English and creative writing at Hunter College and the City University of New York.

As a student and a poet, I was first introduced to Meena Alexander when I was reading an example of what to expect on an Ap test (in English). I started to actually pay attention and read throught the diction and syntax to see what lay beneath, and what I say was magnificent. This book is a collectors piece for psychologists and th ecommon person. After all, who has not asked "Who am I?" This book answers that question for Meena, and if you read it yourself, it may provide a simple answer as well. But don't count on it, for Fault Lines shows us the confliction through conflicting images an example of Humanity itself.

                              Book Description

In 1969 Kim Janik was a young man shining with promise—handsome, brilliant, studying at Harvard on a physics scholarship—and he was in love with Laurie Alberts, a troubled teenager from a wealthy Boston suburb. Twenty-five years later, when Kim’s naked and decomposing body was discovered on the Wyoming prairie, one photograph—that of the Harvard junior and the seventeen-year-old—was found in his abandoned car. This book is Alberts’s attempt to piece together what happened in between. An accomplished novelist, Alberts brings to her task the searching intelligence, clear-eyed candor, and narrative grace that have marked her previous books. She painstakingly recreates her turbulent relationship with Kim and traces the twisted course that led to his eventual ruin.

A story of obsessive love, societal upheaval, and the warring impulses of survival and self-destruction, Fault Line moves beyond the limits of the traditional memoir into the realms of biography and literary journalism. With interviews and letters, Alberts augments her lucid reflections in an effort to comprehend Kim’s life and death and her place in both. The result is a singular work that melds the inner and outer worlds with a seamless intensity.
