Book Description
She's the goddess of hearth and home, America's millionaire media maven of domesticity, Connecticut's most dazzling hostess, and everything in her world is perfect-except that Maggie Darling's picture-book life has suddenly gone off the rails. Amid the extravagant trappings of a Christmas Eve bash, she spies her swinish stockbroker husband slipping out of a powder room moments after his creamy young colleague. Matrimonial meltdown launches Maggie on a year of romance and misadventure, starting with an ill-fated fling with British rock star-turned-movie-actor Frederick Swann. Back home, a sniper is loose on the Merritt Parkway and a gang known as the Businessman's Lunch Posse is terrorizing patrons of Manhattan's four-star restaurants. Meanwhile, Maggie's son Hooper drops out of college and falls into the company of the sinister gangsta-rap group Chill Az Def. As calamity piles on catastrophe, can Maggie Darling brilliantly resolve the collapse of civilization as we wish we knew it?

Not enough action to keep me interested.......2007-07-10
This book was about a martha stewartesque character who is divorcing her husband and sleeping with lots of the "wrong" men. The book felt a little listless. I was constantly waiting for something to happen.
Captures this generation's gestalt.......2005-06-30
I love stories that give you the "feel" of the times. Think the movie "Ice Storm" (1970's) or "Do the right thing" (1980's). To me the characters and their story surrounding Maggie Darling reflect the essence of our current situation. Some of the early scenes with Maggie confronting the husband were fantastic. Maggie is the epitome of what is wrong, but then again is a strong person who despite the chaos, will survive...
This is a great book........2005-01-15
Very funny and very true. You should buy it. Buy it at your local, independent bookstore.
Modern-day Americana, comically written.......2004-07-06
That's right, Portland, Oregon. (See above.) Of course I'm going to like it.
The Amazon-review scandals of the past few months require full disclosure. So I'll come out: I think Kunstler's a goddam hero, Mencken+Orwell+Balzac, with a wicked eye for the puerile and a merciless pen aimed at everything venal and sinister in our car-encamped culture. I must think that--I live in the greatest--the only?--city in America, where our civic leaders have committed JHK's non-fiction to memory, chapter and verse, and even the Republicans (like me) adopt his aesthetic visions.
No, not the only city in America. New York, too. Even it, though, is imperiled by the vast expanse of plasticized waste parasitically feeding off the metropolitan core. (See: Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, etc.)
How did we get this way? That's the premise of Maggie Darling. How have we turned on ourselves so viciously, like those snakes that start gnawing at their own tailis?
Kunstler knows, and here he takes the reader on a narrative trek for answers, through a socially-supposed anti-hero, the Stewartesque Maggie Darling. A great choice on two levels. One, because while it's easy to lampoon Stewart, it's harder (and therefore worthier, for a writer) to find the redeemable in her empire. Two, because Stewart's pre-Imclone image--perfect timing on that, huh, James? How cruel the Gods are--depends precisely on that which our modern country disdains: standards. (Which goes a long way to explaining the horrible Martha backlash.)
It's not as if we've abandoned standards for decadence. No. Counterintuitively, our standardlessness pushes us in the other direction, toward a vaguely Protestant servile depravity. So enslaved are we to our Forman grills and Chevy Tahoes and hastily prefabbed pseud-Scandinavian furniture, we seize anything foreign to this lifestyle and, like beasts encountering alien objects, our instinct is to kill it. Functional downtown? Kill. Walkable neighborhood? Kill now. Homegrown produce? Kill, of course, Taco Bell is two exits down the highway.
Maggie's dedication to excellence and craft is a refreshing departure from the sneering, ironic, consumerist navel-gazers--both the characters and their authors--who dominate so much of the best-seller list. No wonder she's stunned by the brutish civilization that's grown to surround her.
Satisfying and entertaining.......2004-06-17
Don't be put off by a man writing from a woman's point of view -- this is one man who gets it right. And don't dismiss the premise (a Martha Stewart-esque character hitting the wall of personal crisis)as standard chic lit fare. Maggie Darling isn't a hyperventilating twenty-something but a fully-formed grown-up, and in between the sly send-ups and knowing glimpses of celebrity life the author presents her with the same real life issues the rest of us deal with. Although some of the plot devices are a bit creaky, Maggie's character easily outshines them, and the book pulls you effortlessly along.

Worst scifi I've ever read.......2005-01-18
A collection of stories about the famous Retief character, using the most unwieldly prose writing imaginable. If he eliminated all the `Swifties' (`ly' adverbs) from the book, it would probably only be twenty pages long. There isn't much substance there aside from the dialogue, which looks like this:
"Boy, it's hot out here," Retief said ARIDLY.
And, of course, the annoying "see issue #500" problem, as in the sections of dialogue that go like this:
He spoke to them in the tone of an Ambassador With A Severe Bowel Cramp (#2447-ed.)
Book Description
Sit down for a meal with the locals on six continents-what they eat may surprise you. Extreme Cuisine examines eating habits across the global neighborhood, showing once and for all that road kill for one culture is restaurant fare for another! From the foreword by Anthony Bourdain: 'I could not have written A Cook's Tour without this book. There is so much I would have missed. And experience has shown me that no matter how frightening a dish may look on the page, in front of you, on the table, with a proud host watching your first tasting-and the accompaniment of much local beverage, it's almost always worth the ride. For truly-how bad can it be?" 'So dig in. Enjoy. Eat without fear or prejudice, secure in the knowledge that millions of people have been enjoying this fare for centuries without ill effect. Get away from your hotel dining room-and the tourist terror domes and range wild and free. Eat. Eat adventurously. Miss nothing. It's all here in these pages."

Not for readers with delicate stomachs. .......2006-08-17
Fascinating reading! In my travels I thought I had seen a lot of strange culinary customs but after reading this book I realize that I had barely scratched the surface. Apparently every living creature on this planet is a delicacy somewhere.
Mannish Water ...a stew with sheep's head????.......2005-11-18
I don't think so! Traditionally this is made in Jamaica with the Goats' head, tripe and (if you are lucky ) the testes. It is considered a soup. It rarely uses the meat which is reserved for the following course of curry goat. In fact prior to making the soup the head is 'singed' to remove the hair easily, this results in the soup having a delightful smoky flavour. The head is then chopped into bite sized pieces and the soup is slow cooked (best done in an old "kerosene" pan on a traditional Jamaican coal pot outside).Wedding Feasts, breaking ground for a new house,or a funeral were all reasons to kill a goat and have a "goat Feast"
Jamaica has a sheep population which is very small ( most of the lamb consumed, is imported) but goats are commonly reared.
A delightful read however, the book does help the reader to appreciate the gastronomic diversity that exists even today and some of its'history.
Great Fun... with a Pinch of Salt.......2005-01-13
I'm enjoying this book, but some of it must be taken with a pinch of salt :-)
Some of the information is intended to gross the reader out, but I am sure it is all fact-checked nevertheless.
Extraordinary Taste and Flavor.......2004-09-12
Jerry Hopkins has raised the bar in food scholarship - Extreme Cuisine is an extremely entertaining read and a primary source for anyone interested in how (with recipes) and what other (often rural) world cultures eat. A most worthy successor to Unmentionable Cuisine. Great color photography inserts. Hopkins provides scholarly detail about some subjects some pet-lovers might find less tasty (eating dogs, cats, horse, monkeys, etc), some which are most assuredly unknown by most (eating rooster combs, wattles & testicles) and has a good sense of humor by including dumpster diving and eating roadkill. As Anthony Bourain learned, Hopkins is the perfect guide, the "Old Hand" to the other (than American style packaged foods) food worlds. A must buy for any serious culinary library.

A Howell Dog Book of Distinction
Customer Reviews:
A little behind in modern training techniques.......2005-04-01
With years of experience in training working dogs, I have decided to try Agility for a break in the routine! I thought this book would be good, but, alas, it is way behind in training techniques. I was quite put off by the mis-information, and in some cases, harmful information given. Very dissapointing. The author probably does have great depth of knowledge on the subject, but needs to attend a few up to date classes in dog communication, Operant Conditioning, or training in drive (all quite simular in application) and then re-write the book.
Basic introductory book, for the novice with high goals.......2003-10-23
As a beginner I found this book VERY helpful. It is excellently written in a down-to-earth manner, with tips and hints for the greenest of dog/handler teams. It covers all of the basics such as what your dog should know BEFORE you train agility, how to train obstacles, basic right/left-hand turns, and even goes on into obstacle "proofing" and a few more intermediate level topics. As always, Jane Simmons-Moake made sure that you can't fail by putting in tips on "what to do if your dog..." and a very helpful obstacle-building section which is especially nice for those who have high goals. It is an essential book for any agility lover, especially those looking for an introduction to the most fun thing you can do with your canine pal!
Quite good, and also a good reference.......2002-06-22
I wanted to get my dog into agility (an unfortunate accident prevented that). But, this was a good book for both reference and training in the sport. I'm still hoping to get a dog involved in agility. When I do, I'll use this book
Perfect for the Agility Lover.......2002-04-27
This book contains good information for both the beginner and the experienced competitor. It explains the obstacles well (it even shows you how to make professional obstacle yourself!) and covers everything from the organizations to the competitions. It also included (which I found fun) some examples of courses and sequences to practice with. The only flaw I found was that it was a bit dated, like using wood instead of PVC and street addresses to the organizations, but no emails or web sites. Awesome book overall, though.
For beginners only.......2000-09-12
This book certainly offers a good jump start for beginners but if you're beyond the introductory level there's not much you can learn here. The focus is very much on teaching your dog how to navigate obstacles but there's little on advanced handling techniques and how to practice them.
The section on building your own equipment looks quite good but for people like me who can hardly handle a hammer it's probably better (and less nerve wrecking) to simply shell out the money and order ready-to-use equipment.

A waste.......2003-10-11
I thought this would be a book I couldn't live without. Thankfully, I didn't pay a lot for it, but I NEVER refer to it. Yes, it's got nice big pix of the usual trays, but the vast majority of CC trays?...you won't find 'em here. Precious little content, unlike the other CC trays book out there, which blows this one out of the water.
If you can pick this one up for a handful of dollars or less, buy it. But don't expect much for your money.

Book Description
Andrea King Collier has used her mother's valiant but losing battle with ovarian cancer to write an honest, funny, empowering book that has relevance to anybody, anywhere, who has loved and lost a parent. And with it, she also deliberately breaks new ground in the African-American community by openly discussing cancer and terminal illness.
On Andrea's ninth wedding anniversary, her mother called and said simply, "They think I have cancer." A year later, nearly to the day, her mother died. In the intervening twelve months, Andrea took on the enormous role of caregiver and principal support system while juggling the needs of her own children and husband. She became both a clearinghouse for cancer information and her mother's chief advocate regarding her medical care, but she never stopped being the daughter of an outspoken, independent woman who insisted on confronting her illness on her own terms. She soon found out that all the stuff that mothers and daughters carry around for years doesn't just disappear because cancer shows up.
Andrea Collier's voice is that of a best friend who shares the frustrations, anger, and setbacks of a family dealing with a terminal illness. And she candidly describes how both she and her mother were sustained and transformed by their mutual love and devotion.
Whether navigating the maze of diagnosis, treatment, and quality of care, or finding joy in the everyday dramas of being a mommy to two little children or searching for ways to go back to "normal" after the loss of a loved one, Collier writes with honesty, humor, and hope. Still with Me is a love letter to all mothers and daughters.
Customer Reviews:
A strong two thumbs up.......2003-05-07
Still with Me is a wonderful read, beautifully written and warmly delivered. It is universal in its message and will touch anyone who has lost a parent. I began reading the book in a restaurant as I dined alone; but became somewhat self-conscious as I cried almost as many times as I laughed, and sometimes that happened on the same page. This book promises to be not only a best seller but would make a splendid movie.
Still With Me.......2003-04-19
I felt as though I was in the same room with Andrea King Collier listening to her tell this story. It is a true account of the roller coaster of emotions that accompany caring for an ill parent. The book demonstrates the importance of preventative health care and the reasons to advocate for one's own health. It is fortunate that Andrea had the support of her husband, the distraction of two young children, the strength to care for her mother, and a sense of humor to help make it through even the darkest of days. This book is a tribute and an inspiration to all women.
Still With Me - a must read!.......2003-04-15
I was so moved and so utterly totally shaken by this book that I have been crying though the reading, my nose running and my chest tight. Now I am just raw with my grief. This book isn't so much about Ms Collier's mother as it is about all our mothers.
I am one of those daughter's who has taken on the care of an elderly parent. My mother is still living and I have been her "assisted care" for several years. In the years since my mother suffered a debillitating stroke I have struggled with the varying feelings of helplessness, inadequacy, andger, resentment - all of those and more.
This book is a gift to all of the daughters, all of the caregivers. It gave me permission to cry, to let it all out.
Beyond a clearly superior ability to write - the author posesses an indefinable quality that allows her to dip into universal truths and make them personal and immediate. "Unflinching" as one review characterizes it, does not even come close.
The Ultimate Love Story.......2003-04-05
"Still With Me" is a story of love, life, illness, loss and healing. It is an emotional journey that made me smile, laugh out loud, talk back to the book, and shed a few tears as I read.
This is a well-rounded look at how an illness affects the entire family, not just those closest to it. The depth of the love between the author and her mother is so clear in this story. The importance of annual exams and taking full advantage of access to medical care could be considered the moral of this story.
As a mother, I pray that my daughter will not have to face this experience; as a daughter, I pray that if I am faced with this, I will handle it with in such a loving and caring manner. This is a "must read" for anyone interested in health issues, dealing with a terminal illness, or just an old-fashioned story of the special bond shared between mothers and daughters.
I look forward to future work by this author as her style of writing allows the reader to visualize the setting and the story will tug at your heart and beg you finish it. This is not "light reading", more a story with a message of love. It was wonderful!
