A must read, with reservations..........2007-07-28
I purchased this book because the Handless Maiden myth resonates for me, my having first been introduced to it through a dream and then through Clarissa Pinkola Estes book 'Women Who Run With Wolves'. I felt I had more to learn from this myth, and Johnson's book put the Handless Maiden myth in a matrix that helped me to understand it more personally, as a metaphor for the feminine in contemporary society. Placing it in a context I could understand so well brought this myth to life, and was the greatest value of this book for me.
The only off-putting thing, which changed it from 5 to 4 stars, is a small thing but which strikes to the heart of the issue. The author apologised in the beginning for perhaps not being able to do justice to the feminine wounding myth as much as the male myth. It was honest and ethical of him to state such concerns, which makes me respect his integrity, but he is alas, correct. As wonderful as his assessment of the Handless Maiden is, he still put a great deal of emphasis on the male value and aspects of it, which he did very little in reverse for the male Fisher King myth. The section in The Handless Maiden where he abandons such careful integrating of the masculine is the section which resonated most for me. I'm not sure why he did this, but if one goes through both chapters and counts instances of other-gender applicability you'll see what I mean. In one paragraph I almost felt like this myth was being ripped from my "hands" and given to the male, a dynamic of the actual myth.
Nevertheless, the author put the myth into a powerful and broad matrix of understanding for contemporary women, something which 'Women Who Run With Wolves', as much as I love it, didn't allow me to see as clearly. What I would suggest is first reading Johnson's book, and saving Clarissa Pinkola Estes interpretation for last, when you can appreciate it more, in all its profound and subtle complexity.

Healing the wounded feeling function.......2000-09-24
"This book is about our wounded feeling function, probably the most common and painful wound which occurs in our Western world. It is very dangerous when a wound is so common in culture that hardly anyone knows there is a problem." Johnson opens his book with these provocative sentences. The first thing he does is convince the reader that the problem exists, and is of considerable scope. For example, our modern English language is not really adequate for a full description of the problem, having the vague and much abused word "feeling" and only one word, equally vague, for "love". Johnson, a Jungian analyst, explores the problem using myths -- the Fisher King and the Handless Maiden, to demonstrate the wounded feeling function in, respectively, masculinity and femininity. Through the myths, Johnson not only diagnoses the problem, but makes practical suggestions for healing. This wonderful little book, scarcely 100 pages long, can be read in an afternoon, although its insights could change the directions of a life.

Gods and Blood Spells.......2004-08-06
The third volume in this series resumes the story of vampires Regina Blake and Victoria Ash as the scene shifts from Paris to Vienna. In that city is the secret master chantry of the Tremere, the blood wizards of the Masquerade. It is into Vienna that Anton Wellig has brought Regina's mother, Emma, to enlist the support of his peers in an ornate plot aimed at ending the unlife of Mithras, the demon prince of London. Welligs initial attempts on Mithras failed, but damaged the master vampire in such a way that the turmoil in his mind is reflected in the city's streets.
Lord Blake, Emma's husband before her own change, also comes to Vienna to try to release his wife. But he is not as cautious as he should have been in choosing his friends, and the attempted rescue triggers another round of disastrous consequences. Beckett manages to rescue Emma from immediate danger, but there are countless other bumps in the road as the various players are drawn back to England for the final phases of this long drama.
Phillipe Boulle again manages to avoid the trap many Masquerade authors fall into - that of getting so mired in the details and politics of Vampire life that their tales read more like museum exhibits than they do vampire fiction. While this volume bogs down a bit as Boulle fleshes it out with some collateral stories, it never drags to the point that the reader's attention wanders. And for the most part, his sub-stories flesh out his characters or expand on current events.
The primary focus of the story is the people who move through it. In particular Regina Blake, who comes to age as a vampire. She presents the aspect of a woman who is made with now warning or willingness, goes through the crises of the changing experience and, eventually makes her peace with her new 'life.' For all the glamour that vampires have, Boulle effectively cuts through the pretty picture and opens many of the interior moments of a vampire's life. Even while presenting an absorbing tale of the battle for power among some of the darkest segments of the world of night.
Victorian Ending.......2004-04-29
This book was a great ending to the trilogy that was Victorian Age Vampire. I could not put these books down, least of all this one, and I was so sad to see it all end.
Superb wrap up of the series........2004-03-07
When I finish a good book I sigh, think about it, and look forward to the next one by that author. However, when I finish a trilogy, knowing that I have reached the end of a journey never to be taken for the first time again, I miss the book that will never be. So, about halfway through I start reading slower, even when I am entranced -- to make the journey last as long as possible.
The Wounded King by Philippe Boulle is the final in The Victorian Age of Vampires. I don't want the series to end. I know the people, for they are not just characters to me. I want to continue to peek in on their lives, or half-life of a vampire. I want the sensational trip to continue.
Philippe Boulle is not just the writer, but he is an editor and publisher at White Wolf Publishing. The books he publishes have never compromised his ethics. Each is a unique trip. He is, however, my favorite writer for White Wolf. I want more novels about these amazing people: some I love, some I understand while some I do not, and some I dislike. Each emotion tells me that my life has changed in knowing them.
I followed Lady Regina Blake, the heroine, beginning with The Morbid Initiation, through The Madness of Priests and into the conclusion and wrap up in The Wounded King. My reviews of his first two novels are also available here.
This series is a "coming of age" of a young Victoria Lady whose mother just happens to be the vessel for the return of ancient power. Regina loves, years for more, suffers the loss of her family and lovers, and disappears into London's night society. She journeys through a daylight into darkness world with Victoria Ash, her protector.
The power of Boulle's writing is this: believability is interwoven in the plot, characters, actions, and consistency of the series. I cannot recommend this book without the first two -- and I found this is a trip worth taking. Those who love vampire fiction will be satiated, history buffs will see the details of each scene and set the time and place by them. This is a good time for all.
I give it five stars.

Anything done by white-wolf publishing is an amazing foray into the darkest parts of the human mind. They tell stories, not just write books. (there is a difference) and it is a unique spin on the traditional tales of Vampires. If you think you know Vampires...think again. Foget evreything you know.

Healing the Wounded King.......2000-07-30
I found this a thought-provoking book which suggests a deep awareness by the author of modern psychology and the way that psychological issues can be addressed by using traditionally occult or mystical approaches. In the book, John Matthews describes the Grail legends in an allegorical context, and takes the reader through a series of self-healing 'Path-Workings', which would be instantly recognised by students of the Western Esoteric Tradition (particularly those familiar with tecniques developed within the Golden Dawn tradition).
While not a book about occultism or mysticism, 'Healing the Wounded King' contains elements of both and combines them into a wonderfully accessible approach to self-healing. A very good read and extremely worthwhile.

Savagely Good!.......2001-05-22
This is one of the more exciting of the Deathlands novels because it starts edging into the Outlanders universe. It is hoped that the Deathlands characters can meet the Outlanders bunch at some nexus in/at some future space-time, perhaps via a chronos-jump....
I liked this installment primarily because of where I think it is heading -- towards Outlanders!
HIGH SEAS ADVENTURE DEATHLANDS STYLE!.......2001-02-08
This new Deathlands trilogy starts with a bang! The SKYDARK CHRONICLES reads like a old-fashioned pirate movie and fits so perfectly in this post-holocaust world that the book moves along like a speeding bullet, with action scenes so colorful and well done that the spectacular sea wars are like that straight out of a well-made movie. This robust novel full of new and interesting people, (both good and bad), is so refreshing it leaves you wanting more! The ending was so breathtaking and cliffhangar-like, it left me breathing hard from exertion. If Deathlands fans aren't happy with this one - then I don't know what will. The caliber of writing style recently has been on a real good roll if you ask me, and I have been a fan since day 1 back in June of '86. The characters of Ryan and company are kept well intact and the numerous new characters are fresh and well written. The storyline is bold and very exciting with a new twist on mutant people. I love a storyline where all the characters share the stage and its not just all Ryan doing all the stunts. Whoever wrote this one should be commended (and paid more),because its taking a Deathlands novel in uncharted waters and making it fun and extremely enjoyable to read from the 1st page to the last! Enjoy this one folks.

As a Southerner exiled to the frozen tundra of Wisconsin, John Egerton's SOUTHERN FOOD has been food for the soul. And no matter where you are from, this book offers fascinating historical and cultural information about Southern food and many, many wonderful recipes. I have learned as much about Southern cooking in Wisconsin as I did in all my years back home, all because of this wonderful book. It's charming and often lyrical, immensely well-informed, and points the way to both restaurants and recipes. The barbecue instructions have been a lifesaver. I have bought five or six copies of this book--one because I wore out the first copy, and the others because it makes a great gift for practically anyone.

This is a wonderful book about eating in the South, eating out and eating in, about a whole host of things like family and fellowship that gather around any groaning board in the south, and what you want to eat where and what the people who live there eat, how to cook it and where you're likely to find it at a reasonable price made by food-loving hands. John Egerton clearly ate his way across the south to write this book, and he was careful to stay well off the beaten path. It's anthropology, sociology, recipes, culture and good humor, from the North Carolina mountains to the swamps of Cajun country. This book will make your mouth water and your belly growl, but most of all it's a fine read.

Buck invites us on a journey of his life that is less than perfect and yet terribly intriguing. His honesty is refreshing and his story is not tainted by the misgivings of others. This book demonstrates his desire to overcome a difficult childhood, his love of horses, and his compassion for all. He is certainly not a "Hollywood cowboy," though his skills have brought him into unintended notoriety. Inspiring for all horse lovers.

The faraway Horses is what the author's young daughter refered to when she spoke of her father's job that took him away so often. As a horselover, trainer, teacher etc.. the term rang true to how faraway we can get, horse and equine alike, from where we want and need to be. Buck Brannaman's stories are introspective and beautifully told. A powerful book moving and beautiful.
Buck's way has changed my life. .......2006-07-06
Like many others, I recently jumped on the "natural horsemanship" bandwagon. I grew up riding horses, but after an 11-year hiatus I finally was able to have a horse of my own again-- and found that I had gaping holes in my knowledge and understanding. In my search for enlightenment I tried on Parelli, Clinton Anderson and others. I invested a lot of time, money, sweat and tears, but was ultimately disappointed with what they had to offer. They each do have something good to offer, but they don't have the whole picture. Buck's work has honestly changed my life. It has changed my perspective so entirely, and changed how I react and interact with people as well as horses. I can not come close to doing justice to Buck's way in one paragraph. Please read this book, and Buck's other book "Believe." While you're at it, read Tom Dorrance's book "True Unity" and anything by Ray Hunt (both were Buck's teachers). You won't see Buck on TV very often, clothes and tack emblazoned by sponsors like the other "clinicians." Buck is just out there for the horse.

A feel-good book, but also interesting and informative in a folksy kind of way. I'm a horse person, but I think non-horse people would get just as much out if this. It's about how you should deal with life as much as about how you should deal with horses.

Wow! So many patterns!.......2006-11-14
I had no idea how many types of Early American Pattern Glass there were. This book has a section on history, manufacturers and reproductions as well as listings with drawings of glassware in this category. Like the previous reviewer, I felt photos would have been better than drawings because the drawings are too small to pick out details to help identify specific patterns easily. Maybe a combination of drawings with photos would be nice, however, I am sure finding examples of all the glassware could be rather difficult! Many of us see older glassware and think "Grandma had that", never realizing that Grandma's grandmother actually had it first! This book would be an excellent addition to a reference library on Early American Pattern Glass, but definitely don't use it exclusively to identify glassware of this type.

This book was organized in a very concise easy-to-use fashion, giving manufactuers' and other pattern names for each design illustrated. The only drawback that I found with this book was the fact that the illustrations were not always as accurate as a photograph would have been.

This book is the worst. The drawings are so POORLY detailed you cant make out the pattern. Dont waste your money, get either McCain's or Metz's glass books. This is a really, really poorly done book, I would rate this a negative 10 stars!

There are 224 pages with 39 full color photos and nearly 500 clear black and white diagrams to assist in identifying pattern glass. As early as the 1960s, Nancy Spero's work was breaking ranks with the establishment. Her unique pictorial vocabulary and insistent political engagement was a far cry--and a loud cry--from the styles of abstraction that dominated the American art world at that time. She articulated and has continued to drive at themes of burning interest to her: protest against the Vietnam War, the alienation of society and violence against women, for example against Jewish woman under National Socialism and in the historical contexts of witch hunts. A Continuous Present pairs her War Series (1966-70), a cycle of anti-Vietnam War gouaches, with an overview of her work from the last decade. Between 1992 and 2001, Spero created infinite-seeming works on long horizontal and vertical bands of paper--a format borrowed from Egyptian papyrus rolls, Chinese scroll painting and antique friezes--populating them with female figures taken from mythology, various epochs and diverse cultures, giving them feminist momentum via highly charged or parodistic confrontations.

The book explores thematic connections in their work – the female body, myth and fantasy, the “decorative” – and situates them in the context of post-War American art and social movements, as well as feminist and cultural theory.Now in her mid-seventies, Nancy Spero is a respected feminist artist whose practice has greatly influenced a younger generation. Her work on paper and her installations are an acknowledgement of the power of the carnivalesque, and an exploration of the potential recoding of space and architecture through a visual poetics of word and image. Never abandoning the figure, even at a time when images of women were thought to carry only negative connotations, Spero has systematically refigured the feminine as collective, social and empowered.Coming from the generation of artists immediately following Spero, Kiki Smith has always acknowledged a liberating impulse in her art. Both artists have turned vulnerability into strength, making art that represents the female body, but in forms that avoid objectification or narcissism, and that can speak to the universal without idealization or reduction. a wonderful example how things come to be when you humble yourself and engage in the spirit of selflessness.The way the subject expresses himself of his experinces and the dramatic confrontations he was part of.Rueben throws light on the true nature and energy of a given circumstance.Withholding ego ,rationality he exudes clarity.

What is dangerous for some people can be sacred and useful for the others who can utilize that and we should respect those. Jay Fikes' book proved this true for me for peyote, a sacred cactus for Native Americans and pschedelic drug for others who do not know how to use it.
Moreover, I was deeply impressed with the Native American character Reuben Snake. This brave, compassionate man inspired me about how to live in harmony with the nature, the world and all that dwell theron. He showed me that the obstacles are in our minds and if we overcome these there will be no obstacles at all.
This book also helps many realize "Being Indian is being a human being and human beings deserve respect for what they believe, for their religions, cultures, etc."
Jay Fikes had done a wonderful job by introducing this humble serpent to our lives.
