I have taken several months to finally finish It Took Heroes. I was a young man during Vietnam and although I didn't serve in the war the memories of fresh faced boys, my brothers barely able to shave going off to the war, the dying, the sense of the surreal as at home we surfed and went to Disneyland during this time of sex, drugs, rock and roll -- all of it came to the surface, and I hurt again. I could only read a few pages at a time as I was taken to the time a place through the skillful memoir of Chaplain Newby. I saw the faces of the soldiers through Chaplain Newby's eyes, and I saw the heart of a man torn between duty to family and duty to men who a country asked to fight and die in an unwinable and ill-defined cause. Newby went to the war not once, but twice, and didn't have to go daily to the front lines where the fighting and dying was happening, but did. He evokes a sense of reverence for men, though not perfect, who did a dirty job and through it all did it just to get home, just to save a comrade, just because they had to. Newby is on a mission here to do justice to the memory of the dead and living who were boys once in a land far from "the world" and whose innocence was taken from them in a brutal conflict that still haunts us today. The Chaplain's point of view is what makes great movie stuff.

Well reasearched, well written, a must read for anyone who really wants to know what it was like to be an infantryman in Vietnam. It is a straight-forward story - not sugar-coated. Chaplian Newby is to be commended for the time and effort that he has put into his books to insure he has the story as accurate as possible.

Nice job. Brings back a lot of memories ... names, faces and places. You forgot noone when you were with us (A/2/8 Cav). You reached out to everyone. Both books tell the real story of how we survived.

This book will be studied a hundred years from now as the only one of its kind: A day by day vivid accounting of an Army Chaplain's life with infantry soldiers in almost constant combat in Viet Nam. Newby is only the 2d Chaplain in history to be awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge. All soldiers, especially those who served in the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam, must read this stunning work.

                      5 out of 5 stars Super Book.......2001-01-03

I have read this book and the sequel. If I could read only one Vietnam book, this is it. Richly detailed and faces and names and experiences permeate every page. Few people have any real concept of what chaplains do in combat or the fact that chaplains even exist. In Vietnam as related by the author, the Chaplain was ubiquitous. And, the soldiers who experienced his presence saw the face of God. Read this book and give it to your loved ones and friends. Sit it on your coffee table and leaf through it with much regularity. Thanks to Chaplain Newby for his great efforts. He truly is himself a hero.

Eleven years later, Alice has matured into a young woman and, having left behind the memories of her childhood, returns to her old home during college break. There, she finds herself drawn back into her past, and into the arms of the one who waited...

This books is a ridiculiously well written stroll of horror, romance, and suspense. The most important part of this book in my opinon were the characters and how one could truely feel attached to them. I can't reccomend this read any higher and your doing yourself a diservice if you're not ordering this book ;).

                      Wonderful from start to finish.

I got this book at the age of 13 when it was first released. Since then, I have found a second copy at a used book store and have kept both copies in my home ever since. These days, I read them aloud to my children.

While I was one of the many kids who loved the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books as a child, this book was the rare title that followed the same formula and bettered it so much that it alone was enough to make you want to toss all the others into the garbage. Sadly, it was the only one of the "Endless Quest" books that was this good, but the one good one was a powerhouse.

As the young wizard apprentice Jaimie, you and your two best friends, a talking fox and a talking owl (simply named Fox and Owl) have come with wizard Pentegarn to settle a problem with the three wizards currently ruling in the now-tattered rainbow castle. But you have been tricked, so while Pentergarn fights for his life you, Fox and Owl have been sent to another area entirely. It's up to you to get back to Pentegarn and help him.

Rose Estes is a natural for this sort of storytelling. She has a strong, mature style in her manner and handles the layout of the entire book with lots of intelligent planning, yet keeps the slightest suggestion of a child's fairy tale present just enough to keep it lighthearted (she eases the dark mystery of the cloud castle's tempting table by presenting its food and drink as "cookies, cakes, ice cream and candy", for example). And there are some genuinely humorous moments both clever and refreshingly original for this sort of book, such as the antics of Fox and Owl in the enchanted library. And Harry Quinn's illustrations are among the best I've seen in fantasy literature.

If you stumble across this one, trust me--you will adore it and will read it again and again as much as any of the fairy tales you loved as a child.

4 out of 5 stars Good for young readers.......1999-10-10

Like the other endless quests books, it is up to you to decide the hero's fate and the plot. It was my favorite endless quest book as a child, mostly because I love dragons. It's fun to read and different from the other books in Sci-fic.

                          Book Description

In 1996, when Howard Lyman warned America on The Oprah Winfrey Show that Mad Cow Disease was coming to America, offended cattlemen sued him and Oprah both. Not only were Lyman and Oprah vindicated in court, but events have proved many of Lyman's predictions absolutely right. Mad Cow Disease has come to America, and Lyman argues persuasively in No More Bull! that the problem will only grow more deadly until our government deals with it seriously.

In Mad Cowboy, Lyman, a fourth-generation Montana rancher turned vegetarian then vegan, told the story of his personal transformation after a spinal tumor, which he believes was caused by agricultural chemicals, nearly left him paralyzed. In No More Bull!, Lyman uses his humor, compassion, firsthand experience in agriculture, and command of the facts of health to argue that we might all profit by transforming our diets. He makes a powerful case that Alzheimer's is yet another disease linked to eating meat. And he explains that the steak at the heart of your dinner plate not only may destroy your own heart but actually offers no more nutritional value than a doughnut! If you've been confused by the competing claims of the Atkins Diet, the South Beach Diet, and other fad diets, No More Bull! is the book that will set you straight. Its pure, unvarnished truth is told with down-home common sense.

Lyman's got a message for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans -- and the message of No More Bull! is that we can all do better for ourselves and the planet.

                          4 out of 5 stars Fooled Myself.......2007-09-29

I originally bought this off a used-book cart at a neighborhood library, thinking it was going to be folklore or tall tales from the plains states. After my initial chagrin at having not obtained information that could easily be tied to Rober Welsch's TOUCHING THE FIRE, etc., I ploughed through MAD COWBOY. What a read! Who knew about the tapdance governmental entities executed to keep "the public" from knowing about Mad Cow Disease? If only half of what is printed here is accurate, we still should think seriously about re-engineering our eating habits! I sent copies to three people in my family, including a granddaughter who has been a vegetarian for over two years. The line about our farming practices making cows into bovine cannibals will be with me forever, I think!

3 out of 5 stars more of the same as "mad cowboy".......2007-06-28

Not bad, some useful recipes. The text of the book itself pretty much re-iterates what he wrote in mad cowboy. I haven't actually cooked anything from it yet, because I'm leaning toward ovo-lacto vegetarian, rather than vegan. I plan to cook some, as they look good, but probably not that many.

5 out of 5 stars another good one from howard........2007-02-11

very good sequel to mad cow, a good read for meatheads and veggies alike, picking up where his first, mad cowboy, left off. ideally these should be read in tandem with t colin campbell's china study and john robbins' diet for a new america and, if you are into it, healthy at 100. then start reading the raw stuff to supercharge your engine. cheers, jg

                          5 out of 5 stars Helped us a lot!.......2006-11-09

Both my girlfriend and I are vegetarians heading down the path towards veganism. I can't say enough about how great this book is. Not only for the initial information, but for the recipes that help you realize a vegan diet isn't going to involve living off of leaves and twigs. A lot of things are vegan, and they actually quite edible!

This book makes it seem so much more possible than either of us ever thought. It's also provided us a lot of ammunition to people asking that tired question, "Why!?!"

We've recommended it to all of our friends, and have loaned the book to multiple family members.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading, very educating.......2006-10-18

This book faces all the recent fad diets that became very popular very fast since 2000. Going through one by one the reader understand why Veganism is eventually the best diet for the human body, for the human mind and for the planet.
This book is so updated in relation to the current events and trends of the diet world in particular and the environment protection in general.

As an amid Vegan I recommend this book to any Vegetarian, Vegan or anyone who is on this path. It will give one more inspiration and encouragement like the first one -' Mad Cowboy' did.

Glen is an amazing write and puts ideas and thoughts in writing at the most pleasant way possible.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend reading for intelligent animal lovers.......2000-07-07

I picked this book up in the gift shop of the San Diego Zoo, one of the few of substance they had. Even for me, a casual, but intelligent zoo visitor, this was worth $30.00. There is much more to animal captivity than I realized. Every zoo has two sides: the happy, visitor side, and the business/breeding side. Everyone knows about the happy side of a zoo. This helps lift the curtain on the other side of animal management and makes me even more appreciative of the huge expense and efforts of countless thousands of dedicated people who toil in the background. Articles on anesthesia of large animals, ethics of zoos, breeding, all are informative, basic information that the informed animal lover should know about. Although this is written for other zoo professionals, I recommend it to the average Amazon browser who wants to dig a little deeper into life and its mysteries. Because these are articles from technical journals, they can be read in any order and used as a reference book. There is an excellent bibliography after each chapter, although for the layman it is doubtful if they would be read. At any rate, I'm glad I bought this book.

A very disorganized and vague book. Extremely hard to decipher. I had bought several peices of antiques when I started working at an antique store. I wanted to know if what I had was worth anything. This book gave me NO help at all in determining this. It was a complete waste of my money. Nothing is organized. For example, I bought a pineapple shaped glass decanter and instead of listing them under one subject they were scattered all through the book all in different places. Most of the items do not have pictures and these items discription are so vague that there is no way a normal person could determine what it means. The pictures they do have are black and white except for one small section. I was very disappointed with this book. There is no way it will help me figure out if any of the purchases I made are valuable.

Well,I seriously disagree with the people saying that "This book is more for serious collectors than kids". I am just 9 years old and this book is so clear and detailed! It is so much better than 1997 Beanie Baby handbook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The BB handbook '97 only shows the Beanies they have, and not good pictures either. Beanie Mania has perfecto pictures and they mention all early and a little late 1997 Beanies. And I'm happy they don't say "Put those Beanies in Ziploc bags" TY made Beanies for kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it...you must have it!.......1998-08-07

This was my first BB book I ever purchased. It is chock full of color pictures and info and facts about each beanie. It has- chronology, tag history, collectible ranking, market trend analysis, information guides, oddities and charts for the reader to fill in with their own beanie info. Anyone who purchases this book will refer to is over and over. Both Beckys need to create an updated book with the l998 info. This would definately be well received by all the readers who purchased the first Beanie Mania Guide. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for serious Beanie Baby collectors.......1998-07-28

The most serious book on Ty's Beanies thus far. Truly comprehensive, informative and enjoyable reading. A through guide to swing and tush tags; an excellent reference guide. I loved the pictures of Ty's prototypes and production errors! I had hesitated to buy yet another book on Beanies; after purchasing Beanie Mania I wished I had purchased it sooner. I have referred back to it on many occasions. Another plus: it's pages are filled with information! NOT kids drawings, games and letters on why they love Beanies! (Bless their little hearts!).Although it does not have the newer releases, the serious collector should add this book to their library!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but missing a few things.......1998-06-16

This is an awesome book! It is definitely the most colorful and one of the most interesting Beanie Baby books available. Beanie Mania covers several types of older and retired Beanies along with fabulous photos of every version of most of the Beanies. Also included is information on tags, prototypes, and Teenie Beanie Babies. However, especially since the book is almost a year old, it does not talk about or show pictures of newer Beanies. Nevertheless, I definitely recommend it!!!

A student of one of America's most beloved poets, Robert Frost, the young James Hayford was a native of Vermont. It was at Amherst College that he studied with Frost who became more than a teacher to him. Frost believed in Hayford and offered him $1,000 if he would stay in American and spend his time writing poetry. In 1935 that amount of money was enough for Hayford to live on for a whole year, and he accepted. We're grateful that he did for he has left the world a treasure of poems about New England, capturing its beauty and its hardships.

"Knee-Deep In Blazing Snow," a collection especially edited for young readers, covers the four seasons of the year beginning with Summer and "Hay-Jumpers": "When hay was put in loose, We jumpers had our use...." A reminder of the fun youngsters had jumping in the hay.

Autumn is heralded with "Night Milking Time" and Winter with "First Snow":

"Blanketing fields that lately were bare brown,
Let this soft midnight snow brings blessings down
On all the people in the little town."

Special pleasure is found in reading Hayford's poems aloud and, of course, the talented Michael McCurdy's woodcuts are the perfect accompaniment to this collection subtitled "Growing Up In Vermont."

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Jewel.......2005-12-20

This gentle book of poetry is wonderful and would make a good gift for anyone fond of New England and the outdoors, be they child or adult. James Hayford was encouraged by meeting Robert Frost when young, and went on to be an evocative, if unjustly overlooked, poet. The title of the book suggests his grasp of imagery, and skilful rhyme and meter predominate throughout. In the Frost tradition, Hayford's style is not flowery, but simple and direct. In four sections (one devoted to each season, as expertly selected by the book's editors), he celebrates the simple joys of jumping in hay, spotting wildlife, playing in snow, trains in the distance, etc. Gorgeous black and white scratchboard illustrations by Michael McCurdy add to the quiet enjoyment.

“Ilyasah Shabazz has written a compelling and lyrical coming-of-age story as well as a candid and heart-warming tribute to her parents. Growing Up X is destined to become a classic.”
                                        –SPIKE LEE

February 21, 1965: Malcolm X is assassinated in Harlem’s Audubon Ballroom. June 23, 1997: After surviving for a remarkable twenty-two days, his widow, Betty Shabazz, dies of burns suffered in a fire. In the years between, their six daughters reach adulthood, forged by the memory of their parents’ love, the meaning of their cause, and the power of their faith. Now, at long last, one of them has recorded that tumultuous journey in an unforgettable memoir: Growing Up X.

Born in 1962, Ilyasah was the middle child, a rambunctious livewire who fought for–and won–attention in an all-female household. She carried on the legacy of a renowned father and indomitable mother while navigating childhood and, along the way, learning to do the hustle. She was a different color from other kids at camp and yet, years later as a young woman, was not radical enough for her college classmates. Her story is, sbove all else, a tribute to a mother of almost unimaginable forbearance, a woman who, “from that day at the Audubon when she heard the shots and threw her body on [ours, never] stopped shielding her children.”

                                        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-06-07

I don't think this book lived up to the hype. It's very disorganized and the topics she discusses are all over the place. She skips around throughout the entire book. Her tone is also a bit irritating. I expected a mature narration of her life, but it seemed like the book was written by a teenager.

The author was often overly dramatic when it came to simple topics, stuck to unimportant topics for too long, gave important issues very little attention, and kept referring to her mother as "Mommy". I sensed a repetition of the same issues. There also wasn't a shortage of clichés in the book: She mentions during 4 or 5 different instances that she started "Finding out who I really was".

Despite the struggles her parents endured, it seems she has lived a very sheltered life and had pretty much everything handed to her: She got into college without applying, had all her expenses taken care of throughout college, and didn't seem to have many responsibilities, even throughout adulthood. I found it strange that she didn't read her father's autobiography until she got to college. You'd expect the daughter of a civil rights leader to be much more involved, but she either didn't care enough to continue his work or simply didn't mention it. Overall this book didn't give me the insight I had expected. It was very shallow and I didn't find much substance in it. She doesn't seem to have many significant life experiences, but rather chose to write about that of her parents.

I felt that this was a great book. This book has shown how a mother and her children who had seen there father and husband killed . But still the the mother went on to continute her education while seeing that her girls recevied the best education
they could receive. I feel that Malcolm X was a man way before his time and this didn't start with Malcolm X it began with Malcolm X's father. Who also was a man before his time.

The author wrote a good book for the most part, yet came off to me as little ungreatful. I am refering to the inference about the movie based on the life of her Father, MALCOLM X.

1 out of 5 stars Who would read a book by such an ignorant racist?.......2005-02-06

I just saw the commercial for "Growing Up X". The author stated that when she was young and in school she was taught that Columbus discovered America. Upon hearing this she questioned the teacher and asked how America could have been "discovered" when people were already here. Evidently Miss X still thinks that this was some kind of brilliant revelation. For all the idiots out there that think that she has a great point, please let me "school" you for a second. Discover is a subjective word. Things can be discovered by either a stated or implied person or group and things which have been discoved by one group can also be discovered by another group. For instance, I can say that "this weekend I discovered a great bar down on South Street". That doesn't mean that no one else has been there before. It just means that this was the weekend that I discovered it. When history books state that Columbus discoved America in 1492 it is implied that it was discoved by Columbus and hence the civilized Western and Eastern worlds who did not know about its existence. I too had the same revelation when I was young, the difference is that I have become much smarter since then. I just love it when ignorant, uneducated, black racists try to "teach" us poor white folk something. It's like the blind leading those with 20/20 vision. Miss X is so racist and hates whites so much that she is willing to state something incredibly foolish just to try to convince other fools that whites are somehow wrong. What is really funny is that usually commercials sample the best of something (such as a movie) to create interest. If this "brilliant epiphany" demonstrates the best this book has to offer I feel sorry for the poor saps that buy it and even more sorry for the simple people that believe it. If for some reason sitting on the couch, listening to rap and hip hop and blaming whites for your problems isn't dropping your IQ quite as fast as you had hoped, then this book might just be for you.

This book gave an inside scoop on how Ilyasah and her sisters were raised by their mother Betty. I was surprised at all the privalages they receieved. There were some interesting facts on her mother and father's relationship that warmed my heart. All and all though I feel this book only dabbled on she & her sisters as a family unit. There was no mention of the birth of her sister's children, what they were feeling as expectant mothers, any marriages that took place. I found that disappointing, however it was still a good read.

Her grandparents joined the Nation of Islam in 1952, which makes Sonsyrea Tate a third-generation member of the Nation. In this fascinating glimpse at life behind the scenes in an NOI family, Tate tells of going to a Muslim school, of the changes in the Nation after the death of its leader, Elijah Muhammad, and of the tensions within her family after her mother converted to Orthodox Islam. For all that it is a profoundly interesting account of growing up in a different culture, in the end Tate's is a quintessentially American story of a child coming of age and finding her own path.

                                        Book Description

Since the 1930s, the Nation of Islam has been one of the foremost all-black organizations in the United States. Yet for most people outside the movement, it has been known only through media portrayals of the controversial leaders such as Malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan. As a young girl, Sonsyrea Tate was one of tens of thousands of "Little X's," the children raised within the Nation of Islam as future foot soldiers of black unity. In Little X, Tate, an award winning journalist, shows us the Nation of Islam from the inside: Little X is the compelling account of one woman's cultural identiy, family unity and spiritual fulfillment in a predominantly white and Christian America.

I do not understand why *Little X* went out of print. I was assigned it in a university course and loved it. Where else can we read about women's experiences in African-American Islam and Christianity?

There are big differences between the various kinds of Islam in this country and we need to know them all. It is human to interpret a religion according to one's own community needs, and that is what the Nation was for in Tate's early days. It is well-written. Why copy edit out the dialogue of family truths and pains and growth. Where is Tate today? Everyone in my class enjoyed reading *Little X* - and when I went to get a copy for a gift, I couldn't believe they stopped printing them.

Ms. Tate writes about her experiences growing up in the Nation of Islam (NOI). She discusses her bizarre education at the Nation of Islam school and her difficult adjustment to the public school system after the NOI school was shut down. In a span of several years she listens as the adults around her complain that the leaders of the NOI are not following their own rules (and there are a LOT of rules). Then she discovers that her parents are also not following the rules; they have a stash of marijuana in their bedroom, which she steals and smokes several times per day. She describes her mother's movement from NOI, to orthodox islam, and finally to the Church of Scientology. Unfortunately the book is repetitive and there are many statements that you will read twice. I don't know where the editor was on this one. This book is written in an adolescent voice and actually reminds me a lot of another memoir: "Red Scarf Girl" by Ji-Li Jiang (about the Chinese Cultural Revolution). A good book for teens and pre-teens.

The author's paternal grandparents joined the Nation of Islam in the early 1950s and by the time she was born in 1966, the family enjoyed a leading position in the Washington, D.C. temple. With a memory that borders slightly on the unbelievable, Tate recounts her early childhood in the Nation, followed by her mother's conversion to mainstream Islam, the discovery of her family's religious hypocrisy, and then her own crisis of faith and exit from Islam, followed by a journalistic career that included a stint at The Washington Post. Tate's account has particular value for giving a sense of the life of the poor but defiant life that NOI membership entails. The awkwardness of being marked by NOI customs (clothing, diet, female modesty, no extracurricular activites or games) comes through as one strong motif ("I felt like an ugly duck"), plus the extreme relief at being able, once no longer a Muslim, to blend in with the crowd. Tate makes vivid the narrow scope of her ambitions ("I knew . . . the only reason I was on this Earth [was] to become a good wife and mother") and describes the total protection by her male relatives against non-NOI men ("If somebody made your sister cry, you gotta beat him up!") -- though, alas, not against non-NOI women and their cutting remarks. She recalls rumors of Fruit of Islam hit squads, the agony as an eight-year-old sitting straight through an eleven-hour temple service, and her Christian grandmother who tried to trick her into eating pork ("we knew better than to eat any pink meat"). More surprising is the author's endorsement of her education at an NOI elementary school, despite its obvious drawbacks ("We didn't have textbooks, so the dictionary pretty much became our spelling book").

Fantastic. I study religion, and this book provided fascinating new insight into a movement that has changed and gone through many hands. I learned a lot, and chnaged my point of view as a result...I guess that the number one thing that I learned was that all people just want an identity...and Elijah Muhammad provided that African American with that. There are a lot of interesting facts that one can glean from this book.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent entry into growing up in a religous system.......1999-04-16

While many texts in religious studies focus on the conversion moment of significant, historical religious figures, few discuss and deal with the issues of a child growing up within a particular system. This book does an outstanding job of addressing just such a need. The areas of children's life and children's culture within the study of religion has gained a great deal with this text. Tate gives the reader an insightful look into the world of a family torn apart by changes in religious affiliation. She also directly adresses the problems that such changes can cause to the children of such a family. Her account of becoming involved with drugs as a teenager is heartbreaking. To those looking for an insightful and informative look into the Nation of Islam, changes that occured to the Nation and the practice of Orthodox Islam in the inner cities of the United States will also find the text extremely useful. The book is not a practical guide of Islamic praxis, but more importantly, an account of a young person exploring the limitations of herself and her relgious upbringing. Tate's experience with the Nation of Islam as a child, and her first expereinces outside the Nation's schools (going into the public school system) should be a wake up call to those who view their worldview as superior to others. Her eventual triumphs in life and her own maturity in acepting relgious systems should be inspiring to all who claim to be religiously tolerant.

Modern is a word much used, but hard to pin down. In Inventing Modern, John H. Lienhard uses that word to capture the furious rush of newness in the first half of 20th-century America. An unexpected world emerges from under the more familiar Modern. Beyond the airplanes, radios, art deco, skyscrapers, Fritz Lang's Metropolis, Buck Rogers, the culture of the open road--Burma Shave, Kerouac, and White Castles--lie driving forces that set this account of Modern apart. One force, says Lienhard, was a new concept of boyhood--the risk-taking, hands-on savage inventor. Driven by an admiration of recklessness, America developed its technological empire with stunning speed. Bringing the airplane to fruition in so short a time, for example, were people such as Katherine Stinson, Lincoln Beachey, Amelia Earhart, and Charles Lindbergh. The rediscovery of mystery powerfully drove Modern as well. X-Rays, quantum mechanics, and relativity theory had followed electricity and radium. Here we read how, with reality seemingly altered, hope seemed limitless. Lienhard blends these forces with his childhood in the brave new world. The result is perceptive, engaging, and filled with surprise. Whether he talks about Alexander Calder (an engineer whose sculptures were exercises in materials science) or that wacky paean to flight, Flying Down to Rio, unexpected detail emerges from every tile of this large mosaic. Inventing Modern is a personal book that displays, rather than defines, an age that ended before most of us were born. It is an engineer's homage to a time before the bomb and our terrible loss of confidence--a time that might yet rise again out of its own postmodern ashes.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overall View.......2004-10-16

Lienhard's book is a personal account of the age of Modern, a term he defines as more a state of mind than an actual event or time. The operative word is personal. It is difficult to fully interpret biographical events as part of the epoch-changing phenomenon he calls "Modern".

"Modern", which began in the 19th century, affected not only the physical world but how we viewed that world. The author opines as to how an object or idea is either pre, post or actually modern. The range - from architecture to art to war to electricity and inventions - cover the gambit.

Lienhard believes "Modern" denotes a societal mindset, one we no longer possess. He is absolutely correct. Our society is awash in waves of data that can be neither integrated nor understood. Our spirit (for lack of a better word) is unlike the Modern pioneers. We've lost our innocence, our belief that technology will better our lives. Nor do we seek knowledge for its own sake. This is illustrated by popular myths: The environment is degrading, the economy is collapsing, chemicals are lethal, life is drugery, etc. The facts are, the UN again rated the US #1 for clean water and safe food, we are richer than ever, we have unprecedented free time and access to virtually any entertainment, news or information at our fingertips. In this post-modern age, the cry is for something different.

The author IS correct that "Modern" stopped in the 1950's. We define "modern architecture" as Frank Lloyd Wright, "modern art" as Andy Warhol and Mark Rothko, "modern cars" as snazzy Vets. Yet biotechnology, space travel and new inventions may usher in a new age he calls "Expanded". Recommended for serious readers.

5 out of 5 stars Artifice Vs. Artifact.......2004-07-09

This is modern archaeology at its best. John Lienhard writes a thoughtful, moving book encircling our history through the eyes of an engineer. Inventing Modern traces the watershed inventions of the twentieth century, cataloguing their importance in the arc of our civilization. Without invention, the author argues, there are no artifacts of history. Taking a scientist's erudite perspective and infusing it with a healthy dose of playfulness and an artless sense of history, Lienhard tells us what it is to be American, modern, nuclear, analog, and even digital. Lienhard sees invention with a sense of irony, tragedy and pure joy. "Inventing" is not a dialectic dismantling of our Dionysian times but rather a surprising and hopeful and even dreamy look at the (recent past and) future of civilization from the perspective of a crafty engineer unafraid to stare down that elusive American improvisational spirit. You can read Arthur C.Clarke for fantasies of an alter-universe, but to get down to the nuts and bolts of the history and the scholarly soul of the space elevator project (for example) currently in its planning stages off the coast of the Pacific, read Lienhard. His is a most eloquent telling- an optimistic, un-patronizing work with a very strong vision of mankind's makings.
