Eureka Street: A Novel of Ireland Like No Other
ASIN: 0345430948 |
Amazon.com
"I am twenty-one years old, my name is Ripley Bogle and my occupations are starving, freezing, and weeping hysterically." So announces the eponymous narrator of this alternately hilarious and horrifying novel by the Irish writer Robert McLiam Wilson, author of Eureka Street. Ripley Bogle is a Cambridge dropout from Northern Ireland who's fallen down on his luck. Having alienated everyone he knows--seemingly including the entire population of Cambridge--he disrupts an old girlfriend's wedding, attacks his landlord, and finds himself unceremoniously chucked out onto the street. The narrative follows this handsome vagrant for four chilly June days while he wanders London, ranting and reminiscing in heady stream-of-consciousness prose. Reared amid the poverty and violence of Belfast, Bogle doesn't have a kind word for anyone or anything, including his family ("the usual cast list of subhuman Gaelic scumbuckets") and his countrymen ("As a people we're a shambles; as a nation--a disgrace; as a culture we're a bore ... individually we're often repellent"). What he does have is a great Joycean roar of a voice and a prodigious talent for self-destruction. Bogle can try the reader's patience: some of his tirades read like tragicomic howls of pain, others like pure postadolescent gross-out. The novel's end takes a still nastier turn; even after Bogle's unrelentingly grim portrait of life on the London streets, his concluding confessions manage to shock. Ugliness aside, the sheer wattage of Wilson's prose carries the day, and his narrative has all the momentum--and the queasy fascination--of a car accident in progress. --Mary Park
Book Description
A Cambridge dropout turned penniless drifter, the unforgettable Ripley Bogle takes us through the underbelly of London and into the surreal world of a vagabond. But Bogle is not your average bum. With a razor-sharp intellect, prodigious powers of perception, and better-than-average appearance ("Most movie stars would give their false back teeth for the kind of lived-in look that I possess"), Bogle careens through the wild streets of homelessness and Irish identity, all the while regaling us with the tale of his ragged Belfast past--and the events that led up to his extraordinary existence.
In a brilliant coupling of sardonic, self-deprecating wit and the lush lyricism of a poet, Robert McLiam Wilson brings us a fiercely modern character with an old soul. Imbued with a grace that is thoroughly at odds with his squalid world, Ripley Bogle gnaws at the fringes of society and skewers its fat heart. The result is a hilarious, unexpectedly touching novel that is destined to become a classic.

The First Novel by the Author of Eureka St.......2006-11-11
I read this novel after reading "Eureka St." which I loved for the characters and the writing. The writing is definetly here in "Ripley Bogle," and the character, if not as joyful as before, is still here. The novel is very different, it tends more towards the darker side of the human soul. Having said that though, it was fascinating to read as the character continues to descend into the depth of depravity while you continue to cheer for him. The character is just that charming. I would recommend this book, but I would also advise reading "Eureka St." to get a full appreciation of the abilities of the author.
Ireland for realists. .......2006-07-30
Robert Mcliam Wilson is, in my humble opinion, the great Irish writer of our age, joining the likes of other Irish notables James Joyce and Cathal Ó Sándair.
Ripley Bogle, while a step down from the splintering tale that was Eureka Street (a personal favorite of mine), is still worth a read or two. It features the life of the title character - a quick-witted, borderline-genius who goes from a precocious Cambridge student to a homeless roamer in little to no time. He is handsome, sardonic, and as we read we find that he, like Jake Jackson from Eureka Street, also has become numb to the constant violence and political turmoil that surrounds him. Some have compared Bogle to 'The Catcher in the Rye's' Holden Caulfield, but I think Bogle acts as his own man and to compare them quickly proves hollow once you read Ripley Bogle.
What I like most about Wilson is that he intertwines poetry, wit and humor into even the most disturbing of events - like the betrayal and death of a best friend at the hands of the I.R.A. - and he does the trick again here in Ripley Bogle. Wilson has yet to grasp the due credit for his work because he paints Ireland with a brush that is honest and real, without the romanticism that Americans love to read about. The New York Times at one point even refused him an endorsement, saying his books were not Irish enough. Wilson responded by saying he knew what Ireland was due to the fact he's lived there all of his life.
I highly recommend both Ripley Bogle and Eureka Street to anyone curious enough to deploy some reading about Ireland as seen through possibly its greatest writer of our day.
buy this book now.......2004-01-03
robert mcliam wilson dropped out of college to live on the street and write this book, and i think it's safe to say that was a brilliant move. ripley bogle makes almost none of the mistakes first-time-novelists tend to make. it stretches the intellect of the reader, the author, and of bogle himself. this (along with wilson's second novel, eureka street) is among the best books written by my generation. if you think all the great literary masters are dead and gone, you're sadly mistaken. you should read ripley bogle. your friends should read it. and everyone else you know, for that matter, should read it too.
No Holden Caulfield.......2002-03-07
After reading very favorable reviews, I got the impression this book would be about an "Irish Holden Caulfield." (Catcher in the Rye.) There were some similairities. They are both young men narrating the story of their own demise from formal education to homelessness. Both speak directly to the reader, telling us what we would think of something, then reiterating. (you'd love it, you really would.) But I found Ripley Bogle to be a difficult book to get through. The author uses such extreme vocabulary, there were times I wish he'd put away his thesaurus and just tell the story. There were some very witty passages and extremely detailed descriptions, but a lot of excess. This is just my humble opinion, but I don't care for the books where the writing is a lot more noticable than the story.
Thank God, a writer who WRITES!.......2001-09-26
McLiam Wilson shows his youth in this first novel, but his Dickensian attention to detail is usually a thrill to behold. I'm so sick of writing being a by-the-way of telling stories. Though not without the wit present in Eureka Street, the operative adjective here is "beautiful:" every word is where it should be, every sentence is in its rightful place, and the book leaves one thinking of the author, "how does he DO that?" For readers who want to read a book written using language to benefit a plot instead of just convey it, Ripley Bogle is a godsend. The end will make your jaw drop.

Ugh. What a horrible book!.......2005-11-12
Good gravy. How this thing got any attention at all is unbelievable. This is a dumb book. There's no point. It's tough to read because the writer throws in 5-dollar-words in every sentence to convince us that the main character (a homeless guy) has some charm. This book is tough to read, the language doesn't flow, there is NO POINT, nothing happens in this book, and it has absolutely no charm whatsoever. This is the type of book which I throw out, so that no one ever has to lay eyes on it ever again. This is the type of book that should be thrown into a book-burning-pyre so that no one else ever has to waste their life reading it ever again.

so close.......2007-05-10
We're almost there!! if we can just get through novels like this with the minimum of effort everything should be okay! I had a strange sence of forboding when i picked up this novel. I dont know why but tremere are one of my least faverate clans and i was hopeing that it wasnt going to be stiff and slow going. But it was! the first half of the book is rather slow and im bored but theres a few nice touches, like a sceane where the council of seven are still mortals and they are eating one of their prized apprentices for lunch cuz they have no other food...or maybe they just like the taste of human flesh. its easy to see now why they liked the idea of being vampires and feeding off of humans. Also you have a nice sceane with some gargoyles talking about the concept of master and servant and you see the first mutterings of the Gargoyle revolt. But other than that....not much happens till you get to Livonia where, truth be told, it does get better. I love the earth magic in this but in the end its not a great book.
Blood Magic.......2005-09-12
With Alexander destroyed in the Livonian campaign, Prince Jurgen can now pursue his own interests without the competition and intrigue that for which Alexander was noted. While much relieved he seizes an opportunity for revenge that will allow him to remove another thorn from his court, the Tremere mage Jervais.
It is easy to underestimate Jervais, who shows little taste for the hardships of the north of Europe. Even his masters in the enclave of Ceoris view him with doubt, but find the idea of having Jervais lead a punitive expedition back into the forests of Livonia attractive. Jurgen will get his revenge, the Tremere will strike back at Deverra, who deserted the Tremere to form her own band on the Northern Steppes. And just maybe, Jervais will undo himself in the process.
But Jervais is made of sterner and more devious stuff. His band of seven blood mages with the reinforcement of the Knights of the Black Cross keep surviving against the insurmountable odds of an alien magic in an alien land. Matching Deverra spell for spell shows an unexpected competence and an extraordinarily unpleasant personality.
Gervais is a closs tie with Alexander for most obnoxious vampire of this series. While this is the volume with the most action so far, The Tremere mages have no personality to hang on to. You keep hoping that Deverra and Qarakh will put Jervais down, but every time he manages to weasel through. It becomes easy to understand why the Tremere are as unpopular as they are - not even other Tremere like them.
I found the book a bit tedious. Deverra's appearances are brief, and looking over Jervais' shoulders too long makes the reader want to wash their hands. I was hoping that the increase in the use of magic would add interest, but it all comes down to who has the biggest fireball, and that only amuses for a short time. While Tremere doesn't become a didactic demonstration of vampire history, it also never quite lives up to its promise either.
map needed.......2004-04-21
Have a map of Eastern Europe handy when reading this book as it tends to jump around from locale to locale with few reference points. Why one wasn't included, as has been done with previous volumes in this series, is beyond me. The book is well-written but tends to leave out standard storytelling "glue" like "she walked over to" or "he went upstairs." If you're not careful, you'll often find yourself in a new paragraph unaware that the characters have done something, moved somewhere, or completed an interim action that drives what's happening now.
Book Description
The Compleat Boucher contains all of the science fiction and fantasy written by Anthony Boucher. It contains such classic stories as "The Quest for Saint Aquin," "Snulbug," and "The Compleat Werewolf." Many of the stories collected here have never before appeared in a Boucher collection, and some haven't been reprinted since their original magazine publication. "Rappaccini's Other Daughter" appears here for the first time.

A fine collection, and a 'must-have' for Boucher fans.......2000-07-21
______________________________________________
William Anthony Parker White (1911-1968) is perhaps best knownas one of the founding editors of the Magazine of Fantasy and ScienceFiction. He was a distinguished book reviewer (for the NewYork Times and Herald-Tribune) and did much to raise literary standards for SF, both as an editor and critic, and as the author of the wry, literate, understated and still very readable stories collected here: 43 sf/f/h shorts (plus a 'poem' and a recipe), mostly written between 1940 and 1952.
This is a collection to be read a story or two at a time, or at least that's how I read it. Boucher's best stories -- "The Quest for St. Aquin", "The Compleat Werewolf", "Snulbug", "They Bite", "The Star Dummy" -- have entered the permanent sf/f/h repertoire and will be familiar to most, umm, 'mature' readers. I would urge younger readers, who could hardly be expected to drop 25 bucks on a collection of half-century old stories by someone they've barely heard of, to borrow the collection from your public library, and try (at least) the stories listed above. As in any complete collection, there are minor works, though I found everything here at least readable. A sample:
I am the very model of a modern s f editor.
My publisher is happy, as is each and every creditor.
I know the market trends and how to please the newsstand

With agents and name authors my relations can't be courteouser.

In short, in manners monetary, social, and promotional,
I am the very model of a pro s f devotional.

As always, NESFA books are a pleasure to read & hold: smooth, creamy paper, solid, full-cloth bindings, and a fine period cover of "Wolfie" by Jane Dennis. I do wish that editor Mann would have included a bit more biographical information about the author -- a page and a half seems skimpy.
Happy reading--

Tony Boucher.......1999-12-21
Tony Boucher was one of the great editors of SF. He was the editor of the Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy in the 1950's, when the magazine was first finding its way. To this day, it still retains some of the glory and sparkle that he put there.
Before he was a great editor, he was a great writer. This book contains his short stories.
It is good that the NESFA keeps the names of Anthony Boucher, C.M. Kornbluth, Cordwainer Smith and other writers of the past alive. Their stories should be read and re-read even today.
A Must for Serious Readers of Science Fiction.......1999-04-25
Some of these stories are dated, but some are very powerful. I particularly recommend "We Print the Truth," a long story about the corruptive nature of power.

Still a valuable resource.......2006-11-10
While not as exhaustive as "Oz Clarke's Encylopedia of Grapes", this does contain information that Clarke's book does not. Before the three sections on grapes (Classic Varieties, Major Varieties, Other Varieties) there is a section entitled "Where Grapes Grow and Why" that provides valuable insight. Some of the information is dated, however, and that should be a caution to anyone reading this for use as a text. For example, the book uses a 1979 "census" of the varieties grown in Champagne. The figures quoted in 1979 are far different than those today. So be careful if you quote this book with specific regard to data.
A reference book no-one should be caught without.......2003-08-16
Simply put, this is one of the classics and a must-have for anyone with more than a passing interest in wine. Although it is several years old now and certain parts are out of date in terms of trends and the planting patterns of some younger wine-producing countries, the important bits are still are relevant as ever. The most comprehensive and invaluable book on grape varieties, purely for its reference fact value. Oz Clarke and Margaret Rand have written a more up-to-date bok covering the same topic, but that is less focussed on the grape itself as the wines made around the world with the particular grape. If you can have both, all the better, but if you had to choose one, this one would be it.
Fascinating.......2002-09-02
This is a fascinating, well-written book, sure to be of interest to anyone wanting to deepen their knowledge of what's in their wine glass. It's a perfect companion piece to Johnson and Robinson's _Wine Atlas_. The bulk of the book is devoted to descriptions of "classic," "major," and "other" varieties, with the first two categories getting detailed treatment. There's also a section on "Where grapes grow and why" and some very interesting maps and analyses of great vineyards (e.g., Chateau Margaux and the Rutherford Bench).
One minor caveat is that the book doesn't seem to have been revised since it first appeared in 1986. So some of the "sociological" parts of the text (e.g., where specific varietals are being grown, and comments on their popularity) are becoming increasingly out of date, especially for the New World. But it's kind of interesting to be reminded that in the mid-1980s Syrah (aka Shiraz) enjoyed only "very limited popularity" (p. 90).
Deep perspective.......2001-10-05
Jancis Robinson has long been one of the established authorities on wine. I once watched her and Oz Clark in a wine tasting 'contest' on television. They were an even match with scores of almost 100% on vineyard, price, year, quality etc. I've also watched Robinson's television series on wines and her knowledge and enthusiasm seem to know no bounds.
In 'Vines, Grapes and Wines' Jancis Robinson puts this enthusiasm and knowledge to good use, producing 280 large format pages of unadulterated information and pictures. It's clear she wants her readers to know not just about the wine itself, but about the region, the soil, the climate, the vintners, the wine's history.
This is not an cozy weekend read, it's much more a reference book that gives both pleasure and information, but well worth the investment for any serious wine buff.
Detailed and pretty interesting.......2000-03-01
This book is incredibly informative. I often re-read sections because you cannot absorb all the information at once. Robinson's writing is clear, but sometimes the details (especially the history sections) are dry. I think of this as almost a text book but a readable text book with great pictures!

Very little breed specific information.......2006-12-20
The fact that this book is mostly made up of generic dog information is only part of the problem. I picked up this book because I wanted more information on Yorkies specifically. Since Yorkies are so small, there's a lot of stuff that may be different when caring for them as compared to, say, a Golden Retriever. Don't get me wrong; much of that kind of information is universal, and it is helpful to know the things that apply to all dogs. But this book is being sold as a book about caring for Yorkies, and that is what I expected. There are many generic dog care books out there, and frankly, many of them are much better than this one.
Aside from that, this book is poorly written and edited. I found many grammatical and syntactic errors in the first few chapters.
I also have Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies, and I think it is a much better book than this one. Choose that one instead.
Your Yorkshire Terrier's Life.......2006-03-22
Great book for anyone who is planning on getting a Yorkie and an awesome reference for you after you get your Yorkie !! I have had my 2 Yorkies for 4 weeks and have referenced it MANY times. I highly recommend it.
Your Yorkshire Terriers Life.......2006-03-15
Alot of good information I didn't know. Very helpful for someone who has never had one of these unique little doggies. This book probably helped to save my puppies life by describing symptoms of a genetic disease common to Yorkies I kept persuing answers to my dogs unusual behavior. He eventalyy was diagnosed with a liver shunt and under went surgery 2 weeks ago. All is GREAT now.
A lot of health information........2004-06-22
I found this book to be helpful. I am not yet a Yorkie owner but a Yorkie owner in training. This book has a great deal of health-related information about Yorkies, including the standards tips for raising a puppy vs. an adult dog. It was very similar to The Complete Idiot's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers, by Liz Palika, which I liked better for the information regarding potty training and obedience training.
Clear advice for new Yorkie owners.......2004-04-09
I've been researching purchasing a Yorkie puppy (as a pet and companion not to show or breed) and this is the best of the books on caring for the breed that I've read thus far. I started with Janet Jackson's book and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers by Liz Palika. Both are very good, but I found Gewirtz's book to be more thorough for my needs. It doesn't just stress the importance of socialization or obedience training, but tells you the right age to begin these processes. Also, the information is presented in a clear, well-organized fashion. It's simply easier to find the information you need. Obviously, you shouldn't just buy one book on the breed or raising your dog, but this should definitely be on your list.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Over-rated book of pictures........2002-09-09
I bought this book as a resource guide book, and it didn't give me any information I already didn't know. It is basically a book of pictures that is very cluttered in how it is put together. Although the photos were beautiful, after 1 week, it now is a large paper weight.
It basically just dissapointed me after I took a closer look at it.
Chicago Home Book.......2002-02-20
Nothing comes close to this book. I was going to build my dream house...I needed help, I needed advice....I needed to know who to use and what to ask...The Chicago Home Book brought me to my architect, my builder and my interior designer...my house is the best! The best thing about the book is the photos....beautiful idea generating photos of insides and outsides of the best homes in Chicago and the area. I understand it comes out each year...a new one with new photos...I love to look at what others are doing in their homes.

Book Description
Performance artist and scholar E. Patrick Johnson’s provocative study examines how blackness is appropriated and performed—toward widely divergent ends—both within and outside African American culture. Appropriating Blackness develops from the contention that blackness in the United States is necessarily a politicized identity—avowed and disavowed, attractive and repellent, fixed and malleable. Drawing on performance theory, queer studies, literary analysis, film criticism, and ethnographic fieldwork, Johnson describes how diverse constituencies persistently try to prescribe the boundaries of "authentic" blackness and how performance highlights the futility of such enterprises.
Johnson looks at various sites of performed blackness, including Marlon Riggs’s influential documentary Black Is . . . Black Ain’t and comedic routines by Eddie Murphy, David Alan Grier, and Damon Wayans. He analyzes nationalist writings by Amiri Baraka and Eldridge Cleaver, the vernacular of black gay culture, an oral history of his grandmother’s experience as a domestic worker in the South, gospel music as performed by a white Australian choir, and pedagogy in a performance studies classroom. By exploring the divergent aims and effects of these performances—ranging from resisting racism, sexism, and homophobia to excluding sexual dissidents from the black community—Johnson deftly analyzes the multiple significations of blackness and their myriad political implications. His reflexive account considers his own complicity, as ethnographer and teacher, in authenticating narratives of blackness.

Smart, Readable and Extremely Important.......2004-06-24
APPROPRIATING BLACKNESS demonstrates a mastery of the field of performance studies and of the shifts and turns it has taken in its evolution. This fact makes Johnson's own observations about "performance" as trope all the more convincing and authoritative. This is the through-line that unites these essays into what a strong, rich, and important book to scholars working in performance studies, cultural studies, gender studies, American studies, and African American studies to name but a few areas. This broad appeal and significance represents Johnson's real success as an inter-disciplinarian where so many authors published today with such aspirations fall short. This is a very timely and impressively readable book presented with the air and authority of a scholar's expertise, but written in a style that is extremely approachable by general readers.
