4 out of 5 stars Intro to Helicopter flight.......2007-08-14

I decided to try about ten hours in training for piloting a helicopter. I don't intend to complete this work as of my age and the cost prohibit my considering a career as a helicpter pilot. However, as an airplane pilot I was curious. The book Robinson R22 was very helpful as it covers the preflight inspection very well with pictures and location of the varous parts. Along with good flight instruction it helps anticipate the problems of controlling a very difficult machine. I would recommend both the R22 as a good training machine and the book as a constant companion when out of the helicopter but anticipating the next lesson.

    Book Description

Flight of the Swan is the irrepressibly charming tale of a world-famous Russian prima ballerina who finds herself stranded in Puerto Rico in 1917. Because of extraordinary political events in her home country, her troupe is forced to remain in the Caribbean for three months. During that time Madame falls desperately in love with a local, young revolutionary. Narrated by Madame's devotee Masha, Flight of the Swan explores the complexities of love and betrayal, and personal sacrifice for the sake of public art. Gradually, Masha comes to see that in spite of what she perceives as Madame's pretension and vanity, the ballerina's true love is dance, and she is prepared to forsake almost everything for it.

Like her National Book Award nominated The House on the Lagoon, Flight of the Swan is grounded in rich Puerto Rican history and culture and it compassionately and compellingly examines the essential question of where true happiness lies.

"The magic in Ferre's fiction arises from the intertwined experiences of human beings, carrying the story of twentieth-century Puerto Rico in the arc of their lives." (Mark Childress, The New York Times Book Review)

"A stunning display of talent...much of the beauty in Flight of the Swan lies in the effortless pirouettes of Ferre's lyrical writing." (The Miami Herald)

    4 out of 5 stars Terrific Book.......2002-01-07

This is the first book of Ferre's that I read and I found it just fine. I agree with Publisher's Weekly that the introduction of a new voice near the end was jarring. But as someone not familiar with Puerto Rico of the early 20the Century I thought it was interesting, and the descriptions of the ballet company were engrossing. Great literature? No. A good read about two subjects exotic to most readers -- old Puerto Rico and ballet? Yes. I think it would make a great movie.

2 out of 5 stars What we don't see counts........2001-12-13

It may have clean verbage and a winning premise, but the story misses at every turn. The book attempts to cover Puerto Rican weather, politics, the social climate, and the main focus: a Russian ballerina and her dance troupe. But the novel fails to cover anything well. The book never fleshes out the characters. Every scene which might engage the reader and become exciting happens off stage so that we're left with a narrator's lackluster reference to it. We don't even really see the ballerinas warm-up, let alone feel their joy in dancing. I'm not sure what the writer's goal was since there's very little tension, and the story fails to have a clear plot.

5 out of 5 stars Historical fiction at its best.......2001-09-18

I loved this book... I started reading it in the cobblestoned streets of Old San Juan, on my way to snack on a famous buttered "mallorca" accompanied by cafe con leche from La Bombonera bakery. Before I knew it, I was enthralled in the story. I found myself walking the same streets as the characters, sitting in San Juan's main plazas while I read about the characters strolling at night in the same streets.... This book does a fantastic job of combining Puerto Rican culture and its political turmoil at the turn of the 19th century with the struggles of Russia during their revolution. The main characters are russian and they slowly become "latinized"-- more universal symbols of political struggle, characters that are displaced from their homeland to face the struggle of a new culture, language, and political struggle. This is Rosario Ferre's best book.

3 out of 5 stars Swans in Puerto Rico?.......2001-08-01

I am a big fan of Rosario Ferre. Her stories make me connect with that long lost Puerto Rico. However, I wonder---- why write a ballerina's story in 1917 Puerto Rico? Although it is still worth reading, definetely not one of her bests!!!!!!!!!!.

2 out of 5 stars Flying short: Ferré's new novel cannot leave the ground.......2001-06-21

Rosario Ferré is one of my favorite writers. When I was a teenager, I went to a book store in San Juan and saw the Mexican edition of "Papeles de Pandora". I liked her picture very much. She looked smart and free. At that age that was reason enough, for me, to buy her book. I loved it. It was something very diferent from the books about colonialism, sugar cane and how much we Puerto Rican suffer because we are good people, that we read at school. She was something different. A new voice. Over the years I kept reading her, buying her books as soon as I saw them at the bookstores. I liked most of them, very much.

When I read in an interview that she was planing to publish a book about a Russian ballerina stock in San Juan, I said "great"

I just read the book. Not very interesting. The same old story, told in the same old way. The ballerina falling in love with the independentista in a back ground of political inestability. Worst than that, the characters lack resonance and the whole thing sounds like a B-class movie about revolution and love in the Caribbean. Too bad. I still think she can do better. Let us wait for her next proyect.

Accompanied by two other Federation starships, Picard and his fellow captains discover a bizarre menace of unimaginable power. And the only way to trap this destructive entity is to use the "Enterprise" as bait.

Boy did this sucker have potential. A planet that feeds off of intelligence. With a great title (and cover to boot), a very interesting plot, and Picard and Data as the main heros here, I thought there would be nothing to disappoint.

Diane Duane commences on a languid note, introducing her Holodeck motif immediately. She uses the Holodeck better in subsequent scenes. I've always loved comparing Picard, Captain of a Starship, to a captain of a seafaring vessel.

Two other starships are brought in to aid in tracking this mysterious shifting predator. That's about all the excitement that happens. Deaths are treated as nuisances. The dialogue is supremely dry and everyone speaks as if voiced as one person. Two attempts are made at humor, near the end of the book, and are devastatingly timed. When operating a starship under attack, succinctness, I should think, would be of the essence. The captain does not joke with (in this case) her XO while attempting evasive or offensive maneuvers. Perhaps this wouldn't have been so bad had the captain and her XO established a joking relationship earlier, but nary a word was spoken between them beforehand.

I highly recommend the well-written books of Michael Jan Friedman and Peter David over this contractual bilge.

                            4 out of 5 stars STNG #45 Intellivore - A fairly good read!.......2004-05-03

Given the immense popularity and overwhelming acclaim that author Diane Duane received for "Dark Mirror," my anticipation for this numbered Star Trek The Next Generation novel was pretty high. Upon reading it though, I found the book to be good but lacking in a few areas. While Diane Duane's usual good style of writing is there where the premise is clear and executed well and the pace is steady but the characterizations are off and the overall feel of "Intellivore" is that much goes unsaid which is quite unfortunate.

The cover art for this novel is pretty much standard fare for when the novel was published.

                            The Premise:

In true Star Trek fashion author Diane Duane takes the Enterprise into a no win situation when several ships and colonies mysteriously disappear into a Great Rift that is outside of Federation territory. Captain Picard leads the Enterprise and two other Federation starships to investigate this mystery and what they discover can only be described as epic in its scope...

                            What follows from there is a fairly good numbered novel in the STNG line that I would definitely recommend to any and all fans of good Star Trek fiction despite the minor faults I earlier described. {ssintrepid}

5 out of 5 stars Great writing but not spooky enough.......2004-02-02

The central plot for this book is more like something in the Original Series: the Enterprise encounters an interstellar monster and must destroy it. The author really created an epic foe for the Enterprise. Her writing is on her as usual high level. The descriptions of scenes and events are very clear. The action scenes are very clear and vividly described, and make for exciting reading. The language the characters use is a little strange though. This author just gets a bit too poetic when writing for the Next Generation crew. On a somewhat similar note, one flaw I found in this book was that the tension level, considering the magnitude of the enemy the Enterprise is facing and some of the things it does, was definitely lacking. Diane Duane showed in Dark Mirror that she could create a very tense, creepy atmosphere, but for some reason she neglected to do so here. Part of that flaw is her treatment of the monster's victims. Either they are people that we have little sympathy for, or their deaths are held at a distance from the reader, as though deliberately not to have too much impact. Instead, we get too little. On the plus side, this book also describes the lifestyle and some of the work of Starfleet's dedicated deep space explorers, which I found very interesting. All in all this is a very entertaining and well written book. A ghost story just should have been spookier, that's all.

                            4 out of 5 stars ST-TNG: Intellivore.......2003-03-25

Star Trek-The Next Generation: Intellivore written by Diane Duane is a mystery with the elememts of danger and the fight to live or die.

The book is set in the Great Rift between the Orion and Sagittaries arms of the galaxy where for some reason the star population is sparce and there is a reason for this. To solve the mystery and to find out why, the Federation sends Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise along with two other Starships on the expedition. Mystery abounds in this story and the ending will keep you on the edge of your seat.

For action-adventure you can't beat this book spiced with mystery and the peril of the Enterprise and all aboard is at stake.

It's an average Star Trek adventure here, but none the less a good one. I would say to any fan to buy this one. While not a keeper it's better than the one called Dyson's Sphere. Diane Duane always writes a solid story and this one is one of them.

Excellent book with great photos and genetics easily explained. Wish I had it when I was breeding a lot of horses. Using it just for info now but recommending it to a lot of people.

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-09-23

This is a good beginner guide to equine color genetics. If you do not have any background in color breeding, this is an excellent place to start. I do think that they leave out some technical information that is very relevant and important for in-depth study, but if you are a recreational horse owner interested in experimenting with color breeding, you will find everything you need in this book. On the other hand, if you are a geneticist, research scientist, horse breeder, or have extensive knowledge about genetics and breeding, this book is a bit too basic for your needs. A fun, informative, and casual read for recreational horse owners/breeders; not recommended for scientists or professional breeders.

I have studied Equine Genetics and done some research in the field, this book is my "pocket reference", it really lays out genetics in simple terms without taking away the important facts. I really have learned more about genetics of coat color than I did in my college class so that's got to be saying something. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know anything about horse coat color. It gives you a bunch of helpful facts.

                                Book Description

North Carolina is home to the only continuing pottery tradition in the United States outside the Native American tradition of the Southwest. Noted for this rich tradition from Seagrove to Pisgah, work produced here has earned the attention of collectors, artists, and visitors from around the globe. The collection of The Mint Museums in Charlotte, numbering more than 1,600 pieces, is considered the most comprehensive in any public institution. This volume catalogs more than four hundred individual pieces in the Museums' collection and includes five essays by authorities in the field of ceramics, providing a visual and textual guide to a vibrant living tradition.

Illustrated with hundreds of color photographs, the catalog includes descriptive entries on potters and potteries and details about individual pieces. These include traditional utilitarian wares from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, transitional or "fancy wares" made during the first half of the twentieth century, and contemporary objects. Displaying works from the four major pottery-producing areas of the state--Moravian settlements, Seagrove, the Catawba Valley, and the mountains--the collection tells the entire story of the North Carolina pottery tradition. Essays by collector and patron Daisy Wade Bridges, scholar Charles G. Zug III, gallery director Charlotte V. Brown, potter Mark Hewitt, and curator Barbara Stone Perry survey the history and significance of one of the state's best-known art forms.

5 out of 5 stars The Corporate Path to Nirvana.......2004-02-17

Judith Anderson shows how we can use our life experience in a business environment to know ourselves, what mental tendencies we have and how these affect ourselves and others. At first she advocates that we can do this to improve our performance and that of our company. And this is of course true. But for me it was even more valuable to have her illustrate that life offers us the learning material at the workplace so that we can understand ourselves and become aware of the effect of our actions. Therefore, The Path to Corporate Nirvana could as well have been called The Corporate Path to Nirvana.
In this book Judith Anderson (carefully) avoids using the word spiritual. The corporate setting of her book suggests that she primarily focuses on the business world. Having spent years on a spiritual path, looking for the secrets of life, and heaving learned to enjoy the process of learning about myself, I know how difficult it is to incorporate this process at work. This book showed me how do this.

Anderson hones in on and stays focused on the reality of the workplace neglected or left as a vague assumption in most business books - namely human nature. Anderson combines the comprehensions of an intuitive and highly experienced psychologist with a clear understanding of the dynamics of the workplace and the purpose of business.

I did not expect to enjoy this book as I am far from a new age person, and the title did not appeal to me. However, I was delighted with the unique out of the box perspective of the author. If you are a realist, you will find interest in this book.

5 out of 5 stars From cynicism to positive action.......2003-11-17

When I was first introduced to this book,I was put off by the title. The phrase "Corporate Nirvana" felt like an oxymoron and arose immediate cynicism in me. I thought, "Great, another step-by-step management book that tells me if I just do "A, B, and C" then "D, E,and F" will happen; and if "D, E, and F" don't happen, then obviously I have done "A, B, and C" wrong. Yet, because the person who gave me the book was someone I highly respected and trusted, I felt I needed to give the book a try. By the end of the first chapter, my cyncism quickly gave way to curiosity, appreciation, and hope.

Rather than "telling" me anything, Ms. Anderson shares her personal stories about nurturing and growing her Self in order to better nurture and grow others in the workplace. Her stories peeked my curiosity as I could see myself in similar situations. Was this what I was experiencing? Was this what others around me were experiencing? Are these the feelings that were driving the behaviors I or others exhibited? Was this how I was blocking my own and others success? I began to question "What place am I operating from? Who am I truly trying to serve? And why?"

I appreciated Ms. Anderson's willingness to make herself vulnerable to readers and to talk frankly about her fears--to describe them in detail--what they looked, sounded, and felt like, and the processes she used and continues to use to address them. Her descriptions and processes helped me to take action and start on my own journey of examining and addressing my fears and taking a frank look at how I enhance and hinder my own and others effectiveness in the workplace.

Ms. Anderson's book also gave me new found hope which continues to grow daily. Through her stories, I found new learning and new ways of being, which as I put into action, are getting different results--for both myself and my clients--moving all of us to greater success in the workplace--greater productivity, effectiveness, and self-satisfaction in the workplace. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in serving their clients better, producing greater results for their organization, developing a high-performance workforce, and bringing personal joy into the workplace and the work that one does.

5 out of 5 stars Corporate Nirvana's insights are for the real world.......2003-10-30

Corporate Nirvana was fascinating! My husband and I met at work in a corporate setting. After our children were born I left the corporate world. At first, I was attracted to Corporate Nirvana for what it might offer my husband in his corporate job. The more I read, the more the message hit home. I suspect that most marriages and basically all recurring interpersonal relationships face these same issues Ms. Anderson addresses in Corporate Nirvana.

When I left the corporate world I thought I could say good-bye to "PNVs (Popping Neck Veins)," but strong emotions don't just abide in the workplace. Now that I was not bringing home the paycheck I once had, I felt compelled to justify my existence (or, in Ms. Anderson's words, p. 125, "feel...worthy of recognition") in other ways. Whether it's working with a spouse or the significant others in your daily life to manage house repairs, engineer remodeling projects, finesse finances, delegate household chores or hire help, navigate social situations, bring up children, deal with school administrators, or run errands--there are endless opportunities in life for aggravation; and so there are also endless opportunities to be "AAA," "able to appreciate the usefulness of aggravation."

Corporate Nirvana showed me that by letting go of negative self judgments, I could put my ego in check, come from a place of wanting to be of service to others in my life, and develop the intuition to experience creative learning from the Spirit (all of which most recently led to this letter). Until Ms.Anderson's book I didn't have the paradigm to apply these principles consistently. Now with Corporate Nirvana, my sense of worth can be "attained independent of particular events, how projects turn out, or what results are accomplished." Thanks for the script!
