Life is Cheap.......2004-04-08
Althought the writing is decent, the story doesn't seem to go anywhere. Chat, Flirt, Hack, Die, Chat, Flirt, Hack, Die. Sorry, I hope I didn't spoil anything for anyone. If your looking for a bunch of sensational fights, you'll enjoy the book. If you want a little more depth, try one of his other books.
Where's the plot?.......2003-08-26
I've read almost all of Ed Greenwoods works and I really have to say that this series wins the cake on the worst one yet. It starts out with promise but the further you get in the book the more it seems to insult your intelligence. The main characters mainly go through the last one and the this one as well just fighting an endless host of people with swords and magic. Through pure luck they continually win and if they get beat someone comes along and saves them at the last minute. There is really no plot development and it gets way too mind numbing. I made the mistake of reading the next two out of boredom and kept hoping that something would happen. IT NEVER DID!!! Even if you love Ed Greenwood please avoid this series.
Amazing tale.......2001-09-10
This is a great novel. very suspenceful and adventurous. One of the best band of four novels that he has written. This one is defonetly better then the Kingless Land. It is solid combination of horror, suspence, and fantisy. A very good novel if you love fantisy.
Maybe I read a different book?.......2001-08-28
Even in lowbrow fantasy, there are some ground rules: you need to like the good guys, dislike the bad guys, and enjoy reading about the heroes using their strength, cleverness and/or innate goodness to triumph in the end. It also helps if there's a finite number of evil schemes going on--say, five. And if you're going to have over forty characters, you need to make sure they're very distinctive so that readers don't get confused and overwhelmed. In this book, on the other hand, the good guys are annoying, the bad guys are annoying, and the heroes go through each fight looking like Bill Gates in the boxing ring with Mike Tyson. It's hard to believe they could rescue a barn from an upset cow, let alone restore a kingdom...and apart from the fact that they're snarky with each other, why should we care about them at all? Maybe if we had more time to get to know them we'd care more, but the 'Dramatis Personae' (at the end of the book, and full of information and backstory that would've made this book less confusing if it'd been placed better) lists 96 characters. In a 319-page book, that works out to a new character every 3.32 pages. Why, why, why??? Oh, and the word 'whelm'? Get used to seeing it a LOT. It's as if the author gets a check from the Whelm Boosters of America every time he slips it in. This author's done better work--maybe it was because of a different editor, or maybe it was because he actually cared about the characters. This book feels to me like someone sitting down with the old notes of a D&D campaign he never actually took part in, and trying to make a book out of it.
A Itriging Sequel.......2001-08-17
I thought the Vacant Throne was a outstanding book. The way it picked up from the Kingless Land was most impressive. It even brought back old foes that made it even harder to put down. It became more darker in it's plot and showed a closer view of the barons in the land that made really interesting. The way the he had Embra and Hawkril coming closer together really got me excited. After all i would have to say this was a great sequel.

Customer Reviews:
Good book but recommends Juicers no longer available.......2007-04-08
The book is good and lots of easy recipes and great tips on how to prepare things to be juiced. The only problem is the book was written quite a long time ago and the juicers he recommends have long been discontinued. I researched other juicers by the same brand names of the ones he liked, but the on-line reviews of other juicers from those very same companies were often quite bad. Apparently companies who make juicers occasionally hit the jackpot and make a fantastic model once in a while, but their other models are not very good. Then, of course, as all companies do, they "improve" the fantastic model and mess it up completely, and it ends up being not very good at all. Why companies feel compelled to change a very good thing just for the heck of it I don't know, but many products are ruined after a couple years by being discontinued and replaced with a new model that is not half as good. So the book is very good to learn about juicing, but you're on your own to find a current, good brand of juicer.
Love It!!.......2006-03-11
The variety of juices specific for each disease is what I like best.
Love the Book--and Still Eat Meat, etc; great recipes, nutritional info.......2005-07-03
Hey--I am not a vegetarian, but sure appreciated this book for its multiple qualities and useful info:
a. recipes--main reason I got, combo ones as well as those under individual fruits and vegetables: even teenage son likes "Cruciferous Surprise" (even has broccoli and cabbage, and the surprise ingredient which "soothes" the flavor), which tastes better than its green color, and "Better Red than Dead" (carrot, beet and sweet potato) builds up sun protection, etcetc.. innovative, tasty
b. fruit and vegetable individual listings, such as carrots, apple, broccoli, listing nutritional components, vitamins, calories, benefits, as well as good tasty combinations for each
c. benefits of juicing, nutritional primer/info--this may be where some other readers were left cold, as they did not embrace what they perceived as author's vegetarian perspective/agenda. It is handy to read about why juicing (in combination with other food consumption) can be more beneficial than just munching raw or cooked veggies. Well, I am not a vegetarian, and sure still like meat and chocolate!...but one can take what one wants from the book, as in other matters in life. There is a section on juice fasting, as well, for those interested.
Of the several juicing books I had, I wound up actually using this repeatedly, and have given several copies, new and used when I can find them, away over the past couple of years.
Save your money.......2005-02-25
I have a couple of problems with this book. First of all, I can not stand books relating to health that push a vegetarian agenda. Now I know that the conventional meat packing industry is detrimental to the earth and cruel to the animals, but the conventional vegetable industry is just as detrimental to the earth and as cruel to plants. Plus, Michael Murray emphasizes using organic vegetables. Organic vegetables are 100% dependent on animals, because organic farms can not use synthetic fertilizers, thus they rely on tons and tons of animal manure. And if you own a working farm, which Michael does not, it is impossible to keep animals just for their manure. If you want to stay in business they better be making money for you in the form of animal products such as meat, yogurt, eggs, milk, butter, etc. If everyone became a vegetarian, like michael promotes, he would have a hard time finding his organic vegetables. Plus, many animal products that are raised correctly in accordance with the laws of nature, can be very beneficial to one's health, so why not have the best of both worlds. And I've heard the argument that if we used all that land that animals use to grow plant food, we could feed the world. We already have enough food in the world for 8 billion people. It's a matter of poverty, not needing space to grow food. And less meat farms mean less farms in general, which translate to housing developments and strip malls. Just as bad for the land and you. Also, some of Michael's other health claims are completely unfounded. He says one should cut back or eliminate salt from one's diet. This is absolutely untrue. There are certainly degrees of quality in salt, and celtic sea salt is the best, but salt plays a very important rule in a healthy diet. Why? Because it aids and promotes digestion, therefore helping your body use more vitamins and minerals from the food you eat.
So folks, research your juicers and buy the one that looks right to you. Buy fresh, organic fruits and vegetables to juice, and drink 8-24 ounces a day. Use as many different fruits and vegetables as you can, and apples and carrots mix well with everything. There you have it. Now put the money you would have spent on this book toward your brand new juicer.
great book fo jucing.......2004-09-14
I am increasing raw vegetable juice in my diet. The book is complete and a great reference especially if you want to add greens (parsley, cucumber, kale, etc) to juicing. I am juicing daily and feel energized throughout the day. I highly recommend this book and its fun to read.

Book Description
As anyone who has been captivated by the sounds of an evening outdoors knows, the nightly music of the woods can be a lovely but bewildering mix of hoots, croaks, howls, and grunts. This handy collection of field recordings and species descriptions helps you to identify the various members of the nocturnal chorus, from crickets and owls to otters, porcupines, and alligators. Illustrated with gorgeous pencil drawings and full-color photographs, it's the perfect complement to the sounds of the night. Includes an hour-long audio CD of the nighttime sounds of 60 animals.
Customer Reviews:
What goes bump in the night.......2007-04-29
If you live in the woods or country and are curious about what goes bump in the night, this book and CD will explain those noises. We kept hearing a wonderful creature but had no way to identify it. Turns out it was a screech owl (they don't hoot nor do they screech). This book has also helped identify several frogs & night birds. As a bonus, Lang has a very pleasant voice and the CD is well made.
Nice, but covers to large an area.......2006-01-12
It's nice to listen to in the car (for a while, at least). It's pretty useless, though, since the geographical area is not limited enough. There might be a couple of those 60 animals in your area, but about 50 of 'em won't be. This should be a series of CD's: one for the northeast, one for the southwest....and so on.
Soothing and informative.......2001-10-01
I love Lang Elliott's voice. It is very soothing and doesn't detract from the bird, reptile and insect sounds. I was able to identify a Horned Owl from the CD, so it is informative, too. The sounds are grouped on different tracks so it's easy to find the category you want, much better than a cassette tape.
Unique and wonderful nature guide by Lang Elliott.......2000-03-29
This is a truly special release from Lang Elliott, the author of numerous nature CDs and books (including the splendid "Music of the Birds" and "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs.") On this compact disc (or cassette) and its accompanying booklet, he introduces the sounds of common North American night animals. To my knowledge, no one else has compiled a field guide to the sounds of night animals with sounds from many groups of creatures all in one place (i.e., birds, mammals, amphibians, etc.)
The recording is a constant delight and will probably make you aware of the source of many sounds you have heard but not identified before. Don't be surprised to say, "So THAT'S what that is" many times while listening to the tape or CD. Also be prepared for surprises. Think you hear cats fighting outside your window at night? They may be cats, but they also could be raccoons, which often sound remarkably like angry felines. That strange, ghostly hiss or scream you may have heard at night in the country? An angry cat perhaps, but it might be a barn owl. And there are many other special sounds identified here: the rhythmic calls of nightjars like the whippoorwill, the trills and croaks of amphibians, the surprisingly snort of the white-tailed deer.
If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you must have this guide. Take it on a camping trip with you, if you have a portable CD player or cassette player. Those night woods will not seem so forbidding anymore once you know that most of the time, the strange and fascinating sounds you hear are made by completely harmless creatures.
Book Description
The authors of Fostoria Stemware have just finished an all-new book on Fostoria, this time focusing on tableware. Over 125 full-colour photos and more than 100 original Fostoria catalog pages, some in colour, appear in this complete guide. Thirty-one pages devoted solely to the North American pattern and an entire section on decorations, many of which have not previously been shown or identified, will make this book a page-turner.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, Informative and Beautiful.......2003-08-07
Lots of color pictures, catalog illustrations, and other reproduction of old Fostoria documents and ads make this the most detailed and comprehensive book I've found on Fostoria glassware from this period. It really increased my understanding of the importance of glass making in American history, and my appreciation for the talent and hardwork that went into making each piece of glassware an object of lasting beauty. The large number of pictures really helped identify pieces in my collection, and I use this book regularly when buying and selling Fostoria glass.
Dates can be misleading.......2001-02-28
This is an exceptionally detailed book, but the dates can be misleading. Some patterns produced during the 1924-1943 time period are not included in this volume. My pattern (Colony)is in the 1944-1986 volume (as well as Raleigh, Coronet and part of others) due to limited space in the first volume. If you are looking for one specific pattern, do some research to be sure you are buying the correct book.
Lovely and Complete Reference on Fostoria.......2000-01-22
This book has become an essential tool in my glassware business. It is very comprehensive in its listings of the various Fortoria patterns and the pictures are extremely clear and helpful. The catalog inserts are especially interesting and useful. The research and love that went into the production of this book is evident in its helpful format. Browsing through this book is a joy!
A "must have" for all Fostoria collectors & dealers!!!.......1999-04-08
This is absolutely the most beautiful and thorough book on Fostoria I have ever seen. It shines light on some of the mysteries and nuances in Fostoria production. It is a well organized, yet detailed reference which includes a large array of photographs, Fostoria advertising pieces and catalog pages along with an extensive listing of pieces and patterns, production dates and 1999 pricing. This is a great book for the new or seasoned collector and dealers. If you buy or sell Fostoria, you should buy this book!
A First-Rate Reference.......1999-04-03
This book is not only an excellent reference for Fostoria's Golden Years, but it is also a beautiful book. Highly recommended for all Fostoria lovers.

Product Description
Epics of Sumerian Kings presents for the first time both the authoritative Sumerian text and an elegant English translation of four key epics from the Sumerian literary canon. These epics, the earliest known in any language, revolve around the conflict between the cities of Uruk (biblical Erech) in ancient Iraq and Aratta in neighboring Iran. Of special interest is Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta, which contains the story of the confounding of human language, often cited as a source of the biblical tower of Babel narrative, as well as the Sumerians own account of the invention of cuneiform writing. In addition to providing English translations of the epics, Vanstiphout discusses their intellectual and cultural context, their poetics and meaning, and the significance of the epic cycle as a whole. The volume will interest scholars and students of Assyriology and the ancient Near East, biblical scholars, and general readers and will be a valuable text for courses on ancient Near Eastern literature or history.
Customer Reviews:
Good Resource.......2007-01-04
This book is a great resource for these texts. It includes transliterations for all of them, which is extremely helpful. The translation is pretty accessible to readers unfamiliar with the Sumerian language, although there are some nuances that are missed (as often happens in translation). Still worth the price.

This well-documented biography by Karl Evanzz of The Washington Post shows how a poor, Georgia-born mulatto preacher and laborman named Elijah Poole, who moved to Detroit in the 1930s to escape the brutality of the South, reinvented himself as the leader of the controversial Nation of Islam. Evanzz sifts through years of rumors and myths to uncover a proud and politically shrewd demagogue whose frail, asthma-prone body contrasted his fiery antiwhite rhetoric and proclamations of black self-reliance. "To millions of African Americans," Evanzz writes, "Elijah Muhammad was not so much a prophet as a self-schooled psychoanalyst who, like the highly celebrated Sigmund Freud, advanced theories about the nature and role of religion and race in mental dysfunction."
Painstaking research reveals how Muhammad synthesized the philosophies of Marcus Garvey and Booker T. Washington, as well as updating tenets of Freemasonry and the Moorish Science Temple to create the Nation's dogma. Evanzz also recounts Muhammad's imprisonment for draft dodging, one of many run-ins with law enforcement, and his efforts to build schools for the children of his followers. Among the biographical details uncovered with the help of recently declassified FBI files is the identity of Muhammad's greatest teacher, the mysterious W.D. Fard, as well as confirmation of the many children Muhammad fathered out of wedlock. The FBI files also add insight into the treachery, distrust, and violence that gripped the Nation after the 1965 assassination of Muhammad's former second-in-command, Malcolm X. By and large, Evanzz presents a fair, scholarly account of one of the 20th century's most infamous and influential Afro-American figures. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
Drawn from recently declassified FBI files, and interviews with family members and former apostles,
The Messenger renders a daring portrait of one of African-American history's most controversial leaders.
In this explosive biography, investigative journalist Karl Evanzz recounts the multidimensional life of a semiliterate refugee from the Jim Crow South who became the influential founder of the Nation of Islam. Considered the "Prophet" by his followers and a threat to national security by J. Edgar Hoover, Elijah Muhammad moved four million African Americans to convert to his heterodox version of Islam, and inspired the lives of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jesse Jackson, and Louis Farrakhan. But his increasingly insatiable hunger for power ultimately led Elijah Muhammad down a path of corruption, ultimately betraying his teachings and his devoted believers by womanizing, fathering thirteen illegitimate children, and abetting in the murders of those who criticized him, not least of whom, his chief disciple, Malcolm X.
Customer Reviews:
Insightfull and well researched.......2007-07-31
Sometime ago, I decided to writte a book about the Black Muslims of America, but, being french, I knew little about Black nationalism in the United States. Reading Evanzz was a gold mine that provided many insights on the Black muslims ; It is also so wide ranging and alludes to so many aspects of Black nationalism it is the perfect entrance door for that political aspect of the US black community.
During my own research for the FBI archives as well as with local US newspaper ranging from 1930 to 1975, I was able to cross check and verify many information he provides : they were allways accurate. While he sometimes only alluded to acts of anti-white racism that seemed very important to me (the Zebra Killings for instance) I give him credit for mentionning them. He left no stone unturned.
Evanzz Book is a thick, dense read. It should not be read as a novel but rather as an encyclopedia. Maybe my only critic is that he's a bit too fond of Malcolm X
Sad, Misleading.......2006-09-30
That is all the author did was take declassified FBI records and wrote a book. Most of which the information about WD FARD and Elijah Muhammad were contradictory. Wish I had the time to elaborate. He should be ashamed of writing such. Sad.
An Unprofessional, Bias, Mis-Informative Writing.......2005-01-25
Of all the literature I've read concerning the Elijah Muhammad, this is by far the worse. After only two chapters, it becomes obvious that Evanzz developed his analysis of Muhammad and the N.O.I. based upon data presented by the FBI, CIA, New York and Detroit police. Where are the interviews with Muhammad's family, friends, and business associates? Where are the excerpts from any of Muhammad's dozens of books? Where are the accounts from present or former N.O.I. members? Instead this book presents references from government agencies as indisputable fact. Anyone familiar with the clandestine workings of such agencies during the 1950's and '60's (i.e. "CoIntelPro") would surely be suspicious of such "information", and at least attempt to seek out other sources. Evanzz's account fails to make such an attempt and is so one-sided, that it offers the reader no opportunity to intelligently analyze Elijah Muhammad, his organization or those who followed him. This book is closer to "National Enquirer" material, than it is to informative, responsible journalism. Anyone interested in a well-written, balanced account of Elijah Muhammad and the history of the N.O.I., I recommend "An Original Man" by Claude Andrew Clegg III. It's a brilliant work and far superior to Evanzz slanderous writing. Don't waste your time or money.
Very interesting, insightful bio.......2004-06-15
Karl Evanzz wrote a fascinating account of how power corrupts in "The Messenger: The Rise and Fall of Elijah Muhammad." Evanzz supported his biography of the man responsible for the enormous growth of the Nation of Islam with almost 200 pages of documentation. However, he clearly lost all objectivity toward the second half of the book. Yet, I found this true story to be a compelling one worth reading.
