5 out of 5 stars Amazon Warrior - hear her roar!!!.......2003-07-15

Excellent read. Having read the entire series as a teenager searching for identity, it served to shape my independence and confidence. The Jalav series contrasts the issue of women in a female dominated society with women in a male dominated society and all it's primitive pitfalls. In the end, proving how strong women really are.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Maturing viewpoint of a "primitive" female........1998-03-17

Enough with the sex! Although Ms. Green's books do deal frankly with a highly sexual content, there is much more to her storytelling than mere erotica. While compared to "Xena" and "Gor" characters, the Jalav chracter struggles with real empathic and moralistic struggles (in between the graphic sex), as well as questioning her own role in society vs. the larger culture that the character is exposed to in her travels. This is a "must read" series for anyone interested in an individual's struggle to stand up for what one believes in and how one lives one's life.

3 out of 5 stars Xena with sex.......1997-04-06

Part of the Jalav series. Jalav is a warrior queen like Xena on TV, that periodically finds herself captured and forced to be a sex slave

As the bloody tide of war spread over Gor, Tarl Cabot, outcast by the Priest-Kings, became deeply enmeshed in the military combat between the empire of Ar and the invaders from Cos. His fate would depend upon which proved victorious in the coming confrontation at Ar's besieged river port. And it looked like Tarl himself might prove the deciding factor that would tip the scales of destiny for one side or the other... With Renegades of Gor, all the complexity and intrigue of John Norman's saga comes together to create an adventure replete with danger, excitement, and romance in the unforgettable realm of Gor---where courage remains meaningful, and pride and honor have never been forgotten.

        5 out of 5 stars Tarl Cabot - Renegade.......2000-02-03

In the midst of some wordy Norman novels comes "Rengades of Gor". Action from start to satisfying finish. Our hero very much himself and doing things the way he does them because he IS Tarl Cabot. All of this set amidst the seige of Ars Station, with Norman providing the the well researched details his books have been known for. Personally, I rank this one right up there with Nomads, Raiders, and Explorers. Set among a long winded series ... Renegades is a return to the glory days.

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Muffins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-09-02

All I can say is WOW!! I can't recommend this book enough! Recipes are easy to follow, no fancy-smancy never heard of before ingredients and best of all; most recipes only make 12 muffins. So for people that don't have an army to feed, it's nice! I recommend the awesome Blackberry muffins, which are my favorite to make. Every recipe I've tried has come out great, and the muffins freeze well too. BUY the book, you won't be dissapointed! Happy baking :)

              5 out of 5 stars Muffin Heaven!!!.......2007-06-14

No hard-to-source ingredients. No are-they-cooked-are-they-raw musings while you stare into the oven. No only-use-these-fruits-picked-by-the-light-of-a-full-moon pernickityness. Just straightforward instructions, delightful ingredients and splendid results. My favourites are the Cheddar Cheese Muffins - because my sons don't eat cheese so my husband and I can relax eating them - and the Cinnamon-Buttermilk Muffins which are especially wonderful for breakfast. Buy this for everyone you know who has even the tiniest interest in baking. Deirdre, Dublin, Ireland.

              5 out of 5 stars For Amateurs.......2007-01-13

I never so much as picked up a spatula before I bought this book so I can say as the ultimate rookie that this book will give you excellent results. The recipe's are easy and the instructions are coherent. My only complaint would be that I often was a bit surprised at the consistency of the batter. I would have liked a description beyond "slightly lumpy" to know what to expect. I love this book and have bought another from the series.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a morning sugar fix!.......2006-11-01

Of the countless cookbooks I own, this book has the best compilation of breakfast quick breads. Nearly every recipe sounds and looks so good! The ones I've tried I would definitely make again, and I have every intention of working my way through nearly all the sweet recipes and a couple of the savory ones as well. The book is well laid out, every recipe is accompanied by a beautiful picture, and the instructions are simple. If you like to satisfy your sweet tooth in the morning, as I do, then this is the book for you!

              5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-07-20

This is my favorite go to cookbook for prep ahead breakfast. The recipes are delicious every time. And, when guests arrive I don't have to worry 'Will the recipe turn out'.

There are more than just muffins in the book. There are breads and coffee cakes. As I type this I am eating the Spiced Apple Coffee Cake. The recipes aren't complicated. In fact, they are very simple and call for ordinary ingrediants. But, who would have thought that you could make a muffin that tastes like a dognut! Williams Sonoma did, and it does. The secret ingrediant? Buttermilk.

Other favorites of mine in the book are the rasberry muffins, the jam filled muffins, the chocolate chip muffins, and the pear muffins. I have used the batter for the rasberry muffins with many other fruits - one of our favorites is peaches. This books gives you an awesome base and you can mix and match and get creative without worry! I made my sister a batch of the cherry muffins with the coconut topping and plan on baking more when she delivers her first child...

Excellent for a beginner and tasty enough for the expert cook.

This book is excellant for the study of anatomy of all mamals. The pictures were very desciptive and the text helped to explain things alittle. The book doubled as a coloring book if one chose to use it as such to help reinforce where things were located. The only thing I wished it had was information on birds.

5 out of 5 stars The cutting edge in clay...........2001-07-14

CERAMICS, WAYS OF CREATION is a highly informative look at 36 contemporary artists who are "pouring" ceramics, working with the wheel, and molding various kinds of clay. I don't know if these artists are the best in the world, or who could possible determine that, but all the artists depicted are working in America, and most seem to have acquired a M.F.A. and some recognition among peers and critics.

Probably the most valuable aspect of CERAMICS is the light it sheds on the contempory ceramics work scene. The artists seem to be fairly representative of their art/craft. Porcelain and raku, organic and inorganic, poured, molded, pressed and pinched, utilitarian and nonutilitarian, spritual and irreverent, functional and disfunctional are represented.

For example, Ray Strassberg's Holocaust vision and David MacDonald's African pots and calabashes are opposite ends of the life-death spectrum. Wayne Higby's beautiful and evocative "Lake Powell Memory-Rain" is somewhere in-between. Virginia Scotchie's "Vera's Garden" of stylized ceramic plants as big as the artist regenerate her memory of life as a child on her grandparents farm. The metaphysical "Primal Courage" of Joanne Hayakawa shows a stiff backbone (skeleton and pelvis) and Peter Pinnell brings the reader back to teatime with his wonderful teapots.

Each section contains a short biography of the artist and discusses themes, types of clay, modeling techniques, firing temperatures, tempura, and other aspects of the creative process. The book also contains an appendix of terms. Probably not technical enough for the ceramics artist, but a wonderful book for those who are thinking of taking up the craft and want to appear semi-literate at the local art center.

4 out of 5 stars Ceramics Ways of Creation.......2000-04-22

Ceramics Ways of Creation provides a refreshing venue for currently practicing ceramic artists to explain their processes, description of materials and methods, motivations and philosophies of purpose. Ample colorful illustrations expose the substance of each artist's work. This is an "inside peek" at what makes our contemporary ceramics scene "tick". Each artist is unique but a common love of the clay medium unites them.

Lovely, light-infused photographs fill Candles: Elements of the Table, which is divided into three sections: "Glowing" covers the lore, magic, and history of candles; "Enhanced" exhibits candlesticks, containers, and the use of candles in celebrations; and "Placed" displays candles on the table, in both traditional and innovative ways. There are some striking touches, such as a metal food grater used as a luminaria and a grouping of pear-shaped candles burning in a golden compote. More about using than making candles, this pretty book shows how candles enhance our tables, rooms, and lives.

                  Book Description

Sometimes the simplest of ideas create the most memorable moments. All it takes is a little inspiration.

Everything -- and everyone -- looks better by candlelight, and no artificial light can match the enveloping warmth of candles. The simple act of sharing a meal while watching candlelight flicker in the eyes of those we care about is one of life's purest pleasures, while the almost magical power of fire is evidenced in the way we call sweethearts "flames" and ritually light candles to welcome the sacred at Hanukkah and Advent.

Whether you choose dozens of stubby votives, two shapely hurricanes or a landscape of hand-rolled beeswax cylinders, candle soothe our eyes and minds, welcome guests and strike the mood.

Filled with innovative ideas and inspiring full-color photos, Candles  offers a wealth of ways to use candles in settings both simple and grand, classical and contemporary. It reveals the infinite variety of candle sizes, colors, scents and shapes available today and provides dozens of creative suggestions for personalizing and enhancing this integral element of a captivating table.

When the candles have dimmed, the guestssatisfied and the napkins tossed back on the table, some settings demand to be lingered at.

Everyone who entertains knows that setting a lovely table sets the stage for memorable dining and is every bit as important as what is served. That's why the Elements of the Table  series explores the magic that can be created with the basic components of the table: candles, linens, centerpieces, china, glassware and silver.

Candles lights the way, offering elegant inspiration for bringing the gentle, celebratory intimacy of candles to your table at romantic dinners for two, festive parties, spontaneous gatherings of friends or anytime you want to create an unforgettable occasion.

                          Book Description

                          Now in Paperback

"A truly marvelous book. Braun welds together fresh insights and impeccable scholarship, and expresses both with clarity and grace . . . while establishing original, now unbreakable connections between the art and architecture of the ancient Americas and the arts of the modern era. I learned something new on every page."-Pete Hamill

Until this trailblazing 1993 book, now reissued in paperback, much attention had been given to the connection between modern art and indigenous African forms, while pre-Columbian sources of modern art had been largely unexplored. Correcting this oversight, Barbara Braun offers an in-depth look at Paul Gauguin, Frank Lloyd Wright, Diego Rivera, Henry Moore, and Joaqun Torres Garca and the pre-Columbian forms that provided inspiration for their art, dramatizing the often surprising comparisons in over 300 striking illustrations. Together with an overview of more recent artists who continue to be indebted to ancient American forms and ideas, this "groundbreaking, exciting study fills a major gap in our understanding of modern art."-Publishers Weekly

BARBARA BRAUN, scholar, author, and literary agent, has written many articles for such publications as ART-news, Art in America, Connoisseur, the Village Voice, and Publishers Weekly (where she was art publishing correspondent). Her recent books include Arts of the Amazon. She lives in New York City.
