It takes considerable skill to craft a gripping novel approaching 300 pages in which nothing much happens during the first 150. Fortunately for the readers of Norman Green's first book, Shooting Dr. Jack, Green's got the knack, in spades. His characters aren't drawn, they're acid-etched. His landscape, seamlessly rendered, is a gray, emotionless void:

Fall through the cracks of a better and kinder world, and you find yourself on Troutman Street. Dreams of a new world die in her sweatshops, cars and trucks die in her chop shops and junkyards, children die in her vacant lots, shooting one another for the right to sell crack on the two or three big intersections, junkies die wherever they happen to be when they shoot up--hallways, alleys, parking lots.

Tommy Rosselli, a.k.a. Fat Tommy, a.k.a. Tommy Bagadonuts, is a relatively brilliant entrepreneur who, while largely operating beyond the law, nonetheless owns a good and honest heart. Stoney, Tommy's brutal partner in a shady Brooklyn junkyard, is a smoldering alcoholic struggling to bring his body, soul, wife, and kids into some approximation of normalcy. And 18-year-old Eddie Tuco, an illiterate "Nuyorican" who works for Tommy and Stoney, faces temptation, redemption, and loss as a result.

Tommy and Stoney need to find out who left two dead teenagers in the junkyard, who killed their accountant, who ambushed Tommy in his apartment, who's been shadowing their employees, and why. Tuco does too, but he's got some demons to wrestle and scores to settle on his own. Rounding out this vision of desperation are the eponymous Dr. Jack--the name of both a drug and its dealer, which affect their users as Dr. Kevorkian affects his patients--and the junkyard's blighted Troutman Street landscape itself.

Not a mystery in the truest sense and not a thriller by most standards, Shooting Dr. Jack is both of those things and more. It's intelligent, it grabs like a vice in due course, and its dialogue and narrative resonate with urban grit and truth. --Michael Hudson

Book Description

Violence is no stranger to Brooklyn's Troutman Street, a place where whores, junkies, businesses, cars, and dreams go to die. But here, in a junkyard on Troutman Street, three men search for redemption.

Stoney wakes up with a hangover every morning. He loves his family, but they're terrified of him. One more DWI and he'll do time that he can't afford. His partner Tommy would run their "business" right into the ground -- or make them a fortune; no way to tell which.

Tommy Roselli, a.ka. "Fat Tommy," a.ka. "Tommy Bagadonuts" knows the best restaurants in New York and how much to tip the maÎtre d' in each one. He knows who to call if he really wants you sleeping with the fishes. If you met Tommy, you'd remember him. But he'd remember you, your phone number, your wife's name, and what his chances with her are.

Tuco has a gift, one that will come in handy for Stoney and Tommy when people start dying on Troutman Street. But as he learns to use it -- struggling to walk the line between family, friends, and the law -- he almost forgets the first rule of Troutman Street: Watch your back.

5 out of 5 stars A good first novel.......2005-02-11

I ended up reading Green's three books in the reverse chronological order in which they were written ... this is his first book and the last one that I read.

I'm a big fan of Green's ... and like this book almost as well as his last.

Like the other two, this has a good plot and interesting characters. While you don't feel much sympathy for the characters at the beginning, they grow on you and by the end you're wholly engaged.

Not a mystery ... but a good suspense novel and a great character study. I'm only sorry that his fourth book hasn't been released!

1 out of 5 stars I gave up after 100 pages and 3 tries.......2004-05-31

It didn't have anything to keep my interest. Maybe you have to live in NYC to like it.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshingly terse.......2002-08-08

This is an engrossing short novel that has at least two things going for it -- a sense of authenticity and economical writing. The plot has been summarized in other reviews; so I need not go into that.

4 out of 5 stars A great first novel!.......2002-03-10

This is a book that really captures the heart of the New York underworld. Gritty and quirky, with deep and sometimes likeable characters that jump right off the page. If you liked Sleepers, Underboss or even the Sopranos, this is a book you should definitely read. The characters aren't slick, "Hollywood" mobsters, but real people whom you'll find yourself reluctantly cheering for in the end.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding First Book.......2002-03-09

Shooting Dr. Jack is an excellent first novel for Norman Green. The book's characters come to life with Green's detailed descriptions. His ability to describe characters, places and events is a rarity in todays books, and you feel as if his characters are actual people walking the streets of Brooklyn. Once I started this novel and got to know these characters I could not put it down. I can't wait for Norman Green's second book, I am sure it will be full of more detailed and memorable characters, and surprises.

3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

After this, this particular Hawkman series starts its slow decline, and not so slow cancellation. However, the Hawkman series with Johns writing and what he came up with is definitely worth a look, particularly for the relationship between the characters, and his brutality in the bits where he is actually fighting, making him somewhat different than the other heroes, rather than just a generic flying guy.

5 out of 5 stars Just A Tad Short Of Perfection; Still Extremely Powerful.......2007-03-15

The first thing that should be pointed out about "Hawkman: Wings Of Fury" is that, while the previous volume ("Enemies & Allies") reprinted #s 7 - 12 of the 2002 ongoing, this volume inexplicably skips #s 13 & 14 and starts with # 15, reprinting that issue through # 22. Perhaps the other issues are in another collection somewhere or perhaps they're only available in their original form. Nevertheless, those issues are the ones that follow up the cliffhanger from the end of the Enemies & Allies collection, and have some major revelations in them, so I'd recommend tracking those two down before reading the issues in "Wings Of Fury". They're excellent, and usually not too difficult to find.

Moving on to the Trade Paperback in question, # 15 kicks off the three-part arc 'The Thanagarian', the first storyline in the 2002-onwards ongoing to tie in the Hawk history from the late80s/90s - the Katar Hol (Thanagar's version of Hawkman)/Shayera Thal (Hawkwoman, from Thanagar)/Hawkworld aka. the planet Thanagar, etc. - into the current status quo with the reborn versions of the original Hawks. Although this arc is clearly one of the weaker ones in recent years's Hawk history, it's still an exciting, imaginative and rewarding tale with its own standard of excellence; by saying all that I guess I'm showing how high I feel the overall bar on the Hawkman books of this era has been set. In normal circumstances it would have seemed amazing, but there's a noticeable drop-off from #s 1-14, mostly involving an inconstistency with Hawkman himself. I know Carter has an unusually high level of loyalties toward his allies and friends, but it seemed uncharacteristic for him to be so condoning and unfazed by the recklessly destructive actions of one of his colleagues. It's not like he's letting anyone get away with murder, and I know there's a very definate savage side and a tendency towards impulsiveness within Hawkman himself, but something about the situation in question just didn't ring true. Apart from that, 'The Thanagarian' is a fine arc, drwaing multiple elements from the '90s Hawkman stories skillfully enough to provide a real treat for all of us who enjoyed that era of the Hawk mythos in addition to the current one. The art, as usual, is tremendous - detailed, expressive, and dynamic, and enlivened by some of the best coloring work in comics coutesy of John Kalisz.

Hawkman 18 & 19 are both single-issue stories, which you can't really say too much about in a writeup like this without giving everything away. No. 18, while not set in the past like Hawkman # 7, is similar in tone to the 'Past Lives' story presented there in that it delves again into the area of past incarnations of the series's characters, this time focusing of Carter's past life as Koenraad Von Grimm in centuries-ago Germany. Unfolding both in brief flashbacks to that time and in the present frame during Carter's stay in the city where he once lived, it's a powerful, emotion-driven story that adds even more depth to the continuing Hawk saga. José Luis Garcia-Lopez steps in as guest artist and gives a unique look to the story that well captures the historical feel. Scot Eaton and Ray Kryssing step in as guest penciler and guest inker for # 19 and bring some wickedly cool looks to the characters. Number nineteen brings Black Adam into the pages of Hawkman (as well as another, more surprising-to-see character who's captured excellently by Eaton and Kryssing). This issue fits in with the recurring issues over in "JSA" where they were building up with Black Adam into a major storyline, one that would reach its culmination in the "Black Reign" event (available in Trade Paperback under the JSA banner). Excellent issue in its own right, excellent issue as part of a longer, gradually developing plot in the JSA and Hawkman ongoings.

Regular artists Rags Morales and Michael Bair return for the 3-part "Headhunter" saga. The Headhunter is a new character expressly created for the purpose of becoming one of Hawkman's great perpetual arch-enemies (like Lex Luthor for Superman or The Joker for Batman, for example) and the character gets off to a great start. He's a mysterious, vicious killer who's got some really different things going on; he seems like the kind of being a horror movie could center around, or who would stalk through the pages of a horror anthology like Vertigo's "Flinch". A great foil for Hawkman who, along with Hawkgirl, are continuing throughout this whole collection to be defined as two of the main pillars of the DC Universe. The "Headhunter" arc also sees a 'cutting-loose' kind of event that the series has been feeling like it could erupt since day one. One small glitch in the story with the timing is its only flaw, in a scene where the police outside should be rushing a building but inexplicably don't, just to give two characters a chance to have a verbal confrontation that should have taken place at a different spot in the tale. Apparantly, though, there wasn't room, and it got squeezed in where it didn't fit. This kind of thing doesn't happen often in Hawkman, and it doesn't happen often in anything writer Geoff Johns is penning, but it managed to slip in here. A minor quibble, overall.

And overall, the verdict on "Wings Of Fury" is that it drops a tad below the previous two Hawkman Trade Paperbacks, but is still a whopping good volume, probably a nine or 9.5 on a scale of ten. The stuff in these Hawk collections is some of DC's most essential reading.

      2 out of 5 stars Yuckie Yuckie.......2006-02-22

I loved Hawkman as a child growing up in the 60's. he was my favorite member of the JLA. I got this book to share some memories with my 8 year old but beheadings are a little too gross for me. I guess I'll try to find a Classic Anthology with some reprints from a simplar time.

      3 out of 5 stars Hmm...ok.......2005-08-09

Whilst the prequel Endless Flight provides the reader with a cliffhanger which drives you to pick this one up, the end result doesnt do justice.

In some twisted way, WOF falls short of the mystery cum action that usually gives Hawkman readers the buzz that they love so very much.

And what's the deal with Kendra? Are they back together or not?

4 out of 5 stars Solid enough, but not as good as the previous two volumes (or JSA)........2005-08-05

It's been said that as a comics writer Geoff Johns can do no wrong, and "Wings of Fury" will do nothing to dispell that belief. It is, however, a step below Johns' best work on the Hawkman character. The primary problem is that Johns begins a deconstruction of the character (a storyline which continued even after the writer left the book). But Hawkman has had the most screwed-up continuity in comics for a generation. It was only through a herculean effort in the JSA series from which Hawkman spins off that Johns was able to straighten it all out. And now, he is tearing it back down within just a few years? That makes no sense.

On another note, the book suffers a bit from the loss of series regular Rags Morales, who totally redefined Hawkman's look in the first two volumes.

The highlight is a guest appearance by Black Adam, which serves as a prequel of sorts to the excellent JSA: Black Reign trade.

      RECOMMENDED.

My son was so taken by the Alistair stories that even at age 11 he reads them often. Ok, too easy for an 11 year old, but he still loves them, and it's become a tradition for me to read Alistair in Outer Space to him at least once a month. I had to buy three of them used (and expensive!) but it was well worth it! Don't miss any of these books!

5 out of 5 stars It makes me laugh!.......2002-07-25

My son, Alistair, received this well-read book from his cousins when he was too young to appreciate it. We just unearthed it a couple of months ago and it gets just as many laughs from both of us each time we read it. I wish all the Alistair books were more available--not only because of the common name, but because of the great humor for both adults and kids. It is a rare gift for an author to be able to incorporate humor that is appreciated by the children and on a whole different level by the adults who read the stories to them.

I used to work in a great italian restaurant. One of the books from the chef's library that stood out was this one. It has great recipes. Very true to the food. Close your eyes. Pick a recipe. Make it and its a hit!
I am one that LOOOOVES to "twik" recipes. With this book, there is no need.

This is a fantastic book. At first glance I set it aside as it looked labor-intensive, but as I tried it out I've had nothing but great results. Most recipies involve a *lot* of overall time and work, especially getting some of the ingredients (hard to find veal neck bones) but so far worth it!

            4 out of 5 stars Handmade Pastas.......2006-04-09

            Delicious.

I adore this book. I love sitting down just to read the histories and evolutions of dishes. And I love the actual recipes I've made so far from it.

But most importantly, I've learned not to be afraid to make homemade pastas thanks to Kasper's easy conversational style.

The pasta doughs are simple and forgiving, and the pastas are delicious, filling, and a huge cost and nutrition savings compared to packaged.

5 out of 5 stars No serious kitchen should be without this book!.......2006-03-24

My wife is a food professional and we eat very well at home. She mentioned this book after our trip through Tuscany & Umbria earlier this year and I bought it as a gift for her. Wish that we'd had it years ago! The Bolognese sauce alone is worth the price! I do not personally use the cookbook but have been hearing raves about the content - both recipes and general information about this region in Italy. This is very high praise from my hard-to-please retired teaching chef wife.

5 out of 5 stars The very best regional Italian cookbook! Buy It!.......2005-07-27

`The Splendid Table' by Lynne Rossetto Kasper is simply the most splendid book I have read on a regional cuisine and it is by far and away the best of the three books on the cuisine of Emilia-Romagna, even though the other two, `Biba's Taste of Italy' by Biba Caggiano and `Recipes from My Two Villages' by Mario Batali are excellent, as far as they go. Ms. Caggiano's book is simply a collection of recipes from Emilia-Romagna and Mario's book is more of a personal diary of recipes than a thorough examination of a historical cuisine.

Ms. Kasper's book, in the year it was published, won both the James Beard and Julia Child (IACP) cookbook awards, which is roughly the same as winning both the Academy award and the Foreign Press Writers award for best picture. And, I believe this book deserved all the attention it has received. Even Mario, who has his own book on the subject, made a special point to mention this book on his `Molto Mario' show. Since I have owned the book for over a year, it is one of those cases where I deeply regret having taken so long to get to studying the volume.

All that remains, then, is to point out what it is which makes the book so good.

For starters, it covers every aspect of a region's cuisine. That is, it deals with the history, the agriculture, and the economy of the region as well as the great recipes. And, what a background we have to relate. Emilia-Romagna is not just another region in one of the world's great culinary countries. It is THE very heart and soul of that culinary tradition, even more than the fabled provinces of Tuscany (Florence) in the north and Campagna (Naples) in the south. It is the home of Italy's three most important non-wine food products, Proscuitto de Parma, Parmesano-Reggiano, and Balsamic Vinegar. On top of that, it is also the home of some of the most famous fresh pasta dishes to come out of Italy plus several of the most famous salume products from Italy (witness the name Bologna, the region's capital city, given to some of these products).

While this coverage is necessary for a complete book on this subject, it is not enough. And, this book gives us the most important component, an excellent selection of very well written recipes. And, with over five hundred pages to fill, Ms. Kasper has given us several different takes on many of the more interesting recipes. A fine example is the famous ragu Bolognese, which is offered up in at least six different variations, each for a slightly different purpose or from a different background.

Never having studied this northern (generally tomatoless) sauce in detail before, I am struck by how similar it is to the most common recipes for Texas chili. It has no beans, the meat is diced and browned, not ground, and tomato and other spices are added sparingly. In the place of dried chiles, the ragu includes cinnamon (in several of the more traditional recipes). One very odd facet of these recipes is that where a Bay leaf is specified, the author calls for the California bay leaf rather than the milder Turkish bay leaf.

The recipes are organized like all good Italian cookbooks, by course. The chapters are:

            The Antipasto Course
            Ragus
Essential Sauces and Stocks (In no other book have I seen such a thorough treatment of Italian broths and stocks. Ms. Kasper includes the simple traditional `brodo' but adds much more, highlighted by the rich `Il sugo de carne' or meat essence.)
            Pastas
The Sweet Pastas of the Renaissance (So, not only do we get modern dishes, we also get recipes for historical dishes which one usually never finds outside a book specializing in Renaissance cooking).
Risotto, Soup, and Vegetable First Courses
            Second Courses
            Vegetable Side Dishes
            Breads
            Desserts

Aside from the atypical choice of the California bay, nothing in this book disagrees with anything I have seen from any other authority on Italian cooking. In fact, Ms. Kasper generally improves on other advice by giving more details and a finer turn to her information on ingredients, techniques, and background. I am especially happy to see recipes for some of the more complicated dishes which simply never find their way into less ambitious books, such as `bomba di riso', a northern Italian analogue to the pasta `timbale' of the south. And, while many books cover bread making in a very superficial manner, this book not only does justice to this difficult subject, it covers many of the more arcane flatbreads which tend to be overshadowed by pizza from Naples and foccacia from Genoa. Her chapter on desserts also gives the lie to Sr. Batali's often-repeated statement that the Italians are not big on sweet desserts. While many of these may have grown out of French and Austrian influences, there are tortes and tarts aplenty to enliven an Italian themed entertainment.

Ms. Kasper also gives us a very nice little guide to ingredients, mail order sources, and a bibliography composed almost entirely of Italian language sources.

It is not hard to see how Ms. Kasper has been able to produce such a great book. Elizabeth David lived in Italy and studied its cuisine for a year before producing her excellent `Italian Food'. Ms. Kasper has spent the better part of a lifetime, including five years living in Bologna, studying this cuisine. It is no surprise that the recipe writing in this book rivals that of Julia Child in `Mastering the Art of French Cooking', as this author has spent about the same time mastering her subject before committing it to paper.

Any culinary library that has any pretensions to being complete must include a copy of this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Little Book.......2007-01-09

Well written - cute tricks that aren't hard.... I took this book step by step and made sure my dog knew each one in succession. Tricks are built upon other commands.... - so it's not a 'fast book'.... sometimes it take a week to get to the next one. Great suggestions though.

This book is written with clear insight and it trains dogs with compassion. It teaches training in steps that build upon each other, therefore creating less stress for you and your dog.

5 out of 5 stars Idiots Guide to Dog Tricks by Liz Palika.......2005-08-06

This is a fabulous book for any one with a clever dog - and all our dogs are clever aren't they? Especially coming out in the summer, this is the perfect book to get for any kid who has a dog, but it isn't just for kids.
Ms Palika clearly explains the tricks step by step, starting with basic tricks and then expanding to make them all unique. Many of the tricks can be adapted to "real life" such as picking up toys. Some of the other tricks will make your dog the hit of any party.
A fun book at a reasonable price for any dog lover!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but just two things wrong with it..........2001-05-12

A really good book, but as I said above, just two things wrong with it. First, it doesn't give any advice on what to do if your dog KNOWS what to do, but won't. Or if your dog doesn't learn using the method shown. Second, and I realize this isn't a huge problem, it just irritates me that almost the exact same book is published under the title 'Dog Tricks for Dummies'. That annoys me for some odd reason.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent basic and trick training book for your dog!.......2000-02-16

It covers the basic obedience training, with a humane approach and of course gives you step-by-step directions to teach your dog lots of tricks. I started teaching my 3-month old labrador with it and now at 6 mo.I'm amazed how fast she learns. It tells you how to teach your dog to bring the newspaper, turn off the lights, bring her leash, sing, dance, play hide-and-seek, bring a soda from the fridge and the basics: sit, down, stay, no, walk, wait, etc.The author tries to sell her leash and clicker (not needed) but anyway it's a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to train your dog!.......1999-05-19

Wow! What a great and easy way to train your dog! My little Westie has avoided all previous attempts to get her to "fall in line" but using Hodgson's techniques and a little patience my dog is now well mannered and behaved. The text is easy to read and the examples and exercises are even easier to follow.

I higly recommend this book to anyone who is getting started with a new dog or trying to "teach the old dog a new trick"!

3 out of 5 stars Good but could use a little more detail.......1999-03-05

I have used Hodgson's tips to teach my 10-month Sheltie to ring a bell to go outside, to shake and to chase his tail. I have not yet been able to convince him to do much else. For example, he knows what roll over means, but begins to bark and dance around instead of doing it. I personally think he feels "out of control" when rolling, but there is little help in the book about how to approach things when your dog understands the command but executes it only under duress.

I am in the process of designing a new back yard with inground pool and spa. I have been reviewing several books to get ideas. If that is what you are looking for - keep looking you won't find much here. This book is more of a photojournal of neo contemporary pools from around the world. It covers about 30 pools (most look the same). The majority of them are very contemporary recatngles with no decks. Just look at the cover - there are 29 more pools that look just like it inside. On the same note these pools are all in million dollar homes and are not very impressive unless you love plain, sleek, rectangular pools with minimal landscaping and concreate decks. Sorry I just didn't get it.

                      Book Description

Feminism and Contemporary Art discusses the work of individual women artists within the context of the wider social, physical and political world. Jo Anna Isaak looks at the work of a diverse range of artists from the United States, the former Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and Canada. She discusses the work of such women as Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman, Nancy Spero, Elaine Reichek, Jeanne Silverthorne, Mary Kelly, Lorna Simpson and the Guerrilla Girls, and examines a range of work by twentieth-century Soviet women artists. Isaak argues that contemporary art under the influence of feminism provides the momentum for a comic critique of key assumptions about art, art history, and the role of the artist.

This book is an interesting collection of power- ful essay's on the Postmodernist condition and how that has shaped the role of women artists to- day. Whether these strategies are being employed fashionably or in thoughtful disregard to presumed male prejudice is well argued and perceptive.

                      Book Description

Prompted by the overt omission of Muncie's black community from the famous study by Lynd and Lynd, Middletown: A Study in Modern American Culture, the authors uncover the neglected part of the story of Middletown, a well-known pseudonym for the Midwestern city of Muncie, Indiana. It is a uniquely collaborative field study involving local experts, ethnographers, and teams of college students. The book, The Other Side of Middletown, and DVD, Middletown Redux, are valuable resources for community research. Sponsored by the Virginia B. Ball Center for Creative Inquiry, Muncie, Indiana.

                      5 out of 5 stars Making a difference in a community.......2006-10-15

It gives me great pleasure to write the first review for this magnificent book. Not only is it for the student, it is for the lay reader as well.
As to the qualitative researcher-this is a must. It brings together many writers, including those in the community, and gives us a real picture of what is going on in Middletown (Muncie, Indiana) in the present. This community came together to tell their story, along with Lassiter, Campbell, and others.
For the lay reader, this is easily read and understood. My only question is...why don't other communities do as this one has??? Perhaps telling our stories, talking with one another...that might make a difference in the way we get along in America. Not only is the story about race...it combines ethnic beliefs with age and gender differences...
I rec. this book for anyone interested in what can and will happen when a few people try to make a difference...
