An elegant telling of a tale of a community through the eyes of the participants', intertwined and overlapping stories, reminiscent of Baxter's "Feast of Love". The author has great compassion for his characters' complex and difficult lives. You should read once fast, twice slowly, and maybe once aloud.

I really liked the stories in the book. They were very interesting. I liked how all of the stories were intertwined.

This was a unique read. The cadence of the first chapter was a bit difficult, but as each chapter is written in the "voice" of a different individual, the rest of the book did not follow this pattern. The stories were individually interesting, but the intermingling of characters and circumstances had me straining to remember all details of each story so as not to miss out on anything. Very good story for all types of individuals. The themes of the short stories focus range from the good to the bad in the world and help the reader to focus on all of the blessings in his or her life. I can't wait to read it again.

Badly Written.......2004-12-22

As much as I love Norse mythology, I just couldn't finish this book; it's just too badly written. It reads like it was written by a high school student with a good imagination, but one who has spent more time playing D&D than actually practicing the skill of writing.

The writing is careless, clunky, and clumsy, and Reichert's many mistakes and stumbles in the simple details make it impossible to suspend disbelief in the fantasy aspects of the story. There's no sense of place, and not much more sense of character, just a long series of events.

Don't waste your time on this book.

Very Entertaining!.......2000-07-28

This was a very entertaining norse-myth fantasy.I really liked the characters: Al Larson, vietnam soldier transported to norse-myth oriented world in a body of elf and his battles with evil dark elf sorcerer.I also enjoy Taz the noble thief as well. This book was easier read than most of Reichert's novels. Bifrost Guardians is less convoluted not as depressing as her other norse myth series:Renshai and has more light-hearted humor as well.

(i am not a native speaker, please overlook my style)

In the 300 pages of this novel we are told countless times how much Neal loves Dylan, how their physical need is overwhelming and little else. The story itself could have been told in no more than 50 pages (perhaps even less) all in all.

Problem is, this is no porn, though some sex scenes are explicit enough, so that the result is simply boring.

This is most absurd because the author seems to know perfectly well what she is doing: the writing is neat, characterization accurate and fairly consistent; action scenes, the few that there are, are well developped. How a skilled writer could decide to write a novel about nothing simply escapes my understanding.

Another flaw, more linked to my personal point view, is that the author, a woman, simply fails to catch the difference between a woman and a gay man: Neal is a lovable character but he seems to think and act like a woman, surely not like a gay man.

The sci-fi story was interesting, and it's nice to read a book with gay characters. However, the main characters can't seem to keep their hands off of each other, even in serious situations. I just found it very distracting.

A fun read.......2003-02-17

I really enjoyed this book. It takes place in the future and is a bit of a thriller/mystery. There's a great love story and a lot of action. I finished it in one day as I couldn't wait to see what happened. I recommend it if you're looking for a good fun read for a long weekend.

Ms. Snyder has great potential but..........2002-10-27

I've been a fan of Ms. Snyder since the "Forever" days. I think she is a very talented writer and I'm glad to see that she's made the jump to publishing (and I hope it's a successful one for her). However, having said that, and having read most of her early work, I see many similarities between her stories. The stories all seem to have a very familiar storyline, characterization, and outcome. I often feel that I am reading the same story with different character names.

I hope this is something she can work on and overcome. I feel that if she would be able to add more depth to her characters and storyline, she would be able to offer her readers a more attractive and grabbing story every time instead of just the first time.

I am somwhat disappointed but not surprised. .......2007-09-10

I lived and worked in Korea for almost 2 decades and consider korea my second home. I also love to eat and cook Korean food. I also married a Korean and have some insight in day to day meal prep. I am disappointed that Bechu )korean cabbage) is compared to napa cabbage. It is not the same. Twice a year Koreans buy bechu for betchu kimche, winter and summer kimche. It is very similar, but not identical to a typical cabbage you get here in the US, heavy, solid. I am also disappointed in some of the ingredients / descriptions and uses. For example, ground red pepper - gochu garu versus ground chili paste - gochu chung. That was not really addressed yet is a mainstay in the Korean meals. Some Korean dishes are difficult to put into a recipe simply because some of the ingredients real take a lot of time to prepare. We are lucky here in Denver that there is a Korean market, Midopa, which imports the actual Korean vegetables including bechu, got to gi (turnip) and so forth so we can make authentic Korean dishes. However, you cannot obtain homemade, that is to say family made, soy sauce and sesame oil produced here in the US. There are some older agimas who keep to the old ways who make it but is for family use, not for sale. My inlaws will bring these items here when they visit. The difference in taste is like night and day. Be advised also that each family prepares their meals a little differently.

This is another excellent Korean cookbook. The recipe for Pancakes is excellent and tastes just like my expensive local restaurant's. Highly recommend for anyone addicted to Korean food.

A good basic introduction to Korean cooking.......2007-04-10

Like a lot of Western fans of Asian cooking, I never am quite sure if what I'm eating in a restaurant is the real, authentic cooking of a regions, or an overly Westernized version. Korean food has not been homoginized to the extent that Chinese and Thai food have in this country, but unless you're dining with a Korean-born companion you can never know for sure. The same goes for cookbooks; is this the real recipe someone would serve in their home in Korea, or something that's been homoginized to a MacDonld's-trained palatte?

I bought "Eating Korean" after reading reviews both here at Amazon and at a few on-line bulletin boards for Korean expats and Korean-Americans. The general concensus was that while the recipes were toned down a bit in seasoning, they are indeed authentic. So far, my experience has been that carefully following the recipes in Celia Hae-Jin Lee's book will deliver something very close to what I've had in various restaurants. I've made her seafood pancakes (Pa Jun), kimchee pancakes, and various namool, and all have come out very close to what I expected.

Unlike some cookbooks for non-western cuisines, no special cookware or difficult techniques are required for most of the recipes presented here. A large pot and a skillet or wok should suffice for most any recipe. Grilled meats like Bulgogi can be made on a barbecue grill. You might want to buy a traditional bowl for serving the hot BiBimBop, or some large mason jars for making Kimchee, but that's about it.

Aside from the recipes, the author's stories of growing up Korean in Korea and America are very enjoyable, and provide a context for the recipes; I was greatly reminded of another favorite cookbook, "Every Grain of Rice: A Taste of Our Chinese Childhood in America", which, although about Chinese and not Korean cooking, has a similar narrative structure.

Great Background.......2007-01-14

This is an excellent cookbook, albiet one written by a Korean-American. Like most younger Korean-Americans, she has toned down the fire. This is not a problem because almost all of her dishes can be heated up or energized by adding ground Korean Chilli Pepper. She gives excellent background on the dishes and this book is one of the best Korean Cookbooks I have seen in English. The only other comment I have is that she like many young people adds a bit too much sugar for my taste in her recipes.

I love this book not only because the author is my friend's sister, but because I am Korean too and know how the food should taste. The taste of food is regional, but the recipes in this book are very good. You can tweak it to what your individual tastes are, but I love the simplicity of how she describes everything and also that its not just all fluff and pictures. The stories are heartwarming. She also tells you the names of the food in Korean (written in English the way Koreans would pronounce it) and there are sooo many recipes! I think this is the best Korean food cookbook written in English by far.

A basic book. Gives you a bottom line what the Dog is. A good help if you decide to get one and have no idea what they are like. This dog has alot of pluses. They are a great breed but not for everyone. What dog is?

A nice general overview, but that's all........2006-12-07

The Complete Pet Owner's Manual series, published by Barron, is a nice general reference for dog owners of any breed, and this book is no exception. It couples readable text with bright and attractive photographs, and it would make a good place to start researching if you are interested in owning a Shiba Inu of your own.

That said, though, do not expect this book to become your bible of Shiba Inu information. Like many books of this sort, this 'complete' manual focuses on the positives of Shiba Inus, without giving proper attention to the challenges inherent with the breed. For example, no mention is made anywhere of the breed's tendency to nip when excited even well past the puppy ages, or to do anything and everything (door-dashing, fence climbing, etc.) to escape and seek adventures beyond their yard. The book describes Shibas as a breed requiring 'moderate energy' and claims that a Shiba generally gets enough exercise playing in the house. Anyone who has owned a Shiba knows that this is not true; Shibas are easily bored when they are not exercised well, and when bored they will dig, chew, and otherwise destroy their environment.

All told, it's an okay book. It offers practical (if basic) advice on choosing a puppy, housetraining, introducing a Shiba to other pets and children. An overview of the breed history and standard is included, but most of what is found here could also be found in any book about any dog breed. The only leg up it has on other breed-specific books is that the pictures are very attractive and plentiful.

If you're a Shiba Inu enthusiast, this book will be a welcome addition to your library. It's written by someone who owns and loves Shiba Inus, so unlike other breed-specific books that deal mostly in generalities, this book is specific and reasonably honest. The book is substantial and contains a lot of good, respectable information without being too heavy-handed or condescending. It also contains a lot of beautiful color photography.

I own a shiba inu and am always interested to have proper infos about this fascinating kind of dog. I have to say that one finds a lot of wonderful shiba colour pictures together with infos which are fortunately more interesting for a simple owner than a professional breeder.
Shibas lovers should pay attention to a hidden info regarding another book of the same author, "Japanese Shiba (Special Rare Breed Edition) ISBN 1-903098-65-3, which is just identical to this one apart from the cover. Be careful not to buy twice the same book...

The author penned a very amusing book on Shibas and shared with us his experience and knowledge of the breed. This is a well organized book for the new Shiba owner or someone contemplating this breed. ... stories and facts are told to tickle the reader; in contrast, Payton's thin tome is packed concisely but serious in delivery. I strongly suggest both books as the best of the lot out there.

This is a very nice calendar, the pictures are beautiful. The only thing that disappointed me was except for one picture, all of the others were pictures of the red colored shibu inus not the multicolored which is what I have at home.

I have not one Shiba Inu, but two. If you don't have a Shiba that sounds like no feat. However, if you do have a Shiba you may know that there is a certain level of challenge in owning a Shiba. This book was incredibly helpful. It had great pictures, information and resources for further information. You can tell it was written by a person who really knows Shibas. I wish I would have had this book a year ago, my life would have been much simpler. For anyone who has been captivated by those little almond eyes and going to buy a Shiba in the near future, buy this book. It's hard to track down, but easy to find than a canine behaviorist who is fluent in Japanese culture.

One of two excellent books on shibas, the other being Gretchen Haskett's The Total Shiba. The Complete Shiba has lots of color photos (Haskett's is all B&W), and is good enough to be your only shiba book. The only reason to buy Haskett's instead of Atkinson's would be to get the great list of Japanese name suggestions. The publisher is no longer Macmillan - it's Howell Book House (Wiley), )

This book gives good information. Maybe a little heavy on the showing/breeding and a little light on the housepet stuff but that is fine. It is funny how it talks about the dog throwing up the first car ride home (mine did!) and its overall temperament. It was 100% accurate! Definitely buy if you are looking at buying or have bought a Shiba.

I really enjoyed this book. I breed Shibas here in America and even though this book was written by a UK breeder, it is wonderful. If you are considering getting a Shiba, you really need this book. It has a lot of great information on grooming and training a Shiba. I have all my future puppy owners get this Shiba book over all others. It is really geared for your typical pet Shiba owner, but breeders would also find it useful, especially in pedigree research of British Shibas.

I have been wanting to cover a couple of frames I was given. None of the books I have looked at in the library, or have bought on amazon really explained how to do it. None of them gave instructions on how to line a shade.This one came today. I am delighted with the fold out pages of instructions. I know with this book I will be able to do a good job.

As an avid home sewer, I found this book to be very helpful in creating my first lampshades. I enjoyed the pictures and found them to be helpful for future ideas. I also felt that this book had very good written directions that one needs to read to be successful. The lampshades featured in this book are more of the "tailored" everyday type and not the "victorian" vintage style. I continue to use this book as both a style and technical resource.

A pretty book with little useful information........1999-06-30

If what you're looking for is a nicely designed book with lots of pretty pictures of unusual lampshades, this is a good book. However, if you're looking for practical information on how to make basic lampshades, I suspect you'll be dissapointed. While it does offer how-to's, they apply primarily to the (mostly small) shades pictured (many requiring oddly shaped frames, with no sources for where to get them).

The life of Dvora Baron (1887-1956) evokes both inspiration and mystery. She was born in a Russian shtetl, the precocious daughter of a rabbi. Her intellectual gifts garnered her an education usually reserved for boys, and she soon proved a brilliant writer, widely published while still in her teens. At age twenty-three she immigrated to Palestine, married a prominent Zionist journalist, and joined the literary intelligentsia of the emerging nation. Her writing showed startlingly modernist points of view (a day-old baby girl in "The First Day" and a female Jewish dog in "Liska," for example), and she took on such topics as divorce ("Fradl"), incest ("Grandma Henya"), and domestic violence ("A Quarreling Couple"). But when her beloved brother died in 1923, Baron retired to her apartment. There she spent the last thirty years of her life, in touch with the literary community but rejecting her early stories as "my rags." She never left her residence and spent most of her time in bed, tended by her daughter.
Israeli writer and psychologist Amia Lieblich was seventeen when Dvora Baron died; the two women never met. But Lieblich has written this biography as a series of conversations taking place in Dvora's darkened room during the last year of her life. Lieblich's vividly realized portrait elicits Dvora's memories of childhood; the descriptions of traditional women's lives in her writing; a view of her eccentric marriage and odd relationship with her daughter; and her thoughts on work, life, and death.
Dvora is a living presence in these conversations; Lieblich approaches her as one of the great creative spirits of Hebrew literature. Having undergone a crisis in her own life, Lieblich seeks out Baron as a source of wisdom and direction. The result is an unusual and moving literary-psychological adventure that merges Dvora Baron's world with that of an Israeli woman today.
