this is the best war novel i've ever read. the writing is brisk, the story moves quickly, the portraits of the soldiers are powerfully lucid. this novel manages to pull off an incredible feat---it makes brutal soldiers who are war criminals seem almost sympathetic (almost). the novel makes these soldiers appear almost as if they are pawns of forces much larger than themselves. the ending chapter is the best ending chapter of any book that i've read.

I have read all the other books in this series and enjoyed them. This I didn't think was quite up to par.
Maybe it's because she is coming to the end of this series?

I love the Manor House series, I actually have the last two that I haven't read yet, so I will have something delightful to look forward to. I do this with the Daisy Dalyrimple, post WWI series as well.
This is set during WWII in a village in England, where all must cope with boisterous Yanks, food rationing and the inevitable murderer in their midst. Lady Elizabeth and Major Monroe's attraction for one another is understated. The villagers, especially the tyrannical Rita Crumm and her womens group are always amusing. I will truly miss this series when the last two books are released.

This series as well as her Pennyfoot Hotel series is (and I hate this word) awesome. I have never read a complete series before I found the two of these, now I have read both...you will not be disappointed. It (they) may take place in Edwardian and war time England, but the characters are so 'today'. And, get this. I sent an e-mail to Mrs. Kingsbury, which she actually answered. One of her secrets to success is a much younger husband! She is just a delightful person. She writes good, clean, interesting mysteries. Plus, a bonus: she is also writing under another name...but this time romances!
Brits and Yanks at war.......2004-08-14
As others have said, I really like this series more for the depiction of life in a British village during WWII than for the mysteries themselves. There are some very good continuing characters: young girls, bumbling village constables, the American soldiers - plus a right old rip-roaring boo-hiss village harridan whom I love to hate!
And of course there are Lady Elizabeth, her faithful household retainers, and the handsome US officer in whose presence Lady E practically gives off sparks, heh, heh...
I guessed the solution to the murder pretty early on but still enjoyed the book because I wanted to know what happened to the characters.
More drama/soap opera than mystery.......2004-07-11
Which is not necessarily a bad thing. I enjoy this series but more for the descriptions of WWII British life than for the mysteries which are usually quite cookie-cutter and simple to figure out.
In this entry, Elizabeth is helping Major Earl Monroe with the mystery of four redheaded soldiers who have been poisoned. There are a few suspects from which to choose, making it fun to guess which is the guilty party.
More interesting, Elizabeth and Earl come closer to admitting their feelings for one another. Polly is still trying to get back into the good graces of soldier Sam, to whom she lied about her age.
The book ends with two cliffhangers, causing me to look forward to the next book in the series.

Intraoperative electrical stimulation in awake patients is a seminal technique during brain surgery allowing one to infer the function of brain areas by temporary inactivation. Using this technique, we found that inactivation of the middle portion of the superior temporal gyrus (STG) leads to disturbed serial exploratory visual search. The data supplement recent findings by Ellison et al. [Ellison, A., Schindler, I., Pattison, L. L., & Milner, A. D. (2004). An exploration of the role of the superior temporal gyrus in visual search and spatial perception using TMS. Brain, 127, 2307-2315] using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation over the STG in healthy subjects. Our data demonstrate that the STG is integral to human exploration behaviour and challenge the traditional view that only the right posterior parietal cortex is involved in the mediation of visual search processes.

Fun, Campy Pulp Sci-fi Novel!.......2005-11-29
I really enjoyed reading "Menace Under Marswood" (MUM). MUM is a fun little pulp sci-fi romp written by Sterling E. Lanier in 1983. Lanier is better known for novel "Hiero's Journey" and for the prolific amount of novels he helped publish including the very well known "Dune" series when he worked at Chilton Publishers.
The novel itself is an adaptation of a "into the wilds" adventure complete with wild savages called "Ruckers" who are the feral descendants of failed Mars colonists. The hero of the novel is Slater, an English / Pathan (Afghani) member of the Earth-based UN task force that supervises the colonization of Mars. In MUM, Earth started the terraforming of Mars several centuries ago except they ran into one problem: China was left out. In revenge, China sent scores of pests and parasites (Kudzu vines, rats, mosquitos, fleas, etc.). As a result, what was once an orderly job of terraforming has turned Mars into a wild overgrown alien jungle lethal to the unprepared. Mars is now an overgrown jungle filled of a mix of dangerous Mars-indigenous and transplanted Earth plants, insects and animals. In the lower gravity of Mars, some animals become truly horrific, growing larger and leaner than they were on Earth.
We first meet Slater while he is serving at a frontier fort protecting miners from the wild Ruckers. A mining convoy returning from the wilds is ambushed before the entrance of the fort and Ruckers are held to blame. Mysteriously, several Ruckers intentionally give themselves up in a very staged surrender. Slater's superior officer, Muller, a renowned woodsman experienced with the Ruckers and Mars wilds interrogates the prisoners. Slater and Muller find out that the Ruckers themselves are under great pressure. Some unknown force out in the Mars wilds is pushing the Ruckers out of their "native" habitat.
Not only that, but one of the Rucker prisoners is a famous chief known to Muller and asks the Earthers for their help. One of the other Rucker prisoners is a beautiful young woman and a Rucker "wise women" with strange powers of the mind... She and Slater drink a mystical tea and fall into a strange dream of alien beings on a Mars covered with water. The expedition to explore the cause of the disturbance is soon organized and both Earther and Rucker men will be working together including the Rucker chief and "wise woman." The expedition travels through many challenges in the wilds of Mars encountering enemy Rucker tribes, wild beasts and even signs that there may be aliens behind the disturbances in the wilds... add in an escaped convict / evil mastermind and the plot thickens!
The novel reminded me a lot of the British adventure novels from India and the Far East. I was particularly reminded of H. Beam Piper's "Uller Uprising." It had that touch of pulp adventure and excitement that once drove the entertainment industry.
I enjoyed reading "Menace Under Marswood" and recommend it.

Although I don't consider Menace Under Marswood to be as great an achievement as the Hiero books, it is quite good. The plot, tone, and characters are very similar to Lanier's other books and you are bound to like this if you are a Hiero fan.
The plot, in brief: Centuries ago, Earth governments sent unmanned ships to terraform Mars. Some of the governments on Earth weren't included and responded by sending follow on ships containing the nastiest forms of life Earth had to offer. The end result is a wild and dangerous planet, almost too inhospitable for colonization. Some of the original settlers of Mars have gone native. These "ruckers" are now in conflict with the colonial government, which hides behind the walls of a few fortified complexes. To complicate the situation, a mysterious new movement has appeared among the ruckers, which may be controlled by a criminal from Earth or, possibly, the "old martians."

The Rolls Royce of meals in minutes cookbooks.......2007-04-11
I love cookbooks. I have an extensive collection. I taught myself how to cook using cookbooks so I believe a good cookbook is one that inspires and should be understandable and reasonably easy to use; with that in mind I love this cookbook.
A big reason I love this book is because it does not try to trick you into believing that a great meal will just magically appear in 30 minutes. This book educates you on how to organize your kitchen so you will be able to produce gourmet meals with minimal cooking time. This includes practical suggestions on how to stock your kitchen pantry, refrigerator and freezer. Detailed time-saving techniques on how to prepare herbs, spices and other ingredients ahead of time so that their flavor is preserved and you have minimal prep-time when cooking. There is also advice on equipment and a lot of time is spent on techniques; each individual technique or set of techniques are explained step-by-step and illustrated when necessary.
I find that knowing my skill level helps me to determine if a cookbook is written for me; so far my stages of development have been total disaster, occasional disaster or novice, beginner, experienced beginner, advanced beginner/almost intermediate, and now I consider myself an intermediate cook. I am not a gourmet or professional by any means. I would not recommend this cookbook for a novice or beginner but for an experienced beginner through intermediate cook who wants to expand his or her repertoire and wants suggestions on technique, food preparation and stocking up their kitchen. I imagine this would be too simple for someone who is really advanced. If you fit in the categories I described above then this is a great option.
For the reviewer who described dishes she prepared as bland I have not had that experience. Although I follow the recipes from cookbooks as closely as possible I have found that it is always important to taste a dish when I am cooking and making changes if needed.
Disappointing for a Culinary School of Its Stature.......2007-02-15
I have to weigh in with a dissenting vote on this book. I had great expectations for this beautiful book from the Culinary Institute of America. I am a personal chef who is continually seeking quick and easy recipes with the wow factor, but to date none of the recipes I've tried in this book have delivered.
The Chicken with Artichokes and Mustard Sauce, Walnut Chicken,and Stir Fried Garden Vegetables with Marinated Tofu were all incredibly bland; I found myself acting as a physician of mercy, desperately trying to revive these dishes. Ditto for the Fruit Salad with Orange Blossom Syrup. The Manhattan Clam Chowder was good, but not memorable.
I was expecting a lot more from the CIA, which turns out so many great chefs. If you're looking for a book that has some great quickie recipes, I would spend my money on The Gourmet Cookbook, which has over 1,000 recipes. I've yet to make a bad one out of that book, and each recipe lists how long it will take. There are a great many recipes in the book which take under 30 minutes. The CIA should take a lesson from Gourmet Magazine before they put out another mediocre cookbook.

After over 30 years utilizing fairly difficuly cookbooks (such as Joy Of Cooking) to yield consistently successful results the CIA has created a collection of outstanding recipes & techniques which you would swear required much more time to prepare.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.......2006-01-30
I thouht this book was very well written and informative. John Evans, an Englishman is very well versued regarding Cavalier King Charles. He gives you some great ideas that he has used regarding homoeopathic applications that can help keep your Cavalier healthy and not have to run to the Vet for every minor problem. I highly recommend this book to pet and show people alike!

This is THE book to read if you own a Cav. or are thinking of buying one. The author writes with warmth and a sound knowledge of the breed, gained through years of successful showing and breeding of these lovely dogs. The chapters on breeding and puppy raising are a must for anyone contemplating this avenue. Of particular appeal is the chapter on natural remedies for just about any ailment your dog may suffer from. Whether your Cav. is a pet or a show dog, I cannot recommend this book highly enough, it's wonderful.

bell hooks rocks.......2001-09-16
Wounds of Passion by bell hooks is an autobiography that explains the struggles of a very independent-nonconforming-feminist-black-woman-writer from the South struggling through a difficult childhood then later trying to adapt to the "foreignness" of the academic world of California. Just like hooks, this book is not easily placed into a clearly defined category. It could be at home among works of women's studies, feminism, African-American studies, cultural criticism, or autobiographies, just to name a few. This book is not merely a memoir of bell hooks' writing life. It presents several strong statements about American society and how difficult it is (even down to the family level) to be independent and to challenge the status quo. She calls the reader to bear witness to her pain and struggles throughout her life as a black female writer.
Two intertwining voices throughout the book make it a very interesting and unique narrative. As one voice is telling the story through time as the events are happening, another voice is looking back at these events as a third person in the here-and-now. This gives a reader more than the normal single-perspective and brings the reader a little closer to the story she's telling.
One of the many statements hooks makes with Wounds of Passion is blackness does not have a universal truth. This is exemplified by the following quote explaining the fundamental differences between her and her boyfriend Mack (who was born and raised in California) throughout their long, rocky relationship. Hooks explains, "He does not feel the pain of Jim Crow. Shared black skin does not draw them closer. Her kinda blackness is strange to him. His kinda blackness I've heard about but find it hard to believe" (52).
Many social issues surface in Wounds of Passion such as domestic violence, conflicting feminist views among black and white women, racial issues of the South, stereotypes, issues of social class, and several others. But hooks does not preach or prescribe any concrete "solutions" to these problems. She seems to merely want people to recognize these problems exist, and with that acknowledgment, be taking the first step in the overall solution.
She speaks many times about how poetry and words are a place for her to escape from the harsh reality of everyday life and how she moves beyond the boundaries of race and class through books (105). "Poetry is a place of transcendence" (109). Poetry is often a place where gender and race is not usually evident or important in the words and their meanings.
Although there's never any doubt that bell hooks is a feminist black woman, she says in the following quote about two good friends of her and Mack: "Their gayness is both significant and not solely defining. This is how she wants to feel about blackness, that it can always be significant without being the only aspect of her identity that matters. The same is true of being a woman" (237-238). This outlook will hopefully be the "norm" someday. Wounds of Passion will definitely help get us there.
hook's will never lie to you..........2001-03-22
As a black woman poet/writer, I was able to connect with hook's experiences and frustrations. There were deeply moving passages that explored the pain in loving and the satisfaction of pain articulated. "Language is a body of suffering and when you take up language you take up suffering too." At times, though, I felt that hooks could have been more succinct; the book could have been half its size. All in all, it is an interesting exploration into the heart of a writer and is an honest read.
Insightful and revealing.......2001-02-11
This insight to a black woman's life learning her craft of writing is insightful and very revealing. Those who have read Ms. hooks knows she leaves no leave unturned and has a no-holds approach to telling it like it is. The abuse, both physical and mental she witnessed in her childhood home must have been painful to relive. In expressing how it was to both want to follow her love of writing and loving a black man with the same ambition is a testament to her perserverance. When she found that she was being stifled she knew she had to choose for her own well-being. Loving and writing. Can the two be done? I recommend this book as a part of black women writers.
The Return of Bell Hooks.......1999-08-10
I have read so many of bell's books, and she is by far one of my most favorite authors; her work has greatly influenced my own thinking and writing. No one with a bit of openness and academic integrity can reject the wealth of insight bell has offered to feminism, race theory, and cultural studies.
With such a prolific career, however, there will be inevitable ups and downs. Without a doubt, bell's earliest works (ain't i a women, yearning, from margin to center, talking back...) are among her most groundbreaking; these works set the standard for studying race and gender as interrelated social phenomena. some of her later works lack the novelty and texture of her vintage writing.
for this reason, i am THRILLED to see wounds of passion. i love this book. having read bell's other books, i can appreciate the story she is telling -- it is interesting to see how her life experiences contribute to her academic writing. for those who describe the book as "self indulgent," self-centered, etc. Guess what? IT'S AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY!!! TO WHOM SHOULD SHE HAVE GIVEN THE ATTENTION????! Anyway, the book reveals how writing is often a mechanism for processing life's trials and tribulations. Congratulations, bell, on another wonderful work.
