Book Description
Everybody wondered why the Sanders family had come back to Rosalita, Texas, and moved in next door to Lou Jean Perry. It was apparently the absolute last place they should want to be, though thirteen-year-old Kayla Sanders had no idea why. As the summer heat intensified, Kayla's brittle mother's motives for moving next to bright-spirited Lou Jean would become clear, but not before Kayla discovers that passion listens not to the mind's reason but to the heart's demands. Writing with poignant intensity, Cindy Eppes draws on her Southern roots in a coming-of-age story told by a narrator straight out of Eudora Welty, yet indelibly stamped with a distinctive, contemporary style.

Everybody in Rosalita, Texas, wondered why the Sanders family had come back to town and bought the house next door to Lou Jean Perry. It was the absolute last place they should want to be. Now, Kayla Sanders looks back on that sizzling summer of her childhood, when the secrets of the past cast long shadows over two families' lives. In June 1967 Lou Jean Perry's husband, the first and only person from Rosalita killed in Vietnam, had been dead for more than a year. When thirteen-year-old Kayla first met her, a laughing Lou Jean executed a perfect backbend right there on her sparkling clean kitchen floor. It stood to reason that this bright-spirited woman -- the complete opposite of Kayla's brittle, churchgoing mother, Sarah Jo -- would become Kayla's new best friend. As the heat and madness of summer intensified, Sarah Jo's motives for moving next to Lou Jean would become clear, but not before a family's foundation cracks and crumbles, a woman is driven to the brink of madness, and a young girl discovers that passion listens not to the mind's reason but to the heart's demands. Writing about family with a poignant intensity, Cindy Eppes draws on her Southern roots to create a coming-of-age story told by a narrator straight out of Eudora Welty, yet indelibly stamped with a distinctive, contemporary style. Beautifully crafted, South of Reason shows Eppes to be an extraordinary storyteller, weaving a shimmering web shot through with the rainbow colors of life.
Customer Reviews:
South of Reason..........2004-10-08
This was a really good book. I only gave it 4 stars because some of it was a bit dragging, but overall it held my interest. It's about the slow deterioration of one south Texan family, and one awful summer for a 12 year old girl, Kayla, and her thirteen year old neighbor Charles Dale. They find out the truth about the secrets their parents have been keeping for 12+ years, and deal with the shattering consequences they bring to both families.
This was a very sad book, but at the same time a pleasant one. Kayla really grows up this particular summer, and even though the ending isn't what most of us would like to see, it was what was best for everyone. And by the end of the novel, Kayla also understands this. I would definitely recommend this book. I didn't think it was a real fast paced gripping tale, I took my time with it, but it was one that I really enjoyed. I'll be looking out for more books by this author.
good book to read before bed.......2004-08-21
I was literally dozing off while reading this book. It goes nowhere. Would have been more interesting if there was a big, explosive secret exposed near the end.
Good, but could be better........2004-05-27
This book is great. The plot line is fresh and easy to follow. The author definitely has a gift with language. However, some of the writing does not ring true to an adolescent girl (the protagonist). Also, there are some bumps in the plotline that could be smoother. All in all, it is a great first book and I certainly look forward to more novels by Ms. Eppes.
An author's soul is on the pages of a first novel........2002-10-18
Cindy Eppes' debut novel is not the sort of book I normally read...but the jacket copy and the beauty of the language on the first few pages drew me in. And what a world Eppes creates, filled with the secrets that houses and families hide, the mundane places where the best of intentions can have the worst of outcomes. I've been recommending this book to friends and other authors and hope that Eppes will get the recognition she deserves for a novel so beautifully done. Bravo!
North of Intuition.......2002-07-31
Mysteries and jealousies swirl and simmer in the heat of a south Texas summer. The story twists through the pages like a tumbleweed in a hot Texas wind. The child Kayla comes of age ... and to an awareness that things aren't always as they seem. "Mother used religion as a wifely whip," Kayla observes. Meanwhile, neighbor Lou Jean washes her hands compulsively. Families, betrayals, and friendships are never quite as they appear. Balanced by an inherently nice, although spineless father and a wild and rowdy grandmother, Kayla watches as her family life crumbles and transforms, and begins to see things from a different perspective, while the beautiful neighbor next door spirals out of control. And her mother changes into ... what? Full of unexpected twists and turns, the summer Kayla's family moves from Cameron to Rosalita evolves into an ever changing mosaic of emotion.
From her depiction of the sticky juice of a ripe peach on a hot day to the portrait of a night of Texas football, Cindy Eppes gives an amazingly brilliant portrayal of a sense of time and place, betrayer and betrayed, and of the heart and soul of a girl coming of age. An amazing entry in the "first book" category. I highly recommend this.
Customer Reviews:
poorly written.......2007-02-27
Since I did not read the whole book (I just couldn't force myself beyond 30 pages either), I decided to give it one star, just to be kind. The book reads like it was written by a tenth grader in the 1930's. The society is based on technology, but the author seems to have no understanding of science and technology at all, since even a layman like me can see the flaws and errors in it. He also seems not to know the meaning of many of the words he uses, like "puissant" and "penultimate". His society is medieval, right down to the clothes - and he doesn't even seem to understand them. And then there are statements like the one describing the inverted pyramid headquarters of one the the characters, which is held in place by "pharium, the strongest metal in the galaxy"! I could go on, (and on), but I think you get the idea.
Trite and Dull.......2007-01-19
Honestly, I could only get through the first 30 pages before I gave up. The writing is terrible and on par with a bad tv mini-series. Just dreadful.
Has potential... I'd like to give 3 1/2 stars.......2006-12-16
I really thought this book was pretty good. That is until I reread Dune (written by the author's father), I thought back to the Foundation Series (Issac Asimov, read them twice!) and then I decided Timeweb was just okay. There are SO many great ideas present in this book, Herbert has quite the web of a story, but it just seems like it was lacking in some way. Maybe I've become a science fiction snob, but Dune is such a masterpiece, it just makes Timeweb pale in comparison. Brian Herbert has a lot to live up to...
I think this book would be great for readers just beginning their venture in science fiction. There are intriguing characters, good story lines, fantastic ideas, and good old space drama. I love the idea of the timeweb, and these creatures that travel the web that have been there since the beginning of time. Some of the characters and details seem extraneous, but maybe I just haven't seen the full potential of these things, and that will come in the later books. Time will tell...
So, if you are into science fiction, you will probably enjoy this book. But after you do (or before), read Dune. And then read it again. Then read some Asimov. After that a person realizes how small they are in this universe....
Brian proves himself as solo author.......2006-10-14
The son of the mighty frank herbert has now proved without a shadow of doubt, his ability to spin an epic galactic tale not set in the Dune universe.
The galaxy of TIMEWEB has a multitude of alien species- mutati shapeshifters(who are at war with the Merchant Prince Alliance-human worlds), reptilian and mini humans that vy for control over sentient creatures known as podships, industrial ingineuists hibbil and adurians are but a few wonderfully conceived races from this book.
The Good
+ Creative use of alien species
+ Strong galactic eco philosophy without being too preachy
+ I like the use of quotes before chapters that put things into context or just make a point
+ Plenty of galactic intrigue
+ Well written(I have no idea what the previous reviewers are talking about)story flows rapidly with compact chapters that give multiple perspectives without jumping around too much.
The "Bad"
-Ending feels like it ran out of steam too fast
-having to wait a full year for the sequel(I sincerley hope that brian does not limit this to a trilogy!)
Bottom line,
This is Exceptionally great space opera
Some good ideas but so badly written.......2006-07-15
The good thing about this book is that there are some good ideas. However, I am a third of the way through the book and I don't know if I have the stamina to finish it. The story is set in a society that tries to emulate the complexity of Dune, and, to a certain extent, succeeds. However, it is let down by a writing style which veers from childish to just plain tedious. There are an awful lot of chapters where nothing much happens, except someone sits around or (wow, excitement) goes from one poorly described place to another while the author, at unnecessary length, gives us some background information that, from a better writer, would emerge from the action.
If I were to judge it by the writing alone, it would have no stars, but the two stars are for the ideas. If this were the author's first book, it might be understandable, and I would say watch out for future ones when he might have more experience, more maturity and learned how to write. However, Mr Herbert has written several others, although all or most are collaborations with other authors. I do hope Mr Herbert does learn since I suspect he has it in him to be an interesting writer.
This is one of those books that makes you wonder whether the editor and the publisher were asleep when they let it out on the unsuspecting world. A good editor might just have been able to rescue it.
And this is only the first in a trilogy. Help!

Customer Reviews:
Awesome Book.......2007-02-19
I absolutely love this book. The recipes are easy to follow and actually taste good...(unlike some other more well known GF cookbooks). I made chocolate chip cookies today and I could not believe how wonderful they tasted...even better than wheat based cookies (seriously). I have also made several of the dinners and my husband who is not GF enjoys them greatly. As with any GF cookbook you will need to stock your pantry with a good variety of GF flours and staple products...but with the growing awareness of celiac disease many mainstream food markets are carrying these special products. This book is a must have. Enjoy.
Finally a GF cookbook that is simple and well designed.......2007-01-29
After my wife was diagnosed with Celiac disease, I did all the requisite research and bought a bunch of the recommended cookbooks, which were all helpful. However, Karen Robertson is the first GF cookbook author I've seen that has put together a well-designed, easy to use cookbook. The recipes and information are all top-notch and the layout of the book is completely functional as any other standard cookbook. I recommend this GF cookbook above all others.
A MUST have GF Cookbook!!!.......2006-12-08
Karen put a lot of effort into this book! We had Thanksgiving at our house and no one noticed that apple pie was GF!!! The green beans with pecan paste is simply fabulous. I was hoping for leftovers of this, but there were none. With this book, we can have pizza night like we used to. Next to try are the cutout cookies. This book has made our lives easier since finding out that both my son and I are Celiacs. My husband prefers the GF brownies-richer and more tasty! Please get this book. To Karen: When are you putting out another cookbook?
Outstanding!.......2006-11-12
This book is a must have for gluten-free diet folks. The baking is outstanding--neither you nor your guests will be able to taste or see a difference in your desserts! The secret seems to be in incorporating the recommended recipe for "Wendy Wark's Gluten-Free Flour Mix" in recipes instead of other flour mixes. I use it in all of my baking now--nothing compares to it! Also, great notes & tips are added throughout the book.
Great book, great price!.......2006-07-09
If anyone is looking for a cookbook for avoiding wheat/gluten in their diet, this is definitely one to consider!

Not Worth The Money.......2007-03-20
This really contained very info on actual crate training. The majority of the book talked about introducing your puppy to the crate not a lot of info on actual crate training process. You can get just as much info googling about crate training on the web.
Easy and Helpful.......2007-02-03
We bought & read this book in anticipation of our new puppy - the book was insightful, helpful, and extremely fast and easy reading. The information worked wonders. We have since gotten another puppy and used the same techniques on him too. We continue get compliments on our well behaved dogs.
My sister just welcomed a new puppy into her family and my first response upon hearing the news was to order this book for her. If the information in this book is taken to heart - it will work wonders.
Great!.......2006-11-03
A great booklet for teaching crate training in a positive manner! Great for the new dog owner or for giving in training classes!

Four Stars, for lots of hidden gems!.......2003-06-24
And because they are hidden, it takes the reader much more time and effort to find and correlate them than at first expected. On the other hand, the author is indeed thorough in his coverage and well-versed about the P-38 series. All in all, a very good reference book, although not in the same league as the Collector's Grade pubs or W.H.B. Smith's tomes (however dated these may be).
Good Buy.......2003-02-08
It goes into enough detail for the P38 or P1 owner with some info on the P4 and other models. I expect from this type of book a list of dates of manufacture per serial number if they were indeed serial (post war manufacture was) which is why it's shy a star. Otherwise, a book, should you own the gun, you'll want in your collection.

More a vibrant parade of richly hued celebration quilts than a straightforward instructional guide, Mary Lou Weidman's Quilted Memories: Celebrations of Life seeks to inspire quilters and would-be quilters to "increase their creativity quotient." To this end Weidman offers a number of helpful pep talks on gaining artistic confidence, working in a supportive atmosphere, and finding life events to immortalize in fabric. She gives a very general nod to working with color, choosing backgrounds, and adding fun embellishments like buttons and lace. The nine "projects" are actually just pattern templates of finished quilts; no real instructional guidance is presented other than a very brief list of extremely basic directions. What makes the book a pleasure to peruse are the dozens of intensely colorful, joyfully primitive quilts that fill the pages, produced by both the author herself and her circle of talented quilters. These delightful creations not only mark events as important as birthdays, weddings, new babies, and official holidays, they also celebrate such seemingly inconsequential but no less quilt-worthy happy memories as a snowy family outing, an afternoon in Grandma's garden, or a sunny day at the beach. --Amy Handy

I Want You To Quilt!!.......2006-09-14
If you love to quilt and want to stretch your imagination, or would like to quilt and need a "can't do it wrong" first project, this book is for you!
This is one of the most colorful and whimsical quilt books I have ever seen! Every page is a delight to the senses and stirs the imagination.
Mary Lou encourages you to get in touch with your creative side and cheers you on from start to finish. From choosing your quilt's theme and background fabric, to applique and piecing techniques, to finishing and embellishments, this book is full of the information and inspiration you need to make your own masterpiece.
Create a memory quilt - You can do it easily with the guidelines in this book.
Quilted Memories.......2002-06-23
This book is fantastic. If you need inspiration, ideas, or just a chuckle, this is the book for you.
Inspirational!.......2002-01-22
This book is one of the most inspirational books on quilting I've read. Mary's approach to applique is inspirational and has gotten my creative juices flowing.
I own both this book and "Whimsies & Whynots" by Mary Lou Weidman - in Whimsies & Whynots there are more large quilt examples to look at, while Quilted Memories has more smaller projects. Both have tons of beautiful examples of Mary's applique quilts, but if I had to choose between the two I'd pick Whimsies & Whynots because there seem to be more quilts in it.
But, this is still a 5-star book, well worth your money.
Capture your life in fabric.......2001-12-13
Others have written books with this same premise. No one has done it better. Mary Lou approaches her free form quilts with energy, imagination and an art background. She shares with the reader thoughts on creativity, suggestions for themes and ideas and the personal stories behind her quilts. I found the entire book captivating and fun to read. Her method is clear and sets just enough structural boundaries so the neophyte will not feel overwhelmed. Practice projects will help you to warm up.

Clarity in personal space design revealed.......2007-04-18
As a former employee of the Katz's, I have to say that this book is extremely thoughtful. The personal touch of their design abilities is portrayed in this book. They are almost giving away their secrets.
When referred to help family members with design, I usually purchase this book for them.
It makes an excellent gift for the confused individual that is trying to make over their home.
Great varitey, includes resource information.......2001-07-23
This is a wonderful and very unique book that shows a tremendous variety of room styles and then discusses the elements that make them up. From cluttered comfort to sleekly modern, the emphasis is on the purely decorative aspects of the rooms. Beneath the surface there are some great ideas about space utilization, storage and lighting as well.
Thirteen different room styles are shown such as graphic standard, cottage life, wood works, romantic white, elegant eclecticism, flower power, classical composed and inside out. Each style is described and several example photos are given. Captions highlight the details and important aspects that make up the room. An "ingredients" list tells all about the materials such as flooring, hardware, fabric, and wall covering that work in the space to create the right effect.
Unlike so many decorating books that show you lots of wonderful stuff and then leave you in the dark about where to get it, I was thrilled to see a resource list that tells you where to find all the elements used in the book. It even includes website addresses when applicable. With such a vast array of themes and ideas this book has something for everyone.
A compendium of visual & tactile information and suggestions.......2001-03-19
In Room Recipes: Ingredients For Great Looking Rooms, Cheryl and Jeffrey Katz offers the reader thirteen different, inspiring style recipes backed with their considerable expertise and know-how in creating rooms of memorable distinction and appearance. A superbly presented and highly recommended addition to any interior design reference book collection, Room Recipes is thoroughly user friendly and very beautifully illustrated throughout with sensational color photography.

And the Thornton Sisters were a great band!.......2007-04-11
This is a wonderful book about a wonderfully talented group of women. I had the pleasure of seeing The Thornton Sisters at Cornell University many, many years ago. I was completely blown away by their talent & stage presence. I am also a former road musician, and these women made a gigantic impression on me. Knowing their story makes it even more impressive! Read this book!
The DitchDiggers Daughter .......2006-07-01
This book was great the movie was awesome they need to put it on vhs and dvd. must read book to who ever didnt read this book u need to read it its very good.
Great Book. Get Movie........2006-01-15
This is a wonderful book! I saw the made for TV movie on cable, I think HBO. When will it be released on DVD? In the Memphis area this is required reading.
the value of hard work.......2005-11-04
This is the story of a black man who, when he received only daughters, decided to see what he could do with them. He decided they would be doctors and set about to make it happen. Donald Thornton was an uneducated man who nevertheless exuded a lot of wisdom. In the face of racism or mistreatment he would say "It builds character." He had a strong work ethic, working two or three jobs for the sake of his family. He passed this on to his daughters, especially Yvonne who wrote the book. It is her story as much as it is his. Through hard work and determination, and against adversity, she did in fact become a doctor. Yvonne shares an anecdote about a frog experiment. Scientists tied one of a frog's hind legs together to study atrophy. That leg, struggling against the bonds, became stronger than the other one. That could be the story of this book. It is a moving tribute to a father, and a testament to the qualities of perseverance and hard work. Truly inspiring, this book shows the value of fathers, and mothers, in the lives of their children; as well as the value of working hard for ones dreams.
Donald Rocks!!!.......2004-08-26
This book was one of the books on our mandatory reading listing for entering freshmen. At first I didn't know what I would have in common with this black family because my life was seemingly much different. Until I read the book. The Thornton family is like most any other family that wants what is best for their kids and will sacrifice to see that it happens. I was moved by this book. It made me cry and laugh. It also made me appreciate my parents a little more. Tough dad, tough kids.
