Back Cover Plot Teaser: "The Russians are pushing south into the Hindu Kush, expanding their empire at the expense of the forgotten tribes that surround the British Raj. Little did they expect such resistance as they found in the fabled city of Gandhara. Little did they expect the fables to be real.

Just as little did the wisewomen of Gandhara expect their system of protection to begin to fail them after millennia of effective defense. But the Russians' new weapons don't seem to care much about magic, and the Gandharans realize they must fight fire with fire. Tamai, who has never been able to control her magical powers sufficiently to join the wisewomen, is expendable; she is sent on a mission south into the Raj to acquire the fabulous weapons known as Martini-Henry rifles. Little did the wisewomen expect the fables of the Raj to be real..."

REVIEW: This journey / quest novel brings an isolated, primitive, fantasy city of women's magic head-to-head with historical colonial India, shocking both sides. Margaret Ball employs her always-skillful characterizations and plot twists. I read it in a single sitting and loved it.

I had to have amazon.com search for this book for me, since it was out of print ... but I think that it was well worth the wait! Anyone who enjoyed the sequel, Changeweaver, would certainly want to read this book, as it fills in the events preceding that story nicely.

I've not seen the movie yet, but I wanted to read the bok anyway. I loved it. I can't wait to go see the film this weekend!

Also, this is the second movie novelization I've read by Terry Bisson. I believe Bisson also wrote the novelization for The Fifth Element. I really must check out Bisson's work unrelated to film. I heartily recommend this bok.

        Book Description

Early ideas of extraterrestrials are compared with what we know today in Alien Life Search. A scientific discussion of aliens, UFOs and how their spacecraft might work provides the basis for exploring claims of extraterrestrial sightings. An overview of today's practical realities are considered and a helpful glossary explains scientific terms and concepts.

I am involved in the SETI@Home project, where idle computer time is used to process data from radio telescopes. That processing is a search for structured signals that could be a message from extraterrestrial civilizations and my children have seen the images on my computer screens and have asked questions about it. While I have explained most of the theories about extraterrestrial intelligence, I also went to our community library looking for a book for them to read. This is the one I found.
The level of writing is just right for children whose age is in the early double figures and the coverage is surprisingly thorough for 32 pages. Images drawn from many areas are used to reinforce the text, and they are appropriate and effective. My only objection to the material is the section called "The UFO Mystery." Not because there is any support for the theory that they are piloted, but because there is no coverage of the serious difficulties interstellar travel presents. One additional paragraph regarding the enormous distances and power requirements of moving from one star to another would have been appropriate.
I generally liked this book and my children learned a great deal from it. I recommend it for anyone who wants to learn the basics of what the search for extraterrestrial life involves.

This book was written in 1988, and therein lies a problem. In general, the book is a charming personal memory of a wine merchant's buying trip in France. It shines most when the book discusses the people who grow wine, or at least in 1988, grew wine. At that time, the wine industry was undergoing basic changes, in the way vines were grown, tended, stored, bottled and shipped. Perhaps a person with extensive knowledge of wine would find the book an interesting snapshot of wine growing/making, but people with less knowledge of wine will not know how, or if, change continued. One of the reasons I bought the book was to provide a non-textbook source of information about wine for a friend who knows little about wine. This book assumes too much of its reader to be useful as a basic instructional tool for such a person.

5 out of 5 stars Walking through France with Kermit.......2007-01-23

I recently was able to visit France on business when I was exposed to that nation's greatest natural resource-it's wine . Upon my arrival home I sought knowledge on the whole French wine heritage thing and yearned to return and try more samples. Kermit's book is written as though you are in the back seat of his car or walking up a rocky slope behind him on the way to a vinter's lair. The personal anecdotes and descriptions of the individuals he encounters keeps the book interesting as you are also learning the complex industry of French wine making .Kermit's blue collar approach to taste- we are all unique and good is as good tastes(sorry for taking artistic liberties Kermit) makes novices such as myself feel somewhat at ease in the often elitest community of wine lovers.

If Kermit ever needs a travel partner, after reading his fun filled, tart commentary I would gladly volunteer to forgo the burden in the name of wine education or even foreign relations given the current state of affairs.Give me a call Mr. Lynch and we will open a bottle of Saint Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage and plan your next book.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but dated........2006-11-07

Kermit Lynch brings some of France's greatest vintners to life with colorful portraits. His encounters are lively and well written. The crusade against over-processed wine was perhaps revolutionary in 1988 but seems a bit dated now ( not that there is not an abundance of over-processed wine now). Recommended for serious wine enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars If only more people espoused this type of attitude toward wine.......2006-09-23

It is so nice to find someone so down to earth, realistic and at the same time picky about what makes them happy in wine. He does not "score" wine, he tells you, in a beautiful manner why he likes the wines. How the back stories, mystery and people that work the land, are therefore shaped by it make wine enjoyable not an arbitrary number assigned by a certain person in Monkton, Maryland. The French attitude toward wine has morphed, even since the writing of this book, with the globalization of tastes propagated by scores and a general "sameness" with everything in our world. However living 20 minutes from Kermit Lynch's wine shop in Berkeley, I can promise you that he has not bent to any market trends, and after reading this book, perhaps neither will you.

5 out of 5 stars Tasty wine adventure.......2006-03-26

This book by Kermit Lynch, shows that reading about wine is almost as nice as drinking a nice tasteful glass of wine! You will enjoy traveling with Kevin Lynch through France. Read about the hilarious stories and while reading you will feel like a wine-taster.

Basically good information included, but the format was difficult to follow, and the type so small it was really hard to read.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for first time dog owners........2000-10-19

This book successfully guided my husband and I, first time dog owners, through all stages of adding a dog to our family. It offers advice on how to solve every problem we faced, and solved them conclusively. We found it indispensable. Although we had up to 7 dog training books that we had bought or taken out from the library, this was the one we always found the most helpful.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......1999-11-25

This book is the best book on dog training I've seen sofar. The directions are clear, with very good pictures. The method is very dog and owner friendly. The introduction is very good, the explanations and the tips are very helpful. This is a great book, and I have recommended it to a couple of friends.

The layout of this book is not only difficult to follow but provides little information that cannot be aquired elswhere and for less money. I would highly reccommend you look to another source for training information.

                          4 out of 5 stars Wonderful illustrations!.......1999-09-02

This book is far easier to understand than many other training books I have seen. It really simplifies the whole training process with it's easy to understand descriptions and wonderful illustrations.

Not all of rock's legends are musicians. Neon Park was working as a poster artist with Family Dog, a San Francisco design group, when he was asked by Frank Zappa to come to Los Angeles to paint the jacket for the next Mothers of Invention album. Park earned only $250 for his effort, and the cover was almost scrapped by Warner Brothers as too controversial, but it launched a career that would make him one of the most renowned and influential artists in the field of album cover art. Park's work combined flashy pop-art with cutting surrealist humor and visual puns, creating a complex and entertaining art that is equal parts brain food and mind candy. Features 70 color illustrations, including all of Park's album covers.

3 out of 5 stars He's jealous, but not in the way you think.......2006-08-05

If the game's fixed, then how is Charles Barkley any better than Micheal Jordan by getting money, power and fame from it-- or at least, how does he have any room to talk, just because Jordan profits MORE? He should be suing the NBA for running a crooked game, not blaming one of its pawns. I think that he just doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him, so he instead acts like a jealous dog and bites a pampered pet.

3 out of 5 stars one more word.......2000-04-23

I have mixed feelings about Michael Jordan. On the one hand, he is a great athlete. I respect his work ethic. He has turned in a number of great performances and is no doubt one of the greatest to have ever played the game of basketball.

There is a flipside. Michael Jordan got all kinds of special treatment while he was in the NBA. He was the first player I noticed who was granted all kinds of trips to the charity stripe because of unbelievably, ticky tack calls. He scored at least ten points a game at the free throw line from bogus calls. It was great when there was a picture session for 'greats of the game' with Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan. Magic told Larry not to stand too close to Michael or they might call a foul. In front of reporters and television viewers, that was a classic comment by Magic. I believe Mike got 99% of all calls in his favor because he was such a cash cow for the NBA. Dominique Wilkins was robbed of a slam dunk championship when Mike scored a perfect 50 doing the same dunk Dr. J did years before. I doubt Dr. J ever received a perfect 50 for it. Dominique's dunk was much more impressive, and he received a 49.5. Please. Mike got in a fight with Reggie Miller, and only Miller got suspended at first. Only after there was an outcry did Mike get suspended. How are Mike's punches different? Mike elbowed Kevin Johnson to the ground for all to see, and Kevin was called for blocking!

I am not too impressed that the bulls beat the lakers in the NBA finals. Magic was double teamed every game every minute he was in. On top of that, James Worthy and Byron Scott were injured. Magic and Larry never won three championships in a row because the competition, teams, and players in the 80s were much better than the nineties. Luc Longley, Will Perdue, Bill Cartwright, or Bill Wennington stopping Kareem? Ha!

Sport Magazine recently had a piece on the ten greatest moments and ten greatest players ever in the NBA. Mike was ranked number one all time player. Kudos to Mike for mentioning in 'For the love of the game' that to pick a "greatest ever" is impossible because of all the different eras and evolutions of basketball. The nineties bulls were given three of the ten greatest moments in NBA history. This is just more Mike bias. Give me a break. There are hundreds of classic and amazing moments in NBA history. One of the moments picked was Mike beating the Jazz in the final minutes of his last game. He put his hand on Bryon Russel's backside and shoved him out of the way. Then Mike made the game winnig shot. All eyes were on Mike, but the ref did not make the obvious call.

There is also Mike's arrogance. According to him, Wilt Chamberlain was a fluke eventhough Wilt was a great all around player. He made a comment about Magic and Larry reaching a 'certain level of greatness' and that the two were not good on defense. What? Are we talking about the same Larry Bird? Shaquille Oneal is also much better and much improved than Mike gives him credit for. Shaq has turned into a solid defender, passer, and he works hard at both ends of the floor.

Mike's corporate poster boy behavior is laughable. He did ads for AT&T and then MCI. The Wayans family is also split between the two companies. Mike talked about the enviroment in Rayovac ads and then pitches hot dogs? Mike is not the only athlete who will pitch anything and everything to make millions. I wonder if Mike has checked into Nike's labor practices.

Players like Mike and Charles Barkley soured me on the NBA. Charles played like a thug and got away with it because he was a star. Plus, Charles insisted on wearing number 34 at Philadelphia eventhough it was retired for NBA great Billy Cunningham. The star treatment and inflated egos has grown old, and that has turned a lot of people off to sports. I miss the Lakers and Celtics match ups of the 1980s.

This book is exacatly what I wanted. It showed evert thing I expected and wanted. I not only shows the life and work of his lustrous but on his life before he was the most fundimenally sound basketball player. It showed that not only does he play basketball but it showed that he played 3 other sports. When I read this book I thought it would be like every other book on him saying how great he is and all his great feats. It did but at the same time it showed how he achieved it. It shows you how many times it took and what it takes to be the greatest ball player in the world.

4 out of 5 stars Great for MJ fans, not bad for non-fan either.......1999-03-14

A book filled with comments from MJ's peers and celebrity admirers. Would've liked more, but a good one to add to your collection.
