I've read several first novels this summer and this one is my favorite. I began, trying to be a critical reviewer, but was caught up in the story, the development of the characters and their interaction. It was so real that I found myself wanting to reach out, to comfort, to encourage each relationship. The surprising thing is that Ms. Perabo is so young to have such an understanding of the complexities of human relationships with their ebb and flow. If someone doesn't make a movie of this novel they are missing a sure hit! I look forward to more from Ms. Perabo! By the way, I make sure that everyone of my grandchildren's grade school teachers gets a present of her book "Writers in the Schools: a Guide to Teaching Creative Writing in the Classroom" to start each school year! If you have children, or grandchildren, you'll want to read that too!

There are books that you read in a few hours, there are books you only read now and then, and then there are books that you begin reading Saturday morning and don't put down until the sun is already well across the sky, becuase you can't. One of the most interesting things about The Broken Places is through out a great deal of the story there is no great physical action taking place, and yet you feel pulled to turn the page. I enjoy the way Ms. Parebo allows you to see the story from different points of view, and feel the changes that happen in people as they come to grips with who they really are. The Broken places is a story about truth, and how different that can be to each person effected by one event. How refreshing to see someone acknowledge that in a story that isn't always comfortable.

In this novel, Perabo deftly examines the myths that inform our lives, our families, our communities, and the way those myths are distorted by pressures that gather within the very structures they try to explain. Heroism, self-sacrifice, and grace under pressure all become corrosive elements within the small and fragile family she depicts through the eyes of its 12 year old son, Paul Tucker. The novel moves us with its characters as it forces us to think about its ideas, with just enough suspense thrown into the mix to keep us turning pages. Spare and haunting, smart and unblinking, a wonderful first novel.

I loved this book. The style is beautifully simple and unsentimental--a bit like Raymond Carver or Tobias Wolff, only things actually happen. The story centers around the young son of a fireman involved in an accident, and it takes some surprising yet plausible turns. The characters are very real and complicated, and you keep seeing them differently as the novel progresses. Funny and wise by turns. I wished it was longer.

Place-holder.......2007-03-05
Having just returned to this series after a long hiatus, I have to admit that it was a pleasure to spend a little more time with Relkin, Bazil, the other legionnaires, and the various ancillary characters. And it gradually occurred to me that this seemed to be the novel's reason for being; a place-holder, to keep the "franchise" alive. The dragons; their dragonboys; Lagdalen; Lessis; Captain Kesepton; each character gets his or her turn on the stage, in the service of defeating an enemy who is constantly described as more powerful and deadly than any they have faced before, yet who is dispatched in a rather perfunctory manner.
If the book has a weakness, that's it: that at no time does Rowley really convince the reader that the heroes are in lasting danger, and even the most willing suspension of disbelief isn't enough to make us think that the bad guys might win. The novel has a very generic feel that is perfectly encapsulated in the title (which couldn't be less specific to this particular nook if it tried), and the action all takes place within spitting distance of the dragons' home base, with the most exotic locale being a country house that the villain has appropriated as his headquarters (a cobbled-together "civil war" serving as impetus for the fighting within the legion's home territory).
Though I haven't yet gotten around to the final volume, Dragon Ultimate, I get the impression that my enjoyment of it probably wouldn't be hampered much if I had skipped The Dragons of Argonath altogether. Mind you, I wouldn't dream of skipping it; and that, in truth, is the best comment I can make. I wouldn't think of missing a chance to listen to the dragons brag or their dragonboys bicker and fight; I only wish that their actions mattered more this time around.

as i have said the best series i have ever read. However, one of the things i look foward to reading about is the places they go see, and this, just wasnt very exciting. The story stayed very local, and that was a dissapointment, but again the action that was written, was excellent, as usual. i do hope that if you have read all the books thus far that you keep going, because the best is yet to come. and each book adds a little more to the story.

There are no words to decsribe the loss or loosing of a loved one. What Mr. Edwards has done places a whole new emphasis on death (our physical) and life afterwards. As with all his books, God's love comes through with every word. I will never look at death the same way again.

Hughes does a marvelous thing in his two novels: he makes a seminary professor into something of an action hero, without requiring him to do out-of-character physical stunts. Yes, the cereberal spiritual types can be super heroes--mostly by trusting their God.
Another strength for the Fallen/Eternity Gene series is that the belief that demons might appear as aliens, or as the gods of the B.C. era is played out intelligently. It was particularly useful for Hughes to show the demons to be limited, uncreative, and often defeated by their own depravity. Human characters who take their work seriously, but barter their souls foolishly, others who follow the rules--and admonish those who don't--even when the rule-makers are demons (shades of Nazi Germany here), and other such subplots and vignettes made this a stimulating novel.
Bottom-line: Hughes two-part series is intelligent, well-paced, and yet reads comfortably. I doubt they will get the exposure and sales they deserve, but readers ought to treat themselves to these "sleeper gems." The one pitfall for Eternity Gene is that readers will not be able to fully enjoy it without reading the Fallen first.

history and religion. Any history buff will love its way of revisiting historical places in modern terms. All lovers of God's
Word will enjoy how the main character handles himself in unusual
predicaments. Excellent dialogue.

I purchased this as a shower gift. I had two different brides getting, and Betty had two different but similar cookbooks. So I gave one to each of the gals. My hope is that they will be as well worn and used as the Betty Crocker Cookbook I received as a shower gift 30 plus years ago.

Every page features color illustrations and offers an excellent variety of both classic and "foodie" recipes - The bridal edition was a gift and it was beautiful - the bride loved it!

This Bridal Edition of the well known Betty Crocker Cookbook was a big hit at the bridaly shower where I gave it as a gift. The book is beautiful - from the cover all the way through. Plenty of room for the newlyweds to make it their cookbook by adding notes, comments and important dates. The recipes were accompanied by lovely how-to photographs as well as finished product photos. Because it was unique it was passed around for all to see and everyone from the bride to the groom at home found it a delightful and personal gift.

I purchased this as a shower present.
I still have the Betty Crocker cookbook I received 30 plus years ago as a shower gift. It is well worn and used with pages now falling out of it.
My hope is that this book will be as well worn and used by this new bride.
What I did like about this cookbook is the nutrition info given after each recipe, calories, fat grams etc.

I received this book as a gift from my mother when I got engaged and I love it! It is similar to other Betty Crocker cookbooks but with great updates! I particularly like it for the baking recipes and appetizers. It is one of the cookbooks I use the most.

Okay, I'm biased. I'm proud to have been a contributer and some small way to making this book possible. And it's a great book. If you have a Corgi (Pem or Cardi) or a Corgi mix, there are tips in here from some really experienced people. And stories, recipes (people and dog oriented) and pictures. A real delight for those of us who love the breeds. And if you're thinking about getting one, there's advice on how to pick one out, where to find one (hint, not at the pet store) and how to raise a well behaved dog. Not everybody's cut out to be a Corgi owner, but this book can hopefully help you decide.
And it benefits CorgiAid. I can't think of a better way to contribute to a great cause and get something useful in return.

My wife and I have owned two cardigan welsh corgi's and they are the only breed for us. Bright, loving, beautiful, stubborn, loyal and hilarious, our two dogs have given us years of joy.
When our oldest died just three weeks short of his 17th birthday, we bought this book based on other reader's reviews in hopes of learning some information about breeders and how to deal with some behavioral issues exhibited by our now seven year-old, Morton. The book provided valuable knowledge and insights about these and other topics. If you're going to buy a book to learn about how to get your own corgi and raise him or her, this is the best volume I've read on the subject.

Everything you want to know or need to know about the two breeds. An excellent book on how to raise, train and care for any dog.
One thing I do not understand though, is why more people don't own corgis. They're not huge dogs, but they think they are and are one of the most trainable of dogs, plus they are a laugh a minute because no one can convince them they aren't "people". You just need to let them know who is the alpha and who isn't. It doesn't take them long to figure this out, either. It is because, as I said, they are one of the most trainable of dogs.

I bought this book while I was still puppy-hunting, and it was great. It has lots of tips and breed-specific info about both Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and was invaluable in helping me locate a good breeder and find the best puppy for us. It also has great tips for when you first bring your puppy home, and is full of gorgeous color pictures. A+.
A great introduction to a wonderful breed of dogs.......2003-07-04
If you already are familiar with the corgi breed, you'll love this book because it's filled with marvelously appealing photos of corgi puppies! There's an unusual number of great photos, unusual even for a book about the breed.
The book also is right on the money with advice on how to raise your corgi to avoid behavior problems. These are working dogs, and if they are trained properly (and it's easy) they are a delight, but without that training they can dominate the household and be a real nuisanced. It's clear that the author knows a lot about the breed.
Most dog books are about dogs in general, with little about the particular breed. You get the impression that there's a general dog book on the word processor that's customized slightly for each breed. This is a book about corgis, written to be just about corgis, and full of great information that's useful for every corgi owner.

The problem with many dog-related books is that they contain a few dozen pages related to the breed & the rest is filled with generic information that pertains to all breeds. This book in particular deals with corgis the whole way through. A great deal of helpful information concerning corgis appears within.

We purchased this book to help us learn more about Corgis, as we were pretty sure we wanted to add a Corgi to our family. This is a concise book, with much Corgi-specific info (though the requisite all-dog info sneaks in, too). Great photos. Showed it to a breeder, and she liked it a lot, too.
Not Everything I Was Hoping For.......2000-10-08
This book was informative on generally on how to care for, train and breed a dog. It explained the history and physical traits of the two Corgis,and had many great photos. My main problem with the book is that it did not go into details of the behavior and personality of Corgis. Already being the owner of a Pembroke, my hope for this kind of information was my main motive for buying this book. Overall, this seemed more like a book about dog care with some Corgi topics included rather than a book devoted to Corgi specifics. Still, the price is reasonable,and the book easy to read and reference. If you are a new owner of a Corgi, or looking to get one, without any dog info book yet, you should be satisfied with this. But, if you are looking to get a more detailed account of Corgi personality and ability, you may not be. I have not read any of the other Corgi books, so can not compare.

This book holds all the information any collector will need. I found it to be very useful.
Excellent Companion to Robert L Miller's No. 1 Price Guide.......2006-11-18
I was hesitant to purchase Luckey's 12th Edition Price Guide because I have always relied on Robert L. Miller's No. 1 Price Guide in the past. However, curiosity got the better of me and I'm glad it did. It's a great reference, and a very good companion to Miller's guide. The main advantage Miller's 10th Edition No. 1 Price Guide has is all figurines are now shown in color... but the images are smaller than in previous editions. Since Luckey's guide (updated by Dean Genth) is presented in a larger format, it has larger images and text, which makes it easier to read. It also displays more images of the older trademark figurines to show the differences between the older figurines and their current production versions a bit better. This was important to me because I generally prefer to collect the older, more rare figurines.
Figurine pricing is now essentially the same between the two guides, which isn't surprising considering Dean Genth owns Miller's Hallmark in Eaton, OH, the home of Robert Miller.
For the average collector, or one that usually tends to purchase the newer released items, Robert Miller's guide is now more up to date. However, for the truly serious collector, Luckey's guide has more or different information on some of the more rare figurines such as those made in white overglaze and sold only in Belgium in the early days. Since I own several of these figurines, I found the information contained in Lucky's guide very useful.
Highly recommended for both the novice or serious collector... but don't forget to purchase Miller's book too.

The greatest book for serious Hummel Collectors!.......2000-06-04
I have quiet a few Hummel books, but Luckey's Hummel Figurines and Plates, 11nd Edition is my favorite. The book did educate me in the different Trade Marks on the bottom of the Figurines, The Authors explanation is simple and clear. I purchased many Hummel figurines at Internet Auctions and found that the "Current Value" prices of Mr. Luckey's book are very conservative and very closed to the final Auction prices! This is a great beginner book for those who want to try to make their own personal care products. Easy to follow recipes using products that are readily available at your local health food store with some being available at your regular grocery store. Good variety of recipes.
Scent Sensitivity and the Beauty Products Junkie.......2001-09-14
For me, it was love at first glimpse. I grabbed this book and raced to the nearest checkout lane. I couldn't wait to get home and read it from cover to cover.
I am a self-proclaimed "beauty Products Junkie" and addict. There are worse things to be addicted to. My one problem is that I have fairly sensitive skin and am sensitive to overpowering scents. I also get migraines on a regular basis.
There's nothing worse for a migraineur and cosmetic-junkie than to get home with a fabulous new product, only to realize that the scent makes you sick! This book teaches you how to make your own homemade products with your own custom-blended scents. I am now able to smell good and FEEL good at the same time.
I've discovered which scents I like and can tolerate and am able to make products with those scents using fragrance and essential oils. Don't limit yourself to the fragrance and essential oils available to you in your town or city, however. Explore the internet for websites that sell fragrance oils and essential oils. You will find many, many different scents. Choose an odd one and you'll be guaranteed not to wear the same fragrance as your friends and co-workers do!
GOOD INFORMATION - BUT WHO HAS THE TIME?.......2001-03-03
What I did like about this book is the fact that it truly is a book based on natural products you can make yourself, and if it is a natural ingredient, it probably is healthy. The one thing that puzzles me, is where on Earth are busy, working people going to find the time to not only go out and purchase some of these little basic ingredients, but find the time to mix up the wonderful little potions and lotions? I have a top-management position and a family that keeps me going from sunup to sundown. Then, there is the clean-up afterward. With all the brands in existence today, I cannot for the life of me figure out why I would want to make my own toothpaste! I barely have time to brush my teeth, let alone make the toothpaste. If I am fortunate enough that my husband has time to give me a message at the end of the day, there are times when I would not know if he was using an exotic message oil or WD-40 for his car!
For those people on a limited budget, by the time you run around and buy the basic ingredients(even "basic" can be expensive today,) I cannot see where this would really be a great money saver. "Dollar Stores" sell the finished product for less than some of these basic ingredients, and it is certainly not a time saver. Is it better for you....worth the hassle? I guess that is a matter of personal opinion. As for the book, it was ... in Canadian funds and definitely not worth the price!

Groaning Tears examines suicide in Greek tragedy in light of the fifth-century ethical climate. No full-scale work has previously been devoted to this pervasive topic. The particular focus of identifying suicide as a response to the expectations of popular ethics and social demands makes it useful for scholars and students of drama, ethics and sociology. Chapter one establishes the ethical background of audiences in the fifth century while chapters two through five examine suicide in the context of whole plays based on motivational distinctions: to avoid disgrace and preserve an honorable reputation; to avoid further suffering; to end grief; and to sacrifice oneself for a greater good. The final chapter considers a drama of lighter tone that presents suicide in all of its ethical and theatrical aspects.

Like Detroit... feels barren.......2003-02-07
I really wanted to like this book. Alas, it's a good idea poorly executed. Beginning with its misleading title (quite a bit of the artwork is found outside the confines of Detroit City Limits), Art in Detroit Public Places is a narrow paperback stuffed with photographs and descriptions of public works of art in the Metro area.
Each mosaic, statue, or sculpture is given a lone, poorly reproduced black and white picture apparently taken from the same angle by David Clements. How can a picture snapped from across the street capture the impact of something like The Heidelberg Project? A solitary monochromatic image eschews the splendor of the enormous collection of junk with its telephone poles decorated with doll heads and artist Tyree Guyton's ever-present motif of playful polka dots. I've seen inept tourists take better pictures.
Alongside these pictures, Dennis Alan Nawrocki pens sketchy descriptions of the works, their creators, and their current status. It's rather ironic that this is the second edition of the work as the writing is aggravatingly set in the present. One would hope that the language would be given a more indefinite time frame. Instead of saying "recently" or "currently," it'd be smarter to have dates cited.
Even the maps that precede each of the five sections of the book are problematic. These graphics are slightly better than if a dot-matrix printer had produced them. In addition, very little effort would need to be expended to list the location of the artwork in succeeding pages on these maps. While this might seem a trifling issue, it exemplifies how Art in Detroit Public Places is an overly ambitious, under-produced mess. (ISBN: 0814327028)
