Book Description

The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel gathers together the complete work of a writer whose voice is as singular and astonishing as any in American fiction. Hempel, fiercely admired by writers and reviewers, has a sterling reputation that is based on four very short collections of stories, roughly fifteen thousand stunning sentences, written over a period of nearly three decades. These are stories about people who make choices that seem inevitable, whose longings and misgivings evoke eternal human experience. With compassion, wit, and the acutest eye, Hempel observes the marriages, minor disasters, and moments of revelation in an uneasy America.

When Reasons to Live, Hempel's first collection, was published in 1985, readers encountered a pitch-perfect voice in fiction and an unsettling assessment of the culture. That collection includes "San Francisco," which Alan Cheuse in The Chicago Tribune called "arguably the finest short story composed by any living writer." In At the Gates of the Animal Kingdom, her second collection, frequently compared to the work of Raymond Carver, Hempel refined and developed her unique grace and style and her unerring instinct for the moment that defines a character. Also included here, in their entirety, are the collections Tumble Home and The Dog of the Marriage. As Rick Moody says of the title novella in Tumble Home, "the leap in mastery, in seriousness, and sheer literary purpose was inspiring to behold.... And yet," he continues, "The Dog of the Marriage, the fourth collection, is even better than the other three...a triumph, in fact."

The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel is the perfect opportunity for readers of contemporary American fiction to catch up to one of its masters. Moody's passionate and illuminating introduction celebrates both the appeal and the importance of Hempel's work.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As a collection stands this is excellent!.......2007-10-01

As with most collections, instead of selections, the work of the author can be somewhat marginal. I would say that the first two collections, " Reasons to Live," and,"At the Gates of the Animal Kingdom," show an author with extreme talent, yet is still in the midst of finding her voice. "Tumble Home," and ,"The Dog of the Marriage," really show you what Hempel can do. She's very original so I struggle with thinking of a name to compare her with. Hempels' work reads like poetry. She is imagistic. She can be called minimalist, but no other minimalist I know of can pack a life into so few pages, with such grace. And she is always, ALWAYS, funny. I will say that she is not for most, her work should be read more than once, as often enough the true beauty of the story will not be accesible the first time. If you love Nora Roberts then steer clear of the Hempel! A true enjoyment to read.

1 out of 5 stars Completely Overrated.......2007-09-25

I read the rave reviews and decided to give this a try and I was very disappointed. I think she tries a bit too hard to be funny and there does not seem to be a theme at all. She goes for 'sophistication' beneath 'simplicity' and I guess it worked for the reviewers. But I see nothing fresh here and the entire thing is contrived. I stopped reading at page 247 after three grueling evenings. The style, the content, the sentences... nothing in here was worth it for me.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting mind.......2007-09-03

Amy Hempel writes about what goes on in our imagination but we don't usually say out loud. She has an enchanting style, a unique point of view and a very intelligent approach and way of looking at otherwise average situations. I experienced a few laugh out loud moments reading this, recommended it to friends and family and they all recognized a similarity to my strange imagination and somewhat silly, introspective mind.

5 out of 5 stars Pure narration............2007-06-27

It's all in that word. If you like reading stories - every kind of story - this is THE book for you. Amy Hempel's writing style is simply perfect.

1 out of 5 stars Hugely overrated.......2007-06-12

I believed the hype about this author. Her books were impossible to find and going for huge prices on the Internet, and Chuck Palahniuk said she was great, so she had to be good, right? Nope. I read the collection shortly after it became available, and again recently, thinking I might find it better with re-reading. As several others have said, these stories are disappointing. Frankly they remind me of the pretentious horse pucky a lot of us turned out in college creative writing classes.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide to the War of Princes.......2003-12-16

Tactics, siegecraft, naval battle... its all described in this "war book" for the new Dark Ages line from White Wolf.

Just in case you are figuring that you don't plan to play Vampire, but are in the mood for another DA game, be it Mage, Inquisitor, or Werewolf; they have rules for all of them here too.

Frankly it is a brilliant move that is way to long in the coming: put out a source book that covers your entire spread of books. Not one book of combat abilities for each character type you have available to you.

This book delivers what it promises to: how to make war in the Dark Ages, particularly against other supernatural opponents.

3 out of 5 stars a slight dissapointment.......2005-08-05

this book was slightly dissapointing. for starters, there were too few monster battles. another thing was the ending. they should not have left godzilla to be buried alive! however i did enoy this book

5 out of 5 stars Great for G lovers.......2002-12-03

I loved it. It included some great monsters like Gigan, Megalon, Hedorah, and Biollante. I do like seeing Megalon and Gigan in serious roles because the old films made them to be mindless space monsters. I recommend it to any and all.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite finished.......2002-02-11

When I first started reading this book I could'nt stop , But before I could finish my dog tore it to shreds , so for over a year I've been reading online summaries of the book to make this review.

1 out of 5 stars Godawful.......2000-10-19

I am a MAJOR Godzilla fan, so ofcourse when i saw this book ibought it. Ha! Marc Cerasini claims to be a big Godzilla fan, yet he is ruining the whole series with his horrible novels. First MAJOR mistake is his is mixing the Monster series with the Hensi series. Are we to believe that Megalon, the goofiest of the monster (not including Gabbera cause he was make believe in a childs dream) is in the same story as Biollante and Battra? I mean your mixing serious Godzilla with the goofy 70's Godzilla. If you were to take Biollante and Battra out mabey, MABEY this book might actully be worthy of having the title of Godzilla on the cover. Infact the cover is the only highlight of the book. I dont like how the new wave of Godzilla books are totaly destroying the Godzilla Series its self. I own ALOT of imported godzilla toys and posters, but ill never buy these American books agian. Shame on you Marc Cerasini. Dont buy this book if your a serious hardcore Godzilla Fan!

4 out of 5 stars Godzilla returns to save the world and this book (almost)........2000-03-25

This sequel picks up after Godzilla 2000 ends (appropiately enough). There are plenty of in-joke references to Emmerich and Devlin's Independence Day and their own Godzilla film's add compaign. There are also references to other classic SF flicks, notably John Carpenter's superlative version of The Thing, and H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulthu Mythos stories. Sadly the humans eclipse some of the monster action, so this feels kind of slow mving. Kaiju classic creatures Megalon and Hedorah (aka The Smog Monster) feel tacked on rather than integral parts of the main plot. But the ending is nothing short of incredible and leaves the reader wanting more. If only the monsters had been better handled, this would have garnered five stars. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Eating more healthfully with fish?.......2005-04-30

For those looking to eat more fish and less meat for health reasons, such as the need to reduce saturated fats in the diet, this cookbook offers some wonderful recipes prepared in a variety of ways--using the grill, broiler, oven, soup pot, and frying pan. The recipes use a wide variety of fish and shellfish, including suggested alternatives for some of the more esoteric choices (monkfish, pompano, skate) not always available away from the coast. Recipes range from "simple suppers" to fancier, special occasion preparations, and each recipe is accompanied by an attractive full-page photo of a beautiful presentation.

Cooks looking for a complex blend of flavors to set off the fish (especially in sauces) will find that many of these recipes depend instead on only one or two ingredients for their primary flavors--a red snapper recipe is flavored with rosemary and pernod, cod flavored with vegetables and basil, and skate with brown butter and lemon juice. Those who enjoy fruit with their fish may enjoy the halibut with oranges and molasses, salmon with fennel and apple salsa, and salmon with a sauce of mango juice.

Many of the recipes show elaborate presentations--oven-poached whole salmon covered with 1/16" slices of English cucumbers, and orange roughy with 1/8" zucchini slices, easy to do if you have a food processor but a bit fussy to assemble. The halibut fillet en papillote can be prepared ahead, so the "fuss" is done before the guests arrive. Those who plan to cook fish on the grill will need to plan for split-second timing of the grilling and the presentation, and to be sure to have the correct implements for turning the fish to avoid shredding it on the hot grill, a reason many people avoid grilling fish for guests.

Those on low fat diets need to be aware that several of these recipes call for high-fat cooking and sauces--fillets of sole meuniere calls for 6 T. of butter, trout amandine for 4 T. of butter and 4 T. olive oil, the skate with brown butter sauce for 8 T. butter, the striped bass in green curry for 14 oz. of coconut milk (very high in saturated fat), and the New England fish chowder for 1 c. half-and-half and 1 ½ c. of whole milk. Still the selection of forty-two recipes, both fish and shellfish, offers many new ideas for the cook who needs inspiration, and some recipes can be adapted to lower fat cooking.

Note: Williams Sonoma has an earlier Fish cookbook by Joyce Esersky Goldstein, available Used. The recipes in the Goldstein edition are heartier in flavor and less fussy in preparation and presentation. Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Excellent basic fish cookbook.......2003-12-08

I took the Williams-Sonoma "Fish" cookbook out from my local library and was fairly impressed with it. I have a number of seafood cookbooks in my personal collection, but there are several things I really like about this book. First off, though the book is not large, it covers all the essential seafood recipes, such as gravlax, bouillabaisse, chowder, paella, crabcakes, boiled lobster, fish and chips, sole in lemon-butter sauce, etc. Rest assured, the book contains at least one good recipe for every major type of fish or shellfish, so it is a good basic reference to have. Every recipe features a photo of the completed dish on the opposite page, often featuring a very nice presentation. Most importantly, and something that is lacking in far too many cookbooks: the recipes are laid out on the page in a very clear and organized fashion. A list of the ingredients is on the left, the recipe instructions are in the middle, and a small photo with notes is on the right. There are also helpful hints and serving tips at the bottom of the page. This makes it very easy to size up the recipes and take them on. Also included at the back of the book are tips on selecting and cleaning fish, advice on different cooking methods, and a glossary covering attributes of different fish species. Whether you're a beginner cook or an experienced amateur such as myself, this book will improve your knowledge and technique of fish cookery.

5 out of 5 stars Book of the Bitch - not Book of Pregnancy, Whelping, etc.......2006-04-24

This book is a bible for many serious dog breeders out there. When someone recently asked a group of people at a national dog show for recommendations on whelping books - we ALL had and suggested this one. With that being said, this is NOT a book about pregnancy and whelping ( although that is covered of course). This book is about the owning a bitch and all the things that go with it from purchasing the dog to medical problems to placing puppies. It is complete and detailed. I pull it off my shelf for any bitch concern for reference and it (and the kit that they suggest) has sat beside me with every litter I have ever whelped.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of work.......2001-10-11

Excellent reading; a must-have for beginners and useful to breeders too

        1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing........2001-05-02

I do not care for this book at all. I would expect a book devoted to bitches to have a bit more on pregnancy. I have read, many many books on dogs, dog genetics, breeding, showing etc and this one is on the bottom of my list. It came across as very generic to me. Also, as a serious dog fancier, exhibitor and fancier I didn't particularly like hearing the words income and market used when referring to dog breeding.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book for the first time breeder or female dog owner.......2000-07-31

Last year I bred my bitch for the first time. She is a very successful and valuable show bitch as well as a much loved family pet and I wanted to do EVERYTHING right for her sake.

I looked for information wherever I could find it and sought to buy a good book on whelping etc for the big event. I bought this book at a dog show and never looked back. It covers everything from buying a bitch puppy to her maturity, breeding and any associated health problems she may experience during her lifetime.

This book was my bible during this time and is now a little worse for wear after the experience. : ) It's been highlighted, flicked through - you name it. A friend of mine recently borrowed it for her litter - not her first... and she got as much out of it as I did as a first time breeder.

I'll be keeping this book for as long as I'm in dogs.... and if I sell any bitch puppies, I will give them a copy of this book as well. Every bitch owner should have a copy in my opinion. It's easy to read, goes through all you need to know without an overload of unecessary information. I'd heartily recommend it.

As in her previous book on Scarves and Shawls, she has delivered a beautifully photographed and produced book, with stylish designs and interesting techniques. I bought this book for its section on what she calls diagonal knitting, which differs from what is usually called diagonal knitting by being divided into stocking stitch and garter stitch squares. It is very attractive. However, as was also a flaw in her previous book, some of the garments would cost well into the hundreds of dollars to make as they are knit in Prism yarns. I don't feel it is necessary to spend more for yarn for one garment than for a month's health insurance.

                Book Description

This book is a funny, sometimes "tear-jerking" account of the lives of Jim and Maxine Rayburn. Jim is best known as the founder of Young Life, a worldwide work with teenagers. It must be said, however, that Jim was uncomfortable being introduced as the founder of Young Life, as he never knew he was founding anything (his own words). It is a beautiful, tragic story of a man of God with unbounded faith and an unconventional Christianity. It would be impossible to measure the impact of Jim Rayburnas life on countless multitudes of people throughout the world.

It was Jim Rayburn who said, "If you want people to come to Sunday school, don't have it on Sunday and don't call it school." Such thinking broke with traditional concepts and antagonized many, yet it carried Rayburn into new, uncharted territory. Before long Jim was packing them in - over 400 high school kids filled the local mortuary each Tuesday night to hear Jim talk about Jesus Christ and His love for them. Even the high school football coaches were helpless in the face of Jim's charisma, asking him to schedule his meetings with their need to practice in mind. The world may have never seen a "minister" like this; it certainly hasn't seen many.

Suffering severe migraines, battling dependence on prescription drugs, struggling with his marriage, and facing opposition from a board of directors that wanted more stability within the organization, Jim Rayburn seldom looked down and never looked back. He had the habit of thinking big, and sometimes his ideas caromed off the walls of Christianity.

Written by his son, Jim Rayburn III, this is a story that will grab you, one way or the other. Be careful before you order it; use caution. This story might cause you to miss a night or two of sleep; it is not an easy book to put down. It might also be a stepping stone to a deeper, richer, freer, more exciting and more intimate relationship with God.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring biography--that could change your life!.......2005-07-12

I read this book while spending a week at a Young Life camp facility, and found it very inspiring and challenging. It is the biography of Jim Rayburn, Jr., written by his son. Mr. Rayburn confronted many obstacles in his life, but pressed on in serving the Lord in spite of the adversity. He was apparently a very winsom, energetic, charismatic individual and the book conveys his personality well. I finished reading this work inspired to let God be greater in me.

5 out of 5 stars All things are possible, only believe........2000-06-04

Jim Rayburn III has captured the spirit of a great movement that has made the world a better place to live. Jim Rayburn, the author's father and founder of Young Life lived a life committed to sharing God's love with young people. This is an important book for anyone who wishes to know the inside story of a person dedicated to serving God. It is a life high "highs" and low "lows". It is a life of pain, tragedy, disappointment, felt betrayal and a life of joy, faith, love, compassion and humor. It is a life of prayer and close commumion with the Almighty. Jim III has openly shared the inside struggles of his family as well as the inside struggles of the organization of Young Life. This book will be an encouragement to any unafraid to confront a great truth, that great accomplishments can be experienced in the middle of great pain.

5 out of 5 stars From Bondage to Liberty, Dance, Children, Dance.......2000-04-30

This book was one of the more "impacting" pieces of literature I have picked up in a long time. It's the inspirational story of a man's desire for rich intimacy with God, and his burning love affair with The Savior. Throughout the story, miracles unfold one by one before the readers eyes. This book played a significant role in my desire to join the Young Life staff four years ago in Littleton, Colorado. I have been inspired by Jim's love for kids as I continue to invest my life in those at Columbine High School. As I reflect on this story, it makes me regretful-that I have only one life to give for Christ.

5 out of 5 stars A Primary Source Insight to Young Life and Jim Rayburn.......2000-03-20

If the mission of Young Life played a role in your life at any level; whether as a "club kid", camper, committee member, staff, or volunteer, then Bondage to Liberty, Dance Children Dance is essential reading for you. To understand the mission, you must understand the man God chose to initiate it, Jim Rayburn Jr. His son, Jim Rayburn III, provides the means to understand that man in this book. Primary source materials including personal journals, "club talks", and first-hand observations shed light on Jim's character and internal thought processes, personal relationships, incredible prayer life, and personal spiritual highs and lows. Photographs and expanded captions add much to the painting of Jim's portrait. More than a simple biography, Bondage to Liberty honestly examines the lives of Jim and Maxine Rayburn, their human struggles, frailties, shortcomings, and the miraculous work accomplished through them. In the process, it opens a window into Jim's relationship to his Heavenly Father and his God-sized vision for reaching teens with the message of the Christian faith in terms they could relate to. More than just documenting a work with youth, Bondage to Liberty reveals the varied spectrum of Young Life's history from its conceptual beginnings in the rural Southwest, to the anointed growth and impact during its early decades, through its tumultuous social and corporate growing pains, and on to its current condition today. In the context of the story of this man and his work, we are reminded that making an impact with teenagers, or anyone in this world, has more to do with love than it does logistics, requires availability more that it does capability, and demands faith rather than fancy formulas. Just as with the mission it documents, Jesus Christ and knowing real life in Him isn't just one thing Bondage to Liberty is about, its all Bondage to Liberty is about.

5 out of 5 stars "From Bondage to Liberty...".......2000-03-06

This is a must read for any person willing to examine the life he/she leads. What a great way to delve into the questions: "Does God exist?" "How does he work in people's lives today?" and "Is it worth it?" It's not only a first-hand look at Jim and Maxine Rayburn from the inside, but a beautiful glimpse of the workings of Christ in modern times. Whether Christian or not, this book promises to deliver on every level: it will make you laugh, cry, examine your own life, and challenge your thoughts. Jim Rayburn III hit the nail on the head with this amazing story of his father, the founder of Young Life, the legacy he left behind, and the torment he went through due to his humanness. As a former Young Life kid, I owe a lot to his first convictions. You will, too.
