The plot is described in the other reviews. The book is boring. The main character, computer resistant, is boring. The dreary descriptions of boring streets in Toronto made me put the book down and return it to the library. I love a good murder mystery and this is not one of them.

this book was such a disappointment, I almost didn't read
Memory Book which is yes, set in the same hospital but as Howard says, from a different set of eyes.
This confused experiment with Wright is flawed. An interesting try and a dismal failure. To then go on and write Memory Book, well Oliver Sacks should know when an achievement is outstanding.
Life is short - skip this - read Memory Book which deserves every award possible. Go Benny, go!

Change Comes To Grantham.......2003-12-06

Well, it had to happen. After so many years of stability - the same shops, the same hangouts, the same neighbours - change had to come to Benny Cooperman. Many of the stores in Grantham are closing or changing owners. Benny is urged by Frank Bushmill, his neighbour and friend, to change too. He urges Benny to go on a holiday. Instead, Benny finds himself acting as a bodyguard to an old high school heartthrob, who is now a major executive with a television network. She returned home to find that a houseguest had been shot dead. Stella, or Vannessa as she is now known, is afraid that she was the intended target. Benny looks into the case and finds himself entangled in office politics, corrupt lawyers and musical stars. Meanwhile, Benny leads the cops to the real killer. As usual, an excellent read, and one of the better in the series, I think.

Set before all the true game books, this is the story of Mavin when she
was younger. Shapeshifters are an odd bunch, and the women are seen as
important breeding resources. Mavin and her sister aren't big fans of
that, and they bail.

Mavin's trilogy is a prequel to Sheri Tepper's stories of the lands of the True Game. When we meet the famous shape-changer in the other six novels, she is a grown adult. We know her as Peter's mother and Himaggery's sometimes lover, but mostly she is an occasional actor whose critical importance to the series only flowers at the end. However, Mavin is a spectacular person all on her own, and with this novel we start with her beginnings in Danderbat keep.

Shape-changer culture is more than a little odd. The ability to be almost anything creates a certain tricksy attitude and a need for a very different set of rules than apply to other gamesmen. In Danderbat, female shape-changers are rare, and their lot is to bear children for the keep before they can find their own freedom. This is not a very pleasant fate, and Mavin's sister Handbright, unable to conceive, has been thoroughly worn down by the pressures of being an available resource. When Mavin's talent finally surfaces, she has no desire to take Handbright's place. Instead, she works her sister's release, and then escapes with Mertyn, her brother.

On her way to another shifters' keep, Mavin falls in with the entourage of the seer Windlow who is gathering students for the school he is starting at High Demesne. A stop at Pfarb Durim on the way exposes Mertyn to ghoul-plague, which has been released by Blourbast. He is a gamesman of extremely indelicate tastes whose demesne is Poffle, called Hell's Maw by most. Blourbast's hunger for the Shadowpeople is the source of the infection. And since Healers refuse to come to Poffle or Pfarb Durim, only the Shadowpeople can undo the infection.

But for them to do that they need the return of a special token, a gift from the Ganver the Eestie. Mavin to the rescue, of course. But not without several unnerving experiences and a great deal of self-discovery. The shape-changer's unorthodox mind defamiliarizes what was already the unpredictable world of the True Game.

Readers of the first six books in this series will find many old friends (and enemies) who appear here (pre-appear here?) for the first time. Prepare for the appearances of Huld and Huldra, Proom, the Wizard Himaggery, Mertyn, Windlow and countless others too numerous to name. The tale's richness comes from its connections to the earlier tales that follow it as well as its own narrative uniqueness. It can almost stand alone, or be read first, but the story relies on some experience of the True Game to make complete sense.

Everybook in this series is excellent. I have read this entire series more times than I can remember and enjoyed every word. These are the books I want in my coffin (with a light) in case eternity gets boring! It doesn't matter whether you are 5, 15 or 55, these books have a story for you.

Enjoyable.......2000-01-22

This is the first of the Chronicles of Mavin Manyshaped trilogy, which collectively are the prequel to the three books that make up The True Game. Here we learn something of Mavin's early life, along with her brother Mertyn and the Wizard Himaggery, and the plot is set up for the following two books in the trilogy.

I certainly found this book an enjoyable read -- more so as a teenager than I do now -- but Tepper's style has changed a little in this and the other two Mavin books, as compared with the True Game trilogy. The plot is more straight-forward, lacking the interconnectedness which gave The True Game good re-reading potential; having read the book once, there is less to gain from reading it again.

The usual.......2007-03-30

The Enterprise has been sent to Partria I on a diplomatic mission. The Patrians have reached the level of development required to be considered for membership into the Federation. The diplomat in charge of the mission is a former classmate of Kirk's, one who decided that the diplomatic service was more to his liking than Starfleet. Once the Federation team of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the two diplomats arrive at Patria I they discover that there is a strong rebel faction attempting to overthrow the local government, a faction that appears to be getting military aid from the Klingons. Further investigation into the matter uncovers even more secrets that the Patrians have been hiding.

This is not a particularly bad novel, nor is it an especially good one. It is formulistic, Kirk meets an old friend who is involved in the current mission, the mission becomes more complicated, one or more Enterpise crew members are in peril, the Enterprise comes under attack, there is a romance. Anyone who has seen more than a dozen of the episodes or read that many of the novels has seen it before. Even the surprise twists have been done before. On the plus side, the Hawke has gotten the characters right, for the most part. A dedicated fan will probably discover a few spots that disagree with the canon of the original series and earlier novels. Overall if this book happens to come your way it is an enjoyable way to spend a few hours but it is not one that needs to be sought out.

It was a close call as to whether to rate this book 3 stars or 4; it wasn't particularly exceptional, although it was competent and entertaining. Ultimately, the fact that it was entertaining was enough to push it to four stars, but only just; there was nothing particularly extraordinary here, but it was a perfectly adequate Star Trek story, well told and well-written.

A familiar Trek plot fairly well told........2004-01-04

The plot in its most basic description is an Original Series staple: the Enterprise is called in to negotiate with one of two warring factions, which the crew end up caught between, and with a Federation ambassador who is more of a hindrance than a help. In this case, the faction that has called in the Federation is the planetary government, and they seek help against rebels. The Enterprise crew quickly learns that the actions of the government are fairly questionable and the opposition of the rebels quite possibly justified. Overall, the book is a combination of investigation and action, mostly on the planet but with one space battle. The writing is good but never really impressive. The characters are well depicted, but not particularly distinctive and the interaction between them somewhat generic. Overall, the story is entertaining, but almost nothing in the book really stands out - apart from the depiction of the government's quite literal "thought police". That was well done, though disturbing.

Thought police and Kirk do not mix. Sets a lively tone for the story.

See if you can find the errors on pages 14, 100, 146, 157, 164, 225, and 267.

Great book. Especially the idea of a planet with mind cops........1998-11-20

The idea of a planet with artificially created mind police to perform law enforcement is quite orginal. Question: Doesn't the Patrian dude on the cover resemble Ted Kennedy, who played Ruk in "What are Little Girls Made Of" in TOS (he also played Lurch in The Addams Family sitcom)? I also liked that sport of fighting people with a staff by jumping from square to square. Involving Kirk in the game was an original way of talking to him while fighting with him.

My Go-To Cookbook.......2006-08-22

I can't applaud this cook book enough. In fact, I've never written a review in my life, but felt compelled after last night's simple corn & potato chowder. I use this book more than any other in my collection. Even my boyfriend, who rarely eats vegetarian, agrees that this is a great cook book. Somerville knows how to balance ingredients just right. And I especially love her blurbs about ingredients and how they can be used. She also recommends complementary recipes which helps when planning a meal. All cooks, even non-vegetarians, would benefit from this cookbook.

Always Great Results.......2005-11-08

Everything I've made from this book has been exceptional. I will agree that the recipes can be time consuming, but well worth the effort. Just made the Artichoke & Leek Lasagna yesterday - fabulous. Another favorite dish is the Winter Vegetable Curry with Pineapple Chutney!!! This is a great way to get more vegetables into your diet and really enjoy it. I highly recommend this book.

Stellar soups.......2005-05-05

I don't use much of this cookbook, although it might all be good. I'm recommending it on the basis of the soups, some of which are spectacular. Soups were not in my repertory prior to this book and "The Greens", as recipes frequently turned out flavorless. However,I've made a soup every week or two - using one of these two books - every since "discovery" of them 5 years ago. They might not be easy, but they're very flavorful, interesting and healthy and you can use good purchased organic stock in many cases to cut down the time (else you'll be at it all day, between stock and soup). Some of my favorites from this book are Palak Shorva (Curried Spinach Soup with Toasted Coconut), Winter Greens Soup (a kale/chard/spinach extravaganza), and Morrocan Lentil Soup.

I've also tried some of the curries, and they've been good (although again, fairly time consuming...processing all those vegetables takes a lot of time).

Great recipes in thi s book - I made the potato, leek and fennel gratin last night and was compelled to write a review today. The recipes are interesting, new combinations that I wouldn't have thought of (for example the ptotaos and fennel from last night's dinner). And oh so tasty. I highly recommend this book

A good general description book.......2005-10-12

As an owner of an Airedale teenager who has already searched the earth for information, I was not too chuffed by this book. What it does is offer a lot of general information which I happened to know already before purchasing this book. It certainly is a good reading material for those who do not know that much about the breed but that was not me. Yet since there is not much of book resources on Airedales, it is good to have this one than to have nothing.

This is the most complete Airedale book, without a lot of the extraneous general dog information found in other Airedale books. Has a good history and description of the breed as well as general care, ie for their difficult terrier coat. Good advise for first time owners and good reference for even experienced oweners.

Some good information about the Airedale.......2000-03-28

I have two Airedale Terriers,male and female. This book does give you the background of the Breed.I never knew the Airedale was a modern dog,being only a century or so old,and that the Otterhound was mated to either the now-extinct Tangrizzle Terrier,or the old Brokenhaired English Terrier to make the Airedale Terrier. I have bought other books on the dog that gives extra information,but this one is a must buy for anyone who owns a Airdale,or any dog.It gives all dog owners helpfull information about caring for your pet,and problems we all experience.

Good beginning, bad ending.......2000-01-01

This book's first chapter was good. It explained the complete history of Airedales. However, past page 32, they did not even mention "Airedale" (it was only written in the captions). There were Airedale pictures throughout, but they ended in the middle of the book. The rest seemed like an advertisement for Nylabone. In conclusion, if you are looking for a breed specific book about Airedales, I would not suggest buying this book.

The very best reference for the Airedale Terrier.......2000-01-30

An excellent and thorough accounting of the Airedale Terrier. But its scope goes beyond just the history of the breed but tackled in detail the desirable physical characteristics and the proper grooming. Outstanding visual aids leave nothing to the imagination on the proper length of coat when stripping. Again and again, I come back to this book when I am grooming. It compares the bone structure with other canines as to fully explain and offer understanding as to what is desirable physically and why. This is a must for every Airdale Terrier owner's collection.

VISIONS OF DARK BEAUTY.......2005-08-26

I remember the first time I a saw Dorian Cleavenger's art, and I even remember the first piece. It was at a big comic book show in the Detroit area and Dorian was one of the many artists there. Behind him on display was a painting of the character of Julie from Return of the Living Dead part III. The painting depicted Julie just after she has self-mutilated her body with needles, wire, chains, and shards of glass. It's the most shocking scene in the film and Dorian brilliantly captured this scene. Trinity is the third collection of Dorian's work from SQP and delivers 104 pages of Dorian's full-color paintings including many two-page spreads. This is an over-sized book printed on glossy stock, designed for the collector.

Cleavenger's women are beautiful, but dark and dangerous and often seem tinged with a deep sadness which mystifies the viewer. His creations can seem to have been born right out of the Garden of Eden, or right out of the very depths of hell. You'll find mostly the latter in this collection. The striking thing about Dorian's art is that this isn't the stuff of mere pin-ups. Each painting seems to have its own dark story it wants to tell. The book begins with a biography of Cleavenger and throughout the book he shares his thoughts on his creative process, the use of models, and other subjects. The great pieces are too many to list as Cleavenger is always consistently good, but let me note a few of my favorite paintings in this book.

"Vampire Slayer" finds an erotic and over-powering female vampire who has just dispatched the foolish vampire slayer who sought to drive a stake through her heart. "The Contract" is a masterpiece of dark fantasy as the angel of death cradles a fallen woman whose time, it seems, has run out. In "The Consummation" an Egyptian Princess has embraced her mummified lover right inside his sarcophagus.

A female Were-shark is the subject of "The Catch" as she hangs helpless on a lonely fisherman's wharf. The masochistic painting entitled "The Poet" depicts a tortured poet, her walls completely covered by her works that she's nailed there, while her body is covered with scars from a whip that have been self-inflicted. One can only wonder what kind of game was being played as a demure, white angel lies on the ground, and two arrow shafts piercing her body, in "The Game". "The Pledge" shows a female warrior, kneeling before an altar, chalice in hand. In a tribute to classic Universal monsters, Dorian presents "Chiller" with an exotic female mummy in the foreground, and behind the images of the Boris Karloff mummy and Frankenstein's monster, the Lon Chaney Jr. Wolfman, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The book also contains an index giving the title of each piece.

Dorian Cleavenger is a true master of dark fantasy and this book is further proof that he remains at the top of his game.

Soulful Singing Divas.......2007-04-12

I enjoyed reading some of my favorite soulful singers such as Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, etc. Although I was surprised that the Diva of all Divas, the late great Miss Dinah Washington wasn't included. I hope that Mr. Nathan will write a follow-up edition and include Miss Washington, along with Mariah Carey, Jennifer Holiday, the late Minnie Riperton, and the late Mary Wells.

Mildly Entertaining.......2003-11-19

It is obvious that David Nathan truly idolizes his subjects which probably accounts for the calculated design at the end of each chapter to make sure in no uncertain terms that he has shown that subject in her best light. I can certainly empathize because many of the divas profiled are true favorites of mine. That said, soul diva aficionados will readily recognize this as a collection of all-too-familiar press clippings even the most casual follower has at least heard of. To his credit, it is indeed refreshing to hear about lesser publicized divas like Esther Phillips, Millie Jackson, Nina Simone, Doris Troy or Phylllis Hyman. And ultimately, the final chapter sketching younger divas appeared entirely too hastily thrown together with the end result being little more than an unsatisfying epilogue.

Quite honestly, if you are in to black female vocalists, this, of course, was an easy, flattering read. However, the finished product is little more than an indulgent scrapbook by a journalist who, apparently, could have shed infinitely more light on the personalities he featured, but declined or refused out of either fierce loyalty or abject fear. Not only do the subjects deserve more than this, but so does the author.

The greatest book I read in months.......2003-07-08

Great book Mr. Nathan. I loved all the subjects picked in this book(I'm sorry that I don't know Doris Troy)and thought he did a fantastic job of painting a realistic portrait of the ladies using their own words and his personal experiences with them. I never knew Chaka Khan had such a turbulent past. Oh, and Esther Phillips- that temper! I laughed so hard. Diana Ross seems pretty nice (I love her) and I do love Dionne and Nina- they are such proud women. I hope the divas in the makings can successfully carry forth the diva achievements as their foremothers have done. If there is a sequel to this, Mr. Nathan, you must include Cissy Houston, Melba Moore and Donna Summer.

'Could be subtitled "The Lord of the sing(-ers)".......2003-01-02

David Nathan KNOWS his R & B. For close to four decades, the book's author has been a contributor, in some way or another, to the production of over 500 albums of soul music. He has done countless interviews, provided liner notes for recordings, served as producer on several, and even done a little background singing. It is obvious that if anyone knows what a "diva" truly is, David Nathan is that man.

"The Soulful Divas" covers the recording careers of the ladies profiled with little snippets of their non-professional beginnings, as well as individual highs and lows. However, it's these little "peeks" into the artists' characters that make the book such a fascinating read.

Not meaning to reveal much of the text, there are many little known facts reported in each profile. Each of the women has experienced her share of failed romantic relationships, legal battles with recording companies, perceived public opinions, peaks and valleys in album sales, and personal tragedies.

Most tragic of all showcased within the pages of the expose is the late Phyllis Hyman, a diva in every sense of the word. Like Nathan, I am a fan of hers, also, and her untimely demise still brings a lump in my throat.

But, the chapter on Millie Jackson is a welcome find. Jackson is the only diva profiled that is not represented in my musical library, save for a duet album with Isaac Hayes. However, after reading about the singer's body of work, as well as her down-to-earth and honest demeanor, I think that this is about to change.

I am curious about a certain "expletive deleted" symphony that she composed.

Note for the author: The next time around, include Patti Austin in volume two.

Interesting trip to the land of soul.......2002-07-11

Great concept, terrifc subjects. I particularly appreciated the inclusion of such greats as Esther Phillips (whom is so seldom mentioned these days), Nina Simone, and Chaka Khan, in which gave me some insight to her early years with Rufus. The section on Millie, a truly under-rated singer, and the late Phyllis Hyman were also informative and worth the read. I really appreciated Nathan's straight forward and honest, yet dignified, portrayal of the all the divas, until I got to the chapter's on Aretha, Diana, and Doris Troy whom Nathan, in my opinion, showed favoritism towards. While he did an excellent job of exposing the other divas, these three he seems to take pity- Aretha the most. Adoration is understandable, but you hinted in other chapters about Aretha's less than royal behaviors, while in her chapter she was almost hailed as a saint! Same goes for Miss Ross. Friend or not, Doris Troy could and should have been replaced with the likes of Candi Staton or Mavis Staples.

Overall, the book is a delightful read and I would look forward to a part two, highlighting the likes of soulful artists like, Stephanie Mills, Minnie Riperton, Melba Moore, Candi and Mavis to name a few....
