Book Description
In the tradition of Conrad, Kingsolver, and Ondaatje, Edie Meidav weaves from the tragedy of colonialism an epic first novel of stirring intensity. It's 1936, the world is sliding into war, and Henry Fyre Gould has left behind the salons of New York City for the British colony of Ceylon, the tear-shaped island off the coast of India. Driven by an arrogant faith in his ideals and convinced of his heroic destiny, he storms into the village of Rajottama, determined to build a model Buddhist society.
Grand and intimate, witty and poignant, THE FAR FIELD is the story of Henry's education and transformation. He lands in a village that buzzes with colorful eccentrics: a mysterious sugar-voiced boy, Johnny, who serves as his aide; the Buddhist monk with a taste for potted ham; Pushpa Pilima, the sharp-tongued aristocrat and rebel. There is also Nani, Henry's beautiful and enigmatic maid, a center of controversy in the village and the object of the dreamer's infatuation. Expecting to win the people's hearts with his various projects, Henry instead slowly begins to unravel. He discovers that his spiritual utopia is a tinderbox of conflict and suspicion, and his dangerous obsession and meddling plans finally strain tensions to the point of disaster, sending Henry on a hallucinatory journey toward salvation.
Fusing brave eloquence and sly humor, Meidav grapples with the consequences of the West's fascination with the East and explores the nature of faith and love. THE FAR FIELD, a singular work of sweeping imaginative power, introduces an original and important new voice in fiction.

All too relevant today.......2006-02-07
A strong book which makes a beautiful parabola around the issue of America's meddling foreign policy. Read it if you want leisure, pleasure, and thought provocation about Buddhism, Sri Lanka, and well-meaning idealists. I loved the reach of the language.
Translucent prose: It's not here.......2005-03-28
I bought this book with much anticipation for a read that would transport to another place, but spent the next four years trying to get through its first fifty pages. Ultimately I just skipped the first section and moved on to the point where the protagonist is finally in Sri Lanka. Although there are moments and phrases and metaphors that are wonderfully imaginative and well seen, I read with mounting frustration with the author's overworked style. It's as if she was striving for greatness with every sentence, instead of simply letting the story spill out. In contrast, I would hold up the gorgeous understated prose of Jhumpa Lahiri, of whom one critic said:" You don't even know you're reading." And yet Lahiri's images are arresting, the scenes moving, the characters affecting. But perhaps the self-conscious style of Edie Meidav can simply be explained by a first-time novelist's desperate attempt to get noticed. I'm hoping that her second novel will show more ease, more "translucency." Honestly, I wouldn't have taken the trouble to write this review, if I wasn't so damned annoyed with a writing style that inserts itself between me and its subject like some child blowing bubble gum in my face.
A Book for Any Season.......2001-06-23
Finally - a solidly good read! What a relief. I had thought I would have to forever decamp to nonfiction. But here is a fascinating tale, deftly woven. Thank you!
Original Epic!.......2001-06-21
Ms. Meidav's debut novel is a great book by a young promising author. As she takes you on this journey, and though she hints all along at the main character's trajectory, you are drawn into not only his world but into the inner lives of the villagers she depicts so successfully. Rather than romanticise the virtues of the east, Meidav trains her eye at a wide range of three-dimensional characters so that we come to see both aspirations and hypocrisies within American, English, and, yes, Sri Lankan culture. In this way, she truly gives another culture its due. Perhaps we find ourselves in many of the characters, all of whom I found engaging and rich in their human passions, all of whom I found true (if this is a useful word to apply in fiction) to a certain kind of subcontinental life, one that I was born into but which I have never seen so fully explored. Meidav's novel is a novel in the biggest sense of the word. It offers old-fashioned pleasures, a real world to enter, but with a contemporary pacing. It also lets the reader explore new ideas (about desire, grasping, human connection, cultures meeting and clashing) and does this all in a new style, something I have never quite seen before. Reading it, I thought about the truism that all original work will in its own time get scorned by those who are most interested in upholding convention. The book will appeal to those who have some interest in the East or Eastern culture, but also to those with an interest in what it means to be born within a certain culture and to travel away from it/toward it. It's not a history of Ceylon nor a scholarly study of Buddhism, but rather what struck me as an exploration of how hard it is for humans to connect and see one another across many divides, whether that of culture or of character. This is art, as the word artifice suggests. Picasso says art is the lie that makes us see the truth; this is how Ms. Meidav uses her art, to develop her characters, and yes, indeed we come to know the main character in his full depth as well as his auxiliaries. We know the protagonist's desires and dreams, as well as his inner conflicts. We may not like the protagonist, but like any great and memorable fictional character, he has a life beyond mere psychobabble. His true motives, like most of ours, contain their conflicts. I am looking forward to other work by this same author. I am a great fan of diving into a world as complete as the one which this novel offers us. Reading this book for me was a life-changing experience, a journey that makes me want to travel it one more time.
good effort.......2001-05-10
However, it is not what it's cut out to be. The use of Buddhist scripturtes to signal the start of different parts of the novel and so-called thematic unity was quite irrelevant to this novel. Comparisons with Melville or Gaddis are quite misleading as they are authors of exceptional power, complexity and difficulty. In the case of Ms Meidev you see the triumph of creative writing programmes (which one suspects she graduated from) which allow you to imitate the superficial characteristics of great writers who have no need for such programmes because they are gifted in the first place. This is not to say Ms Meidev has no talent, she does, but it is not the same; it is like saying Stephen King is as good as H.P. Lovecraft. Which is why though having been published myself and having taught creative writing, I don't think I ever want teach it again. This is a work that is a product of pure market forces: someone needs a Ondaatje read-a-like but with a different twist and so the publisher's list if fulfilled when they find one. The book is a good first effort, but there it remains. There is no serious character development, hardly any ambiguity that isn't forced and very little understanding of the people in Ceylon/Sri Lanka and what Buddhism means in their lives. This is more a work of an expatriate who lives in the East for awhile and returns to the West to write about their sojourn hoping to dispel the Occident's "easy" catgorisation of the Orient, but thereby ironically reinforcing that lack of understanding and empathy. Read Melville, Conrad, Green, Gaddis or Toni Morrison for a more authentic go at this.

Enchanting.......2002-01-23
When I first picked this book up I was a little apprehensive, but after the first page I was engrossed. Andre Norton and Susan Shwartz do a fabulous job at showing both the light and dark sides of Silver Snow's journey from beloved daughter to forgotten concubine and finally queen of the barbarians. They paint a realistic picture of the subservient nature of women in Han China without over-emphasizing the fact. This book was a perfect blend of fantasy and history.
Beautiful Chinese Fantasy.......2000-07-28
When I first checked this out from the public library, I was desperate for a good read. Andre Norton has always been one of my favorite sci fi/fantasy writers, so I checked to see which of her books were in. I saw "Imperial Lady" and thought it would be worth a try. I'm only 15 and very picky about what I read, so I was surprised to be totally engrossed in the life of Silver Snow. I was definately captured by the elaborate life styles and customs that differ greatly from my life half-way round the world in Gretna, Nebraska. I also enjoyed "Willow", whose changling ways offset Silver Snow so greatly it was almost humorous. "Imperial Lady" was of great historical value and was also a great read. I encourage anyone to check it out from a local library or buy it here on Amazon.com soon.

The Future of War.......2004-09-09
I read this book, along with its two sequels, over 20 years ago and was greatly impressed by its scholarship. The stories selected all had a pertinent point to make about the future of war for man. This first volume dealt with future war on earth. It included stories such as "The Man in the Gray Weapons Suit (future air combat)," "A Scenario for the Fall of Night (A successful Soviet invasion of the US in the 1990s)" and "The Screwfly Solution (Alien invaders use a unique biological warfare solution to rid Earth of those pesky humans). Well developed and insightful in its day, and still a good read for those who like military science fiction.

Donna Hay, Australia's bestselling cookbook author, understands our pain. The pain, that is, of producing delicious meals when time is tight and we really can't shop--again. Off the Shelf: Cooking from the Pantry presents a blueprint for from-scratch good eating that relies on a thoughtfully stocked larder, a few fresh ingredients, and truly streamlined recipes. The idea isn't new, of course, but Hay finds a better way with it, presenting recipes like Pasta with Pancetta and Peas; Lime, Beef, and Noodle Salad; and Green Olive and Baked Chicken that are truly quick and easy to do. First published in Australia, Off the Shelf arrives here in an edition meant to work for American cooks; if ingredient names, quantities, and some operations aren't always completely "translated" (one recipe calls for English spinach leaves) or given conventional American form, willing readers will still be able use it most productively.
Organized by ingredients and topics, the book offers buying advice throughout, regular recipes, and Short Order sections that distill formulas, such as those for Lemon and Basil Pilaf and Marinated Chickpea Salad, into get-the-drill-quickly paragraphs. Among the fuller-dress recipes, readers will surely want to try Beef and Caramelized Onion Couscous Salad, Crispy Spiced Thai Chicken, and Seared Salmon on Coconut Spinach, among others. Sweets, including Burnt Vanilla Creams and Chocolate Honey Snaps, are also delicious and easily accomplished. With truly useful tips (cut overlong cooked noodles to make them more manageable is one why-didn't-I-think-of-that example), an oversize bravura design, and color photos throughout, the book shows and tells how to cook with the greatest ease. --Arthur Boehm

A friend brought this cookbook to a women's weekend and I fell in love with the beautiful pictures, variety, and ease of recipies!
Amazing book design, even more amazing food........2007-03-02
I am a huge fan of Donna Hay. I have a collection of recipes from her magazines and they all taste fantastic. The skill level for some of her magazine recipes can be a bit high though. Tastey and amazing none the less.
I recieved this book from a friend who went to Australia and brought it back for me. I was so excited. I dismissed the title 'off the shelf', as I find this isn't always true with cook books. It is very true here. Now that have cooked with nothing but these recipes for two weeks, I know to always have some fresh lemon, parmesean and herbs in my kitchen and I am good to go. There is a good range of veggie, fish and meat dishes. All that i have easily been able to substitue ingredients for (ex. fish instead of chicken). The food has all been amazing and if I take 5 minutes to prep all my ingredients, the dinners that I have made have taken about 15-20 minutes. Highly recommend this for ANYONE who loves to cook and loves to eat good food. These are easy recipes and there is a good mix of meals from everyday to a sunday dinner.
Ok.......2006-12-06
I was really excited when I brought this book home from the library. I thought it would contain dishes that will become regular at my home. I love cooking from ingredients that are found in the pantry...but unfortunately there weren't that many recipes that caught my fancy here. I just liked the lamb shanks with lentils, the cannelini in tomato broth and the prawn in tomatoes recipes...the others were very uninspriring. I've already made the tomato broth and liked it too...the tomato flavor shines through very well.
UPDATE: Made lamb shanks......was HORRIBLE....ZERO stars...yuck! *GAG*

Great Book.......2007-10-06
This book really helped me decide if I wanted to get a Yorkie. I felt it didn't sugar coat them and made them feel real.
biting?.......2007-09-16
I cannot believe there is no chapter on biting as a puppy. It is a thoroughly obnoxious habit--thought this book would have had some words of wisdom.
Yorkies.......2007-09-13
It's a very good book and it made me realize that I don't want a Yorkshire Terrier. Too small!
Dummy No More!.......2007-07-24
This book was a God send. I'd highly suggest buying it and reading it from cover to cover before bringing your little Yorkie home. The book is an easy read and because of the format, you can skip to what's important to you and read the rest at a later time. We bought our little puppy from the breeder when he was a mere 6 weeks unlike the standard 12 weeks, which I was actually a little nervous about. However, the book was right on the money with instructions on what to expect when picking him up from the breeder to his very first night in his new home. We just recently took the little guy to his first appointment with the vet. That too is covered in the book! The vet was impressed with how much I knew about the breed and puppies in general. I have this book to thank for that. I really would have been lost without it.

A Wasted Opportunity.......2007-07-16
I had looked forward to the publication of Art Deco in Australia: Sunrise over the Pacific with considerable relish for some time. Unfortunately on purchasing the book it was something of an anti-climax and I was disappointed by its overall lack of quality and its superficiality... let me explain.
Normally I can't be bothered to review a book, DVD or CD I don't like, but as an Australian with a passion for Art Deco I had to make an exception for this shockingly bad book. If you want a lesson in how not to publish an art book Sunrise over the Pacific is it. It has the look and feel of a book that was quickly cobbled together from old articles culled from magazines such as House and Garden or Women's Weekly. Even the layout is more like a glossy "lifestyle" magazine than a serious art book.
Sunrise over the Pacific is an intellectually light weight and unrewarding read; there is little or no discussion of the wider cultural context of Art Deco in Australia or of the many competing artistic trends of the inter-war period. Even the great depression is for the most part glossed over, giving one the impression that life was grand for everybody who lived in Australia during the 1920s & 1930s, and that their lifestyle was carefree and happy with no worries what so ever. The inter-war era sadly cannot be considered an elegant Art Deco playground, at least not for the average person who struggled to make ends meet.
If you want to see how a book like this should have been written I suggest you read Alastair Duncan's seminal classic: American Art Deco. Its such a shame that Craftsman House and its editors didn't spend more time on crafting a better book. So if you decide to buy Art Deco In Australia: Sunrise Over The Pacific, all I can say is that its nice for the lovely pictures but not much else. I suppose its better than having NO book at all on Australian Art Deco at all.

Book Description
Harriet Tubman was a former slave who led a heroic struggle for her people in the civil war. An American Joan of Arc, she was more successful than any other person of her time in liberating African-Americans from slavery. Harriet Tubman, the Moses of Her People was originally published in 1886. It is a classic biography of one of America's most important women. The book was based on a collection of essays, Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman, compiled by Sarah Bradford, which was published in 1869. Both books were privately funded by Sarah Bradford. Profits went to Harriet Tubman who, in turn, housed and cared for indigents until her death in 1913.
Download Description
Harriet Tubman was a runaway slave from Maryland who became known as the "Moses of her people." Over the course of 10 years, and at great personal risk, she led hundreds of slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad, a secret network of safe houses where runaway slaves could stay on their journey north to freedom. She later became a leader in the abolitionist movement, and during the Civil War she was a spy for the federal forces in South Carolina as well as a nurse. Please Note: This book has been reformatted to be easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year. Both versions are text searchable.

An American Hero- Exaggerated.......2007-01-26
In 1868 after the war Harriet Tubman was induced to dictate her autobiography. In the various editions the story changed, becoming more militant over the years. She also needed the funds from the sale of the book.
Tubman was and is a great American hero. That can not be denied. But with the exception of a few newspaper articles, a few letters and this book, much of what we know about her has been passed from one author to another, each changing or embellishing the story as she or he saw fit.
Unfortunately there are some exaggerations, and or glaring mistakes in this book. Being that she was illiterate it could be that the story was just told wrong. I would hope so.
The Combahee River Raid during the American Civil War is a good example of the problems with her story.
While the raid did take place historians to this day have no documented proof of exactly what her role was and how extensive her involvement in the planning. Unfortunately the reports by the Union commanders are missing. In addition certain parts of the narrative, which are presented as fact, simply didn't happen. The raid never came within five miles by water of the railroad. Only private buildings, farms, plantations, mills were burnt or destroyed. No governmental supply depots were even in the area. Unfortunately this brings into question of what really did happen.
What we do know is she was on the raid, she had a major role in the raid. Most importantly over 750 slaves were freed. Many of these freed slaves eventually did serve in the Union cause.
A good story, but don't take all of the facts for fact before you really do your homework.
The moses of her people.......2005-03-07
The book made me realize that enyone can do anything they wish. I wish it would have gone a little deeper into the life of harriet tubman, however I thought it was still a good book.
God Bless Mrs. Tubman.......2003-02-17
A very informative book. Prior to reading this book, I had assumed Mrs. Tubman took her people to the North, the land of "Freedom". I was wrong, Mrs. Tubman had to take her people all the way to Canada, to be free. In the North, with the passage of the fugitive slave act, Harriett Tubman knew her people would/and could be 'captured' by Northern slave catches, ( who frequently captured free African-Americans as well) and sold them back into slavery) Traveling at night, hiding in the swamps, carring laudnum to keep the crying babies from crying and giving them away, and a pistol for safety, and risking her very life should she be captured.
I regret there was never more recorded history on Harriett Tubman. Her bravery, and heroism are awe inspiring. She risked her life 19 times, to save her people, and bring them to Canada, for Canada was the end of the Undergound Railroad.
Mrs. Tubman serves as a true American Hero, that went far beyond and above, what the vast majority of us would do.
I take my hat off to you, Mrs Tubman. God Bless you.
A Black Woman who left her mark on history........2002-08-04
Harriet Tubman was born to a free man and a slave woman. Her life was hard and she abhorred slavery for her people. She sustained a head injury while helping an escaping slave. Her free Black husband was not supportive of her activities. Learning she was to be sold, Harriet planned an escape, however her brothers made her return. She finally did escape, using the underground railroad. Harriet was a family woman, and could not rest until she helped her sister and brother escape. The Blacks truly considered her their female version of the Biblical Moses.
Great..........2001-02-21
I thought that this book was great. I enjoyed that it was written by someone in Harriet's time, except that some of the terminolgy is confusing. If you read this book, you will learn a lot about Harriet, and her adventures, but remember the dictionary!

Book Description
The way was so toilsome over the rugged mountain passes, that often the men who followed her would give out, and foot-sore, and bleeding, they would drop on the ground, groaning that they could not take another step. They would lie there and die, or if strength came back, they would return on their steps, and seek their old homes again. Then the revolver carried by this bold and daring pioneer, would come out, while pointing it at their heads she would say, "Dead niggers tell no tales; you go on or die!" And by this heroic treatment she compelled them to drag their weary limbs along on their northward journey.

This books illustrations tell a story within the story and is worth every penny spent.
wonderful!.......2007-08-25
Fantastic, amazing, stirring, engaging, empowering. I could go on... This book is a treasure & I am so glad to have it in our personal library. We bought this for my daughter and I thought it was so good I had to read it aloud to my husband that same night. Kadir Nelson is always spectacular in his illustrations, and he once again rises to the top in this book. The story is very moving, and with a few words it accomplishes the task of taking you inside the emotions and the questions, fears, and faith within Harriet Tubman's heart. I am extremely satisfied with this book & happy to give it to my daughter. I hope she shares it with her children some day.
Great Book .......2007-06-08
I am an elementary school teacher, mom of three and children's book lover. This book is visually enticing and a wonderful read. All of my children as well as my students loved it!
super good book .......2007-06-08
The cover says it all...and thanks to a great seller for fast shipping and smooth transaction!
Beautiful!.......2007-05-08
What I most appreciate about this book is the way it incorporates the role faith played in Harriet's life into the story of her leading daring escapes from slavery to freedom. Most of the history we learn in school attempts to secularize the truth about the people and events that we hold so dear, but this book does a phenomenal job in telling a more accurate, unbiased story of a remarkable woman. Illustrated by Kadir Nelson (who is GIFTED!!!!!), this is a welcome addition to any children's (or adult's, for that matter) library. I know am already collecting a slew of books
