Book Description

In researching the life of his boxer father Sonny, historian Moses Lapinsky uncovers a pivotal event. On a hot Toronto night in 1933, at an amateur baseball game at Christie Pits field, four Nazi youths flashed a large black swastika, shouting "Heil Hitler!" Within seconds, a group of Jewish youths charged at them, trying to grab the flag. One of the Nazi youths snatches back the banner and breaks free, running with the flag through the park, setting off a four-hour race riot involving 15,000 people, injuring hundreds, and sending scores to the hospital. In this panoramic novel, Karen X. Tulchinsky traces the fortunes of the Lapinskys from the evening of the riots through World War II and into the 1950s. It is then, in a boxing ring at Madison Square Garden, that Sonny Lapinsky must decide whether or not to reconcile with a family torn apart by a violent past — a decision that will affect generations to come, including his son and future biographer, Moses. Set against the Great Depression, race riots, and World War II, this family saga about a Jewish boy-cum-champion boxer is filled with humor, sorrow, bravery, folly, and the stuff of everyday life.

4 out of 5 stars A simple delight.......2006-10-07

It was purely happenchance that I came across this novel. I was in a musty, basement second-hand bookshop, looking for something else entirely, when I found it. Well, 'we found each other' is probably more appropriate, given the end result: an almost perfectly satisfying reading experience. (Full disclosure: I was sold by the cover...and the jacket blurbs. What can I tell you; I'm a sucker for great artwork and tasty marketing. To be truthful, the packaging, the cue words, the intimation of what the novel promised was what had me reaching for my wallet.)

My personal reading preference is for literatary novels, featuring prose that has me, as a writer, wishing I'd written it. I crave if not the transcendent, then the staggering. As novelist, I have a love of powerful prose. As a screenwriter, I have an appreciation of the visual. But either way, I love a great story. A tale well-told. 'The Five Books of Moses Lapinsky' is strong on the storytelling...if not exactly scoring top marks on the literary impact.

The story spans (if only tangentally) a century and three continents. And yet it's fiercely focused on a Toronto family. It has Sonny Lapinsky at its core, but everyone plays a part, everyone has something to contribute. What I appreciated most about Ms Tulchinsky's efforts was that she chose to mix things up chronologically, and how well she managed the mix; the layout was refreshing. And I never felt anything but confidence coming off the page. I don't think 'masterful' is too great an adjective to use in this regard.

As for the actual writing, her literary 'chops'... Well, I chose the title of my review carefully. Her style is simple. As in 'spare and effective'. There is nothing strained about it, nothing flowery. It reminded me of Richard Russo's...although hers is even more factual. That she writes in the present-tense undoubtedly magnifies the effect. No, it's not Ann-Marie MacDonald's 'Fall on Your Knees'. (And granted, I'm not sure Ms Tulchinsky has it in her to write that way, or whether she'd even want to.) But the novel did captivate me completely from start to finish.

And in conclusion, I'll pay Ms Tulchinsky as heartfelt a compliment as I can: it would make an incredible film/mini-series. Oh; did I mention I was a screenwriter...?

5 out of 5 stars Tulchinsky's Latest is a Total-Knock-Out.......2005-01-18

The Five Books of Moses Lapinsky by Karen X. Tulchinsky is a phenomenal deviation from her previous style. Although I have come to love her wit, humorous characterizations and dialogues in previous books, I appreciate the maturity of her latest achievement. Her novel is based on the Christie Pits riots and depicts the four brothers of the Lapinsky family struggling through the depression into the fifties. In so doing, she connects a multitude of characters on whom the brothers rely and paints an exceptional portrayal of resistance.
Tulchinsky's keen eye for injustice, which her reader's have become accustomed to, is different and arguable much more advanced than in her previous fiction. Centering her characters around the horribly ambivalent situation of Canadian Jewish immigrants during the Second World War, she captures a slice of Canadian identity often left untold. In addition, she convincingly exposes hypocrisies surrounding her closeted gay character through his relationship to the military and his family and surroundings. As tragic as many of the chapters of The Five Books are, Tulchinsky still delivers humour and moments of lightness laced with profound triumph.
It is no small feat to build such a massive conglomerate of intertwined tales around a central metaphor. In The Five Books, that metaphor is boxing or, if one wants to make a broader leap, fighting. The book demonstrates what I believe Tulchinsky is trying to share - that fighting must be methodical, structured, practiced and, most importantly, that the struggle to win a fight begins and ends in the heart.

Editor Brian Thomsen admits that film was his entrée into the world of science fiction. After watching classics such as Fantastic Voyage and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, he discovered that many of the most dramatic presentations were based on written stories. So he sought out the authors, read their works, and became enthralled by the golden word as well as the silver screen. Years later he decided to compile an anthology of stories that were translated to film, and the result is The Reel Stuff. The book contains 12 works by writers such as Philip K. Dick and John Varley; some writers are well known and others are not as readily recognizable. Included in the anthology are Dick's "Second Variety" and "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," which turned up on screen as Screamers and Total Recall, respectively. Also included, but less well known, is Robert Silverberg's "Amanda and the Alien," which was turned into a made-for-cable movie of the same name. There's even an H.P. Lovecraft story here, "Herbert West: Reanimator," which Hollywood made into Re-Animator, a campy SF horror classic. --Craig E. Engler

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Read........2001-07-13

First of all, this was a great idea for an anthology. Lots of short speculative fiction are made into every year (take A.I. for example) and those of us who always like the book better have a hard time finding those stories because of various reasons. So I loved this concept, and the stories chosen were for the most part strong pieces.

I discovered two of my favorite stories in this anthology. George R. R. Martin's "Sandkings" is my favorite short story of all time. It won the Nebula and is one of the most tightly written stories out there. The main character, Simon Kress, is a real jerk who treats everything with utter cruelty. He's looking for a new pet, and finds an insect-like lifeform called a Sandking. Sandkings literally worship their owners, but what happens when their owner is a cruel and sadistic god? That's what "Sandkings" explores.

The other story that really stood out for me is "Second Variety" by Philip K. Dick. It's an exciting story about a war in which humans invented robots that would end the war forever. But what happens when the robots improve and reproduce themselves? It's a probing question about where technology is taking us and human nature.

There are other strong stories in here: "Enemy Mine" by Barry Longyear was truly poignant; "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale," by Philip K. Dick was the basis for _Total Recall_; and I would have LOVED "Herbert West--Reanimator" by Lovecraft if it wasn't for the constant recapping of the previous sections of the stories (that was probably due to the piece being published in serial fashion, but it's annoying when read straight through).

Then there were the duds. "Amanda and The Alien," though cute, really does nothing for me. Doesn't have a strong, poignant theme. "The Forbidden," basis for _Candyman_ had a great ending, but took so long getting there it didn't really matter. And I was very dissapointed with "Nightflyer"--doubly disappointed sicne George R. R. Martin is my favorite writer.

All in all, there wer more good stories than bad, which I guess is all you can ask for when reading a collection like this that encompasses a large variety of works. And if you're trying to learn to write speculative fiction, this is a good place to study different story constructions and techniques. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Overall, real Good.......1999-12-17

OK, first I shall say it was a strange pick of stories. where was 'Sentinals' Arthur C Clarke's story that inspired 2001: A Space Odyssy? And why are there no less then five Horror stories in this collection( Mimic, Second Variety, Sandkings, Candyman and Reanimator?)

But it was, nonetheless, a great collection.

      Mimic was short, but interesting.

Second Variety was cool, even if it wasn't really surprising and had a cheat ending.

Amanda and the Alien was better then the movie, but that doesn't say much.

Sandkings is a stroy by one of my favorite writers George R R Martin, and was the scariest thing I've ever read.

We Can remember it for you wholesale was very cool, and very different from Total Recall, too.

Enemy Mine was prety cute, if obvious.

Air Raid was intriguing but not all that unique, reminded me a little of stephen King's The Drawing of the three.

Johnny Menemonic, by william gobson, was terrible, boring and totally uncomprihensible.

The forbidden was Ok, not great.

Martin's second entry, Nightflyers, was extreamly cool, almost as good as his first, defnetly a classic, even if it was a little similar to 2001.

So go buy it, 'Sandkings', 'We can Remember it for you' and 'Nightflyers' each is worth the price of the book alone.

4 out of 5 stars Would have given 4.5.......1999-03-18

Great collection of short stories which were the inspiration for sci-fi and horror movies. Included is the source material for Mimic, Total Recall, Screamers, Enemy Mine, Reanimator, Johnny Mnemonic, and others. The quality of the stories varies. Most are well-written, but there are 2 stinkers in my opinion: "Candyman" and "Amanda and the Alien". I'd like to see a follow-up published.

5 out of 5 stars Best book investment in a long time.......1999-03-16

DAW was on the money when they put this together. It's a great idea for a short-story collection - high praise considering that anthologies seem to be the virus du jour of the sci-fi/fantasy market... enough already! This book stands out not only for the premise, but for the selection of stories included, and it's likely the reader will have seen at least 2 of the movies based on these stories. Then, to actually READ the source material... well, it shows you just how much Hollywood will take advantage of an author once they get the name on the contract. Speaking of, there's two, yes, TWO entries by Philip K. Dick, and these were probably the most altered on their way to the big screen. Anyway, this book is a lot of fun. The only problem I had was the inclusion of "Amanda and the Alien" by Robert Silverberg - an amazingly sub-par, even amateurish, story, confirming exactly why I don't read his stuff. It shouldn't be here, but with the other gems, I can overlook it.

3 out of 5 stars Some excellent stories, but....a mixed bag.......1998-08-21

"The Reel Stuff" is a collection of science fiction and horror tales that were the basis of films in both the 80s and 90s. Despite the cover copy's assertion that these are stories by the "masters of science fiction" at least two of the stories (those by H.P. Lovecraft and Clive Barker) are clearly horror tales, and Donald A. Wollheim's "Mimic" at least skirts that genre. Also, there are a couple of stories included that are relatively minor entries in an authors ouvre, such as Robert Silverberg's "Amanda and the Alien," included because it was made into a cheesy cable film several years ago. Still this is a good collection of tales, particularly if you've been disappointed with the film versions of such classic stories as Barry Longyear's "Enemy Mine" and Philip K. Dick's "Second Variety" (filmed as "Screamers"). Worth a look, but a mixed bag.

Recipes are easy to prepare, especially with an approach geared to beginners which takes a step-by-step approach and includes tips for complete menu plans.

5 out of 5 stars For adventurous cooks who'd like to be healthy too.......2005-04-26

Classic or contemporary Mediterranean food, with its preponderance of fresh vegetables and fruit and its reliance on olive oil instead of butter, forms a naturally healthy cuisine, Seaver points out, obviating the need for diet books. With main courses like Lemon and Artichoke Risotto, Broiled Duck Breasts with Grilled Peaches, and Trout with Sorrel, who needs steak and potatoes?

The book is divided into First and Second Courses, followed by Dessert and each course is organized by main ingredient - meat, fish, vegetable. Most first courses (Carpaccio of Beets, Terrine of Monkfish with Green Sauce) can be at least partially prepared in advance and many are served cold or room temperature. Main courses (Bouillabaisse, Moussaka of Artichoke and Veal, Pork Tonnato) range from quick and easy to elegant and time consuming.

Recipes are clear and attractively presented. Presentation is important to Seaver and is included as an integral part of the recipe. Except for a recipe for Coq au Vin which uses boned chicken breasts, every dish in this book has a mouthwatering freshness and sophistication which will inspire cooks who want to celebrate mealtime and stay healthy too.

I bought this book weeks in advance of getting my new puppy so I would be prepared to train her correctly. This was the best one out of all the training books I bought.

It helps you understand the way a dog thinks. Coming from that approach, it is much easier to get your dog to understand what you want from him/her. This book taught me many things I did not know and it showed me the things I had done incorrectly with past dogs.

I used to think crating dogs was cruel. But it has shown me that just like a baby who is kept in a playpen to be safe from harmful things in the room, a crate is a puppy's safe area -- a den -- enjoyed by them. And crate training I now know is the biggest aid in housebreaking a dog. I'm so glad I got educated on this!

I read it through twice, then bought a copy for my mom who is also getting a pup from the same litter I am. With the help of this book, we are both going to have well trained dogs!

              5 out of 5 stars saved me.......2007-01-28

This book was the first one that I found that actually taught me how to train my dog. This is a great book for a new dog owner!

This is the most complete book I have ever found to identify Flordia seashells. As an avid collector I have used the book to both identify shells and found it helpful for classroom presentations with my shells.

              5 out of 5 stars great beginner's shell guide!.......2005-07-24

if you're just getting into sea shell collecting and are looking for a guide that's mainly for identifaction of some of the shells found here in the US-then I recommend this book.

It's smaller size is perfect as a take along guide. The author has clear photos of many common shells, as well as where in the US you would find them, as well as an approximate monatery value (which may be a bit higher as this book is a decade + old, but seems pretty accurate).

My eight year old son, who is a budding conchologist, loves to look through this book-and can now identify several shells from it. I refer to it quite a bit as well.

I wouldn't recommend to a more advanced collector as it is too basic for that. Also, as to the "shelling" aspect-the book gives you no more hints or tips to shell collecting than any other shell book.

Overall-a great basic guide-and you can get it dirt cheap here on Amazon (used)!

              4.5 stars!

1 out of 5 stars Complete Guide? uh huh uh huh.......2002-06-12

This book is deceptive for the homeowner who does not have much experience hanging paper. It is written as if the author may have never hung paper! Some of the descriptions of procedures are absolutely wrong! Some other descriptions are worthlessly inadaquate. I am sorry I wasted my money on this book. A Complete Guide it is NOT!!
Example #1.) It pretends to explain how to cut paper for switchplates. The cut that it illustrates is absolutely WRONG!! Anyone who has done this knows the cuts should be at 45°. The 90° cuts they illustrate would leave wrinkled clumps at the edges.
Example #2.) The complete guide to removing grasscloth paper consists of one paragraph telling us to saturate it and scrape it.
This is totally inadaquate for anyone who has never removed this stuff. The tools should be described, the amount of time, drop cloths, etc..should all be included in this procedure. Anyone starting this procedure by simply doing as they say would be in for a real stressful event.
I say buy a different book!

Before I bought this book, I had never done wallpaper at all. The book contains excellent and easy-to-understand instructions and illustrations for all phases of the wallpapering process. My first wallpapering project turned out very well, even though I was a complete novice. I highly recommend this book.

                  J. Deotis Roberts's "Bonhoeffer and King" is both an instructive work in theological ethics and an important study of two of the most significant prophetic voices of the twentieth century. Roberts considers and compares the theological reflections that guided Bonhoeffer's courageous stand against Nazism and King's quest for civil rights in America.

I used this book in a first-year seminar entitled 'speaking truth to power' this fall. It is an excellent introduction to the lives and philosohy of Bonhoeffer and King. Roberts has done an excellent job of giving the development of the ideas these social prophets held in a way that allows students to see how such ideas are shaped. Although it is helpful to have a good working understanding of theology and politics, this book is still very useful.

                      Book Description

For at least two decades the career of Edward Said has defined what it means to be a public intellectual today. Although attacked as a terrorist and derided as a fraud for his work on behalf of his fellow Palestinians, Said’s importance extends far beyond his political activism. In this volume a distinguished group of scholars assesses nearly every aspect of Said’s work—his contributions to postcolonial theory, his work on racism and ethnicity, his aesthetics and his resistance to the aestheticization of politics, his concepts of figuration, his assessment of the role of the exile in a metropolitan culture, and his work on music and the visual arts.
In two separate interviews, Said himself comments on a variety of topics, among them the response of the American Jewish community to his political efforts in the Middle East. Yet even as the Palestinian struggle finds a central place in his work, it is essential—as the contributors demonstrate—to see that this struggle rests on and gives power to his general "critique of colonizers" and is not simply the outgrowth of a local nationalism. Perhaps more than any other person in the United States, Said has changed how the U.S. media and American intellectuals must think about and represent Palestinians, Islam, and the Middle East. Most importantly, this change arises not as a result of political action but out of a potent humanism—a breadth of knowledge and insight that has nourished many fields of inquiry. Originally a special issue of boundary 2, the book includes new articles on minority culture and on orientalism in music, as well as an interview with Said by Jacqueline Rose.
Supporting the claim that the last third of the twentieth century can be called the "Age of Said," this collection will enlighten and engage students in virtually any field of humanistic study.

In 1991, Anita Hill, a law professor, dropped a bombshell into the middle of Senate Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas: Thomas had, Hill alleged, harassed and embarrassed her with repeated requests for dates and discussions about pornography while supervising her at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Hill's allegations introduced a volatile mix of sex, race, and scandal into the proceedings, deeply dividing both the Senate and the entire country. The aftermath of the Thomas hearings saw plenty of books about Anita Hill--some supporting her, others attacking--but Hill remained silent... until now. In Speaking Truth to Power, Anita Hill finally sets the record straight.

Though much of the book details her side of the story and her professional relationship with Clarence Thomas, Speaking Truth to Power also provides interesting glimpses into Anita Hill, the person. From her early life as the youngest of 13 children on a farm in Oklahoma to her current position as a law professor, Hill offers details about her personal life and her motivations. Hill writes with forthright conviction; in this case of he said/she said, Speaking Truth to Power tilts the scales a little more heavily in Anita Hill's favor.

                      Book Description

After her astonishing testimony in the Clarence Thomas hearings, Anita Hill ceased to be a private citizen and became a public figure at the white-hot center of an intense national debate on how men and women relate to each other in the workplace. That debate led to ground-breaking court decisions and major shifts in corporate policies that have had a profound effect on our lives--and on Anita Hill's life. Now, with remarkable insight and total candor, Anita Hill reflects on events before, during, and after the hearings, offering for the first time a complete account that sheds startling new light on this watershed event.

Only after reading her moving recollection of her childhood on her family's Oklahoma farm can we fully appreciate the values that enabled her to withstand the harsh scrutiny she endured during the hearings and for years afterward. Only after reading her detailed narrative of the Senate Judiciary proceedings do we reach a new understanding of how Washington--and the media--rush to judgment. And only after discovering the personal toll of this wrenching ordeal, and how Hill copes, do we gain new respect for this extraordinary woman.

Here is a vitally important work that allows us to understand why Anita Hill did what she did, and thereby brings resolution to one of the most controversial episodes in our nation's history.

4 out of 5 stars Answers lots of questions that were not clear.......2007-07-02

One thing that we all wondered was: "Why did Hill wait until Thomas was being evaluated for a position on the Supreme Court to make these allegations?" And it turns out that she did not and only brought these issues to thefore when found by an investigation into Thomas' background.

There were also a lot of details that were not apparent about the nature of the trial: 1. The congressional hearings were NOT conducted by attorneys, and so the usual rules of courtroom conduct and gathering evidence were not adhered to; 2. Some of the detailed nature of the ugliness toward people that are caught in the middle of congressional hearings (the documentary on Susan McDougal was another example of how the sheer hostility that politicians can display toward anyone that gets in the way); 3. Details of the statements that Thomas made to her. It was also more clear that the environment in which she was working (a person-- among MANY others-- trying to get thhe letters of recommendation and make the ties that would get her a job somewhere) might have made her a lot more timid in telling Thomas where to go with his remarks.

On the bad side, I can say that Hill's tone was the faintest bit melodramatic-- and this makes me wonder just how serious the comment made to her were-- noting that she offered information about the content of his statements but not direct quotes.

All in all, the book is very balanced and level-headed-- if a bit more wordy than necessary. (It could have been shortened by about 50 pages without missing anything-- although it was not nearly the verbose disaster of, say something written by Ayn Rand. On account of this, I'm taking off one star.)

3 out of 5 stars What an appropriate title: Speaking Truth to Power.......2006-04-12

At the beginning of the book Hill writes, "I did not choose the issue of sexual harassment, it chose me." And that is undoubtedly true. Anita Hill is a household name and her name immediately brings to mind the issue of sexual harassment. Hill describes how the issue chose her in this book.
You can tell just how truthful this book is by the way in which it was written. This is not the best written book. But, Anita Hill puts on no airs, she just tells the truth and the way she saw it in a simple, understandable voice.
And the truth is, she was put through the ringer by people in power who did not want to a) acknowledge that sexual harassment is a problem, and b) change the current widespread problem of sexual harassment and thus change our current power structure.
It is interesting to note how Hill relates the problem of sexual harassment to other crimes committed against women which are also motivated by power and control. These comparisons ring a bell of truth.
Hill also writes about how at times, when one is a ethnic minority and a woman, one has to choose between honoring their gender and honoring their race. Her analysis of this is enough to read the book.
I recommend this book to those who are interested in getting to know the real Anita Hill, those who are interested in insider politics especially when it concerns problems unique to women, and those who are interested in the way that different minority groups bisect each other.
The reason I didn't give this book a higher rating is because, as I mentioned, it's not the most well written book. I feel that at times the writing was circular and repetitive. The words don't leap off the page. However, also, at times the writing is very direct and potent and say the truth in a manner that is clear and concise. At those times, ideas leap off the page.

5 out of 5 stars Courageous and SO, SO TRUTHFUL.......2004-11-08

Anita Hill proves that she was telling the truth with this book and I always knew that she was.

It's so sad that so many were able to demonize and scandalize this woman and her intentions, but in the end, the TRUTH always wins.

This powerful autobiography is a MUST READ, a book that you won't be able to put down or to forget. I'm so glad I read it.

5 out of 5 stars She Continues to Deeply Touch My Life.......2002-09-03

When this book first came out, I was drawn to the cover, because I knew that there were many messages for me in this book. Yet, I hesitated to read this, because I had not voiced what I felt about those hearings.

I actually looked over my shoulders, when I glanced through this book, before buying it, because I had decided that so many people around me demanded my opinion of this tragedy.

When I watched the hearing, while I sat next to others, for whatever reason I waited to say whether or not I believed Dr. Hill. I wanted to process it all, in the privacy of my own space.

Watching her, on many levels I related to her. Yet, I had some unanswered questions that reading this book, along with other books that reference this tragedy helped me to make my own decisions about what happened.

Dr. Hill put a voice to many of the challenges that I had, as professional African-American woman, who wanted to speak about many issues that too high a number of African-Americans refused to communicate. Before reading this book, I wanted to be free to speak against some socialized rules that I grew up with, that are common in African-American families. But, I wanted to communicate that I am proud of being African-American.

And as a result of reading this book, I gained tremendous courage to fully live my life's mission, which is to guide women and girls to earn trust in themselves.

To this day, as a journalist, if an editor argues against Anita Hill, I refuse to write for that paper.

                      Thank you, Dr. Hill.

5 out of 5 stars a dignified and intelligent lady.......2002-05-31

I am so glad I read this book - it gave me insight into what a wonderful woman Anita Hill is in explaining the ordeal she went through in testifying at "the hearings." I must admit that at the time, I didn't believe Hill's testaments; she appeared nervous and uncertain whereas Thomas appeared very sure of himself, was outraged, and even went so far as to cry before the Senate Committee and television cameras. Of course, I now realize that was just an act.

Anyhow, I thought that after the hearings were over, Anita Hill went back home to Oklahoma and went on with her life, the ordeal forgotten. After reading this book, I had no idea that Hill endured further harassment from students at the university where she taught, faculty, the media, and people who never knew her nor she them. It was downright outrageous and disgusting.

Hill writes eloquently about her roots, her upbringing in Oklahoma, her years at Yale Univ. Law School, and her job at the EEOC where she worked under Clarence Thomas and the harassment she endured from him, her subsequent career change all the way up until the hearings. It's all interesting and worth reading.

Anita Hill is the catalyst for which the laws of sexual harassment have changed and claims for which are now taken very seriously. It is very unfortunate that she had to take such torment and emotional brutality as a result of it, as if harassment from Thomas wasn't enough in and of itself.

That Thomas is now sitting on the highest court in the land for life, knowing the content of his character and demeanor, is indeed disturbing. But I hope that deep inside he is sorry and feels the utmost remorse and guilt for his mistreatment of Anita Hill and all his other victims.

The truth always come out - maybe not today or tomorrow - but eventually it does. Thomas knows what he did, and the world knows what he did despite his "categorical" denials.

It is my hope that Anita Hill finds the peace and happiness she deserves. Her life will never be the same, as she herself admits, but unfortunately almost all movers and shakers's lives were and are forever changed.

An insightful and honest book, I recommend it highly.

                          Book Description

This hard-hitting collection of twelve interviews and previously unpublished lectures delves deep into the current state of Native North America and expands on the "Indigenist" political perspective popularized by Professor Ward Churchill. He is now nationally known for his controversial remarks concerning the culpability of the functionaries administering US economic and military policies, and Speaking Truth in the Teeth of Power is the perfect antidote to the smear campaign surrounding On the Justice of Roosting Chickens. The book opens with a lengthy interview conducted by journalist Joshua Frank concerning Churchill's remarks and the back story to the hoopla, which became a national debate in the spring of 2005.

"Life in Occupied America," delivered in Berkeley, provides a heart-wrenching account of the current state of Native America, and shows the toll that more than five hundred years of genocide in North America has taken on all of its inhabitants. Additional chapters include: "Before Predator Came: Reflections on Indigenous Reality," "Castles Built on Sand: An Indigenist View of Federal Indian Law," "The Next 500 Years," and "The Relationship of Genocide, Colonization, and Resistance in North America." Speaking Truth in the Teeth of Power is culled from lectures delivered at Ohio State, The Brecht Forum, Concordia University, and national conferences throughout North America.
