Maugham claimed that he was "in the very first row of the second-raters". Maybe, but maybe not.
While his style may not elevate his work to the status of "great literature," you owe it to yourself to read Maugham. This collection is a fine place to start. The Moon and Sixpence is based on the life of Paul Gaugin and The Magician is based more than loosely on Aleistar Crowley's exploits. Fascinating people who Maugham used to craft page-turning stories around.
Maugham is greatly underappreciated. This is a great collection to begin exploring his work.
Global Tour De Force!.......2001-01-05
The ability of this man to put insight within insight into the innermost knooks and crannies of the human condition and then palce you, the reader, almost, but not quite, clautrophobically close to the action (or often a lack of) is literally mesmerizing! He was not a man easily fooled by anyone. He then endows the reader with this insight from which I, for one, leaned a great deal.
Every one of his characters is keenly observed and fully fleshed into often tragic believability but always alive with their human-ness, warts and all.
I miss his stories more than any others when I'm finished. This collection is a global tour de force, rich in colour, intrigue and the dust that setles on the crooked paths his characters tread.
Get it, read it (several times), you won't be sorry!

There are four stories in this book. The Black Stranger, Wolves Beyond the Border, The Phoenix on the Sword and the Scarlet Citadel.
A tale of three brigands, that starts slow, and then rip-roars along. With multiple pirates, you know there has to be a treasure map. This time, to the Treasure of Tranicos.
Add in a mystical demon warrior, a bunch of raiding Picts, a couple of sieges, three pirates that can't trust each other, a beautiful woman, and Conan, and all hell will break loose.

This is pretty much a Conanless Conan story. Conan is away fighting in Aquilonian and we follow a man in the Westmerck near the Picts as he encounters shapeshifting and beast magic.

In a dream, a man magically enhances his sword, and that certainly comes in handy later when the odd traitor and demon relieves the tedium of the ruling class.

King Conan's army of Aquilonians has been smashed by a far superior force, led by a wizard. Conan refuses to sign over his kingdom, and the wizard throws him in a dungeon.
He escapes an assassin and a monster, and rescues a wizardly rival that Tsotha had imprisoned. This wizard, please, summons a flying steed to bear Conan back to his kingdom, to take revenge.

The Best of the "Original" Lancer Books Conan Series.......2000-06-30
When Lancer Books reissued the original Conan stories by Robert E. Howard, they enlisted the aid of L. Sprague DeCamp and Lin Carter to polish Howard's grammar, soften his more "politically incorrect" statements, and fill out the saga with pastiches. DeCamp and Carter wrote several stories out of whole cloth, but they also reworked a number of Howard stories starring other heroes into Conan stories. There was more DeCamp than Howard in this particular volume, and I am convinced that DeCamp could write Conan better than Howard could.

Easy recipes, but not so healthy.......2006-12-06
I really wanted to love this cookbook, especially since the color photos are appetizing, the food is quick and easy to prepare, and most of the recipes seem comforting. However, since this book touts itself as health-conscious, I cannot praise it. Too many of the recipes called for processed ingredients, e.g., bottled sauces (full of artificial thickeners and preservatives), seasoning packets (loaded with MSG/salt and man-made chemicals), ramen noodles (unhealthy trans-fats), even artificially-flavored cheese loaves (yuck!). There is also too much dependence on frozen and canned vegetables, which, though great at reducing cooking times once in a while, should not be the backbone of a healthy eating regimen. Very few recipes here consist of fresh ingredients. In addition, calorie counts seem conservative--I did my own analysis of ingredients on a few recipes and they seemed to have more calories than the book says. I know I'm not the expert, but if 2 ounces of plain pasta has 210 calories, how can 2 ounces of pasta in a cream vegetable sauce have only 215 calories?
Two stars, because the book is presented well and there are a few recipes in here that I will cook (and a few more that I will cook using substitutions of fresh ingredients). But to be honest, there are much better healthy cooking books out there. Try EatingWell's Healthy in a Hurry, or some of the Weight Watchers cookbooks (whether or not you need to lose weight, these provide excellent, healthy recipes).
Quick Healthy Meals.......2006-11-03
This is a great cookbook for working moms - the meals are very healthy and most of them can be whipped up in a half an hour or less. Some of the recipes, however, come out quite bland, which is why I gave the book 4 stars. Through trial and error I have learned which recipes need an extra 'boost' - although most recipes are really quite good. It's nice to be able to put healthy meals on the table, that is important to me and why I love this cookbook.

No more thumbing through other cookbooks, searching for the dishes that sound healthy. When we cook recipes out of this book we know we are eating good. Like with most cookbooks, I've picked a few favorites and pretty much ignore most of the book. Some of the recipes just don't sound very intersting. But I like how each recipe lists preparation and cooking time. This is the perfect cookbook for busy, working families who want to be assured they are serving up healthy meals. The recipes are easy to follow, there are no unusual or hard-to-find ingredients, it is nice how the spiral bound book lays flat, and there seems to be a lot of pictures.

Betty Crocker can be proud of this book! The recipes are appealing, with easy to follow directions,and good tasting meals that are healthy. I especially appreciate the analysis of the serving calories so I can see the fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, protein etc. that I watch for my husband's diet and the diet exchanges that I use as a diabetic. Anyone new to having a restrictive diet should consider this book. I highly recommend Beef with Bow-Tie Pasta(page 118)as I recieved a high mark of approval from my husband on this dish. I found the leftovers made a great cold lunch salad as a bonus.

This is the fifth book on animal communication I've read, and in my opinion, it's the best one yet. Aside from some new techniques that I hadn't found in other books, I found the chapter on overcoming communication barriers to be the most helpful. It gave several suggestions on what to do if you're having difficulty or feeling blocked, and they work!
I just completed a workshop with Debbie McGillivray, and it was equally as impressive. As someone who intends to do animal communication professionally, I highly recommend this book. Truly a great find!

This book is a page turner! The author Debbie McGillivray not only explains HOW to communicate and WHY you should but gives us clear examples of her teachings as reasons that we should interact with our pets and give them credit for their thoughts. Debbie includes personal interactions and tender stories about her own beloved family of pets and others she has personally helped. We have all seen pet psychics on television tell us what an animal is thinking but Deb includes backgroud information, contents of the communication and how she was able to help the pet or how the pet has actually communicated and helped its owner. She has blown me away with her spiritualality, trust and total belief in what she does and shares with anyone who really wants to learn.This book is a total package, a must read!

For Those Who Like Contemporary - Modern Style Windows.......2005-12-07
I thought this book had great ideas for a contemporary, modern apartment or home. It is not my own personal style, but I did find many of the window treatments interesting and creative.
There was the boxed out window on pg 8 and the trellised window treatment on the following page was very neat and clean. I also thought their treatment of the dormer/slanted window was great on page 14. One of my favorite treatments was the suede vertical roman shade, not necessarily the treatment itself, but how they attached them.
I would recommend this book if you lean towards the modern, ecclectic, contemporary style. I am going to purchase this book for a family member who loves modern, clean lines.

This book is not for the serious sewer or for anyone requiring more than a couple of inspiring ideas. This book was as fun as picking up a glossy magazine for a few minutes. It does help you think outside the proverbial box.

True, he'd rather his daughters steer clear of drugs and alcohol and avoid having sex until after he's dead, but he's well aware of the fact that they're living in the real world. Dads, talk to your daughters...........2007-07-10
This is pathetic. Cute. Funny. But should never be a substitute for developing and nurturing a relationship with your daughter. As 1 of 4 girls growing up and the mother of 2 daughters, I know what a girl needs: open communication with her father; unconditional love and support; and the self confidence it takes to judge each situation rationally and self assuredly. Dad, if you have to give your daughter this book to read so she knows what to do when the S-word becomes an issue, then you're NOT doing your job as a parent.
Not to mention that my son (whose older sisters, mother and father certainly made sure he respected girls!) would be totally insulted to know that any one would think he is only interested in the opposite sex so that he can get take advantage of her?? He and his college buddies think girls are great just because they are. And once he's read it, I'm sure he'll be happy to share his opinion!
This book is pretty much for silly parents who aren't comfortable raising their kids. Or for woman who are NOT ok with making sound judgments about men and simply saying, 'no, thanks'. It is certainly not appropriate as a 'advise handbook' for young girls.

Good book for pre-teen and teenage girls.......2006-11-03
My daughter really enjoyed reading this book. He helps young girls to see that they are valuable and important and should examine what boys are thinking and saying to them carefully. Although it's nice to feel boys find you attractive, he helps them understand in a really clean way why its more important to feel attractive from the inside out. It is a book that can help your daughter feel stronger about herself and her place in the world of dating and boys. It is probably more helpful for older girls but my preteen daughter got a lot out of it. I will save this one for her to read again when she is a little older becaue the advice will still apply. Overall, it's a good book because its says what most parents would like their daughters to hear if they could just get them to really listen--it's so much nicer when you have a nice, funny book to help you.

Okay, I just turned thirteen. So for my birthday, I get to go to B&N. (I'm a book worm) As I'm looking through the teens area, I notice this book. Ah, what the heck, couldn't hurt to take a peek, Right? Wrong. Hurt very much. That is to say that I was Laughing so hard, I was sure my sides were going to split. My dad is a major Worry Wort. I understand why he worrys, though. This book is just like my dad, only much funnier. And my dad is pretty funny. So this book is great. I highly recomend this for teen girls. No I'm not saying you have probs, but if for nothing else, It's a funny book. The things he talks about in the book ARE important, and it is important to wipe the tears out of your eyes so you could read it. My mom was busting up and nodding her head at the same time. My dad aproves of it as well. My sis is eight, and I'll give it to her when I'm done with it. So it's good for every one. I don't think boys will like it very much, though...

A book about people? No, a book about stereotypes........2005-06-05
When I found this book in the library searching for information for a paper on transvestites, I thought that this would be the perfect book, based on the title. I was terribly wrong and disappointed. The book analyzes cross-dressers and defines the sub-categories as if it were decribing a species of animals! "This means this" and "by this age the cross-dresser will have realized that." I was disgusted by it!
It seems to me that the author had no true interest in what he was writing about, he was just doing a scientific study. Looking at the subjects of his other books, I found no pattern whatsoever, which leads me to believe this was merely another piece of research he was getting paid for. It was not about a group of individuals, it was about a clan or herd; a "type" of people. Not at all a good source of information.
Not every crossdresser follows the patterns that Talamini sets for them. They are individuals; people, not a species.

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s ideas--his call for racial equality, his faith in the ultimate triumph of justice, his insistence on the power of nonviolence to bring about a major transformation of American society--are as vital and timely as ever. The wealth of his writings, both published and unpublished, are now preserved in this authoritative, chronologically arranged, multi-volume edition.
Volume Two begins with King's doctoral work at Boston University and ends with his first year as pastor of the historic Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. It includes papers from his graduate courses and a fully annotated text of his dissertation. There is correspondence with people King knew in his years prior to graduate school and a transcription of the first known recording of a King sermon. We learn, too, that Boston was where King met his future wife, Coretta Scott.
Accepting the call to serve Dexter, the young King followed the church's tradition of socially active pastors by becoming involved in voter registration and other social justice issues. In Montgomery he completed his doctoral work, and he and Coretta Scott began their marriage.
The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. represents a testament to a man whose life and teaching have had a profound influence, not only on Americans, but on people of all nations.
The Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project at Stanford University was established by the Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. in 1984.
