Customer Reviews:
Hardy with a happy ending........2003-12-04
I liked this book very much. Sure, critics have scorned it since it was first published, over a hundred years ago, but it is still a good read. Ethelberta is a complex character; she is a woman supporting her mother and ten siblings by finding profitable work as a poet and a storyteller. She is usually criticized for her coldness (so unladylike) when she considers marrying a rich man in order to solve her family's financial problems, but I see it as courage. Ethelberta dreams of her own success and freedom, but her first thought is the safety and comfort of her family, especially the younger children. She is the brains of the whole operation; they support her plans by following her orders.
In addition, Hardy uses this book to explore class distinctions in Victorian England, one of his recurring themes. Since Ethelberta's father is a butler, her family belongs eternally to the working class, and the only way she can mingle freely with the gentry is by drawing on her late husband's name and pretending to be what she is not. The charade works, but exacts a severe mental toll. She says that she feels like two people and she wakes up in the night terrified that someone will find out the truth and expose her. What kind of society is so stratified that this type of discovery causes such strong fear?
Unlike the better-known Hardy novels, this one has a happy ending for nearly all of the characters. Some critics say that it has a weak, "happily ever after" fairy tale quality. But I think Hardy didn't need Ethelberta to meet the usual tragic fate. The story isn't about her inability to accept the realities of life; Ethelberta accepts her world as she finds it, but she twists the rules of society in order to reach her goals. Therefore, she expects those rules to continue working perfectly, and this leads to the happy ending when she marries the rich man and provides for her family while at the same time gaining legitimate entrance to upper class society.
A novel for die-hard Hardy fans and academics.......1998-09-02
Ethelberta is not a book I would recommend to most people, and certainly not to someone who has never read Hardy. The novel is tediously written and lacks the depth pervasive in other works set in the country. Only in the last hundred or so pages did the story become engrossing. Why then did I continue reading? Deriving some measure of enjoyment from this book requires that the reader look at it as an example of Hardy's development as an author. The scholarly introduction and notes provide explanations that help with this analysis and make the novel more interesting.
Book Description
Hardy's rags-to-riches tale--a virtual parody of the pop romances of his time--was a deliberate move away from his rural subjects to a more sophisticated urban setting. The story of a humbly born woman who marries a dashing aristocrat, it was, like much of Hardy's fiction, about rigid class conventions and the heartbreaking romantic difficulties they can cause.

Customer Reviews:
A series book better than the first!.......2005-10-14
What a great book! One of the few books that I have ever read and literally not been able to put down. Think it took all of about three hours to read this for me I was so enthralled. The entire series is good, but Torment is a shining example of how a rough sketched story can be turned into a true literary gem by a talented writer.
Great, captivating tale.
One of the best books I've ever read.......2004-11-21
That's not saying much considering I don't read a lot, but this book is awesome. The parts with Llawan and Laquatus are kinda boring but they don't ruin it by any means. I didn't really like the ending, but overall the book was 5/5 for me. This is one of the few magic storylines I've actually given a crap about. (The other being weatherlight.)
Even though the Odyssey cycle has been gone for over 2 years, you should definately still pick this book up.
Excellent Read! .......2004-09-09
This was a superb read. It is, by far, the best of the three Odyssey block books.
In a nutshell, the first half or so covers the same timespan as Odyssey, just from Chainer's point of view. While Kamahl is off chasing the Mirari, Chainer is developing his magical skills and is rapidly ascending the ranks as the Cabal's best dementist. With the aid of the Mirari (he is the only person so far who has been able to control it), he seems virtually unstoppable. The view into the Cabal's dark intentions is quite entertaining, as we learn more and more about the mysterious Calchexas, the Cabal Patriarch. The book ends in a big climax and leaves readers with an excellent starting point for Judgment.
This book earns a well-deserved 5 stars.
Chainer is the man!.......2003-10-20
This is my 2nd favorite book I have ever read in my life. This is the 3rd Magic book that I read, and after this I was captivated by the MTG novels, I have now read over 10 of them in only 4 weeks, and these are great books, Torment is my favorite so far. From beginning to end, it is AWESOME. There are a few boring parts when it follow Empress Llawan, but they are all worth it because they lead up to make a valuable point. I reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys fiction, such as Harry Potter or MTG, it also reminds me of LOTR a little bit.
Great Book!.......2003-07-08
This is a great book from beggining to end! After I read this book, I got really hooked on to magic after I read this book.
Book Description
Return to Rocheworld is the first of four sequels to the science fiction novel Rocheworld by Robert L. Forward (Baen Books, New York, 1990). The other sequels that follow this one are: Ocean Under the Ice, Marooned on Eden, and Rescued from Paradise. In Return to Rocheworld, the humans from Earth and their multiton jelly-blob alien friends, the “flouwen” from the ocean-covered lobe of the double-planet Rocheworld, fly to the desert-dry lobe of Rocheworld where they discover ancient ancestors of the flouwen, adapted to the harsh life on the dry lobe.
Customer Reviews:
A vehicle for scientific speculation. Fascinating!.......2000-12-02
This is the second title (out of five) in the Rocheworld Saga. The humans sent to Barnard's system discovered intelligent (in the most stringent sense of the word) life on Rocheworld, a weird double planet subject to complex dynamics and tidal forces. These aliens -the flouwen- are aquatic amoeba-like creatures living in the oceans of Eau, one of the lobes of the double planet. The flouwen are centuries ahead of us in Mathematics, but have no technology.
In this book, the flouwen are explored more in depth. We learn about their physiology and social structure. Using human technology, the flouwen get into space for the first time, and help the humans in their exploration of Roche, the second lobe of Rocheworld. Then, two longly-separated evolutionary branches meet again...
As with many other Forward's books, neither plot nor characterization are the strongest points in this novel. However, Forward manages once again to put together so much thought-provoking scientific speculation that makes you forget any other deficiencies.
Having read "Rocheworld" (aka "The Flight of the Dragonfly") before starting this novel is obviously recommended, but I guess one could even get into the story without it.

Neat Little Book.......2006-07-28
A little history, a suggested tea party for each month, recipes and nice art.
Not what I expected but it is OK.......2005-05-14
I already new about most of the party ideas from tea parties I attended. I wanted something to make mine special. In generel, it is OK.
a beautiful book on tea parties.......2000-07-07
This book starts with 4 pages of tea history and brewing instructions and then has 3 pages of "how to's" for tea parties. There is a theme tea for every month with menus and suggestions. There are approximately 4 recipes included with each month, so having another tea-time cookbook is advisable. Two of my favorites are "The Book of Afternoon Tea" by Lesley Mackley and "Totally Teatime Cookbook" by Helene Siegel.
As far as "how to's" for tea parties, "Tea with Friends" by Elizabeth Knight has more information, but fewer recipes. Even so, this makes a beautiful gift book.
Let's have a tea party!.......1999-08-08
If you've ever wanted to host a tea party but didn't know where to start, this is the perfect book to get you started. Great party menus, great recipes, and enough information about tea to teach the beginner. A must have for any tea- lover.
A little something for everyone!.......1999-03-13
Everytime I go throught this boook I find soemthing new. The book is complete with history and fun and creative ideas for any occassion. The receipies are good and simple. Delightful insights in every chapter. A must for your tea collection.

Very Usefull.......2007-10-06
The book is excellent and provides a usefull information for raise and American Pitbull Terrier
Easy read for those who want to know more about the breed........2007-01-11
This book was helpful when I first got my APT a few years back. Besides teaching you the basics of taking care of him/her, it also goes into how the breed has been abused and misinterpreted. American Pitbull Terriers can be the most loyal and friendliest of dogs, if taken care of properly. (I can attest to that, being a former owner).
Wonderful, informaitive, Truthful.......2003-11-20
This book gives a truthful picture of APBT's. It also has exclent information on caring for this breed through it's life. I purchased it for my mother, who was nervous about the breed, before I adopted my dog. After reading the book she was looking forward to having the adition to the family come and was sharing her new found info with friends and family who had negitive reactions when hearing I was getting an APBT. An exclent book to have on hand and share with those intrested in the breed, who own the breed, and who don't know the breed.
Don't judge this wonderful breed of dog!.......2003-03-23
Even though I knew that this dog wasn't as "mean and aggressive" as people made it seem, this book was extremely interesting and i learned many new facts. Besides being a great care-guide, it explains the breed's character and history.Everything that you would ever want to know about the American Pit Bull Terrier can be found in this book, accuratly portrayed. The book is clear on how to prevent accidental fights and that this great dog should only be owned by responsible people. Hopefully the APBT will one day gain the respect they deserve and people will know the truth about them.
A wonderful book for APBT owners and fans!.......2001-04-25
As an owner of a 90+ pound APBT, I have tried to read all the books and articles I could find on the subject of pit bulls. This is BY FAR the best book I have found. Many writers of such books are extremely one sided, either portaying the dogs a vicious killers or as baby dolls. Mr. Stahlkuppe very fairly shows the good points of these dogs, as well as the bad. This book should be required reading for all prospective pit bull owners.

A Closetful of Doll Clothes.......2005-02-25
Rosemarie Ionker very rightly describes her designs as not for beginning seamstresses. Some of the directions are confusing, and it can be daunting finding the right pattern pieces. The styles make up beautifully, though.
I wouldn't recommend them for most modern dolls..without making up paper towel or muslin "shams" first. The 14" clothes vary in size/fit. Some items fit both my antique Schoenhut and the Tonner Betsy McCall (14" patterns) Some don't, usually being too large.
However! The illustrations and ideas alone are worth the price of the book. I just wish the embroidery patterns were available as transfers! And it's an excellent resource for the experienced doll costumer. I'm glad I bought it!!
A Trouseau of Doll Clothes.......2004-11-24
The author, Rosemarie Ionker, is well established in the doll world with her doll clothing company "Petite Creations". Her company offers the highest quality doll clothing line available, so she speaks with the voice of experience. But, Ionker herself confesses in the text of this book that her designs are not for beginning seamstresses. They are presented for those who aspire to the level of detail, design and professionalism found in the garments offered by her company.
The patterns in this book are for 4 specific dolls. The 20 inch doll and the 11 1/2 inch doll are Marley and (original)Bethany by Kish and Company, for whom Ionker regularly designs. The 18 inch doll and 14 inch doll are porcelain dolls by Diana Effner. These dolls are featured on the cover of the book are referred to throughout the text. There is no reference to these patterns being generic, and little reference for adapting them for other dolls. Of course, they can be used for other dolls. The doll measurements are given so you know if your doll is of a similar size, but the seamstress of these garments will have to determine if the patterns need to be adjusted and how to do that.
In this book, Ionker offers patterns for coordinated "wardrobes" or "trousseus" for dolls. The basic pieces for each doll include a coat, dresses, and undergarments. She suggests usage for color themes and fabric choices, and instructs on the use of trim. She offers sewing tips and pattern notes. There is a page identifying each pattern piece in a one page layout. The reader can then find the pattern pieces in the correct size by going to the chapter for each doll.
I would not recommend this book for modern 18 inch dolls. It is more tailored for artist quality vinyl dolls and porcelain dolls. The patterns are for clothing items now considered old-fashioned for today's children and are not pieces for modern wardrobes. These are lovely designs, though, for fans of Petite Creations. Smocking and embroidery make the photo section of this book eye candy for the adult doll collector. Whatever challenges this book may hold for the less experienced seamstress, it more than makes up for in inspiration.
Great patterns and easy to sew!.......2004-05-24
I wanted to make doll clothes for my granddaughter's various dolls and this book has been wonderful! It has patterns for 11 1/2 inch, 14 inch, 18 inch, and 20 inch dolls. They include a coat, panties, dresses, pinafores, blouses, bloomers, jumpers, collar variations, sleeve variations and embroidery/embellishment suggestions.
I simply copied the patterns and cut them out, chose some fabrics I had at hand and started sewing. Basic sewing skills are all that are needed to enjoy making these little clothes; 1/4 inch seams are allowed. If you don't have a machine, they could easily be done by hand as they are small.
A few bits of ribbon and lace, some recycled clothing for fabrics and your dolls can have a complete new wardrobe!
Adorable.......2004-01-10
Adorable outfits with pin tucks, smocking, & even hand embroidered details. Because Dolls' dressmaker doesn't have those things, I recommend this book in addition to The Dolls' Dressmaker. Now my life is complete! (or at least my collection of doll patterns is!).
Not for beginners.......2002-12-13
This book offers beautifully designed doll clothing patterns and advice about sewing for dolls in general. However, it is not for beginners as it gives a minimum of construction information. It would have been nice if the smocking designs had been included, but they are not.All in all, it is a beautiful book that will stimulate your imagination to sew for your dolls. It does offer patterns in several useful sizes so that you can make a complete wardrobe for several of your dolls.

Book Description
`Of realty the rarest-veined unraveler', John Duns Scotus was one of the profoundest metaphysicians who ever lived. In this volume, the world's foremost Scotus scholars collaborate to present the latest research on his work. In ethics, the focus is on practical wisdom, on beauty as an ethical concept, and on the independence of the virtues; in metaphysics, on modality, individuation, and being. Textbook accounts notwithstanding, Scotus's theory of logical possibilities implies no existence or actuality for possible beings though being and thinking presuppose the domain of possibility; potency only supervenes on the actual. There are important 13th-century precursors of Scotus's theory of modality and individuation. Posterior to quidditative entity, Scotus clearly distinguishes the ultimate reality of individual beings both from individuals and from individuality.

A valuable contribution to American Art history.......2005-10-21
This book is an extremely valuable contribution to the history of American art. Kirschke carefully describes and explains the life of Aaron Douglas----from his childhood in Kansas, to the heights of the Harlem Renassaince, and to his teaching position at Fisk University in his twilight years. Kirschke captures the essense of both the Harlem Renassaince and the life of Aaron Douglas with superb research and excellent prose.
An authoritative treatment.......2001-09-22
For those who have become interested in Douglas' art, this sets it and his life in a broader context. Very satisfying.
