It is quite a mistake to believe that people who live by themselves find every day a lonely one. Miss Peck and many other solitary persons could assure us that it is very seldom that they feel their lack of companionship. As the habit of living alone grows more fixed, it becomes confusing to have other people about, and seems more or less bewildering to be interfered with by other people's plans and suggestions.

They have been with us all through history: The "Invisible College" of wisdom, and their adversaries---the destroyers---who rise from the flames to burn again. The history of the world is their story: a conspiracy as vast and all-encompassing as the riddle of time itself.

In Naples, Italy, in 1764, a young aristocrat is about to stumble onto one piece of the great pattern. Through a heartless murder and his passion for the beautiful daughter of his enemy, young Sigismundo Celine uncovers the mystery of the Rossi brigade, former M.A.F.I.A. assassins, and the secret agenda of the dreaded Inquisition.

In the wind of the raging social storm that will soon tear through Europe and America with the flame of revolution, Sigismundo begins his journey of discovery, joined by the boy Mozart, Dr. Frankenstein, Casanova the spy, lover and magician...and a mysterious violet-eyed assassin who calls him "brother."

4 out of 5 stars Best of the three.......2006-08-21

I absolutely loved this book. It would be a five star review, except for the fact that I've already read the two follow-ups. They betray the fact that RAW burned through all his best ideas on the first book. What appear in EWS as great set-ups for subsequent books turned out to be one-shots, left to die on the vine in the rest of the series. The Widow's Son is also a good book, but RAW spent too much time on farcical footnotes and not enough on character and plot development. So some of the genius of The Earth Will Shake is ruined by lack of cultivation.

Still, I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction, conspiracies and using the arts to help liberate mankind.

5 out of 5 stars Historical fiction, fun, sun and piracy.......2006-01-12

Robert Anton Wilson has proven to be capable of extraordinary talent with this series. Mixing fiction with non-fiction he weaves one of the most satisfying Masonic related tales to be discovered and published. The Earth Will Shake, The Widows Son and Natures God are a type of writing that I had previously not encountered through Wilson. This series can actually be very inspiring, and it's written in such a dramatic way I am convinced it would make an excellent movie. Yet, at the end of the series, the reader sees reference to the fourth book "The World Turned Upside Down", and alas, it is non-existant. Whatever reason Bob has for abandoning us devout readers of this series (I have read all three books three times and stolen much wit from them) I urge you, dear Bob, please don't leave us hanging, finish the fourth book! More! More! Your Friend, Joey

5 out of 5 stars Earth Still Shaking .......2005-12-29

I read this book back in the late 80's when it was printed by a mass-market publisher (Signet, I think) containing two abridged volumes; The Earth Will Shake and The Widow's Son. I loved it then and was never able to find Nature's God. Now I have all 3 books. After re-reading this edition, I've enjoyed it twice as much!! There is still yet an unpublished forth book, "The World Turned Upside Down" and we're all awaiting this gem to be published. Earth Will Shake is a coming of Age novel set in the enlightenment era where a murder happens in church during an Easter mass. From that point on it's a roller coster ride of wicked but serious fun. You are enlightened by the sheer weight of the subject matter that continues to this day. In these works you meet diverse characters who are historically real. I.e., the young Mozart, Count Cagliostro and Casanova, just to name a few. Dan Brown though entertaining, is comparatively an amateur hack when writing about the Illumniati (see for yourself and read this. You won't be disappointed). When the Da Vinci Code got ALL the attention, there was no mention of this work and I find that a sad reality though parr for the course in these "shaky" times. Remember, "reality is what you can get away with"...

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-09-06

Anything by Robert Anton Wilson is worth reading. His Illuminati stuff is doubly so. The original Illuminatus Trilogy is one of the greatest scifi, horror, thriller, political, historical, adventure and pornographic novels ever written. All of the Historical Illuminatus books are equally well done, equally fun to read, and equally true historically.

5 out of 5 stars Back at last! Move aside, Dan Brown..........2005-06-15

In the early 1980's, I lived in San Francisco. I knew actual members of the OTO, mysterious avant garde musicians, punk rockers and performance artists, bicycle messengers, typesetters, cabinet makers and optical laser artists. My life was going to hell on drugs and alcohol. I regret not a moment of it, but several things got me through the bad time. One was a book by Robert Anton Wilson called THE COSMIC TRIGGER. He somehow manages to mix mysticism and skepticism and pragmatism and wit. This Robert Anton Wilson is a metaphysician, good for the angst that might take your very life.

He had also written the famous ILLUMINATI! trilogy, the Schrodinger's Cat series, but had not yet started the series that begins with this very book.

This book is a prequel to the Illuminatus trilogy, in exactly the same way that Neil Stephenson's QUICKSILVER preludes CRYPTONOMICON, only in a much more profound vein.

Meet Sigismundo Celine (obviously the ancestor of the pirate Hagbard Celine we meet in Wilson's earlier/later tale) he is Parsifal, and his tale begins with the death of his father, or not his father, but then he kills his own father. Get out your secret decoder ring, kids--Wilson was on a deeper plane here than either Dan Brown, the aforementioned Stephenson, or even George Lucas--yet mining much of the same territory.

Magic and Madness. Sin and Redemption. Conspiracies and Initiation. If you are smart enough to read this book--the next one is a real doozy--certainly the best book Wilson ever wrote.

Then there was a break of more than a decade. Every time I heard Wilson on the radio (KPFK in the dead of night--he has a fan base out here in California)I would call and beg him for the third book. When it did arrive it was excellent but had lost the wind, somehow. Possibly it was me. Readers are half the reading.

But these books are the REAL MAGILLA. If you understand what RAW is saying here--it will enter your mind like a virus and it will change you. This is not just fiction. You are warned.

Sixteen years ago I appeared in a play by Robert Anton Wilson called WILHELM REICH IN HELL. It was in a small nightclub in Long Beach--but I got to meet the great man. As Tim Leary once said of him, Wilson was glowingly sane. (or was that what wilson said of leary???) The proof is on the page, and this one waits for YOU.

(Robert Anton Wilson--if you read this review, please write us the fourth book. I have read nearly every word you have ever written, even magazine articles and this is the one to leave us gasping--if you can't, I understand. We face tomorrow unafraid and carry the meme of freedom. Persevere.

Fifty issues--collected into 15 volumes that total 2000 pages--the Hernandez brothers' Love and Rockets is an enormous achievement that helped to create a new audience for comics. Notable for their strong female characters and their focus on relationships, rather than on traditional comic-book 'action', the stories collected in this volume, and the rest of the series, show how the comic format can be used to create characters and situations as detailed and compelling as in any novel.

Reviewers have compared Gilbert Hernandez's work--set in the fictional Latin American town of Palomar-- with that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Robert Altman. Reading his brother Jaime's work--most of which focuses on a group of Southern California Mexican American women--is like reading Tolstoy, if only Tolstoy had written about twenty-something punk girls. Love and Rockets has certainly earned its legendary reputation among the comic-book cognoscenti, and deserves to be read by an even wider audience. Welcome to the world of Los Bros Hernandez.

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best of the first L&R series.......2003-08-23

If you haven't read Love & Rockets, start here. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is loose, funny, sad, and unlike anything you're read before. Jaime Hernandez writes women better than just about anyone. And he knows when to stop drawing and move on to the next panel.

The only drawback is the length --- I wish he'd write a full-size, 500-page graphic novel. Something that takes a few days to read. Chester Square is a hint of what that would be like.

                        5 out of 5 stars Art + Literature = Los Bros Hernandez.......2003-07-15

Chester Square is #13 in the complete Love and Rockets collection, and is written and illustrated by Jaime Hernandez. These L n' R collections are satisfying because they give you a significant chunk of our heroines' lives (and occasional dreams or fantasies). The stories are not always linear and not all the same, so there is no need to start with L and R #1. Los Bros Hernandez had not yet fully developed their voices with their first issues. In fact, I recommend you just grab a collection and start reading (this or "Wigwam Bam" are good places to start). If you like a character or storyline, you can continue to pursue it through some of the other trade paperbacks. Things are much easier to follow in book form than in the comic books.

In "Chester Square," star Hernandez Brother, Jaime, is in fine form and at the peak of his powers. These stories concern the realistic life of former punk-rock chica Maggie (aka Perlita, aka Perla, aka the Maggot, aka Margarita, etc) in her California home and some sketchy areas nearby. In Chester Square she clashes with locals, has a crushing realization of other's perceptions of her, and finds revenge isn't always what it's cracked up to be. She also spends some time with her tia (aunt) who was a pro wrestler and now is a respected wrestling coach. The wrestling stuff is cool, but it's not the main focus. Maggie's internal struggles are the true crux of the story.

Hernandez breathes life into everything in his comics in a way which is almost uncanny. With a few perfect illustrations, he creates a place, Chester Square, and suddenly new characters begin peering at us (and our heroine, Maggie) from dusty doorways. When Xaime draws a group of four women, each person has a perfectly rendered, individual body type. In Jaime's illustrations, all types can be beautiful, and they often are. He still amazes me when he captures a human look or body type I've never seen drawn before. As you read, you'll realize each of these characters has a fully formed personality, way of speaking and personal history. And you'll probably want to know more about all of them.

If you're like most readers, you'll care a lot about Maggie and Hopey. This book is from Maggie's perspective, and for the most part, you really get a chance to get inside her head. And who is usually there? Long time friend, and sometime lover, Hopey. Will they ever realize they should go to Canada and get married? I hope so. Everyone else does!

From the super-cool first splash page, where "Xaime" signs his name on the actual Chester Square motel sign (complete with missing letter) to the semi-resolved relief of the ending, this book is pure sequential literature of the highest quality.

                        Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars great great art; ignore the hype about the soap opera story.......2001-04-17

While Jaime Hernandez, the writer, did somehow manage to avoid the laughable pretentions that derailed his brother ( a third-rater who must have believed the utterly ridiculous comparisons to Gabriel Marquez that his pseudosophisticated publishers promote him with), it is Jaime, the artist, who is the reason to buy this book. Jaime's stories are simple character-driven entertainments written at a sitcom or soap-opera level; unless you are a bored teenager or one of those comic book nerds who think this stuff (so blissfully free of any annoying big words or anything resembling an idea) is literature of some kind, the words in the balloons can usually be ignored with profit. Notice instead the crystalline qulity of the draughtsmanship, supreme in this field, and the ability to elegantly spot in areas of black that combined make Jaime's work wildly superior to 95 percent of the stuff that makes it into those "best of" illustration annuals (and at a fraction of the price). His only flaw is that his drawing is so robotically perfect that it is flat emotionally; if you've seen one of his books in his mature style, you've seen them all. Nevertheless, if you care about drawing you do need to see at least one, and this is as good as any. Just don't be put off by the insane manner in which Love and Rockets is promoted and miss this, or, even worse, believe the hype and expect this to be literature of any quality and be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The end of an era........2000-08-30

It's been 4 yrs since Love & Rockets ended and I'm alomst over it. For the uninitiated Love & Rockets is the most fulfilling experience you'll ever have with paper. Over 15 yrs something amazing was created by the Hernandez Bros. and Chester Square wraps up one part, that which follows the lives and loves of probably the most endearing women in modern American fiction, Maggie and Hopey. Chester Square is an extremely satisfying experience which focusses on a confused Maggie as she tries life without Hopey. The end wraps everything up so beautifully that you'll weep tears of joy. Make sure you read the follow up series "Penny Century" as it just gets better.

5 out of 5 stars If you like "Love and Rockets," you'll love Chester Square.......2000-08-05

Chester Square was my first L&R book. I've read almost all of them now, and while the stories in Chester Square are even looser than most L&R's, this has some of Jaime's best art and Maggie is truly at her finest. If you like L&R, especially if you dig Maggie and Hopey - buy Chester Square.

Who doesn't love dim sum, those enticing dumplings, buns, and pastries served in Chinatowns everywhere? But making it at home? This seemingly formidable business now proves infectiously doable, thanks to Ellen Leong Blonder's Dim Sum. Coauthor of the IACP-award-winning cookbook Every Grain of Rice, Blonder has found a way, through lucid explanation and her own telling illustration, to help readers reproduce dim sum favorites themselves. Ranging from Pork and Shrimp Siu Mai, Potstickers, and Chinese Chive Dumplings to Scallion Pancakes and Three-Mushroom Dumplings and more, these delicious nibbles--great cocktail fare as well as wonderfully tasty meals--are also fun to prepare.

Beginning with a discussion of the dim sum restaurant experience and the kinds of tea involved, the book then offers concise data on setting up a steamer, making doughs, and advance preparation. The 80 recipes follow in chapters that include breads and baked dishes, such as Steamed Char Siu Bao (barbecued-pork-filled buns), and rice and rice flour specialties, like Chicken and Sausage Rice Bowl and Rice Flour Rolls with Beef. Greens and pan-fried dishes are also covered with the tempting likes of Pea Shoots with Garlic, as are deep-friend and bean curd specialties, including Deep-Fried Stuffed Eggplant and Salt-Fried Whole Prawns. Recipes for dim sum sweets like Almond Pudding and Egg Custard Tarts are also offered, as are interesting sidebars--A Trip to the Luk Yu Tea House is one--and ingredient notes, menus, and supply resources. This is one of those happy cookbooks that tackle a potentially problematical subject beautifully, delivering the kitchen ease and good eating it promises. --Arthur Boehm

                        Book Description

In Cantonese, “dim sum” means “touch the heart,” and Ellen Blonder’s charming celebration of China’s famed tea lunch does just that. More than sixty carefully crafted, authentic recipes, each illustrated with Ellen’s exquisite watercolor paintings, put the key to re-creating these delectable morsels in every cook’s hand.
Anyone who has enjoyed the pleasures of a dim sum meal has inevitably wondered what it would be like to create these treats at home. The answer, surprisingly, is that most are quite simple to make. From dumplings to pastries, Dim Sum is filled with simple, foolproof recipes, complete with clear step-by-step illustrations to explain the art of forming, filling, and folding dumpling wrappers and more. Ellen Blonder offers her favorite versions of traditional Pork and Shrimp Siu Mai, Turnip Cake, and Shrimp Ha Gow, each bite vibrantly flavored, plus recipes for hearty sticky rice dishes, refreshing sautéed greens, tender baked or steamed buns, and a variety of pastries and desserts—all the ingredients required for an authentic, restaurant-style dim sum feast. Practical advice on designing a tea lunch menu and making dim sum ahead of time round out this irresistible collection.

Lovingly created from years of tasting, refining, and seeking out the best dim sum recipes from San Francisco to Hong Kong, Dim Sum is a gem that any student of Chinese cooking will treasure.

I not only loved this as a cookbook but also for the stories that are recounted throughout.

I have loved Dim Sum from my first experiences in Singapore and wanted to try something at home that was more creative than normal. I have already tried 8 of the recipes with varying success (through NO fault of the book - only my lack of practice creating some of the delicate folds in the wheat starch dough).

                        Couple of hints:
                        1) Practice, practice, practice
                        2) Before doing a full meal, there is a resources section at books end that has great suggestions for combinations that can mostly be made ahead.
                        3) Finally - if you really want to do alot and often, invest in multiple bamboo steamers. I just purchased my fifth and sixth. Dinner table now reminds me of Dim Sum houses from my past...

I was delighted to see recipes in the book for some of my dim sum favorites like turnip cakes and different green vegetables. We fixed a dim sum banquet last night and every single dish we prepared was wonderful - we wouldn't have changed a thing in the recipes. It's wonderful to see my 9 and 10 year old children taking 2nds and 3rds of green vegetable dishes!

Initially loved the book for the beautiful illustrations which made my mouth water. Some recipes require a few trials & errors to get the most authentic result but it's a good start!

This book covers many animals that humans have as pets--from the large like horses to the small like fish. Many people think that aromatherapy is safe. This book tells you in detail what can and cannot be used, how strong the mixture, how often and the consequences of over-dose.
So you can use therapeutic aromatherapy with a clear mind, knowing you are benefitting rather than harming your "buddies".
Also a great reference book if you are helping animals

We can always rely on the editors at Scott to provide the best in indexing stamps in their catalogue Volumes, even though we may not always agree with their catalogue values. However, for newer Volumes, consider the classifieds in the back of Linn's, where you can pick up a newer and/or a current Volume for what you would have to pay here for one that is a few years old.

An excellent resource book for beginning sewers and anyone who likes shortcuts. Makes extensive use of unfinished hems and rubber bands, yet still gets beautiful decorator-style results.

                                      Book Description

Whiz! Bang! Pop! Blam! Roy Lichtenstein has rendered everything from a comic-book cell and a warplane to a country landscape and a turkey in his trademark style drawn from printed advertisements and cartoons. A master mixer of popular culture and high art, Lichtenstein's painterly use of Benday dots and heavy outlines turned oil paintings into something they had never before come close to. This catalogue chronicles the evolution of his brushstroke and painterly style from the late 50s through the 90s, complete with photographs of the artist at work, and reproductions of paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Critic and scholar Dave Hickey's highly original and compelling personal essay challenges the way we traditionally think about Lichtenstein's art.

                                          Book Description

This "profoundly erotic, profoundly compelling" (The Los Angeles Times) account of an American student's adventures in Russia is a classic revelation of her eternal qualities. The unforgettable cast of characters is led by his beautiful, capricious girlfriend and a supreme hedonist who has been called The Russian Falstaff. Submerged in the supposedly puritan country's private devotion to food, drink, sex, and despair, the narrator, a London reviewer found, "seems to catch the soul of the Soviet citizen." "Feifer is possibly unique", a second London critic delighted, "for having written a book with several layers of brilliance."

5 out of 5 stars A book that captured my imagination and changed my life.......2004-07-04

The first time I read Feifer's book, I was 14 years old. I read it again this summer, after I had returned from Russia, a trip that "Moscow Farewell" helped inspire. The book is so brilliant, so accurate, so timeless that some 30+ years later, the paralells between his life in Moscow and mine in St. Petersburg are eerie. It is a story that lives in your imagination and your heart, and I often find myself wondering about George and his life after the book ends...

                                          5 out of 5 stars Still true..........2003-05-25

Fantastic, I have been in moscow for 5 years and been working, meeting people and got the street-pulse. George Feifer's book is showing the russian's mentality with happiness and large respect. The russian people is a proud people who has been through some hard times and Mr Feifer lets you know how they got by. Today Soviet is Russia, but a lot is still the same, still true...The book is very up lifting, I lift my hat off to you George...

5 out of 5 stars The Book is great, and George Feifer is one cool cat........2001-11-01

I think this book is great. Plus, George Feifer is awesome. He's a friend of the family and he's definitely one of the coolest guys I know. And coming from a teenager, that's a lot. Well, anyways, everyone should definitely read this book. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for Everyone.......2001-08-11

This fantastic book offers a wonderful view of a young man experiencing life to its fullest--in Soviet Moscow. Extremely well-written, funny, and insightful, it shares its best qualities with those in Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye," Roth's "Portnoy's Complaint," and Kerouac's "On the Road." Reading this book will make you feel good. It is a book for everyone.

                                                      Book Description

In this novel for young teens, Nathan Kravetz tells the story of Mark Lerner, a Jewish boy who lived in what was once the Soviet Union.

Mark's father, an engineer with a strong devotion to his family, his faith, and to freedom, has asked permission for them to leave for Israel. For this "hostile" act against the strict authoritarian government, Alexander Lerner has been put into prison. The Soviet government has "refused" his request to emigrate. He is, along with many other Jews, now a "refusenik."

Then, at a brief time of relaxed rules, the Soviet authorities permit Mark and his mother to emigrate. They look forward to going to Israel and to wait there for Alexander Lerner's release from prison.

This story takes the reader from Moscow with Mark and his mother to their experiences after leaving the country. Mark's adventures, though fiction, are based on actual events. They did happen.
