The Archangels of Dreamland by Steven Fawcette is a great read! I found the combination of Sci Fi and End Day Theology intriguing--- reminiscent of C.S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet. The writing is fastidious especially regarding facts and details about locations. I've visited a number of the places in the novel and his detailed descriptions were all spot on. My point is that Mr. Fawcette's inclusion of detail and facts makes his novel so believable and captivating that I am eagerly awaiting a sequel. No wonder it has been tapped to be a movie--I can just see Bruce Willis and Denzel Washington in it!

What a rush! I don't know that I've ever read a book with this much action in it. The story just takes you by the throat and refuses to let go. What a great movie this will make. It may be the first true "popcorn novel" ever written. Pure entertainment from start to finish. Loved every bit of it. You will too.

This is life at the bottom of the food pyramid, that glorious culinary domicile where all residents are allowed to eat all they want of whatever's on the shelf--whenever they want to eat it. First published in 1976, Bumgarner's whole-grains cookbook has withstood the test of time . The author has returned to her original material and updated recipes to reflect new ideas about salt and fat content, and she addresses the differences in the average household's available time that have cropped up in the last 20 years. 5 out of 5 stars My new favorite cookbook.......2006-10-02

I bought this cookbook a few years ago, read through it, fixed a couple of cookie and muffin recipes, then put it away. Recently I got it out again and cooked some entrees and they were incredible! I am stuffed at the moment from Eggplant Cassarole. It was so good I nearly couldn't stop eating. Last week we had red beans and rice, the week before Black-eyed Chicken. The recipes take a little more time because of the ingredients (dried beans, rice, etc.) but not a lot of work. But oh the taste -- it's totally worth it! My husband has raved about his leftovers lately. Highly recommended.

          3 out of 5 stars Not a Vegetarian Cookbook.......2005-02-13

I just got this cookbook. I am a vegetarian and thought that this would be a good book to use. I haven't tried any of the recipes, but in purusing it , it is very evident that it is not a book writen for vegetarians.

          5 out of 5 stars great cookbook.......2004-03-29

I have been trying to cook using more whole foods and this cookbook is one of the best. It has great recipes and is a good read too. I bought another for my mother and she enjoys it as well. The oat flour pancakes and whole wheat soft pretzels are ones I make all the time. The whole wheat bagels were great. I have tried 2-3 dozen recipes so far and they are all great. I would also recommend "366 delicious ways to cook rice, beans and grains" by Andrea Chesman. I give it 5 stars as well.

          4 out of 5 stars Great, but something's missing..........2003-04-10

I just got this book, looked it over and am really excited about it. Very unique recipes that I haven't seen anywhere. However, I was discouraged in one recipe, "Brown Rice Risotto," because it tells you to "dissolve yeast," but there's no yeast listed in the list of ingredients. I'm assuming I found the only recipe with a problem. All in all, I can't wait to make the recipes!

4 out of 5 stars A good case for living in better health.......2001-09-21

This book has an expansive overview of different grains, their history, some familiar and some less known. Many may not be part of some peoples regular diet, yet this book inspires one to try them and provides good recipes in which to experiment and have fun. Bumgarner makes a great case to expand a readers menus in order to live a more healthy life with natural foods. She shows that solid research and lots of love went into the production of this book. Baking recipes may be difficult for wheat sensitive people.

As the owner of a rescue beagle, I found this book to be incredibly helpful. This book provides a full range of history about this delightful breed of hound. I was able to determine what materials and equipment my hound would need. It is an excellent book for all owners of beagles, from happy pet owners to people interested in showing their hounds. My beagle is a lovable and trusty pet, so I was mainly interested in the parts aimed at pet owners.

A good book and no doubt beagle owners and those who love beagles will enjoy it as well.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall book.......2007-02-27

This book is helpful to any beagle owner. It covers all of the basics and goes into plenty of detail for just about anything you might want to know about your beagle or to consider when thinking about welcoming a beagle into your family. The book does go into quite a bit of detail about breed standards and AKC events and whatnot. Unfortunately if you don't have an AKC registered dog none of this pertains to you. Good intentions abound, but the level of snobbery in the AKC will keep plenty of good dogs (maybe even better *gasp* dogs) from field and agility trials. This isn't a downfall of the book, but if you're like me and have a rescued or adopted beagle, or even one thats just been fixed, much of this book is useless as it pertains to AKC or Nat'l Beagle Club trials and events. I would have liked to see just a little more coverage of training and behavioral issues, but the information overall is pertinant and usefull. Whether you have a registered beagle or not this book is a good tool and packs plenty of bang for the buck.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is Bow-WOW!!!.......2007-02-16

Having grown up with a beagle, I thought I knew this breed, but author Kim Campbell Thornton pleasantly surprised me with new facts and insights into all that is Beagle. Her book covers everything you need from nose to the white tip of the tail. I especially enjoyed the Beagle Bonus pullout boxes. This is a must read for anyone blessed to have a Beagle in their life.

5 out of 5 stars Has made life with a Beagle a positive experience.......2006-06-14

Just had to comment on The Complete Idiot's Guide to Beagles...a couple of years ago I decided that I'd like to have a beagle again...I had one during my teen years...and thought that a little research was in order. I was right and this book covered so many facets of beagle behavior that I realized that I would have to learn to accomodate if I was to have a meaningful realtionship with one of the little darlings. The book gave me a much better idea of what my expectations should be and what kinds of compromises and precautions I would have to make to make beagle ownership a joy and not a trial for both me and the dog.

Both Poochie and I give it five stars!

We have been looking for this book for at least 5 years. We have a jewelry shop that specializes in Navajo, Zuni and Hopi Indian jewelry. This book is the best in showing where different turquoise comes from and how to identify it. We use this reference book as a means to identify turquoise and give our customers information. It is especially important now that turquoise is a very sought after commidity. I highly reccomend this book for it's usefullness at The Biggest Little Shop in Helen.

Prominent art critic Peter Schjeldahl once wrote that "to know the art of Ed Ruscha, you should know something about Los Angeles, and the reverse: knowing something about Ruscha's art will help you with Los Angeles." Today Edward Ruscha is considered a major voice in postwar American painting and one of contemporary art's most significant graphic artists. Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999 presents the entire oeuvre of this innovative artist, whose subject and sensibility are uniquely American. Ruscha began his career as a commercial artist, and the visual language of advertising and his interest in typography as both word and image have exerted a profound influence on his art over the years. He says, "I like the idea of a word becoming a picture, almost leaving its body, then coming back and becoming a word again." His works often depict the interplay between bold letterforms and a more atmospheric background, a visual strategy that has become a Ruscha signature. For example, in Hollywood (1968), Ruscha created a panoramic image of low hills dramatically silhouetted against the blazing heat and hazy sky of a California sunset. The word Hollywood, reminiscent of the famous sign, sits directly on the horizon, angled toward us in capital letters and seemingly emerging from the setting sun itself.

This catalogue raisonné was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, originating at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and traveling to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and other venues through early 2001. Both the catalogue and the exhibition document 40 years of Ruscha's innovative work, and they feature 17 artist's books, such as Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963); a group of photographs taken on the historic Route 66; and some 300 prints, including a fragrant installation made entirely of paper sheets screen-printed with chocolate. Two large, slim, silvery hardback volumes are presented in a handsome black fabric-covered slipcase. Volume 1 illustrates hundreds of prints, books, and other projects with small, numbered images laid out like a series of film cells or words going by on an LED sign. Volume 2 includes entries for each piece and essays about the prints and artist's books, neither of which have ever been discussed in a publication of this scope. --A.C. Smith

a must have book for fans of Ruscha and/or contemporary art/ print collectors/dealers in general. I use this reference material frequently. my one gripe is that many of the reproductions are small and very difficult to see clearly. the two volumes are also a bit confusing. but, certainly a worthwhile addition to my art book collection.

1 out of 5 stars Edward Ruscha: Editins 1959-1999.......2003-10-04

The most disapointing book I have ever bought. I am truly in a state of confusion. Mr. Engberg has made the most self indulgent art cataloug imaginable. The reproductions in this book are not just small, not tiny, but miniscule. The gasoline station photographs are literally one inch squares, while three quarters of each page is left completely blank! Ed Rusha's art work is phenomenal, and I have looked forward with huge anticipation for this book, however, I cannot imagine what was going through Mr. Engberg's mind when he made the reproductions unbelievably tiny. It seems he wanted to get in on the action and made this book with an eye for design. It is true that the each page has a nice design, but the book is, about the artwork of Edward Ruscha, not about you Mr. Engberg!!!
I reiterate the reproductions are so small that one can scarcely see them. This is not an exageration an injustice has been done. Please Siri Engberg reprint the book with consideration for the viewer. Until he does I beg you dear reader to buy any, any other book about Ruscha's art.

This two-volume set about the work of LA artist Edward Ruscha is in itself a work of art. It's a complete catalog of EVERY print, photograph, series and book Ruscha created from the earliest days of his career until the end of the last century. And because Ruscha's work has its roots in graphic design, it translates well to book format. Many catalogs miss the texture or scale of an artist's work, but this one manages to capture the experience of seeing Ruscha's work in person. Add to that numerous interesting essays and more details about the artist and his work than one can ever grasp, and you'll see why I think that... it's a deal. An impressive work about an important contemporary artist.

                                Book Description

Winson Hudson is a civil rights activist in her 80s from the rural, all-black town of Harmony, Mississippi. From voting rights to health care, from school desegregation to Head Start programs, and from equal housing to better roads and utilities, Hudso has fearlessly led her communitys struggle for racial justice in the heart of Ku Klux Klan territory. Her story, presented in her own words with historical background by noted author and civil rights activist Constance Curry, is a testimony to the trmendous challenges that black people faced on a daily basis in the segregated south, and to the remarkable courage that ordinary individuals demonstrated when they sought to enact change on a local level.

5 out of 5 stars Is there a cause for which you would lay down your life?.......2004-06-03

With popular focus on Martin Luther King Thurgood Marshall, and the other "heroes" of the civil rights movement, we tend to ignore the fact that the success of the movement ultimately depended not on these national figures, but on thousands of individuals who decided that freedom was worth laying down their lives and the lives of their children.

Winson Hudson was one of those women. Born in 1916 in the geographic center of Mississippi, she began trying to register to vote in the 1940's, her niece was the one and only Black child who decided to "integrate" the all white school system after Brown, she founded the County chapter of the NAACP, she housed two civil rights workers during Freedom Summer (1964), her uncle was lynched, her sister's house was bombed (several times), and her life was at risk virtually daily for over 20 years.

This remarkable book gives a quick summary (the book is less than 150 pages) of these struggles, and provides a window into the heart of Ms. Hudson (and by analogy the thousands of others like her) which gave her the courage and commitment to stand up to oppression and injustice.

The book closes with Ms. Hudson's question, and challenge: where will young people today find this courage and dedication? Reading about the day to day decisions Ms. Hudson made leads one to examine one's own life. Is there any cause for which you would be willing to risk being beaten and your house bombed; would you send your 1st grader into the face of a howling mob to prove a principle? Most would say no. We need to remember that, but for some very courageous people who said yes to these questions, this country would be a much worse place.

                                4 out of 5 stars A life well lived.......2003-02-28

Winsom Hudson's story about her struggle for racial justice in the cradle of segregated Mississippi is inspiring and riveting. Constance Curry, the highly respected civil rights era author allows Hudson to speak in her own voice and to take center stage. With her sister Dovie as her partner in the struggle, these two African American women defied the racial rules and charted their own half century fight against the Ku Klux Klan, the voting registrar who refused to certify Hudson as literate to vote, and all other obstacles that stood in their paths. Curry edited the book in such a way that Hudson's life becomes a template for the broad scale social change in the deep South. There were countless Winsom and Dovie Hudson's who never sought nor shared the national spotlight. However, it was through women like these that the day to day, incremental change was achieved. If you want to learn more about the lonely battle for equal rights that blacks waged before the 1960's, then Mississippi Harmony is a "must read." Fearless, compassionate, funny, and unrelenting are only a few of the traits that one sees in this extraordinary woman who can teach us a lot about endurance and running the marathon to the finish.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring & fascinating view on the great American struggle.......2003-01-01

Apparently, Senator Trent Lott had never read "Mississippi Harmony," otherwise he would have known what the fuss over his "poorly chosen words" was all about. This book tells us real stories about how the segregationist policies of Strom Thurmond and Jim Crow were more than a set of annoying rules--like "Deliveries and Colored People at the Back Entrance"-that even the senator can easily disparage. The book shows us that segregation is a pernicious smog that chokes the most mundane of human efforts: feeding your family, educating your children and worshipping your God.

For the black community of Harmony, Mississippi, to simply survive these noxious injustices would be an admirable story in itself. However, two courageous residents of that community, Winson and Dovie Hudson are able to rise above and end many of the wrongs. These women are some of the unheralded heroes who literally risked lives, jobs, and homesto fight the national civil-rights effort at a local level. They are the common soldiers in a frightening war. They are survivors with an amazing story.

Though co-written by the famed civil-rights-era author, Constance Curry, "Mississippi Harmony" is told in first person as Winson Hudson talks directly to us. Reading the book was like listening to the best of storytellers.
