Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Now this is an excellent collection. Hulk, the great Claremont/Miller mini-series, and Weapon X. Top marks for putting this one together. A fun cover, and this work is from back in the day when they weren't using Wolverine to sell lunchboxes, undies, and every second series or mini-series that Marvel felt like putting out, so it was a bit more special for that, and for X-Men fans at the time.

What can I say..........2007-07-04

This is it, the birth of the most awesome character in the marvel universe. It is amazing storytelling, great art inside and out, and a very excellent comic. Chris Claremont needs to go and slap the fools that are writing the works for the Wolverine comics today. This is the basis for which all others most follow and some are following it pretty poorly and with out dialog to explain their reasons.

Frank Miller did the Marvel Presents series who for you newbies did the graphic novel for the movie '300', so nuff said.

I LOVE LOVE this series none better to my knowledge. A ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE to enjoy especially if you are new to the Marvel Universe and Wolverine in general. These are the stories that keep players like me in the game. OUTSTANDING!

Great Wolverine Collection.......2007-04-13

The inclusion of the first Miller/Claremont Wolverine TPB and the Barry Windsor-Smith Weapon X series make this worthy of the price. The Miller/Claremont collaboration is seminal and lays the ground work for pretty much all of Wolverine's subsequent adventures in Japan. It's 5 star work.

The Weapon X storyline is good and reveals the epic adamantium bonding process that Logan went through that is mentioned throughout so much of his history and, in particular, the 80s "memory plugs" story line in his regular series. The only bad things I can say about this is I don't think Smith had quite hit his stride as an artist and my expectations for Weapon X were so huge that I couldn't help but be a bit disappointed. Regardless, this is an excellent read.

Also included is Wolverine's first appearance in the Incredible Hulk 181 and a Wolverine solo X-Men adventure excellently drawn by Windsor-Smith, which features Lady Death Strike; I will say this is not the best story featuring Yuriko and it also features a Power Pack member, which is unfortunate, I think they were just trying to segue into the Weapon X story. There's also a Captain America annual which features Wolverine, which is ok, but feels like filler, which is why it loses a star.

Wolverine 101.......2006-12-03

You've heard it over the years how Wolverine is the coolest character in the world. You've seen the Hugh Jackman movies and now you're interested in the original comics that made Wolverine a legend. Well, then look no further than this hardcover volume. All the tales that made him the hottest darling of the comic-reading crowd in the 1980-90s are here.

The book starts off with Wolverine's first appearance in Incredible Hulk #181 (by creator Len Wein). Then we get the justly classic mini-series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. After that we get a classic Wolverine-Captain America tale (that foreshadows a lot of what constitutes the duo's relationship now in "New Avengers" and "Wolverine: Origins") and a Wolverine-Lady Deathstrike tale. Finally, we have the entire "Weapon X" storyline by Barry Windsor-Smith. The book comes with a foreword by Chris Claremont explaining the creation and evolution of Wolverine over the years (with special emphasis on the now legendary car-ride he had with Frank Miller discussing how to revamp the character into a failed-samurai). Also included are all the covers and pin-ups related to the stories.

Simply the Best.......2006-11-05

This one has it all, great art, exciting and well paced stories, nice colors and above all, an exciting and well loved character. Frank Miller and Barry Windsor-Smith delivers some of their best and inspireing drawings ever. And when one think about all of their great accomplishments both past and present, that is saying a lot.
In this great collection, we also get to see the first appearance of Wolverine, in the now classic "Hulk # 181". Good solid drawings by the classic Hulk artist, Herb Trimpe. This volume also contains an action packed story featuring Captain America, drawn by the talented Mike Zeck (Cap. America, The Punisher, Secret Wars etc.).
You can't go wrong with this book. Simply the best.

A lot like "Treason".......2007-03-13

"The Usurper's Crown" tells the story of Ingrid and Avanasy, who are Bridget's parents, and of Medeaon's past. Many of the criticisms I had for "A Sorcerer's Treason" are still valid for this novel, so I will not repeat them here. But once again, despite those flaws, the novel was still an enjoyable read.

I actually found it very interesting getting to know the full details behind the characters we were only briefly introduced to in "Treason". It's one thing to know that Bridget's mother died in childbirth, and that her father gave his life to seal the firebird, but it's another thing to read the tale in its entirety. Readers got to know those heroes that sacrificed their lives for Isavalta. We see how the love formed between Ingrid and Avanasy; we get to know first-hand the kind of man Everett Lederle was; we learn the reasons behind Grace's estranged relationship with her niece; we meet Peshek in his youth. And the part I found the most interesting was reading of Medeaon's broken history.

In "Treason", Medeaon is a hard, vengeful woman who has succumbed to madness. But in "Crown", we see her as a young woman who is afraid of her destiny and beset by treachery. She genuinely loved her husband Kacha and was irrevocably broken by his deceit. Reading about her struggles, her strength, and her intelligence as she tries to regain her kingdom makes her eventual downfall all the more poignant. Readers finally understand why those who remained loyal to Medeaon even throughout "Treason" did so -- despite her flaws, she was a hero in her own time.

One additional issue I had with this book was that Ingrid's role was never really elaborated on. She fell in love with Avanasy and returned with him to Isavalta, which was apparently what one of the spirit powers wanted. But it was never explained why Ingrid was so special to this power. In a sense, she really didn't do anything, but it was repeatedly insisted upon that she was needed. She was a good character in her own right, but fell flat as a heroine. At least with Bridget we understood where her power came from; not so with Ingrid.

Again, many parts could have been better, but it was still a good read.

More Isavaltan magic.......2005-03-12

The second book in Sara Zettle's Isavaltan trilogy is unusual in that it pre-dates the first book. Although that seems strange at first, it actually works really well.
This time the story revolves around Bridget Lederle's parents, again the story moves between Earth and Isavalta, a land of magic and intrigue. To get there Ingrid Loftfield must follow the sorcerer Avanasy across the land of Death and Spirit.
This is a highly enjoyable read that is skilfully written. Sara Zettle is proving as competent a writer of fantasy as she is of sci-fi.

Very enjoyable prequel .......2004-10-04

I was reluctant to read this when I learnt that it was the story of Avanasy and Medeoan... there are things which we already know, but as is revealed, knowing of them and knowing the WHY of them are completely different. The tradgedy is in Medeoans blind love for Kasha and his complete contempt for it.. We learn what can make Medeoan so completely ruthless, and how it happened... Absolutely fascinating and VERY Enjoyable.

Isvalta of the past.......2004-02-08

I must say, that I at first was disappointed, when I learned that this book was a prequel to "A Sorcerer's Treason". Now though I would not have missed it. It is true that you know how things between Avanasy, Ingrid and Medeoan will end, but still this time you get the details and get to know the characters on their own accord.
So I ended up liking the book, it's well written, and I think "The land of death and spirit" are a very interesting mythology.
But I do hope that the last book in the series takes us back to Bridget.

enchanting fantasy.......2003-04-17

When it is discovered that the princess and heir of Isavalta is a sorceress, the emperor and empress ask the powerful sorcerer Avanasy to teach her how to use her powers. Over the years the two become friends until a political marriage is arranged to Kacha, the nephew of the king of Hastinapura. The princess falls in love with him, but Avanasy warns her that he is treacherous and not to be trusted. His charge turns on him sending him into exile.

When the two are wed, she doesn't realize that Kacha is taking over her duties and replacing her loyal supporters with his own people. Only when it is almost too late does she see Kacha for what he is and flees the kingdom, ordering a loyal retainer to find Avanasy and bring him to her at a place she designates. When Avanasy hears her summons, he is posing as a fisherman on Sand Island in Wisconsin. He stands ready to return to his homeland to help the empress defeat her enemies but he brings with him Ingrid Loftfield, the woman he loves, the wife who will sacrifice much to give her husband what he desires.

This novel takes place twenty years before the events in A SORCERER'S TREASON and it is just as good as its sequel. Readers watch the empress grow wiser and stronger, willing to admit she is wrong and take steps to rectify the problems her emotional blindness brought about. Avanasy is a true hero torn between duty and love while the mere mortal Ingrid contains more inner strength than the two sorceresses do. THE USURPER'S CROWN is an enchanting reading experience.

A detailed and richly illustrated tome discussing the finer points of cigar selection and enjoyment. As the title suggests, this is a guide for the connoisseur, not the novice. The perfect gift for anyone urbane enough to let a trash fire burn three inches from the tip of his nose.

This book is packed full of useful information.

Written in an easy-to-read formatt, Jane Resnick creates a lively atmosphere that honors the role of cigars throughout the world.

A Good Work, but is getting dated.......2000-06-27

This is a good reference work for cigar lovers, but it is becoming dated. An update would be appreciated.

Connoisseur's Guide?.......2000-04-18

This is an interesting book with lots of pictures of cigars and how they are made. In fact the information on the process of manufacturing cigars is excellent.

There is one glitch in this publication though. The section on the cigar brands is really not very good. It is a fact that Cuban cigars are notoriously difficult to research but when the brands are listed, with what cigars are made by that brand, this book loses its title of the Connoisseur's Guide. For example, in the listing for Hoyo de Monterrey (Cuban) the list is uncomprehensive and does not list the Epicure No 2 which is one of the brand's signature pieces.

This is an interesting book but it is not a reference (not that it professes to be). The section on Cubans is wholely inadequate but on the other hand, if you live in the US, who cares?

This is a very cute record book for your new puppy. The only problem I see with it is that its got a space for the pup's mom and dad's name and birthplace, and then one for the grandfather and one for the grandmother...when in fact, their should be two sets of grandparents. Its got great photos of dogs of different breeds and crosses on each set of pages.

I recommend using a very fine tip Sharpie to write in it so your comments stand out on the page. The fine tip pen-type sharpies don't bleed through the pages. On a two-page spread (when the book is open) there is either a photograph of a dog on one page, or a place for a picture of your dog, and a lined page for you to write on, opposite of the photo. There are odd pages throughout with different places to put text and photos of your pup's dog friends, etc... but this is the general setup.
There are 6 places to put photos of your dog, so you might want to print them small if you'd like to fit more than one on each page.
I like this record book because it will keep memories and records in an organized, professionally photographed format, which is nice to look at. But I am also going to keep a small photo album of my pup. It seems to be targeted toward pure-bred puppies where you'll know its birthday, parents and grandparents names, etc. but you could use an adopted dog easily by making up his birthday or using the date you got him, and filling in his human parents on his family tree. Be creative.

This is a "puppy book" (similar to a baby book) to record the precious days of puppy youth. This is a wonderful thing to get for a new puppy owner. There are places for a lock of puppy hair, the ad from when you bought your puppy, how many brothers and sisters, first birthday, first holidays, lots of spots for pictures, paw print and so much more. It's full of pretty little water colors too. In addition, you recieve a pretty little gold medal (made of metal) for your puppy. I highly, highly recommend this book. I intend to give one of these with each puppy that we raise when they go to their new home.

Very informative and wonderful pictures. This book has a section of various miniture baskets with great photos and descriptions. Fairly recent with a 2005 publication date. Recommend book for the Fenton Basket collector.

Where do baskets come from?.......2000-03-25

Vaughan's book emphasizes collecting natural materials for basketry, with neat color pictures of appropriate vegetation. The last part of the book explains simple basket-making. Great enthusiasm builder and very useful guide for collecting. If you want more on weaving patterns as well as materials, look at Jensen's book "Baskets from Nature's Bounty."

I recommend this book to all basket weavers........1998-05-02

I have had this book for a few years and I still refer to it for patterns, ideas, tips on techniques and as a reference guide for teaching. It is one of the two books, by Lyn Siler, that I recommend to all of my students. The best basket weaving book available.

This book is a great basket book - good, clear instructions. In general, I would recommend Lyn Siler's "The Basket Book" as a better beginner's basket book. The projects in "Handmade Baskets" are a bit more advanced and unusual which for a non-beginner makes this a great addition to "The Basket Book".

Love This - Very Good Illistration and Photos.......2000-09-12

I bought this book when I was beginning to make baskets. This book is a must for the beginner and the advanced basket maker. It has several diagrams for each of the basket and has at least one color picture for each basket. Ms. Siler even has several photographs of variations of the baskets. I really enjoy this book and feel that it is a wonderful resource for all basket weavers.

An excellent compilation of basket-making projects.......1997-03-18

This book provides plans and directions for 28 baskets in a variety of styles: New England, Southwest, Victorian, etc. The directions are clear and concise with an added section for potential problem areas such as rimming and lashing the basket. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for projects and plans

Inspired Me!.......2000-05-25

This book really inspired me to look in my garden for new things to make baskets with. I was already using pine needles, but now have expanded. Last fall I gathered iris leaves, iris stems, cattails, rushes and honeysuckle. Made a few small baskets, and found it is fun (and cheaper) to gather and prepare your own materials. This year, I am adding dandelion stems, daisy and coreopsis stems, paperwhite and lily leaves, yucca leaves (green and already dried), pine roots...what fun! Some of the plants described in this book are not available in the US, but the myriad of beautiful baskets made from dried bulb leaves alone is enough start my head buzzing with new ideas. Love this book!

Not what I expected........2007-05-12

This book was a dissapointment for me. I don't have an unlimited budget for store design and most of the businesses featured in this book clearly did. There are a few exceptions to this in the book, but if you're a small business looking for ideas to freshen up your store, I would not recommend this book.

Not relavent for most businesses.......2007-02-25

This book is basically just a picture book of expensive stores most of us can't afford to shop in (the ones with 2 pairs of shoes on one entire wall, and 3 items on fancy hangers on the other wall). Most of the displays are designed so specifically around the products so it's difficult to even use the pictures as inspitration for different types of merchandise.

We got much more inspiration from the book "Store Presentation & Design" by Vsiual Reference Publications.

The second volume of Simone Schwarz-Bart's history of black women focuses on black women during slavery in the Americas. As lavishly illustrated as the first volume which focused on ancient African queens, "Heroines of the Slavery Era" profiles the lives of fourteen remarkable African and African-American women who managed to rise above the degradations of slavery to place themselves in the history books for all time. Besides the already familiar figures of Phyllis Wheatley, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Tubman, we also learn about Aqualtune, a Congolese princess enslaved in Brazil; Anastasia, who became the patron saint of Brazil's black people; Solitude, a heroine and martyr of the 1802 slave rebellion on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, and many more. We hear the haunting voices of the slaves themselves and what they endured. The breathtaking illustrations throughout this book are taken from paintings and photographs in the historical archives.
