3 out of 5 stars Paperback version has less stuff, no poetry.......2006-02-14

All or at least almost all of Willeford's previously published poetry is contained in the hardback version of THE SECOND HALF OF THE DOUBLE FEATURE, along with several previously unpublished poems. But none of his poetry is in the paperback version. I'd go with the hardback version.

It is really nice that his poetry has been republished--it would've cost hundreds or possibly thousands of dollars to collect it all just prior to this book's publication.

This also contains most of the short stories and sketches that were previously published in a limited edition volume called EVERYBODY'S METAMORPHOSIS. Plus it contains some previously unpublished short works.

I would not recommend reading this until you are familiar with some of Willeford's great works, for example, COCKFIGHTER, THE BLACK MASS OF BROTHER SPRINGER, THE BURNT ORANGE HERESY, all of which are now fairly easy to acquire now that they have all recently been republished due to a recent surge in people discovering the brilliance of Willeford.

And I probably wouldn't read this until I'd read this incredibly interesting man's two brilliant autobiographies SOMETHING ABOUT A SOLDIER and I WAS LOOKING FOR A STREET.

By then, you will have become a Willeford fan, and after you have become a Willeford fan, or if you already are one, then you will understand why you must read the rest of his work, including THE SECOND HALF OF THE DOUBLE FEATURE.

2 out of 5 stars Can you say "Egomaniac"----?????.......2004-02-07

I bought this book because I read a glowing review of it in our weekly rag. This same weekly often extols the virtues of local bands that I've never heard of and usually never hear of again. It would seem that the reviewer of this book had as much on-track knowledge of good literature as the music reviewers in his shared rag have of what makes a good band. This book is a painful example of an author who apparently was a monument unto himself. The stories in it are boring and, in many cases, written with a pompous air. The ones that aren't, are mostly depressing. I doubt that I will give this author a second chance.

3 out of 5 stars An uneven collection........2003-12-18

As a huge Charles Willeford fan, I try to read everything by the master I can get my hands on. Taken as a whole, this collection of 25 short works does not come up to his usual high standards. Six or 7 of the included works do qualify as compelling reading. An unfinished novel entitled "The First Five in Line..." is vintage Willeford. It has wonderful character sketches and insightfully predicts the current phenomenon of reality TV. Too bad it was never completed. Also among my favorites is "The Man who Loved Ann Landers", a short story consisting of a series of letters by a delusional lumberyard owner to the well known syndicated columnist. It is hilarious and very well crafted. Unfortunately, too many of the other stories miss the mark by lacking sufficient substance to make for a satisfying reading experience. The Kafka inspired "Everybody's Metamorphosis", which is apparently intended to be a satire of literary criticism, comes off as just plain tedious. Exactly the opposite of what one expects from Charles Willeford. The paperback edition contains several typographical errors that are a minor distraction.

5 out of 5 stars Best Willeford collection.......2003-12-03

I got an advance copy of this and it is absolutely brilliant. I've read most of his novels and yet this manages to catch me off guard. It's not strictly a crime collection, even though it is very recognizably the work of this offbeat master. What's most surprising about it is some of the unpublished stuff: it's just as good as the stories that have been printed before (and none of this is easily available). If you like Willeford, this is essential reading. If you're scratching your head wondering who this guy is... Elmore Leonard and Quentin Tarantino seem to love his stuff, and this is a great introduction to his body of work. It's funny, raunchy, eccentric, but it's above all insightful into the motivations and actions of the characters, and his dialogue is brilliant. Definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Willeford.......2003-08-05

I received an advance copy of this collection and if you like Willeford, you're absolutely going to love this selection. It has 25 stories, almost none of which I had read before, and the variety in these stories is -- to put it mildly -- surprising. I wasn't expecting Willeford to write about a male "Tupperware Party", but it makes perfect sense when I read it.

It's laugh-out-loud funny in spots and Willeford's characters are brilliant as always. He has rich dialogue, and the situations are either well plotted or perfectly observed. There's more insightful and wry commentary on male-female relationships here than there is violent crime (though yes, there's that too), and the stuff that was unpublished before is just as good as the rest of it. I can see why Elmore Leonard and Quentin Tarantino love his work -- let's just hope Curtis Hanson makes those Hoke Moseley movies someday soon. Essential reading.

Book Description

"Once upon a time ..." So begin the classic fairy tales that enthralled and terrified us as children. Now, in their third critically acclaimed collection of original fairy tales for adults, World Fantasy Award-winning editors Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling bring us twenty-one new stories by some of the top names in literature today.

Joyce Carol Oates, Gahan Wilson, Gene Wolfe, Tanith Lee, Neil Gaiman -- these are but a few of the accomplished literary sorcerers who have gathered here to remold our timeless myths into more sensuous and disturbing forms. Like the fabled ruby slippers, there is powerful magic here. Rich witches in trendy resorts cast evil spells ... beautiful princesses age and wither in sleeping worlds ... terrible beasts reside beneath flawless skin.

Dark, disturbing, delightful, each story was written expressly for this superb collection of distinctly grown-up fantasy -- a brilliant companion volume to Datlow and Windling's acclaimed anthologies, Snow White, Blood Red and Black Thorn, White Rose.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Unnecessarily cruel.......2004-05-26

I had read the book Black Thorn White rose before picking up this anthology and had a lot of hopes for this book. I love the retelling of fairy tales even with a dark twist to them. However, some of the stories in this book are absolutely horrific. The Match Girl, in my opinion, does not belong in a collection of fantasy but instead perhaps in one of horror. Its been a week since I read this book and I still have a bad taste left from it!

5 out of 5 stars the best, so far.......2004-01-04

I love the whole Windling/Datlow edited series of fairy tale short stories. This particular book is by far the best one I have read (and I've read them all, to date, Jan 2004). Ellen Steiber's "The Fox Wife" is the best short story I've read in awhile - well worth repeated readings, and even led me to seek out more oriental "fox" tales. Joyce Carol Oates, Neil Gaiman, and Jane Yolen are here, and the editors, for this one collection, have abandoned their informal trademark touch of including that one truly odious story. ALL the stories are of high quality, and if you are a devotee of this genre, you MUST read this one. It's really the best of the bunch! Five stars!

4 out of 5 stars Retellings.......2003-04-06

A great short stories of Fairy Tales for adults.Wonderfully intertaning and an enlighting read.

4 out of 5 stars Anthologies are often difficult..........2002-09-18

...but I found this book overall to be good. I particularly liked 'The Match Girl' (and have since found all of Anne Bishops books to be great!), but I disliked a few of the contemporary stories. Grab it if you enjoyed any of the other anthologies, but no, you're not going to like all of the stories!

3 out of 5 stars Not my favorite.......2001-12-08

I didn't like this as much as _Black Thorn, White Rose_ or _Black Heart, Ivory Bones_, but it wasn't bad. Add a couple of stars for the stunning novella "The Fox Wife", set in Japan, and for the lush and horrible "The Beast," the dark tale of a beautiful man who is not what he seems. Subtract a few for a pair of stories I heartily disliked--"The Match Girl" which seemed an endless litany of pain and torture, and "The Masterpiece", which is well-written but will forever haunt me. I can't believe the heroine could have made the choice she did at the end of this take on "Rumplestiltskin." Yes, that's probably the point, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

5 out of 5 stars The BarJulians are having a party..........2005-04-10

The Earth has been quarantined by a race of superintelligent pan-dimensional aliens who deem us too violent/dangerous/weird to be exposed to the rest of the universe. So a dyson sphere(look it up)force shield is put up outside the orbit of Saturn and dragged out of the universe completely. Until we're ready to play with others.

    O well, there's always Mallworld.

A shopping center the size of a planet. Makes the Mall of America seem like a flea market.

A collection of short stories that feature an assortment of characters, many members of the BarJulian family, the richest people in the little universe we have left.

Funny, witty, creative, and still hold up after over 20 years.

    Well worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Somtow Sucharitkul's novels.......2004-10-29

This is a great reprint to pick up! I have lost a number of loaner copies and worn down one of my own copies of Mallworld over the years. While many of the basic thematics are very much of the 1980's (when malls reigned supreme in US culture) the collection of stories in the planet sized mall, dubbed Mallword have a timeless theme.

Where many of Sucharikul's longer works feel haphazard and muddled at times the shorter pieces revolving around this theme are well done and portray a larger picture than they individually convey. There is not a turkey amongst them and Mallworld is not only good, it is also fun.

5 out of 5 stars 30 clicks of Totally Awsome (tzum)........2001-10-20

Mallword stands out to me as Somtow's most memorable early work. The vivid scenes that he paints in these stories are still engraved in my mind long after the images of lesser authors have faded. I will devour this latest version yet again. Spectacle!

By the way... What is so unpronouncable about Sucharitkul? (see author's review)

5 out of 5 stars A fun great crazy book that helped warp me as a child!.......2000-08-22

My father has the first printing of the paperback edition of Mallworld, and I read that book near to tatters over the course of my youth. Although I haven't read the new edition (yet) I'm sure that the addition of new stories and artwork will only elevate this delightful, hilarious book nearer to perfection. I loved it then, I'll buy it now, and I'll read it over and over again. Get it!

Somtow Sucharitkul is both entertaining and insightful...sorta reminds me of Rudy Rucker that way, though Sucharitkul is much darker and weirder than Rucker. His understanding of other cultures is also amazing. This book is very diverse in its references, probably his best book though I have yet to find and read the rest of his novels. I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind who wants to be entertained.

5 out of 5 stars Mallworld a gem amidst obscure sci-fi.......1997-07-29

Anyone who really liked Kevin J. Anderson's STAR WARS "Tales from Jabba's Palace", Alan Dean Foster's "Glory Lane", Spider Robinson's "Callahan's Cross-Time Saloon", or any other collection of bizzare science fiction, aliens, and the fringes of humanity is the perfect audience of Mallworld.

In an ever-more crowded solar system confined by alien overlords, the humans living in the rural Belt as well as urbanites all flock to Mallworld to find EVERYTHING and ANYTHING.
Mallworld is the shopping mall the size of a planet, open 24/7/365, with hordes of spree-shoppers and tourists, aliens and freaks, stair-well kids, mall workers, etc.

The characters and settings are as dark as the Twilight Zone, esoteric as William Gibson, innovative as Philip K Dick and utterly intense.

I loved every story in the book and have read it several times, recommended it to many friends (I have to loan them my copy autographed by the author himself because it is SO hard to find!).
It's a shame this book is out of print and largely unknown because it truly is a gem that needs fresh publicity.

4 out of 5 stars A clever sendup of consumer culture.......1996-11-13

So, you've survived the presidential elections. You know to "Just Don't Do It!" and that Bob Dole is a war hero from World War II. You've learned all about how bad "big government" is. And we've learned about how much we miss the '80s.

Now, this Thai import--occasional avant-garde composer, horror film director, and mildly prolific science-fiction author (http://www.primenet.com/~somtow/)--is here to bring back everything we loved about the 1980s.

Consumer culture. Conspicuous consumption. Noise, music, and decadence. The ultimate Big Government--hyperintelligent aliens watching over the solar system, locking humanity away from the stars, and providing incredible technology. The book describes the Mall of the Future: the size of a planet, and caters to every possible consumer of anything, human and alien alike. A series of smoothly-written, clever short stories, punctuated by advertisements for the wonderful products available in the mall.

Feast your eyes on the Mallworld Vampire, reduced to a sideshow at the Way-Out Suicide Club. Check out the daring youth, who refuse be decently nude like their parents are, and instead wear shapeless, indecent potato sacks. Join the Cult-of-the-Month Club. Try a dose of Levitol, and bounce off the ceiling. Forget that useless literacy, and interact with salesdroids. Live at the very center of solar commerce.

This book, published in 1984, is vaguely out of print. I found it in a used bookstore a few years ago and loved it; it seems that even this site is having some problems with it. The pages are well-leafed, passages are underlined to read to friends.

          Book Description

In The Mafia Cookbook, Joe Dogs took the quintessential Mob formula -- murder, betrayal, food -- and turned it into a bestseller, not surprisingly, since Joe Dogs's mixture of authentic Italian recipes and colorful Mafia anecdotes is as much fun to read as it is to cook from.

Now The Mafia Cookbook is reprinted with Cooking on the Lam -- adding thirty-seven original new recipes and a thrilling account of Dogs's recent years since he testified against the Mob in five major trials, all told in his authentic, inimitable tough-guy style.

The new recipes are simple, quick, and completely foolproof, including such classic dishes as Shrimp Scampi, Tomato Sauce (the Mob mainstay), Chicken Cordon Bleu, Veal Piccata, Marinated Asparagus Wrapped with Prosciutto, Baked Stuffed Clams, Veal Chops Milanese, Sicilian (what else?) Caponata, Gambino-style Fried Chicken, Lobster Thermidor (for when you want to celebrate that big score), and desserts rich enough to melt a loan shark's heart. Readers can follow these recipes and learn to cook Italian anytime, anywhere, even on the lam, even in places where Italian groceries may be hard or impossible to find.

Tested by Mob heavy hitters as well as FBI agents and U.S. marshals, these recipes are simple to follow, full of timesaving shortcuts, and liberally seasoned with Joe Dogs's stories of life inside -- and outside -- the Mob. This is the perfect cookbook for anyone who wants to make the kind of food that Tony Soprano only dreams about.

The stories in this book are hilarious and if you've ever met one of these guys it is even funnier. But that's another story and I only speak metaphorically because I don't want the FBI searching my underwear drawer. Not that there's anything there...

The recipes are relatively easy to prepare. Not all are Italian, but most of the recipes we have tried have been delicious. This will not be on your shelf for being the definitive Italian or Italian American cookbook, The Mafia Cookbook will just remind you of slightly dangerous stories every time you think of the specific dishes. Plus you will learn a thing or two to help you identify the bad boys and separate them from the G-men.

Great Italian-American cookbook! I like the size of it. Very impressive recipes. I often wonder why a great cook like this does not open his own restaurant! With his reputation and great food it would be a win-win situation!

This book is for Italian food lovers as well as Mafia buffs. It is worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining and tasty.......2005-09-28

I was very pleased with this cookbook purchase. I have numerous cookbooks, but this is becoming a favorite already. Yes, it may not be traditional Italian food, but who cares as long as it tastes good. Those that mock adding dry mustard and chicken stock to marinara sauce obviously have not tried this delicious recipe. The Pasta Marinara and the Veal Marsala have received great reviews from those I have served it to. I'm going to purchase a few copies as gifts because people have been requesting the recipes. I'm no chef, but I know what I like. Try the recipes before you decide just how "authentic" they are. I think you'll be pleased with the flavors and how easy they are to prepare. Two thumbs up!

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent & Scary!.......2005-02-26

I loved this book! The recipes are simple and relatively traditional Italian American fair but they are easily adaptable to suit everyone's taste. "Joe Dogs" doesn't use too many ingredients but one can add extra spices and build off the recipes he's mastered. Either way, the book is enthralling and completely entertaining and very vivid. I found myself transported into his world. I love to be transported by a good book and this one does the trick. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but I still have questions.......2006-06-26

I was looking for a book that would help SOLVE my problems with dogs and allergies - this book just gives examples of what to look for (is it or is it not allergies) and suggests seeing the vet. Been there, done that - was looking for more creative ideas than seeing the vet and putting them on steroids (the standard prescription). I will keep looking for something to resolve my dogs' allergies and skin issues

4 out of 5 stars I Refer to This Often.......2005-07-19

I have a dog that has severe allergies and, unfortunately, is one of the 1/3 or less who have not seen significant success with allergy injections (after 2 years...sigh). But, Dr. Messonnier offers many types of therapies/treatments for dog's with skin problems/allergies. His writing is honest and direct--this book made me realize that nothing will completely "cure" the allergies--but can make my dog's life more comfortable. In addition, the author does state that most treatments may not be the "sole" form of treatment--that they have to be used in conjunction with several other treatments. Right now, my pup is trying some homeopathic remedies along with conventional ones. And, I am still trying. This little book is pretty comprehensive. It gives the WHYs along with the HOWs to treat. I disagree with the other reviewet that the author does not talk about treatment. Over half the book is on treatment. Recommended with those who struggle with the irritating and frustrating problem of canine skin allergies.

          2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2004-05-02

While this book is great if you simply want to learn about what allerges are, it does not give advise on how to treat the problem yourself. It will help you to have an informed discussion about the topic with your vet, but if you are wanting to learn how to treat your animal or what suppliments to use, this is not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Allergy Solution for Dogs.......2001-08-09

I write MacAnswers, a question/answer column for Great Scots Magazine, a publication for Scottish Terrier owners. The question I wanted to tackle for the September/October issue was about allergies. However, I was tempted to put that subject on the back burner since entire books can be written on allergies in dogs and how to control them. Fortunately, I found Dr. Messonnier's book The Allergy Solution for Dogs. This new book does indeed provide the solution for dog owners who are willing to invest more time and interest in solving their dog's discomfort than a monthly trip to the vet for a steroid injection. Dr. Messonnier's holistic approach to allergies makes sense, and I highly recommend this book to any dog owner who is dealing with the frustrations of a dog that itches and itches. Breeds the book lists which have an especially high incidence of atopic dermatitis, a genetic disease which predisposes dogs to skin allergies are: West Highland White Terriers, Cairn Terriers, Shar-peis, Scottish Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, Wirehaired Fox Terriers, Dalmatians, Pugs, Irish Setters, Boston Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, English Setters, Labrador Retrievers, Miniature Schnauzers and Belgian Tervurens.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Verneuil.......2007-02-28

This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work.

          5 out of 5 stars Good designs.......2006-11-05

If you are into art nouveau, you will enjoy this Dover book. Again many variations on floral themes.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful artwork, beautiful reproductions.......2006-06-07

I thought the artwork in this book was stunning, and the reproduction quality and colors were lovely. I did have one major problem with the book, two of the main designs on the cover (topmost horizontal design and the center horizontal design) are NOT IN THE BOOK! These are two of the main patterns I planned to use from the book, and now if I want to, I need to get them from the cover, where they are covered by text. I found this to be unacceptable! Please keep this fact in mind if the cover is what won you over.

This book helps me in my work big time. I'm free freelance artist and right now I'm working on my next big project in Art Nouveau style and I can not imagine my work without this book.

Dover Publications is the friend of anyone with nearly any sort of interest (and not much money). If you're interested in the ways and means of New Art, get this one.

          M. Verneuil clearly would have liked the Dover editors. LIke them, he had his wide-ranging interests, in his case in botany, Japanese design, and decorative arts (to judge by his booklist).

This book is a feast that shifts back and forth from stylization and abstraction on one hand to close observation of natural plant forms on the other. One two-page spread (plates 62 & 63) in particular juxtaposes both this reduction into pattern and the accuracy of his eye.

These are the crown imperial and the German iris from Verneuil's Etude de la plante. Side views of each plant give you the random visual complexity of the original -- almost scruffy leaves, in the crown imperial's case. Both set forth the visually overwhelming detail of the blossoms. But, at the bottom of both plates are plan views of a blossom, simple, regular and compelling as a Japanese mon.

If the rest of Verneuil's plant book is this good, I'm hoping Dover reprints the whole thing one day.

When Verneuil moves to greater depths (or is it heights?) of abstraction, the results are often stunning. Don't miss plate 27, an overall pattern of maidenhair fern in shades of orange, or plate 28, a tiled pattern of wild iris in rippling water.

It's interesting to compare the sunflowers in plate 79, apparently a detail from a running line of tiles, with the one in plate 59 from Etude de la plante. The latter captures the petals in wild abandon, the leaves in their rough, almost papery reality. The former flattens and regularizes each leaf, and views the flowers head-on, giving us a literal sunburst of shape and color in complex but regular pattern.

Throughout, M. Verneuil brings a solid color sense, now playing with shades of neighboring hues, now with contrasting hues. Each one seems absolutely right.

You can't open this book to any page without feeling that the mind and eye that originated it were pretty special. It's more than likely that some of this impression is due to the care of Carol Belanger Grafton, who selected and arranged the plates -- many of the two-page spreads seem to delight in comparing, or mirroring, or contrasting Verneuil's designs.

If you like art nouveau, you'll want this book.

I'm not sure how true the colors are to the original designs by Seguy--I have seen different versions--but I love these colors and the cleverness of the patterns. I don't even have to use them, I just love looking at them!

Everything you ever wanted to know about movies, music of the past decade is in this book. White is a brilliant critic and thinker. I attended his music video lecture in Dallas and was astounded at the wealth of information and insight he provided. This book is well worth reading, but Overlook Press ought to put it out in paperback so that more students of music video and movies can afford to have it and underline th e great insights and critiques. White is the best culture critic working in America today.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Brilliant pop criticism by the best critic in America!.......1998-07-06

When I started reading White's controversial reviews in the New York Press I sought out this collection for more of his urbane insights and fearless honesty. This is one of the best books of cultural criticism I've ever read. I've recommended it to my American studies professors and he has already promised to use essays from The Resistance in future classes. (The Schindler's List and Spike Lee and Terence Davies pieces are especially detailed interpretations.) Among my favorties chapters are those devoted to the British singer Morrissey and the devastating critique of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. "Tarantino may know New Wave conventions, but he doesn't understand New Wave convictions," White says and that hits the nail on the head. What a brave, beautifully written book. I recommend it to everyone who cares about modern culture, whether film, music, TV. Everyone should know this book.

Finally! A book on pop culture that's more than a flashy press release stating the obvious--which is what most of today's criticism consists of. Finally, a book filled with intelliegence, sensitivity, careful observation and damnit--PASSION! Armond White is making sense of all the nonsense that's put out there for public consumption. For those not familiar with Armond White's work, be prepared for a shock. Along with some very fine reading; Mr. White writes on figures as challenging and popular as: Michael Jackson, Prince, Steven Spielberg, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Eddie Murphy, Spike Lee, Madonna, Ice Cube, Brian DePalma, Janet Jackson, De La Soul, Morrissey, Metallica, Marky Mark, RuPaul, Dr. Dre, Quentin Tarantino, Fab Five Freedy, Robert Altman and many, many more!
It's not that Mr. White covers these subjects--many of these guys get coverage in such mainstream magazines like Rollling Stone, Spin, Premiere, Etc... But here's what makes Mr. White special--he writes, no he looks past hype and investigates a particular work of art and looks into what makes it special (or not so special). In short, he makes a careful examination of the ideas that these works bring up. Ideas that usually are ignored or glossed over in mainstream pop journalism. In doing this, he exposes the biases inherent in most pop culture reporting and also the segregation in pop journalism.
Subjects covered here include: the appropriation by the mainstream of hip-hop culture, the rise of Black independent and Hollywood filmmakers and the challenge (or lack thereof) their films provide, the deceptive (or is it Death-ceptive?) funkiness of Dr. Dre's music, Increasing visual illiteracy in the watching of movies, Steven Spielberg and why despite his poor crtitical reception--he matters, Understanding Michael Jackson (you'll won't find this ANYWHERE else!), etc...
                            The more you read Mr. White's prose, the more you'll witness for yourself the revelation it is. Take for example this excerpt !from UNDERSTANDING MICHAEL JACKSON;
                            (on MJ's changing physical complexion)

"...only the intimates of Jackson's life have a right to complain--or be surprised--at the physilogical changes he has made of himself. The skin lightening, eye widening, nose sharpening, chin clefting, plus hair weave and processing are mad-scientist variations on the ethnic grooming and image creation that have long been part of the Black performer's understood contract with the white-controlled world of show business. Most artists submit to it to some degree. Jackson's only gone the Jewish entertainer's nose-job ritual--known as the "Hollywood circumsicion"--several organs better..."
See! And that's only on the first page! Check it out!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars An original voice, and a fine critic........1997-02-03

I always love White's writings in the City Sun and Film Comment, and here they all are in one place! He's a real rebel, and his opinions are as shocking at times as Pauline Kael's were in the early 60's, when her voice was new (and an affront to the Bosley Crowthers of the world). Highly recommended

                            Book Description

In The Reckoning, Robinson provides startling insights into prominent Americans' roles in the crime and poverty that grip much of urban America, and rallies black Americans to speak out-and reach back-to ensure that the largely forgotten poor of black America get their chance at the American dream. The Reckoning grew out of Robinson's work with gang members, ex-convicts, and others profoundly scarred by environments of extreme poverty and its unshakable shadow-crime. The Reckoning pays homage to residents of these neighborhoods waging heroic struggles to free their communities from economic blight and social pathology. Robinson calls on black Americans of all ages and classes to join this crucial battle to bring the residents of America's inner cities to safe harbor.

"Randall Robinson is an authentic hero and a true patriot. He loves his country but is unafraid to rebuke or expose its sins. America is indebted to her black people, and Randall makes the case for why we must not and cannot accept a check marked 'insufficient funds.'" (Tavis Smiley, author and host, BET Tonight)

"Randall Robinson is the greatest pro-Africa fighter of his generation in America. His powerful and poignant story of personal and political struggle is one of vision, courage, and sacrifice." (Cornel West, Harvard University professor and author of Race Matters)

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable and no wonder.......2007-03-13

No wonder this guy quit America and left, I plan to do the same. Meanwhile, I do find it odd and suspect that I could not find this book on Amazon by searching the title; in all three pages of search results, this book was not among the list, but "Dead Reckoning" was, despite it's not "'The' Reckoning." It finally came up when I searched Robinson's name. I've never had that problem on this website.

Regardless, this is a stellar book. What Mr. Robinson writes here is reality, despite that those here who gave it one star refuse to either learn that or fess up, fess up meaning they are clearly the problem. It is a must read for anyone who is truly interested in understanding the truth about why this country is spiraling downward in a rapid pace. Our priorities are all wrong, money ranks above everything here, and way above everything. This book is extremely well written, the information and statistics are those we should all be reciting instead of some sports tool's batting average, but obviously people here in this country like living in a police state and living behind the barrel of a gun that's pointing to every other country on the planet as well as at the inner cities.

The fact is, the only industry we haven't farmed out to third world countries yet is the Security industry, it's becoming the fastest growing industry we have, even surpassing pharmaceutical. There's good reason for the fear tactics, it's big business. Prisons alone are becoming a $60 billion dollar industry, detention centers are adding to that goldmine, pretty soon they'll be running out of black and brown folks to build that goldmine and then they'll be after the white folks because the monster is growing and it's hungry, so I wouldn't be so quick to discount what this guy is warning.

Oh, and by the way, I'm one of those European American types, otherwise known as "white" but I read this book as merely human, same as the author.

I was not impressed by Mr. Robinson's analysis. His shock at the level of criminality that exists in any community is shocking to me. Is he pretending to be naive, or, is he truly naive? Why does he pretend NOT to know what was happening in his community. I don't care if he was raised in Richmond or any other small town. I think that he pretends to be naive when he really isn't. I don't like that level of pretentiousness. He also did not do his homework. Kittrell College, where Peewee went to school is not in Henderson but in Kittrell, NC which is very close to Henderson. I also did not like his rambling on about his kids going to a school in the future. Finally, I was very impressed at The Debt, at least he kept to the point of the book. I thought that I would read more of his books because of his very fine articulation of what he sees as the problem and why African American should get reparations, but this book was not very good at all. Try again--Randall.

2 out of 5 stars a continuation of the debt.......2003-11-26

In "The Reckoning", Robinson goes about analyzing exactly what went wrong with the African American race. Yet once again, the blame inevitably falls on "whitey". Most of the book is a regurgitation of its predecessor, claiming that the government should pay reparations to the blacks in the US. Almost no attention is paid tho the faults of the blacks(for example their tendancy to blow money on fancy cars, jewelry, clothing, etc., instead of giving money back to the community).
