Product Description
Two teenage girls, sisters a year apart, are in a terrible auto accident near where they live, a few miles from the Civil War battlefield at Shiloh. Penny, the older sister, is killed outright. Sandy, the younger, is badly injured and not expected to live.
In a coma, Sandy meets people who are oddly dressed and who speak English, but not the English she speaks. Eventually she comes out of the coma, but continues to see and talk with these people--doctors, nurses, soldiers--on their way to a great battle at Shiloh.
As fascinating as these occurrences are, they are associated with Sandy's refusal to accept Penny's death. Only by witnessing the deaths of her Civil War friends is Sandy able to come to terms with the death of her sister and recover her own life.
This fine novel offers a compassionate, even hopeful look at death, loss, and grief.
Customer Reviews:
Civil War Comes Alive.......2003-10-18
This story is pretty loud and alive. I recommend it a lot.
Wrenching........2003-02-12
I read the author's newest, Ghost in the Rainbow, first. It deals with addictions, internal strife, and external failure very well; you begin to feel this woman's suffering. Should be a requirement in any substance abuse program. I was compelled to then read Neighbors. Funny, endearing, and such upbeat characters. Finally I read Shiloh Renewal. I almost didn't because I thought it was a young adult book. Believe me, this is a very mature story. If you ever loved someone and lost them, you've got to read this book. Absolutely wrenching.
Joan Leslie Woodruff's writing is as good as it gets........1999-02-12
Joan Leslie Woodruff deserves to be read. "The Shiloh Renewal" is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Apparently someone decided that because the protagonist is a teenaged girl, the book must mostly appeal to younger readers. However, this 50+ adult man enjoyed it very much. The story looks at the boundaries between life and death, magic and realism, the past and the present. The focus is on healing, but it's not an easy process. A bonus in this particular modern story is that the reader also learns something about the civil war. As the main character recovers from a brain injury, we gain sensitivity about the plight of such people. Give it a try.
Great writing, fascinating characters, gripping story.......1999-02-05
The Shiloh Renewal is a powerful and extraordinary story dealing with sorrow and courage and told with wry humor. Ms. Woodruff writes about Sandy's fascinating journey into the past where she searches for acceptance regarding the untimely death of her sister. This author has once again written a story that not only entertains, but moves the reader's spirit.
An unusual book. Fun to read and surprising........1999-02-03
"Shiloh Renewal" came as a surprise to me after reading Ms Woodruff's first fiction book " Neighbors". Her style, certainly on the leading edge of popular literature, tranports us into the deep south and catapults us into a desire to empathize with the period and the characters. We find ourselves crossing over time lines as we are taken into the reality of a young accident victim. The book is abrupt in its closure, but exceedingly memorable in its content and the author probably intended that the reader would be left somehow wanting more.

Customer Reviews:
Another year, another collection of great fantasy stories.......2005-09-20
For the past five years, editors David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer put together a new Year's Best Fantasy book, and every year it is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I may not agree with all of their choices, but I rarely find a story that I really didn't want to read. This year's 5th edition is no different. There aren't as many stories in it that make me stand up and pay attention, but all of them are quite good, even the ones that I have a bit of a problem with (stand up Joel Lane). Even better is the wide range of sources the editors draw from for their choices. A great number of them came from the book Flights, which I haven't read, so there weren't too many stories that I was already familiar with (though since I am now subscribing to three different short story magazines, some of them have been read before).
Thankfully, some of the regular contributors to these anthologies (Neil Gaiman, Tanith Lee) don't annoy me like they have in the past. Lee's writing has never been my favourite (though I did like her "Moonblind" in last year's book), but "Elvenbrood is a very strong story about a shattered family who is attempting to move on, and the weird things in the woods outside that want the daughter as part of a pact that the father made. Gaiman finally moves on from the "weird character in the story tells a story" motif, though just barely, with "The Problem of Susan." Like "Beyond the River" (discussed below), this is a story of an interviewer visiting an author, though Gaiman's story goes in a different direction and takes a bit more of a horrific turn at the end.
The one story I had a problem with was "Beyond the River," by Joel Lane. A young journalist goes to visit an old children's book writer for an article on her life, as well as the breach of contract charges that have been brought up against her by the company that has bought her books. It seems they want to re-issue them with a lot of changes to make them more "accessible" to the modern reader, which she refuses to do. It's a pointed story about the publishing business, but it has a major misstep that threw me out of the story. It takes a weird turn when the interviewer, a woman, is asked to spend the night at Susanne's house because it's late, and the interviewer starts talking about whether or not the invitation was sexual or a seduction. While this may be a normal first question in a male-female meeting, it's not in a female-female meeting when there has been no hint of sexual tension before that, and there has been no hint that either of the characters are gay. It felt completely out of left field. Plus, the storyline is tremendously heavy-handed in its vilification of the mass-publishing market and how book lines can become mass-produced. The world that Susanne introduces the interviewer to is kind of interesting in a fairy-tale sort of way, but these two things made the story much less enjoyable to read than it should have been.
For me, one of the strongest stories in the book (I'll refrain from mentioning Kage Baker's story here, though it is well worth reading) was "Life in Stone," by Tim Pratt. It's the story of an immortal that wants to die, and the assassin he hires to do it. The immortal hid his soul away hundreds of years ago, and can't die until its container is destroyed. Unfortunately, he can't remember where he hid it. Mr. Zealand, the assassin, is trying to find it, based on obscure clues that Archibald Grace, the immortal, can remember. Usually, this sends Zealand on a dangerous wild goose chase, like at the beginning of the story where he has to fight something straight out of Lovecraft. When Grace's long-lost daughter, Hannah, gets involved, things get even trickier. I loved the tender relationship between Zealand and Grace, especially contrasted with the harsh way that Zealand treats Hannah. The ending is also quite good, with things not quite turning out the way you think they will.
Another real winner was "A Hint of Jasmine," by the ever-reliable Richard Parks. I'm really starting to like his stories, as his current ones in Realms of Fantasy have been quite inspired. This story is a ghost story about past regrets. Eli is a ghost hunter, and he's asked to an old southern mansion by an old classmate and her daughter. Around the end of the Civil War, there was a slave massacre, and the ghosts of the slaves continue to haunt the mansion. However, there is much more to the story, including the story of the two women, then meets the eye. Why was Eli called here, and what do the women really want? This is not a horror story at all, despite being about ghosts. Instead, it's about family and heritage, and the relationship between a woman and her daughter. All of the characters are done beautifully, and the mystery just continues to build until Eli figures out what is going on. The prose is good and Parks has created yet another interesting plot to put them through. Well-recommended.
Year's Best Fantasy 5 is another winning collection of fantasy short stories, with every story offering something to the reader. There are also a lot of famous names in the fantasy field included in this volume, so there should be something for everyone. Unless you have an aversion to short fiction, this is one you have to pick up.

Worlds of Wonder.......2005-07-17
I am only through the first six stories and all I can say is WOW! Usually, I question the selections by some best of anthologies, but Mr. Hartwell and Ms. Cramer hit a home run with their selections. So, far, Robert Reed has taken me to an alternate world where dragons are its dinosaurs; John Kessel has taken me on a Wonka-like ride to the kindest bank in the universe; and, Dale Bailey has taken me to the end of the world with a mixture of sex and booze. Great!

HOOKED UP WITH A FREAK.......2005-03-20
10 years have passed since Alita started on the trail of the mad scientist Desty Nova, hoping to find her "father" Dr. Ido. In order to get some clues she is seeking out the leader of Barjack, a gang of bandits who rule the wasteland under the direction of Den, a giant Godzilla sized mecha. She has help in the form of her Tipharean operator, Lou Collins, a young lady who would be challenged in operating a can opener, much less overseeing our deadly Battle Angel. She's also reunited with Koyomi, last seen as an infant who had been adopted by Alita's friends years ago. She's a tough young girl now, and has come to the desert to meet her idol, Kaos, a rogue radio broadcaster with ties to Barjack, who just happens to see Alita as his long-lost love.
As always, the art in this, the sixth volume of Battle Angel Alita, is miles above most manga. The character of Alita has evolved beyond the infant/naivete and first love and loss. She has also grown out of the beserker fighter stage in which she forgot her problems through battle. In Angel of Chaos, she has come to the realization that she needs to use her powers to make the world a better place, and to help people. The problems I have with the story is the comic relief. I mean would you really put a bumbling klutz, Lou Collins, in charge of your most important agent. And the fact that Lou interacts with Alita through a super deformed hologram image who seems to be out the school of mini-cuteness doesn't help things.
All in all, highly recommended. The Battle Angel Alita series is also being reprinted in the standard manga size at a cheaper price. Also check out Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, a sequel manga series, or more correctly, an alternate retelling of the story.
"And Death hides the angels it makes".......2003-02-19
After the 'miracle' save in the previous volume, Alita is provided with a new operator on Tiphares. This young woman is Lou Collins (a Libra with type AB blood, for what that is worth). She is a bit idealistic, but her personality seems to mesh better with Alita's than the previous dour citizens she has had to deal with. Kishiro introduces a cute gimmick - a super-deformed monitor puppet of Alita on the Tiphares side and a way cool Lou Bike for Alita. This personalizes the relationship, and the reader will fall right into the change.
A sudden attack sends Alita to the southeast after Barjack and Desty Nova. En route, she wanders into another desert fight and rediscovers Fury the cyborg dog and Koyomi from 'Angel of Redemption. [As an aside, this dates the events of this volume at about 10 years after 'Redemption.' Alita was a long time in the rebuilding.] They join up to try to find Kaos, a musician an underground radio operator who only senses radio waves and can read the past of an object.
The finally of this volume is a series of turnabouts which leave the reader (as well as Alita and Lou) wondering which side, if any, is the right side. Certainly, Tiphares, which depends entirely on what can be taken from the surface dwellers, represents what is wrong with any government by an elite. However, the 'rebels' are not clearly delineated as the 'good guys' either. We are forced to question out own standards in a world where Alita, a cyborg, is the closest thing to human. Except, perhaps, Koyomi and Figure Four, but that still has to play out.
When this phase of Alita's story started in the previous volume, it seemed less engaging than the previous story arcs. Much of this has to do with writer Yukito Kishiro's painstaking blending of action story, political statement, and spiritual investigation. This is a difficult combination to balance, but with 'Angel of Chaos', things are well underway again. The stage is set for the approaching climax.
A good volume, but close to falling short!.......2002-01-08
As I learned from Yukito Kishiro's own website, Kishiro was pressed for time to finish "Battle Angel Alita". I think he started to hurry the story somewhere in volume seven, "Angel of Chaos". While it didn't fall short like the motorball volumes, it came close to doing so.
After the bizarre ending of "Angel of Death", Alita leaves her new boyfriend, Figure Four, promising to return. This does cause the reader to wonder whether Figure plays any major role at all in the story and whether "Angel of Death" served any purpose, but luckily it's not too big of a deal. Thankfully, the story does jump right on track with Alita's mission: finding Desty Nova, the man who indirectly killed Doc Ido and promised to rebuild him. We are also reunited with an old friend grown up, and some brand new characters that fit right into the story.
As always, Kishiro's art is top notch and his storytelling is superb, filled with love, hate, betrayal, and interesting plot twists. And, as always, squirmish amounts of blood and gore make this for mature readers only. But while the story is still good, volume seven runs into a few problems with its pacing. Sometimes the story moves too quickly, causing a reader to wonder what just happened. An example would be a man is about to kill someone when a metal dog appears to save her. The metal dog appears seemingly out of nowhere; he just arrives. But the pacing problems are most evident in the ending. I won't spoil it, but I will say it felt a little shorter than it could've been.
But to make up for the pacing problem is something rarely seen in the previous "Battle Angel Alita" volumes: humor. One of the new characters, Lou Collins, is a reinarnation of Shumira from volumes three, four, and five, but she is a lot more funny and interesting. We also get to see something else rarely found in "Battle Angel": chibi-Alita. I won't give anything away, but I will say it adds a lot to the humor already found in this volume.
All in all, "Angel of Chaos" does still manage to stay on the same level with the "good" volumes. Its pacing problems might frustrate some people, but the majority of readers will ignore then in favor of concentrating on Kishiro's beautiful story.

IT'S THE BEST I'VE EVER READ.. NOT AN OLD FASHION COMIC..
IT TALKS ABOUT LIFE, DEATH, KILLING, CRYING.. AND OUR INNER THOUGHTS.. LOVE, HATE...
GOTTA READ IT AT LEAST 50 TIMES!!
Trial by Fire.......1998-10-19
Strengthened with a new purpose and her love for Figure Four, Alita must first satisfy the wants of her masters before she can "take control of the rudder of her life." She is called upon to arrest the man who was responsible for her father's death, but to do so, she must go through the strongest brigand band in the badlands, the Barjack. On the way, she meets Koyomi, a face from the past, now with a story of her own, and a reinforcement to the thought that she can no longer just live for herself. Alita also meets Kaos, an extraordinary man with hopes too bright and clean to exist in this world. Kaos helplessly falls in love with Alita's strength and hardened virtue. Den, the leader of the Barjack, embodies all the wounds and anger that Alita has felt, and when she faces him, it is a true battle in every sense of the word

This is one of my favorite books on entertaining. I love all of Martha's stuff and this one is one of my favorites. Anyone considering entertaining on any scale should pick this up and read it!!
Terrific book filled with "good things"!.......2004-03-17
In spite of Martha Stewart's recent troubles, her legacy continues with this splendid book. It is fresh, intelligent and packed full of great tips and ideas for the entertainer who wants to make a splash without spending a fortune. The thing I like about Martha Stewart's approach is her emphasis on simple abundance--the notion that you can achieve good results through creativity and ingenuity. I think those who want to criticize Ms. Stewart should consider how many people she has inspired through this approach to good living!

Book Description
This uplifting book shows how the field of Animal Assisted Therapy is having remarkable success training animals to help and enhance the lives of children and adults with serious medical problems. Hospital rehabilitation programs, physical and occupational therapy sessions, nursing homes, mental healthcare facilities, and hospice programs are some of the settings where dogs, cats, horses, and other animals have helped patients cope with often daunting medical challenges.
In this profusely illustrated book are many compelling stories about the healing animal-human partnership, including six-year-old Brendan, disabled from birth, who successfully completes his physical therapy with the help of Zorro, a big black hound once considered unadoptable; Philip, in his last days, who finds some joy in the company of a therapy dog named Andy; and Tikva, a Keeshond therapy dog from Oregon that helps to comfort emotionally drained firefighters, and other rescue workers at New York City's Ground Zero.
For animal lovers, healthcare providers, and anyone who appreciates how animals and humans interrelate, this is a wonderful, truly inspirational book.

Good, happy, uplifting book.......2006-08-26
This is an easy read, very sweet and can definitely put a smile on your face and at the same time a tear in your eye. Animal lovers will definitely love it!
Heartwarming tales : NICE WORK!!!.......2005-09-23
This is a heartwarming book, the stories are told with great compassion and it is nice to hear about all the postive outcomes. The pictures add to the joy in the tales...or I could say, it is nice to see such joy with those wagging tails. As a social worker and partner with a therapy dog, this book helped me believe in my mission to do the same kind of work. WELL DONE!

Therapy Pets: The Animal-Human Healing Partnership,.......2005-09-19
Therapy Pets: The Animal-Human Healing Partnership,
She provides many examples of how animals are emotionally good for us as well as physiologically (they help to lower our blood pressure, cholesterol, lessen feelings of physical pain, decrease feelings of social anxiety, etc.).
This is a respectful, intelligent book about a bond that many of us feel, but few of us understand.
I WAS ESPECIALLY TOUCHED BY THE STORY OF A ROTTWEILER NAMED 'TIMMY' & AND THE BOND HE FORMED WITH A PATIENT NAMED SCOOTER, IT BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES !!!
You only hear BAD stories about these animals ! You never hear about such stories as it was a Rotty That worked / volunteered the longest hours & Saved more lives then any other DOG's at the Oklahoma City bombing...
I trully believe there are NO 'bad' dogs - Just BAD Owners !!!!
This is also a fantastic book if you like to read heartwarming stories about some amazing animals!
This book is scientific and gives the evidence that proves the healing power of pets. It is not speculation, fiction or theory IT IS FACTUAL INSTANCES !
The appendix includes a state-by-state listing of AAT organizations and a chapter on how to get your pet started in the field.
If you're someone who enjoys curling up with your pets, get ready for a heartwarming read.
The authors also provide true-life stories of pets enhancing the lives of their owners often in miraculous ways that science does not understand in spite of gathering high statistical relationships between health and owners. This well-written book is clearly for pet lovers who know inside their hearts the meaning of "harnessing the amazing ability of pets to make and keep people healthy ".

A Clear, Beautifully Told Collection of Pet Therapy Stories.......2003-07-21
Jacqueline Crawford and Karen Pomerinke have truly found words to express both the realistic descriptions and the emotional experiences involved in pet therapy. They have hit on so many of the miraculous benefits of this activity, demonstrating how the joy of participation goes both ways - to the recipient as well as to the donor. The book is well organized and documented with many descriptive photographs. It covers the surprisingly wide range of species involved in theraputic activities, proving that the animal-human bond extends beyond the canines, and therefore enlightning its importance. This book is a "must" for everyone involved in the healing professions.
"Pawsitively" Therapuetic Reading.......2003-07-18
I purchased this book because I have seen first hand the miracle of pets as therapeutic healers. My daughter gained much confidence about her Cerebral Palsy during Therapeutic Horseback Riding, eventually enough to own the most wonderful "therapist" named Penny. Their connection was so strong that Penny took great care of Ashley while on their "venting rides", where Ashley told her the most special of thoughts.
I am also a member of the Visiting Pet Program and the bond between our volunteers and their animals and what they hope to accomplish at every visit is extraordinary. Molly is a very special animal, a breed of her own, a "Gaffneyhound" who brings love and smiles to all she visits.
Our VPP group is proud of Molly and Lee, and you will enjoy the "tails" in this book about all of the special animals and their humans.

Customer Reviews:
Too many errors to be trusted.......2002-07-11
I own quite a few Corvette books and have a modest working knowledge of Corvettes and Corvette history. This book was disappointing because it contains errors. Some of the photograph captions referred to a particular year Corvette, but the picture shown was not the correct year. I also found multiple errors in the text, which makes me doubt the accuracy of the data that I do not personally know. I suggest that the Black Book is a better, more accurate, reference. If you want a coffee table book with Corvette pictures, this might do. If you want an authoratative reference work, this is not the one to own.
Good reference.......2002-03-01
I thought this was a great fact-filled book that provides excellent information to help with option avilability and year identification. There are even photos of rare factory modified Corvettes, too. I also thought the photos from Jerry Heasley and Nicky Wright were good. Tops on my list!
Very, very poor !!!.......2002-02-16
This is one of the poorest Vette-Books I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them). The photos are most in very poor quality and partially somewhat like the 3rd copy of a bad scan.
The comments are incorrect and do not always correspond to the pics they describe. The facts are partally incorrect too. Most photos do not show original cars but customized Vettes, without remarking that fact.
The book is a very sad and bad copy of the original Corvette Black Book. Some colored Photos don't make a good book. It is obvious, that the author doesn't seriously refer to the Corvette at all.
My advise: Don't even think of buying this book!

Book Description
The theme of this Festschrift dedicated to Heiko Oberman is Augustine reception in theology (1300-1650). Contemporary discussions about an Augustinian school prior to Luther and about Luther's possible relation to such have been intensified by the work of Heiko Oberman. Thirteen invited scholars produced new work. William Courtenay wrote on late medieval discussions of psychic states and human motivations and volitions; Christoph Burger on Hugolin of Orvieto; Tarald Rasmussen on Jacob Perez of Valencia; Manfred Schulze on Johannes von Staupitz; Bernard Hamm on Jerome reception in Nuremberg; Scott Hendrix on Luther's loyalties; Kurt-Victor Selge on Luther's ecclesiology; M.A. Screech on Augustine reception in Rabelais; David Steinmetz on Rom. 7; Arthur Olsen on Martin Chemnitz; James Tanis on Abraham van der Heyden; Suse Rau and Elsie Vezey compiled the Heiko Augustine Oberman Bibliography. Essays are published in their original English or German; English summaries are provided for the German entries. The general student of the period (1300-1650) should gain an overview of the appropriation of Augustine during that time and Professor Oberman's colleagues should profit from the new research contained herein.
Book Description
A powerfully influential artist, who has been designated both the principal member of the New York Correspondence School and founder of Mail Art as a whole, Ray Johnson discovered in Black Mountain College the perfect environment in which to nourish his distinctive creativity. His work after his departure extends the exploration of freedom championed by the school perhaps as far as any other student at Black Mountain College.

Book Description
With exclusive interviews from NBA executives, players, and coaches, One Last Shot gives fans the inside scoop on basketball's greatest legend-Michael Jordan. After following Jordan's every move for fifteen years, sports writer Mitchell Krugel gives us a fascinating, no-holds barred biography and explains why the man who left the game as the "Greatest Player of All Time" would risk his unparalleled status to play again. Meticulously researched, Krugel's book analyzes both the man and the legend to trace how the First Coming led to a Second and to a Third, and he chronicles the season that defines Michael Jordan as a man who will forever be playing for one last shot.

one last shot .......2007-05-24
This book One Last Shot was a good book.It wasn't the best book writen about Jordan but,it had its good points. The book I think tells it good detail most of the time. The book at points made me want to drop the book and stop reading because it didn't tell me anything I didn't know already. At other times it made me not want to put it down because it retells the games that went on.Overall this book ok not the best but it's a good book if you havn't already read a book and Jordan.
I really did go to school with this guy. Really........2006-08-27
I was writing stories before MJ was shooting hoops. I was published before he warmed the bench at Laney High School. I've scored more rejection letters than he has points in a game, and in fact I got another one last week. MJ, my classmate, you in my house now!
What? He wasn't involved with this book? Damn.
I really don't have any interest in the NBA. I admire some of the players who've played over the years, I always enjoy reading a well-written bio about an interesting person, I marvel that we (myself included) idolize some celebs the way we do, I'll drop just about anything to watch an MJ highlight reel, and one reason I was cheering him on during his 21st century comeback was that we were both born in 1963.
So what about the book? Well, first I wanted to establish that I'm not a sports nut, unless we're talking about the NFL. That means that, if you don't care about the NBA either, my book review might be of interest. Now let's read.
Well, I read two of its thirteen chapters, 40 of its 300 pages. I guess you do have to be a basketball fan to enjoy it. Very knowledgeable author, but just not what I want to read. Oh well. I still love Michael.
NOT GOOD AT ALL, no real inside sources, copy paste effort........2006-08-25
This book is just bad, little inside info on what was going on, bar a few quotes that are hardly "inside info". The book has little organization, going over the same things again and again, and worst of all, reads like a perpetual box score, which face it, you could have got yourself from a newspaper backlog.
This doesnt come close to "JORDAN RULES" by sam smith, which is a shame, as it could have given us a much more clear picture of the "3rd coming"
Very very disappointing book.......2005-02-07
This book looks like the author took some newspaper and magazine clips from others and cobbled them together in a sloppily written book devoid of insight. He has nothing of value here. And it's particularly disappointing that he would try writing a book about Jordan's comeback in Washington when it's obvious he spent little time, if any, traveling with the team during Jordan's Washington days. This book reeks of a clip-and-paste job. Don't waste your money.
Successes, failures, and questions answered.......2004-11-17
Like thousands if not millions of other people around the globe, Michael Jordan is easily my favorite athlete of all time - nobody else is even in the same galaxy. When I started watching NBA games on television, it was Michael Jordan's game that I found I enjoyed watching the most. These days, nearly two years after his final retirement, I'm like I'll always be until I die: I'm such a Michael Jordan fan that I have several of his highlight videos, videos of taped games, and a few books that are about him. I'm such a big fan that a few of my friends and family members have asked me, "Is Michael Jordan your role model?" Well no, I don't really have a role model but there would certainly be nothing wrong with that if he was. I just LOVE watching him play the game of basketball and I enjoy reading what others have to say about him. Oh yeah, and I don't hesitate to tell and show people that Michael Jordan answered one of my e-mails on his official site!
One Last Shot - The Story of Michael Jordan's Comeback is very satisfying for the latter. As mad as I was that he called it quits in 1998 and as thrilled as I was to see him make yet another comback in 2001 at age 38, I always asked, "Why?" Why, after having 9 out of 10 say he's the greatest player the game has ever seen and about a year after being named the greatest athlete of all time in ANY sport by ESPN's Sportscentury, would he return as an old man (by NBA standards) to risk his legacy by not even making the playoffs, missing dunks, and not even being named to any All-NBA teams?
The author of One Last Shot, Mitchell Krugel, really has done his homework. Jordan quotes are scattered throughout the entire book like leaves that descend from trees in the fall; you'll read about why MJ ultimately decided to come back for the "third coming", hear details about his wife filing for divorce at the worst possible moment, read about Michael's executive life with the Wizards, and probably best of all, read and learn about how close he came to doing the unthinkable: furthuring his legend, and how it didn't quite happen.
If you followed Jordan's latest comeback via watching games on television and listening to a lot of ESPN and other sports shows, you'll find yourself remembering and nodding in agreement to A LOT of what you'll read in One Last Shot. I know I certainly recall being one of those people that were sitting on the edge of my seat as MJ received the pass in the 2002 All-Star Game en route to a ......MISSED dunk, but did you know that this game brought Ali and Frazier back together for the first time since the Thrilla in Manila? Do you remember when several sports anchors were predicting the Wizards just may be the team to beat in the Eastern Conference? How many game-winning shots did he have? What did Michael Jordan do that he hadn't done since the '92 season? Who all was invited to the scrimmage games leading up to this final comeback, and who didn't ever show up??
Even with all you know from watching and reading about MJ's latest comeback, you'll get even more detailed insight to things that happened that you would've never known before. When you're done enjoying your reading and learning of the ups and downs of the greatest player of all time's final comeback, you're treated to an "Aferword" that's all about the 2002-2003 (final) season of his career. And if that wasn't enough, the "Appendix" consists of a game-by-game analysis of the 2001-2002 season. It tells the day the game was played, where, what the final score was, and has two sections: The Game Story and On This Date In MJ History. Awesome!
Learning all the more about MJ's comeback isn't all that's good in One Last Shot. The author is obviously a good writer - he writes in a way that keeps you interested from beginning to finish, and he has a sense of humor along with seeming to choose just the right statistics and quotes to include most of the time. There are even eight pages of photographs with captions included. The only thing I didn't like about reading One Last Shot is that at (many) times it seems disorganized. The author tends to jump around a bit. You'll read about a game mid-ways into the 2001-2002 season and then be transported back to a long memory of the Chicago Bulls seasons or back to the beginning of the Wizards season. That's not TOO offsetting, but I didn't particularly like having to reread certain parts to find out what part of MJ's career it's talking about now.
But I won't mind rereading the entire book in the future at all. One Last Shot is a liftime keeper for any major Michael Jordan fan or even for a casual fan that's interested in learning why he made this latest comeback. It has more to do with ego and how he was thrusted out of Chicago before he wanted to be than you would ever think.
Scroll to the top of this page and check out the price. With what you get (8 pages of photos, 320 pages, and game-by-game analysis), it makes me wonder why this wasn't a New York Times Bestseller and why it doesn't have at least 50 reviews up already.
