Maugham's work has certainly become a part of millions of his fans today. To judge by his short story masterpieces, it was in the tiny crevasses and pinched corners of humanity that Maugham illuminated those elemental qualities that were to fascinate him all his life. In fact, the concept of a "normal" person never entered his mind. He claimed such people simply didn't exist.
Selections in Volume 3:
Rain, perhaps Maugham's most famous story, follows the efforts of a missionary who tries to reform a wayward woman.
The Luncheon describes the hilarious meeting of an impoverished writer and a friend with an appetite.
Episode is an odd story of what happens when love finally gives out.
The Poet is about a man who, in the midst of breathless anticipation, finally gets to meet the most famous poet in Spain.
A Man with a Conscience tells a convict's story of murder and his lack of remorse.
The Kite is the humorous story of what happens when a woman comes between her man and his passion.
The Back of Beyond explores the volcanic emotions that are aroused when a love that is taken for granted is proven false. Listen to more selections in The Short Stories of William Somerset Maugham Volumes I and II. © and (P)2004 Audio Connoisseur

Book Description
Kirith Kirin is like no other fantasy that you have ever read. Jim Grimsley has created a fantasy that could have come right from our world where power and greed can tempt, and sometimes conquer, even the most rightist person and where knowing who your friends and enemies are can be very difficult if not impossible. Yet it is not our world. For in Kirith Kirin's world magic is real, immortals walk the land, and people are sometimes the playthings for the dark arts. The Blue Queen, upon resuming the throne while King Kirith Kirin's eternality is renewed in the Arthen forest, has partnered with a magician of the dark arts. No longer does she need to leave the throne to renew her eternal nature. Swayed by promises of the dark magician, she has claimed the throne forever and is extending her influence to the far corners of the world. Malleable grey clouds, sidewinding wind, and intelligent lightning bolts made the trip across the vast Girdle nearly impossible. Out of nowhere, the Blue Queen's Patrols made haste to kill the boy and the warrior before they could safely reach the deep forest of Arthen. Riding upon two magnificent stallions, one a royal Prince out of Queen Mnemarra, Jessex and his uncle Sivisal reached Arthen despite a deadly storm that reeked of magic. Thus begins Jessex's new life as he enters Arthen and moves into the royal court of Kirith Kirin.

Please try this again, Mr. Grimsley.......2007-02-04
Hey, can authors rewrite their own books? Of course they can! I think Jim Grimsley needs to redo this one. Kirith Kirin is actually kind of a prequel to his new science fiction books, The Ordinary and The Last Green Tree.
His writing in the two new books is crisp, elegant, and has wonderful descriptions. Some of this is present in Kirith Kirin, also, but the plot is just...plodding. Very strange, with periods of extreme drama, interspersed with long, slow interludes...I really enjoyed the rich descriptions of the land and people in the beginning of the book, but I was VERY distracted by Mr. Grimsley's use of an invented language, later on. Every other word was in this faux-language, and I could not keep the names and terms straight.
Yes, there are several appendices at the end--but when i read, I prefer not to break the narrative stream every other page by referring to them.
The curious thing about Kirith Kirin is that it is mentioned--as a book!--in the Ordinary. One of the characters is reading it--and she can't understand it either!!
Now that fantasy writers are freeing themselves from the Tolkienesque idea of many races, fake languages, and complex geography and linguistics, I think that Mr. G ought to write it again. amazon lists the publication date as 2000, but it seems much older.
The new books move along much more briskly. His publishers can easily market the new "Kirith Kirin" as a "long lost prequel".
slow.......2006-05-23
If only action packed sword and sorcery fantasy novels are to your taste you should carefully avoid the trouble to look for this out of print book which I happened to purchase for a rather outrageous price.
It is extremely slow paced, with longish descriptions of magic theory and magical duels and little action. We find here the coming of age story of young Jessex (the real main character), an anonimous adolescent peasant boy drawn into a civil war he hardly understands by a dim premonition of a long lived priest.
As it is always the case in any fantasy novel, Jessex turns out to be far more important than everybody expects.
He falls in love with his liege, gorgeous and long lived prince Kirith Kirin, learns magic and finally save his beloved, his kingdom and prevents an apocalypse.
Sensitive readers should not get alarmed: sex is mentioned but never graphically; Jessex is very young but his love for the centuries old prince is authentic and mature, a little more than it is to be believed of a teenager.
Mr Grimsley seems to be interested in creating a strange, melancholic, sensuos atmosphere; a world full of wrecked ghost cities populated by evanescent wraiths. The characters seem to partake in this misty setting, they seem to live a half life made much more by different shades of gray than by crude black and white. Even the main villain, though despicable, is only half alive. Much attention is given to the landscape instead: we get many (perhaps even too many) details and the land of Arthen seems to be the only character really alive.
The writing being fine I only feel like complaining about the overabundance of invented words: it looks like an alltoo easy device to create an exotic setting; we are given a full glossary at the end of the book, together with some appendices regarding various aspects of this fictitious world, but why hinder the reader with strange sounding names when a well chosen common word could have served just as well is something I have not come to explain.
At any rate this novel is beautiful and should not be out of print.
Nice fantasy but plodding.......2004-08-19
Kirith Krirn
Jim Grimsley
This is a fantasy story concerning a young boy who will become the next Wizard of the northern kingdoms. The Prince to be King will fall in love with him and they will have adventures. The plot moves slowly with attention to many details that are not obviously connected to the story line. Unlike Robert Jordan, however, Grimsley does not overdo the language and culture. Much there is here to link to history and culture. Also there aren't monsters and a brace of enemies. There is one Drugaen Keefax with whom Jessex struggles. One apparent thing missing with Drugaen is why he turned to shadow. Also why did Queen Arthryn allow him to bring shadow into the southern kingdom?
a very good read.......2004-07-20
first off ide like to say i was torn between 4 and five stars i chose four for reasons i will go into the story overall is amazing its rich world and the charecters are people you care about the few problems i had with the book are when jessex learns about magic its very over done and over writen going into details that fill your brain and takes you away from the overall story if you like that kind of thing then its not an isue second the names for people places and things my god there very complicated the words are made up and trying to pronouce them in your mind as you read is a trick of magic in and of itself though to the writers benifit in the back of the book there is a kind of dictionary that tells you how they should sound i found myself going to the back of the book to see how a word should be sounded out the love story between jessex and kirith kirin the king who is deposed in the arthen forest is very tender and romantic if your looking for twadry sex scenes there not in this book there done tastefuly with just a bit of detail yes jessex is only 15 but in the back of the book it states that a year on this world is longer than a year on earth and he spends much time in another demension learning magic where he doesnt age where he spends moths and months and is put back in time at the moment he leaft based on that is he much older than 15 so i didnt have a problem with his age like some readers did haveing done the math in my head guessing his true age at around 18 i was very pleased to find the actual story to be so absorbing to find a book that has gay main charecters writen as if its the most natural thing in the world to be able to be a man and love a man the story covers much ground from the kings imrisonment in the arthen forest to the final battle as for the final battle i found it anti climactic allmost liek huh that is it and the final chapter (afterword) left me feeling sad wich for me is something i dont like ot feel at the end of a book im a sucker for happy endings i recomend this book for anyone who loves a true fantasy with magic and knights it incorperates all that i found myself thinking of token(the lord of the rings) when reading it i think its a great book for gay readers and open minded straight people as well i will most ikely re read this book again at some point when my memory of the sad ending has left me i recomend this book highly
Not a book for me.......2004-07-01
I look at the ratings and see 4 and 5 stars so I read the book.
In the beginning of the book Jessex was an interesting character. He learns magic, and discovers he is really talented but then he falls in love with Kirith Kirin and oh by the way who is a man! I stopped reading this book right after their love scene at 1/4 of the book. This is not a book for me or anybody else who has similar disinterests.

Not bad--but I had a few problems with it........2006-11-10
I was surprised when I started reading this to see such an inclusion of Christianity in it--that is something that is alien in Star Trek. Wrapping my mind around that this is sort of a Man in the Iron mask tale. A man is about to become king, but is prevented from doing so by his previously unknown twin brother--twins are thought of as a birth defect on this planet--among other things.
Deanna is the central figure in this novel--which works well in the end, but at first she was absurdly whiney, never having enough time for herself, failing miserably, not able to take her hot bubble bath. Once she was on a mission and seemed to remember she was a starfleet officer she was much more enjoyable to read.
I did feel uncomfortable with so much religion in this, while spirituality has never been banished from Star Trek, earth religions seemed to have been ignored in favor of alien metaphors, and perhaps there was a way to do this in this novel so there could be more of a consistency with the Trek universe. Another minor quibble I had was everyone's ability to speak english in a hostage situation where they had no universal translator....(they had no communicators and were in their pjs, its hard to argue that someone had one).
Scott did do a very good job of layer all of her plots and subplots though. This wasn't a painful read and was pretty thought provoking at times, but I won't rank it as my absolute favorite.
Excellent story, well told........2004-11-13
This story focusses on Deanna Troi, telepathy, and religious beliefs. It is well-crafted, thoughtful, and interesting, with interesting characters and a viable plot. There isn't much action, although there is some, and there certainly is plenty of drama. An exceptionally good story, almost if not quite up to the five star level.
STNG #27 Guises of the Mind A very well done numbered novel.......2003-09-26
This numbered Star Trek The Next Generation title is but the only title from this outstanding author that added so well to the genre. This is somewhat sad as I found her writing style to be quite good and it would be very interesting to see her revisit the genre in any one of its many variants.
The cover art for "Guises of the Mind" is somewhat standard fare for the period in which it was released.
The premise:
Inspired by a quote from Sarek of Vulcan entailing mastery over emotions thus gaining peace through embracing the many guises of the mind, this author sets off to tell a different but extraordinarily intriguing STNG tale.
Capulon IV is a planet that has been waiting for several years to petition for membership in the Federation and they're finally ready. In order to gain this membership the planets' new ruler must go through coronation and the signing of the final treaty. The Enterprise is dispatched to Capulon IV with a group of women from a religious order dedicated to helping the downtrodden. This group expects to be welcomed with open arms but they instead find deceit and treachery and the crown prince now refusing to join the Federation.
Captain Picard, Troi and Mother Veronica, the abbess of the nuns beam down to the planet in an attempt to determine the problem and work it out with crown prince. They're soon drugged and captured though. Captain Picard must now find a way to escape and stop the crown prince from being crowned as they soon learn that he will not only stop his planet from joining the Federation but he also intends to destroy the Enterprise.
What follows from there is one of the most intriguing STNG novels to date that explores areas of Gene Roddenberry's universe that are rarely visited but is done quite refreshingly in this novel.
I highly recommend this earlier Star Trek The Next Generation novel as it will make an excellent addition to your Star Trek library. {ssintrepid}
An excellent, charachter accurate, TNG novel.......2003-08-15
I was very plesantly surprised when I read this book. I've read more than my share of badly written TNG novels lately, and picked up this one from the library with a bit of trepidation, wondering if there were no more TNG books worth the time to read them. Fourtunatly, this was an excellent book.
Dianna Troi is well portraied, and her empathic talents are streched to the limit in this mission. This book also has religion as a central theme for a change. As someone who is facinated by the study of various religions I found this to be a refreshing change, however I would have liked to see something a little less centered on catholicism and/or christianity. The religion of the people on the planet is also very similar to catholicism.
The Enterprise is on a mission to take two members of the religious order "The Little Mothers" to a planet who has requested thier assistance and Picard is on a mission to bring a treaty to the planet for entrance into the Federation as the monarch heir is being corinated as the supreme leader of the planet. The Little Mothers care for orphans and unwanted children no matter what thier physical or mental condition. Thier being sent on this mission turns out to be an unexpected godsend for one of the little mothers who comes to term with a gift which she has always seen as a curse.
However, there is something devious happening there which you should discover by reading on your own. This is a well written, enchanting story which is a great addition to the trek world.
ST-TNG: Guises of the Mind.......2003-06-30
Star Trek - The Next Generation: Guises of the Mind written by Rebecca Neason is an excellent change-of-pace novel where the isn't much action-adventure but there is a high quotient of intrigue making for an enjoyabe read. This book delves into some religion but it's only superficial. The main theme of this book is about the Crown Prince being kidnapped by his lost twin brother usurping to the planetary thrown of absolute.
There are two plots in this book the main plot is where Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Deanna Troi, and a nun Mother Veronica beam to the surface of Capulon IV to start final preparations to signing a treaty with the planet and the UFP. Also, to set-up the necessary facilities for the order of nuns to help the downtrodden and the young children. The second plot is where Data is trying to find his spiritual self as he asks his crew members for their spiritual beliefs as he trys to reconcile his existence.
There are plenty of plot twists and turns throughout the book to keep the reader's interest as this book is mainly written with Deanna Troi in mind and also Mother Veronica as they try to find out what is happening. Mother Veronica is telepathic and Deanna is trying to help the Mother to cope with her ability through Betazed techniques. As these two sense treachery and quile in the Prince they also sense a duality and try to get to the bottom of it.
I found this book to be an excellent change-of-pace to the norm of the TREK universe where the main characters are seeking truth and enlightenment to some pretty heavy questions. It is dealt with in an understandable mannor and the story doesn't stall but moves on. The intrigue level is high in the book as the Enterprise crew works to solve problems not generally dealt with in TREK.
This is a solid 5 star book but remember there is not a lot of action-adventure, but nonetheless, it is a very interesting story.

tired.......2007-06-08
This book is old and tired. I'm very sorry I bought this and the Centennial book. I tested recipes for California Fresh over 20 years ago and they remain superior to this collection.
As good as it gets for general use cook books........2002-03-21
I bought this a year ago for my wife for her birthday on the recommendation of a friend. It has proven to be one of the hest gifts I've given her in the 27 years we've been together.
The Junior Leagues individual chapters have published about a zillion individual chapter versions of their cookbook. This represents a sort of "best of" version.
It's excellent for several reasons:
--It includes recopies from all regions of the country, giving it both a national as well as a regional flair.
--It contains more than four hundred recipes, ranging from classic dishes to contemporary fare that have never before been gathered into one volume.
--It includes many original essays on regional cooking and foodways which are both informative and entertaining.
--It provides dozens of sample menus that make planning and organizing meals a breeze.
--It's printed on sturdy, water resistant stock in a spiral binding making it a good choice for family cooking where the kid's are "helping" you with the meal.
Over the past year my wife has used this more than all her other cookbooks combined. She's enjoyed using it immensely--and I've enjoyed the fruits of her labor immensely.
For down home family cooking success, this is as good as it gets!
AJLI has done it again...excellent job!.......2001-06-08
Once again Junior League has produced another fabulous cookbook. These cookbooks make such great hostess gifts!
A New Favorite!.......2001-05-05
This cookbook has rapidly become my new favorite! Every recipe I've tried has been outstanding. I highly recommend it.
Also included are descriptions of community programs sponsored by various local Junior Leagues. Funds from cookbook sales go toward supporting these important efforts.
Once Again.......2000-12-13
Once Again, a masterpiece has been created! For years, the best cookbooks have come from the Junior Leagues - so, what could be better than the "best of the best?" This is the second of AJLI's compilation cookbooks, hitting a home run a couple of years ago with the Centennial Cookbook and doing it again with this one - the Celebration Cookbook. They haven't been around for 100 years for nothin'!

Quintessential NorthWest Cuisine.......2006-05-23
I bought this book a few days ago. It is already a very favorite cookbook (and I have quite a collection). It is one of those rare cookbooks where you want to try almost every recipe. Many of the recipes are native Northwest cuisine (yes, we do have our own cuisine in this neck of the woods) but it also includes recipes that span foods from the the Southwest to Europe.
Well worth the money. Highly recommended.
Book Description
A beautifully designed, full-color photo-essay celebrating the intimate bond between some noted equestrians and the horses they own, ride, train-and love!Leading man Richard Gere fell for a girl on horseback. For actress Alfre Woodard and her daughter Mavis, the connection with horses is spiritual. Chevy Chase says his Icelandics "get very hairy during the winter, but then so do I." And Robert Redford, recalling his month-long ride down the old Outlaw Trail that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid rode, says: "What I marvel at is how wild and free this land still can seem from the back of a horse." In People We Know, Horses They Love, we meet nearly thirty celebrity horse lovers, from Whoopi Goldberg and Christie Brinkley to the original horse whisperer, Buck Brannaman and bestselling author Tami Hoag, who's also an amateur international champion dressage rider. Gorgeous, full-color, never-seen-before photographs capture the majesty and grace of the animals, the beauty of the ranches and stables where they reside and intimate moments shared with their owners. Whether highlighting Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward on their ranch for special needs children, exploring Hilary Duff's passion for wild mustangs, hanging with Jeff Bridges on the set of Seabiscuit, or illuminating the interior lives of Maria Shriver, Morgan Freeman, and many others, People We Know, Horses They Love pays tribute to the special relationship between human and horse. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Program.

Visually and documentary beautiful!.......2007-09-27
I have seen this book before and decided to get it for myself, so I can ponder over the different chapters, and personages at leisure. Filled with one surprise after another, the book delivers photos masterfully done, interwoven with stories of people we know that share a common bond... horses. It is a great gift for the horse lover or the person that likes to read about people in the world of celebrities. Again, I must emphasize that the pictures are truly stunning and well composed. Having been a photographer for over 40 years, I always pay more attention to the details, composures, and art-full feel of pictures, and these photos are charming and "story telling" in their own light. One picture is worth a thousand words, is very true in this book. Buy it, enjoy it, keep it and give it.

Cute book for the kids and celebrity followers.......2007-06-10
This book has some really well taken photography shots of people and their horses. It dosen't lie in its title...alas..the title is incredibly accurate...it shows a bunch of celebrity with their horses and a few with the dogs also.
Did I say the photography was wonderful?...It is.
The choice of the persons included in this book was well thought out..as she included several minority persons for which I give high marks for doing so..as minorities are very poorly represented in most equine books.
The horse crazy among us..(like Myself) will devour this book in less than 30 minutes if you read it..and even faster than that (maybe) if you just look at the pictures. Teens..young adults...minority horse lovers should jump on it...because it contains people that you have seen ..that could be you or your kids in it..and for that reason..it is excellent for the younger crowd too !!!
It isn't smart..or difficult..or magical...or knowledgable......its a good look at American Celebritys the horses they own..and how they got connected to them.
Not Enough Horse, Too Much Hype.......2005-06-24
Where should I start? With the many blurry, grainy photos? Or the photos of celebrities and horses that are hugely under exposed so the "background" can come shining through? I thought I'd get to see celebrities with their horses - in focus. Disappointing photography.
The interviews sound somewhat "canned" and "redundant". As though the celebrities were asked to fill in a form and then the interview was written from the form.
Why two stars? Page 1, Richard Gere and his horse; Page 13 Robert Duvall and horse; Page 89 Kim Novak and her horse.
People Magazine in hardcover with lots of horses.......2005-03-26
This oversize book with photographs by Linda Solomon is exactly as advertised by the title. We see photo-montages of stars like Robert Redford with his favorite horses. The text burbles on about his screen credits and career and the Sundance film festival. Robert Redford talks about his (horseless) childhood and why and how he learned to ride. The other stars that Rappaport and Wilkinson interview and photograph are Gisele Bundchen (super model from Brazil), Chevy Chase, Robert Duvall, Richard Gere (who raises Appaloosas), Melissa Gilbert and Bruce Boxleitner, Whoopi Goldberg (who currently doesn't own any horses, so was photographed with NYC's finest mounted police), Kelse and Camille Grammer, Joe and Billie Perry (Friesians), Katharine Ross and Cleo Elliott, Jane Seymour (who prefers driving to riding), Maria Shriver, Robert Wagner and Jill St. John, Jeff Bridges, Christie Brinkley, William Devane, Morgan Freeman, Kim Novak, Jack Palance, and Dennis Quaid.
The book has two other, shorter sections titled "Pro and Show" and "Healing Hands, Healing Horses." My favorite interview was with ex-jockey Julie Krone. What a gutsy, determined athelete! There are also short articles on the U. S. Equestrian Team, Dressage, and horse healer Buck Brannaman.
"People We Know, Horses They Love" is a pleasant hodge-podge. I would recommend it to star-struck teenagers who also happen to love horses.
Great book for fans of horses and movie stars.......2004-12-27
I've been a horse lover since I got my first pony at the age of six. I am also a working entertainment reporter, so I am always on the lookout to talk to celebs who have horses -- but this book taught even me a few things! Who knew Chevy Chase has Icelandics? That's my favorite breed!
People We Know, Horses They Love is not only very well-written and informative, but the pictures are beautiful too. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because that rating for horse/picture books is reserved for Robert Vavra :)

With 440 pages of text and 32 pages of colour, the 7th edition is the most informative Wade Whimsical book on the market today. The 30% increase in colour illustrations, and 40 or 50 plus text pages just confirms the leading position of "Pat Murray's" Wade Whimsical Collectables Price Guide. With over 50,000 books in print Pat's book has certainly become the bible of Wade Whimsies.
The Author of the Charlton Standard Catalogues of Wade has been an Antique and Collectables dealer since 1970 and a Wade collector since 1974. As a Wade collector the author has an added interest and strives to obtain all the necessary information about Wade models for her own use and naturally to share with her fellow collectors.
The old maxim "A picture is worth a thousand words" is very true, but in some cases a picture of an older Wade model cannot be found or one that is found is not suitable for publication. The detailed descriptions and the correct names of Wade models in the listings are imperative to the collector. Information is added to each publication when new data regarding previously listed models, such as a date of issue or new colourway has come to light. With these additions the guide is constantly changing, which will help the collector build a meaningful collection.
A good collector is a well-informed collector, and it is most important that a collector know his subject. The Charlton Standard Catalogues by Pat Murray go all the way in providing an essential guide to the models produced by the Wade Potteries. All models are listed with their issue dates, the commissioner of the model (if any), the set order and their various colourways. It is most important to collectors that they determine how many more items are available in a particular set or series of models.
The up-to-date price guide allows the collector or the dealer to purchase models to complete a collection at the appropriate price, whether it is to add to their own collection or to buy, sell or trade. The values are gleaned from the many dealers' sales lists that abound on the Internet; they are also gathered from Antique and collectables malls, Antique / Wade shows, and of course on-line auctions.
Each time a new edition of the book is published it contains a wealth of fresh information on models produced during the previous year, it also includes hitherto unknown models that have been found and reported to the author since the last edition was published. With the help of the Charlton Standard Catalogues of Wade the collector can acquire information on a very popular and ever increasing collectable.

Product Description
The 8th edition of Wade Whimsical Collectables will be released August 10th in North America, and in the U.K. approximately two weeks later on August 24th. This new edition contains 384 pages filled with information on Wade Whimsical Collectables, current to 2007. Added to this are 24 pages of colour divided into three eight-page sections illustrating colour, design and mould variations to assist the collector in identifying their many varieties. This edition, the first since January 2004, has been completely reorganized, revised and priced. With the definition of a Whimsey as something quaint, comical, unusual or fanciful, the Wade models which did not fit the whimsical category have been removed from the previous Wade Whimsical catalogue and incorporated into Wade Collectables. The book now lives up to its whimsical name. Unfortunately, collectors now require two books if they wish to keep abreast of the Wade market. These two books now contain the most popular and active of what is collectable within Wade models. Wade Whimsical Collectables no longer includes: Leprechauns and Pixies, Money Boxes, or Walt Disney models such as the Hat Box Series, Disney Blow-ups or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. On page xiii of the introduction to Wade Whimsical Collectables is a listing of models transferred from Wade Whimsical Collectables to Wade Collectables. These items are not whimsical but brand collectables in their own right. Six main chapters compose the new Wade Whimsical Collectables catalogue: Comic Animals and Birds, Happy Families, Novelty Animals and Birds, Storybook Figures, Whimsies, and Miscellaneous Sets, along with three supplementary chapters, on Fairs and Events, The Official International Wade Collector s Club Figures, and Commissioned Items. Now, with the new layout and listings placed in alphabetical order, locating your model will be easier than before. We are on the way to publishing a user friendly catalogue. A note on pricing: All collectables, large or small, high or low price point, are under stress from the changing demographics of our time. As with everything else this will pass, but until it does we will see prices that are not agreeable to most collectors. Whimsies with over 55,000 books in print is surely the bible to the Wade Whimsical collector, and along with its companion book Wade Collectables is your best buy on information about Wade.

Only 6 Designs - Relatively High Price.......2005-07-20
Money Folding 2 by Florence Temko has the same problem that the initial Money Folding book had. Both books only have 6 designs each - but have a relatively high price tag. With Money Folding 2 she doesn't even bother to number the pages since there are so few. There are 11 pages of instructions, plus a page of introduction and then 2 pages at the end for tips. That's it, that's the entire book.
The items you learn how to fold here are: a peacock, a necklace, a flower, a jumping frog, a crow puppet, and a pair of earrings. At least where the first book had super-common shapes that you could find anywhere on the web, these designs are a little more unique. The peacock is the most interesting to me, with its lovely fan tail. Unfortunately the only way you can keep that tail up is with double-sided tape or glue :). The necklace, a "lei", is more like making a series of circles with separate dollar bills and then stringing them on twine or yarn.
The frog does look vaguely frog-like - in essence you push it over and it rolls. The flower is really just a circle shape, stuck on a straw. The earrings are a simple twist fold, that you attach to earring posts. Finally, the crow puppet looks sort of like a beak, I grant you. But I like those four-part beaks you make out of paper much better - something I think every school child learns to make somewhere along the way.
I suppose I might say that if you really want the peacock, that it's worth the price of the book plus shipping to get the peacock design (as long as you have glue and / or tape around). But really what I would say is that there are several other books on the market that include the peacock AND include many other cool designs - and that the per-design cost is far lower on those.
Buy only if you like the 6 projects on the cover.......2005-03-31
The directions are very well done and I'd rate them 5 stars. But this booklet "Money Folding 2" is just that---a BOOKLET. It has only 6 projects which are shown on the beautifully photographed cover. If you don't think that the 6 projects on the cover are worth the $7 price tag then you will be disappointed. (Add postage to that price if you aren't wise enough to group your purchases to get free shipping from Amazon). I had previously bought Florence Temko's first booklet called just "Money Folding" because I loved the heart shaped "magic" wand on the cover. The wand is fabulous and has been a big hit with the kids who have received them from me. I would have paid $7 for just the wand directions but I also liked the other 5 projects. I bought "Money Folding 2" (the booklet that this review is for) because I liked the flower in a pot project on the cover. I was not as thrilled with this project as I was with the wand but I learned how to do it and have now passed the booklet onto a school teacher.
Keep the money, don't fold it.......2003-12-29
The only redeeming model in this book is the dollar-bill ring. Your best bet is to pick it up used if it's under a dollar, or find it in a library and copy the diagrams for the ring.
This is the kind of book that parents buy for the kids because of the neat-o cover. Mom and Dad--- avoid!
Disappointing.......2000-05-19
Should have known by the price that the content and quality would be poor! There were only 6 designs to make - two of which are jewelry. I expected more. Would be best to save your money!
Book Description
Sherry V. Nelson examines the adaptations and extinction of Sivapithecus, a Miocene hominoid, in the Siwaliks of Pakistan. Three different studies involving dental microwear and stable isotopic analyses are interwoven to provide reconstructions of the preferred landscape, climate, and diet of Sivapithecus as well as changes in the environment that led to its extinction. This book presents new techniques that allow for a more detailed analysis of faunal and environmental change than ever before documented for an ape clade throughout its radiation and demise.

Book Description
In the spring of 1946, following the defeat of Hitler’s Germany, America found itself still struggling with the subtler but no less insidious tyrannies of racism and segregation at home. In the midst of it all, Jackie Robinson, a full year away from breaking major league baseball’s color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was undergoing a harrowing dress rehearsal for integration—his first spring training as a minor league prospect with the Montreal Royals, Brooklyn’s AAA team. In Blackout, Chris Lamb tells what happened during these six weeks in segregated Florida—six weeks that would become a critical juncture for the national pastime and for an American society on the threshold of a civil rights revolution.
Blackout chronicles Robinson’s tremendous ordeal during that crucial spring training—how he struggled on the field and off. The restaurants and hotels that welcomed his white teammates were closed to him, and in one city after another he was prohibited from taking the field. Steeping his story in its complex cultural context, Lamb describes Robinson’s determination and anxiety, the reaction of the black and white communities to his appearance, and the unique and influential role of the press—mainstream reporting, the alternative black weeklies, and the Communist Daily Worker—in the integration of baseball. Told here in detail for the first time, this story brilliantly encapsulates the larger history of a man, a sport, and a nation on the verge of great and enduring change.

A New and Revealing Look at a Familiar Story.......2006-07-23
An excellently researched and written book. One would think that there isn't much new to be said about Jackie Robinson, who is among the two or three most written-about men in the history of baseball, but Lamb tells a story that has previously received little attention, mainly because the mainstream news media didn't think it was worth covering.
Lamb points out that black newspapers covered Robinson from the moment he began spring training with the Montreal Royals in 1946, and he uses many of those papers as his sources. In retelling the story of Branch Rickey's historic decision to sign Robinson and break baseball's color line, he refuses to treat Rickey as a lone, saintly hero; he points out that, for decades before Rickey joined the fray, black newspapers, socialists, and Communists had been agitating for the inclusion of blacks in organized baseball. Lamb shows that Lester Rodney, sportswriter for The Daily Worker, was also instrumental in the struggle to bring integration to the game. His is a name that seems to have been dropped from the record when other authors retell Robinson's story.
The most powerful aspect of the book is the way Lamb portrays the gagging outrageousness of the racial prejudice and discrimination Robinson faced in the Jim Crow-era American south. The vicious, buck-naked bigotry he and other blacks encountered ought to make every white American ashamed.
