Before his death in 1939, Joseph Roth produced 13 works of fiction--most of them sardonic valentines to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a Galician Jew, not to mention a biting social critic, Roth knew that life under the Dual Monarchy was not exactly flawless. Yet he retained a deep attachment to the old regime, which must have looked more and more civilized as the Nazis came to power. In 1933 he fled to Paris, where he commenced a slow, alcoholically induced suicide--managing, however, to write several more books, of which The Tale of the 1002nd Night was the last to appear.

Like so many of Roth's novels, this one is a celebration of Vienna in its pre-Anschluss days--during the 1870s, to be precise. "At this time," we're informed, "the world was deeply and frivolously at peace." In keeping with the frivolity, perhaps, Roth puts a fairy-tale-like spin on his memories. He opens The Tale of the 1002nd Night with a state visit by the Shah of Iran, transforming historical fact into whimsical fiction. And once he shifts the narrative to Vienna proper, his characters make their entrances and exits with brilliant, dreamlike rapidity. It would be tempting to compare the entire story--which revolves around the seduction and abandonment of the prostitute Mizzi Schinagl by the boneheaded Baron Taittinger--to a puppet show. But these puppets are capable of registering deep pain and transformation. Taittinger, for example, gets to utter the first honest sentence of his adult life: "He had caught himself telling the truth; and for the first time in many years he blushed, the way he had once blushed as a boy when he'd been caught telling a lie." And even Mizzi, the flattest character in a book full of wafer-thin ones, has her moments of electrifying humanity:

She became terribly sad. Her simple soul was briefly illumined, indirectly and at a lower wattage, by the light that makes older and wiser people so happy and so sad: the light of understanding. She understood the sorrow and futility of everything.
Roth, too, understood that sorrow. But in The Tale of the 1002nd Night, which has been beautifully translated by Michael Hofmann, he counters its gravitational pull with small, stunning perceptions and a kind of bemused decency. Indeed, Roth the novelist has precisely the "calculating kindliness" he ascribes to one Herr Efrussi--and this, he goes on to point out, is "the only sort that doesn't wreak destruction on this earth." --James Marcus

Book Description

Vienna of the late nineteenth century, with its contrasting images of pomp and profound melancholy, provides the backdrop for Joseph Roth's final novel, which he completed in exile, a few years before his tragic death in 1939. This brilliant, allegorical tale of seduction and personal and societal ruin, set amidst exquisite, wistful descriptions of a waning aristocratic age, provides an essential link to our understanding of Roth's extraordinary fictive powers.

4 out of 5 stars Sometime there isn't anyone behind the curtain.......2007-04-09

Roth's last novel before he drank himself to death in 1939 Paris is his farewell to Fin-de-siecle Vienna and the Austro-Hungarian Empire/Kingdom/uh. Monarchy. Take your pick as what to call the late 1800s Dual Monarchy which was known as the K and K (Empire and Kingdom). Mostly this story follows the adult lives of lower class merchant girl and an aristocratic member of the Cavalry (a Baron, whose name, Tattinger, is a french champagne).

But what we are really treated to is a view of how at a time of peace, in the latter half of the 19th century, the average person was no smarter or more engaged with the world than your lowly serf or peasant. People were only involved on the surface of what was happening in the world and were very happy for parties, pretty costumes (uniforms for the officers) and a life without problems.

While the book was written in interwar Paris, Roth was mirroring what was happening in much of Europe, post-The Great War. Europe was trying it's best to go on as if the war never happened the same way that 1870s Vienna tried to ignore it's ignominious loss in 1866 to Prussia. The loss forced the creation of the Dual Monarchy, and the sharing of power by the Empire
(reflected by Franz Josef) with the largest of it's multiple minorities. Vienna was spending it's time ignoring the loss of 'actual' Great Power status by 'dressing up the pig'. (No matter how much make-up, clothes and jewels you put on a pig, it's still a pig.)

The sarcasm that Roth directs at the aristocracy, is both biting (and to most of us in this century, old hat) and funny. Baron Tattinger, who would have made a great blond, is the airhead of airheads. When he is forced to look at 'people' for the first time, he is amazed to find that his company sergeant (whom he has known for thirteen years) actually reads and has a history prior to joining the Cavalry. Wow! Right up there with Newton getting hit with an apple. The Baron has trouble fitting him into his world view of the three levels of people: interesting, so-so or boring.

The book loses a lot of it's strength being read in the 21st century, where we have George Bush and Karl Rove, acting like royalty who can do no wrong and Rumsfeld running around yelling 'off with their heads'. But the sarcasm does hold up and comes through after all these years.

4 out of 5 stars too much real life for these fringe characters.......2005-07-27

Chekhov once said--okay, I got this from one of those greeting cards you find sold in urban bookstores--"Any idiot can handle a crisis; it's this daily life that's wearing me out." But the main characters in this book can handle neither a crisis nor much of daily life.

Brief synopsis: the Shah of Persia travels to Vienna where, at a ball, he spies the beautiful Countess W and desires an evening alone with her. As this won't do, of course, Baron Taittinger is pressed into service to procure a reasonable facsimile. This he does, in the form of Mizzi, a woman the baron has debauched and fathered a son by, and who has subsequently entered Frau Matzner's brothel. Following the expense of his passion, the Shah makes Mizzi a rich woman by presenting her with an enormous string of pearls. The Shah returns home, and misery soon descends upon the baron, the prostitute, and even the madam.

It seems to me that Roth sets up a contrast between the main characters, who come from the fringes of life (high or low) and are absolutely unable to negotiate relationships in any normal way, and secondary characters, who appear on the fringes of the novel and try unsuccessfully to help the others through. This is why others have charged--accurately in a sense--that the characters are "wafer-thin" or "puppet-like" or like wax figures.

Baron Taittinger, in particular, is a cypher who reminds one of the baron, the father, in the Radetzky March: he is unable to cope with anything that does not comport with his status as both a baron and a "Captain of the Horse"--and even those roles he occupies more or less by rote, following rules that he dimly learned at a young age. It is not hard to predict his demise even as one, oddly perhaps, hopes against it. (In this I disagree with the reviewer who says that the reader does not become involved with the characters.)

Last point, if you haven't read Roth before, you have missed out on his excellent plots and brilliant writing, so simple and pithy. A few examples:
the Shah, following his night with Mizzi and realizing that European women are not particularly different from Persian: "He felt like a boy who, after an hour, has broken his new toy."

Mizzi had no understanding of men because "in a so-called house of ill repute...one learned as much about the real world as one might in a girl's boarding school."

The baron's life "contained an incident he could never tell anyone about. It circulated like a foreign body in his bloodstream; every so often it came up to his heart and squeezed it and pricked it and drilled into it."

I'm not doing the book justice, but enough--this is a highly entertaining and provocative novel. I can't bring myself to give it five stars, but let's call it 4.7.

3 out of 5 stars "In this short book there is enough for many books.".......2001-05-29

This quotation from the introduction by Michael Hofmann, poet and translator of four Roth novels, highlights both the delights and limitations of this book. Like the Radetzky March, it has all the ingredients for a greatly exciting read and touches on all aspects of society in the Austro-Hungarian empire--worlds of the court, the army, journalism, night life, the law, popular entertainment, and even prostitution. Unlike the Radetzky March, however, it is sketchy, and doesn't draw you into the action or involve you with the characters. There's a curious disconnect between the characters and the reader, akin in many ways to the disconnect between most of the characters and each other, perhaps because there are many of them in this short novel, and perhaps because Roth himself felt disconnected, living in exile and dying of alcoholism at the time he wrote it.

The visit of the Shah of Persia and his one-night-stand with a young Viennese woman provide fertile ground for wonderful dialogue and lyrical descriptions, but the characters are like exhibits in the wax museum which plays a part in the conclusion of the novel. In short, this novel is intriguing primarily for its detailed and exacting recreation of an historical context, but its large scope and small size act as barriers to reader involvement.

5 out of 5 stars Achingly beautiful work.......2000-10-29

The editorial reviewers have done more justice to this beautiful book than I can. It is everything they say it is: a bittersweet delight to read.

4 out of 5 stars The Hope Diamond's little sister...the pearls.......1999-12-05

I enjoyed this book very much. Roth is a much under appreciated author today and his style of writing is as modern as anyone's. While the plot meanders along a trite line, the heart of all Roth's work is the Austro-Hungarian Empire and all it's failings in morals, people and politics. This, along with Roth's Radetzky March, and you will have all you'll ever need to know about that important era.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and unmarred .......2005-06-07

I purchased this volume because it reprints Glenn Fabry's beautifully painted covers without any other details such as the name of the book, number, or upc marking them up. It's just the paintings, and they are a wonder to behold. Fabry's art is so fabulous, so realistic, so wonderful.

It also was supposed to contain details and comments by both Glenn Fabry himself, and the ever expressive Garth Ennis. However, I was slightly disappointed that both of them kept their comments so brief. Only a few of the covers have comments that actually shed any light on the series, other comments were `turn the page' or `I have nothing to say'.

Also, this is just the covers. It contains no Preacher story material.

So it's great if you're a fan of Fabry's, but if you're looking for something to read, or something that will give you great insight into the Preacher series, you might want to look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-02-07

Undoubtadly one of the best comic series' ever created since the Sandman, Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher saga is still one of the most revered and beloved comics of all time. Dead or Alive, a collection of every issue's covers and supposed to be loaded with extras, was anxiously awaited by loyal fans of the series, and much to their disappointment, this collection offers little. While it does offer every Glen Fabry cover of every issue in the series, the original cover for issue #52 (a cover which was scrapped because of the Columbine incident) is not here, yet it is discussed. Also, the much looked forward to commentary by Ennis and Fabry is the biggest disappointment in the book. There are a few chuckles here and there, but it is scant and does not go as in depth as many had hoped. Other features, such as original sketches and the fantasticly drawn covers themselves, are worth taking a look at the book for, but die hard Preacher fans will feel gyped and only wish there was more.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New For Longtime Fans...........2003-06-24

As a longtime of Garth Ennis' legendary DC/Vertigo comic Preacher, I was very excited to see this collection, which promised not only every Glenn Fabry cover from the series, related mini-series and one-shots, and trade paperbacks, but commentary by Fabry and Ennis, behind-the-scenes stuff like sketches and rejected covers. The book is a great buy for newer fans, but longtime Preacher faithful won't find nearly enough value for the hefty price tag. Ennis and Fabry's comments are REALLY brief, and although there are a few laughs to be had from the acerbic duo, two or three chuckles do not make a book worth thirty smackers. The most glaring omission is the original cover from Preacher #52; The depiction of an 8 year-old Tulip getting a gun for Christmas from her Dad was scrapped because of the Columbine school shootings. The cover is discussed here, but not shown. Considering the unused cover was the primary reason for my buying the book in the first place, I was pretty angry to find it wasn't included. It's a nice-looking book, but if you've been a fan of Preacher for a while, chances are you've seen every piece of Fabry art contained here.

5 out of 5 stars "A hell of a vision".......2000-11-20

In my crowded apartment, there's very few comic books in my collection that don't get put away in a comic longbox. Only a handful of titles make the cut to be displayed on my bookshelf: Neil Gaiman's "Sandman," James Robinson's "Starman," Jeff Smith's "Bone," and Garth Ennis's "Preacher": all of these I keep out to take down and read again and again.

Too often these days a comic book series is plagued by shifting writers, interior artists, and cover artists; it's a rare case when a unifying vision keeps a top team together for a full run on a series. It's even more rare when the team (writer Ennis, interior artists Steve Dillon, and cover artist Glenn Fabry) produce one of the more controversial, black-humored, anarchic, and *human* comic books in the past ten years. It's Ennis's writing that kept me coming back month after month, but it was the vibrant, vaguely unsettling Fabry portrait of Jesse Custer on the first issue that got me to pick the series up in the first place (well, that and my friend J.C. telling me I'd be a wanker if I passed on this series).

This gorgeous color collection of the original painted covers to the recently-concluded "Preacher" series is a great overview of how, month after month, Fabry's powerful art unified the series and made it one of the most distinctive and outrageous on the comic book stands. Plenty of original sketches show how covers evolved, and the covers themselves are reproduced without logos or sales information to give you the full effect of the art. Ennis and Fabry comment on (and critique) each cover. My only complaint is that the commentary is sometimes somewhat skimpy commentary.

A fair warning: like the series itself, this collection is not for everyone. Black-humored, blasphemous, sometimes physically grotesque but always powerful, these images have the power to offend...well, just about everybody. It helps to be a Preacher fan and understand these images in context, and to come to this collection with an open mind and a sense of humor.

For a "Preacher' fan this is a necessity; I'd even recommend it to graphics people or budding artists as a great overview of design and anatomy that straddles the grotesque and the fantastic. You'll proudly display it on your bookshelf next to your paperback bound volumes of the Preacher comic. (Now, DC, now about issuing the comic volumes themselves in hardcover much like the Gaiman "Sandman" volumes?)

Book Description

Forged from the Ruins

A planet ravaged by the apocalyptic blast of 2001 gave birth to a new world of savagery -- and a new breed of hero. In a land where violence rules with absolute authority, Ryan Cawdor and his wayfarer survivalists roam the strange, nascent twenty-second century, living by their own creed of honor as they continue their search for a sanctuary they can call home.

Eternal Quest

In what was once the nuclear testing ground of the predark world, the Marshall Islands are now the kingdom of the grotesque Lord Baron Kinnison. Here in this world of slavery and brutality the companions have fought a fierce war for survival, on land and sea -- yet the crafty baron still conspires to destroy these interlopers. Activating a twentieth-century hot air balloon left untouched by the blast, they escape to the neighboring pirate-ruled Forbidden Island, with the baron's sec men in hot pursuit -- and become trapped in a war for total supremacy of this water world.

Not even Deathlands can deny the human will to survive.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2001-09-30

This was one of the best individual Deathlands novels that has some out in quite some time. It had great action and the last half of the book was so exciting I could barely put it down. One of the best and most touching parts was a tribute to Laurence James...very nicely done. I recommend this one highly! Thanks.

4 out of 5 stars DEATHLANDS CHRONICLES ENDS WITH A BANG!.......2001-09-20

This 3rd and last of the SKYDARK CHRONICLES was a fun and exciting read in and of itself, but as a continuation to a storyline that was supposed to have a certain subplot, it was not there. Nick Polatta, this is probably your best well written novel yet in this series, the problem lies in this supposed trilogy that is supposed to take you somewhere pertaining to the trilogy name its named after - it takes you nowhere there! BUT, on the other hand, as a stand alone story, it was a great action/adventure story with some of the best action written sequences and situations. The thing I miss is how in the old Deathlands novels that arms and ammunition was very hard to find - where recently they abound seemingly everywhere and in abundance! That was what made Deathlands work - the hard struggle to survive the new dark ages and find that old pre-dark stuff. Also what happened to the sex in these new books? Ryan and Krysty dont seem as close as they were back in the days when the original author Laurence James wrote of the closeness of his characters. The ending in this trilogy seemed rushed in tying things together and the bad guys that were built-up in the first two seemed to be just brushed away and almost forgotton. But don't get me wrong, the novel just by itself without being a continuation, was a good reading chapter in this post-apopcalyptic saga series that is still some of the best - if not THE BEST - in action adventure/sci-fi today!

Cereal. It's not just comfort food or for breakfast anymore. The "Breakfast of Champions" goes 24/7 with these recipes. But that's only part of the fun here. Also in the mix are fun facts: did you know that the average person consumes about 10 pounds - 160 bowls of cereal per year? or that "Breakfast cereals rank third in the list of grocery store items on which Americans spend their money, behind only carbonated beverages and milk - and ahead of bread, hamburger, and cigarettes?" That "the US cereal industry uses in excess of 800 million pounds of sugar per year, enough to coat every person with more than 3 pounds of sugar?" Or that, if you stick a magnet in any "iron-fortified" cereal, black fuzzy iron will stick to it? The physics of the famous snap, crackle, pop? Accompanying all these mind blowing, teeth-decaying facts are grand, simply grand, photos of cereal boxes and commercials from those Saturday Baby Boomer mornings in front of the TV. And, oh yeah, recipes for Cap'n Crunch crabcakes, nutty Apple (Jack-ed) Bleu Cheese Terrine, Trix lemon yellow and orange orange meringue pie in a glass, and much much more.

Mikey and I like it. We really, really like it!

      Book Description

Do Dogs Go To Heaven? is a question the author's Mom asked a number of ministers. Hearing each one give different "shallow" answers, Jean Holmes felt this question deserved a better answer. The Bible does answer her Mom's question with an emphatic "YES!" Long held theology that animals lack souls and spirits is soundly refuted with numerous Bible texts. This book addresses hard questions, like why God required animal sacrifices, in loving truth. The role of animals and the relationship Jesus Christ had with animals is illuminating. This book presents a brilliant tapestry of Bible verses, interwoven with animal behavior and intelligence studies, and anecdotal evidence of animals as intelligent, caring companions here and in the hereafter. Bible accounts of animals as healers, helpers and rescuers are laid against modern narratives. Do Dogs Go to Heaven is very readable, yet crafted with scholarly precision. It is already providing comfort to those who have lost loved animal friends.

This book helped me right after my beloved dog, Maxi, passed away. I was afraid I would never see him again, but after reading this book I am assured that he is in heaven. A really awesome book for anyone who is suffering from the lose of a pet.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book that Deals With Animals in the Bible!!.......2007-05-30

This book is so much better than Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates. Ms. Holms has clearly done her research and has provided numerous examples of what the Bible says about our pets. After loosing my Maltese in February 2007, this book has brought me comfort and was exactly what I was looking for. Anyone can write a book based on their opinion of if animals go to heaven (hence my reference to another book) but Ms. Holms, being a lawer, knows how to research and provide scripture proof of what God thinks of our pets. Perfect for those who want a clear understanding of what the Bible says about our pets. And for those who said they could research this information on their own, yes you could save some money, but you would spend so much TIME looking for the answers yourself (believe me, I've tried). This book already sums it up for us. Thanks Jean!

      1 out of 5 stars Not uplifting.......2006-05-07

I did not find solace in this book - no tenderness or, in my opinion, understanding of how hurtful the loss of a pet is.

I do not recommend this book.

Thanx for writing this book. I have not read it...yet, but have read a lot of entries here. I have lost my German sheperd, Chloe, in early August 2005. She died of old age. I have grand mal epilepsy & have noticed many times that she knew that they were coming on even before I had an aura or not. Sad eyes & all.

        Book Description

The exquisite and everyday beautiful linens and lace photographed for this book represent collectible household styles made in Europe and North America during the 20th century. Both rare and commonly found examples are included so that readers can learn to differentiate between the two groups. The chapters are organized by types of work, including Appenzell, Battenberg, Bobbin lace, chemical and other machine laces, crochet, cutwork, embroidery, linen damask, explained with origins and copies liberally discussed. The photographs are breathtaking, from over-all room settings to minute details. This is a visually exciting book. The price guide is a valuable tool for this expanding field of collectibles which seem to be undervalued when the quality and supply of fine examples are considered.

As a long time linen lover and now professional dealer I find this tombe to be a wonderful 'picture' book ~ but when it comes to actual informative content I feel that there are better sources ~ the information given is helpfull for the beginning to intermediate collector and the pictures are exquisite but somehow the lack of detail in the narrative portions undermines the supossed purpose of the book. To its credit the book is nicely arranged by subject but lacks a comprehensive glossary. Overall, not a bad place to start whet your appetite for knowledge about vintage linens, but if you want detailed informtion supported by anyting more than cursory research you will put the book down hungry. ~ Sincerly, Ann Christine ~ thelinenlady

We found this book to be very informative and of great help in knowing what a gem mine or business has to offer in gem's and minerals. We think that this guide is a must for any one looking for gems to know what they do to help you and offer you . very ,very good .

        1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2006-06-21

Really thin volumes that hardly cover each state included. Big on organization and sections, but what is the use if they say "no information."

Most of the content is museums which can be found on the web or in free state tourism guides. The list of collecting sites (free, or fee) is sorely underdeveloped.

I returned my copy, even though I wont see much $ after shipping charges are deducted from the refund amount. I was just plain insulted by the book. (I got Northeast and Southeast books - sent both back!)

        Do not buy!

This book is loaded with useless information. If your looking for someplace to mine gold or gems. This book will not tell you. It does however provide you with guide services contact information. So if your looking for a river or area in your state where you can pan some gold. Don't look in this book! I didn't see anything you can't see in the yellow pages of your local phone book.

A real disappointment. I have looked over the "Quadrant" series by Eckart and it was much better. I would recommend a book search for the "Gems and Minerals of America" by Jay Ellis Ransom, it has much more comprehensive information and a lot more than even the "Quadrant" series contains. But of course local "collecting guides" are even better. Contact the clubs in the area you are going to visit and see if they will let you go on one of their field trips or suggest a location. I'm VP of the Montgomery Gem and Mineral Society, we would love to take you on a trip.

I live in New Mexico and this book lists only 4 sites to mine / rock hound. I know of at least 35 sites in the state none of witch the book lists not to mention the books 4 sites are all pay sites where you must pay a fee to dig. The author did little to no research on the available sites in this state. In the back of this book is a form called readers contribution where the author wants you the reader to send them the locations of mines you know of so they don't have to do any research and may profit off your work or knowledge. Do not waste your time on this book if you are serious about rock mineral and gem hunting.

Oh well, I suppose that this guide tells the truth and has no glaring inadequacies, but maybe the whole Southwest is to big to cover in a book to introduce the layman to gem and mineral collecting. Kinda light...

        Book Description

"The Long Tail" is a powerful new force in our economy: the rise of the niche. As the cost of reaching consumers drops dramatically, our markets are shifting from a one-size-fits-all model of mass appeal to one of unlimited variety for unique tastes. From supermarket shelves to advertising agencies, the ability to offer vast choice is changing everything, and causing us to rethink where our markets lie and how to get to them. Unlimited selection is revealing truths about what consumers want and how they want to get it, from DVDs at Netflix to songs on iTunes to advertising on Google. However, this is not just a virtue of online marketplaces; it is an example of an entirely new economic model for business, one that is just beginning to show its power. After a century of obsessing over the few products at the head of the demand curve, the new economics of distribution allow us to turn our focus to the many more products in the tail, which collectively can create a new market as big as the one we already know. The Long Tail is really about the economics of abundance. New efficiencies in distribution, manufacturing, and marketing are essentially resetting the definition of whats commercially viable across the board. If the 20th century was about hits, the 21st will be equally about niches.

This book started off as an article in Wired Magazine, and it was an excellent one. But Anderson must have decided to cash in, because the book doesn't add anything that wasn't covered in the article itself. It's not a complex concept.

Read the article on the Wired website. Then go spend your money on something from a tiny niche market.

I am not much of a business mind but I think I get the picture here. Instead of twenty percent of the product bringing in eighty percent of the revenue ninety- eight percent of the product is going to bring in all the revenue. Having so much available, and having ready access to it means sales no longer concentrate on a relatively few items. Freedom of choice abounds, niches multiply, Alvin Toffler is happy, future shock is no longer shocking, customization is here forever, and we all can have anything we want as long as we are able to pay for it.
Good. But I think of this in another way. Does this mean that 'value' also will not be centered as we ordinarily center it in the great works, the masterpeices, the few chosen ones? Does it mean our whole conception of valuing cultural goods will change, and a few big things will be less worshipped while many more appreciated? In other words will deTocqueville be happy here because 'equality' is in the saddle and mankind has many little good things, instead of the aristocracy only having a few?
And what does that mean for creators of culture? As a writer can I now happily post my unpublished writings with the thought that perhaps a few will read them, where before none did. In other words a moneyless long- tail is still a long- tail.
I don't know. But I do sense Anderson has hit on to a new truth here which will have all kinds of implications better business people than me will have to see.

        Book Description
In October 1985, at age 27, Danny Meyer, with a good idea and scant experience, opened what would become one of New York City's most revered restaurants--Union Square Cafe. Little more than twenty years later, Danny is the CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations, which includes 11 unique dining establishments, each at the top of its game. How has he done it? How has he consistently beaten the odds and set the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around?

In this landmark book, Danny shares the lessons he's learned while developing the winning recipe for doing the business he calls "enlightened hospitality." This innovative philosophy emphasizes putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way: The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors. This way of prioritizing stands the more traditional business models on their heads, but Danny considers it the foundation of every success that he and his restaurants have achieved.

Full of behind-the-scenes history on the creation of Danny's most famous restaurants and the anecdotes, advice, and lessons he has accumulated on his long and ecstatic journey to the top of the American restaurant scene, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of innovative insights that are applicable to any business or organization.

Service with a Smile: Dishing with Danny Meyer
Is the customer always right? According to Danny Meyer, one of America's leading restauranteurs, the answer is no--but "they must always feel heard." Named one of the most influential New Yorkers of 2006 by New York magazine, Meyer, the founder and co-owner of 11 of Manhattan's most influential restaurants, including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, The Modern, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack, has penned Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality, a business book that reads like food lit and equal part personal memoir. Amazon.com senior editor Brad Thomas Parsons took some time from his daily long-distance day-dreaming of Shake Shack and caught up with the ever-gracious Danny Meyer over e-mail to ask about his new book, the Food Network, his favorite cookbooks, insider tips on dining out, and much more.

          Book Description

Barbed wire cuts across more than just property, war and politics. This most vicious tool of control has played a critical role in the modern experience, be it territorial expansion or the settlement of local and international conflicts. However, it has other histories: those constructed through image and text in the arts, media and popular culture. These representations – in painting, photography, poetry, personal memoirs, cartoons, novels, advertisements and film – have never before been critically examined. In this book, Alan Krell investigates the place barbed wire holds in the social imagination.Invented in France in 1860, barbed wire was developed independently in the USA, where it was used to control livestock on the Great Plains, both to "keep out" and "keep in". Promoted as the Ideal Fence, barbed wire’s menacing qualities were soon made manifest. The epithet, "The Devil’s Rope", anticipated its transformation into a tool of war in the late 19th and early 20th century. Henceforth, it would become synonymous with repression. Barbed wire’s conflicting character makes it an appropriate symbol of modernity, and Krell shows how the use of this symbolism in contemporary art has given barbed wire meanings beyond the historical and political realms.
