Book Description

In this novel of menace and eroticism, Richard Ford updates the tradition of Conrad for the age of cocaine smuggling. The setting is Oaxaca, Mexico, where Harry Quinn has come to free his girlfriend's brother, Sonny, from Jail and, ideally, to get him away form the suavely sadistic drug dealer who suspects Sonny of having cheated him.

"His prose has a taut, cinematic quality that bathes his story with the same hot, mercilessly white light that scorches Mexico."--New York Times Book Review

1 out of 5 stars Out of Luck.......2004-07-09

Never has a book involving cocaine smuggling, at least three murders, and Mexican prisons been so boring or unsatisfying. I've read Ford's Frank Bascombe novels and the difference in the writing and subject matter (to use the old cliche) is night and day while there's no difference at all in the lack of passion in the characters, specifically Harry Quinn, the protagonist.

Harry doesn't care if he gets Sonny out, he only cares about getting himself and his wife Rae out of Mexico alive, which may or may not happen, we never even really find that out. Rae doesn't even care about getting her brother out, so both her and Harry are making a half-hearted attempt. This is great, complex stuff, but from a reading standpoint it comes off as cold and clinical, to the point where I never cared if Harry or Rae lived or died. Heck, if one of them died, maybe the other would have had to experience some emotion then.

I'm not saying I want a lot of melodrama, but I do want to feel SOMETHING. I hate putting down a book with a weary sigh and saying, "Yeah, so?" It means the author failed to deliver the goods, although in this case maybe Ford got what he was after, because I felt as cold and detached from everything as Harry.

In terms of the writing, this is nowhere near the caliber of "The Sportswriter" or "Independence Day". The sentences are choppy and filled with a lot of amateurish telling instead of showing and useless adverbs. The characters are all so bland and detached that I never care about them. The action is handled so poorly that in big moments, like the gunfight at the end, I didn't know what was happening. The dialogue was stiff and unbelievable. And of course the plot really never went anywhere. Based on all this, there's simply nothing for me to recommend with this book.

Do yourself a favor, if you want a book with drugs and action, then there are probably plenty of others more exciting. Or if you want decent literary fiction that's a better example of Ford's writing, check out his Bascombe novels. Those might not make you feel much at the end either, but they are written better. Good luck to you if you still try this book, you'll need it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books by my favorite author alive today!.......1999-05-24

Richard Ford is an incredible writer. His works dig deep into the character's psyche. Ford usually finds his characters in the midst of a down cycle in their lives and explores their personal experience as they deal with life's trauma.

Not the usual novel nonsense where everything ends happily ever after, but a real life portrayal as an individual encounters the nitty gritty essentials of life and confronts the tough choices offered.

Ford is among the best American writers alive today and I think that this is his best book.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't carry as a novel.......1998-05-12

Mr. Ford has an excellent prose style and as I began reading the book, I thought it was going to be excellent. The author seems unable to continue with anything interesting and the novel runs out of gas by the half way point. The characters are apathetic regarding their lives and their world and make the reader feel the same. In the end, I no longer cared about the characters (even loathed some of them) and I was happy when I reached the end.

He has been known by countless names and terrifying deeds, but chief among those names is that of Nightfall, a man-or perhaps the legendary demon himself-gifted with a unique power which any sorcerer would kill to possess.

Now, Nightfall is bound by magic and oath to guard and guide a newly-crowned king. But when his liege disappears, Nightfall must get help from Duke Varsah-the man who wants nothing more than to see Nightfall destroyed.

Although a little predictable, it became a "can't put down" saga.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Return.......2005-01-21

It was great to get another chance at following this character. I was really impressed by the complex human/character development. Sudian struggles with his own inner demons more then ever, the story line and plot are almost a backdrop to his own internal discoveries.

The story is well written and a pleasure to read. I'd love nothign more then to see him appear again.

                1 out of 5 stars Not impressed........2004-12-28

Years ago I remember greatly enjoying the original "Nightfall" novel, even upon repeat readings. After reading the "Return of Nightfall" I have to wonder if my memory is playing tricks on me, or if "Return" really is this bad.

                *spoilers*

The central crux of the main character's turmoil (whether or not to return to the guise of Nightfall) is dragged out for roughly three quarters of the book's length. When, after an interminable and pointless delay, he does become Nightfall, there is no pay-off. The promises he broke to Edward and Kelryn are forgotten since everything worked out. They all go off to live happily ever after, and Sudian returns just as effortlessly as Nightfall did. Apparently, Nightfall is schizophrenic, and there is no "real" identity for him to return to. The entire issue is resolved during a juvenile reunion and shallow soul searching session by Nightfall.

The ending is improbable and ludicrous, and that's saying a lot for the fantasy genre. The ending battle has not one, not two, but at least three examples of preposterous "Deus ex Machina" shenanigans. The legal trickery used to save Volkmier and Nightfall from execution are asinine, particularly as there is no real dispute between the nobles and Edward. This was a medieval society, not an episode of Law and Order. The initial premise that placed Sudian/Nightfall on the throne was so strained as to be laughable. I actually could not believe it as I was reading it. Nightfall's motivations are never realistic, and for a supposedly smart guy, he sure wastes a lot of time sailing around needlessly and engaging in diplomatic tomfoolery. Nearly every meaningful sideplot goes nowhere fast.

Reichert's word of the year was apparently "natal", since she uses it at least five hundred times in the course of the book. The prose was amateurish, and the depictions of the action sequences are generic and give us no real sense of how Nightfall accomplishes what he does. How exactly does he evade twenty people in a locked room? How does he manage to steal hordes of personal items while dozens of people surround him? How can he "razor rebound" FOUR daggers being thrown at nearly the same time?

After being glutted upon George R.R. Martin, Robin Hobb, and the first six books of Robert Jordan this novel is not nearly in the same class. If you are looking for even a modicum of intelligence from the novels you read, stay away.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting adventure and great world-building.......2004-12-19

Once, Nightfall had been the most feared criminal and assassin in the world. But now he's reformed. A master of disguise, Nightfall now uses his original form--Sudian--and has sworn never to take up his Nightfall persona again. After all, what use is a demon when Nightfall serves as chancellor to the King, is engaged to a beautiful woman, and has nothing but council meetings and banquets to look forward to? But when King Edward is kidnapped while Nightfall is off on a Magehunt, Nightfall is the logical suspect. To escape his sentence of execution, he needs to bring Edward back alive--and soon. But Sudian isn't the best man to track criminals through the gutters of the world--and he's sworn never to become Nightfall again.

Author Mickey Zuker Reighert establishes a fascinating world and magical system (some percentage of humans are born with a magical talent--a talent that Mages can capture, but only by torturing the talented to death). Putting Nightfall in a position where he must violate one of his most sacred promises--either by failing his King, or by failing himself, his fiancee, and his promise to the King by becoming Nightfall again--increases reader sympathy for Nightfall and increases our investment in a successful outcome--however unlikely that outcome appears. Nightfall's own natal talent, the ability to change his weight, doesn't sound particularly interesting, but Reighert uses it to the full.

Reighert introduces several fascinating secondary characters, especially the pirate Celdurant (who deserves a story of his own) adding to the book's depth. This was the first book by Reighert I've read, but she's published a number and her professionalism shows through.

I was disappointed when I read One More For the Road. That was not on of Mr. Bradbury's better collections. But The Toynbee Convector is full of all the tales and ideas we know Mr. Bradbury is capable of.

We begin with the title story involving time travel. Next we get a dark tale of mysterious trapdoor. From there we meet ghosts, banshees and things that are not there. We return to Green Town, see romances, experience jealousies. and meet writers.

The stories cover a very broad spectrum of Mr. Bradbury's work. Because of that, some who read the collection straight through (as I did) might feel bounced around a little by the changing themes. Others, like myself, will savor each story for what it is, from literary popcorn to written gem.

If you like the author's older collections, then this is one for you. If you thought One More For The Road was his best, there will still be something in her for you.

4 out of 5 stars STORIES THAT SPAN BRADBURY'S CAREER.......2004-01-18

By reading the information on the copyright page, the reader will note that the stories in this book have been culled from over a half dozen publications, possibly many more. As such, it seems reasonable to assume that they were written over a span of a great number of years. I would have found it helpful had the original copyright dates of each entry been included so one could, in some ways, track Bradbury's development as a writer.

Having said that, I did enjoy this book for the very variety that seems to have put off some of the reviewers here. There are stories that are pure Sci-Fi, others that are perfect examples of the horror genre, some that make us want to laugh and/or cry, and many that combine several of these aspects.

One of the latter that I found particularly moving is "Lafayette, Farewell." In it, an elderly man who knows that he is to die soon begins to relive the air battles he fought as a fighter pilot over France during World War I. Every night, he sees and hears the planes of those brave young men who died as he successfully shot their planes out of the sky. He now feels guilty over taking the lives of those innocent young pilots who, like himself, were sent into a war not of their own making.

He fears that he will be consigned to hell for what he has done, and he asks his neighbor how he can, at this late date, be forgiven. His neighbor suggests that, since they, in their planes, are appearing over his house nightly before parachuting to their deaths in his back yard, he plainly and simply, ask them for their forgiveness. In a very moving scene, he does just that and they indicate that he is forgiven.

This is really a touching story, one of my favorites in the book. There are others equally rewarding to read along with some that are among Bradbury's lesser works. I for one, am glad to see as many of Bradbury's stories as possible anthologized in books such as _THE TOYNBEE CONVECTOR_. I'm afraid that those that aren't, and which appeared in more obscure, older Sci-Fi magazines, may be lost to us forever. In my opinion, all of his writing is worth preserving for readers of the future.

5 out of 5 stars It's got the Laurel and Hardy Love Affair!!!!!.......2002-04-12

If Ray Bradbury had never writeen anything but "The Laurel and Hardy Love Affair," a short story which is in this book, he'd be my favorite writer. Of course, I'm a huge fan of those two comedians, and one of their best movies is the "subject" of the article, but the story is just great...I'll bet I've read it at least once a month for over 20 years. Buy this book to read that story!

Ray Bradbury's tales in this book are both inspiring and entertaining. My favorite aspect of these stories is that in many of them, Bradbury seems to take a common event and throw a slight twist of science fiction into story. Each story paints a picture that part of me takes to heart everytime I read it.

                                    2 out of 5 stars Meh..........2007-09-12

Like others have said, this book is a bit misleading. I haven't taken time to count, but I would venture to say that there are probably about 50-75 original recipes. Almost every cupcake uses a basic yellow cake recipe with very small changes like extracts or seeds. And there are hundreds of variations, some are good and some have me scratching my head (chocolate and black pepper cupcakes). Also, there are two chapters on muffins. Don't get me wrong, I really like muffins. A lot. Blueberry really rocks my socks, but a muffin does not a cupcake make. It's a quick bread and doesn't deserve to be in this book.

I don't plan on making any recipes verbatim from this book (mainly because most of them call for self-rising flour and superfine sugar). But, this book does have nice pictures and some pretty good ideas that may lead you to other recipes.

It's a nice book to have, it's cheap and there are pretty pictures, but after some deep browsing, I've come to the sad realization that this is not, in fact, the only cupcake compendium I'll ever need.

1 out of 5 stars VERY Dry Cupcakes.......2007-08-15

I was so excited to get this book, and I was very disappointed. So far, I have made 4 different recipes, and they have all come out so dry that they had to be thrown out! The pictures aren't big enough, and there aren't enough to begin with. All it has is one ingredient variations to make it "count" as another of the 500 recipes....Oh...and they aren't all cupcakes....most are muffins....

3 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I EXPECTED!! .......2007-08-05

Cupcakes are all a rage right now and I've jumped on the band wagon. I was looking for a cookbook full of recipes that I could "show off" with at my many family functions. Needless to say, this book wasn't it. It does have 500 recipes as it states but most of them are recipes that I would not find myself using. Most of the book is recipes for savory muffins, muffins and healthy alternative muffins. I ask you, Who wants to eat a healthy cupcake??? Not I. I wanted ideas to help me create beautiful fancy cupcakes that would impress the hard to impress. I found what I was looking for in the Wilton Cupcake Book. Thanks Wilton

5 out of 5 stars A great cupcake recipe book!.......2007-08-04

I have made 2 sweet cupcakes and 1 savory muffin from this book. They were all very tasty and fun to make! It also has colorful pictures to lend decorating ideas.
I plan to use this book for most of my further cupcake endeavors!

                                    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing results.......2007-08-02

Am I the only one that thinks that the recipes in this book are just way off? I have tried three of the recipes and followed the recipes explicitly. The recipes call for virtually no liquids, so the batters come out to a thick, goopy consistency. The cupcakes are far too dense and chewy. Cakes should be light and moist and spongey. Just by skimming over each recipe, I can tell that the batters are all much too thick.

I give this book 3 stars because I think it has truly great recipe ideas (as far as the different flavors and kinds of cupcakes), the format of the book is very user-friendly, the recipes are concise and easy to follow, and the pictures are great. The recipes and flavors sound delicious and will put you in the right direction, but you'll definitely end up having to adjust each recipe in order to get the right consistency in the batter/cake.

I have 1 indoor arena, 1 covered arena, and can stall up to 100 horses. Cherry Hill writes in an easy to understand and very articulate manner information that anyone owning from one to One Hundred horses should read.

She has a keen and very healthy insight with a common sense approach to horses. I was lucky enough to meet her at "Road To The Horse" where she was one of the prestigious judges, and very impressed with her down to earth and friendly attitude. She has a true passion for horses and what is in their best interest.

I have at least 6 of her books and plan on purchasing the rest as time & money allow. You will get your moneys worth from her.

I find this reference to be very useful, particularly on eBay where many sellers start their bidding above retail price (and try to make it seem like a bargain). It's generally on the mark, though I have found several small inaccuracies (like pieces I own that are not in the book), and their "current valuation" is out of line with real pricing. The publisher has been pretty good about responding to my queries about errors I've found, though we'll have to see the 2nd edition to see if they fix them.

I wish it were in color, but in the interest of making the book affordable, it has only a few color plates.

Information about the designers, suggestions on building a collection and information sources concerning Caithness Glass paperweights (and paperweights in general) is included.

A listing of Collectors Clubs and Chapters around the world is in the front. As are factory shops, visitor centers and Internet customer enquiry addresses. Also included are Auction Houses, Antique Fairs and Collectible Shows.

The most comprehensive resource guide to Caithness Paperweights. If you collect Caithness glass you need this book! My understanding is that if enough of us buy this book, the next edition will have more color pictures. As it is, most are in black and white. Still, the image quality is enough to stir the juices of any collector.

                                    Book Description

The 2nd edition of Caithness Paperweights,, A Charlton Standard Catalogue, will be released September 1st in North America, and September 15th in the United Kingdom. This 432-page standard reference for Caithness Paperweights is a `must have' guide for the paperweight collector. The first edition of Caithness Paperweights was issued in 1999. The newly released second edition updates the listings to 2004. Over 475 weights have been added since 1999, and new discoveries, weights that were overlooked in 1999, have been inserted into their proper sequence, bringing the `Standard Reference' current to the first half of 2004.

Collin Terris, since the first edition was published, has retired from Caithness Glass, but was instrumental in guiding the second edition through the revision process. Over 2,800 weights are listed, approximately 2,500 in the Caithness chapter and over 200 in the Commissioned section.

Within the Caithness section the weights are listed by the year they were issued, and for the years 1969 to 1997 the weights are then listed numerically by the CT number assigned to the weight. For the years 1998 through 2004 the weights are listed alphabetically within their year of issue. We are in the process of transferring all weights to an alphabetical listing within their year of issue to generate a user friendly guide, and this will be completed for the 3rd edition of Caithness Paperweights.

The new and revised 2nd edition contains 32 pages of colour inter-disbursed throughout the catalogue, in four 8-page sections. The colour pages touch on all the different segments of paperweight releases, from the classic Whitefriars weights, to examples of Collin Terris's final designs, to the limited editions and modern designs.

All prices have been completely revised and updated to 2004. Pricing for the second edition was more difficult than in 1999 due to the on-line auctions which now impacts all collectables.

The 2nd edition of Caithness Paperweights is available from dealers, bookstores, collectable stores, and internet bookstores such as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. Caithness Paperweights is also available from the publisher at the cover prices listed, plus postage.

4 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Guide to the Caithness Factory.......2007-10-04

This is the bible for all those who collect or are interested in Caithness paperweights. Caithness has been producing paperweights since the 1960's and is still going strong today. This is the second edition of the book that was first published in 1999. Caithness have produced a large number of weights some better than others but the phrase beauty is in the eye of the beholder was never more true than when referring to paperweights and what one collector likes another may dismiss out of hand.

The book is very comprehensive but only takes us up to 2004, so to find later issue paperweights, another source will have to be used. The book is extremely well laid out and there are a multitude of colored photographs that will set the collector drooling.

Each listing gives the name of the paperweight, designer, date of issue, issue prices, edition size, and status. It also gives tips on building a collection, step-by-step photographs showing the paperweight creation processes, and information sources on both Caithness Glass paperweights and paperweights in general A comprehensive index completes this unique work. It also gives current market values, at the date the book was published but I am always wary of these prices as anything, not just paperweights is only worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it.

All in all a must have for the Caithness collector and a nice addition for anyone interested in paperweights in general.

If you love paperweights, then you will love Caithness paperweights. This reference guide is very comprehensive and certainly helpful in giving you pricing guidiance. I do wish more color plates had been included and mores note about the individual pieces.

Author Jasmine Hubble believes we'd all have more fun if we could be ready to take a jaunt at a moment's notice, and to that end she's filled her book with clever, lighthearted designs for extremely useful items that are often dual-purpose. More than 20 projects include beach towels and picnic blankets that double as carry sacks; a kid's cap that becomes a little pouch; a fanny pack that transforms into a full-size rain poncho; and a travel pillow that converts into a rest mat. There are also loads of tips on smart packing and on assembling "convenience kits" for traveling (filled with hand-laundry supplies or car-trip stuff, for instance). All the sewing is very easy, and patterns and templates are included. Hubble's credentials say it all: she designs and sells "practical patterns with as few pieces as possible." --Amy Handy

Ms. Hubble has lots of great travel packing tips in this book, including how to tie a sarong. The patterns are intriguing--however, the directions are very sparse, for the most part. If you are not an expert seamstress, you will need help trying to figure out some of the directions. That said, several of the projects in this book can be sewn by the beginner.

Her other books have good patterns too, but even worse directions. Look at this book first before going to the others.

I really enjoy the projects in this book. I have made many of the projects. When I made the travelling pillow that rolls out to a rest mat for my daughter and her friend I used flat sheets that I didn't have fitted shees to match any more. The girls love them. They have taken the pillows on vacation, on over nights and to summer camps. In using the flat sheets, I was able to recycle and save money. The sheets are more durable that some of the fabrics too because they are made that way. I encourage every sewer to buy and use this book. Use your imagination throughout too. The projects and gifts made from this book are originals because you make them. Many people like the personal gift and the thought and time put into it. So go and sew!

In the essays contained in Cravings: A Sensual Memoir, writer and performance artist Jyl Lynn Felman looks at desire not in the abstract, but in the particular: she considers a child's craving for a mother's attention, a daughter's craving for a specific piece of the family china, a lover's craving for her beloved. Felman contextualizes herself as a Jew, a feminist, a lesbian, and a person who grew up in Ohio. She examines how each of these selves experiences desire differently. Cravings is also a memoir of family life, of sibling rivalries that outlast childhood, and of the grief, regret, and anger that a daughter feels because of her parent's death.

                                            Book Description

In this profound and darkly funny collection of essays, Jyl Lynn Felman explores the bittersweet experience of growing up the youngest of three girls in a Jewish American family in Dayton, Ohio. In a family unable to speak about feelings, the Felman sisters found their own ways to break through the silence and rigidity of their parents' religious beliefs and to vie for their mother's attention and love.

As an adult, Felman reckons with her grief over her mother's suffering and eventual death from Parkinson's disease and its destruction of the family. Throughout, she writes of her own cravings in the sensual experience of her childhood—the taste of her mother's cooking, the feel of her touch, and how these memories have driven her adult life.

"The loss of a mother is one of the most profound tragedies a daughter will face. Jyl Lynn Felman explores this territory with remarkable bravery. A stunning memoir.…Cravings is beautifully written and painfully honest. After turning the final page, I was hungry for more."

—Hope Edelman, author of Motherless Daughters

"With her sharp-eyed sensibility and spare, distinctive prose, Felman is always revealing."

Even though the punctuation is unorthodox, this is the way I think sometimes (in fragments). It wasn't distracting or hard for me to understand. I can also closely identify with the emotions brought forth in this text in terms of growing up in the same era and losing a parent, and believe that most "baby boomers" would feel the same way. This was wonderful summer reading!

While Ms. Felman's book is meant as a commeration of the death of her mother, and thus one feels some sympathy, I felt that her book was self-indulgent. Most particularly because of its usage of indecipherable punctuation, (a usage that implies a desrespect for the reader), but also because of the fact that almost every other paragraph seems to be either a request for pity or a request that one concur that the world is a rotten place. In transactional analysis, such cynisism and victimhood is known as "grievance collecting," and one does begin to feel that one is functioning as Ms. Felman's therapist.

I read this book in preparation for a class that I took of Jyl's while I was attending Brandeis, where Jyl teaches (last I heard- I graduated 1999). Because I knew Jyl, I heard her voice in my head reading that unusual puncuation. It makes a lot more sense if you know her. A lot of her personality and individuality came across. Jyl has a amazing style and grace that I admire greatly, and is an excellent professor. She made us write on the spot, and read our stuff aloud right in class. There was always something going on, something emotional and tender- just like in the book. I was at once comfortable and extremely uncomfortable- when it got personal. I began to wonder about my relationship with my two sisters. Definitely an experience and well worth the time to understand the structure of the book.

1 out of 5 stars This book. Is. Hard to read........2000-07-15

The story is compelling but I can't make it past the first 50 pages because of the way the author puntuates. Her writing style is very distracting. I do not recomend this book.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Powerful Jewish women's experience.......1999-03-29

Jyl Felman is an excellent writer who captures very moving and powerful experiences in an economical style that held my attention and had me wanting more. Ms. Felman juggles many emotions in this short work. The reader finds herself dealing with mother/daughter relationships, Jewish history, feminism, lesbianism, the Holocaust, and food. I highly recommend this book.
