Book Description

In his breathtaking debut, The View From Here, Brian Keith Jackson took us inside the heart of black family life in the rural South. Now, in a novel that resonates with pure emotion, he sends photographer Jeremy Bishop back to Elsewhere, Louisiana, for the funeral that marks the end of his father's life -- and the true beginning of his own.

His grandmother, Mama B, called him Patience. Jeremy was, she said, the most agreeable child. He would have liked to tell her that, even while growing up, his hidden wants festered deep inside him. His mother died just hours after his birth, and he was raised by Mama B and his Aunt Jess after his father disappeared. Even after his dad returned one day with his new family, Jeremy kept his distance. But it is a decade later, and Jeremy, now a successful New York photographer, gets a phone call from Louisiana. It is time for Jeremy Bishop to journey the long way home to help bury his father. In the graveyard where his father's body will be laid to rest; in a stranger's appearance at the wake; in a suicide; a murder; and finally inside a cardboard box that had belonged to his father, Jeremy will find himself in ways he never imagined. Conjuring Jeremy's youth in flashbacks as textured as the denim patch on his grandmother's rocking chair, Jackson weaves together past and present in a novel at once astonishing and universally human.

4 out of 5 stars An Introspective Journeyý.......2003-04-23

Walking Through Mirrors by Brian Keith Jackson is a heartwarming journey of self discovery for Jeremy Bishop, a successful photographer who returns home to Elsewhere, Louisiana to bury his estranged father. Jeremy, nicknamed Patience by his paternal grandmother, Mama B, revisits his past by raising questions to puzzling childhood memories such as his parent's relationship, his untimely birth, his maternal grandparent's abandonment of him, and his relationship with distant father. By the end of the story, we meet an eclectic cast of characters who answer all of Jeremy's questions and shed light for the reader to understand the meaning behind the novel's title. To walk through mirrors is an expression of doing the impossible...it is to look at things from the other side of the mirror and see more than one's own reflection.

This is a complex story with multiple layers of family secrets and hidden agendas. In this single visit home, Jeremy unknowingly has to reconcile his role as a son, stepson, grandson, brother, and nephew. He must seek redemption from those he loves and who love him. The writing style of Brian Keith Jackson is mature, fresh, and alluring-a definite notch above his contemporary peers. I loved "The View From Here" and enjoyed "The Queen of Harlem". He has definitely earned a place on my favorite author list - a feat that is not easily managed. I strongly recommend this novel and I am looking forward to his next body of work.

I really struggled with the rating of this book. This book did not grab my attention, nor did it demand a quick read. However, it was an excellent story about a father and son relationship. I felt the story line was excellent. Being a step-mother, this book helped me to understand the point of view from the child's perspective and the impact of not having a father around can have on a child. Once I got deep into the story line, I was eager to find resolution betweeen the father and son. I was glad to understand that in life, we sometimes have to "Walk Through Mirrors."

5 out of 5 stars Lemmetellyasom'n, this is a 10.......2000-10-31

Jeremy, called Patience by his grandmother Mama B, is the focal character in this extraordinary story. This book traces the estranged relationship Jeremy had with his father, who has just died. This causes Jeremy to travel back to Elsewhere, Louisiana to face his dead father, family and friends, who he has kept at a distance since moving to New York to become a successful professional photographer. In his journey home, Jeremy takes us on a trip through his childhood (which will cause the reader to go back down memory lane) to the present and inturn discovers secrets to self discovery that he has never known. Brian Keith Jackson's writing is soooo powerful I could not believe someone his age was able to write with so much depth. The writing reminded me of Zora Neale Hurston. The authors of this day and age are not writing at this caliber. Wonderful story. Thanks Mr. Jackson for telling Jeremy's story. Fan for life.

Brian Keith Jackson's astounding second novel isn't on sale in European bookstores. IT SHOULD BE! Such a rare and insightful tale of father-son relationships is relevant to us all; it should be available to readers worldwide. My thanks to Mr Jackson for writing it. My thanks to Amazon.com for delivering it!

        Book Description

Ismene is the last survivor of her family, cursed by the gods and man. She is fleeing from her tyrannical uncle, Creon, taking shelter with Tieresias, the blind prophet who lives in the hills above the city-state of Thebes. Tieresias sends her to hide in the one place Creon cannot follow—the Kingdom of Death. Once there, Ismene is reunited with her father, Oedipus, as well as her mother and siblings. Sheltered by Hades, King of Death, she falls in love with this dark god. By the time she is recalled to the earth by Tieresias, she has accepted the fact that her destiny is unique and will redeem the honor of her family.

        5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Journey.......2006-02-17

Poor Ismene. The sole survivor of her once-proud-and-noble-now-disgraced family, she is being pursued by cruel Uncle Creon. Where to go? What to do? Advised by her friend and mentor, the blind prophet Tieresias, that her only hope lies in the Underworld, she agrees to undertake the perilous journey. She crosses the River Styx, disembarks, and finds a beautiful young woman rushing onto the boat and joyfully embracing her mother. It's Persephone, beginning her annual six-month reunion with Demeter and the earth.

Entering the Kingdom of Death, Ismene finds the abandoned Hades lonely, mournful, and dejected. Remembering the scene at the boat landing, she realizes that although Hades has won the hand of Persephone, at least part-time, he did not win her heart. This insight leads to an unlikely love affair between the human in distress and the god in despair in the least romantic of all settings. Impossible? Not in the skillful hands of writer and playwright Christine Emmert. Somehow she convinces us that not only is romance possible in the Underworld, but it can soar to heights unimagined by mere humans.

Part myth, part fantasy, this book can be read on many levels. Lovers of mythology will enjoy the what-if quality of extending a well-known myth, and lovers of fantasy will enjoy Emmert's use of strong visuals to enhance the setting. In addition, book club members could have a fine time exploring the possibilities for all of us who dare to set aside our fears and explore the darkness.

5 out of 5 stars a lyrical and erotic retelling of an old Greek myth.......2005-11-12

The stories of the Greek myths have passed down to us for thousands of years: myths originally told around a fire and passed through the memory of generations before they were written down. Long after the last bard died, this particular legend of the enchanting young Ismene is told most beautifully again. For this reader, not knowing the legend, I read it as if it were the first time told, and I was around a fire at night thousands of years ago, listening to it chanted to a Greek harp. Another world opened to me.

Ismene is the young, tragic daughter of Oedipus, hunted by the present king who wishes to extinguish her as the last living member of her family. Her protector sends her from his cave high in the mountains to the only place the king cannot find her: the world of Hell. There she finds the shades of her family but more, finds love with the god of death, Hades. This love affair is strange and wonderfully told. Send back again earth, she is now a stranger among the living who has many more adventures to live before she can join her beloved in the underworld.

Erotic and lyrical, told in the simple manner of an ancient legend, the story unfolds page after page, in which the virginal girl becomes a woman. There is a wry humor in the tone of the living, the shades, and the immortal gods who find much to complain of in their present states and also some phrases of great beauty and mysticism.

ISMENE belongs in every library for adults and literary adolescents, on private, public and school library shelves. We can hope the author will bring more legends from this ancient world to life so that we can, in our complicated lives, awaken the time when gods and men walked barefoot on the earth together, the wind and sea were mysteries, and the veil between the natural and the supernatural was blown away.

The author is a playwright, poet and actress; this is her first published novel and grew out of a theater piece about Ismene; it was too short a piece to contain the whole story, so this book was fortunately born.

5 out of 5 stars Finding the Authentic Self.......2005-11-12

ISMENE gives homage to Joseph Campbell who advised us to follow our bliss. Here is the fantasy of one of the characters from greek myth who makes a journey of discovery which enhances not only herself , but also her family (cursed through time). The
narrative is the story, but there is an underlying pulse of emotions that propel Ismene to her place in her world.

5 out of 5 stars The long awaited view of the "other " 5 clans.......1998-09-12

If you've been looking for a view of the clans Diamond Shark, Ghost Bear, Nova Cats, Smoke Jaguar, or steel Viper, this is your best bet. Included are extensive summaries of the key battles of the 3050 invasion, occupying unit lists, and a pair of new mechs for each clan. The 8 color artwork pages are spectacular, although the black-and-white illustrations are substandard for FASA. Though all of the 'mech stats are also listed in T.R. 3058, the artwork in Invading Clans is superior. A good buy for the clanner in all of us.

4 out of 5 stars Jaguars and Vipers and Bears, oh my!.......1998-04-08

Chock-full of facts, lore, history and of course new Mechs, it's an indispensable sourcebook for Aspiring Jaguars, Vipers, Bears, and Cats. Diamond Sharks will be disappointed because of the short shrift given by the author to the composition of their military. The Mechs contained therein can be found in the 3058 Technical Readout so the book is really aimed at roleplayers. There is enough lore in the book to add to the memory banks of any 'Tech aficionado. However I do believe that Some of the Clans, particularly Smoke Jaguar, deserved a sourcebook of their own.

The titular neighborhood of Frank Pellegrino's Rao's: Recipes from the Neighborhood is Manhattan's East Harlem, home to an Italian immigrant population. The area also boasts Rao's, Pellegrino's Southern Italian restaurant that was discovered by local "worthies" and is now New York City's toughest reservation. The book, a follow-up to the bestselling Rao's Cookbook, offers 125 recipes for the kind of fare offered Rao's, and by Pellegrino's extended family and neighbors--dishes like Pizza Rustica, Penne Rigate with Cauliflower, Veal Milanese, and My Mother's Stuffed Calamari. This deeply satisfying, utterly unpretentious cooking is easy to do, but must be handled with care to avoid debasing an already hybrid cuisine. The book scores in this, offering exemplary versions of Old-to-New World dishes, and is neighborhood-authentic down to the use of American convenience products like garlic powder. Readers will also relish the wide recipe range, which includes sweets such as Simple Ricotta Cheesecake and Noni's Chocolate Ravioli, as well as Pellegrino's headnotes, which reveal who made what when. (Of the contributor of Wedding Soup, for example, he says, "his grandmother and my grandmother ... both came to America in 1911 in the same ship.") This flavorsome background, plus homey photos and other memorabilia like Our Kitchen Table make this modest book particularly welcome. --Arthur Boehm

        5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-01-09

I love this book! It brings me right back to Brooklyn, and reminds me so much of my roots. In our home there was always cooking, good food and lots of family and friends. These recipes are the same good cooking, simple Italian cooking to enjoy. I also have Rao's other cookbook which I also enjoy. Bought this for my son for Christmas and then had to get one for myself. Get this and enjoy!

        5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down..........2006-03-21

This book completely revitalized my interest in cooking. I was growing tired of the highly complex, noveau recipes requiring obscure ingredients, and the end result was hardly worth the wait. Instead, these recipes accentuate the essence of Italian cooking - simplicity and quality ingredients. A great meal doesn't have to take all day to prepare and cook, and shouldn't require more than a handful of ingredients. Most of these recipes can be prepared with minimal effort after work and are great for family style cooking all week long, leaving great left-overs that only taste better with each re-heating. Cancel the magazine subscriptions and try this book. You will not be dissapointed with these recipes that haven't fallen short for over 100 years. Even the mediocre recipes are better than most.

4 out of 5 stars Rao's Recipes from the Neighborhood.......2005-08-26

If you love Italian food and love to cook, nothing beats the
Rao's cook books. The recipes in this book are quite simple and easy to follow and even a novice cook can make a great meal.

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse inside one of NYC's legendary eateries.......2004-12-20

Rao's has been a top eatery in New York City for decades. It's atmosphere was, is, and always will be a "rat pack" type of atmosphere, with a long line of people hoping for a seat to open up in one of the most intimate in-demand spots in the city.

Now, co-owner and actor Frank Pellegrino has put his restaurants' most popular dishes in book form, so that people crazy about traditional Italian fare can take a stab at making it themselves.

Boasting friends like actor Danny Aiello (who wrote the book's preface) and former New York Times food critic Mimi Sheraton (who wrote the forward), Pellegrino's book is part cookbook, part family album, as he takes a look at his childhood, his family, and the part that Rao's, owned then by his aunt and uncle Anna and Vincent Rao, played as he grew up around the neighborhood in it's East Harlem location.

The book is divided into chapters, each covering a specific type of food, and each is filled with family photographs, reminiscences from other members of his family and Frank's wide array of friends, as well as the recipes that made Rao's famous, sure to set the mouth watering. Some of the dishes Rao's is renowned for, such as Fettuccine Alfredo, boiled stuffed lobster, and the restaurants well-known homemade Marinara Sauce, are often less complicated than one tasting the dishes at the restaurant would probably believe. Each of those recipes, as well as all of the others, are explained in enough detail that it should be fairly simple to make near-Rao quality Italian fare in the average kitchen.

Although a bit pricey for its smallish size (a mere 197 pages), the book is nonetheless well worth it's price. The simple step-by-step instructions make this a great book for the beginning Italian cook, or for that matter, an experienced one as well.

If you're looking to take a stab at authentic Italian cuisine, New York Style, then look no further. Pellegrino offers up a cookbook filled with food, family, and style just too hard to resist.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey of Italian-American recipes. Pricy.......2004-12-18

`Rao's Recipes From the Neighborhood' appears to be a publication by restaurateur / actor Frank Pellegrino of his family's scant 196 page cooking scrapbook from the last two generations of the Rao / Pellegrino family which have lived in New York City, for a list price of $40 bucks a pop.

Before you get the notion that this is a cranky review of negatives and hit the `Not Influenced' button, let me say that this book really succeeds in giving us something interesting and useful, if not entirely new. It is certainly good enough to give it four stars, and the only thing keeping it from five is its relatively high price.

On the face of it, this appears to be a brand name rip-off, cashing in on the success of the restaurant, the original cookbook of restaurant recipes, and the Rao line of supermarket products. However, this book is not similar to other culinary publishing rip-offs such as the Alton Brown blank book and the Mark Bittman subdivision of his book into three booklets.

I will say that St. Martin's Press has used the lucre they expect to get for this price to good effect. The design of the book is crisp, the photography is good, all photographs are CAPTIONED and appear at an appropriate place in the text, and not much of the precious 196 pages are taken up with poorly written family stories.

The first thing to notice is that these are NOT recipes from the restaurant, Rao. They are recipes from Frank Pellegrino's friends and family labeled in a 72-point font with the name of the famous restaurant and forwarded by family friend and restaurant reviewer Mimi Sheraton, who put Rao's on the map with a three star rating in a New York Times restaurant review. So, this book is borrowing luster from the restaurant rather than serving as a promotion for same restaurant. The restaurant doesn't need the business, as I suspect not even Donald Trump or Bill Clinton could get a reservation at one of their eight (8) tables.

And, the recipes are really very good and most are exceptionally simple, but many are sophisticated when they have to be. This simplicity is all to a good cause, since the heart of the Italian genius with food is to create a pantry of exceptional ingredients, then don't mess them up. (Pellegrino does an homage to this principle in his introductory section on pantry items.) Sometimes, you can only appreciate this quality when you look at non-Italian interpreters such as London's River Café and Jamie Oliver. The simplicity really shines in recipes such as the Puttanesca sauce where the constant problem of not burning the garlic is solved simply with nary a need for a cautionary note by simply not adding the garlic until after the anchovies and olives have been added. As no ingredient is left out, I am hard pressed to believe this will taste any worse than the very fussy (but very good) version from `Cooks Illustrated' magazine.

When a cookbook is good, that quality usually shows itself on the first or second recipe and this book proves this rule. Even though this is a book of `Italian-American' recipes, the very first recipe is a perfect implementation of a classic unfussy Italian `Brodo di Pollo' which is made with coarsely chunked vegetables, is simmered for a scant hour and 15 minutes, and retains the poached chicken meat for some other purpose. The recipe even includes an optional enhancement I do not recall seeing elsewhere, with a thickening of the stock by adding a puree of the cooked carrots, leeks, and celery.

Another application of pure Italian culinary tradition is in the recipe for the wedding soup, where each green is carefully blanched separately, blanching water is saved as a later ingredient, cannellini beans are carefully pureed, and savories are gently sautéed, all before making the final assembly. Marcella Hazan could not have done it better. Aside from the opening chapter on soups, there are chapters on Salads; Egg Dishes; Pizza, Calzone, and Bread; Pasta, Rice, Polenta, and Sauces; Seafood; Chicken; Meats; Vegetables; and Desserts. While the bread chapter does not match the depth of understanding provided by a specialist's book by, for example, Peter Reinhart or Carol Field, it is really pretty good.

The biggest question one faces when considering getting this book is `Do I really need another Italian or Italian-American cookbook?' There is simply very little here which is new. I would definitely recommend this book in preference to Rocco DiSpirito's book he did with his mom. A perfect example is their Puttanesca recipes which Pellegrino does in 15 minutes with basic ingredients and which Rocco does in 20 minutes, needing a prepared sauce that takes additional time to make.

And, I would consider this book the equal to John Mariani's book as a source for `Italian-American' recipes (but without Mariani's excellent historical perspective and wine notes). It is also as good as `Eleanora's Kitchen' by Eleanora Scarpetta, and maybe just a touch better, as it is a choral work rather than just a solo effort. As a definitive presentation of `Italian-American' cuisine, it is not quite as good as Lydia Bastianich's excellent PBS series tie-in book. When I compare the Italian-American classic sausage and peppers from all books, I find Bastianich' version to be by far the most tasty (although I have a sneaky suspicion that her recipe has more to do with her northern Italian origin than it has to do with Mulberry street in Manhattan).

If you have no `Italian-American' cookbooks, this volume is an excellent purchase, especially if you can get a good discount.

            5 out of 5 stars A life saver.......2007-03-20

I was freaking out when I found out my new baby(pup) is deaf. "Living With a Deaf Dog" was a life saver. I felt so more at ease after reading the first few pages. I also had family and friends that interact with Kiko read it. Kiko was my wild child and is now on her way to being a well behaved adult.

5 out of 5 stars So much help!.......2007-03-09

This book tremendously helped me understand my 3 yr. old deaf dog, Patch so much better. I didn't understand some of his behaviors and I could not find helpful books at the library. From the author's stories, tips, and advice, I have a much better understanding of what he goes through and why he exhibits some behaviors. I've had him for a year with trial especially with walking him. Since I've read this book, he and I have a much better understanding of each other. He is so willing to learn, the tips the author gave proved to be so useful! Great book! Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Understanding deafness in dogs.......2006-03-01

This book truelly provides an insight into deaf dogs and ways to assist ones communication problems. At last I have found a book that shares my awareness and provides deaf dogs with a chance in life for survival.

            3 out of 5 stars Eh...kind of unnecessary........2005-10-31

If you just adopted a deaf dog, it's nice to know that there are other people who have successfully trained deaf dogs. You'll get that from this book, but otherwise this book is kind of unnessary. There are online resources to get you started with training tips (like getting a deaf dog's attention by flicking the lights). But beyond that, training is just the same as with a hearing dog. I don't want to un-recommend it, but it's just not entirely necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Living With A Deaf Dog.......2005-09-30

Great book! Full of help and hope for owners of deaf dogs. Everything is ready to use and easy to understand!

This book is a part of my Flow Blue research library. Jeffrey Snyder is a leading authority in Flow Blue collecting. His descriptions are clear and precise. His photography is fantastic.
The prices listed in this book should only be used for insurance purposes as the Flow Blue collecting phase swings with decorating fashions and colors of the times. In reality, you can find prices much more affordable than suggested in ths book.
Add this to your collection and you will enjoy it for years to come!

The Atlantic Crossing Guide has established itself as the standard reference for any sailor planning an Atlantic passage within an area bounded by Scotland, South Africa, Grenada, and Newfoundland. It is packed with advice on choosing and equipping a suitable boat, route planning, navigation, safety, and port details. This third edition reflects the continuing development of cruising yachts and their gear, as well as the many changes in shoreside facilities. The section on passages and landfalls has been expanded and is illustrated with many new charts. And, for the first time, the guide covers South Atlantic routes, harbors, and anchorages.

A successful illustrator of children's books, Ilya Kabakov rose to international prominence in the 1970s when he became the leading member of a group of dissident artists known as the Moscow Conceptualists. Art critic Amei Wallach follows the important steps in Kabakov's development as an artist, from his colored-pencil narrative works of the 70s to his "total installations" in the 80s that consisted of, among other things text, sounds, photographs, illustrations, kitchen items, and garbage. In the 90s, Kabakov's work has been seen at the Museum of Modern Art.

                  Book Description

In The Walking Artist, Hamish Fulton documents his peripatetic self and its relationship to the world through which it moves. Fulton--born in London in 1946--initially studied sculpture, but in 1969 he turned to an artistic activity based on walking. Since then he has continued to occupy this utterly unique position within the field of contemporary art, marking himself as a visionary and a true original. Fulton's work consists in walking across various landscapes, and The Waling Artist documents various ''walking pieces'' of his from over the years, from the early 1970s until the present day. Included are walks through terrain like hills, mountains, and forests, in area as diverse as southern England, Peru, Bolivia, northern California, central Australia, Nepal, Japan, Baffin Island in Arctic Canada, and France.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Peripatetic Ode To Exotic Landscapes.......2002-03-06

Hamish Fulton, the walking artist, is not a diarist. Far from it! Rather than being concerned with the facts of his adventures on foot through some of the most interesting and ruggedly beautiful landscapes on Earth, Fulton is instead preoccupied with a more rarified distillation of his RESPONSE to those landscapes and the act of traversing them. Thus the texts, wall paintings and photographs that have been included in this volume are better understood as fragments of experience represented iconographically in place of systematic description.and detailed observation. To quote Angela Vettese (who translated the text from German and contributed a brief, fascinating essay at the end of the book), "Fulton's actual concern...is that eternal dilemma arising from the gulf between the fundamental loneliness of the individual, the incommunicability of what he experiences and the equally deep-rooted need to communicate his experiences and to share them with others." Out of the tension this dialectic inevitably imposes on us all comes Walking Artist; a superb presentation of one man's struggle to resolve the riddle artistically.

Walking Artist is a unique, dare I say joyous, offering that is grounded photographically. Fulton is an exceptionally able photographer and as a collection of images, this volume will not disappoint. But he is also gifted with an ability to represent his perpetual (re-)discovery of the world about him more abstractly in drawing, painting and visually dramatic text. The combination of concrete photographic image coupled with these other media conveys tremendous creative energy. And creates a visual gestalt that really does have a way of taking you into this man's world as he wanders the globe in search of truth and light. And, perhaps most importantly, meaning. Hamish Fulton walks the land alone but brings us along after the fact so effectively that it is difficult to believe we were not in fact with him on his wondrous peregrinations.

                    Book Description

The fictitious hero of this 1984 installation is a lonely dreamer who develops an impossible project: to fly alone in cosmic space. But this dream is also an individual appropriation of a collective Soviet project and the official Soviet propaganda connected to it. Having built a makeshift slingshot, the hero apparently flies through the ceiling of his shabby room and vanishes into space. The miserable room and the primitive slingshot suggest the reality behind the Soviet utopia, in which where cosmic vision and the political project of the Communist revolution are seen as indissoluble.

The Man who Flew into Space from His Apartment also raises questions of authorship in modernity. All of Kabakov's work is made in the name of other, fictitious artists. This reveals a hidden rule of the modern art system: only an artist who doesn't want to be an artist or who doesn't even know that he is an artist is a real artist--just as only an artwork that does not look like an artwork is a real artwork. The installation is a narrative, the documentation of a fictitious event.

                      Book Description

The Struggle with one's own memories, especially those of an unofficial artist in the last decades of the Soviet Union, has been the dominating theme of Ilya Kabakov (born 1933 in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine) since his 1987 move to the west. Kabakov invites our voyeuristic gaze to enter a private sphere and reminds us of the ugly, depressing features of communism's decline, of the terror and one's neighbors' denunciations. Still today the reason behind Kabakov's artistic production has remained a recapitulation of his own past that is closely linked to the phenomena of disintegration and loss of meaning in Soviet civilization.

Description: In their first collaboration, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov built an immense, spiraling multi-story canvas-and-wood structure lit from within like a Chinese lantern. Inside, the Kabakovs installed 65 projects that ranged from the sublime to the common-place and included proposals for gaining self-awareness by becoming a beggar or an angel; for punishing household objects for our mistfortunes; for redistributing the world's energy supply with space-based transmitters; for "cloud management" through a system of pumps and pipes; and even for taking a vacation without ever leaving your bed. Through photographs and essays by the artists, this publication documents the development and realization of The Palace of Projects.

                            Book Description

This collection of nine theatrical projects created by the team of Ilya and Emilia Kabakov explores the artistic process of two leading figures in contemporary art.

Since their immigration from Russia to the West in 1987, conceptual artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov have produced magnificent installations in a wide variety of forums: a circus stage, public square, orchestral hall, opera houses, and museums. Ilya and Emilia Kabakov's themes range from the playful to the utopian, but each reflects the artists' perspective on life in the Soviet Union. The nine projects presented in this exquisitely produced volume allow readers to observe ideas evolving from quickly sketched concepts to full-blown fantasies of enormous proportion. Drawings, watercolors, plans, models and photographs of the productions themselves are interspersed with commentary about each installation. A lengthy interview with Ilya Kabakov, who was declared one of the "ten greatest living artists" by ARTnews magazine, completes this wonderful compilation of genius at work.

                              Book Description

Who is the greatest? Who today can define himself as the greatest? Ilya Kabakov, father of Russian Conceptualism, and his wife Emilia, ask these very questions in Where is Our Place? A project about the paradoxical contrast between contemporary and past art, this book meditates on the inner workings of the art system and artistic experience, identifying the importance of and need for a new critical and ethical awareness in our reception of art. Here different eras exist simultaneously in an incongruous art museum outside of time: contemporary, past, and perhaps also an imaginary projection into the future.

                                Book Description

Pavel Pepperstein, one of the best-known artists and authors of Russia's younger generation, represents an important link between the elder exponents of Moscow Conceptualism and the young artists of his homeland. While working for the Kunsthaus Zug, Switzerland, from 1998 to 2002, he invited select Russian guests to take part in exhibitions within the context of an unusual collection project. His invitees included the groups Inspection Medical Hermeneutics (which he helped found) and Russland, plus Viktor Pivovarov, Viktor Mazin, Boris Groys, and Ilya Kabakov. Zug thus became a meeting place for Russian artists and their friends, as well as an increasingly interested and enthusiastic audience--an excellent example of sustainable cultural exchange. Pepperstein himself normally painted without preliminary sketches and directly on museum walls, creating brilliant pictures that were painted over after each show. Only in a local schoolhouse, bank, and prison were walls made available for the creation of permanent works which would comprise an expanded, publicly accessible museum collection. Swiss photographer Guido Baselgia documented the successful project over a period of five years.

Ranging from 1969 through the early 1990s, the works in this volume have been rarely or never seen before in this country. Ilya Kabakov's installations are complex environments, which he calls "total installations," that immerse viewers in other worlds: communal Soviet apartments, the studio of an untalented artist, or an old Russian school. Humorous and often melancholy narratives in the form of texts on paintings or drawings add to the poignancy of his work.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Moore Campbell's Masterpiece.......2002-10-07

Once in a great while - about as often as Halley's Comet - a book comes along which stirs the soul and rattles your heart; a book which can transcend race, gender, age, place and time. This is such a book. Moore-Campbell is a magnificent writer; her verses poetic, her theme universal. Her autobiogrophy tells the story of growing up black and young without a full-time father, and the affects it can have on a child. It's not just her story; she shares this life with her cousin Michael (again, young and black without a full-time father), their Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunts, and assorted 'father figures': Dads, Uncles, Reverands, Neighbors. One child (BeBe) can learn to adapt graciously, while the other (Michael) has a tougher time, as they each learn difficult 'truths' about their patriarchy. Beautifully written, the reader hangs on every word, as this wonderful story unfolds.

This is a wonderful book and I recommend it to any one out there living or growing up with and without a father.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A Powerful Book.......2000-03-20

Bebe Moore Campbell writes from personal expierance in the novel, Sweet Summer. Campbell tells about growing up as an African American girl living in the South during the 60's. Through this story I learned the prejudice of racism, the struggle of growing up with a divoraced family, and the will to live life. This story touched my heart, because it provided me to a differnt point of view about life.

This was a well written story detailing accounts of her childhood and early adulthood with class and style. BeBe made me think twice about the men in my life who were ordinary superstars. kudos!

I enjoyed reading "Sweet Summer" so much that I had to share it with all my coworkers that wanted to listen. This book was really easy reading. I follwed the storyline as if it was my own life story. It was especially interesting because the storyline dealt with a familiar place, Northeastern North Carolina, my homestead. Anyone in Northeastern North Carolina that has not read this book needs to stop what they are doing now and purchase this book or go to their local library and read it.
