Book Description

The Barbary War - the first American war against Libya - was the first war waged by the United States outside national boundaries after gaining independence and unification of the country. The four Barbary States of North Africa - Morocco, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli - had plundered seaborne commerce for centuries. This was piracy on an extraordinary scale: they controlled all trading routes through the Barbary waters and North Africa: demanding ransom and booty for safe passage.
In 1801 the newly elected President Jefferson ordered a naval and military expedition to North Africa in order to put down regimes that endorsed piracy and slavery. The Pasha of Tripoli declared war on the United States. Under the leadership of Commodores Richard Dale and Edward Preble, the US Navy blockaded the enemy coast and engaged in close, bitterly contested gunboat actions. On 16 February 1804 LT Stephen Decatur led 74 volunteers into Tripoli to burn the captured American frigate The Philadelphia. British Admiral Lord Nelson called the raid "the most daring act of the age". In 1805 Marines stormed the Barbary pirates' harbor fortress stronghold of Derna (Tripoli), commemorated in the Marine Corp Hymn invocation "To the Shores of Tripoli."
The US Navy troops were recalled before they could secure their gains, but returned after the War of 1812. Their success then won worldwide admiration for the Americans and their Navy. They marked the way for the European nations to finally quash the Barbary States and end the piracy.

This event marks the true birth of the US Navy and Marines and is ever remembered in the Marines' battle hymn.

5 out of 5 stars The unmatched bravery of the Navy of a new republic.......2007-03-05

This is a terrific book about the long forgotten Naval war against the Islamic pirates of North Africa. It recalls our Navy's first heroes, particularly Stephen Decatur. It should remind everyone that the history of conflict between the civilized world and Islam goes back many centuries. The book documents conflicts between those who recognize the situation for what it is and seek to end it by force, and the diplomats who seek to appease the Barbary pirates. Not surprisingly, then as now, the Navalists were right. Altogether, this is a well-told, well-documented book about the conflict of civilized nations, with one of the world's longest running pathologies.

Book Description

Mike Lovett rents a room in a Brooklyn boarding house with the intention of writing a novel. Wounded during World War II, Lovett is an amnesiac, and much of his past is a secret to himself. But Lovett's housemates have secrets of their own. As these mysterious figures vie for Lovett's allegiance, Barbary Shore plays havoc with our certainties, combining Kafkaesque unease with Orwellian paranoia and delivering its effects with a power that Mailer has made all his own.

3 out of 5 stars Mailer captured the feeling, the fear of the time.......2007-08-29

When we begin comparing different books by an author, we can run into problems. Each book, I believe, should be judged on its own. While Barbary Shore was certainly not my all time favorite book in the entire world, I could not put it down, either. Mailer's use of language, and his word choices, added to the overall feel of the novel. The feeling during the height of the McCarthy Era was one of caution and fear. I believe that he captured these things through his language choices as well as through the characters and their actions. Is this one of Mailer's best books? Probably not. I heard him speak several months ago in California. He was funny, charming, and he said that he believed Ancient Evenings was one of his favorites. At times, during Barbary Shore, it is a bit difficult to figure out what is going on, but that's what compelled me to continue with the book. I had to know. Mailer brought these characters to life, particularly with his wonderful descriptions. It is a book I would read again, and it will occupy a space on one of my many bookshelves. It was not, however, a fast paced book. It took me a bit of time to read. In fact, I had finished several other books in the time it took me to finish this one, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. There were things he wrote in this book, too, that ring true even today, particularly at the beginning of chapter 24, when he discusses the big, rich companies, the machine that makes capitalism go and grow, and the workers. "The man grew smaller and the machine grew larger,..." he writes. Isn't this true today? It's worth a first, careful read.

1 out of 5 stars Mailer's Only True Prose Disaster in a 50 Year Career.......2004-10-13

Mailer's second novel is that rare thing, a dull book. Overwhelmed with the success of Naked and the Dead, Mailer sought to write a Kafkaesque political thriller set against the
pulsing paranoia of the fifties, and finds himself tripped up by haphazard plotting, grating dialogue, and wooden characters. The dialogue, it needs to be said, is the stiffest assortment of cold war banter one could imagine from a political novel set in the 1950s; there is a particular failure to connect the various political disillusionments that abound through these pages with the chronically self-loathing slouching that goes on as the men and women schlep room to room in the story's shabby rooming house. Had this been an absurdist comedy, one might have gotten an appreciative chuckle if not a belly laugh by what Mailer was doing ,but this is played straight, serious as tax audit, and there is little air in the private hells each chapter outlines. The novel is remarkable if only because it wound up not being the career killer for Mailer that this sort of graceless and pretentious effort would mean for a less resilient talent. But Resilient Mailer is, as his steely production following this lethargic parable evinces.

It's interesting to note that he refers to his subsequent collection and memoir "Advertisements for Myself" as a "biography of a style", detailing his struggle to absorb and transcend his influences with a voice that was his alone , a style that would be his instrument his brilliant efforts to provoke and inspire and anger his readers.

He has particularly moving and insightful things to say about the struggle he had in the writing and rewriting of "Barbary Shore", and in retrospect we witness in the book a great writer choking on his ambition as he wrestles with a set of ideas he cannot yet put into a beautifully writ set of paragraphs. Mailer would soon develop one of the best prose styles of his time, but suffice to say that he hadn't yet come up with a set of nuances uniquely his own when this book emerged.

2 out of 5 stars A good idea gone awry.......2002-08-25

McLeod is a man with a shady past. A former Communist Party official, he is now residing in a rooming house in Brooklyn just after the end of World War II. McLeod is being tailed by Hollingsworth, also a resident in the same establishment. Hollingsworth suspects McLeod of too many things and desires to interrogate and entrap him. The novel's narrator, Mike Lovett, is a disabled war veteran suffering from a severe case of amnesia. He just wants to be left alone to write his novel. He instead becomes entangled with these two gentlemen as well as with the lonely, slatternly landlady and her annoying little daughter. A down-and-out alcoholic woman also rents a room here. She also knows of some horrible secrets in McLeod's past and aims to exact some measure of revenge on him.

So goes Norman Mailer's novel of cold war intrigue. The premise of a man's radical past catching up with him and his desparate attempts to come to terms with the choices he made in his life is a good one. However, Mailer deals with these issues and his characters in an overly shallow manner. The characters come across more like types, e.g. the earnest radical socialist, rather than like real people. Mike, whose personality is largely one-dimensional, is merely a plot device, a medium through whom the other characters interact. Mike's character could easily have been eliminated. The story could have been far more interesting and even devastating were it told from the point of view of McLeod. What I believe Mailer meant to be the centerpiece of the novel, McLeod's lengthy speech on the nature of revolutionary socialism vs. state capitalism, is merely boring and flat. Too bad Mailer could not follow through on an otherwise excellent germ of an idea.

3 out of 5 stars The Most Talked About Novel of 1949.......2002-06-29

Hard to believe, but when this book first appeared (it was Mailer's second novel), it was the most talked about novel of the year. What Mailer attempts here is a spooky, Kafkaesque atmosphere centered around a gloomy Brooklyn boarding house full of mysterious tenents - one of whom the young narrator fixates upon, and who turns out to be the instigator (following Stalin's orders) of the murder of Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. This theme attaches the novel more to the earlier half of the century rather than the later, because its concerns - a sense of loss and bewilderment at how the radical dreams of the century's start had completely failed to find any positive fruition - were rapidly losing their hold on American intellectuals of the post-war world. Barbary Shore does impart convincingly a sense of loss - of ideals disabused - and in that sense the book is a kind of clumsy version of The God That Failed.

The problem with the book is in its execution. The Kafka atmosphere seems half-baked, even provincial - Mailer seems to have "dipped in" to Kafka rather than having actually enjoyed reading him. The whole episode of the mysterious tenent and the secret he carries - the best part of the book - seemed (to me) constantly hampered by Mailer's poor telling. As a reader I'm not surprised that Mailer more or less gave up fiction and turned to historical novels or journalism for the bulk of his career.

1949 was a bad year for some writers. The other "most talked about" book was John Horne Burns' Lucifer With a Book. Burns had written the first-rate war novel The Gallery, a lyrical piece of prose set in end-of-the-war Naples. But Lucifer With a Book was about the naughty goings-on at a boys' prep school - not something America could handle in 1949. Burns was dunned out of the States, by outraged critics who thought they had been praising a "war novelist," and soon drank himself to death in Europe. At least Mailer found a niche in journalism. Try Mailer's writings on the moon shot, were he's fascinating.

2 out of 5 stars A Shore A Little Too Dry For Its Own Good.......2001-01-06

Starting over with a clean slate is an idea that is looked upon and desired. The concept of Barbary SHore was a brilliant idea for Mailer to attempt writing about. Mike, being an amnesiac wanted to piece his life back together, but could not trust his thoughts and the images that came to his mind. Upon moving into a house with many tenants of diverse personalities, he had the perfect chance to recollect thoughts and concepts.

However, Mailer failed to use the concept effectively. He did use Mike at first to absorb the thoughts and ideas projected by the tenants, but they did not stay with him and did not have a lasting effect on his search for a stable mind. Mailer basically shrugged off a freat opportunity to cause a great conflict of mental confusion in Mike, to strongly contribute to the plot.

Mailer's writing did not help the novel's cause either. His narration became monotonous because of a lack of variation of sentence structure and writing style, along with dragged out descriptions that were not at all exciting to read. Also, the conversations that happened in the novel were boring because of the author's tendencies towards over describing. They were also horribly routine. Basically the writing in the novel was boring. The only interesting aspect of Mailer's writing was his analogies. It was interesting how he related things that were very alike, but not in an obvious manner. But that did not save the novel. Also adding to the monotony of the novel was that it serves more as a declaration of Mailer's political views instead of a statement of emotion. Because of Mailer's rambling no one looking for an inspirational book should seek such in this novel since all it has to offer is political insight. Unfortunately, I was no tseeking any such insight, and was bored by the novel.

4 out of 5 stars The first collection of Xena short stories..........2004-12-07

17 stories by some of the most well known (and not so well known) authors, all set in the Xena universe. Adventures, Gods, magic and wrestling. Most of the stories are good, but you can tell that many of the authors didn't work together. One story says the City of Thebes was long gone, while another said it still existed. And in one story, about the battle of Salamis, Xena CARES about what the Greek Gods think about her. When did Xena care about what ANY God thought about?
So while this might be the first collection, it will also be the last.

this is a very good book, i couldn't put it down. there are lots of short stories in this book, so it doesn't get boring. if you are new to the xena paperbacks, this is the book to get you started.

Whether you liked (cough, cough) the final episode or not; you will love to regain your enjoyment for Xena and Gabrielle in this
collection of short stories. Pretty good. Also: "Damsel in the Rough" by Ann M. Tempesta and "Tropical Storm" by Melissa Good--authors who know how to produce a gutsy warrior babe!

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Xenites Anymore.......2001-11-19

Like many Xenites, I bought this book to read the work of fanfiction bard and series screenplay writer Missy Good, and I wasn't disappointed: Missy's stellar final story in the anthology made it worth the money.
However, I was thrilled to discover that the person picking the anthology entries and the writers submitting the stories were just as spot-on, dead center in their portrayal of Xena and Gabrielle as the best screenwriters and fanfiction bards out there. With the possible exception of the lengthy story involving Joxer (can't recall the name right now), every story gave wonderful new yet insightful glimpses of the characters we know and love. Further, for readers of all types of sword and sorcery fantasy, this book offers believable plotting and emotionally engaging characters.
This is a book that every Xena fan should own and one to pass on to non-Xenites. Spread the word-- this one's not just for Xenites.

                  5 out of 5 stars Xceptional.......2001-09-17

I wasn't ready to let the series go yet. Thankfully Gabby and Xena lived on in this collection of short stories. Any and all XWP fans will love this book!!!

I was pretty excited when the plot began to unfold in the first chapter or two. However, I was repeatedly disappointed in the predictable and cliche progression of the novel. The hero is in trouble, about to be shot when the best friend dives in front of the bullet ....

I enjoyed reading the story, however it felt a little as though the author started off really relishing the tale, but got increasingly tired of telling it as he went on. It seemed to me that just as soon as we settled in and got comfortable with the characters and world, the author wrapped it up with a sudden, rushed, conclusion. Would I recommend buying and reading it? yes. Could it have been a lot more than it was? yes.

5 out of 5 stars New Revised Version.......2005-11-12

I just finished reading this new edition of The New Madrid Run (printed May 2005). The original version was good, but this one is spectacular. I could not put the book down. The dialogue and prose are greatly improved, it flows easier and there is much more detail to the characters and situations. I am already casting the parts in my mind when it gets made into a movie. WAKE UP HOLLYWOOD!!! We have an exciting fast moving and possible tale here, that entertains and makes you think as well. I wouldn't feel ripped off paying money to see this as a film, like I do so many others. I hope Michael Reisig retains some control over the story line and content when they do come knocking on his door. It would be a shame to change a thing.
In the mean time it is a great read, but expect to ignore your life for the duration.

                  5 out of 5 stars post apocalypse?.......2005-07-24

This is an excellent view into a possible future? It is well written and has a pretty good grounding in scientific fact. I only wish that there was a sequel. I would really like to continue to follow the lives of our heroes.

4 out of 5 stars Works for my Husband, Not for Me.......2007-07-02

My husband loves this diet and swears it's the only one that works for him - and it does. But, not for me. I gained weight. When I read a book title Live 4 Your Blood Type, I found out why and tested it to be valid. My husband is blood type A and needs a higher carb diet like Lean Bodies. I am type O and need a higher protien diet - that works for me.

A diet without pre-packaged food takes a bit of work & planning up front. Once you understand it, you really can choose foods & meals that are fairly easy - no, I don't like to cook. BENEFIT is you don't have to wean yourself off pre-packaged food and learn how to fix your own meals at the end of your diet - recipe for failure. Instead you learn as you go - for a lifetime. Although, frozen entrees available at the grocery store would be nice...

REQUEST: Software to design my own meal plans. It should be able to calculate calories, carbs, protien, fat and salt count and % of daily allowance by ingredient and accumulate totals by recipe, meal and day. That would make getting started and staying with it much, much easier. A lot of the suggested foods, recipes and meal plans my husband abolutely will not eat.

4 out of 5 stars Good Diet Book.......2007-06-27

I think a lot of books on dieting copied this guy. I notice a lot of things in Bill Phillips "Fit For Life" are in this book. Somewhat boring but good information. At least he doesn't ask you to go to Europe and buy pills made out of pregnant women's urine, like that one best selling diet book on the market now. Good advice. He does talk a little bit too much about some stupid radio show in Texas that he hosts. Check prices. I got this used for $3.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to educate yourself nutritionally.......2006-07-22

Cliff has been preaching the gospel of using food to activate your metabolism for years. I learned a lot from his program. He has lots of books out there. My favorite is his "Lean Bodies Homestyle Helpings' cookbook. In fact when my best friend or I modify a recipe to reflect Cliff's principles, we refer to it as 'Cliffing it up.' Basically, focus your diet on lean proteins, green fibrous vegetables and avoid things like saturated fats, simple sugars and other simple carbs like refined flours, etc. The result is a 'lean body' that you can be proud of.

5 out of 5 stars Good book, great program!.......2005-02-18

I admit it takes a little doing to get going on this program, but it's worth it! First, read the book. Then, empty your kitchen of the junk food. Then, go to the grocery store and buy healthy foods. After that, you are ready to become a Lean Body.

This is an incredibly sensible, lifelong program that has allowed me to live a "regular" life. As a mom, I'm pleased that I can cook for the whole family with this program, allowing extra treats for my kiddo which give her the fat she needs in her diet. I can even go out to eat if I'm willing to exercise discipline in choosing restaurant foods!

As you're buying this book, also pick up "Lean Bodies Cookbook" to give you a slew of recipes to support your healty lifestyle.

4 out of 5 stars This is a good program.......2002-09-12

In reading reviews of this plan, I have to say I was disappointed in how rigid some people are. The diet works and is much easier if you use your imagination. Until I tried Cliff Sheats' program, I couldn't go a day without something sweet, and I couldn't stay on a diet for more than one or two meals. I'm on day 6 now and haven't had a sweet craving yet, and I've lost 3 pounds. I feel pretty good and by eating something every 2-4 hours I don't feel deprived.

As for no foods being available without having to be cooked, I disagree. I have followed the guidelines, but modified the suggested meals to the foods I enjoy, just keeping in mind a good balance of protein, fat and carbs. If I go over by a few percentage points in one area or another on a given day, it's not a big deal. I do spend more time in the kitchen, but it's only because I'm not ordering from restaurant carry-out.

The program is working for me.

WHAT YOUR DOG IS TRYING TO TELL YOU is an easy to use, easy to read, straightforward and practical guide to canine health. While of course no book can take the place of regular (and emergency if need be) visits to your dog's veterinarian, this book is a great help in deciding what the problem might be and whether it warrants a trip to the vet or whether it's something you can take care of at home (e.g. did the dog vomit because she has parvo or because she ate too much dinner too fast?). The book starts off with a section of symptoms that require emergency care, and includes a handy tear-out reference chart.

The remainder of the book is arranged in sections corresponding with parts of the dog's body, making it easy for the reader to find exactly what she is looking for, from Head and Neck to Tail and Anus. If one's dog is scratching, for example, it could be for any number of reasons other than fleas (what most people think of first when they see a dog scratching). Chapter 6 covers Hair and Skin, including several pages on scratching, which includes constant, rhythmic scratching; intense itching with redness and swelling of a particular area, and so on. The discussion of each symptom includes related symptoms, possible causes, care, and prevention.

There is also a chapter that addresses abnormal behaviors, and several appendices, including Checklist for Good Health, How to Perform a Weekly Home Exam, and Breed Disease Predilections.

WHAT YOUR DOG IS TRYING TO TELL YOU is a marvelous canine health guide for the layman that will provide not only needed medical information but also peace of mind for the dog owner...

This is such a wonderful resourse! I have it on hand at all times for when 'something's just not quite right' with one of my doggies. As has been mentioned, it contains a chapter for every part of your pet. Excessive sratching?: Chapter six has almost 20 pages devoted to hair and skin disorders. Chapter nine lists over twenty pages concerning 'spine, limbs, and paws. And on and on...it literally covers every square inch of your pet. It also contains a handy "Symptoms Quickfinder" chart, and and a great "list of recommended dosages" chart, that gives you dosages for everything from aspirin to Zinc. I could go on and on, but I guarantee, you will never be disappointed you purchased this book!

This is an excellent book. The first two chapters talk about emergency first aid and common behavior problems.

The rest of the book is divided into different sections by body parts (head, eyes, skin, etc). Under each section, different topics are grouped by symptoms instead of disease names, therefore making it easier to to look for answers. It provides a very thorough discussion on symptoms, causes, treatment and prevention in a simple and easy-to-understand manner.

The appendix about health check, over-the-counter medications, herbs and minerals also provides as a good reference.

The dramatic, brutally honest, and ultimately triumphant sequel to the bestselling American Book Award winner Lakota Woman, this book continues Mary Brave Bird's courageous story of life as a Native American in a white-dominated society.

5 out of 5 stars Very Emotional; Very Candid; Very Powerful.......2005-07-22

Most history consists of the actions of royalty and people in power. We know the stories about the lives of the pharoahs but not of common laborers. Until now. This book documents the life, not of a chief, but of an ordinary Native American woman. We see how she lives, how she feels, how she thinks, and she is open in expressing her opinions on political issues as well as cultural and social issues.

In addition to telling the accounts of her life, the author Mary Brave Bird opens up to allow the reader to see deep into her heart and innermost thoughts. She is very candid not only about her thoughts and feelings but about her actions as well. She does not try to hide her faults and describes her own infidelity and irresponsibility without excuses.

While reading the book, one is tempted to judge her. But don't. She must be applauded for being so open and honest.

At one point, she assigns blame to the white man for all the ailments of Indian society. Yet remarkably she knows that more handouts from the government or more government programs will not be the answer. The Indians themselves are the only ones who can lift themselves out of poverty, and she is honest in that her own decisions and her own behavior has prevented her and her children from living better lives.

4 out of 5 stars marred by alcoholism.......2002-08-07

This book is highly readable, but is not a beginning-to-end narrative, so those who pick up the book expecting a simple story will be disappointed.

Yes, it is a book of activism, and there is some feminism. Reservation poverty is described in detail. Domestic abuse and alcoholism also appear here. Plus Sun Dance self-torture. Thankfully, many sweat lodge and cedaring-off descriptions dull down the affect of the more shocking parts of Mary Brave Bird's experiences.

She falls prey to an alcoholic lifestyle inolving "party-ing" until you're either beat up or in jail. She eventually leaves her husband, Sioux medicine man Leonard Crow Dog, and treks across country (with 4 children), moving from women's shelter to homeless shelter, until they all spend a wild three years in Phoenix.

Definitely, the alcoholism mars this narrative, and lowers Mary Brave Bird's credibility. Yes, there are a lot of references to the American Indian Movement's standoff at Wounded Knee. And there's a good chapter about native American traditions with regard to menstruation. And inspiration about fighting for the land.

But I can't help wondering if the sort of hopeless drunken revelry portrayed here typifies ALL reservation Indians, and if so, aren't they in fact contributing to the end of their own culture..? Who's watching all those Indian kids while Mom's on a two day drunk?

In other words, this is a disturbing book. It's good but scandalous reading.

5 out of 5 stars A gripping, touching account of life on the "rez".......1999-03-24

I read Ohitika Woman a few months before I read Lakota Woman; this was the first Native autobiography I ever read. To respond to an earlier review, the book did reiterate things covered in Lakota Woman, but that is neccesary if people read this one first as I did. I spent some time on Rosebud as a volunteer teacher last summer and came to understand to some degree why Mary writes what she does about the rez.

5 out of 5 stars Daring, Provocative, Enlightening.......1998-01-28

"Ohitika Woman" is a true confession of a life most American Women have never lived. From Wounded Knee to Washington, from rags to riches, from love to heartbreak. Mary Brave Bird talks openly about her life as a proud Lakota woman, who defends the best interest of her people in the best ways she knows how. She talks honestly about life growing up on a poor Indian reservation, and proudly of her time with the American Indian Movement during the seige of Wonded Knee during the massive Red Movement of the 1970's. She is is a remarkably head-strong woman, and has lived her life this way even against incredible odds. What I enjoyed most was her enduring strength and the need to succeed and never give up. For this, she is a true winner, and a true success. A book for all Americans, "Ohitika Woman" has something to teach us all. As a Native Canadian, I greatly admire her overwhelming courage, strength and passion in fighting for what she believes in!

Mary Brave Bird tells the very compelling and dramatic story of her life, growing up as an American Indian woman. This is a life full of non-stop action, from Wounded Knee, to stand-offs in Washington, from rags to riches, from love, to heartbreak. This is a book for all Americans. As a Native Canadian, I understand her strength, her generosity, her courage, her pain. I am most impressed by her overwhelming fighting spirit, and her desperate and never-ending need to finish her work fighting for First Nations people across the continent.
