Book Description
We Pierce is the heartbreaking story of two brothers. One brother, Smith, goes to war. The other brother, Sam, stays home and protests against the war. A true believer in his country, Smith leads a tank company into battle in Iraq during the first Gulf War. Sam, an aspiring writer who is as much a rebel as his older brother is a natural leader, is busy demonstrating in Times Square in New York and at the Capitol steps in Washington, D.C. Smith learns about the true nature of patriotism, camaraderie, modern warfare and, perhaps most important, the soldiers' secret that some things learned over there are better not brought back home. Meanwhile, Sam faces his own personal struggles, questioning the strength of his beliefs while losing a battle with alcohol and narcotics. The depth of the sacrifices made at home by their family's commitment to honor and duty to battlefields abroad haunts both of the brothers, despite their disparate experiences.
As he did with his first novel, American by Blood, acclaimed novelist Andrew Huebner draws on his family's long experience with violence and military service and renders a haunting novel of war. From the desert of Iraq to the Lower East Side of New York, We Pierce is about fighting for what you believe in, no matter what the cost to yourself or your brother.

A tale of two brothers and their battles.......2004-07-23
First of all, I'd give this book 3 1/2 stars, which isn't bad. I wanted to read this novel after having read "Jarhead" and "Baghdad Express", two memoirs about Marines in the first Gulf War. I like that there are books coming out by the soldiers and Marines who fought in the first Gulf War, offering different perspectives on the same topic. This one was written as a novel, though the writer uses his own last name as the same last name for his two main characters, the brothers Smith and Sam Huebner. I'm not certain why he does this, but I found myself wondering how much of it was taken from his own life's experiences.
The most distracting thing I didn't like about the way this book was written was the lack of quotation marks to indicate speech. This was hard to get used to at first, but I caught on, although in a few places, it added confusion as to what was spoken by a character and what was only a thought. I'm not sure why he would forgo the use of quotation marks, unless it was for some literary device, but again, I thought it added to unnecessary confusion.
The tale of the two brothers was an interesting juxtaposition. I preferred reading about Smith Huebner and his experiences at war, though it didn't seem to amount to much. His brother, Sam, who aspired to be a Kerouac-style writer but got lost in drug addiction, was the heartbreaking half of the book. As I read, I couldn't believe that someone would destroy the potentiality of his own life in pursuit of the next high. I enjoyed seeing a glimpse into the life of a drug addict and how powerless they are to change, even if they intend to change, after their "final high." No jail time or ultimatum from a girlfriend seemed strong enough to convince Sam to change his ways.
The novel ends a little too abruptly for me, with Smith returning to his pre-war life and his brother in search of the next high. There wasn't any resolution to the story, no profound meaning or awakening. It just is. A sort of "year in the life of two brothers" portrait. It is well written overall and a good cautionary tale against drug usage, but beyond that, it doesn't offer a whole lot to ponder on. I didn't know what the title referred to. Before I read it, I thought it was about two brothers with the last name "Pierce." I didn't expect the writer to use his own last name for the characters.
Anyone interested in novels about our soldiers in the Gulf War should read this, along with the memoirs "Baghdad Express" (Turnipseed) and "Jarhead" (Swofford). Out of those three, I think "Jarhead" is the best, followed by this one. But "the Great American Gulf War novel" remains to be written.
Finding What You Believe In.......2003-05-08
"We Pierce," is less about fighting for what you believe in than finding what that is in the first place. Two brothers embark on adventures of discovery; one is confronted by all the demons of war, and emerges somehow unaffected - the same character at the end of Gulf War One as at the beginning; the other confronts the demons of self-worth and addiction and though we are left with hope for his recovery, never find out for sure. Both stories are well told, and tie nicely together, and the details of war and addiction coupled with the background of family history work well in giving us a believable picture; but, resolution seems to be missing. Overall, I was left wanting more; either closure, or an indication the story would be continued, rather than the feeling of life just going on. But maybe that was the point. Some people don't change much regardless of what they've been through, in which case I'd have to ask, "So what?" "We Pierce," is a good read, but guardedly recommended because of the lack of closure.

Book Description
THIS TIME, THEY WOULD MAKE A KILLING
Join master thief Nifft the Lean with his companion-at-arms, mighty barbarian Barnar Hammer-Hand, as they trust to their wits and their luck. Once Nifft and Barnar were hired by the ghost of a dead woman to kidnap the man who betrayed her and drag him down to hell to join her. A simple task -- or so they thought at first....
Another time, the pair lucked into an even more lucrative proposition, when they were shipwrecked on the way to work in Costard's sap mine -- very dangerous and sometimes nauseating work far below ground -- and were hired by Bunt to bring back twenty gills of the ichor exuded only by the monstrous insectile queen. It seemed like easy money -- they wouldn't have to go to hell! Of course, the best laid plans sometimes do go astray, but this time they were sure they would...make a killing.
Publisher's Note: Parts of this work were previously published as Nifft the Lean and The Mines of Behemoth.

Miles ahead of most other SF/Fantasy.......2004-01-24
This book captivated me from the beginning, and I was shocked at how deeply involved in the story, characters, and description I became. It was hypnotic.
This book is written in the Jack Vance style of the Dying Earth series, with an H.P. Lovecraft horror perspective. If you like Vance, you'll like this book. What made this book succeed where most others fail, was the bridge from the recognizable to the comicly foreign and demented. Too often fantasy writers just expect the reader to follow them into their artificial world that looks all-too-familiar. Expect to be blown away with Nifft. Its that dusty attic door you were always too afraid to open. Nifft opens it for you, and pushes you in, but comes along for support.
The two main characters (Nifft and his friend Barnar) have quite a bit of dialog. They joke with each other, get on each other's nerves, anger each other, and sacrifice themselves for the other. Somehow, Shea has included a very nice "buddy" story amid the horrors of imagination. Never seen it before, and it works beautifully.
Who would of thought sneaking into Hell with your buddy would be so shocking and revolting, yet so much fun? Shea struck a perfect balance between dread and absurdity. Its as if he took the dare other fantasy writers wouldn't take, and blew through the artificial ceiling of "fantastical" thought.
As I recall, this book is actually four separate stories. This works actually better than one very large novel as it gives broader scope to the characters. Things take place in different times and places. My personal favorite is "Fishing in the Demon Sea". I still have memories of it, even though its been a few years.
Enchanting!.......2000-10-24
This is an excellent, excellent book. The Nift stories are sort of a darker version of Jack Vance, with a similar level of creativity and gripping imagery.
The only thing to be careful about is if you are buying this book because you loved the other two Nift Books (Raiders of the Infernal Domain and Mines of Behemoth), because there is no new material in this book.
When O When Will Shea Return To SF?.......2000-08-16
I first read Shea in the form of his award-winning story "Polyphemus". I read but little fantasy, prefering SF. Shea is a HELLUVA Science Fiction writer, but he is NOT the most prolific around! Trying to get Shea and Vernor Vinge to step up their output is a task dear to my heart!
"lurid brilliance and craftsmanlike discipline".......2000-07-06
The Cheap Truth review of NIFFT THE LEAN says it betterthan I could possibly manage: "This is an important, even crucial book, with the lurid brilliance and craftsmanlike discipline of a Bosch canvas. Not to be missed."
A Classic Back in Print.......2000-06-23
Michael Shea opens up new doors for readers of Horror andFantasy Literature with the "The Incomplete Nifft". In thisvolume the lucky reader is treated to a reprint of the now out of print and hard to find Nifft the Lean, plus the latest Nifft novel. It's two for the price of one. Both feature the irrepressible Nifft the Lean and his trusty sidekick Barnar the Chilite. Yes, in some ways this is the age old buddy theme, but the resemblance to, say, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser is superficial. Nifft is the real hero.
But why should you read Shea when you can pick up the latest flabby offering from the fantasy trilogy factory? Unlike most fantasy writers nowadays Michael Shea deals in the fantastic. Nifft's adventures to Hell or his sojourn in the belly of the Behemoth resonate deep within the reader's imagination. These stories are literally the stuff of legend and myth. What's more, Shea tells his tales in a voice you aren't likely to come across in most contemporary fantasy. Intelligent, shrewd, and literate, Shea writes for the thinker, but his images are more suitable for the sensualist who relishes the frisson of the grotesque and the fantastic. It is a tribute to Shea's skill as a writer that his fervid pen always serves his intelligence. The horrors and grotesqueries found in his pages appear there in order to make a very clear point, usually an old fashioned moral point, about the power of the human spirit to withstand, and in some small but important way to triumph over, the terrors to which life (and Michael Shea) subjects us. For Shea is above all a Stoic. Probably an agnostic Stoic, but a disciple of Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus all the same.
So go ahead and give The Incomplete Nifft the Lean a try. You may be shocked, but you won't be disappointed.

Adam O'Connor is no stranger to trouble. His most recent stunt--setting off firecrackers in a teacher's car--has landed him a school suspension. But even Adam can't have predicted the brand of trouble that awaits him when he's yanked to 2345 to lead an historic meeting between humans and the warlike K'lugu and Devlins. Will he display the "grit" that only a select few in his generation possess? Will he become the hero that he is destined to be?

Face to Face With the Devlin.......2005-01-04
In the twenty-fourth century, the Earth is a happy and healthy place. War and disease have been wiped out. It is a utopia. Humanity has become peaceful and calm. So when mysterious aliens nicknamed Givers came and gave humanity the ability to reach the stars with transporters, humans were no longer prepared to face the dangers of a new frontier. As special problems arise, they search in time for special individuals with "grit" and bring them forward to help out. Because teleporters don't seem to work with adults, teenagers are the ones yanked to the future.
The final volume of the series (don't know if more were planned). This time a teen from 1999 who seems to be on a downward slide is pulled to the future to help out. Humanity is going to have a meeting with a belligerent race that is able to teleport adults. The first meeting will be very important and lead to a second closer to Earth. A third race will be acting as hosts and mediators. Each side will have eight delegates. The humans have decided to add three teens with grit to their party. Their main goal will be to find out if the aliens have any knowledge of a lost colony that may have survived from the ship Roanoke.
This story takes a long time to really get going. The mission begins about midway through the book. The framework moves even further away from the first book which leads me to believe that series setting was only very loosely worked out. But in the end it is still a good story even if the framework changes are necessary to some of the plot and not just the setting.

Book Description
A backyard-loving guy, Al Roker's passionate about firing up all three of his grills at once and cooking everything from Steaks As Big As Your Head and Kansas City-Style Ribs to Grilled Sea Bass.
The hundred recipes in this book are casual and simple -- just the way Al likes to cook for his family and friends. Like most of us, Al first learned to grill at the knee of his dad, whose policy was "the more lighter fluid, the better." But a trip to the Memphis in May Barbecue Championship ignited a real passion, and since then Al's grills have rarely grown cold. And while Al does have some hard-and-fast rules, like "don't keep moving your meat around" and "never touch another man's grill," his food is simple yet inventive, impressive and delicious.
In addition to great stuff for over the fire -- Jerk Chicken, Marinated Pork Tenderloin, Kebabs Cooked Right, New Orleans-Style Barbecued Shrimp, Fish Fillets with Lemon-Parsley Sauce, Turkey on the Grill, and, from "The Wurst City in the World," Sheboygan Bratwurst -- Al Roker's Big Bad Book of Barbecue has something for everyone, including recipes for quick-and-easy starters, marinades, main-dish salads, sides, classic American desserts, cooling drinks, vegetarian dishes, and low-fat fare.
So lean back in that lawn chair and have a sip of Lemon-Lime Fizz. Munch on a Spicy Wing or some BBQ Popcorn. That brisket should take care of itself in another hour or so.

Not just for grills.......2006-04-21
I recently moved to an apartment and had to give up my charcoal grill. Happily, I've still used this cookbook and the marinades and recipes it contains to cook indoors in my oven and on my stove. The marinades are fabulously flavorful and any leftover meat makes great sandwiches.
Not Just For the Grill Barbecue Book!.......2005-08-30
I was surprised to receive this book as a gift but found great recipes for any cook, novice to experienced. Easy to follow directions, easy to find ingredients. I've had the book about 3 weeks and have tried about 10 recipes so far, impressing family and friends at several cookouts as well as some meals at home. Great marinades to prepare ahead and take along. I would definitely recommend this one as the all around summer cookbook/barbecue book to have!
A "real guy's or gal's" barbeque book!.......2002-06-21
Hooray for Al! He has brought barbeque back to where it belongs - in our backyards and on our plain ol' charcoal grills! Great recipes - easy to follow - you don't need to search the far corners of the earth for the ingredients - and, best of all - they taste great! Put this book on the top of your cookbook wishlist - it's worth it!
This book is a blast!.......2002-06-20
Finally, a straightforward, funny, easy to use barbecue and grilling book that makes me laugh and doesn't make me feel like I need a lot of goofy equipment and a degree in fire management. My family and I have used it on two back to back weekends - go for the Steaks as Big as Your Head and the Jerk Chicken. This simple stuff has a big bang on the plate. Thanks, Al!
Sorry Al, I found it a little bland.......2002-06-17
I was hoping that Al would focus on barbecue recipes from contest like Memphis in May or some of the other programs that he has done on the Food Network. If you are looking for sauce baced barbecue look elsewhere.

This book was somewhat helpful. It was interesting to know about the personality of this breed. But I have a lot of unanswered questions now that I have had the puppy for two weeks.
Living with a Shih Tzu, your dog will love it.......2007-01-13
The book is a great manual for Shih Tzu owners. From day one it was helpful for us to understand how to handle our puppy. She is now 8 weeks old and is healthy, active, curious, mischievous and sometimes seems to have read the book before we did. The author perfectly describes the usual behavior of this breed and, best of all, she provides useful hints and instructions on how to deal with specific situations and problems such as feeding, discipline and playtime. We recommend the book with enthusiasm.
Must have for Shih Tzu owners.......2006-11-20
As a trainer and breeder of Shih Tzu for over ten years I highly reccomend this book. It has great practical advise and is full of great pictures and stories. I give this to all my Shih Tzu puppy buyers. Enjoy your bundle of joy!!!
Living with a Shih Tzu.......2006-07-08
As the owner of an eight week Shih Tzu, the book provided many good ideas on raising my puppy. This book was recommended by the breeder as a "how to" book.

Master Tzu Kuo Shih has put together a very good book for anyone who is new to qi gong. The book does not demonstrate any physical techniques, rather it lays the foundation for why qi gong works the way it does. This book is a must for any one who is interested in the origins of qigong in regards to traditional chinese medicine. Book is more TCM based than martial art based.

Book Description
This volume generates a narrative grammar which unites linguistic, structuralistic, rhetorical, and reader-response methods and then uses it to investigate the textual indicators for interpreting the ending of the Gospel of Mark. The first part of this book generates the narrative grammar in response to significant contemporary writings on methods of narrative analysis. The second part provides a detailed analysis of the Gospel's larger narrative units. The analysis isolates narrative units according to a consistent set of criteria, grounds the interpretation on a limited number of qualifications of the implied reader, indicates the centrality of the literary and rhetorical traditions of the Hebrew Bible for interpretation, clarifies the model of irony used in the narrative, and accounts for the negative presentation of the disciples on narrative grounds.

Showered with awards, honors, and critical praise for her previous memoir, Warriors Don't Cry--which detailed her years as one of the "Little Rock Nine" who integrated Central High School--Melba Pattillo Beals now presents an acclaimed follow-up which answers the question asked of her time and time again: What happened next?
Here, she recounts the story of her move to California, where she found refuge in the home of a white family, her eventual marriage to a white man, and her long struggle to let trust and love conquer fear and hate. Her inspiring tale of healing offers a new definition of family and of freedom--as well as a compelling account of moving from powerlessness to power, with heart and soul intact.
"We see her struggles to find her own identity as an African-American woman...Highly recommended."-- Library Journal
"Moving...an important story."-- Ebony
The follow-up to the very successful and highly acclaimed, Warriors Don't Cry--which won the ALA Award for Nonfiction Book of the Year and the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award--was named a Notable Book by the ABA, and was included in Readers Digest's annual edition of "Today's Best Nonfiction"
The author has been featured in such publications as USA Today, People, and Newsweek
Beals has been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for her role in the Civil Rights movement

White is a State of Mind.......2001-01-12
"We were concerned about much more than breathing- we were trying to save our lives- racing from room to room, slamming our windows shut and locking them as fast as we could." Melba Patillo Beals writes the story of her life, and what she had to go through everyday, as a result of her being one of the strong teenagers that integrated Central high in the year 1957. This book, the sequal to Warriors Dont Cry, makes you feel the pain, suffering, and hurt that Melba experienced living as a young african american in Little Rock Arkansa. The book was not all about the tough times she had, but also about the good times that her and her family shared, the things she accomlpished, and how she got to where she is know. In the book, Melba is living with her young brother Conrad, her grandma India, and her mother Loise, where she is trying to graduate high school, and then hopefully leave her small town of Arkansa. The book is very touching and I got emotional reading it, as i did when i read her first book. A quote that made me want to keep reading was in the beggining of the book, when she writes in her diary"Oh, god, please help me find my way. I don't want to disappoint anyone. Don't I deserve to have a senior year? Can't we have intergration but not have me participate? This is such a big problem, only you can figure it out. Thy will be done. Please give me courage." This passage showed her courage, and i wanted to keep on reading to see what she would do.Melba travels to San francisco were she meets with the Santa Rosa NAACP, and realizes that the hatred that she once thought all the whites had, was not true, and that she would begin a new life. She dealt with growing up with a white family, getting married, having children, and having her husband leave her. Overall this was a good book, and i enjoyed it. If it could have been different i wish it would have been a bit shorter, and more descriptive about her life as an adult.I recoment this book to others, and suggest it, for a book to read on a rainy day. Enjoy reading it, and check out her other book.
White Is a State of Mind.......2000-10-03
Melba Pattillo Beals' journey through a time of prejudice shows a woman's courage. After trying, to integrate into an all white high school and being harassed by the K.K.K. Melba Beals is relocated by the NAACP. She starts her new life in California, a much different environment than the one she left behind in Arkansas. Melba hits a turning point in her life as she forgets about her studies and things to try to fit in. This non-fictional story drives your emotions as it talks of how cruel our world can be. It also showed how it only takes one person to make a difference. This truly inspirational piece will leave you screaming for justice.
A True Heroine.......2000-08-17
Words can't express how this book made me feel! For her to recount the horror and pain she underwent in Little Rock, was so touching. Her actual experience was personally felt. Ms. Beals has an extraordinary way of expressing herself. She brought out so many emotions in me. I would love to be able to personally write to her - she has truly brought me to a new level of strength. Reading her book has taught me that keeping your faith in God will ultimately show you that all the blessings he has given you should not be taken for granted.
Outstanding.......1999-10-04
If you are at a crossroad in your life or you want to reach a deeper awareness about life then this book is for you. In its easy to read language, Melba Beals recounts her life story using sections from her diary that began as a youth and she continued until adulthood. This book is romantic, comical, inspirational, and riveting. I thoroughly enjoyed walking in Melba's "moccasins" as she recounts the extraordinary events that have shaped her into a terrific human being. I loved reading the book! Thanks Melba, you've done it again!
Awesome.......1999-08-18
In spite of all of the drama this young woman went through, she accomplished her dreams. I loved this book - especially what she said about life being like a puzzle and how we need to just take all of the pieces as they come and we will see the complete picture over time. Her life was full of heartbreak and struggle, but it appears to me that the seeds of wisdom planted by her grandmother caused her to pick herself up and brush off and get going no matter what. I could hear the love for her daughther and even for her husband. I loved her honesty about every aspect of her life including her naive perspective in her early college days. The psychologist in me couldn't help wonder why she was not as honest about her contribution to the strain in her marriage at the very end, but I do like the way she told her story overall. I would highly recommend this book after reading her first book, of course.
