Who I Read Now........1999-08-13

Lucia Berlin's prose sneaks up on you and, with spare simple language, bowls you over. As with her two earlier collections from Black Sparrow, Berlin fills these stories with sad, yet inspiring characters living on or near the fringe of society. We get to see the lives of teachers and nurses, people we usually view only in the context of their work, up close and in alarming detail. Berlin is a joy to read.

Garth Baxtor, a apprentice physician to his father Joseph, is like his father possessed of The Touch - the ability to ease pain and discomfort in addition to promoting healing by laying hands on the patient. When Joseph's yearly summons to tend to the prisoners working in the mines arrives, Garth is finally deemed old enough and experienced enough to accompany him. Garth soon discovers that the Veins, as the mines are called, are the most dismal and appalling place imaginable. Imagine his surprise and horror when, while treating prisoner #859, he senses the Manteceros royal tattoo beneath scar tissue on the prisoner's arm - when everyone in Escator knows that seventeen years ago the crown prince met his death in a tragic hunting accident.

'Beyond the Hanging Wall' is a pleasant if simplistic and predictable read. There isn't a lot of suspense, but it was still a decent diversion. It's easy to understand why it's considered young adult by some, although in my library it's shelved with adult fantasy.

A Likable Tale.......2007-03-13

Having read most of Sara Douglass's novels, Beyond the Hanging Wall proved to be a fine, stand-alone novel absent of the melodrama and lurid sex which had marred a few of her other stories. The protagonist, Garth Baxtor, a young man gifted with the "Touch," an ability to assess and probe illnesses, travels with his father to the Veins--a gloomy, squalid series of mines where gloam is harvested--to administer healing to the prisoners. During his three week soujourn, Garth discovers, much to his delight and surprise, that one prisoner, Lot no. 859, is in actuality a prince thought to have died seventeen years ago. Although the prisoner denies his true identity, bemoaning that there is "nothing beyond the hanging wall," Garth embarks on a quest to free the true heir to the kingdom. Garth enlists the aid of a marsh witch and a brotherhood committed to the line of the true royal family. He also pursues the mystery behind the mythical dream creature called the Manteceros, which is inextricably linked to Lot no. 859. Mystery, suspense, with some mayhem are thrown together to produce a rousing adventure tale that you just can't put down.

Nice story, family friedly (mostly).......2005-02-05

This is a well written enjoyable read. I read it a couple of weeks after reading Hades Daughter, which was a challenge. Beyond the Hanging Wall had none of the offensive material that was abundant in Hades daughter. Two of my friends read thes books after I did, and we agreed on Hanging wall as a good and enjoyable story. Ony two of us finished Hades daughter due to the offensive material and unsympathetic characters. You wouldn't know that these two books were written by the same woman. In any case Beyond the Hanging Wall can be safely given as a gift knowing that it is an enjoyable and wholesome story.

The Wayfarer Redemption.......2004-08-06

Even though I have read several hundred sci-fi and fantasy books, this is one of the few books I had problems with putting down!! Sara's writing has kept me with wanting more and searching for the next books in the series!

This book was OK. Other people have pointed out the lack of character development and the obvious plot, along with the nice creation of a world and the atmosphere within it. I felt strongly that this book is most appropriate for Young Adults, and should be both marketed & shelved that way.

Good enough to eat.......2007-07-06

The author obviously spent a great deal of time researching the book, as it is full of not only fascinating recipes, but descriptions of their history, legends of the Silk Road, and a great array of photos of the dishes and of various culinary practices of the highlighted cultures. Great fun to skim through even when you're not prepared to cook anything.

Everything I've made from the book has been delicious. That being said, there are numerous recipes with ingredients that are either difficult to find outside of the region the dish is from (such as unripe grapes), or ones that will take up space in your pantry forever because you only use them for one or two recipes (pomegranate paste, ground angelica petals, and so on). A free hand with substitutions is vital and fortunately the author has provided details about this in the glossary in the back.

This book is delicious! There are excellent photos of both the dishes and the different areas and peoples of the Silk Road, The text is interesting, with information about history, cultures, cooking techniques, and food items. I appreciate that the recipes are not complicated or particularly labor-intensive. I have tried three so far, and all three were hits. I have a large collection of cookbooks, but if I had to start all over again, this one would be one of my first buys.

spectacular and delicious.......2005-10-09

this is a beautiful book with somewhat complex recipes but educational. my friend borrowed it to use it in her geography class covering the silk road topic. the pictures are spectacular. it is classified as paperback but the quality of paper and print make it as durable and beautiful as a hardback. i strongly recommend this book not just for the wonderful recipes also to amuse your eyes. let your imaginations travel!!

This beautiful and highly readable cookbook contains delicious, if somewhat complex, recipes for dishes from Italy to China. All of them are vegetarian, but many could be adapted to meat eaters, or used as an accompaniment. If used as an accompaniment, bear in mind that the cookbook is targeted to vegetarians who plan to make th main dish the bulk of their meal; double the number served if used as an accompaniment. If you love to cook, this book will inspire you and add variety to your repetoire.

Najmieh Batmanglij's book on Silk Road Cooking is not only a very good cookbook, with wonderful recipes, many of which I've tried , but also a beautiful book with many colored pictures. This is not only a cookbook, but a also a pictorial essay of another culture, a very exotic culture.

A Superposed Owner.......2001-08-31

As an owner of a Browning Superposed, I was interested in the history of its' design. This book is, in many ways, an excellent overview of this popular over/under which combines American design with Belgian Fabrique Nationale Herstel craftsmanship. I did, however, find the details of Browning's business history excessive, boring and unnecessary; charts, sales figures, etc.. A few pages on this subject would have been more than adequate; I wanted to know about the gun. The color photos are excellent, although, of course, I would have liked more. Paper quality is also excellent. In short, everything is here for the Browning or double enthusiast. Just filter through the boring stuff. If you're interested in the Superposed there's really no alternative to this book. Plus it's reasonably priced for what you get. Hope this review helps anyone considering the purchase of this book.

Good read for the money. Informative and nicely illustrated.......2000-09-08

I enjoyed this book for it's illustrations and written content. I dissagree with the some of the other reviewers comments. The "Salt-Wood" problem was discussed, several paragraphs worth covering it's origin. There is also discussion of the design changes made during the course of production and well as a sidebar on the Simmons/Cordy & Sons barrel conversions. The text does focus alot on the financial dealings of the Browning family and the FN factory, but the Superposed was a commercial venture so the health of the company producing it is relevant. I also enjoyed the lengthy discussion of the engravers with samples of their workmanship. It was ammusing to compare the photos to my '69 Grade I Broadway. The book could have used more engineering drawings of the design. However, I didn't expect this book to be focused on the repair of Superposed shotguns.

So Much Potential, So Little Achievement.......2000-06-23

This book held great promise for me. But as I read through it, I began to realize how few real facts about the Superposed it actually contained. Oh, there are plenty of sales charts and market projections... photos of beautiful guns, too. But these can only suffice to a point. The collector and aficionado wants to know more than the story of engraving and sales histories. The inside story of the gun is crtical. The steels. The design. The mechanism's function and evolution. And with so much access to the FN records and personnel, actual on-site contact in Liege, and an apparent interview with the late Val Browning, author Schwing managed to reveal very little beyond the empirical. Many of the facts that are contained in the book are also repeated. Some more than twice. It's still a great photo feast, however. And it inspired me to go out and buy two Superposed shotguns. So the book does have a certain value.

Excellent Illustrations, boring sales statistics.......1999-02-04

The book is a good tabletop piece, with some well researched facts about the Superposed history and some excellent color illustrations. If you are buying the book to guide you in the purchase of a Superposed beware! There is no discussion of the salt wood problem that existed from 1966 to 1973. Unless you are excited about statistical data covering models, grades, etc. you will not be pleased with the large percentage of the book dedicated to charts and graphs. You can learn more about the Superposed from other books and articles than is available here. Caveat Emptor!

One of the finest books I have read on fine firearms........1998-06-18

I am an admirer of fine firearms and I own three double barrel shotguns; one of which is a Browning Superposed, SN 69172. I bought it used back in 1970 for $288. Wow! Say goodbye to the good old days. When I saw this book, I had to have it. The author went into great depth and detail regarding what has to be one of the finest double barreled shotguns ever made. Nothing is left to chance, from its first years as a production item through to the present, when it ended up becoming a custom made item. Chronological dates are provided concerning production and when they were made. Mine was made in 1959. I was especially impressed with the chapter on the engraving department for the FN Works. The number of engravers employed by the factory was extensive and it is no small wonder the higher grade Brownings are some of the most beautifully engraved guns I have ever seen. This is borne out by the very extensive use of color photographs of the engraving and custom guns found throughout the book. If you are an admirer of fine guns like I am, then you would enjoy sitting down in your favorite chair one evening and reading this book. This is a book to be read again and again and enjoyed. Buy it. It will be money well spent.

Cooper's vibrant use of color in the lavish, textured rendering he uses to depict his favored body type—"pillowy" is a particularly apt descriptive—calls to mind a more colorful and surreal version of R. Crumb's obsessive and sumptuous portraits of women.

This book also doubles as the sixth "issue" of Cooper's ongoing comic book series, Weasel, though as a stand-alone hardcover art book it bears little relation to the first five issues; it functions much better as a catalog for upcoming and recent exhibitions of Cooper's in Philadelphia, Ottawa, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
