The title story alone deserves five stars!.......2000-10-05

Take your favorite Darkover novel, compress it into a few pages but leave all the emotional impact in place -- that's "The Keeper's Price." I notice that MZB and Lisa Waters kept coming back to Hilary Castamir's charcter, and I wish there had been a novel about her. :)

Leaving aside the brilliance of the title masterpiece, the rest of the collection is strong and well-organized. Even the stories I didn't like as much at first ("A Simple Dream" comes to mind, as does "Ambassador to Corresanti") have grown on me. I've read and re-read this collection probably twenty times in the past year. I still want to read it over again. These are wonderful stories!

I also appreciated how well-organized this collection and _Sword of Chaos_ were, and wish the anthologies had continued to print stories in approximate chronological order.

Good recipes for indian and thai.......2007-01-10

This is a reasonably good recipe book for Indian and Thai cuisine. It is easy to follow. It has a nice variety of choices to cook. It was a step up from what I had worked with before. I am just starting to cook Indian and Thai food.

A great easy-to-use cookbook.......2005-10-18

I have tried 5 recipes from this book, and they all turned out great. I don't know very much about cooking this type of food, so it's because it's a great, easy to follow cookbook, rather than any skill on my part. I basically followed the recipes to the letter. There's a great guide to all the more exotic ingredients (some of which aren't even used in this book), that suggests substitutions and tells you when you can use them. You do need to obtain some rather exotic ingredients for some of the recipes (lemongrass leaves?), but many don't require anything more exotic than curry powder. If you do want to make everything in the book, there's a list of mail order places in the back. I actually like the recipe selection in this cookbook a lot better than True Thai from the same author.

Easy and authentic.......2002-03-21

This book should be subtitled "Authentic curries made easy as spaghetti and meatballs." I spent two years living and traveling in Asia, and am a longtime curry aficionado. Of all the homemade curry recipes I have tried, the ones in this book are the closest to the authentic dishes I had in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. And they're almost all quick and easy enough to serve as low-fuss weeknight dinners! The secret to the wonderful flavors is in the traditional ingredients. We have found that by simply adding a supply of curry paste, keffir lime leaves, and a few other formerly-esoteric ingredients to our list of staples, we can whip up a quick and delicious curry with ingredients we keep on hand and no extra trip to the store. The author tells you where to mail-order these items if they are not available locally. In addition, there is a great glossary of ingredients, and the recipes are easy to follow, with good tips from the author's own experience. I'm already looking forward to Volume Two!

Intro and Tour Book to the World of Currys.......2002-01-04

Remembering my intro to the curry world, the tears and gasping didn't keep me away from exploring this rather Asian specialty more. This book is great aid.

There are sections to meet your needs and tastes: from standard dinner fare designation (Appetizer, Soup, Main Course, etc.)
Neat feature of this particular book is the upfront section I've found so useful: Suggested Menus for Curry Aficionados. The Elegant Dinner with Curried Scallopsin Parchment with accompaniments was perfectly matched and easy to prepare and scrumptuous.

Suggest too as fellow reviewer that you experiment with varying amounts of powder mixutures before following recipe amounts, matching with diners' curry abilities.

Mail Order Sources and even drink ideas are included in this fine, inexpensive goldmine for Thai and Indian cookery.

A World of Exciting Flavors.......2000-01-23

Although I've often enjoyed curries in restaurants, this is my first attempt at cooking them myself. I've found the recipes fairly simple and easy to follow. I ordinarily enjoy spicy foods, and my husband loves his extra hot. So without a warning from a cooking instructor, I would have put the entire three tablespoons of Thai Green Curry Paste (from a jar) into the Thai Green Curry with Snow Peas and Shrimp. It would have been inedible. One and a half TEASPOONS made a wonderful, moderately spicy curry that we enjoyed immensely. Even if you love spicy food, I suggest that you reduce the amounts of curry paste suggested by McDermott. That said, the recipes are otherwise wonderful!

Interesting Information about Dog Allergies.......2006-08-11

I bought this book because my son is allergic to dogs. Some breeds give him the classic sneezing and itchy eyes. For that reaction, this book seems an interesting resource. Most breeds, however, cause my son to get hives. The hives generally appear where he has been licked by a dog. I had hoped that the subtitle of this book indicated that it might prove useful regarding that allergic reaction as well. Unfortunately, saliva is only mentioned twice in the book. One of the references (on page 44) is particularly ominous, but it does not clearly state whether any breeds cause less issues than others. Due to their coat type, some breeds do not clean themselves as much as others, and I wonder if that might make a difference? Also, some breeds just do not lick people as much as other breeds do. That might also be useful information. Overall, this book was a worthwhile purchase. It just did not cover one specific topic about which I had hoped to gather more information.

Great Book On This Subject.......2006-05-13

My daughter is an animal lover, but recently found out that she is allergic to cats and dogs. Fortunately, these are her only allergies, but our cat does cause her to have rhinitis. She would really love to have a dog in spite of this. The allergist told us there were no hypoallergenic dogs, but this author does offer a different point of view.

This book is attractive, concise and gave me lots of ideas for how I can make owning animals a better experience for my animal loving (but allergic) daughter. My first step has been to remove the curtains from her room. This book makes the steps seem possible, not overwhelming.

This book is the standard for Belleek. It is crammed full of fabulous photographs of this lovely parian china. It contains an extensive history of the pottery and those who developed this unique ware. It provides a thorough explanation of the process of manufacturing. It shows us the various marks, or backstamps and discusses their meanings. My only quibble with the book is the price guide, which is somewhat incomplete and which does not reflect the effect that online auctions have had on collecting. All in all, a wonderful book for the Belleek collector.

A must acquisition for collectors of this lovely Irish parian china. Covers history of the pottery, process of crafting and the names, marks and ware. Over 2,000 items pictured. A value guide of more than a 1,000 pieces, from various crafting periods, included as a bonus.

Very difficult to understand........1998-03-11

There are beautiful pictures of Belleek in this book, but to use it as a price guide is very difficult. For a piece, he only has one price for one mark, no other prices for other marks. For being an authority on Belleek, he could have made the price guide much easier to read.

Best Guide to Belleek Parian China.......1997-10-05

Probably the best guide to Belleek China currently available. Marion Langham's later book provides more illustrations but it is Degenhardt who has filled in much of the detail and provided a systematic approach to numbering and identifying Belleek. A must for any collector of this exquisite and increasingly difficult to find china.

These publishers are the greatest. They consistently top the competition. This book offers so many visual gifts to its readers, and since the quilts are small, the projects are producable within a reasonable amount of time. I just let my eyes meander through the book, and I am inspired to get back to the sewing machine. It is written in a friendly style, without the typical clinical and off putting language that we find in so many other quilt books.The quilts are photographed so clearly with such vibrant colors. I dare anyone to read this book, and not turn directly to her fabric stash and begin dreaming of the next project!

A Gorgeous Book!.......2000-05-20

Like the other books in this House and Garden series, this is a wonderful reference for anyone interested in traditional, classic, elegant design. In my opinion, it should be in every interior designer's library! The interiors pictured are varied in their themes and beautifully composed. These are not cutsey, overdone rooms. They are timeless in their decor - informal and comfortable, but with style. I get new ideas each time I go to this book! The chapters are arranged by room type so that if I want to see kitchen design I can go right to that chapter rather than search through the entire book. Although, once opened, I rarely shut this book after looking at only one or two pages!

This is an excellent source book for the ukulele enthusiast. With practice and patience, one can learn some of these classic song solos in the jazz ukulele stylings of Lyle Ritz, one of the greats in uke playing.

An essential book for all uke players.

A great music book. This book, which includes cd, is arranged by Ukulele Jazz Master Lyle Ritz. The disc contains all songs in the book, seven for tenor uke and eight for fluke. An electric base helps define the harmonies and the rythm. It's a bit advanced for me because I'm still learning the basic chords, but the finger charts are very easy to follow. The collection has songs spanning swing, jazz, ballad, waltz, bossa nova and reggae, most with written lyrics and a few without (instrumentals). Lyrics are not sung on the disc except for the last song "Where or When." The nice part about this disc is that listeners who aren't learning to play but simply want to hear the magical ukulele in the air will enjoy it as much as uke students. Mahalo

This book is extremely challenging--and rewarding too. If you have the patience to stick with it, you'll like the outcome. The CD is definetely helpful when trying to learn some of the difficult rhythms and chord changes. Not for beginners.

Will not disappoint........2003-04-12

Sophisticated arrangements. I've played the uke for many years and still found some of the chord voicing challenging on the fingers. However, if you stick with it you will be rewarded with a sound that will sure to please. As an added bonus, you learn new fingerings of old chords that will enrich the sound. Also a good case study on how to color basic chords and melody. Buy it and stick with it. You'll impress everyone including yourself.

Lyle Ritz is a national treasure. In this book, he guides your fingers to the lush jazz chords that make the unassuming little ukulele show just what a musical powerhouse it really can be. Although not for the very beginner, the chord voicings are definitely approachable for the intermediate player and will rocket your knowledge of the fingerboard forward in a big way. The CD is the perfect complement to the excellent tunes in this book. Highly recommended, especially for those who adore the great jazz standards.

Great book. This collection of jazz songs arranged by Ukulele Jazz Master Lyle Ritz contains the music for twenty five beautiful jazz songs as well as a cd. The disc features a bass line and both ukulele parts: tenor and standard tunings. With finger charts that are very user friendly, this collection adds a refined quality to any player's quiver of songs. As with Lyle Ritz's Solo collection in Jumpin' Jim's "Ukulele Masters" series this disc also provides wonderful pleasure listening to those not learning to play. A classy book with beautiful, elegant music, a fabulous glimpse of what the Ukulele is capable of. Mahalo.

This book was one that opened my eyes to the welfare program and the problems it has. It has also illustrated the social gaps that have been created by gender, race, and poverty. Rosemary did an excellent job in description in the life that she lead, and to how she has overcome the many barriers in her life. A great read for all!

A MUST-read.......1999-12-31

This woman knows how to write and she has something to say. She makes her point very effectively. For the cost of a paperback, you can give a copy to every Republican or other person who matters to you who doesn't understand or support Aid to Dependent Children or welfare, etc. Her book leads people to care about her and understand.

Inspiring book that school teachers might use........1999-02-26

A deeply moving, inspiring story. I felt like I was right there with her when she described her brief childhood encounter with Martin Luther King. Her writing brings characters alive like the best fiction I've ever read. I would seriously consider trying to get my school to order this book (I'm studying to become a high school English teacher).

An inspirational and deeply touching book........1999-01-20

Unafraid of the Dark is a beautifully written, inspirational and deeply touching book. I was unable to put it down from the moment I read the first page. I admire Rosemary and feel that she is an inspiration to all African American women.

Essential reading!.......1999-01-14

Rosemary Bray's memoir cuts through the anti-welfare hype and contempt for poor people, especially poor black women, that brought us "welfare reform." Her mother went on AFDC because her father was a violent gambler, and she had four kids to raise. Welfare enabled rosemary to grow up in threadbare but at least decent poverty--food on table, roof over head,school supplies and so forth. Far from promulgating the "culture of dependency," welfare helped Bray's mother get some independence. And far from passing welfare on to her daughter, Rosemary went to yale. Bray writes so perceptively about her family and her childhood, about the racism of l960s Chicago (and of yale). she made me think about all the little cruelties and deprivations poor people are expected to just accept, and how wrong this is. I wish every white person would read this book, and every person who thinks people are poor because they "don't want to work." Isn't it interesting that even in the midst of the "memoir boom," this book didn't get front page reviews?
