Book Description
When a bloody, pulverized body is found lying beneath the rustic timbers of an authentic torture device so vicious and complicated as to be blood-curdling, there's sufficient unrest in tiny Forbes Abbot to call in Chief Inspector Barnaby. Was Dennis Brinkley done in by crooked business partners, a teenage seductress, a couple of would-be publishers who've just inherited--and then lost--millions, or perhaps by tired, timid little Benny Fraye, who wouldn't hurt a fly--would she?
Barnaby will soon find out just who set in motion the gruesome machine that crushed the unfortunate victim. Caroline Graham's delightful cozy village mysteries, which inspired the continuing Midsommer Murders series starring Inspector Barnaby on A&E Television, have long been fan-favorites; A Ghost in the Machine is sure to cement her reputation as one of the best crime writers in the mystery business today.
Customer Reviews:
A novel about British country style life.......2007-08-19
This is an Inspector Barnaby's novel. Barnaby himself does not appear almost till the middle of it though. And the murder itself does not happend till the page 150.
I found the first introductory part "before the murder" a little too long and murder investigation too short to make this book a really good detective novel. And it is too naive to become a good social piece of literature.
Although Caroline Graham evidently has talent for discription, especially for discription of people and places. All characters in this story are vivid and alive. And it was interesting from the point of view of learning about British country style life. The scenes discribing people in the village gardenin, shopping, going about their businesses or just relaxing in their back yards are the most attractive.
But there are no unexpected twists, no really astonishing conclusion, no brilliant investigation. The murder story is rather predictable. There is only one really bad guy and he eventually became a murderer.
Fans of "Midsummer Murders" TV series will probably find this book interesting and amusing.
Village murder with a kick.......2007-07-14
I'm a big fan of both Caroline Graham's Inspector Barnaby mysteries, and the TV series that spun off--although the books and the show could not be more different. A Ghost in the Machine, the seventh (and last, to date) of the Barnaby novels, is the book that's most unlike the on-screen version, and my favorite.
After Carey Lawson dies and leaves a large sum of money to her nephew Mallory and his family, everything starts to change for the Lawsons; their arrival in the village sets off a chain of events that results in the death of their neighbor and financial advisor, Dennis Brinkley. Dennis' timid friend Benny tries to convince the Causton CID that the death was a murder, but there's no proof...until a medium of questionable talents and equally questionable morals gets involved.
Barnaby and Troy don't put in an appearance until halfway through the story and solve the crime relatively quickly, but the murders are a small part of the bigger picture (which includes embezzlement, fraud, more murders, and child abuse).
Graham's dry sense of humor and clear-eyed descriptions of English village life have never been better, but what sets A Ghost in the Machine apart is the complexity of the characters, and the creepy ending.
well developed characters, but a bit ponderous.......2007-03-09
I enjoy the tv program spun off of Ms. Grahams novels, so thought I'd read a few of her books. This is the first of two I recently purchased and I think my title expresses best what I thought of it.
Long and Boring.......2006-04-04
This book just dragged! I love Midsomer Murders and I thought this would be closely related, but the author just meandered through out, never pushing forward the plot - what there was of the plot.
The ending was ridiculous and tacked on - I cant believe I finsihed reading 500 pages for such a disappoinment!
A Good Read.......2005-12-04
Caroline Graham's novels are always character-driven and more in the vein of suspense than the mysteries they purport to be. Her latest, "A Ghost in the Machine," is typical of the fare and a good read.
I've always liked the cozy, though Graham has updated the genre to conform to more modern times and made it a bit more gritty than some of her predecessors.
As in the past, she has lain her story in a small English village flush with diverse and eccentric people.
A stressed out teacher inherits the property of his beloved aunt. This offers the opportunity to escape the city and follow his wife's long-cherished dream of becoming a publisher of literary novels. Their spoiled-rotten daughter remains in London to become involve in a matter which will later impact on them and their plans.
Their financial consultant, who seems to be well-liked by everyone in the village, has the odd habit of collecting ancient war machines. He is the first murder victim, though at first his death seems to be accidental. Other notable characters include Brinkley's friend, the former companion/housekeeper of the aunt; an assortment of odd neighbors, spiritualists and pathetic children.
It is sometime in this novel before the pragmatic Chief Inspector Barnaby and the all too human Sergeant Troy make their first appearance and even longer before they agree a murder has been committed. After that, the action picks up.
Some have compared Graham to Dickens because of her reliance on characters to carry her plots. I would not go so far as that since her style is as eccentric as some of her characters. Still, that is part of her charm. The reader (this reader, at least) is willing to forgive her variance from accepted style because it is just so entertaining.

Consolidation of the 3rd Triad of Garrett Books.......2005-11-12
Since most of Cook's Garrett books are long out of print and very difficult to come by, you might end up having to buy this consolidation to find the individual stories. This book, "Garrett Investigates," is the 3rd of the three consolidated so far. The others are "The Garrett Files" and "Garrett, P.I.." This book contains the 3rd triad of stories in the Garrett series: "Deadly Quicksilver Lies," "Petty Pewter Gods," "Faded Steel Heat." "The Garrett Files" contains the 1st triad: "Sweet Silver Blues," "Bitter Gold Hearts," and "Cold Copper Tears." "Garrett, P.I." contains the 2nd triad: "Old Tin Sorrows," "Dread Brass Shadows," and "Red Iron Nights." The remaining two books ("Angry Lead Skies," and "Whispering Nickel Idols") still appear to be in print on their own. As were the other two consolidations, this book is well bound, has good quality paper, and is well cut. As a pure average of my ratings for the three contained stories, I rate this book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5. My individual reviews follow:
"Deadly Quicksilver Lies:" Not Very Happy With This One. Unfortunately, it's not up to par with the rest of the series. First, the book just seems to wander around in the middle. Garrett doesn't seem to be going anywhere with the mystery. It does pick up near the end, but that leads to the second problem: the solution to what's been happening just doesn't mean anything. We know who did what to whom and why (mostly). But, nobody really gets anything out of it. For the reader, the answers to all the questions are just emotionally empty. The final "big" problem with the book is that the character of Garrett's love interest, "Chastity," just falls apart. She's fine through most of the book, but then at the very end, she just drops out of the character (personally, emotionally, and professionaly) Cook set up for her. There's no explanation for it. It's very jarring and unwelcome. Because of this, I can only rate this book at an OK 3 stars out of 5.
"Petty Pewter Gods:" Good, But a Bit Disjointed. This is a good book that's fun to read. Unfortunately, it's not quite as good as other books in Cook's Garrett series. In many places, you can see that Cook wrote bits and pieces of the book and then cut-and-pasted them into the final order. It's not a big problem, it's just that the roughness is a bit disconcerting. A more irritating problem is that Garrett is working with a couple of pantheons of gods which I just couldn't keep straight. The individual gods, and the pantheons they belong to, just blend together and I couldn't tell who was doing what to whom. The biggest problem, though, is that the ending just appears out of thin air in the last 10 pages of the book. As I got closer and closer to the physical end, I kept wondering if this was going to be a two-parter: there was just no indication of a reasonable solution. With a sudden flurry of activity, the Dead Man and Garrett take a guess at what's going on and all heck breaks loose (which confirms their theory). Not a very satisfying ending at all. Still, I did enjoy reading the book and do recommend it. I rate this book at 4 stars out of 5.
"Faded Steel Heat:" Very Good But Has Inconsistencies. As are all Glen Cook's books with the title format of [adjective][metal type][noun], this is an interesting, fun, action-packed read. It's definitely a page-turner. Unfortunately, the minor inconsistencies I noticed in the previous book seem to be propogating in this one. Some of these errors are merely editing or lack of note-checking. For instance, near the beginning of this book, Garrett's talking to CAPTAIN Block. But, from two books back, we know that Block was promoted to COLONEL. A hundred pages on, though, Cook's got Block back as a COLONEL. In another case, Garrett's looking at a captured wagon. He specifically notes ONE prisoner. A couple pages later there are TWO prisoners. One page later, THREE. More seriously, there are behavioral problems. For instance, Garrett and his harem can't keep their minds on their business. In earlier books, Garrett's womanizing didn't really interfere in his business. In this book, both he and the women just stop working on important things (like infiltrations, kidnappings and murder) for a little bit of groping. And I mean they stop right in the middle of those things: not afterwards. Also, Garrett just misses obvious clues. He narrates to us about them, but nothing apparently clicks in his head. And then there's where he takes Tinnie with him to visit the headquarters of The Call (a militant human rights group). But, as noted in earlier books, Tinnie is part elf. Nobody ever notices. These problems are still minor. This is definitely a book to read (along with all the rest of the series). But, because of these discrepencies, I've lowered my rating for the book to 4 stars out of 5.

Not Very Happy With This One.......2005-11-07
This is the 7th in Cook's Garrett series ("Sweet Silver Blues," "Bitter Gold Hearts," "Cold Copper Tears," "Old Tin Sorrows," "Dread Brass Shadows," "Red Iron Nights," "Deadly Quicksilver Lies," "Petty Pewter Gods," "Faded Steel Heat," "Angry Lead Skies," and "Whispering Nickel Idols").
BTW: At the time of this review, this book is long out of print. It's tough to find anywhere. As an alternative, look around for the SFBC's "Garrett Investigates." This book is part of that collection.
My 2nd least favorite of the series.......2002-10-05
While this story does have it's good moments and even funny moments, it's rampant anti-gay attitude puts me off completely.
PI Garret back in action.......1998-08-21
I don't know how this book escaped customer review. The whole PI Garret series is incredible. The odd mixture of classic Sam Spade PI in the fantasy world of elves, dwarves, centaurs, the generations old war is so entertaining. I could have been a flop, but Glen Cook pulls every book off in style, leaving me waiting for the next one. MORE MORE!
Book Description
Battle is joined...
It is 1745. The forces of the Boy-King have decimated Milecastle. The Thane is dead, another chosen, and Mary Campbell has been taken by the Boy-King as his unholy bride.
The town is a scene of carnage and the Watchers have failed...but they may yet have a chance at redemption. Can Martin be a leader to his people in their time of need?
And can Sean fulfill his oath without losing his soul?
Neither have much time to consider, for the Boy King is on the rampage...and his heir is waiting to be born in the Blood Chapel of Ross-Lynn.
Customer Reviews:
The epic battle continues!.......2004-04-10
Part 2 of the Watchers trilogy picks up right where "The Coming of the King" left off. Milecastle has fallen, with most of the Watch dead. Martin must overcome the loss of his father quickly and take up the position as the new Thane. Martin pushes further south to warn the people of the coming black horde and continue to fight against the Others, while Sean chooses to follow Campbell north to find Mary and save her from the clutches of the Boy-King. Hopefully they can accomplish this before the ceremony can take place that will continue the dark royal lineage of the Others. With each town the black horde conquers, their numbers grow, and the hopes of men and only men dwindle. Will the two boyhood friends accomplish their tasks?
William Meikle does a great job of enhancing the depth of the characters in this novel. He also quickens the pace a little bit. Since introductions were made in the previous novel, more time can be spent in this novel on action. You will also find that the author has a few surprises up his sleeve in store for the reader. It is not often that one can find books in which the outcome is not always in favor of the "good guys." Thus, the plot is not always predictable and the reader is in suspense throughout the duration of the book. As in the previous installment, Meikle weaves together more history with his fantasy rather effortlessly. So much so that the tale is almost believable. You will find yourself turning page after page wanting to find out what happens next!
Any fan of epic dark fantasy novels should try out this series, and anyone who has already read the first book should be itching to get their hands on the second. Set aside an evening to read this book, for you will want to devour it in one sitting. I love this short series, and I anxiously await the coming of the final part of this trilogy, "Culloden," as well as anything else this superb new voice in horror fiction has to offer.
The "Other" way North..........2003-09-22
The Thane is dead, long live the Thane!
The joy as two boyhood pals are reunited is short lived as Martin's new weighty responsibilities as Thane of Milecastle settle about his shoulders, catapulting him into sudden adulthood. Dark events unfold with such speed that he is even denied the time to grieve for his beloved father as he must see to the protection of his people and his town.
Forced yet again to separate from his friend, Sean sets out to save Mary Campbell from the clutches of the Boy King and travels, with her father's aid, into the realm of the Others and men who are not men and only men. A fortuitous encounter with Lennan and the Woodsman strengthens them for the push further north to Rosslyn and Edinburgh Castle itself.
And all the while, the Black Horde is massing...
Will Martin be able fulfill the Protector's wishes? Can Sean possibly rescue Mary before it is too late? Will the Boy King bring about the fall of Derby?
If you truly are man and only man, bury yourself in Meikle's second adventure in his Watchers series, The Battle for the Throne. The author proves his stalwart ability to inexorably draw the reader into this dark historic tale and leave him wanting more. Join the journey as characters we met in the first volume are brought to life once again along with expertly sketched new personalities in this finely crafted yarn brings the saga ever nearer its zenith.
You won't be disappointed...
Return of the Others.......2003-09-09
Battle for the Throne is the second part of the Watchers Trilogy. In the first we were introduced to Martin and Sean, two young men who were tasked to accompany and look after a traveller and his daughter as they made their way through the north of England pursued by the Others, a vampiric race intent on taking the throne of England.
In book two, the characters become deeper and more rounded as the reader learns of their internal struggles and personal feelings and we discover the reason that the Others, led by the Blood King are so intent on finding Martin and his charges.
The book continues where the previous one left off, with Martin taking on the responsibility of leadership as the Others attack the Milecastle that he now commands and with Sean in pursuit of the girl he was charged to protect.
Meikle effortlessly introduces new legends and races as if they had always been part of British folklore and his description of the battles that rage as the Others pursue Martin and his men across northern England rank with the best.
As the last page is turned, Battle for the Throne leaves you gasping for more and hoping that the third book isn't too far off.

Argentine Food.......2002-12-16
We returned from our first trip to Argentina about a year ago. Argentina is great. The food was truly one of the best finds. The food is great - fresh and not spicy. Not what most people from the US would expect. This book came to our attention soon after our return and we bought right away. It is quite a good book. We recognized some of our favorite dishes. For us it was a great find!
Argentine Adventures.......2002-01-15
I'm a timid cook and hate to travel--but I bought this book. Go figure. I've tried several recipes and they've turned out great. Even though there are many recipes for meat dishes, if one doesn't eat meat, there is still a lot to choose from...side dishes, fruits, desserts. Good chicken and Fish dishes. Lots of very interesting information about the distinct regions of this land and about how their regional cuisine is influenced by indigenous and European traditions. Fascinating!
Argentina Cooks.......2001-12-19
I am so glad I chose to expand my culinary horizons via Argentina. It has been a delectable journey exploring a cuisine virtually unknown in the US. I also learned a great deal about Argentina itself. This is a wonderful cookbook for serious cooks--definitely not a coffee table decoration.
ARGENTINA COOKS INDEED!.......2001-12-06
What a surprise and a delight this book is! The recipes have so far proved fool-proof and have pleased even the most jaded and widely-traveled of our friends. Far more than a cookbook, Argentina Cooks is a nice piece of travel writing. Ms. Brooks brings this country, which gets little press in the US, alive. As a person with an academic background in geography, I truly valued and enjoyed her descriptions of Argentina's regions and the ways that geography and culture have influenced each region's cuisine. She adds just enough info. to enhance the choice of recipes. The black & white illustrations are delightful. Color photos would have been nice, but her writing is so vivid and detailed that their lack takes nothing away. An unusual, useful book on many levels.
Argentina Cooks, HURRA!!!.......2001-11-16
I am an Argentinian leaving in the United States, after reading this book I shall for ever be in debt to Ms Brooks.
The recipes are authentic, well researched and elegantly presented.
The traveling information is even better.
Please , Ms. Brooks do us honor, again.

An ideal first book regarding the English Springer Spaniel........1999-03-07
An interesting and informative book touching on all aspects of the English Springer Spaniel, be it in the field, in the show ring, or as a family pet. It also features a super basic training section as well as an entire chapter devoted to the springers health and well being. This was our first book regarding English Springer Spaniels and it assisted us greatly regarding the choice of Ivy, our now 14 month old black and white Springer Spaniel. This book handles the basics and more, and we would rate it as a perfect companion reference.

Essential reading for lovers of oak furniture.......2005-07-28
This is an invaluable reference book on early oak furniture, which is neccessary for anyone who wishes to have an understanding of the subject. It is both full of expert knowledge explained in a clear concise manner and also contains numerous photographs of the furniture which is depicted in an organised chronogical order that clarifies the text.
Excellent book.......2005-06-05
This is a great book, it has so many photos I could not count them, then has them all in the index - a photo of each item, making it easy to locate any specifically. My only complaint is the photos are not colour but it would cost 4x as much (but perhaps would be worth that price).
Simply the best, most informative book available........1999-11-07
This is the most informative book I have seen on all subjects of wooden furniture and does not limit itself to only oak. It describes in great detail the facts on why varying woods were used in each time period due to availability and why only certain trades were allowed to do specific work due to guild laws. The descriptions and photos are amazing, ( WARNING, you will be spellbound for hours looking at these...:) ), and the index at the back of the book uses the best system that I have seen by far, each picture is displayed in thumbnail size pictures and arranged by catagory. Simply look at the index section for chairs, see the thumbnail photo of the one you seek and the page location is written underneath. Family and friends borrow this book so much that I have often contemplated buying a second copy just to be sure of having it around all the time...:) This book will never go out of date. If you only ever buy one book on earlier woodworking, this is the one you must see. Would also make the best coffee table book I've ever seen.... Its BIG, its impressive and its the best, what more could you wan't?

Book Description
This magnificently illustrated work offers a comprehensive view of the textiles and techniques of pre-Columbian Peru. An introduction discusses yarns, dyes, looms, and raw materials; the first of the two-part text examines weaves, and the second considers such nonwoven materials as braiding, felt, and embroidery.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-03-09
I thought that this book would focus on more on the symbolism of the textiles, but I was disapointed. The book was primarily dealing with the technical aspects of weaving a is a little outdated. The images were all in black and white so I could not get a good feel for the textiles.
Must-have for Andean textile classification.......2007-02-07
We used this book and a few others for comparisons with a collection of ancient peruvian textiles at a museum I worked for several years ago. It was very useful and we referred to it frequently. It included all of the techniques used in the museum collection (consisting of 100's of fragments), and had plenty of pictures for examples. Of course the techniques aren't limited to Ancient Peru, but would apply to just about any textiles--(however the pictures are ancient peruvian). I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about ancient or modern textile techniques--a valuable resource in any museum with this type of collection.
Will please any avid textile artist.......2002-07-11
This unabridged reproduction of a 1962 classic should be an essential edition to any textile collection: Textiles Of Ancient Peru And Their Techniques covers raw materials form Peru, weaves unique to the region, and techniques and materials used in nonwoven efforts. The result will please any avid textile artist.

Book Description
How can Jesus be said to be "missing"? The Church has consistently referred itself to conceptions of Jesus during its history, and the world of scholarship has seen a renaissance in the study of Jesus over the past twenty years. In fact, Jesus' place in popular culture has been surprisingly prominent as a result of recent historical study. What is "missing" is not by any means reference to Jesus: what is missing is rather an entire dimension of his identity. In order for us to understand Jesus and his profound influence on global culture, we need to see him within the context of the Judaism that was his own natural environment. No one can be assessed apart from one's environment, but a variety of factors have isolated the study of Jesus from the study of Judaism. The "missing" Jesus is Jesus within Judaism.

More fiction by a kriptorabbi.......2006-12-12
This book is written by the same author of the fiction book "Rabbi Jesus". One of his co-authors is Rabbi Jacob Neusner, therefore you can expect Judaism's Propaganda instead of facts. Bruce Chilton is the same author that called Jesus a "Mamzer" in the book "Rabbi Jesus". I happen to know that Jesus is not missing!

THIS IS A WELL NEEDED WORK, THE BOOK CONSIST OF SEVERAL DIFFERENT WRITERS, THE MOST NOTABLE BEING JACOB NEUSNER AND BRUCE CHILTON. WITH ALL THE DIFFERENT BOOKS BEING WRITTEN ABOUT THE "HISTORICAL JESUS", AND MOST OF THEM ARE INACCURATE, THIS BOOK OVERALL PLACES YESHUA IN THE PROPER CONTEXT. IT SHOWS THAT HE WAS CERTIANLY PRO TORAH AND FOLLOWED THE WRITTEN LAW TO THE TEE. WHILE MOST OF HIS ARGUMENTS WITH THE PHARISEES WERE IN A RABBINIC CONTEXT, AND THE REASON OF THE RUBUKES GIVING BY YESHUA TO THE PHARISEES WAS MAINLY BECAUSE OF THIER IGNORANCE OF THIER ON ORAL LAW, WHILE YESHUA HAD MASTERED IT. THERE IS ALSO A GREAT SECTION WRITTEN ON JAMES BY BRUCE CHILTON.

Book Description
Abenaki artists Gerard Tsonakwa and his wife Yolaikia Wapitaska, working in stone, bone and wood, bring the ancient legends of the Abenaki people into the industrial age through juxtaposition of the stories with their masks and sculptures. This volume, illustrated with many of the works that have toured more than thirty museums since 1992, evokes ancient connections embodied in the legends and lore of traditional peoples.

Blood, sweat and tears - Lots of tears.......2006-03-23
It's not that I disagree with a review of this book, "an excellent read for the black youth of today". I just feel that whatever useful tools and social benefits this book presents, and there is literally a truckload of them, they cannot be segregated.
A Quality comparison.......2002-10-10
The late Louis E. Lomax (1922-1970) wrote this book shortly after Dr. King's assassination. He traces the path of both leaders. He shows the forces that brought the 2 leaders together on many issues. He also show the opposition forces to these men that materialized into assassins. I recommend that you read this book.
