This is the fifth in Steven Saylor's "Roma Sub Rosa" series: murder mysteries set in classical Rome just before the fall of the Empire. Once again, Saylor's sleuth is Gordoianus the Finder, a sort of Sam Spade in a toga, who is hired by the rich and infamous of Roman society to solve their personal and political troubles. This time the powerful politician Publius Clodius is murdered on an open road and as riots break out, the fate of the Republic is in doubt. The plotting is deft and the action -- both physical and intellectual -- is nonstop. Most of the characters here are heterosexual but Saylor (who also writes great erotica under the name Aaron Travis) brings a critical gay sensibility to his tales that forms the cultural and emotional crux of his work.
Book Description
Torchlight flickers on elegant marble walls. The sound of a mob echoes in the street. The year is 52 B.C. and the naked body of Publius Clodius is about to be carried through the teeming streets of Rome. Clodius, a rich man turned rabble-rouser, was slain on the most splendid road in the world, the Appian Way. Now Clodius's rival, Milo, is being targeted for revenge, and the city teeters on the verge of chaos. An explosive trail will feature the best oration of Cicero and Marc Anthony, while Gordianus the Finder has been charged by Pompey the Great himself to look further into the murder. With the Senate House already in ashes, and his own life very much in danger, Gordianus must return to a deserted stretch of the Appian Way-to find the truth that can save a city filled with the madness and glory.

I have no problem giving this one five stars........2007-04-15
I must admit that I feel like a "finder" for discovering this series. Gordianus the Finder is a remarkable character. He is clever, but vulnerable, jaded, but a loving father and husband, and he is vividly portrayed by Mr. Saylor. This is an outstanding series, but I truly recommend that it be read in order. This book is the fifth in the series. Saylor covers the peculiar slaying of Publius Clodius, and the fallout that occurred in Rome as result of his murder. In that respect, it is a little less of a mystery, but Gordianus has been asked by two very prominent citizens to find out what actually happened on the Appian Way the day Clodius was killed. Rome was at a very unsettled time at this point in history, and it was the beginning of the end of the Roman Republic. The book illustrates all the conflicting ambitions that were driving Rome at this time. We have the murdered man, Clodius, and the man accused of killing him - Milo wanting power. We also have Pompey and Caesar in the background who also want to control Rome's destiny. These are totally engrossing books, and they've kind of taken over my life right now, even though I continue to read others by other authors, my mind keeps wandering back to wonder what Gordianus is up to now. Highly addicting!
The Fifth Book in the Roma Sub Rosa series.......2006-12-23
Steven Saylor's fascination with Ancient Rome began at an early age. A history graduate and former newspaper and magazine editor, he lives in Berkeley, California. His series of books about Ancient Rome and featuring Gordianus the Finder are extremely popular both here in England and also in America. Anyone who is a fan of Lindsey Davis will love these books too. Steven Saylor brings Ancient Rome to life, so much so that the reader can lose himself in the sights and sounds of the ancient city.
Gordianus the Finder, the investigator of crimes, a man whose skill and integrity have made him much sought after by some of the most important men in Rome. Men who may need a secret to be kept, men who need to know that when Gordianus is working for them he will be discreet and not susceptible to bribery.
In this novel Gordianus the Finder is assigned to a case by the great man himself, Pompey. He is now one of the most important, if not the most important man in Rome, although perhaps one Julius Caesar, may in later times argue with that. Pompey is determined to find out about the disappearance of the high born politician Publius Clodius. His disappearance has caused a great upheaval in the city of Rome, with riots on the streets and bouts of arson taking place. He needs Gordianus to find out what happened to Clodius and quickly before the mob destroy the city.
A fun, enjoyable book.......2006-01-03
I generally read history, not fiction. In fact, until the past year, about 95% of my reading was history. I started reading Colleen McCullough's series of books on Rome, tired of it, and then tried Saylor. I think I've found my author. This book is splendid. Interesting, engaging, never insulting to my intelligence, but never overly dry or expository. The style is elegant and refined, as opposed to the clunky, cliche-ridden style of McCullough. The characters breathe. (For instance, characters can be erotic and alluring, but they're never lurid.) The storytelling is engrossing. I won't comment on the book's value as a murder mystery per se, because I'm not really a fan of the genre. Does it have a sufficient twist? I don't know; I don't care. I enjoyed the book, regardless of its genre.
All in all, a novel written for serious, mature readers, but readers who seek a fun, relaxing book. And after you finish the first, you can look forward to the others, because the central character, Gordianus, is warm, witty, vulnerable, imperfect, and thoroughly human. Someone I can identify with.
By the time I'd finished this book, I had ordered all of the other books in the series.
The Forest Gump of Ancient Rome.......2005-07-30
This volume of Steven Saylor's Roman mysteries continues the high standards of the others. For me, it took a while for the actual mystery to get off the ground, but I found the last quarter rather suspenseful. What I love most about these books is the depiction of how people in the Roman Republic carried on the ordinary business of living from day to day. Saylor's descriptive powers get better and better. Parts of this book are almost poetic. While the major peg of the story concerns the murder of Publius Clodius on the Appian Way, there are a couple of interesting themes in this book. One concerns the relationship between masters and slaves. One of Gordianus's slaves dies in this book, but he gains three more before the book is over. The slaves and former slaves of all the major players figure into the story. The book also concerns the relationship between fathers and daughters. Gordianus's daughter Diana is a teenager now with a strong libido. (Am I the only person who finds Diana disturbing?) In contrast, Senator Tedius's daughter leads a nun-like life of devotion to her father. Several characters from the previous volume return--not only Clodius and his exotically beautiful sister Clodia, but Cicero and Tiro as well. (I do hope that this is the last we've seen of Cicero, though. He always bogs down the plot.) Julius Caesar, Marc Antony and Pompey also put in appearances. (Gordianus is sort of the Forest Gump of Ancient Rome.)
This is a very entertaining book with several comical observations. I laughed out loud on at least one occasion. It's not as sexy as some of the previous volumes, but in many ways it has more heart. There were a couple of places where my eyes misted up. This is a worthy addition to an outstanding series. I'm looking forward to the next volume, RUBICON.
Twists in the mystery and the family.......2005-02-15
I am a devoted reader of the Roman Sub Rosa series. Saylor has a formula going for these books which works very well. The reader gets an intriguing history lesson and a thrilling mystery at the same time. It's amazing how Mr. Saylor can flesh out these novels from actual events and extant speeches. Of course his fictitious private eye Gordianus enables him to do this. The reader experiences legendary people and events through the eyes of a "regular" Roman citizen and his family. And family is important. Saylor always seems to find a way to make the mystery have a twist as well as Gordianus' family story. Mysteries are revealed on more than one level, and that's an important mark of a great novel. I can't make myself give the book 5 stars because I reserve those for books that are life-changing. I didn't feel that way about Murder on the Appian Way, but I did highly enjoy it.
Customer Reviews:
6th dread empire book, very good for sequel.......2006-08-04
this story picks up a few years after the end of the first dread empire trilogy. It deals with the fate of Mocker's son Ethrian and in great detail with the dread empire and efforts of mist to regain her throne in that place. As usual, excellent brutally realistic characterization of primary and secondary characters as is cook's trademark.
Unfortunately this second trilogy had the third book's manuscript stolen from cook's house and was never published, thus ths story continued in An Ill Fate Marshalling has never had a published conclusion.
Back to the Dread Empire.......1997-10-20
This self-contained volume picks up four years after the original Dread Empire series ended. The characters are still recovering from the devestating war that finished All Darkness Met. This time, Cook tells his story from the point of view of both of the former warring sides. Most of the book deals with a sub-plot outside of the main series story-line. RTEW is a must read for fans of the original trilogy, and also worth reading for those unfamiliar with it, since it has many references to those first books. It was the first I read, and it left me determined to find the others!

Sean McMullen, frequent winner of Australia's top science fiction award, the Ditmar, has created a fascinating adventure through time in The Centurion's Empire. From A.D. 71 to 2029, the Roman centurion Vitellan hibernates through the centuries via an elixir made from snow-dwelling insects. Unfortunately, he doesn't possess the antidote for the corrosive substance, so every time he is awakened, his body is more ravaged. His frigidarium is secreted beneath an English village, and as the Danes invade during the Dark Ages, the villagers, in fear for their lives, awaken him. He teaches them Roman martial discipline and they fight off the Danish rabble, but he's so weak that he must return to his cold sleep and await better medicine in the future. He is awakened in 1358 to battle again, this time in France, but it's his next awakening--in 2028--that propels the latter half of the novel into a thrill ride of nanotech-embellished skullduggery, as Illuminati-like factions vie for control of the resurrected hero. The centurion's viewpoint offers both a window into history and a ledge to stand on while peering into the future. Readers who enjoy the juxtaposition of historical novel with science-fiction adventure, as in Ian McDonald's King of Morning, Queen of Day, will appreciate McMullen's expertise in The Centurion's Empire. --Blaise Selby
Book Description
In the year that Mount Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii, the Roman Centurion Vitellan set off for the twenty-first century as Imperial Rome's last human-powered time machine. He killed an unfaithful lover by just letting her grow old, but her hate pursued him across seven centuries. In 1358 he stood with a few dozen knights against an army of nine thousand to defend the life of a beautiful countess....and earned a love that would conquer death. Now Vitellan has awakened in the twenty-first century, a bewildered fugitive, betrayed and hunted in a world where minds and bodies are swapped and memories are bought, sold, and read like books. But worst of all, a deadly enemy from the fourteenth century is still very much alive--and closing in.
Customer Reviews:
Australian SF Reader.......2007-08-01
Vitellan the Centurion has a chemical invention that allows him to travel through time, in a sense. This is the good old fashioned freeze me up baby type of method, however, so its more of a long wait, than travel.
He has enemies that pass down a vendetta through time, as well as allies that do the same thing, and it comes to a head in the current day.
No Flow, Didn't Care About the Character.......2007-02-05
I read all the good reviews and was looking forward to receiving this book. I was extremely disappointed. Although the premise was excellent, I found the story to be jumpy and hard to follow. Just when you got to know characters, it was time to move on. I kept waiting for the 'real' part to actually begin. There was no flow and I couldn't have cared less what happened to the hero in the end. I never even read the last 60 pages. I just couldn't do it.
Roamin' Roman in the 21st Century.......2003-11-05
Getting books from Australia must be very hard, which explains how difficult it is to find Sean McMullen's works here in the States. Centurion's Empire predates his Greatwinter Trilogy books and it appears that the author was still learning his craft while writing this novel. The book starts slowly, which is normal in a time travel novel, but don't let the slow start get you down. Once our Hero finally reaches the 21st Century, which is about page 150 or so, the book is non-stop action and becomes incredibly fast-paced. I guarantee you'll like the book more after this point.
While I enjoyed the book, it is evident that this book was written in the mid-90's. Like many books from that era, it overestimates the rise of computer and nano-technology to point where it becomes very unbelievable that the advances described in the book will be with us before 2030. We have William Gibson to thank for this and it seems that McMullen tries to imitate that style and that maybe of Stephenson in Snow Crash, instead of exploring his own style, which is quite wonderful as anyone who has read and enjoyed his Greatwinter Trilogy can tell you. However, I highly recommend this book and hope that this author continues to write and gets the recognition he deserves on this side of the Pacific.
Solid but Not Excellent.......2002-11-30
This is an unusual time travel novel by the inventive Sean McMullen, the author of the very entertaining Greatwinter Trilogy. In this book, time travel is accomplished one way by suspended animation technology discovered by a group of Etruscans. The hero is a Roman Centurion and this book is the story of his experiences while emerging from the ice episodically over the last 2000 years. The central character is presented well and the first half of the book, covering classical Rome, Barbarian age Britain, and the high Middle ages, is entertaining. The second half of the book, dealing with the immediate near future is an attempt at a cyperpunk type adventure novel with a very convoluted plot and many of the stock tricks of this sub-genre. It is less interesting. Worth buying as a paperback, though not as a hardcover.
...[sounds like] Xena again.......2002-04-01
Not, admittedly, up there with his Great Winter series, this is nonetheless and inventive and involving book with a rarely depicted, these days, although common in earlier ones, one way time travel plot.
However, McMullen uses this trope in a way I have never seen before. Equal parts well researched history and future speculation leads to a real feel of the spanning of centuries. (Ours is overlooked, which adds to the effect.)
Xena's jump decades into her own future in (I think) the fifth series HAS to have been drawn from this. With the combination of potion and freezing? I know. There are a lot of heads and a few bodies on ice somewhere, but this was just too close for comfort.
When as and if I get around to reviewing the three (so far) books of Great Winter they will all get 5 stars. This gets 4 only by comparison.

Great start but..........2003-02-18
This first volume is a story of two young brothers and junior officers coming of age in the same Roman legion on the German frontier. While some words are devoted to the politics and history of the time (A.D. 72 under Vespasian), the focus is on the brother's' rivalry for honors and women. The problem is that if you read this you will wish there were many more volumes in the series, but I have a feeling something bad happened to author or publisher. The name for the 2nd vol., set in Britain, changed. Some reviewers pan the third volume. The series stops far short of having the Appius brothers fight their way through all the frontier provinces (as the broad maps imply), and over as many women, and eventually try for the Imperium?
Book Creations, Inc. (Kent Family Chronicles, Wagons West) hired a capable and informed writer to fill out its plot for the series. The author is comfortable with Roman terms in context rather than ostentatiously didactic. I developed a respect and interest in the characters-Romans, slave, or free German-perhaps because all were handled sympathetically and we see them in their familes and marriages as well as on campaign as soldiers or warriors. Good maps and illustrations.
GOTTA READ.......2002-12-08
You know the plot.
If you have ANY imagination, ANY lust for adventure, a desire to be really gripped by a book, THIS is the one ( of two ) to read.
Unlike many novels, one becomes involved with both sides of the conflict and can empathize with both the "good guys" and the "bad guys". In reality, there are none the way the story is presented.
BTW, the second of two is the sequel: The Barbarian Princess.
The third: The Emperor's games....... buy at your own risk
One of the best historical novels ever written on Rome!.......1999-07-27
This first book of Damian Hunter's fabulous trilogy paints a vivid picture of life in ancient Rome. The text is remarkably accurate, from details of how to wear armor to what Roman soldiers did in boot camp and as duties in the legions. Excellent work that should definitely be reprinted!
Roman military fiction at it's best!.......1997-11-13
The story of two half-brothers, one noble, the other freed, and their training as young centurions, first postings in Germania, and their rivalry. Set against the backdrop of the early Roman empire, first half of the first century A.D., the writer gives excellent detail and conveys a feeling of being a participant in the action. The first of a series. You won't want to loan it out!

Storybook Cakes, stepbystep guide to creating enchanting novelty cakes.......2005-10-08
I received this book and was enchanted with the many cakes I can make. The instructions are very clear and well worth the price of the book. I was very happy with my choice. Thank you Amazon.com
Love it!.......2005-04-02
I really love this book. Instructions easy to follow and the pictures are fabulous. I also love the matching cupcakes. Great book to start working with fondant!
Inspiring.......2004-10-11
Beautiful book, with cute ideas for (mostly) kid oriented cakes. What I loved is that with ever design there is a suggestion for matching cupcakes within the theme, and a suggestion for slight changes in the original design that give you a total different look. Very nice and inpiring pictures. I'm giving it four stars because I am used to the elaborate 'how to's' in Debbie Brown's books and find those directions (and step by step pictures) better. This one is definately one every cake decorator interested in sculpted fondant cakes must have.
Book Description
In Horse Housekeeping, Margaret and Michael Korda (she is a successful novice- and training-level eventer and he is the author of Horse People) provide everything you need to know to set up a barn of your own and care for your horse (or horses) at home.
Authoritative, inspirational, highly accessible, full of common sense and down-to-earth advice, all of it based on twenty-five years of experience, the Kordas' book is a basic resource for anybody who wants to keep horses in a safe, content, healthy, and cost-effective way at home, from detailed lists of things you need to have on hand to the basic (and not so basic) dos and don'ts of horse care. Divided into such useful chapters as "Fencing and Paddocks," "The Barn Routine," "The Care of the Horse," "People," "Feeding and Caring for the Horse," "Tack," "Horse Clothing," "Equipment," and "Care for the Aging Horse," it is helpfully illustrated and written in a voice that is at once informative, supportive, and full of funny (and not so funny) stories about horse housekeeping. The Kordas offer a unique and reliable guide to horse care that not only will be invaluable to beginner and experienced horse owners alike, but also is astonishingly readable.
They take you through the steps of deciding if having a horse barn is practical for you, including helpful suggestions on space-saving barn designs, creating pastures, building fences, sample exercise routines, the right feed, the basics of horse health care, and the equipment needed for both horse care and property maintenance. This detailed, user-friendly compendium of down-home wisdom, entertaining stories, and straightforward horse sense will help you to set up a barn the right way, so you will have time to actually ride your horse.
Customer Reviews:
Not Very Useful.......2007-03-12
The authors suggest that this book contains practical knowledge for the person thinking of keeping a horse. I found very little of their prattling useful. The authors have several full and part time employees and apparently, a limitless bank account to spend on their hobby. Along with the many ridiculous suggestions that would make you think that keeping a horse is rocket science, the reader will note a large degree of arrogance. This is mostly directed towards the "help".
A thorough, basic coverage for newcomers to the horse world.......2006-04-03
Understand what you're getting into by owning a horse before it ever hits your pasture with Horse Housekeeping: Everything You Need To Know To Keep A Horse At Home. From setting up the barn and checking fencing to understanding feeding requirements, common health issues, and even how weather affects the horse, the authors provide a thorough, basic coverage for newcomers to the horse world. Adding interest to the practical information are stories about horses which offer case histories and often funny reflections.

Great close-ups of the marbles!.......2000-10-19
There are several things that make this book a stand-out. The first is the basic information about the types of marbles (antique, machine-made, modern) and the makers of the marbles. If you're looking for extensive historical information, this may not be the book for you. But if you collect marbles and are interested in good, basic information as well as tons of photos (most enlarged so you can see every detail) of a wide variety of marbles, this book fills the bill. While I'm no marble expert, I learned a grat deal from reading this one!
Book Description
This exploration into the structure of various weaves provides an understanding of how each weave works, guiding weavers to design and weave their own beautiful fabrics. The underlying principles that govern a particular kind of structure are explained, as are modifying the basic draft and choosing fibers and yarns. Comprehensive and detailed, the book covers plain weave, twills, satin, waffle weaves, distortions of the grid, three-element weaves, loom-controlled double weave, Bedford cords and piques, loom-controlled pile weaves, and crepe weaves.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, essential for really understanding weaves.......2007-08-17
I was very impressed by this book. I just picked it up a few days ago, and already have a much better understanding of what in a weave structure makes stable cloth, what to expect from different weaves in terms of draping and breathe-ability, working with Z and S-spun yarns, and even a bit about what to expect from different fibers (although this is not the focus of the book.) The construction of this book is also excellent--it's a heavy, hardbound book with coated paper and clear, well-shot photography. I'm excited to have this in my weaving library and highly recommend it.
Great for your reference library.......2007-04-05
Alderman is one of those rare combinations of artist AND teacher. The photographs grab you first. The charts are clear. The explanations are detailed enough for beginners. The various weave structures are charted for 2-, 3-, 4- 6-, 8-, and more-harnesses, as each structure may allow. Those new to weaving might find the directions less intimidating if they read the first two chapters before skimming the later chapters; the explanations will make more sense. This is a good boost to your creativity as well as a source to better understand weave structures.
Worth every penny - a great weavers book.......2007-01-15
I bought this book at the same time I purchased Twill Thrills, and couldn't tell you which one I like better. Mastering Weave Structures is a must have for every weaver, especially new weavers, or anyone wanting a better understanding of why things look the way they do, and how to make something look the way you want it to. Loads of beautiful pictures are inspiring. A great book for weavers of all levels.
Mastering Weave Structures:.......2007-01-03
I am glad I ordered this. Is a classic weaving book and should be used for a long time
Great Fun.......2006-08-05
I have been weaving my way through this book. It has been a blast. The photographs are beautiful. I have learned many things and am enjoying each structure.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A610114. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Although computer-processing power has increased dramatically over the past few decades, minimizing computation time is still critical when conducting numerical aerodynamic analyses. One area where this is evident is the grid generation routines used in most code for this area of research. While many more sophisticated grid generation techniques are available, algebraic grid generation is still in use today due strictly to efficiency. Computational efficiency is of particularly great concern during analyses that involve motion of the surface being analyzed, since computing a new grid at each time step is often required. Unfortunately however, few if any, algebraic grid generation routines exist that are powerful enough to produce a grid with no overlapping gridlines and minimal distortion, yet still minimize computation time. As a result, the purpose of this thesis was to design such a routine. The end result is a C-Grid generating routine with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) called Astro Grid.
Book Description
When it comes to deciding on the size of a home or living space, one question must be asked: How much space is enough? Americans often relate "enough" space to dimensions, rather than to how a space will really be enjoyed. In Blueprint Small, Michelle Kodis examines small spaces (each 1500 square feet or less) from a wide spectrum of locations, budgets, and individual styles-each chosen because they illustrate that scaling back in size doesn't have to mean scaling back in comfort, spaciousness, or beauty. From a sleek urban apartment to a funky mountain home to a renovated beach house, Blueprint Small reveals how smaller homes invite rather than overwhelm, comfort rather than alienate. The projects offered here represent a variety of functions, locations and environments, combining the technical aspects of building and using small spaces with the stories of the people who live in them. Blueprint Small invites you to explore inspiring and imaginative ways to inhabit smaller spaces, and still live large. Michelle Kodis is a freelance writer and editor based in Telluride, Colorado. She is the author of Love Scents and The Telluride Cookbook; she has also written for The San Francisco Examiner, The Oregonian, and Backpacker magazine.

Beautiful Ideas for Smaller Homes.......2005-02-08
The small spaces in this book represent a spectrum of locations, budgets and individual style and taste, but all were chosen because they prove that scaling back doesn't have to become a sacrifice in comfort, spaciousness, or beauty." ~Michelle Kodis
Blueprint Small gives ideas for anyone interested in building or renovating a small home, office, or retreat space. It could be 240 or 2,400 square feet. I am almost jealous as I view page 14. How I wish for a private little space outside to escape for dinner or to sit in the sun. This is what I miss after selling our home. I need to find a new place with a private deck where my outdoor furniture can live happily. I love how the doors in this book open up to lovely patios and decks and how sunlight is streaming into the rooms making each house look so cozy and inviting.
Contents:
The Joys of California Living
A Cost-Efficient Caretaker Apartment
An Elegant Suburban Retreat
Tranquility Above the Crowds
Something Old, Something New
A Fresh Angle
Trailer Park Living with a Twist
A Neighborly Development
A Small Addition Makes a Big Difference
A Contemporary Slant on a Traditional House
One of the best ideas in this book is a room that functions as a bedroom and an office. Hey, that is my current situation. The designers put the bookshelves between the desk and the bed. That sounds like a great solution and the shelves were high enough that they actually look like a room divider.
As you are in bed, you can see items on the shelves (in cute boxes) on the back side of the bookshelves and on the office side it is filled with books. So this book gave me some design ideas for my current situation.
There are some basic blueprint designs and lots of fun full-color pictures showing what can be done with small spaces. The retreat idea with a swimming pool looks like a great writing location for a writer or could work as a studio for an artist. You would never know the trailer park home is a trailer. That is probably the most interesting house to study. If you have an interest in community gardens, there is section with a number of cottages all placed around a gardening area. The shelving in these cottages helped to save space and made the rooms look so cozy.
While this is not a detailed guide for building your own home, it will give you lots of ideas and some pictures to show an architect.
OK, I have to go reorganize my bedroom/office. This book gave me some great ideas.

VERY INSPIRATIONAL!.......2003-09-24
This is a "must have" book for anyone who needs some inspiration and incentive for turning small spaces into fantastic living areas! Wow! Kodis's book offers a thorough look at creative and aesthetic solutions for all lifestyles. Complete with architectural renderings, floor plans, photographs, and excellent descriptions; the book appeals to a wide variety of tastes.
Although Blueprint Small is an effective tool for getting started on projects, it's also darn good coffee table reading! I've given it to several friends as a gift, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. It's a wonderful combination of entertainment and utility.
Kodis has a very clear and charming writing style that takes you eagerly from one chapter to the next . . . and has you wishing for more! She is professional and knowledgeable, but you don't have to be an architect to understand the book's content. It is truly a pleasure to read.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend it!
Excellent Designs, Wonderful Presentation.......2003-08-29
I'd be lying if I said that most of the designs in "Blueprint Small" are my cup of tea (with the notable exception being the apartment in the Chicago highrise -- amazing!)... I'm more of a "white walls and clean, modern design" sort of person. However, this book does a very good job of showing a variety of innovative and imaginative designs, in a format that shows them from all sorts of angles. It also explains the reasons for decisions made by the architects and homeowners, which is something you don't often hear. Complaints that most people can't afford to do the things shown in this book are somewhat beside the point; if that were the case, "Architectural Digest" magazine wouldn't be as well known as it is. "Blueprint Small" exists in that same realm, where good design is appreciated for what it is. This book is a very good source for ideas for improving your own space; you don't have to hire an architect or an interior designer to appreciate what it has to offer.
"Small Additions" would be a better title.......2003-07-15
Very few of the spaces shown incorporate the entire area the owners live in. Instead, some of these "small" spaces are 500-square-foot additions to much larger homes. It's not much of a challenge to make that work!
This is a hodge-podge of designs with little theme, and Kodis' writing is some of the clunkiest in the home design field. Try any Taunton book, instead, such as one of the books in Sarah Susanka's excellent Not-So-Big House series.
Unrealistic.......2003-05-24
The review for the book gave me the impression that it would deal with the experiences of people who live in small spaces, and give ideas of how to deal realistically with a small space. The book does not seem to deal with the reality that the vast majority of people who live in small homes are on a more conservative budget, and can not afford to do most of the decorating that is done in this book. I will agree that most of the spaces shown were small, but most of the decorations, and the remodelling that have been done, are not within the reach of most people who own small homes. In my opinion, this book is written for people who can afford a very large home, but choose, for whatever reasons, to live in a smaller home. I live very comfortably and have been able to restore my home in stages, but the things that are shown in this book are things that I could only do if I had large amounts of money to spend, or if I worked as a carpenter(and had large amounts of money to spend).
The book is well written, and the pictures are presented in an appealing way, but I would only recommend this book for a someone who has the means to live in a larger house but chooses to renovate a smaller one.

cover deceiving...inside looks something from 70's and 80's.......2005-02-14
I was very disapointed with this book. For a book that was published in 2001 all but a few of the photo's look dated. Way overdone, dark and heavy for today's style. Even the photography has a dated grainy look. Jo credits her parents as the ones who encouraged her to accomplish her dreams by learning. Well Jo, as an interior designer myself with 20+ years under my belt...you need to go back to square one and learn some new material.
This is THE worst decorating book I have ever read.......2003-11-15
If you love clutter, ill conceived floor plans, bad scale and poor color choices; this is the book for you. Jo needs to go back and rediscover the harmony of scale and color. Even the jacket picture she selected of herself and her family is unflattering.
I like the fact that she truly is trying to come up with ideas and ways to cut costs but it looks half done or over done with just too many things going on to take away from the total design.
This is the first negative review I have ever written. I purchased this book for some creative ideas but I ended up recycling the book in my mixed paper bin because it really is "that bad".
sadly disappointed.......2003-03-20
Based on its cover, which let's face it, is how we buy decorating books, this one looked really interesting and quite sumptuous. Unfortunately, the contents did not live up to the cover and featured rooms and ideas that are already beginning to look "dated". There were no ideas for creating a rich or monied decorating style and the text was rather "homespun". Having bought it on sale, I was very glad I hadn't paid full price; I would have been most disappointed.
Glad I Didn't Pay Full Price for Decorate Rich.......2003-02-18
Scan the pages of Decorating Rich for some beautiful photography and interesting ideas. Skip the narrative, as it is labored and dull. It is a good coffee table book that won't make any demand on your brain power, even if you read the text.
Full of great ideas, but not all of them practical........2002-01-09
Jo Packham proves that you can have a beautiful home without spending a fortune. Success depends on buying only what you love and arranging it well, not on how much you spend. Jo starts with a terrific section on creative wall treatments and then continues with various ways to accessorize the home. Many of her ideas are excellent, such as using inexpensive fabrics in luxurious ways. Others sound like she is giving how-to's on creating a window-display, not a home. How does someone use towels that are tied together with beaded tassels, or put wet soap back in the seashell soap dish without getting water drops on the fan underneath? Tucking fancy dishtowels over cupboard doors may look pretty, but they have to be re-arranged each time the door is opened.
All in all, a good book for those who want ideas on creative ways to decorate with what they love without spending a great deal of money.

Great ideas........2006-07-04
This book is worth the time and money. The delivery time was great.
Not so much about quality, and not for the unhandy.......2006-06-10
I will say one thing about Michael Conroy -- he's not a believer in green building unless it's cost-effective, and he's not going to say otherwise. There's no pandering to environmentalists, he is straightforward about who he is and what he's about. If an item or system adds the $$ to his bottom line, he's all for it. That's it, that's the basis of the book. I expected this from the title, but I was still taken aback by the idea that nothing matters except resale value. I guess this is the wrong book for me -- I am looking to remodel for less, but through the use of innovative building materials and smarts gleaned from experts' experiences. Not cost-cutting shortcuts from a braggart interested only in the bottom line at resale time (read his intro).
From choosing economical materials and simplifying floor plans to buying undervalued land .......2006-01-05

From choosing economical materials and simplifying floor plans to buying undervalued land and learning how to follow building codes, this book is the item of choice for any who would do some of the work themselves and understand where to trim costs without trimming quality.
