Some people don't get out much do they?.......2006-09-28
Harlequin Romance? I have them all over the place. The other half reads them and so do I when out of other books. Hey it's printed right? Kate and Jim isn't even near that genre. From everyone crying and whining about Kate I assumed Stabenow suddenly got hit on the head on the way in from the oil field and took off with some strange writing style. She didn't.
It was well done. It worked in nicely. Put me in mind of a relationship I once had and I can understand why it was there. It worked with the developing relationship of Kate and Jim. It also worked with their personalities. I wouldn't have been expecting them to hold hands over the ice flow and blush at each other. They are too red blooded full of life people for that.
Why not the five star? Because by the end of the book I wanted to knock some of the side characters on the head and dump em into a river never to be found. They were more annoying than anything and not because of plot. They were just annoying.
So if your idea of great sex is holding hands over the ice flow.. yeah you might be shocked. Some of us go for more than that. Now excuse me, I am going to go get in trouble with my other half because of "You have that grin on your face again..." Memories
Good reading, but TMI on the sex.......2006-04-07
Dana Stabenow was suggested to me because I enjoy Nevada Barr (Mysteries in National Parks) and Sue Henry (Alaska Mysteries). This was the second Stabenow book I've read. Her writing style is different but I'm adjusting. I've enjoyed the plots and the pages keep turning, but I can do without the descriptive sex scenes, especially when I am reading in the lunchroom at work. I prefer something similar to Sue Henry's style. One scene comes to mind..... "I noticed you have a new bed." "Oh, you did, did you?" That makes me smile instead of turning beet red in public. But what will keep me coming back for more is the Alaska scenery and history.
A Good Mystery-Tainted.......2006-04-06
I'm a fan of Dana Stabenow and have had the pleasure of meeting her at several booksignings when I lived in Arizona. That being said, I also have to say that this book really wasn't as good as some of the others in the series.
The premise of the case (Kate hired to prove the innocence of a convicted murderer who doesn't want to get out of prison)is very interesting and kept me turning the pages.
However, I find myself agreeing with some of the other reviewers who compared parts of this book to a Harlequin romance novel. It seemed to me that every few pages, Kate and Jim were having sex (mainly at her instigation) and it got really old, really fast. I found myself flipping past those parts to get back to the mystery.
I also thought that the figurative chest thumping between Jim and the retired cop went on for longer than it needed to.
I guess what it all boils down to is that I've always found Kate to be a smart, funny heroine, and that's why I like the stories. All this sex business makes her seem like a silly, stupid bimbo, which she most certainly is not. I don't want to see this series turn into a comic opera like the Stone Barrington and Holly Barker series (in my opinion anyway) have.
I give this book 3 stars for the plot, and 1 star for the (ahem)previously mentioned distractions; all of which add up to my overall score of 2 stars.
As I always say, "Here's hoping the next one will be better."
I didn't know I had bought a Harlequin Romance........2006-01-31
If I had know that this would read like a Harlequin Romance novel then I wouldn't have bought it.
Too much bosom heaving and fluid draining for me.
I can understand that Stabenow wants her readers to know that Kate is moving on but TMI on the sex with Chopin.
Mutt as always is the best character.

As funny as Breakup - Dana Stabenow is high form. Despite the complex politic plot running in the background, the insight into Kate and her relations with Jim Chopin was worth double the price of the book. Read it twice upon arrival. Working on reading three and four now. Loved it.

Better than the first MTG anthology........2006-08-23
The stories in this collection offer an excellent glimpse into the world of Magic the Gathering. Each story takes place in unique and detailed lands with fun and original plot lines. When compared to the previous MTG anthology (Tapestries), this book seems darker and more mature, with a greater level of depth to the storylines and characters. I enjoyed it much more, and look forward to reading the other anthologies.
As with most of the MTG books, prior knowledge about the game is not necessary to enjoy and understand the book.
Excellent collection of fantasy........1998-06-23
Like the anthology before it, 'Tapestries', this one again offers a buffet of wonderful fantasy stories. One need not even know what Magic The Gathering is to appreciate the collective works within. The stories are all wildy imaginative, and transport the reader into a multi-verse where magic is as real as the ground beneath your feet.
A personal favorite of mine is "Chef's Surprise", which explains the flavor text on the granite gargoyle card.

The best collection of short stories by Orson Scott Card........1998-03-16
Orson Scott Card is far and away my favorite short story author. Of his collections of short stories, _The_Monkey_Sonatas_ is the best. Each of the "sonatas" is a gripping, tragic short story about we "monkeys." In almost every case, I was moved to tears. If you can find this book, I give it my highest recommendation. It's not in print at the moment, but I'm looking forward to a reprint. I lost my first copy, which I consider to be a separate tragedy. :) If it is re-released, I plan to buy at least 5 copies for backup and gifts. (Hear that, Tor?) Some of them are science fiction, some are fantasy. All are fantastic.

I bought this book last week, and have had a lot of fun reading it! We added a Ragdoll cat to our family last year, and I had been looking for a good book about Ragdolls! It gives history of the breed's origin, the special nature of the breed, etc. It is just what I thought I was buying. If you have a Ragdoll, or are planning to get one, this will be a fun and useful tool for you!

A wonderful amount of information in a little pocket guide ... I enjoyed this book and found it very useful. Whether a Ragdoll is not yet the most enchanting part of your family, or you are already in love head over heels with three or four of these most precious of felines, Susan Nelson's "Guide To Owning A Ragdoll Cat" is the perfect selection for you. Susan knows what she's talking about when describing the soft sweet Ragdoll personality since she's owned by three of these angels herself. The photos are delightfully crisp and clear, picturing a full range of Ragdoll colors and patterns, even the relatively new lynx and flame... and bring out the devastatingly blue eyes that will hypnotize you as if by magic. Susan makes excellent points about the absolute importance of finding a responsible ethical breeder, and makes clear that meeting several breeders and several visits to catteries is highly desirable. She also points out how large some of the Ragdolls can become, and how important it is to properly support their bodies when picked up. Her description of how to make your house Ragdoll friendly (safe), and how to choose toys is invaluable. She stresses the importance of having a scratch tree available. I wish I had seen it before I spent so much time trying to decide about bringing a Ragdoll home... and it has cleared up several questions I had once I was owned by my Ragdolls. I was disappointed too.......2001-08-23
While this book provides an adequate summary of the things I have learnt about Ragdolls, I found it difficult to read; not because the language was too technical, but because the writer seems to lack a proper grasp of how to structure paragraphs and how to move from one topic to the next. I found that some of the information was duplicated in other sections which is unnecessary. I was also disappointed at the lack of variety in cats used for the photos; the same cats appear on many pages. I would have liked to see a range of pictures showing the various colours and patterns. Despite these criticisms, I found the information about travelling with the cats useful and also the section about showing. I wouldn't rush out to buy this book if you are simply seeking more information about the breed; you have probably already found out more on the 'net. However, if you just want to have everything you know about Ragdolls in one spot, it is a good record.

This is a very good reference book for anyone who is buying their first purebred kitten. There is some background information on Ragdolls, advice on finding reputable breeders, care instructions etc. I have found that most cat books are full of fluff and outdated information, but this book I found actually practical and useful. I loved the color photos. Yes, it is a short book and does not give every bit of information about the breed, and if that is what you are looking for then you will not like this book. But what can you expect from a book of this price and size?
BTW, a reviewer below is a bit mistaken. Not nearly all breeders insist upon killed virus for innoculations, only some do.
Pretty little book........2003-12-05
This is an attractive small soft covered book with many beautiful color photo's of Ragdolls and cute illustrations by Tana Monsalve. Unfortunatly, as a previous reviewer wrote, most of the information here could pertain to any kind of cat. It's generally a domestic cat care book; however,there's a short but interesting "how to" chapter on Cat Shows.
I also thought that there should have been diagrams or pictures displayed along with the description of Colors and Patterns. I'm just discovering Ragdolls myself and the myriad of colors and patterns in this particular breed of cat can be confusing to a novice.
It's Not About Any Ragdolls I've Ever Known.......2001-06-13
This is a generic cat book. Substitute Siamese,American Curl,Domestic Shorthair, or the name of any other breed of cat for the word "Ragdoll" wherever it appears and you've got a "handbook" for that breed. And not a particularly good one,either! Some information is missing or incorrect. For example, there is no explanation concerning the use of killed virus for innoculations-something that every Ragdoll breeder I know insists upon. Missing is information on the slower physical maturation of Ragdolls,that they often do not attain their adult size until three or four years of age and that they remain kittens much longer than some other breeds. The Ragdoll is a unique breed (yes,yes,I know- all cats are unique;however, this book is supposed to be about Ragdolls.),but nowhere in this book do I find any references to the special personality,behaviors,and quirks of the Ragdoll. (As I write this my year old Ragdoll male,AJ,is sitting on the table next to the computer,wondering why I use the word quirks. It's meant in a loving way,my "little" boy.)Actually, this book would be a great deal more interesting,informative, and helpful if the author had consulted AJ before writing. I bought this book hoping to gain insights into the Ragdoll cat-a breed I adore.And I certainly did learn something--how to return a book that was not terribly useful or complete.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ragdoll Cats : Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Health Care, Behavior, and Showing (Complete Pet Owner's Manual). The pictures are wonderful! It was terrific to see so many pictures of traditional Ragdolls. I have hoped for a Ragdoll book that wasn't so focused on the breed's history and breeding but on the pleasure of having a Ragdoll. Readers will find the manual very helpful. I especially enjoyed the author's opinion on non-professional breeding. This is a must-have for every Ragdoll fan!P.S. On page 84 is my Ragdoll--Supreme Grand Champion Dixiedolls China.

This is a very factual and easy to read book for young children interested in learning more about the Ragdoll cat and cats in general. Beautiful pictures. Both my daughters loved it and still pick it up just to gaze at the gorgeous fluffy ones!!

Understand the book you are reviewing before reviewing it.
This book is indeed aimed at a young audience, ages 9-12, not grades 9-12. All books in this series are for struggling readers, hence the simple, large text. The series does a great job of getting kids interested in the topic and interested in reading. Adults who want more detailed information about the cats should read other books. This one is for kids.
Idiot's Guide to Cat Ownership.......2001-08-16
That should be the title of this book! I don't agree with the 9-12 grade reading. There is only 39 pages of text, in HUGE letters, like an early reader book, so there is very little info. There's a 2 page spread with a photo of a cat, with words and arrows identifying the parts of a cat- Whiskers, paws, ears! Two pages of Quick facts about cats- short blurb describing things like their sense of smell, hearing, balance, etc. A page of words to know "breeder-(BREED-ur) someone who breeds and raises cats or other animals Vaccination-(vak-suh-NAY-shun)- you get the gist. The info is elementary, and you can get this and more from other ragdoll cat books.Unless you're ten years old and deciding to buy a >$500 cat, avoid wasting your money on this book!

I read this book and was displeased with how it's pictures do not represent the true nature of the ragdoll breed. The information, although correct, was not usefull at all. The book has nothing about owning, raising, breeding, showing, or grooming this breed. I recomend this book only to those who are looking to learn about what the ragdoll cat looks like. \

Just Do It.......2007-06-02
No more thinking, just pick it up. Even with the $130 price tag, it's way worth it. Like most, I missed out on the very limited first edition, but I didn't waste any time on this one. From the layout of the content, to the highly detailed pics, to the openning essay, everything about the book is full on mind boggling. Even the cardboard sleeve on on this thing is tight! Truly for those interested in one of the most soulful artforms.

What a stunning package. For sure a hefty price, but cheap at twice that. This book/DVD documents the Action Reaction project undertaken by tattoo artist Adrian Lee. Partly consisting of 50 full color painted panels that when placed together revealed an enormous panoramic of the state of affairs. A cynical, unforgiving, fact based onslaught of imagery exposing subverted truths and forgotten pasts, inspired in equal parts by Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, Barry McGee (Twist) and Banksy. Outside the studio Action Reaction existed as an anti propaganda campaign involving postering, billboard modification, stickering, graffiti, hotel art modification and the like. And to honor such efforts, the package includes 4 stickers, and patch, featuring some of that work. An accordion style book, once unfolded it stretches approximately 20 feet! The DVD documents the ten month process of the project, as well as the work inside and outside the studio including propaganda postering in the US and abroad, other street work and various related happenings throughout the course of the project. And it comes in a box!

do it. buy it. it's worth far more than the price, and it is much more than a book. opening up all 20 feet of it is an intense experience, on both the paintings side and the process side. it changed the way i look at art.

This is by far the best book I have bought this year. Hardly a book at all, but a package put together with extreme care by the artist himself. Subversive to its core this book brings back the grassroots feeling of a revolutionary desperately trying to wake up the sleeping masses, to pull down the veil of complaceny so carefully put up by the coporate media and government institutions. Adrian Lee dissected his brain and laid it out on the table so that we may see. Don't let that action be in vain. Buy this book. Complete the cycle.

If you love art, you will love this book. Adrian Lee is one of the tightest artists/tattoo artists ever! This book is exceptional! Very well designed! Newton's Third Law states that, "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." I don't wholly agree with that as concept as I feel that acts of war bring on reactive acts of war. So a better quote might be: For every action there is an equal reaction. One can't be certain that this is what Adrian Lee had in mind when creating his work "Action Reaction," but this is what came to my mind when viewing it.
"Action Reaction" is an artistic expression in the form of a 20-foot accordion book. The life size work took up an entire gallery, but in book form it just takes up your entire mind for a while. The work is captivating and raw in the sense that it is bold and truthful. What you see in it is up to you. What I see in it is a reaction to the world as it stands today. In the aftermath of 9-11, in the shadows of war in Iraq, in the depths of the Bush presidency and in the grasp of capitalism, we stand, and Adrian Lee has held a mirror up for us to see the world around us. It isn't pretty.
The artist's stated objective for "Action Reaction" is thus: "Assemble the incalculable bombardment of information that composes an infinite web of trip wires within the brain. Take these paranoid synapses and construct a visual panorama. Highlighting the obvious that is constantly subverted by corporate and governmental (same) interests. A visual display/panorama, the sum of which is fully intended to expose the underbelly of the beast."
The book comes in a box set, accompanied by an assortment of stickers and a patch sporting the logo of skull and crossbones, along with a DVD documentary of the artistic endeavor, two gallery receptions and a time lapsed viewing of the actual painting of the work. All in all it is quite an eyeful...a mind full.
Thought provoking doesn't quite grasp the power of the work. This is more of a call for reaction. In any event, you won't soon forget your experience with this book, nor the name of Adrian Lee. This is a powerful glimpse into one person's political views and his expression of the same in art form.

An outstanding book.......2002-03-12
This book, I found truly remarkable. It shows that prison can reform some people. Mr.Hamilton shows that there is the possibility of rehablilitation in the prison system. The sad part is the death of his mother, and the violent death of his younger brother, that sends him into a life committing crime. His come back however, is remarkable. What he has done for himself and for other immates around the world is good. Helping incarcerated fathers to remain fathers to their children even behind bars. I recommend this book to all those that think the system spends too much of their tax money on people who will never change. It will change your way of thinking.
