Customer Reviews:
Our favorite psychic returns to solve the mysteries surrounding a haunted house.......2007-08-15
A Vision of Murder is book 3 in the Psychic Eye series by Victoria Laurie. In this one, Abby, Cat, and Dave end up investing in a haunted house. Of course they didn't know it was haunted at the time, or two of them would have hightailed it immediately.
I picked up on the overall gist of where the story would go right away in this one. I find that most stories that involve WWII and hidden treasures tend to deal with items being stolen from Holocaust victims. However, Laurie does put her own Abby style spin on things that makes for an interesting mystery nonetheless. I found that enjoyable...watching her piece together things. I was more frustrated watching her this time though since if there is a trap for her to walk into, she most assuredly will.
Dolt, *cough* I mean Dutch continued to grate on my nerves in this book. Abby really has odd taste in men. He's a bit too controlling. Sure, she's a spaz and waltzes into trouble, but he often acted like she was an object he owned...one who should drop everything to baby him, and remain locked up in whatever cage he deems fitting. Bleh.
Overall I am still enjoying the pace and the writing style of these stories and most of the characters. Dave and his reaction to the haunted house just tickled me. I would have liked to see some resolution to Cat's issues at the end. The author left us hanging there. Maybe the next book will cover that. Or perhaps we were meant to assume it would all work itself out. I really don't know.
On the new age side of things, I was fascinated with seeing her relate to a ghostly experience. I liked thinking about the idea that some people have different energies that in fact attract ghosts. Dealing with that aspect of things seems pretty intense. I think I'll stick with working with my rocks thank you very much. :P
On to the next book. :)
Laurie's got talent!!.......2007-07-06
The third installment of the Abby Cooper series is another hit! The Abby Cooper series is the perfect mystery series with an added mix of supernatural!! This novel even intorduces M.J. Holliday, Laurie's lead character in her new Ghost Hunter Series!
In A Vision of Murder, Abby, her sister Cat and Dave buy a rundown house together in order to fix it up and sell it to make a profit. But the downside is that the house is haunted and Dave refuses to work on the house as that the ghost attacked him on his first day. Thus leading Abby to contact M.J. Abby begins to work on the case of the haunted house along with Dutch and Milo, that leads to a cover up murder and many family secrets of that of a jeweler.
Abby is determined to solve the case no matter what, but there is someone trying to stop her and he will go to any means to stop her, by ranscaking her house, office, and attacking her. Which ultimately leads to problems with Abby and Dutch and trust issues. But Abby will be able to save the day and still make everyone happy!
Overall it is a great read just as all of the Psychic Eye mysteries are! They read so fast and grip you in that it seems that reality doesn't exist!
a vision of murder.......2007-04-11
This installment is my favorite in the Psychic Eye series. It's a good, old fashioned haunted house mystery and also introduces us to M. J. Holliday of the new Ghost Hunter series. I enjoyed the depth added to Abby's relationships with Cat and Dutch. The supporting cast of characters is delightful and has followed Abby throughout the series.
Useful information.......2007-04-09
re: magnets & ghosts. . . . I usually shy away from the 'paranormal' mysteries but Abby seems more normal than 'para' - especially compared to her family! I do enjoy this series and this entry in particular as my mom grew up near Detroit during WWII and it was interesting to get another little view of what it might have been like there and then.
Well Done.......2007-03-06
Psychic Abby Cooper invests in a fixer-upper with her sister, Cat, and handyman Dave. Abby takes a month off from doing psychic readings to fix up her own house and the fixer-upper. Those plans are changed when her boyfriend, FBI agent Dutch Rivers, is shot and she has to nurse him back to health. Abby does work on the fixer-upper whenever she can but work stops when she and Dutch spot the ghost of a beautiful blonde which disappears before their eyes. Abby has already had visions about the house and now her psychic ability is telling her that the blonde woman had been murdered. When Abby and Dave's houses are both broken into and Abby is attacked, she realizes someone or something is trying to keep her away from the house. But when Abby finds a box hidden in the house and has another psychic vision about the woman, she knows she has to find the killer, even though Dutch is vehemently opposed to her getting involved. When Abby's office is broken into by someone searching for the box and another person is murdered, she is more determined than ever to find the killer.
"A Vision of Murder" is a well written, well done mystery. The psychic elements are very believable. Author Victoria Laurie does a great job describing how the psychic mind works, saying Abby's visions are a sensation like a telephone ringing in another room, only they are in Abby's head. Even though Abby is on vacation, she still has a chance to help people with her psychic ability which makes for some of the most interesting parts of the book. Abby's ability to tell if someone is dead merely by looking at their photo is also interesting. Abby is a very real heroine with some real problems, most noticeably the relationship with her uncaring parents. It's her relationship with other people that help make her such a great characters, especially her long-distance friendship with Medium Theresa; her friendship with handyman Dave, who will do literally anything to help her; and her friendship with her sister Cat. Her relationship with Dutch is one of best written parts of the book, the arguments they have are very realistic. And Abby's attempts to take their relationship to another level are some of the funniest parts of the book. There are other humorous moments, like the protective gear Dave wears when going into the haunted house. Another funny scene involves Cat, a bulldozer, and a police car. The mystery itself is nicely plotted, although there's never much doubt about who the murderer is. Finally, while Victoria Laurie introduces a new character, M.J. Holliday, who now has a series of her own, she does it so that M.J. fits right into the storyline rather than as a promo for the new series.
"A Vision of Murder" is a great mystery. Highly recommended.

my favorite book.......2004-07-11
This is by far my favorite book of all time (followed closley by Tolkiens "Lord of the Rings" and Goldmans "the Princess Bride". This is the kind of book that will leave a lasting inprint on your soul. Passages like, "Rest you gentle, sleep you sound", "Lancelots not the only one who counts",the way Trystan refers to Arthur as "my commit" and the infamous opening paragraph "Catch the lightning, friend. Chain the wind." those are things that will be with me all my life, images that will apear in my dreams and come to my lips when i least expect him. I just saw the movie "King Arthur" and i came home and read "Firelord" The way Godwin writes can not be contested, cannot be matched, cannot be out done let alone reproduced.
one thing i feel compelled to add, this is the version of Trystan that i fell in love with, now i'm a bit of a Trystan junkie. How can any woman resist that screaming harp like the sea?
Highest Recommendation.......2002-02-28
I recently discovered that I had somehow misplaced this book. Thankfully I am able to purchase another via Amazon.com--or, at least, that is the game plan. As such, this is the reason why I presently find myself at this place, and for no other reason I have decided to place my thoughts here for you review.
Now, if you are reading this, I presume you are considering reading/purchasing/obtaining Mr. Godwin's novel. Let me give you a bit of advice. It is simply the best retelling of the Arthurian legend I have come across. Moreover, it is not only one of the best novels I have read, but one of my favorites. I rank it along with Herbert's Dune, McCullogh's The Grass Crown, Steakley's Armor, Heinlein's Starship Troopers, Forester's Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, Niven's Ringworld, and LeGuin's A Wizard of Earthsea--all old time favorites.
To be sure, others may have a different view. But let me give you more to think about.
You should note that this book has received a number of awards--though I am unable to name a single one at this time. You will discover their identity when you get your copy of the book.
I have read this book every two years since I first picked it up in the early 1980s. While my copy is regrettably quite dog-eared and now mysteriously lost, it maintained a proud place in my library.
My knowledge of the Arthurian legend stems from what I consider to be an extensive review of literature on the genre. I even took a class on the subject way back when in college through my alma mater's Arthurian studies department (yep, they actually had such a thing--though I pursued aero/astro engineering). It was the only book the professor recommended, which gave me a rewarding feeling for I had already read it several times before hearing such.
I rank this book as an exceptional novel and give it my highest recommendation. It is a rare find indeed.
LIFETIME FAVORITE BOOK.......2001-09-02
THIS BOOK HAS BECOME A CHERISHED RAG THAT I FEEL COMPELLED TO READ SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR BECAUSE I HUNGER FOR THE BEAUTY OF IT.I'M SURE I HAVE READ THOUSANDS OF BOOKS IN MY LIFE, BUT NONE STRIKE LIKE THIS ONE. I LAUGH OUT LOUD AND CRY TEARS EVERY TIME I READ IT. I THUMB BACK TO CERTAIN PARTS JUST TO REREAD THE INCREDIBLE PROSE, A TURN OF PHRASE, OR PART OF THE DIALOGUE. I LACK THE WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE AWESOME POWER OF THIS BOOK. WHEN YOU READ THIS BOOK YOU WILL SAY "NOW THAT'S HOW IT REALLY MUST HAVE HAPPENED!" THE CHARACTERS ARE SO REAL TO ME I HAVE DREAMED ABOUT THEM.THEY ARE THE STANDARD BY WHICH I JUDGE ALL OTHER KING ARTHUR NOVELS-AND FIND ALLOTHERS WANTING.PARKE GODWIN HAS CREATED A GUINEVERE I GET MAD AT BUT JUST CANT DISPISE.ARTHUR I WOULD HAVE FOLLOWED NAKED AND WEAPONLESS UP MT. BADON.TRISTAN IS SO REAL AND TRAGIC I CAN HEAR HIS HARP SCREAM. THE ONLY BAD THING I CAN SAY IS THIS BOOK LEAVES ME YEARNING LIKE A DRUG ADDICT WITH NO MORE DRUGS. I'VE READ EVERY PARKE GODWIN BOOK I CAN FIND.FOR MERCY'S SAKE WRITE MORE!!I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO GET A BOOK BACK IN PRINT. IT IS A SUPRESSION OF ART TO LET BOOKS LIKE THIS GO OUT OF PRINT.I HAVE READ SO MANY KING ARTHUR BOOKS MY FAMILY THINKS I NEED THERAPY, INCLUDING WHYTE,WHITE,BRADLEY,STEWART,CORNWELL,LAWHEAD,WOOLEY,MILES ETC.NONE ARE AS GOOD.I'LL KEEP READING WITH A HOPEFUL HEART.ANY RECCOMENDATIONS?IF I KNEW WHERE PARKE GODWIN LIVED I'D CAMP ON HIS DOORSTEP TIL HE WROTE MORE.YOU DESERVE A PULITZER,PARKE!
Delightfully Down-to-Earth Arthur.......2001-07-16
After far too many retellings, overtellings, and revisionist reworkings, King Arthur was in desperate need of this book. Godwin does away with almost all the mystic trappings of the legend, and creates a historically inspired Arthur and Camelot, using the real Britain of the post-Roman era as the setting. Most of the elements of the legend - from Lancelot's affair with Guinevere to the Holy Grail - are in here, but in forms that leave off the excessive romance and the excessive piety.
At the heart of it is Arthur, a man above men but still a human. His narration is full of wit and of regal bearing. Here's an Arthur who could lead men but who is someone we'd want as a friend. The best elements of the old legends are in him, with only a touch of the modern "feet of clay" that too many writers insist on giving him.
This is probably the best retelling of Arthur since Tennyson, and is a must-read for Arthurians, for English history buffs, and for those who love a good yarn.
the best Arthurian retelling, bar none.......2000-11-30
Not even "The Mists of Avalon" can touch it.
Arthur himself narrates, and while his voice and sensibilities may strike some as too modern and cynical, he fits the portrayal of a chaotic, Romanized society awaiting its inevitable doom. Arthur also provides an immediate hook into the story, which contains some of the most recognizably human characters I have yet found in an epic. Finally the knights are real, the whole bloody lot of abrasive, pigheaded men torn between loyalty to their clans and to the whole of Britain. Finally the women are real; Morgana is a very interesting twist on a Faerie queen, and Guinevere, long cast as a scheming adulteress or a weepy deadweight, at last stands as Arthur's equal and his most worthy opponent. As Arthur says, most kings have wives, but he had a queen. (Btw, if you like her here, read "Beloved Exile.")
The tale is a bit nonstandard, in that Arthur's father Uther is merely a Romanized noble, not the king of Britain; Arthur suceeds Ambrosius directly. Merlin is mostly absent, as is any overt magic, and when he does appear is anything but a bearded old man. Religion is largely a catch-as-catch-can issue in the complex, often self-destructive British society; there is also no Grail.
Instead, we get a look at a gritty, tumultuous period in the history of Britain through the eyes of a flawed, ambitious man who develops vision and compassion while stumbling towards true nobility. I cannot speak for historical accuracy, but the way things fall apart is stunning in its subtle inevitability; the characters react to each other and their environment in ways that seem natural, not forced by a preordained plot. Arthur and Guinevere's last effort to redeem themselves and patch things together has such desperate, moving potential that I find myself pleading with fate each time the story marches, naturally and relentlessly, to Camlan, where Modred fulfills his destiny.
And the ending is priceless.

The implausable made comprehensible.......2002-01-18
Sorry, I love big words. The fiction was not impressive, but the science is. Dr Forward is one of the big guns theoretical physics and it shows. He explores the ways impossible science-fiction concepts like antigravity, time travel, or faster-than-light travel might be done (if the gray areas of physics have the right answers), and sometimes ways it could be done (with a lot of engineerng).
Works in the Classroom.......2001-06-05
This is an excellent book for the introduction of physics concepts. By blending science fiction and science fact Dr. Forward puts concepts commonly misundersttod into the grasp of the laity. I have found this book very useful in my Physics courses. My students tend to enjoy it as well. Dr. Forward draws on his background at JPL to give sound techincal explanations and his ability as a science fiction writer to give the concepts life.
WARNING! If you are looking for a piece of fluffy fantasy fiction this is not the book for you.
There are greener pastures, so skip this one.......1999-11-02
I bought this, partially because some of the reviews I saw compared it to similar books by Charles Sheffield, a master at writing stories coupled with science fact essays. This is a hard act to follow, but Forward has been writing for long enough that I was at least hoping for entertainment.
After reading this, I regretfully conclude that this is not a book I would buy, and I wish that I had returned it after reading it.
I found every fiction story was contrived, and not intriguing enough to hold my interest. This was regrettable, as Forward clearly sees some quite amazing possibilities in the high power densities antimatter brings, and the impact of easy travel within the solar system. I did not, however, come away from the stories with a sense of wonder, or a sense that I had "seen the future."
Even were this entirely a science fact book, I would have misgivings. Forward seems quite intent on pointing out the number of patents he holds. At several occasions, I felt the book was moving from entertainment or education vehicle into self promotion. I am not above that myself, but I find it entertains poorly.
Forward clearly understands the material, and explains it well, but the level he chose to pitch it at was not satisfying to me. I felt that he was using a bit too much fancy footwork, and a bit too little solid explanation. See Sheffield's "Dancing with Myself" for a collection of essays with similar focus, but with more meat on the scientific bones.
In essense, a well thought out book, but one that does not deliver on the implicit promise of such a powerful and wide reaching set of technologies.
Technically acurate and ingenious ideas for science fiction.......1998-11-30
As a particle physicist I learned much from this book. When Forward discusses situations about which I know some details he almost always has it right, so I trust him when he discusses situations about which I know little. The short stories that follow the technical chapters are ingenious, although they do not all relate well to the preceding technical chapter. I would like to have had more discussion about the relative probabilities of the various scientific theories yielding useful technology.
very good discussion of exotic propulsion etc........1998-07-07
i bought the book purely for its scientific content and have not read the short stories. but the information concerning exotic forms of propulsion and loopholes in modern day physics is very good. another good book relating to this is the starflight handbook by eugene f. mallove & gregory l. matloff.

A Turkish Delight.......2007-09-23
This is a wonderful cookbook for beginners or more experienced cooks of Turkish food. The ingredients are all in customary American style (no liters, ounces, or "Turkish coffee spoonfuls"). Instructions are clear and concise. Best of all there are closeup photos of many of the finished products - very helpful for those who don't know how the dish should look when served up. I like the Turkish serving utensils and other kitchenware (pepper grinder, wooden spoon) that add to the local scene. I also like the way the book gives the Turkish name of the food and then the American version in each recipe heading. Ozan has done an excellent job of giving all the information one needs to make these delicious dishes.
Ottoman Delight.......2007-08-06
An excellent book for lovers of traditional Turkish food-easy to understand and beautifully illustrated.I have travelled many times to Turkey and have never found an English language Turkish cookbook like this.
great recipes and interesting read.......2007-08-03
Wife loves it and I love the results. Very interesting reading and excellent photography make this a real deal. Worth more...we're looking forward to visiting his restaurant, as we live next to Boston.
Excellent Turkish cookbook!.......2007-06-06
We just returned from Turkey, and I'm already craving the great food we had there. "Sultan's Kitchen" will help me satisfy all my cravings. It's well-organized, easy to follow, and has what seem to me to be authentic Turkish recipes.
Whether you are seeking "the real deal" or just looking for a taste of a wonderful, complex cuisine, "Sultan's Kitchen" is sure to meet your needs.
Excellent Cookbook.......2007-03-09
I used to live in NYC and went out for Turkish food every couple of weeks. I moved out to the country where there is not a Turkish resturaunt for at least 100 miles. Missing it, I picked up this book.
Its absolutely excellent. We've tried ten or so things from the book so far and everything has come out delicious. The instructions are simple, the pictures are really good, and surprisingly the ingredients are not too hard to come by. The kebab recipies are excellent. I've substituted paprika for turkish red pepper and it still tastes great. The next time I'm in Boston, I definitely want to try the author's resturaunt. I highly reccomend this book to anyone wanting to try Turkish cooking.

It's all about SOUL.......2007-08-31
Best Friends is the story of how several dedicated animal lovers used all of their resources to become THE foremost Animal Sanctuary on Earth!
Angel Canyon, located in Kanab, Utah is a place where it's all about SOUL.
Best Friends Animal Society/Sanctuary understands that, whether two-legged or four-legged, we are ALL precious souls, who deserve love, kindness, respect and to be treated with a reverence for our precious lives.
That's correct: ANIMALS HAVE SOULS, just like we human animals do!
To think otherwise is to be ignorant, arrogant, speciesist, and one other thing: Wrong.
That is what makes Best Friends so special. They recognize and treat animals as their fellow souls.
We are all in this together. One life. One love. One Soul.
This book captures the love, the kindness, the dedication, and the soul of everyone at Best Friends,
four-legged and two-legged!
My favorite part of the book is the story about the two brother cats, Tommy and Tyson. The cats were born on the streets, because someone wasnt responsible enough to SPAY or NEUTER their cats.
A wonderful woman fed the cats and gave them fresh water, daily. While doing so, she noticed that the two brothers would always walk side by side, with their tails intertwined, as if they were Siamese Twins.
The kind woman couldnt understand what that meant. The woman realized that the cats were in danger, as they always crossed the busy City streets.
So, she contacted Best Friends.
Best Friends glady accepted the cats, and when the cats received a check-up from the veterinarian, the woman finally found out why Tyson and Tommy always walked together, with their tails intertwined: One of the cats was blind!! HIS BROTHER WAS GUIDING HIM ACROSS THE STREET TO SAFETY, BECAUSE HE KNEW THAT HIS BROTHER COULDNT SEE WHERE HE WAS GOING! That was why their tails were intertwined, and why one of the brothers seemed to be guiding his brother to safety......because he WAS guiding his brother to safety!
We can learn alot from our animal soulmates, if we only would take the time to watch them, and learn from them, and bond with them.
At Best Friends, all souls are treated equally, as one family.
That is why Best Friends are so loved around the world: they are the real deal.
I am honored to be a monthly donor to Best Friends' programs. I cant think of anything better to do with my money than to give it to my fellow souls who need it most: The cats, dogs, bunnies, etc of this world who are often neglected, or forgotten, or sent to a death chamber, even though they have not committed any crimes, and even though they are as equally precious as the rest of us.
This book offers a glimpse into the SOUL of Best Friends. I recommend it to any cat lover, dog lover, bunny lover, or to ANY animal lover for that matter.
This is a very special book, about very special souls, at a very special place.
To learn more about Best Friends, and all of the precious souls who live there, please visit: [...]
I hope that you enjoy this book, while cuddled next to YOUR precious cat or dog.
After all, they are precious souls, who happen to be members of the family, too!
Good animal stories.......2007-02-16
This was a good book, but I was disappointed in the ratio of actual animals stories to chapters about the trials and tribulations of getting the shelter off the ground. I appreciate what a monumental task it was, but I was thirsty for more about the animals.
Wonderful book about real people.......2006-04-27
I give this book 2 thumbs up. This is about a shelter for animals in Kanah, Utah. These people poured there hearts in to help the needs of animals. You have to read this book to see what each day consist of sometimes hurtful, but most of all for the good of the animals. We all should take a look at our own pets and give them a big kiss. They are the ones that wakes you in the morning and sees you to bed each night. Not to think of the protection they provide. Great book!
Great book for anyone who loves animals.......2006-02-18
I was fortunate enough to volunteer my time twice helping to take care of the rescued animals after hurricane Katrina.I volunteered thru Bestfriends in Mississippi. It was probably the most satisfying work I've ever done. When I got home I found out about this book and couldn't wait to read it. I cried, I laughed I didn't want to put it down and i didn't want it to end. It made me more determined then ever to visit the sancuary in Utah as soon as I can.It explains how the animal sancuary first got started and all the ups and downs involved in getting it started. I would say to anyone who loves animals this is an absolute must read.
I Loved This Book - Could Not Put It Down - Fell in Love With The Animals!.......2005-12-06
I am a restless reader, usually read a few pages of this, a few pages of that, so it takes a long time for me to work through any one book... but I could not put this book down! The story of the loving, dedicated, risk-everything-for-a-dream group of friends who started the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, is too wonderful, thrilling, cliff-hanging, and heart-warming to be a true story - but it is a true story! Some reviewers find fault with the thoroughness and organization of this history of the shelter, but I think the emphasis of the book is right where it should be, on the stories of the fascinating and endearing animals that shaped the development of the shelter, and the commitment of those who cared for them. The ongoing problem of millions of healthy animals being euthanized at shelters each year, because their people have discarded them, is heart-wrenching, but this book dwells on the positive, and leaves the reader filled with hope and inspiration. The Best Friends Animal Society Web site is also a great place to read "tails with happy endings."

Book Description
From the mid-1860s to the mid-1880s two artistic legends, Paul Cezanne and Camille Pissarro, executed numerous paintings side by side as they worked in Pontoise and Auvers. This book was published in conjunction with an exhibition of 74 paintings and 8 drawings that embody the core of the two artists' collaboration and explores their artistic relationship in detail. The artists' dynamic interaction began with their first meeting at the Academie Suisse, Paris, circa 1861, and continued through much of their careers. To examine the techniques that Cezanne and Pissarro each adopted in response to the other's work, the exhibition and book juxtapose related works by both artists, reuniting many of them for the first time since their creation. The friendship between Cezanne and Pissarro was of considerable importance within the development of early Modernism. An essay by Joachim Pissarro discusses this fascinating interchange and offers new insights into both the shared and the distinctive elements of the two artists' aesthetic sensibility.
Book Description
Autobiographical Jews examines the nature of autobiographical writing by Jews from antiquity to the present, and the ways in which such writings can legitimately be used as sources for Jewish history. Drawing on current literary theory, which questions the very nature of autobiographical writing and its relationship to what we normally designate as the truth, and, to a lesser extent, the new cognitive neurosciences, Michael Stanislawski analyzes a number of crucial and complex autobiographical texts written by Jews through the ages.
Stanislawski considers The Life by first-century historian Josephus; compares the early modern autobiographies of Asher of Reichshofen (Book of Memories) and Glikl of Hameln (Memoirs); analyzes the radically different autobiographies of two Russian Jewish writers, the Hebrew Enlightenment author Moshe Leib Lilienblum and the famous Russian poet Osip Mandelstam; and looks at two autobiographies written out of utter despair in the midst and in the wake of World War II, Stefan Zweig's The World of Yesterday and Sarah Kofman's Rue Ordener, Rue Labat.
These writers' attempts to portray their private and public struggles, anxieties, successes, and failures are expressions of a basic drive for selfhood which is both timeless and time-bound, universal and culturally specific. The challenge is to attempt to unravel the conscious from the unconscious distortions in these texts and to regard them as artifacts of individuals' quests to make sense of their lives, first and foremost for themselves and then, if possible, for their readers.
