Book Description
Lately, Key West is not quite the laid back place that occasional freelance crime-scene-photographer Alex Rutledge prefers. It’s bad enough that the discovery of two dead ex-Navy men one morning?both found swinging on boat lifts twenty miles apart?means grisly work at the indecent hour of 7AM. It’s worse that Alex’s run-in with a chest-thumping new deputy turns out to have ominous consequences when his wayward younger brother turns up in town...and becomes the prime suspect.
Alex knows Tim has messed up his life, but he just can’t believe his brother isn't a killer. As Alex digs deeper, he starts to make connections the cops have missed?but he’s baffled when he finds one of the deceased owns a picture of a young girl who turned to Alex for help many years ago. And when a third man is found swinging on the docks, he knows time is running out for his brother. But what he doesn’t know is that facing the killer may turn out to be the least of his problems...
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyed the setting, plot needed work.......2007-01-11
Florida Keys resident Alex Rutledge is a photographer and, lately, a police photographer. There hasn't been a hanging on the Keys in thirty years and, suddenly, there are two and maybe three. The odd thing is that Alex, rather than a policeman, was the only one at all three crime scenes and he's having a hard time convincing the police the three crimes are not suicide and are related. His problems increase when his older brother, who looks almost like Alex but has a less than clean record, comes to town and becomes a suspect.
I enjoyed the setting of the Florida Keys and, to me, it was one of the most interesting parts of the book. The plot was improbable that, even with so many jurisdictions, the police work could be that sloppy and that Alex could come up with information and connections the police couldn't. But that's my problem with most stories whose protagonists are amateur sleuths. Still, I enjoyed the characters, the dialogue and the setting. It wasn't a great book, but it was an okay read.
Another Great One.......2006-11-06
I have read all of the Alex Rutledge series and if you love Key West these are the books for you. If you do not love Key West get ready to.
5th Book and still worth while........2006-03-08
Well done for the 5th book by the author. The story moves along and provides a taste of the Florida Keys. My only complaint is the author's addiction to building the story that is always tied to Rutledge's personal life in Key West during the 1970s.
Keyed Up.......2006-01-30
Alex Rutledge actually gets into action out of Key West, albeit it is just across the seven mile bridge. Maybe it is that Corcoran's soul is in Key West more than most of the many writers based there, but this latest of his tightly plotted and well written novels has a sense of the spirit of the place that I find in few of the others. The author knows his setting and characters (with Alex Rutledge the sometimes crime photographer, sometimes freelancer, pal of "Chicken Neck" - former Key West city detective, now Monroe County Sheriff, Alex's past and present lovers, associates and now rogue brother, Tim) there is a cast appropriate to the Keys. The actual strange mix of legal jurisdictions - Monroe County, State of Florida, City of Key West and other Keys' cities, the Feds with immigration, shore patrol, coast guard and FBI - has made for the sort of tangle of ambitions, secrets and confusions which a crime novelist of Corcoran's skill can exploit to create a great read.
The everpresent signs spotted by every tourist describing the Keys: "A quaint little drinking town with a fishing problem!" are at work here. We first see Tim in custody, outside the Bull and Whistle after a few of their very cold draft beers. The mysterious coincidences of the Keys: lookalikes, chance meetings, odd meetings of e spouses and old friends in saloons or walking along Smathers beach, which all Key residents know happen, may be the greatest stretchers of readers' credulity, but spend a month in Marathon sometime and the reality of such unrealities will sink in. And then there are Keys' jokes. "jackalope" would not stand a chance there. We wonder throughout about the murders by davit that start the novel off - are they some ironic joke. Only at the end will you learn. And it will be worth it. A word of caution Do not skip ahead and spoil it .
You'll love these books.......2006-01-27
This was my first Alex Rutledge mystery and I've gone on to buy the rest of Corcoran's catalog. These are great books -- some of the best and most nuanced mystery novels I've ever read.

Disappointment.......2007-05-18
Not on par with his other novels, like the Last legion or the Star Risk series who have a similar set up.
A bad mix between "James Bond" and "Walker Texas Ranger". The characters are flat and the abilities of the main character are never fully explained not how he got them on grounds of coming from an alien race.
The plots are simple and easy to guess.

***Don't miss This ***.......2006-07-21
The book covers don't do justice to the content. This is the 3rd book in a series of 4. This is a great read, but don't miss the first 2. It has everything. the series starts with a mystery and crash landing in the first book. It develops into lots of great characters, Politics, seemingly genocidal ET's and successful first contacts and alliances against a common threat. Fans of David Weber, Heinlein, Sharon Lee & Steve Miller, John Ringo, Lois McMaster Bujold and Anne MacCafrey will like these books. The themes are well thought out, and the characters all deal with the choices, sacrifice and agony of war, loss and hope in a realistic manner and sometimes with a little humor and romance thrown in.
Genellan:First Victory.......2000-02-24
This is an excellent story, and a great addition to the two other books in the series. This combines space opera, good believable characters, and a hint of mystery which kept me reading into the night. I just hope there is a fourth in the series, then a fifth, then .....
This book kicked butt from start to finish!.......1999-09-15
The whole series is well written this one leads you on a non stop ride of action and science that keeps you turning the pages i cannot wait for the next one in the series!
I plan on getting the two earlier novels in this series........1998-07-17
Mr. Gier's work reminds me of Steve White's stories, told with a similar feel for the grand tragedy of interstellar war, mixed with the almost heartbreaking courage of the human defenders. Gier's universe is interesting, his science works well and contributes nicely to the flow of events. Good story.
Third Time is a Charm for Scott Gier.......1997-11-11
This book is excellant!!!
I could not put it down.
Scott's writing style has matured during the writing of the Genellan series, and his characters have become more beleivable and human - not superhuman as some scifi writers perfer.
The reader can almost feel the tension and emotion throughout the book, as Scott takes his characters through events that are described in such a way as to seem almost lifelike. The events are described in such a manner that you can close your eyes and view the scenes as the occur. Scott's characters are as lovable and beleivable, with strengths and weaknesses, as those in the Star Wars universe. Even the unreal flavor of the aliens' (ullagi) thought processes seem to be accurately portrayed.
I look forward to Scott's next book; I hope it arrives on the market soon.

Rich and silky, fresh foie gras is one of the world's great foods. But until the mid-80s, due to importation restrictions and without domestic production, none was available here. Michael A. Ginor, proprietor of Hudson Valley Foie Gras, was among the first to establish production of domestic duck foie gras, which excited the livers' current popularity. Foie Gras: A Passion, by Ginor and Mitchell Davis, celebrates foie gras in words and pictures; though it contains 80 chef-created foie gras recipes, accompanied by alluring color photos, the book is best appreciated for its thorough exploration of its subject. Those interested in this extraordinary specialty, and its place in modern American cooking, will embrace the book.
Commencing with a comprehensive exploration of foie gras history, which began with geese domestication in ancient Egypt, and continuing with an exploration of its production and use in Europe and America (there's a fascinating glimpse of foie gras's role in 19th-century Jewish cooking), the book then limns the modern methods by which foie gras is obtained and sold. The authors also address animal rights issues--they maintain that liver-fattening methods respect the birds' eating habits and physiology--and provide notes on wine and foie gras pairings as well as practical purchasing, cooking, and handling information. Recipes such as Caramelized Torte of Foie Gras, Smoked Eel, Spring Onion, and Apple are featured, as are the work of chefs including André Daguin, Emeril Lagasse, Jacques Pépin, and Charlie Trotter. If the recipes are beyond the reach (and pocketbook) of most cooks, there is much else to enjoy and ponder in this singular food book, a vital addition to a culinary library. --Arthur Boehm

"As much a coffee table book as a cookbook, this beautiful celebration of foie gras includes a thorough history of the delicacy and mouthwatering full-page photographs of each of the dishes. Those who get past turning the pretty pages can sample the foie gras inspired recipes ... a veritable who's who of contemporary chefs."

Very bad book!.......2007-10-12
Before buying this product go online and do some research on this product and the truth behind it, you will not buy it after that.
disgusting.......2007-09-10
Embarrasing to write book about this cruel product. Please think twice, or even thrice if necessary, before praising a product like this. Go to youtube and see some films about foie gras!
Food for monsters.......2007-07-31
A book that celebrates a food product that requires torturing another creature to create it. About as appealing as a book on the joys of sodomizing children. The "shame" is not people spoiling Ginor's fun, it's the culture of cruelty that his book promotes.
The lovers of foie gras should expand their sociopathy. Who knows? Perhaps the spleen of a kitten fed only lobster would be even better? Perhaps their own livers will give worms orgasmic ecstasies. Who knows?
A cult that celebrates the pain of others does not deserve to survive. Geese mutilated to make fatter livers? Ducks maimed to make cheap knockoffs? In a wiser time, gluttons had rats sewn into their mouths.
Great recipes, but too much history.......2007-02-13
The recipes are great, well explained, and with phenomenal pictures. I also enjoyed learning how ducks are farmed and how the force-feed process works, so I can better understand why animal right rights activists complain.
However, I find it unacceptable to see so many pages dedicated to the history of Foie Gras, while only 2 pages cover a key part of cooking foie gras, which is how to clean and prepare it. And there are no pictures of that procedure.
Foie Gras: A Passion.......2006-02-26
Chill your bottle of sauterne! Your mouth will be watering - makes a beautiful coffee table book or great hostess gift for a "foodie".

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Lab Owners!.......2007-09-13
Gives you a great insight into this wonderful breed and excellent hints at both home, obedience and field training!
Nice Compendium Of Information On Labradors!.......2004-06-01
Here is an attractive entry by author Virginia Parker Guidry, abook that takes a loving look at America's singular and by far most popular wonder dog, the Labrador Retriever. As Berger points out so well, there are few other animals who draw such love from humans as a dog, and surely the Lab is the most loveable of the breeds. Here she presents the Labrador Retriever in all its wonder and does a yeoman service to the rest of us by enumerating all of the superb qualities the dog has to offer potential human enthusiasts. They are by reputation excellent working dogs, both as field dogs and as guide dogs for the disabled. They are also incredibly loyal, and the news services are often filled with wonderful and heartwarming stories of Labs crawling out on the ice to save their masters, often at considerable danger to themselves. Nonetheless, they stand by our sides.
Therefore, this book, "Your Lab's Life", is the ultimate tribute to the breed, and is chock-full with stories and photos that actively serve to substantiate what might otherwise seem as idle boasts and overethusiastic praise. In fact, for anyone who spends any time around Labs, like me, it is hard nto to use superlatives when describing them. More than one of the stories herein will bring a smile to your face, a tear to your eye, and the idea in your noggin perhaps it is time to consider getting one of these incredible creatures into you rlife, and that of your extended family. they boost the energy level in any room they enter, are incredible chick-magnets, and have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and dissipate depression through their mere presence. This is a wonderful book about what I believe to be the world's most nearly perfect living creature, the Labrador Retriever! Enjoy!
Recommended reading for new owners........2004-03-23
My lab is recently acquired and is 4 years old and is a family pet. I found the book to be very informative in caring and for training. The book covers just about anything you would want to know and would work for puppies also.
Nothing here that you won't find elsewhere.......2003-09-24
It was a good book to read, but it had NOTHING on training a lab how to retrieve. It gave a few instructions on basic dog commands, but I found similar tips in many other books. If you are looking for a guide to training your lab, this isn't for you.
Great Book ...Missing information.......2002-09-27
I ordered this book based on all the reviews thinking that this was the one and only Lab book needed.... I have 2 PureBreed Labs and in speaking both with my Vet and other breeders thought I may have a litter. This book does not support the idea of breeding or yet the reproductive aspects of the Lab at all. If someone plans to own a Lab just for a pet and doesn't intend to ever think of it's reproductive health or need that information then yes..... this is a SUPER book! I agree with the author's advice about neutering and spaying to keep the population down, however feel for this to be called the only book you'll ever need... I disagree. Look else where for the reproductive information on your beloved pet! The format and layout of the book as well as the reading material is better than most books I've read. I will now be looking for yet more books on breeding.

Book Description
In the mid-1930s, there was daily publicity of notorious gangsters being captured by F.B.I. agents. George 'Machine Gun' Kelly allegedly labeled the celebrated agents who captured him as 'G-Men' for 'Government Men' and this acronym for F.B.I. agents has stuck. A phenomenal G-Man craze erupted in the United States. Every kid in the country wanted to be a G-Man and the toy industry responded by creating a large variety of toys. This much-needed guide contains 600 fantastic color photos of G-Men and F.B.I. antique toys and related collectibles from the mid-1930s to the present. There are guns, badges, fingerprint sets, cars, cereal premiums, whistles, hats, Disney items, motorcycles, knives, books, walkie-talkies, board games, and much more in this nostalgic guide, including some of the rarest items. Current values are given, as are dates when possible. 1998 values. AUTHORBIO: Harry Whitworth worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. for more than 32 years, first employed as a stenographer in the Criminal Investigative Division at FBI Headquarters. He married his wife, Jody, in 1965, and in 1984 the two began collecting G-men FBI toys collectibles. Jody is an antique dealer, toy inventor, and avid collector of clowns. REVIEW: This book educates the general public, antique dealers, and toy collectors about the various G-Men and FBI antique toys and related collectibles that have been produced from the mid-1930s to the present. It helps to preserver these items as part of the history of the United States.

If you like big home-design coffee-table books with sumptuous photos of chic interiors and gushy but vapid copy, and if you like those reductive but irresistible "personality" tests that show up with regularity in magazines like Cosmopolitan and Mademoiselle, you'll most likely love Personal Space. Here, British lifestyle journalist Worsley declares that there are six basic types of living styles--Pure, Maverick, Wild, Sensuous, Easy, and Urban--and throws in a few self-quizzes to help you determine which is right for you. But this flimsy faux paradigm is really just an excuse for a flashy, splashy interiors viewbook that nonetheless offers up some delicious view of the usual spaces: living room, bedroom, bathroom, hall, and kitchen. Some have luminary lineage, like T.E. Lawrence's book room at Cloud Hill, Vanessa Bell's charmingly stenciled-to-death farmhouse, and the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California, designed by Julia Morgan--although it's frustrating when Worsley refers to famous interiors without showing us good pictures of them (or any at all), and often it's hard to be sure if the famous interiors mentioned in captions are indeed those featured in the photos the captions are keyed to. Add in Worsley's Britishly tortured syntax ("This book is about how you can develop the ability to hold the style of your home together by the force of your personality"), and this admittedly stylish book ends up feeling like a $30 flip through a glossy shelter rag. --Timothy Murphy
Book Description
When it comes to decorating, are you a Maverick? Or, are you more the Sensual type? Wild or Urban, Pure or Easy? By exploring your natural preferences for light, color, shape, and pattern, exercises help you determine under which of these six categories you fall, and start you on your way to creating exquisite interiors that express exactly who you are. Once you have identified your personal style, you can divine design inspiration from page upon page of lavish, full-color photographs of interiors and furnishings, presented room-by-room and category by category. Alongside these, detail shots concentrate on mood, texture, light and light, and more, providing ideas for finishing touches and display. Whether you want to achieve an entire look from scratch or just tighten up your current decorating style, this volume gives you the tools and the confidence to create an environment you feel at home in.

A must-buy for home design!.......2006-08-01
This is the best home design book I've come across because it covers such a wide range of styles. It helps you understand the kind of home you would ideally live in and how not to be constrained by one period or another. I make everyone go through the survey part and we always have such interesting discussions about it!
Express yourself.......2001-10-12
If most interiors books/magazines leave you feeling like someone else is trying to impose their taste on you, this is the book for you. It helps you identify your own personal style (easier said than done I find, especially as most people only get to decorate an apartment once every few years - you have to live with your mistakes). If you've just got one or two whimsical foibles, and a few strong likes or dislikes, it helps you locate these in one of six categories - e.g. pure. maverick, urban. Most of the time - and you can try the exercises on your friends - it gets it exactly right, and, more excitingly, makes you realise things about your taste you never would have guessed otherwise. In short, a lot of fun - and a much cheaper investment than buying something only to discover it doesn't go with any of your other stuff.

Book Description
Thomas E. Wagner and Phillip J. Obermiller's African American Miners and Migrants documents the lives of Eastern Kentucky Social Club (EKSC) members, a group of black Appalachians who left the eastern Kentucky coalfields and their coal company hometowns in Harlan County.
Bound together by segregation, the inherent dangers of mining, and coal company paternalism, it might seem that black miners and mountaineers would be eager to forget their past. Instead, members of the EKSC have chosen to celebrate their Harlan County roots. African American Miners and Migrants uses historical and archival research and extensive personal interviews to explore their reasons and the ties that still bind them to eastern Kentucky. The book also examines life in the model coal towns of Benham and Lynch in the context of Progressive Era policies, the practice of welfare capitalism, and the contemporary national trend of building corporate towns and planned communities.
