Book Description

The Egypt that so enticed and enchanted intrepid archaeologist-sleuth Amelia Peabody in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries was a place of wonder, mystery, danger, and the lure of antiquity. Now, with this monumental volume of Egyptian culture, history, and arcania, readers will be able to immerse themselves in the great lady's world more completely than ever before.

Journey through the bustling streets and markets of Cairo a hundred years ago. Surround yourself with the customs and color of a bygone time. Explore ancient tombs and temples and marvel at the history of this remarkable land -- from the age of the pharaohs through the Napoleonic era to the First World War. Also included in Amelia Peabody's Egypt are a hitherto unpublished journal entry and intimate biographies of the Emersons and their friends, which provide a uniquely personal view of the lives, relationships, opinions, politics, and delightful eccentricities of mystery's first family, as well as unforgettable pearls of wit and wisdom from everyone's favorite fictional Egyptologist herself.

Containing nearly 600 black-and-white photographs and illustrations, and articles by numerous experts, Amelia Peabody's Egypt sparkles with unforgettable glimpses of the exotic and the bizarre, the unusual and the unfamiliar -- a treasure trove that overflows with Egyptological riches, along with wonderful insights into the culture and mores of the Victorian era, including the prevalent attitudes on empire, fashion, feminism, tourists, servants, and much more.

A one-of-a-kind collection that offers endless hours of pleasure for Peabodyphiles and Egypt aficionados alike, here is a tome to cherish; a grand and glorious celebration of the life, the work, and the world of the incomparable Amelia Peabody.

5 out of 5 stars Fact and fiction, for Peabody fans.......2007-09-17

This is a wonderful book for the fans of Amelia Peadbody Emerson, or any of the other characters in thed Peabody series. The are short biogs of the most frequently listed real people, and a 'who's who' of the books; many photos of the period and places and people; articles on many aspects of Egyptology relating mainly to the books; plus quite a large number of related subjects.

If one is reading the series, but has not read them all up to the publishing date of this (2003), it may be advisable to be a little careful in one or two places, as there are a (very) few details that give away part of the plots - so I was pleased I had read all of them before I read this.

If the plots don't worry you, this won't be a problem.

A very well presented, enormously educational book, which is more than able to be read for fun. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Worth buying for Peabody fans.......2007-05-24

I bought this because I am a recent convert to the Amelia Peabody books. I really enjoyed it and if you ar ea Peabody fan, it is worth buying. It helps to put people and places in contexts and offers an insight into Egypt at the time of the books.

My one small criticism is that I thought it could have had brief synopsis' of the books but that is probably just me, I liked it!

I ordered this book for a Christmas gift and it wasn't ever delivered.
My sister likes Elizabeth Peters. I assume it is an odd work as it seemed to be out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory handbook for "Amelia Peabody Emerson fans".......2007-03-09

If you've read even a few of Elizabeth Peters's series of funny and Eyptology/history-filled mysteries, you will wonder how you ever got along without this book. Then again, if you've only read a few of the series, how can you stop without reading them all? In any case, this book helps you tie together some of the random information you have learned--and even contains some fictitious insight on the Emersons as well.

5 out of 5 stars facts and fun combined!.......2007-03-09

Facts about Egypt, the culture and the time period, alongs with hundreds of fun "facts" about our beloved characters in the Amelia Peabody series. If you like the Peabody series, you'll LOVE this book!

5 out of 5 stars There be gods here!.......2003-09-05

Mark Shepherd offers what appears to be the conclusion of his urban-fantasy trilogy (read "Elvendude" and "Spiritride" first) and ties up his loose ends with a bang--or several. Set in Mercedes Lackey's SERRAted Edge Universe, the book has, as usual, several subplots skilfully woven together and even a wild left turn or two. In Tulsa, OK, FBI agent Samantha McDaris--who is actually an elf in disguise, and the sister of Avalon's King Aedhan--is investigating the disappearances of over 200 young players from a nationwide chain of indoor wargaming arenas called Lazerwarz, of which a new facility is slated to open momentarily. When she arrives, she discovers that part of Stonehenge--yes, *that* Stonehenge--has inexplicably (to most people--Sammi immediately realizes that a magical Gate has been used, but whose and why?) has appeared in the facility's parking lot. Meanwhile, a teenage fast-food worker named Dobie discovers in the arena a warrior personality he'd never suspected--and gets picked up and seduced by what turns out to be The Morrigan, an ancient Irish goddess. But she's not the only Celtic survivor from The Upperworld still hanging on, as Lugh, the god of light, contacts Sammi and her brother with the news that his demimortal son, Cuchulain, has been reincarnated in modern guise and has no idea of his past. A British druid (probably likewise a reincarnation) and our old friend Mort, the demonic hanger-on from the previous books promoted to major villainy and with his true nature revealed, add further complications. Shepherd somehow manages to keep everything straight and maintain momentum right through an updated techie single combat intended to settle, once and for all, the quarrel between Mort and the Seileighe (Light Elf) court. He also originates a splendid laserized version of paintball and describes it so well that you find yourself wondering when it's going to open near you. This is urban fantasy at its best.

4 out of 5 stars Great ! - More urban elves in the Mercedes Lackey Universe.......1999-09-14

Urban Elf magic fantasy. Laser tag meets magic and Dream Park. Some evil characters who weren't eliminated in Spirit Ride (also recommended) turn up as the elves of Avalon look for allies against the Unseleighe.

2 out of 5 stars The Most Superfluous Book in the Series.......2001-12-09

The Starfarers series is not without its merits, but Metaphase is where it grinds to a virtual standstill. Although one or two minor ideas pop up here and there, most of the book is spent on rather dull character interaction.

The plot is not really going anywhere at all in this installation, and could easily have been boiled down to one or two chapters in the next book.

You're left with the distinct impression that the author was paid by the page.

      4 out of 5 stars They're on their way..........2001-10-21

The starfarers get the chance for great character development in this volume of the series. Good reading, and essential to the storyline!

3 out of 5 stars starfarers stuck in the middle.......2000-01-08

Vonda McIntyre's background as a geneticist gives us the explanation of the title of this book, being the stationary, poised to move, section of the trilogy. On its own it doesn't have the impact of her other books, but it's the essential link for this series, with distinctly psychedelic overtones!

        Description:
In vivo studies on X-irradiated mice have shown that structural chromosome aberrations can be induced in female germ cells and that the radiation-induced chromosomal damage strongly depends on the stage of maturation reached by the oocytes at the time of irradiation. In the present study, the sensitivity of oocytes to induction of chromosome damage by radiation was evaluated at two different stages, by use of a recently developed method of in vitro culture covering a crucial period of follicle/oocyte growth and maturation. A key feature of this system is that growth and development of all follicles is perfectly synchronized, due to the selection of a narrow class of follicles in the start-off culture. This allows irradiation of well-characterized and homogenous populations of follicles, in contrast to the situation prevailing in vivo. Follicles were X-irradiated with either 2 or 4Gy, on day 0 of culture (early preantral follicles with one to two cell layers) or on day 12, 3h after hormonal stimulation of ovulation (antral Graafian follicles). Ovulated oocytes, blocked in metaphase I (MI) by colchicine, were fixed 16h after hormonal stimulation and analyzed for chromosome aberrations. The results confirm the high radiosensitivity of oocytes at 2 weeks prior to ovulation and the even higher radiosensitivity of those irradiated a few hours before ovulation, underlining the suitability of the in vitro system for further studies on the genetic effects of ionising radiation in female mammals.

            Abstract:
Background: Duplicated chromosomes are equally segregated to daughter cells by a bipolar mitotic spindle during cell division. By metaphase, sister chromatids are coupled to microtubule (MT) plus ends from opposite poles of the bipolar spindle via kinetochores. Here we describe a phosphorylation event that promotes the coupling of kinetochores to microtubule plus ends. Results: Dam1 is a kinetochore component that directly binds to microtubules. We identified DAM1-765, a dominant allele of DAM1, in a genetic screen for mutations that increase stress on the spindle pole body (SPB) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. DAM1-765 contains the single mutation S221F. We show that S221 is one of six Dam1 serines (S13, S49, S217, S218, S221, and S232) phosphorylated by Mps1 in vitro. In cells with single mutations S221F, S218A, or S221A, kinetochores in the metaphase spindle form tight clusters that are closer to the SPBs than in a wild-type cell. Five lines of experimental evidence, including localization of spindle components by fluorescence microscopy, measurement of microtubule dynamics by fluorescence redistribution after photobleaching, and reconstructions of three-dimensional structure by electron tomography, combined with computational modeling of microtubule behavior strongly indicate that, unlike wild-type kinetochores, Dam1-765 kinetochores do not colocalize with an equal number of plus ends. Despite the uncoupling of the kinetochores from the plus ends of MTs, the DAM1-765 cells are viable, complete the cell cycle with the same kinetics as wild-type cells, and biorient their chromosomes as efficiently as wild-type cells. Conclusions: We conclude that phosphorylation of Dam1 residues S218 and S221 by Mps1 is required for efficient coupling of kinetochores to MT plus ends. We find that efficient plus-end coupling is not required for (1) maintenance of chromosome biorientation, (2) maintenance of tension between sister kinetochores, or (3) chromosome segregation.

Jeanne Lemlin is one of my favorite cookbook authors. Her recipes ALWAYS succeed. They are well-written and friendly and contain a nice diversity of dishes. If she says a recipe is "simple" or "quick" to prepare it will be. The dishes ALWAYS taste good. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will enjoy any of her books. Quick Vegetarian Pleasures is full of winners!

4 out of 5 stars Delicious recipes, but not very healthy.......2007-01-18

I've used a number of recipes from this cookbook and have been mostly pleased. There are some nice deviations from the typical ingredients, including a few vegetables and grains I hadn't used before. The green bean and red pepper dish has become a staple in my home, and some of the other recipes inspired me to try different casserole dishes. Overall, I think it's a nice addition to my little cookbook collection.

However, most of the recipes in this book are very high in calories and fat. The author uses a LOT of butter and cheese--practically every recipe calls for a tablespoon or more of butter and mounds of cheese. Yes, you can cut back on these high fat additions and substitute oil in some places, but overall I would not call these recipes particularly healthy. I use most of the recipes only occasionally because of this.

                4 out of 5 stars Veggie Pleasures.......2007-01-10

The recipes are luscious and I'm going to try to incorporate them into our not-so-vegetarian lives.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite cookbooks.......2006-10-09

This is one of our favorite cookbooks (our others from Moosewood, Jane Brody, and Tara Duggan). I think every recipe we've tried so far has been a winner. One of our staples is the lasagna recipe, which lets you skip the boiling the noodles step. Easy, fast, delicious.

                5 out of 5 stars a lot a great recipes.......2006-08-27

This is a great book for someone who is not necessarily a strict vegetarian, but would like to try eating more vegetables.

I never received this book. Sent an email to seller never received an answer. Bad, bad!!!! Very disappointed. Yes, it is paid for!

5 out of 5 stars Great beginners book........2005-11-15

Clear, easy-to-read, easy-to-follow information about turtles and tortises. I purchased this book after becoming a guardian to an Arizona desert tortise. These creatures are protected and found in small areas of Nevada, California and Arizona, and there is not much information about them to be found. This book had more useful information than I received from any other source.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2004-06-17

Given that this book is obviously aimed at the beginner it would make sense for the book to offer decent info for commonly available species; mud and musk turtles, painted turtles, cooters, sliders, maybe Russian and Greek tortises, salcuttas, and some others. However, it doesn't.

The book focuses an insane amount on the large, expensive (often over 1,000US), rare-in-captivity tortises like the Galapagos and aldabra tortise, which are exactly what the novice keeper wont' likely be buying. The common, affordable, and easier to keep turtles and tortises are given short shrift in this book. They may get a line or two, but that's about it.
Furthermore, what information is given seems suspect; reccomended cage sizes tend to be on the small side, temps can be off, as can humidity. It's really not worth having--I threw my copy away.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2004-03-17

I purchased this book thinking (hoping) it would be the excellent source of information it is advertised to be; it is not.

I am very experienced in keeping all kinds of companion animals. As a rule, when I think I might want to add a new species to my household, I research the critter in question with great care. I purchased this book prior to getting my first tortoise. At the same time, I began researching my chosen species on the internet. Based upon what I have learned on the net and in speaking with tortoise keepers & breeders via e-mail/telephone and in person at "reptile expos", the information in this book is at best dated and over simplified and at worst may be dangerous to your pet.

The kindest thing I can say about this book is that it is poorly organized. This alone makes it difficult to formulate an understanding of tortoise culture. Further, the author often contradicts herself, causing the reader to question whether they are misunderstanding the text as they go.

Turtles and torts are highly specialized - they do not adapt to us as dogs or cats do. We MUST adapt to them and fulfill their very specific needs completely. Please research your chosen species very carefully before you purchase a turtle or tort!

If you simply must buy this book, please do not use it as your only or best source of info.

2 out of 5 stars Great for box and tortoise lovers.......2004-01-12

The author was very knowledgeable about her favorites: box turtles and (large) tortoises. That's all well and good, but... None of these turtles are suited for indoor keeping! I would expect that most prospective or current turtle keepers want or have smaller turtles, and it would have been nice to get more detailed info about them. If you can keep your chenolians in an outdoor habitat, BUY THIS BOOK. Otherwise, find another.

                      Book Description

Paden City Glass Manufacturing Company of Paden City, West Virginia, manufactured popular etched tableware in over 20 different colors between 1916 and 1951. More than 1,500 color photographs highlight the many patterns produced by the company. The book contains 50 different etchings done by Paden City, as well as patterns and specialty items. Each etching and pattern is accompanied by a current collector value, making this the first value guide ever to be published by Collector Books on Paden City glass. The authors' ground-breaking research features factory drawings, pages from an Edward Paul catalog of the World War II years containing cologne sets previously not identified as Paden City, new information about etchings and colors, and rarities. AUTHORBIO: Carrie began collecting glass around 1971, when a friend showed her a collection of covered animal dishes. She and her husband, Jerry, began selling glassware on a part-time basis in 1984 and became full-time dealers five years later. They specialize in Fenton glass and Paden City glassware. AUTHORBIO: Jerry and his wife, Carrie, began selling glassware on a part-time basis in 1984 and became full-time dealers five years later. They specialize in Fenton glass and Paden City glassware. REVIEW: This book is one of the first to focus on glassware made by Paden City Glass. It includes hundreds of color photographs, listings, and values. Original company catalog pages and drawings are nice features of the book.

                                  Book Description

How did the rise of metropolitan art institutions influence modernism and the modernization of art in England? This volume explores the artist as creator, notions of class and taste, and the power of institutions to affect creativity and artistic expression. Topics discussed include the radicalism of engravers and how their claim to be artists is an important and neglected aspect of the nineteenth-century art world; and how the aesthetic dispute over the Chantrey Bequest epitomized conflicts of taste, cultural independence between opposed art institutions and the Treasury.

Angelo did a good job of telling the story of an imigrant family doing well after hard work and struggle. This is a great story for children of today that do not understant the concept of hardwork to succeed in education OR industry of their choice. An easy to read lesson for families.

I enjoyed reading this book...I learned a lot about the early history of San Diego, but I don't think this is the whole story of the Alessios in Califonria. What about the later years? The arrests, etc. Didn't one of the brothers do time for racketeering or something like that? Anyway, it is still interesting--and I guess we all get to decide what we want to tell in writing our own life story.
