This series (and author) is one of my favorites. While I didn't care for the series finales' ending (in Jinian Star-Eye), all books in the Land of the True Game are well worth the read. And unlike so many books today, they are a manageable size. The three Mavin books are great, possibly the best in this unique and special series.

It takes a special kind of author to manage the writing of a nine volume series. And an even rarer author who can write a long series that will stand up to intensive reading. Sheri Tepper is once such author that has the knack. When the volumes of the Lands of the True Game first came out Tepper was a little known writer, breaking into the world of science fiction and fantasy. By the writing of this volume, the last in the series, Tepper was an established writer with a loyal audience.

It is hard to point to any one volume, character or idea and say that this is what made the work so successful. And perhaps that is part of Tepper's secret, her ability to shift point of view and narrator, introduce new and spectacular characters, and add layer upon layer to a complex world. Through her three protagonists, Peter, Jinian and Mavin we explore a world where both magic, science, ecology and witchcraft happily blend together without a single hitch.

This is Mavin's last tale, finally come to fulfill her promise to Himaggery and meet him after 20 years in the city of Pfarb Durim. Quite a lot has gone into get there again, and Mavin is stunned to find that Himaggery is not to be found. That eight years earlier the wizard set out and a quest and was eaten up by it. Windlow the Seer knows that his friend is not dead, but all efforts to find him have failed. Now Himaggery's quest must become Mavin's quest as she slowly retraces his steps to uncover betrayal and mystery in a story full of old friends and new enemies.

This is Mavin's greatest test. Not because it takes great courage or incredible wits to survive, but because Mavin find's herself facing her real issues as a woman and a shifter. Finding Himaggery and returning the wizard to himself turn out to be to separate and difficult thinks. Maven's need for freedom and independent conflict with her commitment, and she begins to find that responsibility is a lump thing about which one must always make difficult choices. Finding that she has managed to conceive Himaggery's child introduces another layer of complication, and forces her to discover that Mavin need not shift to be Mavin.

But who Mavin really is and how she will save both Himaggery and herself is the crux of the book. Even more so than it is a tricksy tale of harpies and shadows. Mavin's trilogy does much to open of the Tepper's world to the reader and lay the groundwork for the other stories in the series. It is a world that will remain on my shelves forever, waiting for the next time I need to follow the Eesties road.

Enjoyable.......2000-01-30

This is the third in The Chronicles of Mavin Manyshaped. Himaggery is missing, and Mavin seeks him. Another enjoyable addition to the series, but again with a more linear story than the True Game trilogy of Peter. This story also provides the background on which the trilogy of Jinian will build.

Lovecraft for people who don't like Lovecraft.......2002-11-09

Colin Wilson wrote this book because although he liked the basic ideas behind the "Lovecraftian" genre, he did not like the writing style of H.P. Lovecraft. His goal was to develop a well-written novel using the rules of the genre, such as making everything as real as possible in regards to references, events and places.

This book also deals extensively with the concepts that are more at home in a Frank Herbert novel, such as the limits of what it means to be human and what human beings are capable of. This book is part mystery, part science-fiction, part primer to Wilson's occult philosophy.

A great Lovecraftian suspense!.......1999-07-23

This is one of the best Lovecraft-style stories I have read. The suspense in this book is great. You never know what will be uncovered in the next page. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good suspense story.

this is a companion to Wilson's "Mind Parasites".......1997-12-20

Colin Wilson continues his exploration of "Intentionality" as a key element in his existential philosophy. If you liked The Mind Parasites, then you owe it to yourself to read this book (as well as The Space Vampires). His use of fiction as a vehicle to philosophical discourse is worth the effort to find these books.

For true lemon lovers.......2007-04-10

"Luscious Lemon Desserts" is the must-have cookbook for the true lemon aficionado. Lori Longbotham showcases the clear, piercing flavor of lemon in all of its magnificence, whether you long for the creaminess of rice pudding, the luxuriousness of lemon mousse, or the palate-cleansing clarity of gelatin.

The flavor of lemon can be delivered through several distinct mediums, all of which have different uses and tones: zest, juice, and oil. Most home cooks have used the first two, but the third is an unusual addition. Ms. Longbotham recommends not using lemon extract, comparing the results to furniture polish, and I must agree with her comparison--the warmer, subtler flavor of lemon oil makes a significant difference.

Ms. Longbotham's recipes include standard desserts with a lemon flair, such as pudding, mousse, gelatin, rice pudding, angel food cake, pudding cake, pound cake, lemon meringue pie, lemon tart, three different cheesecakes, souffle, lemon curd, and more. They also, however, include some more unusual takes on dessert. For instance, while I adore pots de creme, I haven't quite been able to get myself to try the version in here that includes coriander seeds, and the same with the creme caramel that includes fennel. Of course you can leave these little additives out easily enough, so I don't think they should put you off of buying the cookbook if they don't sound good to you.

We've made a number of recipes out of this cookbook since we first purchased it. The "ultimate lemon mousse" is still my favorite, and yes, it truly deserves its name! We've made it repeatedly, and it's been a big hit at multiple dinners we've thrown. The lemon rice pudding is mild and not-too-sweet, almost something of a palate-cleanser; it's unexpected and delicious. The lemon curd goes beautifully over biscuits. The only recipe we had any trouble with was "my favorite lemon pudding;" it broke and didn't thicken properly, but I suspect that may well have been due to problems with our old refrigerator rather than the recipe.

For those who find cooking to be a delight and love the flavor of a good lemon, I can't imagine a cookbook library without "Luscious Lemon Desserts!"

Mmmmm! Triple Lemon-Cheesecake..........2007-04-05

I think the Triple Lemon Cheesecake and Lemon curd are worth the price of the book. I'm a fan of cheesecake but only make one at a time, and very occasionally. As often as not, my family requests the Triple Lemon Cheesecake over any other cheesecake I make. And the Lemon Curd (which goes on the cheesecake, among other things), Yowza! Fantastic!

I don't cook or bake much, so I don't tend to try out new recipes often, but have been very happy with what I've tried in this book. It's also lovely to look at and enjoyable and friendly to read. Two thumbs up.

For anyone who likes lemon desserts-which is just about everybody! It's pretty surprising that no one had written a lemon dessert book before Lori Longbotham, but fortunately for any home baker that it's one of her favorite flavors. This book is filled with delicious, easy desserts-try the homey Ultimate Lemon Pound Cake, the Chocolate Ganache Tart with Lots of Lemon (wow!), or the delectable Crisp Lemon Wafers-and then move on to the dozens of other delectable recipes. When summer comes, there are lots of great frozen desserts too. The recipes are clear and easy to follow, and she includes lots of tips. And the color photographs are gorgeous!

Recipes completely unreliable.......2005-06-03

I'm a huge lemon dessert fan so when I saw this book, I didn't hesistate to buy it, even at retail price. Then I hurried home and got to work on the recipes. I do quite a bit of baking and I love to meticulously follow directions, but almost everything I made from this, with the exception of the lemon curd, turned out almost inedible. This book offered the worst recipe for madeleines I have ever had the misfortune to encounter, the cheescake with dense and disgusting, etc. I was very disapointed in this purchase, and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It seemed as though the author had never tested these recipes herself. Completely unreliable.

This book is very useful especialy if you know somone who loves lemon desserts (for me it would be my mother).
There are great glossy photos throughout the book which is nice.
Good Recipes.
I'm satisfied with my purchase.

Not a very good book for a beginner. Very poor on horse breeds or lack there of, didn't explain the types of horses or their temperment.

This book does have some good information for true beginners, but if you know even a teeny tiny bit about horses, you probably are too advanced for this book. The book also has an odd habit of introducing more advanced topics all of a sudden, with no explanation about them. If you want to learn more about any of these important topics, the author reccommends you ask someone who knows more than you do, or read another book! She does this frequently throughout the book, and I feel that some of these topics are truly the most important things to know about horsekeeping! Some of the info is dated, and it is poorly organized, and she presents many controversial topics, but neglects to say that there are more than one school of thought about it and just gives you one opinion as gospel. I was quite dissapointed with the book overall.

I've always loved horses and have wanted to own one. I'm getting serios about purchasing and this book was a great start. It brings up things to think about what you will expect, as far as cost and experiences when looking to buy a horse. If you want more detailed information and are a horse owning beginner, I would also recommend Horses for Dummies, has a lot more detailed information on more topics as well.

I have always been drawn to horses. Since I was a kid, I always thought them to be storng, beautiful creatures. As excited as I was to have my first horse, I was also very nervous that I would not know all that went into it. There's a lot more you need to do than I ever realized! This book really helped me get over my first time jitters and let me know what I needed to do, and I could just enjoy the riding. Great book for anyone who has ever dreamed of having a horse.

Great for novice.......2002-12-23

My family had ponies when I was a child, but at that time I only learned that I loved riding and nothing more. Now, I have friends who will help me find a suitable horse, but as a supplement, this book has been very informative and I feel a lot better about the search. It's probably not a good book for someone with very much horse experience, since it would be too elementary. But, for someone like me who has a little riding experience but no real horse-keeping experience, it's a great book.

This is the perfect little book to get for valentines day. It is beautifully designed and illustrated and the topic is fascinating. You can tell that Roberta Etter really did her research for this book and many of the love tokens photographed in the book are from her own collection. For many of us, the Civil Rights era happened when we were too young to understand. This is a good overview of the man and his times. Many people who were just names before, became people to me.

Although, I believe King made some serious mistakes, I understand for the first time why he should have a national holiday. I had no idea he was such an impressive person. Keep in mind, this book was written by a serious historian; not just someone who wished to canonize King.

A blueprint for change.......2005-02-05

As a student activist during my college years, I was introduced to this book by one of many mentors. They said that this was a detailed account of how Dr. King and his soldiers pushed forward their agenda for change in America. It was more than that. It was a powerful testament of the conviction of Dr. King and the gameplan for dealing with racist America. He did not work alone but his analysis of each situation proved to be very timely and accurate. Later on, of course, his effectiveness lost a little of its punch but you can not change the success that came from his branch of the Movement. Stephen Oates so elequently noted the techniques and strategies used during the turbulant sixties. It gave me information on how to handle the media, the powers that be, other members of my allies and prepare for possible backstabbers. That was my reason for reading the book. However, I got SSSOOO much more.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a revolutionary. His faith in God was the driving force behind in nonviolent stance. His studies of Gandhi and Martin Luther further solidified his position. Destined for greatness from the time of his birth, MLK was always preparing himself (and being prepared) for that big moment. He was intelligent, charismatic and thorough in approach to segregation. A family man, a minister, a scholar and an activist. This book is a good starting point for not just learning about King but understanding him. He IS (not was) bigger than "I Have A Dream", bigger than boycotts, bigger than nonviolence. Thanks to Oates and this masterpiece, he can be celebrated for what he was, an instrument of change and the Prince of Peace.

Masterful balanced biography.......2004-05-17

Stephen Oates writes a masterful biography of one of the pivotal figures of the twentieth century. Today we view Martin Luther King Jr. as a saint, and a model of what the human spirit can achieve. In his day, he was viewed by many in the South with fear, hatred and loathing.

It is easy to view this situation in hindsight, and assume that everyone was just ignorant. Oates writes of the complex history, the battles within and outside "the movement" and how divided the nation was at the time. Oates also does not shirk away from many of Martin Luther King's personal weaknesses. In this sense, he humanizes the great leader, instead of canonizes him.

In the end, I am left with three conclusions:
1 - Martin Luther King Jr. indeed found a way to overcome hatred with love, and in doing so helped America avoid a race war.
2 - The message of civil rights was both religeous and personal. Despite today's views of the right being the party of religeon, in his day the southern liberal movement was galvanized in the church.
3 - Despite this, he was a flawed individual. His human weakness does not diminish his accomplishment.

The book is not light reading. Read it. Let it soak in. And comprehend.

The Life of Martin Luther King Jr........2002-05-07

This book was about a big part of our United States History. It was about Civil Rights. Martin Luther King Jr. was a big Civil Rights activist in the 1960's. I learned quite a bit about Martin Luther Kings's life that I did not know before I had read this book.
Martin Luther King was one of the most important people of our country's history. He fought for African-Americans Civil Rights. He was a very determined man, who was alwyas put into jail numerous times for his "peaceful protests". He had given several speeches as well. The author of this book is Stephen B. Oates. He is a good writer, who has written 16 books.He has also won many literary prizes such as the Christopher Award. This book is very well written. He clearly tells the story as if he had experienced it. His strenghts include: Getting actual quotes from the people that were important in this time, having pictures of Mr. King and others, and having footnotes that explained the story more in depth. I can not think of many weaknesses that he has. However, the book was long but I did not expect it to be short due to the importance of the topic. I would reccomend this book to many people. The reason why is because it tells you in depth stories about Martin Luther King Jr. and his life, but it does have profanity and innappropriate content for young children. All in all, this was a very good biography and taught me many things.

Important book about a hero.......2001-11-07

This is the best biography I've read, not only about King but overall. Oates does a fine job balancing between illuminating details that help make King accessible to the reader without getting bogged down in this detail. Likewise, this balance provides a fine introduction to the Civil rights movement. (I don't consider a weakness of Let the Trumpets Sound that Oates doesn't dwell on certain of Kings weaknesses, as he instead focuses on King's message and actions; again, I think Oates concentrates on the myriad aspects of King's life, and the movement, that truly were important.)

Anybody trying to learn more about the Civil rights Movement should read this (along with such books the Autobiograpohy of Malcolm X and any of a number of books about Gandhi).
