Book Description
Tempe's work at the Jeffersonian Institute is put on hold when Special Agent Seeley Booth, stalled on a case deposing a Chicago mob family, calls her in to assist with a bizarre discovery: a plastic bag of skeletal remains -- and a chilling note -- left on the steps of a federal building. Tempe determines the bones are from different corpses, suggesting a serial killer's handiwork. A suspect is quickly taken into custody, but Tempe senses the case is far from closed. And as Booth's Mafia case heats up with violent twists and bloody discoveries, including ties to one of Chicago's most gruesome and notorious killers, Tempe must unravel the story of the bones, where the truth lies buried -- in order to stay alive.

Read it in one sitting.......2007-08-03
The book had a fast-paced interesting storyline. Mr Collins also managed to capture the characters and their "ways" of interacting as portrayed on TV. As a fan of the show, I enjoyed the read. Well worth the price I paid for it!
Quick to ship.......2007-06-10
Not as good as Reichs. Storyline is like the show so I was a little confused as I didn't realize all the changes from original character.

Death Du Jour
Kathy Reichs
Manufacturer: Doubleday Direct
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: B000L9VEHS |
Product Description
Readers of Kathy Reichs's cool and clever first forensic thriller Déjà Dead will recognize the ironic voice of Tempe (short for Temperance) Brennan, the North Carolina-born scientist who winds up working at the Laboratoire de Médicine Légale in Montreal. Here she bristles at the conservative attitudes of some of her Canadian colleagues. Despite the cold weather, Tempe's workload quickly becomes heavy: the bones of a long-dead nun now up for sainthood have been moved and tampered with; a deadly house fire turns out to be arson; and a university teaching assistant disappears after joining a cult. Tempe must figure out where (and why) all the bodies are buried in the hard Canadian ground. Her investigations take her home to North Carolina, and to a strange colony living on an offshore island. Unlike certain other writers who specialize in forensic pathology, Reichs doesn't revel in the horror of death or rub our noses in gore: she uses the science of death to reveal rather than to shock or startle. It definitely makes for easier reading--especially at mealtimes.

Between Two Pages.......2003-11-20
This is the only book out there that deals with children who have died from substance abuse. Most grief books have a sentence or two but because this type of death is considered one of the disenfranchised griefs - deaths from a reason not acceptable to society - it is not touched upon. This book shows that these people did not set out to be addicts and due to various reasons, started to use substances, never realizing the hold drugs take.
These young people were someone's sons and daughters/they were loved/and are missed. This book tells some of their stories.
Book Description
Book 3 in The Asgard Trilogy
Acclaimed science fiction author Brian Stableford (Year Zero, Designer Genes) returns with Asgard's Heart, the final book in his trilogy about a planet that contains thousands of worlds inside it - and the one man who will do anything to penetrate its secrets. The conflict between the Isthomi and Scarid races and the surface dwellers of Asgard had come to a halt - but not to an end. Forces are at work on all sides to attempt to gain the upper hand in the struggle to control Asgard, for control of Asgard's heart could mean total power over the planet itself, and all who live in it. At the middle of this multi-sided struggle is Michael Rousseau, who must penetrate the very core of the planet itself - both in reality and in another dimension altogether - to save Asgard and all who dwell in it, before it's too late.
Brian Stableford lives in Reading with his wife Jane, a holistic therapist.
Customer Reviews:
Reminiscent of Larry Niven's Ringworld Series.......2006-09-22
Asgard is a multi-level Dyson sphere in which the main character, Mike Rousseau, finds himself inexorably drawn towards the center of the artifact as well as the center of an eons long battle between software entities. Mike remains a wise-cracking, Voltaire-quoting reluctant hero throughout, saving the day only when no one else remains to do it. Unlike Larry Niven's Ringworld series, the Asgard trilogy does not discuss the technological aspects of the artifact much.
The first in the series, Asgard's Secret, is impossible to put down, after a somewhat slow start, with lots of action and well-defined characters. There are brief and interesting philosophical discussions on topics like the anthropic principle and convergent evolution. There is also an amusing discussion of the chicken and egg conundrum. None of these philosophical discussions takes much time away from the action. As I neared the end, I was glad I had bought all 3 in advance since I wanted to keep reading Mike's adventures.
The second novel, Asgard's Conquerors was not quite as good. Why is it that trilogy writers often seem to run out of steam? The novel didn't really bring the fascist regime of the conquerors to life. They seemed very one-dimensional, unlike the main characters, all of whom carry over from the first book. Book 2 still has enough action to keep you reading past your bedtime.
The third, Asgard's Heart, unfortunately became repetitive instead of creative, without adding significantly to any of the earlier philosophical discussions. Further, a major portion of the novel swapped back and forth between chapters of good hard science fiction action and chapters with very fantastic battles in virtual reality. Much too much like the fantasy genre for my taste.
I'm rating them 5, 4, and 3 stars, respectively.

Customer Reviews:
Smokin' at Home.......2007-05-09
This book is for those who want REAL bbq - chicken, pork, beef, whatever - not just something grilled. Presents ideas for everyday grillers to use to create good bbq in their own yard without spending big dollars on special equipment. If you like to cook and grill, this book's for you.
Great recipies.......2007-01-09
Hubby got this book and he has already started to cook some stuff out of it! He read the entire thing from cover to cover in one night! Great book!
Real smoked ribs aren't boiled first.......2005-08-24
Have to agree with some of the other reviewers. This isn't the book to get if you're new to smoking foods. Much better books are out there. The recipies were fine until I got to the part about how to prepare ribs. None of the other books I have on smoking would even dare bring up boiling your ribs before placing them on the grill. Yet, recipe after rib recipe calls for boiling your ribs and then throwing them on the grill. It's true that boiling will render the fat and make the meat tender but it'll also make it bland. Why am I harping on this? Because the real test for quality smoked foods includes ribs (brisket and pork shoulder are the other tests).
Its ?????.......2005-06-11
I found this book to only be okay and boring it needs zaz not blaa..That is what it is blaa. I would pass it on or give it to a in-law then to keep it.It has good reciepes but no more then the other ones and it is a basic book. I think ,if this is to have a bang it needs more then what it has..
Good but not great.......2004-11-17
As another reviewer said, this book should not be the first book an a BBQers library. Although it has numerous recipes (including smoked vegetables and 17 different mops & sauces), it lacks the basics. There are no basic "recipes" for whole turkey, salmon or baby back ribs. There isn't even a temperature chart. The author discusses the difference between grilling and BBQing, and different types of smokers. There is a good discussion of wood types, but I wish I had read the other reviews before buying it.

Sure, you probably already know that Labrador retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds. But did you know that they're also one of the most useful? In 101 Uses for a Lab, photographer Dale Spartas--whose previous book, Just Labs, won the hearts of many Lab lovers--offers a "whimsical look at the many roles the Lab in your life can fill." From taste tester to alarm clock, dishwasher to hand warmer, Spartas's 101 fun-filled color photographs "bring to life all the heartwarming, endearing characteristics that make these dogs favorite companions."
Customer Reviews:
Brings a smile to your face.......2006-09-12
I saw this small book at someone elses house. Being a new Lab owner, seeing the personality of the breed in this small book, I had to buy. Expensive..YES..... but I guess put the value on a smile! It sits on my coffee table for visitiors to enjoy.
Save your money!!.......2001-06-25
I returned this book as soon as I received it. I thought it was overpriced for its small size. I'd also expected the pictures to be irresistable; they turned out to be very mundane and cliche. I've seen better amateur pictures taken by lab owners themselves. Bottom line--I would have given this book 0 stars if it were an option.
Cute pictures in a little book.......2001-06-21
I have several other Lab books for about the same price as this one. This is a little book for the price but the pictures are very cute. I would have rather bought it used, it would be a much better bargin. Enjoy!
... hmmm ... ?.......2001-03-16
Having read the previous reviews, I'd expected to find little text, but had thought the photographs would prove sufficient ... unfortunately the photos are a little disappointing ... more like snap shots taken to fill up pages ...
101 Uses For A Lab.......1999-12-26
We have had labrador retrievers in our family for over 40 years. Splash, our current yellow lab, and our many other labs, is well described in this wonderful book. Splash thinks his (and I am sure other labrador owners will agree) sole role in life is to be our best friend and he gives us so much love every single day. It is clear, after reading this book, that labs are the best breed of dog available. The author truly captures the fine spirit, dedication and devotion of the labrador retriever -- I found the book to be true for all of our wonderful dogs. For those who are fortunate enough to own a lab, this book is a MUST!

Best Origami Nativity anywhere!!!!.......2006-12-13
This book has easy directions and diagrams to make each part of the nativity. I was very happy with the finished product. All the Nativity pieces were easy enough to make and when finished, it was obvious what they were. I made them in large numbers to give out during the Children's Sermon. I did a couple a week and it was well received. Two of the many people who saw the figures purchased the book because they liked them so well!!!

Great Instructions and Decorating Ideas.......2007-09-17
The very best set of "how-to" instructions for origami folds ever put out with a holiday twist. Each illustration is clear, clean, and easy to understand. Each fold is thoroughly illustrated. You come away with a deeper understanding of overall origami design concepts, too. Plus - the color photos are great inspiration for your own decorating ideas. This book will unlock those other origami books that have great designs, but miss the mark on instruction and/or illustration. Own this book. Give this book.
Don't Bother.......2001-12-15
This book had a couple decent ideas for Christmas decorations, but don't be fooled by the "origami" in the title. There were only a few standard origami models that you can find elsewhere just as easily (such as the Crane). Most of the rest of the models in the book were cut and paste types with a couple of folds. Over all, I was very disappointed with this book.
Origami for Christmas.......2001-07-01
Origami for Christmas contains thirty-four origami creations that are presented with illustrations and easy step-by-step instructions. This book contains a nativity scene, Christmas wreaths, Santa Claus and his reindeer, greeting cards, tree decorations, flowers, baskets, and kirigami projects. There are enough projects to keep you busy for the whole year.
good for beginners.......2001-02-28
I was a little disappointed with this book. There weren't any new folds--just diagrams for the classic crane, waterbomb, etc. There are some good ideas for putting the various models together to make wreaths, christmas trees, and dioramas, as well as a nativity scene; but if you have a few basic origami books you won't need any of the folds in this one.
Fun for all ages.......1998-11-07
This book is awesome!!! This book has flowers, nativity scenes, Santa and his reindeer. With clear, easy to follow diagrams, this book makes the grade. This book will challenge beginners and has terrific plans for the more experienced folder.
Book Description
Simple directions and clearly detailed diagrams for making more than 42 projects, from easy to complex. Includes origami candles, stockings, bells, stars, and other traditional tree ornaments; a paper train; a Nativity scene with Mary, the Wise Men, and Baby Jesus, and a winter wonderland with Santa, a sleigh, and reindeer.
Customer Reviews:
John Montroll visits Chrismas.......2007-04-03
John does a great job with his directions of these mostly simple and intermediate origami pieces. He keeps to his great rules, all squares and no need for special papers to archive great results. Some of the figures are not as pleasing as I would like, but he had to sacrifice some detail for simplicity. They are also not difficult to modify into other more detailed objects. For example, I am using the directions to the cradle to make a better train design. But as with any Montroll, the directions are clear and easy to follow.
A Jolly Holiday.......2007-02-12
While this is not one of Mr. Montroll's best efforts, it is a decent book. One that tends to be less complex than some of his earlier books. Most of the book is taken up with models depicting the twelve days of christmas which for me didn't have the John Montroll WOW factor of most of his works. The book has a couple of models that make it worth getting. For me the top two were the eight pointed star, and the candle. Both make good ornaments on my origami christmas trees.
Customer Reviews:
Fun with Kids.......2000-09-06
I bought this book for my 5 year old as she loves arts and crafts. Some of the more three dimensional projects in the book were difficult to do, however. For a child, I would recommend the more basic design books by the same author.

Origami in the Classroom, Book I: Activites for Autumn Thro.......2001-06-20
The first in a series of two books designed for classroom utilization. The book has a series of projects that have been adapted to American events and holidays. The first book includes projects for Columbus Day, Halloween, Christmas, and for variety some party baskets. The book is unique in that it states the appropriate grade level; lower, middle, and upper as well as the required time for completing each project. The written instructions are easy to follow. This book would be appropriate for children seven years and older.
Book Description
Origami Ornaments is based on the design of traditional Japanese Kusudama ceremonial spheres. But the Japanese designs regularly require the use of glue to hold several parts together.Lew Rozelle has designed four basic models - base, joiner, clip, and hinge - which can be folded together, hanging in lovely globe or lantern shapes, thus remaining true to origami purist standards.Folded out of colorful paper, the ornaments can be made small enough to hang on a Christmas tree or large enough to hold aromatic potpourri. As the ornaments rest they will open gently, like flowers, but still not come apart. Also included are instructions for incorporating string for hanging as well as tassels into the design - a lovely finishing touch. There are no limits to the number of unique ornaments you can make from the four basic models.Try using various wrapping paper patterns and colored paper - the possibilities are endless.Origami Ornaments is the perfect book for holiday crafters and origami enthusiasts alike.

Easy Christmas Origami.......2007-01-05
Definitely a must for the kids who are starting off. Good layout and easy diagrams had my class of 7 and 8 year olds engrossed. Not just for the Christmas season, many designs would suit other needs. The kids didn't need much assistance to achieve great results.

Very Inspiring.......2003-05-02
Re: another reviewer's comments regarding the cumbersome conversion and outdated technology - well, I hate math more than anybody, but I still think this book is worth it, and I don't think technology, in regard to copy machines, has changed all that much since 1997 (the publication date of the book). Yes, you can now use scanners and printers to digitally manipulate images, (if that is what the other reviewer meant by technology, I'm not sure) but that's not what this book is about. All you really need to know is that you should use a machine that uses TONER, not any kind of water-based ink. Toner is archival, water-based ink is not, and is prone to fade at a much faster rate, especially in sunlight, of course. It used to be that all copy machines only used toner. While this is no longer the case, there are still plenty of toner-based machines (in black AND color, go to your local copy store) available.
The ideas in it are original and extremely creative. I flipped when I saw this book, and had to have it. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in craft / creative hobbies, and I'm pretty darn picky about what books I choose to buy.
Lots of different projects, some great ideas.......2001-09-26
With this book you will turn the mundane office copier into an instrument of exciting art for your home. It features a variety of projects to suit anyone's taste, including stationery, interiors, fabric, furniture and decorative objects. Though many of them look very sophisticated and time consuming, they are very quick and easy to create.
The book starts out with the basics of photocopying such as making enlarging and reducing, reversing as image, adapting an image to fit a standard format and paper selection. Copyright issues are also discussed. Both black & white and color copies are used in the book and these are available at very reasonable prices from most print shops if you do not have direct access to the right kind of copier.
The projects follow. Most are very simple to make and use easy to find supplies. The instructions are excellent and include step-by-step instructions accompanied by illustrations. A large full-color picture of the finished project is also shown. Some of my favorites include fish wall adornments, a classical fireplace, a timepiece valance, patchwork kitchen curtains, a canceled postage stamp T-shirt and magnets. I love the idea of photocopying your child's artwork and putting on a cupboard.
As a bonus, the book includes several pages of black & white images to use in your artwork including many of the elements used in the projects. This makes a nice house-warming gift and some projects are great for kids too.
Disappointing for general crafts perhaps OK for papermakers........1999-09-02
This title was included in a Carol Duval show recently and sounded like a good purchase for general craft use. It wasn't. First, it's over a decade old and hasn't been updated. So many things have changed since this was written that much of what they say is now irrelevant particularly in the technology area. Second, it's written by an English couple which means those of us in the States have to convert many examples as we go. There are a large number of black and white sample designs at the back of the book which could be useful to some. Also for those involved in papermaking and decorating paper it has some useful information. However, OVERALL it's really outdated and not a smart buy for the general crafter.

Book Description
The Oxford W.E.B. Du Bois Reader encompasses the whole of Du Bois's long and multifaceted writing career, from the 1890s through the early 1960s. The volume selects key essays and longer works that portray the range of Du Bois's thought on such subjects as African American culture, the politics and sociology of American race relations, art and music, black leadership, gender and women's rights, Pan-Africanism and anti-colonialism, and Communism in the U.S. and abroad. Chronologically, the volume stretches from definitive early essays such as "The Conservation of Races" to later works such as "Africa and World Peace" and "Gandhi and the American Negro." Du Bois's most famous book, The Souls of Black Folk (1903), and his landmark work on colonialism, Darkwater (1920), which contains many of his best-known shorter essays, such as "The African Roots of the War," "On Being Black," and "The Burden of Black Women," are both printed in their entirety. Key chapters drawn from full-length studies, including The Philadelphia Negro, The Gift of Black Folk, Black Reconstruction, Dusk of Dawn, The World and Africa, In Battle for Peace, and Du Bois's posthumous autobiography are supplemented by dozens of shorter essays covering topics in literature, education, African politics, urban studies, and American foreign policy. Individual essays and selections from longer works also illustrate Du Bois's skillful biographical studies of historical figures such as Toussaint L'Ouverture, Phillis Wheatley, Abraham Lincoln, and John Brown, as well as contemporaries like Booker T. Washington, Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah, Paul Robeson, and Joseph Stalin. Supplemented by an extensive critical introduction and headnotes to major works and topics, theOxford Reader offers the most extensive compilation of Du Bois's writings now available.
