Book Description

It’s no secret that cats are a mystery writer’s best friend. Just ask the bestselling team of Rita Mae Brown and her furry partner, Sneaky Pie Brown, back on the prowl with another unforgettable whodunit. This time a controversial miracle in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains sparks religious fervor–and a suspicious death. Now the indefatigable felines Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, along with the dogged corgi Tee Tucker, must trust their animal instincts to sniff out the worst of human nature....

With the holidays approaching, Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen and her best friend, Susan Tucker, take a much-needed time-out at the mountain monastery of Mount Carmel. There, under the benevolent gaze of the statue of the Virgin Mary, their worldly worries are soon overshadowed. For in front of their very eyes the statue begins to cry tears of blood.

Legend has it that Mary’s crimson tears are harbingers of crises. And though skeptical, the ever-practical Harry can already see one on the horizon. If leaked, news of the so-called miracle could turn the monastery and the town of Crozet into a circus. What Harry doesn’t foresee is murder.…

When Susan’s great-uncle Thomas, a resident monk, is found frozen to death at the base of the statue, foul play is ruled out–at first. But at Harry’s urging, the body is exhumed for an autopsy. There’s just one problem: the coffin is empty. That’s when Mrs. Murphy, Pewter, and Tucker get involved. Then there’s the shocking revelation of a mystery that has perplexed the citizens of Crozet for ages.

With Christmas around the corner and the monastery overrun by the faithful, all Harry’s meddling menagerie can do is stay on her trail as she jumps knee-deep into an unofficial investigation–one that becomes more dangerous when another Crozet citizen meets an untimely demise. In this case it will be a miracle if Harry stays alive....

1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-09-15

I thought this book touched on controversial issues which I did not appreciate and had not experienced in her previous books that I read.
I also thought the plot was unnecessarily complicated since the ending was not the exciting or unexpected.

5 out of 5 stars The piece de resistance for a quiet night at home.......2007-02-24

Thanksgiving has arrived in the affluent town of Crozet, Virginia. However, while thanks should be being made all around, the residents appear to have more things to be cynical about, and begin to question their faith. Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen has been the postmistress of Crozet - along with her dear friend, Miranda - for years. However, as big builders begin invading the tiny town, they demand that Harry stop bringing her menagerie of pets - cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and a plump Corgi named Tucker - to work with her. Without thinking, Harry quickly quits her beloved position, only to find herself strapped for cash, and doing nothing more than complaining about her newfound cash-flow problems. Between her bills, and her newly flourishing relationship with her ex-husband and resident equine veterinarian, Fair Haristeen, Harry makes the decision to take a trip up to the mountain monastery located on the top of Mount Carmel. Once there, she runs into her best friend, Susan Tucker, who appears to be stressing over her own problems - from believing that her husband of countless years, Ned, is having an affair, to feeling that she's too fat and can't control her eating. Together, the two friends visit the statue of the Virgin Mary to seek solace, only to realize that the statue has begun to shed tears of blood. Both Harry and Susan know that Legend states that Mary's bloody tears predict crises, and the two begin to wonder what crises will befall them. However, when one of the monk's is found dead, kneeling in front of Virgin Mary's statue in the freezing cold, Harry is tipped off to something peculiar going on. It doesn't help matters any to add that the dead monk is none other than Susan's great-uncle Thomas. Harry knows that the brotherhood is hiding something. Something that could destroy their organization, and set them back countless years. Unfortunately, she hasn't been able to put her finger on exactly what it is. Now, enlisting the help of her lifelong friends, and fellow Crozet residents, BoomBoom, Alicia, Susan, Big Mim, Little Mim, and even the God-fearing Miranda, Harry has decided that she'll be spending her holidays investigating this upsetting crime. Mrs. Murphy, Pewter, Tee Tucker, and the rest of their four-legged friends, however, will do anything to curb Harry's curiosity, knowing that if she isn't careful, Harry's holidays will truly include a silent night. One that she'll never recover from.

Since I was eleven-years-old, I have been visiting the sleepy town of Crozet, Virginia alongside Harry and the rest of her posh friends. Yet, even with all of the new character introductions, I find it hard to grow tired of the many debacles Harry manages to get herself into. Rita Mae Brown certainly knows how to capture an audience. Her ability to juggle so many characters is amazing. And, while at times the various character names being thrown around can become confusing, readers will find that keeping track of who's who is not actually difficult, as each new face is accompanied by a quirky personality that makes them stand out in the crowd. Harry, as always, is her charming self. She knows how to stick up for herself, and won't let anyone hold her down - male or female. Her ability to uncover murderers, and solve crimes of all shapes and sizes is admirable. However, it is her ability to forgive and forget, and not live in the past that really makes her an unstoppable character. While CAT'S EYEWITNESS, as with previous installments, features a lot of background on the characters, it does not seem like filler, as each new tidbit of information into their sordid lives and affairs is interesting, and only makes the series that much more thrilling. The interactions each character shares with one another, whether human or animal, really adds to the suspense, and provides a nice backdrop to the mystery, while developing other side stories, which add a nice contrast, but never overshadow the mystery at hand. The piece de resistance for a quiet night at home.

1 out of 5 stars Should have been called Cat's Hairball..........2006-09-19

And was just as palatable. I've enjoyed this series from the begining but could barely get through this book. If I'd wanted to read Peyton Place I would have checked it out of the library...the mystery was more of an aside with the obvious solution coughed up at the end. Extremely disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2006-09-12

I held off reading this one due to the negative reviewer who claimed it was a series gone seriously downhill. Some of this serie's books are certainly better than others, and this is one of the best.

I appreciate the character development and the storyline's mystery was very intriguing. It was not a dead-give-away (pun intended) as to who committed the murder and any reviewer who gives that away ought to be ashamed of themselves and their big mouths.

I also am glad that it did not focus on sex. I don't like to know what others do (real or imagined people). It is none of my business and Rita Mae did not harp on any of it, so thank you Rita Mae.

I love this series and want MORE.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed throughly!.......2006-05-24

So nice to get to know Susan better. As love always, love Harry and the kids, Mrs. Hoggendobber, and the warmth of the stories. While plot was less intricate than sometimes, was still a wonderful read.

As a former zoo guide, I was impressed by this well-written and illustrated book on animal behavior. Although billed for ages 4-8, it is also very interesting for adults and older children, and is not at all babyish or condescending. Excellent photographs and drawings.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting!.......2007-03-22

Overall, this book was very good, but did not have my favorite cat in it, the cheetah. Also, it needs more about spotted cats.

5 out of 5 stars A detailed look at the secret lives of cats!.......2001-03-28

This is so much more than a reference book on cats. While the American Library Binding makes this book very durable, it could almost be a coffee table book on the life of cats.

Since I adore cats, this book was irresistible. Both wild and domestic cats are pictured in full color. The photographs are superb. Children will get to see a jaguar swimming in the tropical forest rivers and find out why the ancient Egyptians worshiped cats.

Did you know that Tigers actually enjoy swimming? Did you ever wonder if a cat chews its food? Why do cats need whiskers and how do they purr? So, why do cats behave in the ways they do? This book tells all the secrets including why people say a cat has nine lives.

The text is fun to read and little notes about historical details are sprinkled around the pages. The center of attention is definitely the furry felines we have grown to love. A special section of caring for your cat, makes this book the cat's meow!

4 out of 5 stars Learn about cats and how to take care of them.......2007-03-12

I own several cats, and always enjoy picking up a book on cats because I find them so fascinating. This is a good book for the novice cat owner. I liked the many color pictures throughout the book, the history of cats throughout the ages and so much more. This book is more contains more information about cats, and their place in history than it does being a pet owner.

The book has many different sections about where cats have come from, when and where they have been regarded in history, and so much more. This book will give you a good background on learning all about cats. The book does contain some information on owning cats, and how to take care of them.

My copy of the book was a paperback book that is about 8 inches high. I know other reviewers may have had a different experience. I found this book to be very entertaining in learning about cats. If you are looking for a book about how to take care of cats, you may want to chose another book. Overall I found this to be an enjoyable and an entertaining read.

    5 out of 5 stars 2000 Edition: CATalog.......2003-04-03

I'm submitting my review under this book as it is essentially -- almost exactly -- the same book in a beautiful thick little paperback. I adore this book! Of course it could be because I found "dead ringers" for both my Sabrina (pg60 -- Norweigian Forest cat) & my best friend's Gracie (pg 222-223 in my addition -- a Chartreux) We were both wrong on our cats' heritages. (Adopted.) I always thought she was mostly Maine coon because my neighbor's Norweigian was so much bigger. (Think he's just a tad overweight though.) 'Brina is a fit 15 lbs. I just love her long whiskers, big eyes & loving disposition. She is also good with my little grandchildren.

Anyway, it's like a cat show in a book! Dr. Fogle knows his stuff.

1 out of 5 stars LOTS OF CATS...BUT STILL DISAPPOINTING.......2001-08-01

There is some interesting information contained here but it is still a major disappointment. Unless one physically sees the book before ordering, one can easily take note of the 400 pages and feel they are getting something of value for their dollar. However, it should first of all be noted this book is less than four inches high! I found the book just too overwhelming small and frustrating to bother with and certainly not worth the price.

If the reader truly wants value for their dollar, I highly recommend any and all of the books by Desmond Morris, such as "Cat Breeds of the World." Readers should not be disappointed in any of his books. They contain an endless wealth of information and beautiful photographs of cats. In my opinion, all of his books are worthy of a five-star rating and certainly worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars great book - but watch out for the size!.......2000-07-10

This book was everything I would expect from DK - great pictures, good information, easy to search through, but I did not expect it to be only three inches high! Now I know to look for the dimensions with every book I order. A great book for children to look through, because the book is really to small for adults to use on a regular basis.

                    2 out of 5 stars OKAY.......2007-05-25

This really wasn't what I expected. After buying "The Everything Chinese Cookbook", I was really disappointed in "The Everything Mexican Cookbook." I guess I was looking for some real authentic south of the border food and instead it appeared that some white woman was coming up with what she thought was great mexican food. Being a white woman who loves the real deal, this is definitely not it!

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Mexican Cooking at its best.......2007-03-11

I enjoyed this cookbook with its 300 Flavorful Recipes from South of the Border. I found many of the recipes that my abuelita prepares for the family. What I like best about this book is that Margaret Kaeter gives plenty of alternatives that you can find in your local supermarket without compromising the authenticity of the dishes.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Recipe Collection.......2006-08-15

I appreciated this otherwise hard-to-find collection of recipes, but felt that the quality of the book could have been better.

The introductory information presented the basics of Mexican cooking, including descriptions of a few types of chili peppers and a list of American substitutes for Mexican cheeses. Unfortunately, the selection of chili peppers mentioned in the list was not as practical as it could have been. Several of the types mentioned did not seem to appear in a single recipe anywhere in the book. Other types, which are common enough that I was able to find them at my local supermarket, did not even make the list. I was disappointed that the more authentic Mexican cheeses were not listed in the recipes at all, having simply been replaced by American substitutions. (I would have liked to see both listed as options, since I am able to get certain Mexican cheeses at the supermarket.)

The instructions for the recipes were rather inconsistent, as well, and someone who is not already a fairly experienced cook probably would have trouble with some of them. In the three recipes on pages 172-173, I found several problems. The first recipe calls for simmering brown rice for 20 minutes. As this seems to be all the cooking this rice really gets, this is clearly not long enough. The directions seem to have been written for white rice. The following recipe calls for fresh jalapeños, but never gives instructions for preparing them. This is a casserole-type dish and the cook is not instructed to remove them, so I would guess they were intended to be seeded and cut up (as opposed to two individuals receiving whole jalapeños in their servings!). The third recipe calls for 6 cups of water to cook 1-1/2 cups of rice, and does not offer instructions for draining off excess water. This seems to be yet another error. (Six cups is sufficient to cook twice as much rice.)

I'm glad I read this book; I was able to glean some interesting recipes from it that I would not likely have found elsewhere. However, I would have been quite disappointed in it had I paid the full retail price for it. I recommend checking it out from the library before committing to it.

The Everything Mexican Cookbook ably presents 300 flavorful recipes compiled by Margaret Kaeter from Mexican culinary traditions -- as well as basic facts and know-how about south-of-the-border cooking. A friendly, easy-to-follow guide, offering detailed instructions for preparing dishes such as Cold Avocado Soup, Mexican Stuffed Peppers, White Chili, and Yucatan Tamale Pie, The Everything Mexican Cookbook really lives up to its title and would make a terrific addition to any kitchen cookbook collection!

The book arrived on time and in new condition. It has everything from training techniques to health issues. This book covers all the basics you need to know when owning a dog... and a little more w/o being too much info.

5 out of 5 stars this book is execellent a must buy.......2006-07-10

like the title says this book is great. its written by vets and other experts and has illustrations and quick reference charts. detailed pages on what seems to be a-z problems and is filled with fun and lesser known facts. as well as advice. its covers from the very beginning of getting a dog to when they get old. it also has first aid and basically everything you need to know as a dog owner.

3 out of 5 stars Good general info, but poorly written.......2006-03-19

I'd give this book 4 stars for its content, but the way it's written drops it down to 3. It's pretty comprehensive, covering nearly every important topic, but doesn't delve very deeply into any. The big problem though, is that it is very annoying to read because every few sentences are a quote from some 'expert' so half the text ends up being stateing who said it. Such as "...blah blah blah... says so and so of the blank department of behavioral sciences for blank, etc etc." Ends up reading more like a high school essay than a book. I expect the authors of a book to take the time to actually reorganize and rewrite all these random thoughts and not just string together a bunch of quotes.

This book has been a life saver and a nerve tonic to all of my puppy and dog questions. Being a first time dog owner can be an anxious experience and this book is full of knowledge, facts, and common sense solutions to all that can ail a dog.

5 out of 5 stars A bible for dog owners, present and future.......2004-01-18

As a first time puppy owner of an Old English Sheep Dog, I bought this book to help me through the mystifying world (to me) of dog care, and absolutely loved it.

The guide is by far the most comprehensive, yet easy to read, with easy to follow instructions of many books that I have seen out there, some of which I own. Each topic is covered in about 2 pages, yet they contain enough detail and handy advice for the new dog owner to feel confident about his or her new relationship. Building that confidence leads to a well-behaved, confident pet, and the tremendous pleasure of ownership of another being.

The guide is divided into several useful sections as follows:

                    1. Getting acquainted - what kind of dog should you get? Coverage on the top 50 breeds in the US (although unfortunately my lovely puppy wasn't in it). How to deal with new puppy, how to read your dog's body language.

                    2. Training - everything from house-training your puppy, through to basic and advanced training. It also has a very useful section on correcting unwanted behavior such as chasing cares, digging, anxiety and much more.

                    3. Essential care - what you need to do to keep your dog fit and healthy. What kinds of toys to buy, whether to leave your pet in or out, and traveling with your dog.

                    4. Food - Nutrition, water, eating problems, snacks and special diets.

                    5. Health watch - preventing sickness and common problems, choosing a vet, neutering, breeding/birthing and caring for older dogs.

                    6. Easing common complaints - what to do about bad breath, bloating, sunburn and ticks, and many other quirks like flatulence and drooling.

                    7. First aid - in case your dog (I hope it never happens to you) needs emergency care.

                    8. Looking good - grooming and washing your dog.

These useful and crucial topics are interspersed with dialog boxes (Paws for Thought) that address questions you've thought about but never expected to get an answer on, such as "do dogs fake being hurt?" (p.300), or "why do dogs stick their heads out of car windows?" (p.202),

The book, not surprisingly, boasts contributors ranging from veterinarians, trainers, groomers and other animal experts.

So far, everything I have needed to know, or any questions I had about my dog, has been in this book. It's the first place I look to for answers. In short, this amazing book has been like a bible for me to raise my new puppy (and how to deal with all that long shaggy hair!). I highly recommend it for any present, new or future dog owner.

2 out of 5 stars Bluebook is better for collectors.......2005-05-24

The "Bluebook" is a better choice of coin collectors. The redbook is a RETAIL price guide, intended for dealers. I also noted the population data for state quarter proofs is significantly incorrect. The book's data only accounts for proof quarters sold in 5 piece sets. There were millions more made each year included in the 10 piece sets. Compare the numbers on pages 70 and 152.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! (and Proof Sets ARE included).......2004-06-26

Sorry LeadPedal2, but you are wrong, and I hope not too many people have been driven away from this wonderfully written, helpful, and complete book by your false statements.

This book DOES contain information on Proof and Uncirculated sets sold by the U.S. Mint, on pages 68-71.

Also, to the previous reviewer - I don't know what problem you see with the color pictures, perhaps your edition was misprinted. The full-color pictures in my edition are beautiful, clear, and very helpful.

I've been collecting both the Red and Blue books since 1993 as a nice compliment to my coin collection, and this edition maintains Yeoman and Whitman's high standards. I am very happy with this book, and highly recommend it to other coin collectors, beginners through those with much experience.

2 out of 5 stars Good for what it includes, but where's the proof?.......2004-05-22

This book is good for what it includes, but there is a glaring and shocking omission! There is no info on proof sets, only on some individual coins. With the introduction of state quarter sets, annual proof sets have become a hot commodity, yet this book completely overlooks the entire category!

2 out of 5 stars Ouch! Better stick with 2003 edition for reference.......2003-08-13

This 2004 edition of a standard reference disappoints; if you can get it, I recommend the 2003 edition for now, especially if it's your first coin book purchase. While there are some ongoing improvements (more commemorative coin images), there are two major strikes against this edition: 1) A bunch of new color images have been added throughout - and they're horrible. 2) Whitman has filled some of the blank space with ads, increasing the number of ads for Whitman products five-fold, usually popping up between denominations.
The new images are failures because they are digital images that were incorrectly prepared for press. The artifacting in the images is so bad, for example, that the 1858 flying eagle cent large/small letter variety isn't clear to the novice eye. Many of the large cent date varieties look terrible, and in some pictures you can't even discern what the difference is supposed to be. The editor has provided a reference book that fails as a reference - no small feat.
As for the ads, Whitman certainly has the right, but the vivid colors just feel distasteful; I don't mind them at the back, where they're a handy reference, but our lives are stuffed with enough commercial filler - can't I avoid it while looking up my coins?
A couple of new varieties are added, expanding beyond the addition of recent Lincoln varieties in 2002. The state quarters section has been attractively improved, and images now exist for all quarters designs to date. Interestingly, the hard times tokens at the rear are eliminated, and a section on pattern pieces added instead. I always find patterns fascinating examples of 'what could have been', so I laud this addition, as it lends the starting hobbyist a little peek into an area I find more exciting than tokens. That's a subjective viewpoint though, and the only reason I gave the book a 2 instead of a 1. I'm saddened that it falls so far short of where the 2003 edition came to.

As the title of the book implies - this is a book about "finishing touches" and decorating for Christmas not a quilt book. In addition to Lynette's gifts as a quilt and fabric designer, she is also an accomplished gardener and decorator. This book reflects her insight and ability to put that all together. I use my copy as a "coffee table" book during the holidays.

                    1 out of 5 stars I love Thimbleberries, but this one's a Stinker!.......2002-02-10

I am probably one of the world's biggest Thimbleberries/Lynette Jensen fans - I have made over 10 of her quilts and have several more in the works. I have five of her books and have enjoyed them all with one big exception - this one! It's just a bad rehash of photos from the "Christmas Cottage" book. No projects, no instructions, NOTHING! To make matters worse, all of the photos are taken in extreme close-up so there is no perspective on anything. Do youself a favor: spend your hard-earned money on one of the other worthwhile Thimbleberries books.

Before graduate student Mike King began using his given name, Martin Luther, before Detroit Red changed his name to Malcolm X, and before Medgar Evers joined the NAACP, civil rights activist Harry T. Moore was murdered. On Christmas night, 1951, an explosion ripped through his house, the bomb having been planted directly under his bed. His mother, visiting for the holidays, had been very concerned for Moore's safety. In the 1950s, in the Deep South, Moore's political activism had earned him plenty of enemies. "Every advancement comes by way of sacrifice," he told his mother before going to bed that night. "What I am doing is for the benefit of my race."

In the 1930s and '40s, Moore drove the roads of Florida, organizing the local NAACP, speaking quietly against Jim Crow laws, and urging blacks to register to vote. He also wrote elegantly argued letters to the governor and other public officials, protesting injustices and atrocities against blacks. Seen as a troublemaker, Moore became entangled with Willis McCall--whom author Ben Green calls "the prototype of the racist Southern sheriff." Green intertwines the biographies of these two very different men, drawing a picture of racial tension in an era before the issues reached national attention. Green is especially good at capturing the atmosphere of the events--dense fogs, sticky heat, clouds of biting insects--but goes slightly astray when listening to drunken former Klansmen, who are perhaps merely seeking their 15 minutes of fame and not unburdening their souls before they die, as they spout confessions about Moore's murder. Like many biographers, Green clearly admires his subject, which makes him write slightly purple prose. Moore's life, however, was clearly admirable and Green has written a moving tribute to this sadly forgotten man. --C.B. Delaney

                      Book Description

Fifty years ago -- before Martin Luther King, Jr., began to preach from his pulpit in Montgomery, Alabama, the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, or Rosa Parks's famous bus ride -- a man named Harry T. Moore toiled in Jim Crow Florida on behalf of the NAACP and the Progressive Voters' League. For seventeen years, in an era of official indifference and outright hostility, the soft-spoken but resolute Moore traveled the backroads of the state on a mission to educate, evangelize, and organize. But on Christmas night in 1951, in a small orange grove in tiny Mims, Florida, a bomb placed under a bed ended Harry Moore's life. Although his daughters, Peaches and Evangeline, survived, his wife, Harriette, died of her wounds a week later. Unjustly neglected until now, Moore's death stands as the first in what was to be a long and tragic line of assassinations in the civil rights movement.

It was Moore's defense of the Groveland Four -- black youths accused, under murky circumstances, of raping a white woman in Lake County -- that drew the wrath of the Ku Klux Klan and pitted him against one of the most feared and vilified sheriffs in the country. Two of the Groveland Four were shot -- one fatally -- in the custody of Sheriff Willis McCall, who despite fifty investigations and a litany of racial scandals would remain in office for nearly thirty years. Ben Green revisits the people and circumstances surrounding Harry Moore's death, and brings alive a cast of characters worthy of Harper Lee or Flannery O'Connor. But as we journey through time with Green, we see all too vividly that police beatings, suppressed evidence, complicit juries, and angry mobs comprise an unforgettable part of our recent past, and even our present.

The governor of Florida reopened the case of Harry Moore's murder in 1991. Although the investigation revealed for the first time that the Klan was almost certainly responsible for Moore's death, no one was put behind bars. Bringing a fresh eye to the newly available FBI files, Green offers a reckoning of the good and the bad, the villainous and the virtuous. His shocking book helps us to reclaim the past, as far as we are capable of knowing it, even when complete and final justice eludes us. It also offers a poignant testimony to all the unsung heroes who, like Harry Moore, were long-forgotten early martyrs to the cause of civil rights and racial justice.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-23

Beautifully written; a story that needed to be told. It was at times painful to read because of how horrible people were treated due to the color of their skin.

5 out of 5 stars A necessary and wonderful book.......2004-04-05

I cannot overstate my admiration for Ben Green's Before His Time. As I read I felt I was traveling the roads with Harry Moore, fighting the fight with him (I should be so brave). I am fairly well read (PhD, English Lit) and have enjoyed many books, but very few have moved me as much Green's has. You need to know Harry T. Moore. Ben Green has given you the chance. Take it.

1 out of 5 stars Another Whitewash for Civil Rights Icon Harry T. Moore.......2001-01-14

The author followed the FBI, the police, the Klan and Sherriff Willis McCall as if everything they said and did was ordered from the almighty and couldn't possibly be wrong. He bought the party line and didn't make any waves. He didn't do any in-depth investigating. This was an overview of a life of a man who should be honored by all the world as an icon for justice, for all men. It was a great let down that the author didn't follow the reporting that had been done previously and refrain from writing in such a mean spirited manner. At least maybe some more people will know what this brave man did and stood for. He should be likened to Nathan Hale who said "I'm sorry I have but one life to give for my country." The book didn't say it but let all citizens unite and Remember " Respectfully yours, HARRY T. MOORE." Could anything be more eloquent or brave thatn that signature?

4 out of 5 stars The story of a Civil Rights Pioneer.......2000-07-24

Having moved to Brevard County in 1991, just when the Harry T. Moore murder case was back in the news, and the fact that I pass the Moore Justice Center every day, I was anxious to learn about Harry T. Moore and happily picked up a copy of this book.

Harry T. Moore and his wife Harriette were murdered on Christmas Day, 1951 when a bomb exploded beneath their bedroom at their home in Mims, Florida. At the time of his murder, Harry Moore was the Florida coordinator for the NAACP and a founder of the Progressive Voter's League. As the title of book implies, Harry Moore was before his time, including his murder. Remember this happen before Rosa Parks, before Medgar Evers, before Dr. Martin Luther King and before Brown vs. Board of Education. The murderer of the Moores has never been found.

Green traces the life of Harry Moore from childhood to teaching to his efforts in helping to lead the Civil Rights movement in Florida. Along the way Harry Moore instructed his students how to use the ballot, before African-Americans could vote and Harry Moore's efforts in the investigations of violence (re: lynching) and murders of African Americans in Florida.

The most famous case that Harry Moore investigated was the Groveland Incident. The case involved the conviction of three African-Americans in the rape of a 17-year-old woman and the subsequent killing of two of the suspects by the Sheriff of Lake County Florida, Willis McCall, in an escape attempt. All the while, Harry Moore was fighting with the NAACP national organization to retained his position in the organization.

Green's biography of Harry Moore is sparse, though a lot of it could be contributed to lack of documents related to Harry Moore's life. I felt the book would have been more complete with more details on Harry Moore's internal fight with the NAACP national office and why Harry Moore's place in the Civil Rights movement has been lost.

At the end of the book, Green spends too much time tracing down former Klan members who claimed they knew who murdered Harry Moore. However, all these statements were dead ends. Ben Green's book is a good starting point to learn about a true Civil Rights pioneer.

5 out of 5 stars Green captures time, place, and mood.......1999-08-13

As a Florida native, I feel Green well captured Harry Moore's Florida. Before His Time is educational, enteraining, and most importantly disturbing. We need to know in detail not only what Moore did but what ws done to Moore - and why. Green tells us. Despite the many horrors depicted in the book - and there are many - the book is ultimately life affirming: it is good to know that there were (are?) some Harry T. Moore's who have walked among us. Bravo, Ben Green.
