Well structured, likeable characters, fast paced story with bonus recipes that are "wonderful". A great read to share with a friend.

An okay entry in a struggling series.......2007-04-10

I have read all of the Hannah series, and the last three novels have begun to strain my patience. I find both Andrea and Tracey increasingly annoying, and am frustrated by the so-called love triangle between Hannah, Norman and Mike. There needs to be some resolution of the proposals and Hannah's relationship with both Norman and Mike. No person would have a "ready to marry you" relationship with two people at the same time.

This story moved slow, only picking up pace 2/3 of the way into the book after the murder occurred. This, in my opinion, occurred too late in the story and the last third, the part with Hannah investigating, seemed rushed and almost an afterthought. This is what I usually read this type of book for, the mystery.

While I will give the author another try in her next book, there may need to be some major shake ups for me to continue with this series that continues to struggle.

Ok, first of all I have to confess that I'm a fan of this series. I love the recipes, the characters and most of all the setting. Since I live in South Texas, I love to read about how people live in cold climates. In this seventh Hannah Swensen mystery, a movie crew in search of a quaint Minnesota location comes to Lake Eden to film a movie. The citizens of Lake Eden are thrilled and so is Hannah, since she is asked to cater for the crew. The filming goes smoothly until the director, who is a womanizer, seems to accidentally shoots himself with a prop gun. Turns out there were real bullets in the gun, so was his death really an accident? Hannah thinks NOT, and she's right. Someone switched the unloaded prop gun and left a real one in its place. Eventually Hannah solves the case, but we're treated to some great batches of Double Flake Cookies and Angel Kisses first. Readers may find that they like me are tired of Hannah's love life. She can't seem to choose between Norman and Mike, and it's getting old. However, that shouldn't prevent anyone from picking up this entertaining book. It's a good idea to start the series at the beginning, first because of the fabulous recipes in each book, and secondly, because the citizens of Lake Eden are worth getting to know.

Okay If You Can Suspend Contact with Reality.......2007-03-04

I love cozy mysteries, and I'm used to having to overlook a lot of inconsistencies with real life to enjoy them. At least there is a decent plot to this story, unlike the Sugar Cookie Murder. But the idea that two successful, likeable men are competing for Hannah and are patiently waiting while she tries to decide between them strains even the best imagination. If someone doesn't love me enough to say "yes" when I propose, that is the end of our romantic relationship. Hannah's incredibly precocious neice is almost too good to believe, and I guess I really don't believe her. And the director of the movie waits this late to cast the big role that Tracy gets??? Right... My favorite character is Moishe; having had many nice cats, I find him to be a character who is totally true to real life. This will probably be my last Fluke mystery. Having read the entire series, I find it hard to say good-bye, but I just can't see continuing with these unbelieveable plots.

Too sweet..........2007-03-03

Joanne Fluke's "Cherry cheesecake Murder" is really sickeningly sweet, even for for those with a taste for 'cozy' mysteries, such as I. Even the recipes interspersed throughout go heavy on the sugar and the endorsements for Ghiradelli Chocolates and Hershey Kisses. Then there are all the 'beau's' who are hugging Hannah throughout, though she plays coy and only 'tingles' at their touch. You get the message....and the mystery plot itself is only secondary to the rest of this airy, spun-sugar concoction.

A must read book!!!.......2006-05-03

In the book Bad Dog and Those Crazy Martians there is a dog and he causes a lot of trouble around his neighborhood and the dog pound come and gets him. He is sentenced to die in the pound but instead the space foundation comes and gets him for their first trip to Mars. Before he goes to Mars he has to train and get used to the environment and he gets to meet all the other animals that are going to go to Mars with him. The main characters in this book are Bad Dog, the two mice, the monkey, and the general of the space shuttle. While they were on Mars they heard this very loud noise on top of the ship and they go and check it out but when they go they see nothing. What will happen to Bad Dog, his friends, and the crew that came with them...will they survive or will they never be seen again? Read this and find out what will happen to Bad Dog and Those Crazy Martians.

I Really Like This Series.......2006-02-20

I appreciate the authors' dedication to research and development as well as the variety of this collection of recipes. I don't miss photographs, because the recipe descriptions are well-written and inspire my imagination. I have tried three recipes from this book, and all have turned out great. Savory Fig Tart and Cranberry Margaritas were huge hits at my Christmas cocktail party. (Tip: Make two rectangular fig tarts rather than one large square one. They will be easier to serve and eat.) Shrimp Baked with Tomato Sauce and Feta Cheese went over very well at a potluck supper. I mean to try several other recipes as well.

Collected Country's Recipe Output.......2005-03-19

Culling the newspapers, magazines, books and Net for recipes to cover range of standardized categories of appetizers, soups, salads, etc. is no easy task. Then to cover diversity of ethnicity, difficulty, etc. is daunting as well. Cut is always tough of what's in, what's out.

Nice job of providing range of easy and quick to exotic and time/ingredient/equipment consuming. There are recipes that will be luscious yet easy and simple to prepare or the more challenging, multi-layered creations.

I was very excited to recieve this book but so far the recipes have fallen short. It's probably a very difficult task to compile a collection like this but there is a lot here that is very average.

Descriptive and very helpful, a little dry reading but still very helpful.

Advanced Schutzhund.......2000-06-05

The book was very informative, but I wouldn't suggest that a person without a strong working knowledge of training dogs reads this book untill they become more familar with dog training and the sport of Schutzhund.

A different approach.......2000-05-28

Ivan's and Karen's book was extremely helpful and is a must have. It gives you some problem solving techniques and advices you how to approach most common problems. I especially liked the suggestions on overcoming distraction issues. The different methods described really teach you how to think like the animal, and use it's innate abilities to your advantage. In the end you get a wonderful, obedient world competitor that is happy to do everything you ask.

Precisely what was needed and concisely done........2000-02-11

Training for Schutzhund has been an art passed on by club members. Most of the successful trainers in this sport are not as effective as teachers for the adult human. This book has bridged the gap providing effective communication to the handler on how to communicate effectively with the Schuthund dog.

Disappointed - very basic.......2005-09-07

I was very disappointed in this book. The ideas were extremely basic. You often needed existing dog embellishments and items. The instructions were not detailed. ie. Get an plain picture frame, paint it, glue on dog buttons (that you had bought). Very little imagination or original ideas. The drawings to be used as templates were poor quality. Gave the book away after looking at it for less than 1/2 hour.

Better Get It Into Your Soul.......2001-03-18

Janet Coleman and Al Young were University of Michigan English graduate students when they met Charles MINGUS in the late 1950's. In this slim volume, each writes separate but intertwined memoirs about their relationship as friend, editor, and fan with the great bassist/composer/bandleader. Their memories are fond, warm, personal, and humorous; their affection and something like awe are evident throughout the book.

This was the period of such Mingus works as "Pithecanthropus Erectus" and "Ah Um." Both Coleman and Young followed Mingus to New York City, where at clubs like the Bohemia, Mingus' "Jazz Workshops" (people pay to hear us practice), musicians such as Jacki Byard, Dannie Richmond, Jimmy Knepper, Jackie McLean followed Mingus' spontaneously combusting arrangements. We get a glimpse of Mingus the musician, the writer, and general connoisseur of life. As Coleman puts it, I knew Mingus during "his Shotgun, Bicycle, Camera, Witchcraft, Cuban Cigar, and Juice Bar periods, and was familiar with his Afro, Egyptian, English banker, Abercrombie and Fitch, Sanford and Son, and ski bunny costumes. I ate his chicken and dumplings, kidneys and brandy, popcorn and garlic . . . " There are several good clues to the puzzle of Mingus' autobiography "Beneath the Underdog," a work which Coleman, among others, helped edit. I recommend reading "Mingus/Mingus" before tackling his Joycean autobiography.

We also see the political Mingus, rightly protesting the treatment of black musicians, as well as racism and militarism generally. After all, this is the genius who wrote such pieces as "Oh, Lord, Don't Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb on Me (with the great line, "don't drop it, bebop it"), "Remember Rockefeller at Attica," and the great "Fables of Faubus," which courageously lambasted the segregationist governor. Cole's memoir is perhaps the more literary of the two (Coleman is a writer), and gives us a very personal view of Mingus' profound effect. Coleman may have been the closer friend and she offers some rarely heard and often humorous anecdotes. Both Coleman and Young knew Mingus for more than 20 years, and the book is rich with material recalling Mingus and the social and creative forces of the period: For example, Mingus played Genghis Kahn in a "psychedelic Western" written by Coleman's husband and filmed at Timothy Leary's ranch. Mingus criticizes Leary's approach: "You can't improvise on nothin', man. You gotta improvise on something." The book is filled with Mingus' humor and anger and appetites; his idealism and his realism. A titan of a man and at times, a study in contrasts, Mingus the subject is as compelling as the music he composed. (No index, but you get Mingus' recipe for eggnog!) Highly recommended, I just wish there were more to read! Highly recommended for fans of Mingus, jazz and the sociopolitical climate of the era.
