Good reading,BUT.......2007-07-28
I was very disappointed with the end of this novel. It was as if something was missing'
A pro.......2007-05-19
Mosley makes it look easy. A complex flawed character that continues to hold our interest 11 books into a series. A prize for readers.
Sooooo Good.......2007-05-18
Every time I've returned to the world of Easy Rawlings, I have to kick myself for staying away for as long as I have. With each book it seems Mosely taps into a fresh raw barrel of emotions about race, the sexes, and the violence that human beings are capable of. But beyond the mystery, which here involves Easy helping to find a missing man who has some incriminating documents, the real appeal of the books to me are his personal relationships with his children and girlfriend Bonnie. Here Mosley lays bare the trappings of an endlessly complex and fascinating character, who I think is one of the best in modern mysteries today.
Excellent as always.......2007-02-27
Walter Mosley is a master. His Easy Rawlins books are not designed to be mindnumbingly deep and complex (although they are not light reading) but are designed to be interesting, informative and a learning experience.
Easy is getting older, he is 46 and the year is 1966. He needs money quickly for his child's operation and given the choice of her dying or doing a robbery, he is going the dark path.
Enter his friend Saul with a job offer that leads him to see the darkness that man can do.
Top read.
Cinnamon Kiss.......2007-01-12
Walter really surprised me in this one. I heard good things about his writting. Story was way slow, it just didn't keep me interested. The only reason I finished it is because my book club read it.

Customer Reviews:
Very intelligent, especially in today's world (and culture-sheltered America).......2006-02-08
This novel is an amazing piece of work. It's intelligent, imaginative, and relevant to today's issues.
Zettel paints the unknown world of Venus so beautifully that you thought she had actually traveled there. Upon introducing the aliens that consider Venus their only hope for surviving their dying homeworld, her imagination shows more creativity than many writers do when writing about alien races.
This novel is a very rewarding read, even if slow at times. The heart of the story revolves around the issue of cross-cultural conflicts, bringing to light the fact that sometimes there is not always just one way to do something "right". Even if this novel becomes dated with its technology descriptions, its lesson will not.
The Quiet Invasion is extremely intelligent and heart-opening. It hits home the point that just because a people of an alien culture think differently, it does not make them wrong.
The Butler Dood It.......2005-03-22
Dr. Veronica Hatch is the head of the Venus project team. It is her dream to turn Venus into a human colony. But people back on earth are losing their interest in the project. Finances are being pulled out. Veronica's dream is crumbling to dust. And then suddenly something comes up that makes interest in Venus flare up once again. An alien outpost is discovered.
Time passes and the story moves on and it is found out that the alien outpost is a fraud. Someone is interested in keeping the Venus project going either by hook or by crook. And then comes the twist. The outpost may be a fake but there are some real aliens around. Humanity is not the only race that is planning to colonize Venus.
So Veronica befriends these aliens and they live happily ever after. Oops! Sorry. No, that is not the case. What happens is that the aliens discover that the humans on earth are against their friends, the humans on Venus. The aliens, instigated by one of their number, who is motivated by power dreams, decide to destroy Earth. Earth is saved only by the supreme sacrifice of another of the aliens. Sandwiched somewhere between these events is a murder too.
What's wrong with the above scenario? Nothing much really, except for the fact that there is nothing extraordinarily right about it too. Plot is average. Characterization is week. The human characters lack dimensions and so do the aliens. In fact, the only thing alien about the aliens is probably their appearance. Other things like their psyche, their motivation, their power-hungry ways and their sacrifices seem all too human. The book can be read once if you do not have anything better to read.
And right at the end the reader discovers the real culprit that had put up the fake outpost on Venus. The butler dood it, of course. Just kidding.
Strong, with some faults.......2004-11-02
Roughly 200 years into the future, the world is dominated by the UN, which also has jursidiction over various space stations and colonies through the Solar System. Since the brutal suppression of a rebellion on Mars, the UN has been hostile to the interests of off-Earth colonists, a hosatility that is resented in many places, definitely including the scientific research station on Venus founded and led by Dr Helen Failia. As Failia desperately searches for funding the Venera station appears doomed, until a probe discovers what appears to be an alien structure on the surface.
On a distant planet, an advanced species calling itself The People occupy a world that is dying from ecological overload. They have found only one other planet which appears suitable for colonization, but are concerned by the fact that another species, originating in the same system and having already built a station on the planet, may have a prior claim. Ambassador T'sha feels that it is important to contact the new species and obtain their agreement before the People move to New Home; her rival D'sheun is certain that losing New Home will mean the death of his species and is willing to claim the new world by any means necessary.
Zettel switches back and forth between human and alian characters, leaving actual first contact for quite late in this first contact story. The contact is still eventful and misunderstandings, whether deliberate or accidental, bring the cultures close to catastrophe. The plot dawdles a bit in the early going, but builds up a good deal of steam before reaching a conclusion that is a bit abrupt and not altogether satisfactory.
The strength of this book is in the elaborate drawn alien culture, the strong characters (mostly female, which seems to be standard in Zettel's work), and the interesting parallels and contrasts between human and alien perspectives.
not interesting enough.......2002-09-25
First, I must say I gave up after about 300 pages, so I can only refer to what I read.
The main problem of this book to me was that it just was not interesting enough. There are many characters, both human and alien, but you do not get to care for any of them. All along the book I felt as if the author tried hard to get the story moving, but it just does not go anywhere. I'd think that a book that deals with the first meeting between humans & aliens cannot spend 70% of it's pages before the actual meeting happens. Besides, There is no reference (at least up to the point where I abandoned the book) to explain the physical qualities that enable the aliens to live and prosper on Venus. What are their bodies made of? Titanium?
I really wanted to like this book. The cover is so beautiful..Sorry, maybe next time.
Sarah Z's best novel yet.......2002-02-01
Helen Failia has almost singlehandedly created Venera, a scientific research base in the atmosphere of Venus, but as with so many research facilities, its survival hinges on precarious funding. Meanwhile, aliens who call themselves "The People" are looking into colonizing the planet-to them, its hot, high-pressure atmosphere provides a haven from their dying planet. But The People have environmentalism almost instinctively drilled into them, and the presence of humans gives them cause to stay away.
After a dramatic first encounter, conflicts rage on both sides: the pragmatic representatives of The People want to take what is theirs and to hell with the humans, who (without the ecological sensitivities of their race) are morally suspect already, while the more idealistic members try to do what is right while terrified that they me damning their race to extinction. Meanwhile, some humans embrace the arrival of the aliens, particularly those on Venera, for whom the arrival of the aliens has been a godsend in terms of ensuring the base's survival. Others see contact with the aliens as something to fight for, while yet others are fearful.
Decisions need to be made and they need to be the right ones, else one or both races might perish or go to war with one another. But the situation is complex and both sides persist in misunderstanding one another, often wrongly assuming a monolithic unanimity from the alien parties that simply doesn't exist, risking catastrophic consequences.
This may be Sarah Z.'s best novel yet. She has once again created an alien species that is almost more believable than her humans, and she has set up a gripping, page-turning conflict that I can't talk too much about for fear of giving things away. An excellent book.

Customer Reviews:
A "scratch" cook who loves this book!.......2006-02-10
I have always loved to cook. I also love to make things from scratch, so normally I wouldn't look for a book such as this. However, in anticipation of purchasing a home in the country, at least 15 miles from a grocery store, and with gas prices soaring, I decided to check this out of the library after doing some homework online. I picked this book up today and within an hour I had made, and my family consumed, the corn chowder recipe. I was expecting that "canned" taste what with the evaporated milk and cream corn but it was actually really good. Bread and a salad rounded out a nice meal. Before I decide to buy a cookbook, I make a list of all of the recipes I would be willing to attempt to serve my family, and if the list is at least 75% of the total recipes in the book, I find it worthwhile to own a copy. There are only about three or four recipes in the this entire book I wouldn't try and even then, I am only opposed to those because they use ingredients that can't really be replaced that someone in the family doesn't like, like the mushroom pate. Overall, the recipes are simple but elegant and would be easy to use for entertaining. This is the kind of cookbook that can appeal to almost anyone and is very helpful if trying to stick to a small food budget, many of the ingredients in this book can be purchased in bulk or at stores like Aldi. Five stars all the way, this may be one of the best cookbooks I have used lately.
More Great Quick Meals.......2005-09-08
Love this one, I'm "on the go" most of the time and this book enables me to have quick and really good meals. The Baked Crab Cakes are outstanding. Grab this one if you want good food that take less time and taste like you spent hours in the kitchen.
Excellent!.......2005-07-27
A busy woman's stand-by. Make sure your pantry is well-stocked and you'll always have the means to make a good dinner. My kids especially enjoy the Spanish Rice and the Quiche. A cookbook well worth having.
Super- a busy mother's secret. .......2005-04-21
This book is excellent. It provides easy to follow recipes using canned ingredients that turn out great. The recipes require simple easy to find ingredients. It saves time cooking and yet the meals are delicious and full of nutrients. There is not one meal I have cooked out of here that my kids have not enjoyed or my husband not liked.
I have actually put together a box of meals on the go- that is meals that can be done at the last minute and cooked by my husband or older children. They all come from this book.
Well worth the money.
Enjoy.
I can finally cook dinner every night!.......2004-08-17
I saw this book featured on a Food Network show and thought "this is for me!" It was certainly worth a try. I am busy mom of 3, and dinner just never ends up being a priority. Cooking is not my thing, and making time for shopping and food prep is tough for me. The recipes from this book are simple and most come right out of the pantry... saving me the trouble of cleaning out my fridge of all the spoiled veggies from meals I never got to make. And you'd never know that the entire meal came out of cans/boxes/jars from the pantry.
I made the easy fudge recipe and took it to a party where it was a big hit (and SUPER quick to make).
Not everyone has the same issues I do in the kitchen, and I know many other moms who make elaborate meals for the families every night. This books is not for them. But I love this cookbook, it's like it was made especially for me!

In this all-color workbook, prominent riding expert Mary Wanless presents new strategies for learning her popular Ride with Your Mind.
Customer Reviews:
wish I`d read this years sooner.......2006-06-08
I`ve mainly ridden (for a few years) as an adult and have my own horse. It is through my horse that I`ve discovered just how weak my riding truly was. Pretty good on school horses, but with my horse it`s a different story. On one hand my weaknesses are completely pointed out and unforgiven, yet my successes (when they truly are successes) are equally rewarded.
I`ve looked at lots of other methods to achieve riding and partnership success with my horse, including Parelli, yet this is hands down the best approach to riding I`ve found.
I`ve only just begun to practice the methods and exercises in this book and already I`m seeing great results. No question it`s alot of work and coordination, but when you get it right it feels truly wonderful! I already feel much more secure even though I`m far from the ideal as she puts it. I particularly like her references to how great riders seem to be `just sitting there and doing nothing`, when in fact they are doing quite alot, with very high muscle tone and she then explains in detail just how you can do it too. I`ve read other books that are filled with riding jargon but light on specifics - I love this book because of the great detail of specifically describing each aspect then telling you how to achieve it complete with both on and off horse exercises.
My only regret is not finding this book sooner - from the title I had always thought it would be more about riding psycology - it is decidedly NOT, and all about body mechanics, both for you and the horse!
Where has this been all my life?.......2004-09-16
I have loved and ridden horses all my life. I thought I knew what I was doing. After the first reading of Mary's other book, Ride with Your Mind Masterclass, I realized I have a lot more to learn.
For me, this book, Essentials, is the follow-on to Masterclass. There are several pieces to the puzzle in this book that are not in Masterclass. On the other hand, this book has a pared-down presentation (which you might expect from the title), and in many cases the text and illustrations did not make it clear to me what I was to do or how I was to feel. I was glad to have read Masterclass first. Now that I have, I need this book too, because it goes into much more detail about some aspects of riding.
Wonderful book!.......2004-08-05
This is the most useful training book (for any subject!) that I have read. Mary Wanless is truely gifted at explaining what common terms actually mean in a physical sense. Since auditing a clinic where I purchased the book, my riding has improved tremendously. I'm still a raw beginner (even though I've been riding for a few years), but am starting to feel secure and effective in the saddle. Its hard work, but I can feel my muscles developing and changing which is very rewarding. Plus my Norwegian Fjord Horses seem happier :-) I recommend this book to everyone!
Beyond Centerd Riding.......2003-03-28
Where Sally Swift, through Centered Riding opened the door to riding in balance with awareness, Mary Wanless leads us through that same door and into the light. She describes how the best riders in the world achieve flawless, brilliant performances from their horses with seemingly little use of their bodies. Many of them don't know or can't tell you how they do it! Mary wanless has come to a total understanding of HOW. But more than that, she serves it up in small, " digestable chunks" that we can easily digest and use in our search for the connection with our horse that will achieve the beauty and lightness and willingness we all desire . Her knowledge of horse and human biomechanics is key. Her ability to teach it goes beyond what "good" riding instructors impart to their students. She is truly gifted in her ability to teach what has taken her a long time to learn. This is the true "Basics" we hear about that we need for the foundation of our riding that must stay with us throughout our riding career no matter what horse sport we choose.

Book Description
In TASHA TUDOR'S HEIRLOOM CRAFTS, author Tovah Martin and photographer Richard Brown take us back to Corgi Cottage, this time going inside to watch Tasha create the handmade items that are an integral part of her legendary nineteenth-century lifestyle. Here, surrounded by her wonderful collection of American antiques and collectibles, Tasha spins flax, dyes wool, and weaves on one of her seven looms. She dips candles, makes soap, presses cider, and dries herbs. Her Nubian goats supply milk for cheese and butter; her bantam hens offer eggs for cooking and decorating. Using only original tools and almost forgotten techniques, Tasha Tudor never has idle hands. For this book, Tasha also created a series of paintings in the style that has made her one of America"s best-loved children"s book illustrators. "Tudor would probably already be a "national living treasure" if our government bestowed the equivalent of Japan"s accolade for individuals of outstanding artistic achievement" (BOOKLIST).
Customer Reviews:
A Peaceful Read.......2007-09-21
If you want a peaceful interlude at the end of a hectic day...if you want to step back into a simpler time (just for a while)....this is the book for you.
Tasha Tudor lives in the world she wants to live in, the world she has created & kept. This book lets you get to know her & all about the arts & crafts that she loves & wants to keep alive. As a crafter of some of the dying arts, I love this book. Not only does the reading hold your interest, the photography is excellent. A very good read!
The real life of Tasha Tudor.......2006-08-06
When I was very young, my first book was "The Tasha Tudor Book of Fairy Tales". I loved the sweet watercolor illustrations of the classic fairy tale stories. It was obvious that Mrs. Tudor loved dogs and foxes and Puss in Boots, and the flower illustrations that surround the text are so perfect and true-to-life! As an older child, I was surprised to find that Tasha Tudor had also illustrated my editions of "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess". When, as an adult, I received the book "Tasha Tudor's Garden" as a gift from my mother, I realized that the illustrator lives just as wonderful a life as what she portrays in her illustrations. Now, in "Tasha Tudor's Heirloom Crafts" the reader can find out more about Mrs. Tudor's unique life, a re-creation of the simple and beautiful way of life of the 1800s. There are beautiful photos of Mrs. Tudor carding and weaving and making her own cosmecuticals from the products of her own plants and animals. This is not a how-to book, but a book of inspiration for those of us who love the idea of doing for ourselves and living closer to the land.
A beautiful book.......2006-03-27
As with all of the books about Tasha Tudor this one is beautiful. The scenery and written text are enriching in their content. Once again I was inspired by her life and her creative abilities. The only flaw I could see was the fact that there was little explanation of HOW she did any of the things she mentioned. I'm not suggesting she give detailed instructions on spinning and weaving, woodworking and all the other things she is so wonderfully gifted with. But a few more details on how some of the simpler projects would have been fun.
Wonderful, and inspiring.......2002-12-06
Tasha Tudor is a kindred spirit and this book is a treasure, full of photographs and text on her life and loves, from making baskets, to processing wool from her sheep, milk from her goats, or baking with the eggs her hens provide. Candle making, drying flowers, growing and processing flax into linen, making pottery, raising a vegetable, herbs and flower gardens as well as making hand cream and sewing everything from quilts to clothing.
I guess one reason I wanted and love this book is it shows that one can in 2002 still savor the arts of the past and provide a lot of what one needs to survive day to day. And being small homesteaders in the Sierras I felt as if I were reading the diary or how to journal of one of my older neighbors. The book is one that I can really identify with.
This is a book that anyone who loves making things with their hands will love. And it is a wonderful book for reminding people of what is really important in life.
When I grow up I want to be just like Tasha!!.......2001-06-16
Wow! I have always been fascinated by the processes of making things by hand and really starting from the ground up. Tasha Tudor lives her entire life this way, starting with flax seeds and ending up three years later with a hand woven, hand sewn linen shirt.
Little did I know, at age six, reading The Doll's House, that the illustrator of this lovely children's book was also a kindred spirt. I wish I lived closer to Vermont and could go visit and learn from this amazing wise woman!

Book Description
What kind of property is art? Is it property at all? Jordanna Bailkin's The Culture of Property offers a new historical response to these questions, examining ownership disputes over art objects and artifacts during the crisis of liberalism in the United Kingdom. From the 1870s to the 1920s, Britons fought over prized objects from ancient gold ornaments dug up in an Irish field to a portrait of the Duchess of Milan at the National Gallery in London. They fought to keep these objects in Britain, to repatriate them to their points of origin, and even to destroy them altogether. Bailkin explores these disputes in order to investigate the vexed status of property within modern British politics as well as the often surprising origins of ongoing institutional practices. Bailkin's detailed account of these struggles illuminates the relationship between property and citizenship, which has constituted the heart of liberal politics as well as its greatest weakness.
Drawing on court transcripts, gallery archives, exhibition reviews, private correspondence—and a striking series of cartoons and photographs—The Culture of Property traverses the history of gender, material culture, urban life, colonialism, Irish and Scottish nationalism, and British citizenship. This fascinating book challenges recent scholarship in museum studies in light of ongoing culture wars. It should be required reading for cultural policy makers, museum professionals, and anyone interested in the history of art and Britain.

"This is a superb work.... The story of the de León family is the stuff from which movies are made."
Arnoldo De León, C. J. "Red" Davidson Professor of History, Angelo State University
La familia de León was one of the foundation stones on which Texas was built. Martín de León and his wife Patricia de la Garza left a comfortable life in Mexico for the hardships and uncertainties of the Texas frontier in 1801. Together, they established family ranches in South Texas and, in 1824, the town of Victoria and the de León colony on the Guadalupe River (along with Stephen F. Austin's colony, the only completely successful colonization effort in Texas). They and their descendents survived and prospered under four governments, as the society in which they lived evolved from autocratic to republican and the economy from which they drew their livelihood changed from one of mercantile control to one characterized by capitalistic investments.
Combining the storytelling flair of a novelist with a scholar's concern for the facts, Ana Carolina Castillo Crimm here recounts the history of three generations of the de León family. She follows Martín and Patricia from their beginnings in Mexico through the establishment of the family ranches in Texas and the founding of the de León colony and the town of Victoria. Then she details how, after Martín's death in 1834, Patricia and her children endured the Texas Revolution, exile in New Orleans and Mexico, expropriation of their lands, and, after returning to Texas, years of legal battles to regain their property. Representative of the experiences of many Tejanos whose stories have yet to be written, the history of the de León family is the story of the Tejano settlers of Texas.
Customer Reviews:
A delicious read.......2004-05-17
Every now and then you luck into a beautifully produced book which changes your frame of reference. "De Leon" is as close to telling us about who we are and what made our nation as any I've read.
You don't have to be an historian or a scholar or someone with a particular interest in Mexican American history to realize that the De Leon story, in Crimm's telling, is as engaging, exciting, and moving as any part of our American story. "De Leon" offers an understanding not just of a piece of family history but of a whole landscape, storied but unfamiliar to many of us. Highly recommended!

Book Description
Don MartÃn De León was the only Tejano empresario to settle a colony in Texas, in the days before statehood. Other empresarios, such as Moses Austin and Sterling C. Robertson, were Anglos who had been drawn to Texas by the lure of land. De León established his colony in southeast Texas, near the Gulf Coast, and founded the city of Victoria. He and his six sons governed the colony.
Though Don MartÃn died in 1833, his sons actively supported the Texas fight for independence by giving money and goods to the Texas Volunteers. But the family suffered from a general prejudice against people of Mexican descent--they lost their land and livestock and had to leave Texas. They returned in the late 1840s, but they no longer had the immense holdings of land and cattle that Don MartÃn had accumulated.
In 1972, the De León family was honored with Texas state historical markers on family graves in Evergreen Cemetery in Victoria. Finally, MartÃn De León and his family are recognized for their loyalty to Texas, their support of the Texas Revolution, and their contributions to the Republic of Texas.
MartÃn De León is the fourth title in The Stars of Texas Series, aimed at fourth graders studying for the Texas history section of the TAKS test. The other three books in the series, Henrietta King: Rancher and Philanthropist, Mirabeau B. Lamar: Second President of Texas, and Miriam "Ma" Ferguson: First Woman Governor of Texas have been chosen for the Accelerated Reader program, and Henrietta King was a Spur Award finalist.
