Book Description
A Companion to the History of the Middle East offers a fresh account of the multifaceted and multi-layered history of this region.Comprising 26 newly-commissioned essays by leading international scholars, this Companion treats the Middle East as four differentiated political units - Iran, Turkey, Israel, and the Arab world. While focused primarily on the modern and contemporary periods, it also includes a number of chapters on classical and pre-modern themes. Topics are situated within a chronological framework and include the rise of Islam, the militarization of Islam under a wide variety of dynasties, the commercial and industrial revolutions, colonial rule, and the struggle for independence.A final section highlights issues that have preoccupied historians in the second half of the twentieth century, and are most likely to gain momentum well into the twenty-first. These range from oil and urban growth to the role of women and democratic human rights.

Focusing on contemporary history but including enough background for chronological insights.......2006-03-06
College-level collections with either in-depth or general world history holdings will want to be certain the latest addition to the Blackwell Companions to World History title A Companion To The History Of The Middle East is acquired. It holds nearly thirty newly commissioned essays by leading international scholars and separates the region into four political units: Iran, Turkey, Israel and the Arab world, focusing on contemporary history but including enough background for chronological insights. From different institutions and nationalisms to the rise of political and religious beliefs in the region, A Companion To The History Of The Middle East holds the depth which makes it attractive to advanced students, yet the background which lends to an introductory reading. A highly recommended, basic pick for Mideast Studies collections.

Product Description
Every night a beautiful woman is chosen to lay with the caliph of Baghdad only to be executed at sunrise. A thousand years ago, Scherezade saved her life by her gift of storytelling in The Arabian Nights, now; this book reinvents the fascination with this classic tale. It recreates her days in the palace and the feelings and emotions of a woman dedicated to an art where to lose track of a story means losing her life. Through the accounts of the narrator, we become participants of her story, struggles and the story of the palace.

Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
An original graphic novel way back way. An excellent exploration of heroism, mythology and gender by way of the Arthurian mythos.
Earth is under the thumb of aliens, and resistance is pretty much non-existent. One man still wants to fight, and the discovery of an ancient site may help him out in a big way.
It took years to create this?.......2007-03-25
I had very high hopes for this collection. I had heard that it was a masterpiece, and an important landmark in comic book history. High quality paper, adult themes, ignored the comics code, direct-only market, so on and so forth....
Well, maybe it is a part of comic book history. That doesn't make reading it any more pleasant.
The basic premise sounds like it can't miss. Mix Arthurian legend and an alien invasion. Both low-brow and high-brow audiences should rejoice... for this could have it all!
However, it just doesn't fly. I read that Mike Barr hired an academic consultant to make sure that the script had no errors. While it's true I couldn't find any mistakes, I credit that to the fact that much of the mythos is completely ignored. Worse, the story is just badly written. There are moments of decent writing to spark a reader's interest. Unfortunately, these moments are between long stretches of silliness and boredom.
I figured even a lame story would be rescued by the awesome talent of Brian Bolland. But believe it or not, after spending years on the series, this comic superstar doesn't get the job done. I wouldn't say it is all his fault. I don't recall who the colorist for this book was, but the garish choices he or she made successfully turn the detailed linework cartoony and mediocre. This, coupled with the fact that the design of the characters is outright laughable, actually turns Bolland artwork into crud (I know it is hard to believe, but trust me on this).
In short, the story contains elements making it unsuitable for younger audiences, and is just too poorly done to entertain older ones. The artwork is the worst to come from Brian Bolland's pen that I've ever seen. I cannot really think of anyone who would enjoy owning Camelot 3000.
Great art, not-so-great story.......2006-12-17
I don't see why DC wouldn't keep the trade collection of Mike Barr and Brian Bolland's limited series CAMELOT 3000 in print, simply from a historical perspective. While the story may not be a masterpiece, it was DC's first direct-only title and was geared for mature readers. It was a contemporary of such classic tales as Watchmen and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, so just that little point of timing should ensure continued publication. And the sci-fi/fantasy combo, especially when it involves the Knights of the Round Table, should appeal to many new readers. And then there's the abundance of fine-line art from superstar Bolland: holy cow, this is some absolutely beautiful stuff. I know of no other book that contains so much of his work. It's worth keeping in print for that alone!
But then, of course, there's the story. While I liked it, it really didn't age well, especially compared to some of the other titles that I mentioned. It's very basic, even simple, and while some of the situations contained within may have been adult fare for the `80s, they certainly wouldn't raise an eyebrow today. In short, don't expect a masterpiece on the level of the other stories. The plot itself is fairly straightforward: an alien invasion of Earth in the year 3000 leads to the resurrection of King Arthur, who makes good on his promise to return and defend England in its hour of need. Arthur then frees his mentor Merlin from imprisonment, and Merlin orchestrates the return of the Knights of the Round Table via some unusual methods. Suffice to say that these certainly don't seem to be the knights that we're familiar with, but they eventually prove themselves to be none other. Unfortunately, their old problems are present as well, such as the affair between Guinevere and Lancelot, and the general distrust of Merlin. As the alien invasion is actually being orchestrated by the evil Morgan Le Fay and Modred, the ancient conflict is shown to continue on Earth, thousands of years in the future... and to worlds and times beyond. If there's one thing I can say Barr does very well, it's his portrayals of the conflict between the knights. It's apparent that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
While I do treasure this book, it's more for nostalgia and the art than for any exceptional story quality.
Read-A-Lot!.......2003-09-15
Though written quite a while ago,
This Arthur tale is worth the dough.
I read it first when I was a boy.
I read it still, it gives me joy!
Britain falls to alien spoor
and Arthur returns to even the score.
Gwen and Lance renew their lust.
It's hard to know just who to trust.
Merlin returns, Excalibur too.
This story has a lot for you.
If you love Le Morte D'Art
In your collection, make this book a part.
Groundbreaking.......2003-09-04
It broke new ground. It was one of the first books published on high quality paper and distributed only to the direct market. The first maxiseries in comics history, this book was planned with a beginning, middle and end, much like a prose novel. It also had the freedom to do whatever it wanted with its characters since, despite being published by DC, it was outside of their continuity.
It was published without the Comics Code Authority seal and was advertised as a book for mature readers. Thus this book was able to explore subject matter mainstream comics had shied away from. Two of the central characters in the book are involved in an extramarital affair, for example, and one character is a man trapped in a woman's body.
It had fantastic art. Penciller Brian Bolland today is well known for his beautiful cover art, but in 1982 when this series began, he was largely unknown outside of England. By the time the book finished in 1985 (unfortunately the wait between some chapters was incredibly long, another trend in comics' future that this book foretold), he was widely known throughout mainstream comics for his incredibly detailed and expressive linework.
It was incredibly well-researched. Writer Mike W. Barr utilized a creative consultant for this book, a member of academia who was well-versed in the Arthurian lore Barr was reworking for his own purposes. Barr similarly drew from his own research into the legends of King Arthur and used as inspiration for this story great works of literature, including the masterful poetry of Sir Thomas Mallory.
It mixed genres seamlessly. In this book, these Arthurian legends were reimagined in a completely new setting: a far-flung future Earth in the midst of an alien invasion. The sword-and-sorcery trappings of the Arthurian legend are juxtaposed with science fiction clichés and a hint of political intrigue to make a book that is better than the sum of its parts. Reincarnation meets genetic engineering at one point, leading one of Arthur's knights of the round table to come back as an eight-foot-tall monster. Meanwhile, villainess Morgan Le Fay not only employs aliens from a tenth planet as her henchman, but also the UN's top security advisor as her right-hand man.
This series was Camelot 3000. Innovative, imaginative, and beautifully crafted, it should be on your bookshelf.

Last in the Dayworld Series and Thankfully The End: 2 Stars, 324 pages, Publ 1990.......2006-05-14
Philip Jose Farmer wrote the first short story of this concept in 1972. In this last novel of his series, he's trying to prop up the series with non-stop action, but it just doesn't quite work. It's unfortunate, Farmer's Riverworld series was very popular, and additions to that series was welcomed. But as he started to write Dayworld in 1985, it seems he decided to write it as a series. It's too bad, because if he had condensed the entire series into one novel, it could have been quite a novel. But by approaching it as a series, each novel becomes more and more diluted, until you reach this novel, where you just want it to be over. There's no point in reading this novel, unless you've already read just about everything else written in science fiction.
Tons of action, few new ideas.......2000-06-10
Philip Jose Farmer's Dayworld Breakup is the conclusion of a trilogy begun by Dayworld and continued in Dayworld Rebel. In the classic Dayworld, Farmer describes a world where the population problem has been solved by allowing each person to only live one day a week; they spend the rest of the week as stone statues in "stoning booths", using no resources and taking up minimal space. In Dayworld Rebel, Farmer describes an effort to overthrow the Dayworld system. Dayworld Breakup takes up where Rebel left off, with hero Jefferson Caird on the roof of the apartment tower where he has just forced World Councilor Ananda to broadcast the truth to the residents of Dayworld. What follows is a high-speed thrill ride of chase scenes, narrow escapes, shoot-outs, hostage-taking, and wanton destruction as Caird and his trusted female companion Panthea Snick try to outwit the law and take over an underground organization. Unfortunately, the climax, where they chain themselves to the gorgonized body of Dayworld's organizer in the central plaza, is a considerable disappointment. The remaining third of the novel is rather slower, and considerably less interesting. The characters will already be familiar to readers of the Dayworld novels, but they are neither especially engaging nor particularly realistic. This isn't a problem during the slam-bang action sequences, but during the last third of the book, where the story turns psychological (again), it undercuts the reader's ability to care about the hero's condition. There's plenty of technology to interest science fiction readers, but don't expect to learn anything useful from this book. Farmer's pseudo-science is too far out to be of much practical interest. In the last analysis, Farmer's real strength is his imaginative ideas: a million-mile river populated by everyone who ever lived (Riverworld), a repressed man who falls in love with an alien insect (The Lovers), a future where people only live one day out of the week (Dayworld). But brilliant as the original concept behind Dayworld was, Dayworld Breakup has little to offer us in the way of ideas. Readers of the Dayworld series will want to read this book just to see how the story turns out (Dayworld Rebel just sort of stops in mid-stride), and science fiction fans who like plenty of action should be more than satisfied with this book. As for the rest... perhaps someday Farmer will write a series whose conclusion is equal to the promise of its beginning, but this isn't the one.

Great Healthy Recipes that (Most) folks will like.......2007-03-14
These are more kid-pleasers and for those who aren't real experimental in food tastes, but for basic "comfort food" there are some good recipes. My one complaint is that some of them take a while to make, and there's no time estimates on the recipes-- so read them carefully and think about what you have time for. Otherwise, very good.
Delicious Meals!.......2007-02-26
I have searched and searched for a cookbook like this one! In the past, I have tried substituting low fat ingredients on old recipes and it never really tasted right. Evelyn's cookbook makes delicious low fat, reduced calorie meals soooo easy to make. The big surprise is that my husband really loves everything we've made from this cookbook. As a comparison he has never been fond of Weight Watcher recipes. I'm ordering all her cookbooks. I think the food is much better than any of my other cookbooks. By the way, I am an avid reader and I read reviews on Amazon all the time but this is the first time I have ever written one!
Outstanding!.......2006-10-18
I have tried at least five recipes from this book (one twice already), and they've been wonderful. I'm never organized enough to use recipes, but I find myself going through this book before I go grocery shopping so I can plan my meals. I love that these recipes are health-conscious, but still delicious, and easy! The photos make me hungry, and are great for getting ideas. I've got many more recipes earmarked to try soon. What a find!
healthy and easy!.......2006-04-04
I recently bought this cookbook and I'm glad I did. I often find myself trying to figure out what to make for dinner each night. These recipes are pretty healthy and VERY easy to make. I appreciate a cookbook that uses everyday ingredients and the results are family friendly. I have two small children and they have enjoyed the dishes I have made using this book. Try the polenta lasagna (my family had never heard of this before) we loved it!
More healthy homestyle cooking.......2005-09-13
Evelyn Tribble does a good job again. Her first book is a masterpiece and is sadly out of print. This one takes a little different angle than the first one.

Jane Savoie returns to share all the concepts and techniques she's learned about mental training since the publication of her best-selling That Winning Feeling!
Customer Reviews:
An extremely helpful book for "bats in the attic".......2007-09-12
Although I have not owned this book for a great deal of time, already it has become a firm favourite. Re "bats in the attic" what I mean is when that little voice inside us keeps telling us, watch out, this horse may shy and you will be off, or watch this horse it is a very dodgy ride, today it's too windy/rainy/cold,or even, I cannot possibly ride my horse outside on the roadside, etc, etc. If you have any problem with being absolutely confident or are being overly nervous, then this book is definitely for you. I found that when I was younger, I didn't even think of any consequences to riding a horse - it was such a tremendous feeling - and I went everywhere possible with my horse. As you grow older, you start to think what MIGHT happen (or at least I did). This is where this book again comes in to help. It is so very positive and also helps with other areas of one's life. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone having problems with nerves, confidence, courage or determination.
Truly, Truly Awesome!.......2005-07-09
I very, very seldom give a book 5 stars, but I really and truly loved this book. Everything about it is encouraging and uplifting - it's even better than That Winning Feeling, Savoie's previous book on this topic. As someone who wrestles with focus, patience, and avoiding distractions when I ride, I was totally impressed with Jane Savoie's simple approach to improving one's arsenal of visualization and positive-thinking techniques. Simply by training your mind, you can hugely improve your performance and your enjoyment of riding. And these techniques are totally applicable to all endeavours in life. The ideas are not new, but have seldom been expressed so kindly and so clearly, particularly with respect to horses. As a bonus, the hardcover edition of this book is also very beautiful, with lovely photos, illustrations and layout. Highly recommended!!

Full of iuseful deas and techniques.......2000-10-06
I'm making flowers from silk cocoons and there remains tiny bits of trashes. I want to make silk papers from these cocoon trashes, searched the net and found this book. Wow, it's really interesting. This project widen the meaning of "paper." The method is like making felt with silk fiber.
I tried traditional way to make Japanese paper "Washi" with certain results. However Kath Russon's method is easier and more beautiful.
Also contains interesting projects such as making 3D objects and silk leaves. This method is applicable to other fibers such as cotton wool, jute and flax.
Handmade Silk Paper.......1999-11-29
This is an inspiring and informative book which gives clear step by step instructions on making silk paper. On reading the book we discover the beauties of silk paper. The layout and photography of the book itself make it a beautiful book to own. The text is lucid and, at times, humerous and the reader really gets to know the personality of the author, Kath Russon whose work and business inspired the writing of this book. The book tells you everything you need to know to make your own silk paper and the final chapter provides ideas and inspirations of how to use the paper you have created. It deals with an unuaual but fascinating medium. This book makes an ideal Christmas gift. I can imagine that silk paper making will become the popular hobby of the new millennium.

Book Description
These two volumes collect some of the most influential and important scholarly essays by the late Morton Smith (1915-1991), for many years Professor of Ancient History at Columbia University in New York City. Smith was admired and feared for his extraordinary ability to look at familiar texts in unfamiliar ways, to re-open old questions, to pose new questions, and to demolish received truths. He practiced the "hermeneutics of suspicion" to devastating effect. His answers are not always convincing but his questions cannot be ignored. The essays of Volume I center on the Hebrew Bible ("Old Testament"), Ancient Israel and Ancient Judaism, of Volume II on the Christian Bible ("New Testament"), Early Christianity and Ancient Magic. Volume II also contains an assessment of Smith's scholarly achievement and a complete list of his publications.

If you want to actually use these postcards, buy two copies - once you see this book, you'll have to keep it intact for yourself. Devil Babe is Everywoman at the top of her game - sexy, wise, empowered, embracing, hilarious. And the boys really go for her, too.
