I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book. Every page drips with action, humor and mix of creatures that are good, bad, some in between and also those walking on both sides of existence; dead and the undead. Kim Harrison has created a magnificent world of witches, vampires, demons, pixies, fairies, leprechauns and all sorts of shape shifters. This is the first book in the Rachel Morgan series and I'm in luck to have them all waiting for me on my shelf.
Most of the time I stick to straight horror, no pixy dust and warlocks for me but I just couldn't help myself and jumped into Harrison's world of mischief, mystery and magic. Rachel Morgan plays a bounty hunter working for Inland Security where magical creatures rule with iron laws. Fed up with her cruel boss she decides to leave only to end up with a death contract on her head, thus the title. With help from friends of mighty talents she decides to plan a way out to set herself free and to help he IS catch biodrug lord in order to have them cancel their call on her head. Little does she know what a tough task it proved and ends up getting chased by more than one bad guy. The story leaves the reader ready for the next book in the series so everything does not wrap up completely.
I adored reading about Rachel's magic and her charms, they were her main way of practicing spells and were used to save her skin a few times. The reader is send on a wild ride as Rachel transforms herself, battles animals and demons, fairies and avoids getting bitten by some charming vamps. This was a blast to read, if only all the books were written this way, the world would probably have riots in front of the bookstores and TV's would cease to exist.

Fun and Feisty.......2007-09-13
Dead Witch Walking is a perfect example of this type of book. Ms. Harrison has created a rich and realistic world packed with fun, believable characters. You find yourself rooting for the heroine right away as she travels from one mishap to another. Despite things not always going her way, she still emerges as a strong, self-sufficient heroine who's willing to go toe to toe with the bad guys.
The supporting cast is also strong in this book. Ivy, our heroine's living vampire partner and roommate, is perfectly mysterious. My favorite character, though, is Jenks, the third partner at the firm. Jenks is a pixie - 4 inches tall, with dragonfly wings and still all man.
Although this book is not a cliffhanger - it wraps up acceptably well - it is very obvious there is still a lot of story to be told. I look forward to discovering where Rachel Morgan will head next.

This series and the introduction of the characters and their world is very refreshing and actually downright intriguing. One actually immerse one's self in Rachel's world. Kim Harrison created something special.

This was an alright book. It has a great mix of characters, all with their own personalities different from each other. The plot was interesting enough to keep you wanting to read more. There were only a few things i found annoying, but those few things *seriously* annoyed me. Firstly, this book is written in the first person perspective - which i usually prefer, btw - with the witch Rachel Morgan as our main character. She annoyed me to no end - which, incidentally, makes it a bit hard to enjoy the book. She was self-centered throughout the entire book, and when the author tried to make her sound as if she was worried about another person, she would do it by having Rachel blame herself for everything. Also, Rachel repeatedly thinks the same things over and over (simply worded a bit differently). For example, when Rachel leaves the I.S. she thinks they won't come after her because they wanted her gone anyway. She thinks this same thing many times before finding out it isn't true. After awhile it gets annoying having her tell you the same thing over and over. Also we are constantly reminded of how much the vampire (and her roommate) Ivy "scares the crap out of her", as if we forgot she had said it 6 pages back as well. I like Ivy's character, and i didn't like how Rachel was constantly hurting her feelings by not trusting her, repeatedly. The one time Ivy does do something to give Rachel a reason to be afraid, i swear Rachel never lets us forget it for a second afterwards. I love books with pixies, vampires, werewolves and the like, so i gave this book a try. Though i definitely prefer Moon Called (Mercy Thompson Series, Book 1) over Dead Witch Walking, I don't regret reading this book.
ANYWAYS, besides the annoyance that was Rachel, I liked most all the other characters. The pixie, Jenks, is the most hilarious character in the book, and gives the book a fun feel to go along nicely with the non-stop action.
Dead Witch Walking was interesting enough, though, that I still want to read the next one, The Good, the Bad, and the Undead (Rachel Morgan, Book 2) . Rachel Morgan isn't my kind of character, but everyone else is so i suppose it makes up for it a bit. I'd suggest checking this out from the library if you can, before buying it. If you can't get it from a library, then, well, it is a cheaply priced book for all its 400 pages.
Refreshing and Enthralling........2007-08-26
After having read all five books so far in this series, I can't wait for the next one. I found it to be fresh, original and invigorating. I highly recommend these books to anyone who is a fan of the genre.

I really enjoyed this book and am working on picking up more in this series. Kim Harrison writes a supernatural alternate history book- the world has been torn asunder by genetic manipulation of tomatoes - after a huge number of the world's population are decimated by a tomatoe born disease it is the supernatural beings of legend that not only survive but thrive. Acceptance of their kind is not easy- there is segregation of them vs humans- humans living in clean tidy burbs while the supernatural beings live in darker less desirable areas.....
Rachel is a witch. A natural witch who has been trained and uses her training to track down bad supernatural beings for the government. Like Stephanie Plum she has a cast of strange sidekicks, reluctant helpers and evil bad guys who like seeing her in the most humiliating situations- and oh yeah there are some hot guys who think her provacative dress is majorly sexy....
Smart, fun and full of action- this is series that is not dark but takes the reader on an exhilarating ride. I really like the way the entire back story is laid out and the details that follow are inline with the consequences and believable.
Kudos Ms Harrison! I will buy and read more of your books!

De Camp tries to be Howard, but alas, falls flat in my opinion. The story could've had more of what makes Conan tales great; action, magic and gals.

This book has great, easy to prepare recipes. What's even better is that most recipes use ingredients that you already have or can easily find at the grocery store, no strange, obscure ingredients. I usually modify the recipes to include lowfat ingredients instead of fat free, it just suits my taste better, as well as my family's. As the previous review states, there aren't a ton of fresh ingredients, but that's what I like about the book, it uses convenient ingredients. If I had time to run to the store everyday to buy fresh (not canned or frozen) ingredients, I wouldn't need this book in the first place. I will be looking for more of Jyl's books.
Awesome cookbook for families .......2005-03-10
alot of families have a short amount of time to make healthful meals. These recipes are a great alternative to eating at fast food restaurants. I am glad I purchased this book. IN fact I have several of her books. and a note to the other review. Some people do like fat free cheese. Kraft makes wonderful mozzeralla and cheddar fat free versions. I have fond them invalable. I have lost alot of weight and these cheeses let me have cheese again. Yeah Jyl steinback
America's Healthiest Mom? I don't think so..........2005-02-24
Right away, Ms. Steinback lost credibility with me because she uses nonfat everything (e.g. non fat sour cream, egg substitutes, yogurt, cheddar cheese). Can you imagine your child enjoying a piece of fat free cheddar cheese? There is a reason "fat free" is no longer a popular weight loss strategy. Just look at the South Beach or Atkins diets, which embrace healthy fats as a proven way to control your appetite.
Even worse, Ms. Steinback uses margarine in her recipes. She obviously is not well educated in the harm caused by trans fats, or partially hydrogenated oils. Trans fats, the chief fat in margarine, "are very dangerous because they have the same heart clogging properties as saturated fat, but they also reduce the good cholesterol that can clear arteries. The FDA has declared that there is no healthy level of trans fats in a diet and has ordered food companies to disclose trans fat amounts on food labels by Jan. 2006." (This is a direct quote from a NY Times cover story dated Feb. 13, 2005). So many of her ingredients, such as super moist vanilla cake mix and non fat dairy creamer, have trans fats that I know this author is not properly educated in nutrition.
Beyond the fat issue, I found the recipes to be very simplistic, in an unappetizing way. I prefer recipes with more fresh ingredients (frozen diced onions? canned apple pie filling?). Many ingredients required in the recipes are items I have never seen in my grocery store (e.g. 6 oz. package honey roasted chicken breast strips).
I also assumed a "make it quick" cookbook would list preparation and cooking times as one sees in Gourmet magazine, but recipes were simply labeled "easy".
I am sure there will be moms who like the recipes because they have no cooking background, but for those moms looking to prepare flavorful, hot meals with fresh ingredients (e.g. no condensed soup or enchilada dry mix packets), I'd suggest buying a different book.

Dogspeak is one of many dog behavior books I have purchased in the hope of solving a few behavior problems. This book was not the solution to my dog's problem, but it did provide good information for interpreting a dog's body language. I found the photos of different ear and tail positions particularly useful.

I always knew she had lots to say but I had no idea how much. Now I can begin to try and understand her and have her understand me. I found the information fascinating and informative and have developed a whole new appreciation of the emotional complexity of our canine family members and how easily we can misunderstand them.

A Nice retrospective postcard collection.......2003-07-09
The postcards chosen for this book give a nice overview of Kalman's career. Once you have removed a postcard, you are left with a thumbnail view stub of that postcard's image. Each "stub" has quotes or interesting info about Kalman. The book and its construction follow in the vein of Kalman ( and M & Co.'s) work, using subtle quirky graphics and text.

These reproductions of very old postcards from the Landauer Collection are great fun and might have gone UNdiscovered by me were it not for several family members who have become fascinated in A.T.C.s: 2 1/2" X 3 1/2/" Artist Trading Cards. The images are perfect to "remodel" and use for concocting your own cards /OR/ collages.
PLUS, you don't have to sacrifice the actual card but can copy on lighter weight Kodak paper to cut into small images. The postcards can then be used as intended for correspondence with lucky individuals who perhaps share your taste in the unusual & colorful objects used in turn-of-the-century advertising. You may find some you can't resist for your own amusement - to decorate a window sill, for example - OR - ?
The books of 24 cards (each) make interesting gifts - and even better, you can "pair" with "The Antique Advertising Paper Dolls" (isbn: # 0486240452). From 1954 to 1968 a series of postcards from faraway and exotic places arrived in the mail for doctors, nurses, hospitals and public health officials worldwide. Not unlike greetings from a well-traveled friend, these postcards were entertaining and inscribed with a personal message. But their purpose was more than to say "wish you were here;" they were designed to sell one of the most successful pharmaceuticals of our time.This extraordinary and innovative marketing campaign was the brainchild of Abbott Pharmaceutical Company. Over 170 different postcards from about 80 different countries were sent out over the course of 14 years. Book Description
Winch has written the first full-length biography of James Forten, a hero of African American history and one of the most remarkable men in 19th-century America. Born into a free black family in 1766, Forten served in the Revolutionary War as a teenager. By 1810 he had earned the distinction of being the leading sailmaker in Philadelphia. Soon after Forten emerged as a leader in Philadelphia's black community and was active in a wide range of reform activities. Especially prominent in national and international antislavery movements, he served as vice-president of the American Anti-Slavery Society and became close friends with William Lloyd Garrison to whom he lent money to start up the Liberator. His family were all active abolitionists and a granddaughter, Charlotte Forten, published a famous diary of her experiences teaching ex-slaves in South Carolina's Sea Islands during the Civil War. This is the first serious biography of Forten, who stands beside Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr., in the pantheon of African Americans who fundamentally shaped American history.

An American Hero, No Longer Unknown.......2002-03-25
There was a Revolutionary War sailor who was captured by the British and was offered British citizenship instead of being a prisoner. He insisted he was a loyal American. He went on, as if in a Horatio Alger story, to become a successful Philadelphia businessman, but he was nonetheless encouraged, because of his heroic service in the war, to apply for the pension that he deserved from the country he had helped make. He replied that he did not want money from his country. He wanted only one thing from America, and if any American deserved it, he surely did. What James Forten wanted was to become an American citizen, and he never in his long life got his wish. The simple reason was that he was black. Forten has largely been forgotten, which is too bad, since as a war hero, businessman, and abolitionist, he played commendable roles which one doesn't have to be of any particular race to admire. He is now rescued from obscurity by a large, detailed, and well-researched biography, _A Gentleman of Color: The Life of James Forten_ (Oxford University Press) by Julie Winch. Winch has dug deep inside such ephemera as the social history of Philadelphia, the economic forces of the time, and even the trade of sailmaking by which Forten made his living, to give the first complete picture of one of the first outstanding black Americans.
After his service in the war, Forten was apprenticed by the white, slave-owning sailmaker who had employed his father. He did so well that upon retirement, the owner left him the business. He branched out into real estate and money-lending. As a successful businessman, he became a civic leader, helping to administer his church and assisting in creating schools for black youth. He administered a mixed-race workforce, with some black managers supervising white workers. He could not vote, but he had no compunction about telling his workers how they were to vote and making sure they did so. He knew that he had an easier life in Philadelphia than he would in other parts of the nation, but he endured the contempt of many white people, a contempt that cycled inversely with prosperity; when times got tough, it was easy to blame blacks for taking jobs. Such blame could easily take the form of violence against the person or the property of blacks. There was a kidnapping ring that could spirit black children to Delaware and ship them into slavery in the south. Forten served in the American Anti-Slavery Society and lent his considerable finances and managerial skill to various abolitionist causes. He lent Garrison the money by which the famous abolitionist paper _The Liberator_ was begun. He wrote for the paper. He campaigned against the use of alcohol. He had a lifetime fight against blacks and whites who were pushing to move black people back to Africa, for he wanted America to be a nation without regard to color. He was not without controversy, even among blacks, but when he died in 1842, thousands of black and white mourners turned out to the funeral of an American original. Winch's biography, hefty and academic but not ponderous, brings that original back to us in his proper place in history.
